The aim of this study is to describe the changes of bioavailable phosphorus content in soil in long-term 18 years field experiments with different fertilizing systems. The field experiments are located at three sites with different soil and climatic conditions in the Czech Republic (Červený Újezd, Humpolec and Prague-Suchdol). Same fertilizing systems and crop rotation (potatoes (maize) – winter wheat – spring barley) are realized at each site with following fertilizing treatments: (1) unfertilized treatment (control), (2) farmyard manure (FYM), (3) and (4) sewage sludge (SS 1 and SS 3), (5) mineral nitrogen (N), (6) mineral nitrogen with straw (N + straw) and (7) mineral nitrogen with phosphorus and potassium (NPK). The long-term fertilizing effect on available P content changes in soil was observed. Bioavailable phosphorus content in soil increased in treatments with organic fertilization after 18 year experiment at all sites. The treatments SS 3 had the highest increase at all sites. The highest bioavailable P content increase compared to control (258 mg/kg) was determined at site Červený Újezd. On the contrary, available phosphorus content decreased at treatments with mineral fertilization and control treatment among all sites. Bioavailable P content decrease in the treatment NPK was observed, although phosphorus was applied. The lowest differences in available P content among all fertilizing treatments were observed at the location Prague-Suchdol.

It has been more important for management of water quality to estimate the amount of bioavailable phosphorus (BAP) in suspended solids (SS) entering lakes and estuaries. AGP test or extraction by 0.1 mol l−1 NaOH (C-BOD) is widely used. Recently, highly bioavailable phosphorus (HBAP) was introduced to indicate a more easily soluble and bioavailable fraction using successive extraction by 0.1 mol l−1 HCl and 0.1 mol l−1 NaOH. New biologically measured BAP (B-BAP) using bacterial respiration activity was introduced in this paper. B-BAP was estimated from oxygen uptake rate (OUR), which was measured by a respiratory meter for BOD measurement using a pressure sensor. B-BAP is useful for a rapid and direct measurement of phosphorus bioavailability. B-BAP, HBAP and C-BAP in river SS were measured and compared with each other. The percentages of HBAP and B-BAP to PP were large in the urban river, while the percentage of NaOH-P or C-BAP was large in the rivers flowing in agricultural areas. By comparison with phosphorus fractions in paddy soil and activated sludge it was suggested that SS in the rivers flowing in agricultural areas mainly consisted of clay, silt or sand, while the SS in the urban river consisted of a large percentage of organic particles as well. Phosphorus in SS was suggested to be more easily bioavailable in the urban river than the rivers in agricultural areas. The ratio of C-BAP/B-BAP was large in the rivers in agricultural areas and small in the urban river. As HBAP contents were almost similar to B-BAP contents in the river SS, HBAP can be a suitable index of phosphorus indicating easily and rapidly the bioavailable fraction in SS. Abstract. Boreal lake and river ecosystems receive large quantities of organic nutrients and carbon (C) from their catchments. How bacterioplankton respond to these inputs is not well understood, in part because we base our understanding and predictions on total pools, yet we know little about the stoichiometry of bioavailable elements within organic matter. We designed bioassays with the purpose of exhausting the pools of readily bioavailable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC), bioavailable dissolved nitrogen (BDN), and bioavailable dissolved phosphorus (BDP) as fast as possible. Applying the method in four boreal lakes at base-flow conditions yielded concentrations of bioavailable resources in the range 105–693 µg C L−1 for BDOC (2 % of initial total DOC), 24–288 µg N L−1 for BDN (31 % of initial total dissolved nitrogen), and 0.2–17 µg P L−1 for BDP (49 % of initial total dissolved phosphorus). Thus, relative bioavailability increased from carbon (C) to nitrogen (N) to phosphorus (P). We show that the main fraction of bioavailable nutrients is organic, representing 80 % of BDN and 61 % of BDP. In addition, we demonstrate that total C : N and C : P ratios are as much as 13-fold higher than C : N and C : P ratios for bioavailable resource fractions. Further, by applying additional bioavailability measurements to seven widely distributed rivers, we provide support for a general pattern of relatively high bioavailability of P and N in relation to C. Altogether, our findings underscore the poor availability of C for support of bacterial metabolism in boreal C-rich freshwaters, and suggest that these ecosystems are very sensitive to increased input of bioavailable DOC.

