Abstract Stability problems occurring in geological units with a block-in-matrix fabric are often analyzed with deterministic approaches and/or assuming block-in-matrix rocks/soils (bimrocks or bimsoils) to be homogeneous equivalent geomaterials. However, recent studies have demonstrated that since these formations are characterized by a great (dimensional, spatial and lithological) variability, reliable results can only be obtained if a stochastic approach accounting for different block arrangements and dimensions is used. This paper extends and improves a previous study from Minuto and Morandi (2015) to evaluate the stability of a relict landslide in bimsoil located in downtown Genova (Italy), where a deterministic approach and the traditional limit equilibrium method were used. In this work, different slope models with elliptical blocks of variable eccentricity, size and positions are generated by means of a stochastic approach and are analyzed with the FEM code RS2. Moreover, since the slope can be considered to be a bimsoil, interfaces between the blocks and matrix are introduced in order to better simulate the lower strength at the block/matrix contacts. The numerical analyses of the slope reveal that shallow failure surfaces have a higher probability of occurrence as compared to the deep failure surfaces considered by Minuto and Morandi (2015). Furthermore, lower safety factors are obtained when a block-matrix interface strength smaller than that of the matrix (i.e., a bimsoil) is simulated.

AbstractThe volume fraction within a bimrock or bimsoil is an essential parameter that is useful for estimating the engineering properties of heterogeneous geomaterials. This paper presents analytical and numerical solutions to quantify the uncertainty of volume fraction measurements in bimrock/bimsoil using a scan-line method. The analytical solutions for the mean and variance of volume fraction estimates are based on a representative volume element model. The numerical solution is obtained through simulations of scan-line measurements. This work also employs physical tests using CT scan images from artificial bimrock/bimsoil to validate these solutions. The results demonstrate that the uncertainties of the volume fraction depend on the magnitude of the volume fraction of the blocks, the diameter of the blocks, and the length of the scan line. The proposed analytical and numerical solutions are compared with existing physical experimental tests and analytical solutions. An illustrative example to demonstrate the estimation of the uncertainty of volume fraction using the scan-line measurement is present. Finally, an example application of the volume fraction characterization in the geological engineering, in terms of Young’s modulus estimation and characterization, is provided.

La caracterización mecánica de depósitos de materiales heterogéneos (BIMrocks/BIMsoil – Block in Matrix) requiere del conocimiento de la cantidad de bloques inmersos en una matriz débil (Proporción Volumétrica de Bloques, PVB). La aleatoriedad en el proceso de formación de dichos depósitos impide obtener información unívoca mediante estudios geotécnicos convencionales. Es posible reconocer que a medida que aumenta el número y la profundidad de las perforaciones, se disminuye la incertidumbre en la determinación de la PVB, sin embargo, la cuantificación de la disminución de la incertidumbre no ha sido abarcada de manera comprensiva. La determinación de la PVB en materiales BIMrock/BIMsoil tiene asociada una incertidumbre que se ha estudiado con modelos físicos y analíticos. Dichos modelos no consideran la influencia de factores como el tamaño, forma y orientación de los bloques, que simultáneamente inciden en la cuantificación de la incertidumbre en la PVB.En este trabajo se desarrolló un algoritmo y se implementó computacionalmente para analizar la influencia de la longitud y el número de las perforaciones, junto con la forma y orientación de los bloques, sobre el nivel de incertidumbre en la determinación de la PVB. Los resultados sugieren que a mayor investigación del subsuelo (número y longitud de perforaciones), independiente de la forma, tamaño y orientación de los bloques, se disminuye la incertidumbre epistémica en la PVB. Sin embargo, dicha incertidumbre tiene un límite inferior que obedece a la naturaleza aleatoria propia de la formación del material BIMrock/BIMsoil

Serious deficiencies in ground characterization, analysis and design at engineering works can occur when working with bimrocks (block-in-matrix rocks) and bimsoils (block-in-matrix soils). Since the 1990s, serious technical problems at engineering works performed in bimrocks/bimsoils spurred practical research, which revealed that the behavior of these geomaterials is directly related to the volumetric block proportions (VBPs). However, the way that VBPs can be confidently and correctly estimated remains an ongoing critical issue that still frustrates designers, contractors and owners. Stereological techniques can be applied to overcome this challenge by inferring 3D block contents from in situ 1D and 2D measurements, but the estimates have often been demonstrated to be erroneous. This paper presents findings from a computer-aided reinvestigation, revalidation and extension of Medley’s work of 1997 and subsequent researchers to provide approachable yet statistically robust methods to limit the uncertainty associated with estimates of 3D VBPs generated from 1D boring/scanline measurements. To this aim, a specialized Matlab code was created and virtual drilling programs were performed through 3D computer-generated bimrock models. Supported by extensive statistical-based investigations, a design chart is provided that updates and extends Medley’s 1999 chart relating uncertainty in estimates of VBP as a function of total boring/scanline lengths.

