Повний текст джерелаThis work aims to help understand the importance of bibliophilia within literary creation between 1830 and 1920. From the publicising of the bibliophile to the publishing of poetry, to study bibliophilic literary practices is to shed light on both the writing process and the resulting production of books whose materiality is meaningful. A first part studies the beginnings of a bibliophilic literary practice and its figures, such as Charles Nodier or Bibliophile Jacob, to highlight the evolution of bibliophilia from a mere collection among others to an original writing process. Torn between social experience and lyricism of the object, bibliophilia progressively defines itself in response to its own caricature. A second part considers bibliophilia as a literary and mythical source: bringing real and imaginary libraries together, bibliophilia deeply changes the relationship to the materiality of books amongst writers such as Marcel Schwob, Remy de Gourmont or Alfred Jarry. A third part takes a closer look at the book as an object and at the conditions of its production and reception. From Mallarmé and Charles Cros' experiences to those of Apollinaire and Blaise Cendars, it appears that a new type of literature needs a new type of book, the combined result of (typo)graphic experimentation and bibliophilic tradition

Повний текст джерелаMaurice Denis (1870-1943), key artistic figure of the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, was a multi-talented artist who worked as a painter, decorator, theoretician and illustrator. He was very prolific and he left behind a considerable number of works, including nearly three hundred prints in his own hand, and almost a thousand engravings made by others based on his drawings. Many of these were intended to decorate literary, religious or historical texts. Dozens of illustrated books were published throughout his entire career. They are representative of the evolution of his pictorial production, from his early symbolist works to his final religious creations. As well as examining the mechanics of the illustrated book production process, set in the context of the artist's life and work, this thesis explores in depth Denis's relationships with the publishers and collaborators who helped to shape his status as an illustrator. This was the result of significant connections he made, with Jacques Beltrand (1874-1977), a wood engraver who was nearly the exclusive interpreter of Denis, but above all with Gabriel Thomas (1854-1932), a bibliophile and patron of the arts, whose combined action enabled the creation of some of his most notable editions. This study, based on a great amount of documents mostly held in private collections (including hundreds of letters and preparatory sketches), provides a new perspective on Denis's illustrative practice and examines the human and material conditions under which his books were conceived

Повний текст джерелаWho remembers Frédéric Lachèvre (1855-1943)? Usually forgotten by encyclopaedias and dictionaries, his name rings no bell anymore although the man devoted himself to what could be called “minor history” and spent many hours bringing out the minors of XVIIth century from dusty archives! Only few specialists may remember the remarquable Bibliographies collectives de poesies du XVIIe siècle which earned Frédéric Lachèvre the nickname of “bibbliographe-bénédictin”. Nothing in this man could predict such a fate: promised to a brilliant career in Finance, it was only when he was forty-five when the autodidact published his first studies on Jacques Vallée Des Barreaux, Théophile de Viau, Saint-Pavin, Claude de Chouvigny. . . Under his pen, it is the world of a little known century which emerges. His commentaries with personal remarks could make one smile: his vision belongs to a particular milieu from a particular time. Recalling the scientific work of Frédéric Lachèvre evokes various notions as bibliophily, bibliography, censorship. . . Along with them reppear erudite persons like Charles Nodier, Jean-Jacques Brunet, Pierre Louÿs, Fernand Vandérem, Georges Mongrédien. . . With a light and pleasant style, sometimes sarcastic and caustic, the work of Frédéric Lachèvre is an invitation to bury oneself in the earthy world of minor poets

