Form, line, and surface are the catalysts for my work. I have been constructing nonrepresentational forms from clay that I see as translations. They are reflective of my conversation with the material and a record of the firing. The pieces in the installation do not reference any specific object. They are my attempt to explore volume, line, scale, and repetition in objects designed to translate the process of wood firing. They are about physicality, passion, and process. Each object becomes an individual variation of the total process. Most forms and objects created in art have some reference to some other preexisting object and can have any variety of meanings attached to them. I know the viewer will create their own meaning and metaphor for this installation. My intention is to leave the specifics up to the viewer.

Lead based materials have shown to be important materials showing high piezoelectricity, colossal dielectric constant, ferroelectricity along with their good mechanical behaviour and resistance to corrosion. As a result, they have wide range of applications such as sensors, actuators, detectors, batteries, lead-painting pigments etc. However, due to high toxicity of lead and its nature to accumulate in the environment with gradually increasing concentrations, increasingly more health hazards are encountered. In this regard, replacing these lead based materials by lead free material with similar/higher level of dielectric properties is the driving force for research on lead free dielectric materials. In this work, we have studied few double perovskites structured dielectric materials and their solid solutions. The present work attempts to understand synthesis, structure and dielectric property of lead free double perovskite structure BaFe0.5Nb0.5O3, BaFe0.5Ta0.5O3 and solid solution of (x) BaFe0.5Nb0.5O3–(1-x)KNbO3 (x= 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1). This thesis work organized in seven chapters as given below. First two chapters describe the motivation behind the work and experimental technique used for synthesis and characterizes materials, chapter 3, 4, 5 and 6 described investigated material and chapter 7 summarizes the thesis. With the daily routine of texting over coffee or watching the news over dinner, "eating" seems like an act of having to do with something else. In a fast-paced society, a multi-functional mind become the basic abilities of modern people. Even when the table is full of mouth-watering delicacies, individual eyes always see the mobile phone screen. Most people tend to reduce the food information they feel to the word "delicious" in an instant without noticing the "five senses" and let it go. (Ishii Kezhi, Jacques Puisais, Sakai Shinji, Tian Yuquan, 2018) What is delicious? How do we define the line between taste good or bad? Miguel Sanchez Romera, a Spanish chef and neurosurgeon, once said that the tongue tastes sour, sweet, bitter and spicy, but there is no "delicious" message from the taste buds to the brain. In other words, there is no standard answer to delicious taste, and it is all judged by personal feelings. However, it is not only taste and smell that feels delicious. "Eating" contains a series of multi-sensory experiences, such as the color seen by the eyes, the aroma smelled by the nose, the freshness tasted on the tip of the tongue, the weight of the tableware in the hands, and the crisp sound heard by the ears, etc. A variety of factors influence the overall dining experience. Only when a person gets down to enjoy the food and try to express the feelings, can he or she truly experience the essence of delicious food through the five senses. This study will look for the elements of taste from the food we like to eat and the food that looks delicious, and summarize the four main elements: roundness, thickness, fineness and crispness. Based on these four elements, a series of food and utensils are created to present the word "delicious". In order to preserve the imagination space and create the beauty of distance, we do not deliberately imitate the real food, but create a delicious effect by presenting the natural texture of the ceramic creation. The part of the tableware is inspired by ice cream and popping sugar, both of which need to be held and directly touched with the tongue. Therefore, various decorations are matched in the round and full lines to form a tactile contrast. Finally, the work presents delicious food in three different ways through three different situations. Cuisine is decomposed into element areas of basic units, to experience the delicious kitchen area from the cooking process, and finally to sit down and enjoy the delicious table area. The three stages of knowing the ingredients, making the food and enjoying the food are to experience the delicious food step by step, so as to create a level of experience for visiting the exhibition.