Geological materials such as mélanges, fault rocks, coarse pyroclastic rocks, and colluvial deposits are usually considered as inhomogeneous mixtures. The materials, which are chaotic, mechanically and spatially heterogeneous rock masses are composed of relatively strong rock blocks surrounded by weaker matrix. These rock mixtures, known as bimrocks (block-in-matrix-rocks) or bimsoils (when the matrix material is soil-like), are very difficult to evaluate their mechanical parameters. This thesis selects the Luchang colluvial deposits as an example to investigate the mechanical behavior of the colluvial deposits from drilling cores. Then, a series of consolidated, undrained triaxial compression tests is conducted on the core specimens of colluvial deposits to explore the hydrological and mechanical behavior. Then take the bimsoil specimens of cores for triaxial test to study the mechanical characteristic (e.g., diagenesis, permeability, and shear strength). In this research, a rotated scanning machine is adopted for determining the volumetric block ration from the measured surface block ration of the bimsoil . Then, one can reasonably interpret the failure modes of core specimens in uni-axial or tri-axial compression from the obtained distribution of blocks in the specimens. The thesis estimates the hydraulic conductivity of the core specimens from the consolidation-drain step of triaxial tests. The results show that the conductivity of the bimsoil specimen are between10-6 and 10-7(cm/s), From the pore pressure developed at failure under tri-axial compression, we can calculate the pore pressure parameter A and decide the degree of consolidation of the specimen. The results of parameter A are 0.1-0.2 and indicate the degree of consolidation of bimsoil being low. The results of triaxial tests reflect the facts that the tri-axial compression strength of the specimens increases with the increase of the volumetric block ratio. After observing broken specimens, it is found that failure surfaces of cores are tortuously around the blocks. Since the area of failure surface increases with the increase of the volumetric block proportion, the triaxial compression strength is positively proportional to the proportion. Based on the results of triaxial test with vary confining pressure and block proportion, a new approach is proposed for determining the shear strength parameters c and ψfor different block ratio. For example, c = 38.59 kPa、ψ= 26.32 ⁰ is determined based on the approach.

abstract: This thesis examines the immediate post-World War II operational strategy of Valley National Bank of Arizona, a Phoenix-based institution in operation from 1899 until its 1992 acquisition by Ohio-based Banc One Corporation (now JPMorgan Chase). For the purposes of this study, the immediate post-war period is defined as 1944 to January 20, 1953, a span that opens with the bank's wartime planning efforts for the post-war period and ends with the 1953 retirement of bank president Walter Bimson. By the end of World War II, Valley National ranked as the largest financial institution in the eight-state Rocky Mountain region, as measured by total deposits. However, post-war regulatory issues, competitor expansion, and an inability to generate deposit volume sufficient to meet subject period loan demands challenged bank leaders seeking to maintain market share and grow company profitability and stock value. In response to these difficulties, the bank focused on a three-pronged operational strategy emphasizing advertising, market-appropriate deposit and loan product offerings, and an aggressive branching and acquisition campaign. This strategy did not result in unmitigated success as the bank did experience a decrease in average deposit account balances, lost mortgage market share, and undertook acquisition activity that later resulted in federal antitrust action. However, by the end of the subject period, the three-pronged strategy employed by the bank did result in an increase in deposit dollar market share, as measured by deposits controlled directly and indirectly by the institution, rising annual net profits, and substantial share price appreciation. The findings related to bank strategy and results presented in this thesis are based primarily upon information found in the 169-box Valley National Bank Collection housed at the Arizona Historical Society. Extensive newspaper research conducted using targeted date range and keyword searches and careful consideration of secondary source materials relating to the bank, the banking industry, and state, regional, and national politics, economics, and culture during the subject period provided additional information used in this study, and corroborated much of the material found in the Valley National Bank Collection files.

Egyptian blue was first used as a pigment on tomb paintings in Egypt from around 2300 BC, and during the subsequent 3,000 years, its use both as a pigment and in the production of small objects spread throughout the Near East and Eastern Mediterranean and to the limits of the Roman Empire. During the Roman period, Egyptian blue was distributed in the form of balls of pigment up to about 15mm across, and appears to have been the most common blue pigment to be used on wall paintings throughout the Empire. Egyptian blue was both the first synthetic pigment, and one of the first materials from antiquity to be examined by modern scientific methods. A small pot containing the pigment that was found during the excavations at Pompeii in 1814 was examined by Sir Humphrey Davy. Subsequently, x-ray diffraction analysis was used to identify the compound as the calcium-copper tetrasilicate C<sub>a</sub>C<sub>u</sub>Si<sub>4</sub>O<sub>10</sub>, and to establish that Egyptian blue and the rare natural mineral cuprorivaite are the same material. Examination of Egyptian blue samples in cross-section in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed that they consist of an intimate mixture of Egyptian blue crystals (i.e. C<sub>a</sub>C<sub>u</sub>Si<sub>4</sub>O<sub>10</sub>) and partially reacted quartz particles together with varying amounts of glass phase (Tite, Bimson, and Cowell 1984). At this stage it should be emphasized that, in the literature, the term Egyptian blue tends to be used to describe both crystals of calcium-copper tetrasilicate and the bulk polycrystalline material that is used as the pigment and is sometimes referred to as frit. In this chapter, the suffix ‘crystal’ or ‘mineral’ will be added when the former meaning applies, and the suffix ‘pigment’, ‘sample’, or ‘frit’ will be added when the latter meaning applies. For the current study, a small group of Roman Egyptian blue samples were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with attached analytical facilities. Using the chemical compositions of the samples, together with the description of the manufacture of Egyptian blue given by Vitruvius (Morgan 1960) at the beginning of the first century BC in his Ten Books on Architecture, an attempt is made to identify the raw materials used in the production of Roman Egyptian blue.