The anion-exchange resin (AER) method for the estimation of bioavailable phosphorus was slightly optimised for soils with high contents of readily soluble organic compounds as well as for those having very different clay and sand contents. The method based on a strong base anion exchanger, the active group of trimethyl benzyl ammonium, the field moist soil, and the enclosure of resin beds in a bag was very different soils under relatively uniform outer conditions where the determination of the absorbance of (blue) phosphate-molybdate complex at 870 nm is used. The motivation of the proposed method comes from distinctive features of forest soils where marked differences are commonly encountered between clay/silt/sand contents, pH-values, and the contents of organic substances. A modestly new methodology was applied for the evaluation of seasonal phosphorus dynamics in a forest environment. The recommended rapid assay for available phosphorus was statistically compared with other procedures. Considerable seasonal effects on the bioavailable P contents were demonstrated.

Phosphorus concentrations as both total phosphorus and partitioned (dissolved, 'bioavailable' and 'available-reactive') phosphorus have been determined in a quality-controlled study of the Williams River in the Hunter Valley, Australia, at Boags Hill during a five-month period. Complementary analyses of each sample for a range of standard water quality parameters were also obtained. Strong interrelationships between total phosphorus and partitioned phosphorus suggest that total phosphorus alone may be as adequate an indicator of potential algal growth as bioavailable phosphorus in this river system, an outcome supported by limited algal bioassay results. Principal component or factor analysis of the complete data set allowed qualitative insight into the relationship between the different concentrations (relevant cations and anions) and other measurements (colour (apparent), turbidity, etc.). Compounds from similar sources are clustered in the principal component plots. The samples taken over a specific time period have been analysed in a similar way, with clustering according to rainfall patterns being clearly indicated.

The bioavailable fraction of phosphorus (BAP) in the lower Bear River system waters was investigated. BAP plays a critical role as the limiting nutrient for algal production and eutrophication in proposed reservoirs in the Bear River system. The Bear River system has a hardness rang ing between 180-240 rng/L as CaC03 which significantly affects BAP. BAP estimation was done by a modified Selenastrum capricornutum Printz Algal Assay Bottle Test. The algal bioassay is considered the best estimator of BAP because no chemical tests or i ndicator parameters are available. Autoclaving and UV radiation were found to be unacceptable means for sterilization because of phosphorus precipitation and inability to kill all the protozoa, respectively. Whole water samples were sterilized by gamma radiation . Hydrogen peroxide formed by gamma radiation was minimized by sparging with nitrogen gas , and adding peroxidase to remove low hydrogen peroxide concentrations. Soluble reactive phosphorus concentrations changed during radiation. The algal photosynthetic consumption of co2 in the assay procedure raised the pH from 8 to as high as 10, which resulted in significant quantities of phosphorus precipitating with calcium and becoming unavailable. To minimize the effects of precipitation, the following recommendations are made : (1) bubble the bioassay flask with a C02/air gas mixture to minimize pH increase ; and (2) use a high inoculum (105 cells/ml) of S . capricornutum that have been phosphorus starved for several days to maximize luxury uptake. Bioavailable phosphorus was estimated for each of the sources in Cache County. There are three major point sources (Logan, Hyrum, and Preston wastewater treatment plants) that contribute significant quantities of phosphorus . There are approximately 200 feedlots in the Cache Valley, and approximately 744,000 acres of land in Cache County which contribute runoff to the Bear River system. In Cache County, point sources contribute 2 8 , 20 0 ( 4 6%) kg BAP /yr, livestock runoff contributes 2,500 (4%) kg BAP/yr, and land runoff contributes 28,600 to 33,600 (50%) kg BAP/yr. Bioavailable phosphorus from land runoff was calculated by using export coefficients, which are usually accurate within a factor of two. A comprehensive phosphorus management plan is required to reduce available phosphorus from all sources to minimize algal blooms in the receiving waters.