Повний текст джерелаThe bibliophilic circles, which were founded during the nineteenth century, can be divided into two main categories : some of them were above all learned societies, which devoted themselves to publish scholarly works and mainly historical documents or to reprint rare books ; others devoted themselves to publish luxuriously works of classical or contemporary literature. The members of each category wanted to create books without depending on professional publishers. Founded in Lyon in 1885, the Société des Bibliophiles lyonnais belonged to the first category. From its formation to 1914, thirty seven gentlemen, who were scholars and book collectors, came together in this club. They published twenty nine works, which represented very well the productions of the historical learned societies and they were interested particularly in the book as an object, so in its history and in the retrospective bibliography. Their publications, which were luxurious and conventional books, had besides to contribute to the aesthetic revival of Lyon's printing and to leave a mark in the bibliophilic history. But the most important aspect of the activities of the bibliophilic learned societies during the nineteenth century was effectively the part which they played in the development of the researches in the field of the history of the book

Повний текст джерелаAs a former corporation, the profession of antiquarian booksellers has enjoyed a profound, historic heritage whose rhetoric has, for many years, given its members a strong lineage of professional and territorial traditions. For along time, the visible homogeneity of the community has believed in a certain amount of opposition to progress regarding the evolution of practices, methods and relations to the book object. Nevertheleess, this professional group seems to have a certain segmentation in its ranks based on approaches to the job which we consider "traditional" and "rational". While describing how these two bibliophilic trends formed in Paris, we try to understand how they reached a division of the market for the old book. By means of historical, morphological, and mythematical analyses, we try to clarify the processes which have allowed the emergence of professional identity and culture. Today, the stakes are much higher as the Internet revolution alters the conditions of the rules. By its calling into question the many relevant services through to the individual competence of the "expert", this new medium seems to upset the increasingly fragile balance of the world of the antiquarian booksellers

Повний текст джерелаAround 1830, the publishing sector experiences numerous shifts : with the printing system submitting itself to new mass producing principles, the status of the book itself is at stake. From this moment on, we witness the beginnings of a new form of bibliophilism, which builds itself by turning its back on the contemporary publishing standards. Some writers, amongst whom Charles Nodier, Paul Lacroix, the Goncourt brothers, Gérad de Nerval, or Octave Uzanne, are dedicated to collecting rare or valuable books, and find in this passion an inspiration for their own work. This study aims at showing the strength of the links between bibliophilism and writing during all of the XIXtch century. At the intersection of several disciplines such as book history, stylistic analysis, or history of literature, bibliophilism appears as a strongly poetical object and as a complex compilation of themes and topics about books. At the same time, bibliophilism ca be defined as a singular socio-cultural habit, that allows us to perceive all the tensions arisen by the development of modern and industrial ways of producing and selling books

Повний текст джерелаDuring the second half of the 19th century, the Goncourt brothers have been lovers and collectors of 18th century French art and Japanese art. Their literary works must therefore be reinterpreted in the light of their art collections. To put them back into context, we first proceed to a historical study. 19th century collecting deals with conflicting values, remmants of the past being either considered as a fertile heritage or as a deal weight, which reveals the anxiety of a period confronted with the hardship of creating something new. The Goncourt brothers overcame this anxiety by uniting their collections into an single work of art in the overwhelming space of their home and private museum. .

Повний текст джерелаJean-Baptiste de Lagoy (1764-1829), came from the rich Provence aristocracy. In his family manor at Arles, he devoted himself to the literary pastime of bibliophilia and built up his knowledge. He was forced out of Provence by the Revolution. He took refuge in Paris and organised his cabinet rue Caumartin. He acquired around 2,500 drawings in the space of twenty years. In a private sociable space, he demonstrated his expertise, and implements criteria, based on reflections on art which enabled attributions to be made, by way of comparison, and deciding who could be admitted into this circle. He bought medallions, "fine books", and drawings. Within this inner circle, Lagoy met people who sold him sheets of drawings from all the different schools and visitors who came to buy drawings from him. Clarac, one of Lagoy's close friends and an art critic, set out to establish the social figure of the connoisseur through two visited collections in Paris. His works had to be organised as opposed to the crowding together and confusion of the mere amateur collector. Expressing his taste, in terms of beauty and ugliness, the aesthetic, spontaneous, and subjective experience of pleasure or displeasure, was the way in which Clarac could express his visual experience when visiting the collections. Lagoy, in a handwritten inventory, classified his collection in terms of history and evolution, his taste informing his choices, and he highlighted the notion of "progress of the arts", a concept that was popular with theorists of the period, demonstrating how he was in tune with historical research

