During the nineteenth century, Britain maintained a complex network of garrisons to manage its global empire. While these bases helped the British project power and secure trade routes, they served more than just a strategic purpose. During their tours abroad, many British officers engaged in formal and informal scientific research. In this ambitious history of ornithology and empire, Red Coats and Wild Birds tracks British officers as they moved around the world, just as migratory birds traversed borders from season to season. The book examines the lives, writings, and collections of a number of ornithologist-officers, arguing that the transnational encounters between military men and birds simultaneously shaped military strategy, ideas about race and masculinity, and conceptions of the British Empire. Collecting specimens and tracking migratory bird patterns enabled these men to map the British Empire and the world and therefore to exert imagined control over it. Through its examination of the influence of bird watching on military science and soldiers' contributions to ornithology, Red Coats and Wild Birds remaps empire, nature, and scientific inquiry in the nineteenth-century world.

Suûdü’l-Mevlevî, Osmanlı’nın son dönemine, Cumhuriyet’in ise ilk yıllarına şahit olmuş hattat ve şâir bir zattır. Edebi kişiliğinin oluşmasında babasının, Mevlevî dostlarından Tahirü’l-Mevlevî’nin ve İstanbul’un ilim ve kültür ortamının katkıları olmuştur. Dönemin ünlü hattatlarından dersler alarak kendisini hat sanatında yetiştirmiştir. Osmanlı döneminde yirmi yıl encümen katipliği yapan Suûdü’l-Mevlevî, medreselerde yazı muallimliğinde de bulunmuştur. Millet Kütüphanesi ve Merkez Efendi Camii’nde görev yapmıştır. Suûdü’l-Mevlevî, “Encümen-i Şuara” adı altında bir araya gelen şâirler topluluğunu takip etmiştir. Bu topluluğun kuvvetli şâirlerinden Yenişehirli Avnî’yi örnek almıştır. Suûdü’l-Mevlevî’nin bütün şiirlerini toplayan tek eseri Zâdegân’dır. Şiirlerinin tamamına yakınında “Suûd” mahlasını kullanmıstır. Pek çok gazel ve kaside yazmıştır. Zâdegân’da 806 adet manzume vardır. Bu manzumelerden 389 adedi gazeldir. Mevlânâ ve Mesnevî sevgisi Zâdegân’da ayrı bir yer tutmaktadır.

With chapter 6 having described the way norms for mental-state ascriptions operate in a top-down manner in discourse domains, chapter 7 explores how individual narratives can in turn have a bottom-up impact on the ascriptive norms circulating within particular domains. To this end, the chapter discusses how Thalia Field’s 2010 experimental narrative Bird Lovers, Backyard employs a strategic oscillation between two nomenclatures that can be used to profile nonhuman as well as human behaviors: (1) the register of action, which characterizes behavior in terms of motivations, goals, and projects; and (2) the register of events, which characterizes behavior in terms of caused movements that have duration in time and direction in space. In braiding together these two registers, Field’s text suggests not only how discourse practices can be repatterned, but also how such repatterning enables broader paradigm shifts—in this case shifts in ways of understanding cross-species encounters and entanglements.

This chapter reviews current research on gender and social influence. Overall, men exert greater influence than women do. Women’s disadvantage derives from gender stereotypes that characterize men as more competent and agentic than women and that require women to be more selfless and communal than men. Both agentic and communal behaviors predict influence. As a result, women are subjected to a double bind. They may lack influence because of doubt about their competence, or they may lack influence because their competent behavior elicits concern that they are insufficiently communal. In contrast, men have greater behavioral flexibility than women do as influence agents. Men tend to be more resistant to women’s influence than women are, particularly when female influence agents behave in a highly competent manner. Resistance to female influence can be reduced in contexts that are stereotypically feminine and when women display a blend of agentic and communal qualities.

Chapter 2 explains that street life moves online through girls and boys and their relations to one another. This chapter shows how girls and boys use social media to manage their encounters and the value this holds for girls especially, but boys as well. The author uses several cases, including JayVon and Denelle, to illustrate the ways in which interaction moves between the physical street and the digital street. The chapter then examines the feedback effects between gender and the street code. The author finds that whereas turf lines bind boys to their home streets, girls become brokers for themselves and boys dependent upon their loyalty. This chapter argues that focus only on the physical side of neighborhood interaction has led to the false assumption that boys control the street. By considering physical and digital space together, the mobility and centrality of girls in neighborhood networks become sharply clear.

Experts from wine tasters to radiologists to bird watchers have all undergone perceptual learning—that is, long-term changes in perception that result from practice or experience. Philosophers have been discussing such cases for centuries, from the fourteenth-century Indian philosopher Vedānta Deśika to the eighteenth-century Scottish philosopher Thomas Reid to a great many contemporary philosophers. This book uses recent evidence from psychology and neuroscience to show that perceptual learning is genuinely perceptual, rather than post-perceptual. It also offers a way for philosophers to distinguish between various different types of it, from changes in how one attends to the learned ability to differentiate two properties or to perceive two properties as unified. The book illustrates how this taxonomy can classify cases in the philosophical literature, and then it rethinks several domains in the philosophy of perception in terms of perceptual learning, including multisensory perception, color perception, and speech perception. As a whole, it offers a new philosophical theory of the function of perceptual learning. Perceptual learning embeds into our quick perceptual systems what would be a slower task were it to be done in a controlled, cognitive manner. A novice wine taster drinking a Cabernet Sauvignon may have to think about its features first and then infer the type of wine it is, while an expert identifies it immediately. Perceptual learning frees up cognitive resources for other tasks, such as thinking about the vineyard or the vintage of the wine. All in all, this book explores the nature, scope, and theoretical implications of perceptual learning.