: In freshwater systems phosphorus (P) is the limiting element in the cause of eutrophication. In many Swedish lakes, causes of eutrophication have been attributed to more of internal loading than external since the external loading has been fairly well managed. Internal loading is linked to the mobility of sediment P, which are known to be Bioavailable P (BAP). Sediments from Lake Hällerstadsjön in Sweden was studied to know the BAP concentration and its possible release into the water column under reduced conditions. Sediments were sampled at two different depths, 0-5 cm and 5-10cm. BAP was determined by a phosphorus fractionation scheme. Sediments were incubated under oxic and anoxic conditions in the laboratory to evaluate sediment P release. Spatial variation in the distribution of P forms across the lake was also studied, in order to examine possible local patterns, particularly along a transect from the main inlet to the outlet. Fractionation analyses showed a trend of; Residual-P > NaOH-P > HCl-P > BD-P > Loosely bound P. The fractions constituting the BAP was higher at the 0-5 cm sediment depth than 5-10 cm. Sediment P flux was recorded for anoxic but not oxic sediment. BAP correlated significantly with sediment P flux (P= 0.01). Spatially, the P distribution varied both at depths and along a latitudinal transect, from the main inlet to the outlet.  Dredging of the surface sediments with high BAP content would possibly be an effective means of preventing eutrophication of the lake.

[Truncated abstract] Eleven sites, each with the trio of land uses: Eucalyptus globulus plantation, pasture and natural vegetation, representing from the Mediterranean climate, high rainfall region (<550 mm annually) of south-western Australia were investigated to assess medium-term changes in the P-supplying capacity of soils in eucalypt plantations growing on agricultural land. The natural vegetation soils were a benchmark for comparing soil P change since land clearing and development for agriculture. The experimental framework provided an ideal basis for studying changes in P forms since land clearing and fertilization for agriculture and the ensuing conversion to plantations (on an average 9 years ago). Conventional soil P indices measure plant available P that is more relevant to short duration annual crops and pastures. To predict medium-term P availability, P forms were determined using Hedley et al.’s (1982) fractionation scheme and fractions were grouped using the Guo and Youst (1998) criteria into readily, moderately and sparingly available P. The P species were also determined by 31P NMR spectroscopy of 0.5M NaOH-0.1M EDTA extracts. Hedley et al.’s (1982) inorganic P extracted by anion exchange resin and by NaHCO3 are widely considered to be approximations to the actual plant available P. The availability to plants of other P fractions is less certain and this is examined in an experiment to compare the plant availability of various P fractions in soils from fertilized and unfertilized land uses following exhaustive cropping in the glasshouse. The soil texture for the sites studied included coarse sand, loamy sand, clayey sand, and sandy loam. Surface soils (0-10 cm) have pH(CaCl2) in the acidic range (mean 4.4) and there is no significant difference due to differences in land use (P<0.05). The soils are of low EC (1:5 H2O) - 6 mS m-1. There is an almost 5-fold variation in organic C among sites (from 1.4% to 8%) but organic C values did not show any significant effect (P<0.05) of changes in land use. To evaluate the degree of similarity of soils within each triplet set at a site principal component analysis was carried out on those soil chemical⁄mineralogical characteristics that were least likely to be affected by changes in land use practices. This analysis showed good matching of the triplet of sub-sites on the whole, especially for the duo of pasture and plantation land uses. This degree of matching of the trio of land uses was considered while interpreting the effects of land use on the forms and behaviour of soil P, and variations due to various extents of mismatch were mostly addressed using statistical techniques including regression analysis to interpret sub-site difference