Relaxor ferroelectrics have been a subject of intense research owing to their interesting physical properties such as high dielectric constant and giant electro-striction. Unlike the conventional lead based relaxors, the relaxors belonging to Aurivillius family of oxides have received much less attention because of the poor understanding of the origin of the relaxor behavior and high processing temperatures involved. In the present investigations, an attempt has been made to understand the origin of relaxor behavior of the materials belonging to Aurivillius family of oxides. The structure and relaxor behavior of BaBi2Nb2O9 (BBN) has been established via the XRD, electron diffraction and dielectric spectroscopy. The results are compared with that of a normal ferroelectric like SrBi2Nb2O9 belonging to the same family as well with that of a conventional relaxor like PMN. The results indicate that the dielectric behavior of BBN is significantly different from that of the conventional relaxors like BBN with very slow broadening of relaxation times and was attributed to the absence of significant polar ordering. To substantiate the existing understanding, studies have been carried out by adopting different strategies such as B-site and A-site cationic substitutions and texturing of the ceramics. Vanadium doping on B-site was found to decrease the sintering temperatures significantly. Aliovalent La3+ doping was found to affect the dielectric behavior strongly with substantial decrease of the freezing temperature and dielectric constants which shows that the relaxor behavior of BBN is highly sensitive to A-site order-disorder. The (00l) textured ceramic of pure and vanadium doped BBN was fabricated via a simple melt-quenching technique and was found to exhibit a significant dielectric and pyroelectric anisotropy. A new class of relaxor compositions (K0.5La0.5Bi2Nb2O9 & K0.5La0.5Bi2Ta2O9) have been synthesized and characterized. These new compounds exhibited interesting physical properties which are akin to that of the conventional lead based relaxors. The presence of superlattice reflections in the electron diffractin patterns recorded on these compounds establish the presence of polar nano regions of significant size. These relaxor crystallites at nano/micro level embedded in a glass matrix have been found to be very promising from their physical properties view point.

For me, ceramics is not merely an art form but a representation of state of mind and the value of self-beliefs. While appreciating pottery, I addict to the warmth and atmosphere I feel when I hold it more than just admiring its appearance. This is the very reason why hand-made ceramics cannot be replaced completely. Nowadays, due to the change of times, the progress of technology, the transformation of family patterns and the change of economic structure, ceramic industry has turned to become more refined and textured. In order to pass down the value of handcrafting, I think re-creation with the times is immediate and necessary. My thesis focuses on the Leach Pottery, a British pottery studio where I went on internship and gained the experience of making Western-style ceramics five years ago. Although the time I spent there was considerably short, the system and development of British ceramics still gave me deep inspiration, such as exploring the different context between Western and Eastern ceramics, learning how to transform and operate ceramic art studios in a new style, researching on the establishment of brands and re-creation of products, etc. Until now, the Leach Pottery is still trying to make difference and innovation in the area of brand management, which inspires my desire to dig deep and figure out more. On the other hand, as a worldwide and famous ceramic manufacturing country, Taiwan has a long history and contains good skill of ceramic making, which makes it a quite suitable place for the development of ceramic creation. In addition, Taiwan is the place where I started my interest in pottery. In order to fulfill my original dream, I’ll try my best to undertake these cultural vitals and promote Taiwan's pottery creation and development toward the world stage. Throughout this thesis, I will introduce the foundation, transformation and development of Leach Pottery, try to figure out the re-creation and operation essence of them, and combine it with Taiwanese ceramics and Chinese culture in order to build an innovative personal brand. To sum up, although the culture of ceramics in Taiwan and the United Kingdom are totally different, making it more likely to encounter frictions through the re-creation process; however, the mutual impact of the two cultures will surely stimulate a refreshing spark, and it is expected to bring another brand-new look to the ceramic art world.

