Анотація:

The study in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics of the earliest history of native Latin Americans falls into two distinct periods. The first, associated with an interest in the ancient Mexican and Peruvian civilizations, can be divided into two stages: the 1920s to the early 1940s, when Soviet scholars first acquainted themselves with antiquities from the region and used them for historical parallels; and the late 1940s and early 1950s, when Soviet historians turned to an analysis of Latin American materials. The second period went through three stages: the first, from the early 1950s to the early 1960s, mainly was dominated by Yury Knorozov, who was engaged in deciphering the language of the Maya, and Rostislav Kinzhalov, who studied their art and culture. During the second stage, the early 1960s to the mid-1970s, more scholars and research institutions undertook studies of the early cultures of Latin America. The thematic range became wider as well, covering—besides Mesoamerica and the central Andean region—the Intermediate region and the Caribbean. The third stage, which started in the late 1970s and continues to the present day, witnesses ethnographers and archaeologists pooling their efforts in studying the region. There were several conferences in which specialists engaged in various fields of Latin American studies participated. Their contacts with foreign colleagues became wider; Soviet archaeologists and ethnologists took part in fieldwork in Latin America. The primary aims today are to introduce Soviet readers to archaeological materials from a number of cultural-historical regions (such as the southern fringes of Mesoamerica, Amazonia, the southern Andes, etc.), to detail Soviet studies of cultural complexes and historical processes in ancient America, and to compare them to the processes that took place in the Old World, with the aim of establishing shared historical “laws” and patterns.

Madonna's book Sex (1992) is the world's largest-grossing illustrated book, selling 1.4 million copies worldwide and earning US$70 million in sales at retail. This essay is the first to use methods from the discipline of bibliography to analyze the book's production, distribution, and reception. This article extends scholarship on Madonna, including about her iconicity and visuality, from her songs and videos to her print culture. I demonstrate how Sex – both as a printed book and as an expression of national culture – is part of a dynamic American book history that constructs notions of America, including freedom of speech, thought, and religion.

Анотація:

The article is devoted to the analysis of the annotated bibliography published in the USA in 1949 by the American librarian Ellie Beth Martin. The bibliography includes 60 books about Russia and presents a wide range of books of various genres — from folk tales to non-fiction — created by authors who adhered to various political views and had various life experience and different study approach to the topic — both the current situation in the Soviet Union and the history and culture of Russia. The bibliography includes books by American authors and translations of Russian and Soviet children’s literature. Martin provides a commentary for each book, evaluating its informativeness, reliability, ideological non-engagement, and also the ability to arouse interest and bring enjoyment to child readers. The purpose of Martin’s publication was to provide teachers and librarians with a list of books for schoolchildren, the reading of which could give American children basic information about Russia, impartial and diverse, to help them to form their own understanding of the relationship between their homeland and the USSR.

The history of the first in the country dissertation defense board, established at the N. K. Krupskaya Communist Institute of Political Education (today – St.Petersburg State Institute of Culture) is examined. The Board was established to review the theses in librarianship and bibliography. The analysis is based on the bibliography of dissertations defended during 80 years: the bibliography comprises 592 works. The main historical stages of the board are characterized; data on the number of doctor and candidate defenses during various periods is given. Several doctorate theses that made serious impact in the library and information sector are characterized; the geography of degree applicants (USSR republics, Asian, African, Latin American states) is analyzed; the subject scope of their investigations is discussed. The main research vectors and the most efficient supervisors are named. The author reveals the links between the defended dissertations and the Institute’s area of studies and scholar schools in the library and information sciences. The reasons for decreasing number of theses and changing subject scope are discussed.