All of the poultry and livestock waste. The swine manure and seawage sludge containing high nitrogen and phosphorus plants nutrients. But peasantry used compost almost consider nitrogen concentration. If land application of compost a great quantity for a long time. The land maybe induced a nutrient imbalance in crops, soil pollution, especially phosphorus too much in the land. The alum sludge containing a large number [Al2(SO4)3.18H2O], It can fixed phosphate in drinking water. This sludge application in land, it would be resources, decrease, security and economic benefit. Therefore, the research is amended alum sludge with seawage sludge and manure compost to make use of sludge fixed phosphorus property, and than plant pakchoi experiment in normal atmospheric temperature. It would to understand bioavailable P in the soils. The result, the treat had not amended alum sludge with manure composts that bioavailable P in the soils concentration is 90.32 mg/kg. The treat had amended alum sludge with manure composts that bioavailable P in the soils concentration decrease 87.15 mg/kg. The seawage sludge had not amended alum sludge that bioavailable P in the soils concentration is 99.67 mg/kg. But, amended alum sludge with seawage sludge that bioavailable P in the soils concentration decrease 75.82 mg/kg .The alum sludge can fixed phosphorus in this experiment. The experiment plant pakchoi can to verify. The alum sludge application can decrease too much phosphorus in environments and it can not effect plant pakchoi to grow.

There are lacks of fertility as limiting factor for plant growth due to non- fertilizer in several natural ecosystems in worldwide. The lack of phosphorus causes the limiting plant growth in natural environment. The limit amount of phosphorus supply was present in natural environment and limit in bioavailability P for plant growth. Thus, the mineralization of organic P is an important source for P supply. There are two pathways concerning the mineralization of P: (1) inorganic P was transformed from microbial activity, and (2) inorganic P was transformed by soil enzyme reaction. The objectives of this study were focused on the Ta-Ta-Chia forest ecosystem. Liters input in soils and reduce the activity of plant physiology in winter. Liters were decomposed by soil microbes, and to investigate the bioavailability P contents correlated with microbial biomass, activity of acid phosphates, vegetation in situ, slop and microclimate. This study selected four sites. Every site collected six samples each time. The four sites are: (site 1) grassland of upper slope, (site 2) mixed forest with slope accumulate materials in down slope, (site 3) mixed forest without slope accumulate materials in flat location, (site 4) yushania. The results indicated that the slope can cause the nutrient accumulation. The amount of microbial biomass and acid phosphatase in down slopes of mixed forest site (site 2)and yushania (site 4) were grater than the grassland of upper slope (site 1), and shown significant differences (p<0.05). It is shown the same trend of the amount of bioavailability P with respect to slope (p<0.05). On the other hand, in the same elevation of mixed forest site (site 2) and yushania site (site 4), mixed forest site (site 2) contained more soil microbial biomass and higher phosphatase activity (P<0.05), but it is shown slightly difference of microbial biomass and bioavailability P. In comparison of slope of the same vegetation, the amount of microbial biomass and phosphatase in slope area were grater than that of flat site. The temporal variation indicated that bioavailability P significantly increase in autumn and winter, and not significant differences in spring and summer due to plant uptake P in spring and summer. From this study, bioavailability P showed different correlation with microbial biomass and activity of soil acid phosphatase. The R2 are equal to 0.858 and 0.782, respectively.

AbstractWater diversion projects have an important role in coping with water shortage and improving water quality, but they also have an impact on the ecological environment of lakes that cannot be ignored. As an important biogenic element for evaluating the primary productivity and eutrophication of lake water bodies, the influence of phosphorus by water diversion activities and its impact on the production and elimination of phytoplankton is lacking attention. In this study, we analyzed the phosphorus composition and bioavailability of the water channel and the Gonghu Bay of Lake Taihu under the influence of seasonal water diversion, revealed the spatio-temporal distribution patterns of phytoplankton communities in the water receiving river and lake, and analyzed the contribution of phosphorus to the variations of phytoplankton communities and their quantitative coupling relationships. The results showed that short-term water diversion in autumn and winter did not significantly increase the concentrations of particulate phosphorus in the receiving waters, but there was a risk of increasing the concentration of dissolved reactive phosphorus and dissolved organic phosphorus. The difference in total phosphorus concentrations between the diversion and non-diversion periods in Gonghu Bay was an important environmental factor influencing the phytoplankton community, and the bioavailable phosphorus could better fit the logarithm of algal cell density in all seasons, which was significantly and positively correlated with the phytoplankton cell densities. This study implies that the control of bioavailable phosphorus in the water channel can reduce the ecological risks of the water diversion project on the cyanobacterial blooms to some extent.