In this study, (Bi1-xNdx)FeO3 (BNFO) material was selected and tape-casting technique was adopted to reduce the thickness of sample up to 135μm and 75μm (thickness of bulks ~150μm) for effectively improving photovoltaic effects. BiFeO3 has high Curie temperature (Tc), ~ 870 ℃; Neel temperature (TN) near 373℃, it shows ABO3 pervoskite structure of R3c (rhombohedral) with ferroelectricity, anti-ferromagnetism, and multiferroic properties BiFeO3 displays quite potential for photoelectric development, because of its smaller band gap (2.7eV), photovoltaic property is more sig-nificant than other ferroelectric perovskite materials. Nd doping in the A-site (Bi1-xAx)FeO3(A=Nd3+) reveals structural sta-bility and reduce band gap up to 2.2eV. Nd doped BFO ceramics using tape casting technique to understand processing parameters of thick films for photovoltaic applications. The experimental results display that the density of powders is 14.285g/cm3 by true specific gravity method. The ratio of powders and organic solvent is 60:40 to get a optimum slurry. In dispersant addition, the weight ratio of suitable dispersants is 1g powder : 0.064 g dispersant using settlement experiment. The green tapes were sintered at 930 ℃ and its mi-crostructure reveals densification profile using SEM observation. BFO-7%Nd ceramic with different thickness (150μm,135μm,75μm) were sputtered with ITO and Au as electrode on both sides to measure photovoltaic properties. In this study, lanthanum chloride (Lanthanum (III) chloride, LaCl3), tungsten chloride (Tungsten (IV) chloride, WCl4) was used as a metal precursor, and Urea was added to dissolve in the ethylene glycol solvent with at atmosphere, the perovskite structure of LaWO0.6N2.4 powder with was successfully synthesized by heat treatment at 850 °C in an ammonia atmosphere. By X-ray diffraction instrument, After one hour of temperature, the LaWO0.6N2.4 signal peak (JCPDS-84-162) was gradually formed. When holding temperature for three hours of LaWO0.6N2.4 pure phase was obtained in a transitional crystal phase was first been found. The UV-vis results show that the energy gap varies with the heat treatment time, and the change increases from 0.55 eV (heat treatment 10~45 minutes) to 1.55 eV (heat treatment 2~3 hours), and the specific surface area analyzer (BET) is used. It was found that the specific surface area of the sample was 14.15 m2/g when the temperature was maintained for one hour, and the specific surface area of 15.06 m2/g was slightly increased after the sample was held for three hours. Through a transmission electron microscope (TEM), the yttrium oxytung tungsten perovskite powder was heat-treated for 20 minutes at a temperature of 20 minutes, and the structure of the crystal was taken and a sample was drawn in the sample. The elemental ratio line is found to have a ratio of (Lanthanum : Tungsten) is 1:1, but in which the oxygen atom occupies a majority position compared with the nitrogen atom, in the high-resolution photo, we can find the layer spacing and theoretical structure (LaWO0.6N2.4) .The structure layer spacing D nm has a difference in the size it might be around 10 picometers (picometer, pm). It may be that the oxygen atoms are slightly larger than the nitrogen atoms, and the oxynitride tungsten perovskite structure is rich in oxygen and has not been nitrided. In the selected area diffraction (SADE), there are obvious diffraction circles, and the corresponding planes also have this phenomenon, which may echo the X-ray diffraction results that occur at different temperatures during the heat treatment.

In this study, Ni coated Cu foils were used as the substrate to prepare flexible piezoelectric electro-generators. Two submicron ceramic powders, commercial PZT (Lead zirconate titanate) and Pb-free BaTiO3 synthesized by thermal spray pyrolysis were chosen to fabricate piezoelectric composite layers by means of spin coating and screen printing as well. To enhance the dielectric performance, several organic binders have been adopted, and sintering under thermal compression was carried on to reduce the porosity. With the test sample area of 15X35mm, PZT - ethyl cellulose devices generated a top output voltage of 0.45V (Vav = 0.34 V) while sintered at 280 oC for 30 min under the pressure of 0.25MPa. The dielectric loss was 1.76% and the phase was -89.02o. For BaTiO3- ethyl cellulose ones, the top output voltage of 0.25V (Vav =0.22 V ) sintered at 280 oC for 30 min under the pressure of 0.5MPa. The dielectric loss obtained was 4.32% and the phase was -87.23o. Doubling the device area to 30 x 70 mm, the top voltage for PZT devices reached 1.3 V, while that for BaTiO3 devices was increased to 0.5V.