Aufnahmen aus den frühen 1960er Jahren von Ingeborg Bachmann, Tankred Dorst, Günter Grass, Uwe Johnson oder Wolfdietrich Schnurre etwa lassen bereits ihren fotografischen Eigensinn und Stil erkennen. Sie sind echt und einmalig. Immer wieder hat sie auch Filmemacher porträtiert und am Set beobachtet. Intensiv ist ihre Freundschaft und Zusammenarbeit mit Alexander Kluge, auch Volker Schlöndorff ist sie als Fotografin verbunden. Digne M. Marcovicz studierte in München Fotografie, arbeitete danach als freie Pressefotografin und war über zwei Jahrzehnte als Bildjournalistin für den "Spiegel" tätig. Daneben hat sie auch Filme gedreht. Seit 1970 mit Werner Schroeter befreundet, hat sie dessen Dreharbeiten, Theaterinszenierungen und vor allem auch ihn selbst im Bild festgehalten. Thomas Bernhard hat sie einmal eine "höchst talentierte Fotografin" genannt. Sie selbst machte die Beobachtung, dass viele Menschen nicht fotografiert werden wollen, das heißt, "sie wollen doch", sie als Fotografin müsse herausfinden, "was die Menschen wirklich wollen". Digne M. Marcovicz sucht nach einem Schlüssel für die Personen, die sie fotografieren will. Je verschlossener der Mensch, desto schwieriger die Aufgabe, doch alle, so sagt sie, ob ihr sympathisch oder nicht, haben ein Recht darauf, "gleich" fotografiert zu werden. Dieses Buch versammelt rund 100 Porträts von Filmkünstlern und Schriftstellern sowie Werkaufnahmen. Alle Personen haben eine Verbindung zum Film, manche mehr, manche weniger. Was Digne M. Marcovicz antreibt, ist eine nicht zu bremsende Neugier, sie ist immer in Bewegung und entdeckt dabei als Fotografin den Menschen hinter der öffentlichen Person. Kunst ist politisch, sagt sie. Australia’s experience in community-based environmental repair is unique in the world, with no shortage of analysis by bureaucrats, academics and environmentalists. This collection of 17 case studies gives a view from ground level. It includes heroic accounts of families who changed their way of farming and their relationship to the land so significantly they found they could stop hand-feeding stock during a drought and see the bush coming back. It describes the experience with ‘bush tenders’, which were oversubscribed, as farmers competed with each other for stewardship payments to manage their grazing lands for endangered ground-nesting birds as well as beef and wool. And it tells of a group of wheat growers who plant patches of grassland for beneficial insects that save them tens of thousands of dollars a year in pesticide bills. The case studies arose from a meeting of 250 farmers, foresters and fishers from all Australian states, who met in Launceston as guests of the community group Tamar Natural Resource Management to reflect on the question: ‘Is it possible to be good environmental managers and prosper in our businesses?’ As well as tales of environmental hope, there are also messages about the limits of duty of care, the need to share the costs of achieving society’s expectations, and the possibility of learning from unlikely places. Biodiversity: Integrating Conservation and Production includes the seven ‘Tamar Principles’, distilled by the delegates from the meeting for those on the front line.

Bajo esta premisa, el tomo trata la evolución de la doctrina gramatical, el desarrollo de la fraseología como rama de los estudios del folklore, la institucionalización de los estudios hispánicos en Alemania, el tratamiento del plurilingüisimo y de situaciones de contacto lingüístico en Cataluña, la República Dominicana y Filipinas, y se discuten los esfuerzos actuales de la lingüística por estudiar el español en los medios de comunicación. Drug-induced acute tubulointerstitial nephritis (ATIN) is the most common aetiology of ATIN and a potentially correctable cause of acute kidney injury (AKI). An interval of 7–10 days typically exists between drug exposure and development of AKI, but this interval can be considerably shorter following re-challenge or markedly longer with certain drugs. It occurs in an idiosyncratic and non-dose-dependent manner. Antibiotics, NSAIDs, and proton pump inhibitors are the most frequently involved agents, but the list of drugs that can induce ATIN is continuously increasing. The mechanism of renal injury is postulated to involve cell-mediated immunity, supported by the observation that T cells are the predominant cell type comprising the interstitial infiltrate. A humoral response underlies rare cases of ATIN, in which a portion of a drug molecule (i.e. methicillin) may act as a hapten, bind to the tubular basement membrane (TBM), and elicit anti-TBM antibodies. The classic symptoms of fever, rash, and arthralgia may be absent in up to two-thirds of patients. Diagnostic studies, such as urine eosinophils and renal gallium-67 scanning provide only suggestive evidence. Renal biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosis, but it may not be required in mild cases or when clinical improvement is rapid after removal of an offending medication. Pathologic findings include interstitial inflammation, oedema, and tubulitis. The time until removal of such agents and the severity of renal biopsy findings provide the best prognostic value for the return to baseline renal function. Poor prognostic indicators are the long duration of AKI (> 3 weeks), a patient’s advanced age, and the high degree of interstitial fibrosis. Early recognition and appropriate therapy are essential to the management of drug-induced ATIN, because patients can ultimately develop chronic kidney disease. The mainstay of therapy is timely discontinuation of the causative agent, whereas controversy persists about the role of steroids.