Although the history of Latin American women has emerged only recently as a dynamic field of research, it is already shedding light on a range of social and cultural issues. Thirteen years ago, Ann Pescatello edited the first anthology of Latin American articles on gender issues, Female and Male in Latin America. One of her greatest contributions was a hefty interdisciplinary bibliography listing not only secondary sources but primary documents as well. In 1975 and 1976, Meri Knaster's excellent bibliographies appeared. “Women in Latin America: The State of Research, 1975” surveyed the research centers in Latin America with active publishing programs and assessed the state of the art. Women in Spanish America: An Annotated Bibliography from Pre-Conquest to Contemporary Times (1977) is an interdisciplinary bibliography that has become a standard reference on women in Spanish-speaking America. Asunción Lavrin's historiographic essay in Latin American Women: Historical Perspectives charted the course taken by subsequent historical researchers and indicated new directions and resources (Lavrin 1978a). Marysa Navarro's “Research on Latin American Women” discussed the effects of economic development on gender roles in less-developed countries, pointing out that Marxist and radical feminist perspectives do not adequately analyze female society. June Hahner's article, “Researching the History of Latin American Women: Past and Future Directions,” briefly reviewed scholarly trends (Hahner 1983). Her most recent report in this journal identified research centers and important interdisciplinary studies on women in Brazil (Hahner 1985).

Анотація:

The discipline of Translation Studies has been criticized for being limited to only Euro-American perspectives and cultures, and thus scholars have called for expanding the scope of study beyond the Western conceptualizations of translation. This paper attempts to fill that void in the knowledge of the translation archaeology of Arabic novels translated into English. It creates an up-to-date bibliography of Arabic novels translated into English published worldwide across three decades (1988–2018) by consulting the US Library of Congress global union library catalogue and Goodreads. The collected materials are presented across two major historical periods: the post-Nobel Prize phase (1988–August 2001) and the post-9/11 phase (September 2001–2018). The bibliography includes 277 translated Arabic novels. It identifies the main actors involved in the process of translation, namely the authors, translators, and publishers. In addition to the quantitative analysis of this bibliographical data, this study adopts a comprehensive model by Allen (1995) to apply qualitative analysis to identify the topics being selected for translation into English. The study reveals that an increase in the number of translated works does not necessarily correlate with a greater understanding of the source text culture. In fact, increased translation flows can signal a reinforcement of known cultural stereotypes in the target culture.

The objective of this work is to discuss the absence of Jesús Martín-Barbero in studies on communication sciences in Portugal. Considering that academic flows between Brazil and Portugal are intense, we would have as hypothesis the sharing of bibliography and methodologies from the introduction of Brazilian and Latin American authors in Portugal and of Portuguese authors in Brazil. However, this sharing is sporadic on both sides of the Atlantic, and it does not include Martín-Barbero systematically. Therefore, we aim to trace his presence, especially in reception and culture studies, and the determine the reasons that lead to such little presence in the context of Portuguese research.