In this study, various sintering methods, including pressurless high-temperature sintering (650~850°C), hot-pressed sintering (750°C) and cold sintering (< 120°C with high pressure hydrothermal reaction), were applied to the densification of yttrium- aluminum-garnet glass-phosphor composites. The glass powders were ball-milled, where the average particle size was reduced from 0.7 μm to 0.2 μm, before mixing with the phosphor powders (13.5 μm in average particle size). The ball milling process could improve the packing efficiency of the glass-phosphor composite. In the pressureless sintering process, the molded green compacts were sintered under 750°C in different isothermal time. After sintering for 4 hours, the density of glass-phosphor composites achieved 96.1% of the theoretical sintered density. Further, in the hot-pressed sintering process, an additional 30N force was applied when the green compacts were sintered under 750°C. If add the force to 52N, the glass-phosphor composites could achieved 99.6%.Gasket made up of Al2O3, TZP, and AlN were used in this process respectively. The sample done with Al2O3 and TZP gasket could reach more than 98 % of the theoretical sintered density, while the one with the AlN gasket could only reach 96 %. This shows the thermal conductivity coefficient also has influence on the densification of the hot-pressed glass-phosphor composites. Finally, in the cold sintering process, the Glass-Phosphor composite was applied 300 MPa under 120°C for 10 minutes. Also, NaOH solution was used to enhance the dissolution-precipitation reaction of SiO2. In addition, to fill the void between the cglass-phosphor composites, TEOS was added to facilitate the precipitation of SiO2. The cold-sintered glass-phosphor composites achieved 85.7 % average relative density. The microstructure and pore-size distribution were also studied.

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is an effective method for treating nitrogen oxides in flue gas. This study tests the commercially available catalysts for treating NO in the simulated gas to understand the deNOX performance in air of tested catalysts. This study aimed to simulate the exhaust gas in the deNOX system, to explore the effects of different exhaust gas compositions (water vapor, SO2), and to understand the effect of reducing the NH3/NO ratio. The results show that the four catalysts (S, D, J, C) have a good effect at the operating temperature of 300℃, and then choose the D and J catalysts as the main test catalysts. Test these two catalysts the degree of resistance of the water vapor and SO2. The catalysts D and J can have good deNOX efficiency (>95%) under the conditions of Normal Hourly Space Velocity 4500 hr-1, reaction temperature 300℃, 0vol% water content and non-toxicity. Under the influence of water vapor, when the operating temperature is between 170 and 300℃, the water vapor slightly reduce the deNOX effect but the degree of influence does not increase with time. The SO2 toxicity test results show that the deNOX efficiency did not change significantly during 24 hours of operation at 300℃, water content of 15 vol% and SO2 concentration within 50 ppm. When the SO2 concentration is higher than 100 ppm, the deNOX efficiency gradually decreases with time, and ammonium sulfate salt covers the catalyst surface.

The present work broaches the physics of light-matter interaction, chiefly using nonlinear optical spectroscopy in a newly developed framework termed as Photon Management Concept. This way, existing fragments dealing with specific properties of harmonic and upconversion nanoparticles (HNPs/UCNPs) are consolidated into a full and coherent picture with the primary goal of understanding the underlying physical processes and their impact on the application side, especially in terms of imaging techniques, via suitable experimental and numerical studies. Contemporary optical setups involving contrast-enhancing agents are frequently limited in their excitation and detection configurations owing to a specialization to a select number of markers. As a result, the bandwidth of experimental methods and specimens that may be investigated is severely restricted in a large number of state-of-the-art setups. Here, an alternative approach involving HNPs and UCNPs, respectively, is presented providing an overview from their synthesis to optical characterization and to potential fields of application. Based on their inherent flexibility based on their nonlinear optical response, especially in terms of wavelength and intensity tunability, the PMC alleviates prevalent limitations by dynamically adapting the setup to a sample instead of the preliminary culling to a reduced number of eligible specimens that must not change their optical properties significantly during investigation. The use of HNPs supersedes such concerns due to their nearly instantaneously generated, strongly anti-Stokes shifted, coherent emission capable of producing radiation throughout the visible spectral range, including infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths. This way, HNPs transcend the traditional field of imaging and introduces potential applications in optomanipulation or holographic techniques. Thorough (nonlinear) optical characterization of UCNPs and alkali niobate HNP ensembles is performed to assess the fundamental physical mechanisms interwoven with numerical studies leading to their wide-ranging applicability. Final remarks show that HNPs are ideal candidates for realization of the PMC and yet hold an even further potential beyond current prospects.