Book collectors, in their social condition, marriages, parents and locations, especially in the head town, are presented. Estates and royalties are evaluated too. Collections themselves are also presented, so in their global part than in their secular variations. Foreign editorial production, knowledge of European and nexs, which collectors used to study production are the aim of an analysis, so too the public auctions: books are very expensive. So we may say that collecting books is an advantage that only few could have

Повний текст джерелаThe royal manuscripts of the aragonese kingdom in Naples have not been studied from an artistic point of view so far. The bibliotheque nationale gathers some 556 volumes the neapolitan royal library, as well as almost 200 incunabola in the reserve des imprimes. From this corpus of 750 works of neapolitan origin we have selected 71 - the mist significant historically and artistically speaking - in order to draw up a catalogue. After a first classification on the basis of their geographic origin, these manuscripts have been analyzed individually according to specific criteria. As a result of this survey, a global approach to neapolitan illuminated manuscripts is here proposed, which stresses particularly - and in a new way - the relationship between the french, flemish, spanish and italian xvth century painting and illuminating of manuscripts. Not only the analysis of signed of documented works has lead to a better understanding of each artist's style, but also to the restitution of manuscripts considered of unknown author or wrongly attributed until now

Повний текст джерелаThe work which we are going to present is a singular object, a work of art, a literary work, a work of art, painter's book(pound) or album, it presents to the reader of multiple facets. Offering to the public a new and fascinating collaboration between the poet Francis Ponge and the painter Jean Dubuffet, the work appears as an album of lithographies: a series of thirty four tests, consisted by Jean Dubuffet from September till November, 1944, are preceded and "introduced" by Francis Ponge's text. The album, entitled Matière et mémoire, ou les lithographes à l'école, is published in November, 1945 - exactly one year after the meeting of the painter and the poet - to the workshop Fernand Mourlot, it will be pulled only in about sixty copies before is destroyed the lithographic stone. This kind of work is characterized by a certain "balance of power" between the text and the image, report inverts to the one who takes place in the traditional illustrated book, because it is here the image which preexists, the text being elaborated to leave, before cause of lithographies. According to step by step the road of the genesis of the work, we shall see how engendered this project, its realization and the not insignificant part taken by Jean Paulhan - then in relation and correspondence followed with Jean Dubuffet and Francis Ponge - in the elaboration of the common work, a book of meeting more than dialogue. Our reference copy wears the number 22, kept by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France; it contains the file of Francis Ponge's notes, the invitation in the exhibition of lithographies in the Gallery André and possesses an original binding, realized in 1985 by Max Leroux

Повний текст джерелаBrittany is the region of France which attracted the greatest number of artists between the mid-19th and 20th centuries. The presence of painters is known, but the same cannot be said for the field of etching. The aim of this thesis is to contribute towards filling that gap.The study is based around the creation of a corpus. Its analysis reveals the importance of the theme adopted during each of the main periods of the development of western woodcut printing between 1850 and 1950. The definitions of these themes form the internal dynamic of the thesis.First of all the appearance of Brittany in professional interpretive etching is related. Then its place in the birth of original wood block printing is detailed. The following chapters are devoted to the opposing groups of artists, those who used colour and those who held to the aesthetic of black and white prints. The study of the colourists begins by highlighting the impact of Japanese wood-block techniques. It is followed by the resurgence of camaïeu and then the return to the western tradition of colouring after printing.Analysis of the more technically homogenous black print production focuses attention on the two themes around which almost all representations of Brittany revolve: the sea and the countryside. It underlines the regional contribution to the vogue for books illustrated with woodcut prints during the period between the wars. Finally, the presentation of militantly Breton works marks a specific episode of this panoramic overview of artistic output which, despite its regional origins, symbolises no less a part of the history of the art and technique of wood-block carving