O debate sobre o pluralismo jurídico no contexto político e social latino-americano não é recente, de modo que suas percepções foram renovadas a partir do movimento neoconstitucionalista operado no continente, responsável por desencadear alternativas epistêmicas para se pensar a efetividade dos direitos humanos e dos direitos de cidadania, tudo a partir da lógica de emancipação social e descolonialidade, como possibilidade de rompimento com o constitucionalismo tradicional, de cunho conservador, hegemônico e colonialista. Em termos gerais, como uma das respostas à concepção juspositivista, o pluralismo jurídico surge como modelo de pensamento para a práxis dos direitos humanos, em face de uma sociedade na qual impera a lógica das exclusões concretas em contrariedade às inclusões abstratas. In general terms, as one of the answers to the juspositivist conception, legal pluralism emerges as a model of thoughtfor the practice of human rights, in the face of a society in which the logic of concrete exclusions prevails in opposition to abstract inclusions. Thus, based on the bibliographic approach, this work proposes to offer reflections on the current state of human rights culture in Latin America, focusing on the epistemological contributions arising from the critical theory of human rights and legal Wolkmer’s pluralism.Keywords: Legal Pluralism. ResumoEste artigo tem por objetivo analisar a correlação entre o processo de desenvolvimento dos valores que configuraram a cultura nacional dos EUA e as identidades corporativas das grandes empresas americanas. Como este fenômeno foi gerado nas empresas de sociedade anônima, mais livres das amarras governamentais, formou-se uma estrutura de mercado global liderado pelas corporações americanas, ao redor dos paradigmas científicos surgidos no século XX. A maioria gozava dos princípios de liberdade e igualdade, garantidos pela autorregulamentação da economia. A metodologia utilizada para obter os resultados desta problematização, se constituiu de pesquisa exploratória caracterizada pela investigação dos marcos históricos, antropológicos e sociológicos relacionados à cultura e identidade, bem como sua reprodução no ambiente empresarial. A pesquisa bibliográfica explorou autores como: Emile Durkheim, George Mead, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Franz Boas, Nestor Canclini, Denis Cuche, Pierre Bourdieu, Frederick Taylor, Renato Ortiz, Arthur Schlesinger Jr e Philip Kotler. Dados e infográficos foram obtidos em publicações econômicas e artigos de websites especializados. A pesquisa permitiu concluir que as tendências liberal e conservadora, que se alternam na história americana, definem o nível de envolvimento das corporações do país, observando tanto as inclinações mercadológicas quanto os Governos. Nessa combinação de fenômenos se verifica a empresa americana ser construída, inicialmente, em volta da teoria do laissez-faire e tornar-se modelo internacional por meio dos princípios da administração científica. Posteriormente, adaptou-se ao New Deal, encaminhou sua identidade para uma empresa do tipo global e por fim, atualmente, se experimenta certo declínio de sua influência em função dos mercados transnacionais que estão sendo configurados desde 1980. AbstractThis article aims to analyze the correlation between the values development process that shaped the national culture of the USA and the corporate identities of large American companies. As this phenomenon was generated in corporations, freer from government bonds, a global market structure led by American corporations was formed, around the scientific paradigms that emerged in the 20th century. The majority enjoyed the principles of freedom and equality, guaranteed by the economy self-regulation. The methodology used to obtain the results of this problematization, consisted of exploratory research characterized by the investigation of historical, anthropological and sociological landmarks related to culture and identity, as well as their reproduction in the business environment. The bibliographic research explored authors such as: Emile Durkheim, George Mead, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Franz Boas, Nestor Canclini, Denis Cuche, Pierre Bourdieu, Frederick Taylor, Renato Ortiz, Arthur Schlesinger Jr and Philip Kotler. Data and infographics were obtained from economic publications and articles from specialized websites. The research concluded that the liberal and conservative tendencies, which alternate in American history, define the level of involvement of the country's corporations, observing both the market inclinations and the governments. In this combination of events, we saw the American company being built initially around the theory of laissez-faire and becoming an international model through the principles of scientific management. Subsequently, he adapted to the New Deal, forwarded his identity to a global company and finally, he currently experiences a certain decline in his influence because of the transnational markets that have been configured since 1980. Анотація:

The article substantiates the need to expand the methodological field of research on reading problems within bibliography through the use of a genealogical approach. It is stated that the phenomenon of reading has its own history in the bibliographic discourse, represented by the psychology and sociology of reading. Nowadays, it is studied in the most promising complex areas of modern bibliographic thought, such as book culture and book communication. It is concluded that in order to understand all the processes that are currently taking place with the practice of reading in modern conditions, a critical analysis of the works of humanities researchers who in one way or another raise the problems of reading is necessary. It is noted that today the study of reading is represented by various theories that were formed within the framework of the French (phenomenological, existentialist and post-structuralist orientation), German (phenomenological and hermeneutic orientation) and American (neopragmatic orientation) schools of literature. An attempt to use a genealogical approach to the analysis of the phenomenon of reading in the electronic age by the German-American philosopher, literary theorist and cultural historian Hans Ulrich Humbrecht is considered. He looks for his attempts to explain the peculiarities of reading practices in the electronic age in genealogical prerequisites and, first of all, in the changes taking place in "social constructions of time". H. U Humbrecht concludes that predictions about the future of reading are problematic. The starting point from which one should start, in his opinion, is to focus attention on those specific institutional and chronotopic conditions under which the electronic revolution began. It is concluded that only after studying the essential features of electronic communication, we will be able to get closer to understanding the processes that are happening/will happen with books and reading in the future.

The National Library of Jamaica, created in 1979 from the West India Reference Library (WIRL), had to define its role and functions in the light of the existence of a well developed public library system which served the entire island, as well as a university library system and a fair number of small special libraries. Staff first had to be made aware of how the newly designated library differed from the old WIRL, which although well known for its outstanding collection of ‘Westindiana’ was primarily an urban-based library. The media were used to present information on the role and functions of the new library, which would perform all the accepted fundamental functions of national libraries in developed countries, except that relating to the coverage of foreign literature; in addition it would also be involved in interlending and document supply. Jamaica is a small developing country in which the European/North American-based culture and the African-influenced folk culture coexist. The library therefore recognizes the importance of developing collections of ephemera, oral history and folklore. There is a small preservation and conservation facility. In serving as the national bibliographic centre, it produces the national bibliography and creates various other bibliographic tools of national use. As the focal point of the national information system, it has developed a national referral service to aid interlending. Current awareness services are offered to library and information professionals, there is a programme of mounting exhibitions, and strong international links are maintained. Growth and development have been severely hampered by dwindling financial resources, which have resulted in some cutbacks to services. Nevertheless, the library has firmly established itself as an important cultural institution and as a leader in Caribbean library and information work.

How small in fact were the differences between and within the Irish communities overseas, and between their cultures and work achievements and those of their host societies? The past decade has seen the arrival of fairly complete bibliographies of the Irish diaspora in the United States and in Britain, and substantial bibliographical essays on the Irish in Canada and in Australia. The pioneer volume of Hartigan and Hickman, compiled outside the academic grid and its resources, is welcome, intelligent and full of small surprises, despite some odd omissions (e.g. all but one of Denis Gwynn’s relevant titles). Yet, unlike Patrick Blessing, they could not rely on and collate existent bibliographies, as he could do with those of J. T. Ellis and Robert Trisco on American Catholic history (1982), Daniel Casey and Robert Rhodes on Irish-American fiction (1979), and W. C. Miller (1975) and Séamus Metress (1981) on the bibliography of Irish-America overall.

Abstract This article aims to compare and contrast the concepts of subjectivity represented in literature and constructed in borders: physical and imaginary geopolitical sites that have positioned identities in the margins throughout history. The comparative analysis examines the representation of marginal identities in literary texts, specifically those written by authors belonging to hyphenated cultures such as the Cuban-American Gustavo Pérez-Firmat (1994), “Bilingual Blues,” and Mexican-American Gloria Anzaldúa’s “La encrucijada,” among others, mentioned in the bibliography. The study shows that the portrayal of subjectivity and subalternity in literary texts contends with diverse discourses of power and hefty political structures that tend to repress and to delimit character’s development and conditions as human beings living in the United States.

For all the lip-service French culture pays to reason and logic, it undergoes periodic eruptions of déraison or unreason. In the wake of Napoleon’s defeat, ballroom dancing began to be infiltrated by such unbridled popular dances as the cancan and the chahut. Exuberant, even bacchanalian physical display served as a safety-valve in a heavily censored society. In the Second Empire, four working-class amateurs introduced the high-kicking, parodic Clodoche quadrille at the Paris Opéra. A non-verbal equivalent of the Marx Brothers, they became bywords through the Western hemisphere of zany, comic demonstrations of the hysteric convulsions described by the medical establishment. Laurence Senelick is Fletcher Professor Emeritus of Drama and Oratory at Tufts University, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a contributor to the International Encyclopedia of Dance. His many books include British Music Hall: A Bibliography (1981), The Age and Stage of George L. Fox (1999), and Cabaret Performance 1890–1940 (2001–2005).

Italians have long been the exception to generalizations about ethnic American Catholicism. As early as the 1880s, American bishops considered them a “problem.” In 1946, Henry J. Browne summarized the “problem”: Italians did not regularly attend mass, did not receive the sacraments, did not contribute to the support of the church, did not educate their children in their faith, did not respect the clergy, and did not appreciate that they should be doing better in all these areas. Although Browne's work has become the subject of revisionist criticism among students of Italian American Catholicism, specialists in other aspects of American Catholicism have incorporated into their work generalizations generated by the Italian-American experts.James Sanders's study of Chicago parochial schools referred to Italians as least likely to support such schools. David J. O'Brien's history of the diocese of Syracuse emphasizes the difficulties Italians faced and the troubles they created for the clergy and hierarchy. Dolan's survey of American Catholic history has a large bibliography on which to base its conclusion that “thereligion of the [southern Italian] people was not the same as the official religion of the church.

Latin America has a rich, varied and very valuable bibliographic and documentary heritage, beginning with the pre-Hispanic pictorial productions - the famous codexes produced in Mexico. In 1539 the first American book was printed in Mexico City. Through the three centuries of colonial domination printing and the book were used as much for evangelizing the natives as for supporting the administration, and eventually also as a tool of the learned elite. During the 19th century, after the achievement of independence, the culture of colonization was ignored or rejected, resulting in numerous collections and other smaller works leaving the country, legally or illegally. ABINIA has now developed a number of projects aimed at saving the region's bibliographic heritage, but a consistent and sustainable policy still needs to be defined. The national libraries are in a good position to organize cooperative programmes, professional exchanges and projects focused on new technology for information management.

Анотація:

The study of Anglicisms in Spanish has been significant since the last half of the twentieth century. After an initial period of purist publications, the approach to this sociolinguistic phenomenon became more descriptive and academic in the 1980s. Today’s bibliography is relatively extensive, including works which have widely analysed the impact of the Anglo-American culture on different areas, as well as suggested a variety of definitions and taxonomies of Anglicisms. However, some domains that are greatly influenced by the English language in Spain such as the terminology used in gyms have not been examined so far, since the published literature has focused on specific sports (football, tennis, etc.). The aim of this paper is to compile and analyse the most frequent Anglicisms in the lexicon used in sports activities offered by Spanish gyms, as an introductory approach to prospective research. We have studied a sample of 268 Anglicisms taken from the web sites of 15 gyms. Our analysis is not limited to the description of the linguistic features of these Anglicisms but it also explores the possible reasons for their use.

The study of children's marginalia in manuscripts and printed books enables us to reassess traditional assumptions about bibliography, subjectivity, and the literary imagination in the English and American traditions. Commentaries, signatures, and scribbling defacements—together with fictional representations of young people writing in books—illustrate relationships among canonical authority, playful subversion, commodity value, and archival preservation that all contribute to (and may critique) our current fascination with book history as a discipline.

Анотація:

Purpose: The current analysis aimed to review the state-of-the-art about innovation and organizational culture in enterprises placed or working in South America. Theoretical Framework: Innovation and organizational culture are critical concepts in management studies nowadays. In South America, in recent years, companies have had the trend to disrupt static and hierarchized organizations by allowing employees to participate actively in the organization's objectives. Moreover, flexible companies do not mean that hierarchies do not exist. Instead, it means that companies are eager to listen and accept the different points of view of the employees. Moreover, innovative companies seem to adapt rapidly to both beneficial and adverse environments. However, some firms resist changes and get revenues, but the evidence suggests that they put their sustainability in the long term. Design/Methodology/Approach: In consequence, the methodological approach was the employment of the PRISM method to depurate the initial bibliographic resources from EBSCO and RENATI. EBSCO was used to analyze papers, and RENATI to review theses. Initially, there were 78 articles and 271 theses to be examined. After the PRISM depuration, it was analyzed 35 papers and theses from the period lasting from 2012 to 2021. Findings: The results showed that flexible companies were more adaptative than rigid ones. Moreover, the literature suggested that flexible companies have more chances to be sustainable in the long term than other firms. Therefore, it is possible to state that innovation policies had a higher impact in flexible organizations than in rigid ones. Originality/Value: The value of the study relies on the systematic review of the current literature of innovation and organizational culture in South America which is the nearest international environment for Peruvian companies.
