AbstractThe Grenvillian granulite-facies complex on Holsnøy island, Bergen Arcs, W. Norway, has been metamorphosed at eclogite-facies conditions during the Caledonian orogeny (ca. 425 Ma). The granulite-eclogite facies transition takes place along shear zones and fluid pathways. Mineral thermobarometry indicates PT conditions of 800–900°C and 8–10 kbar for the Proterozoic granulite facies metamorphism and 700–800°C and 16–19 kbar for the eclogite-forming event. Quartz in the granulite facies complex contains CO2 fluid inclusions with less than 2.5 mole percent N2; the molar volumes are compatible with the PT conditions of the Proterozoic granulite metamorphism. Quartz in pegmatitic quartz + omphacite and quartz + phengite/paragonite veins coeval with shear-zone eclogites contain N2 ± CO2 fluid inclusions. Combined laser Raman microanalysis and microthermometry show that the least disturbed inclusions have XCO2 = 0.1–0.3, and molar volumes less than 40 cm3/mole, which may agree with the PT conditions during Caledonian high-pressure metamorphism. Younger, low-density N2 and N2-H2O fluid inclusions are the results of decrepitation and redistribution of early inclusions during the retrograde PT evolution of the eclogites.

Earthquakes in the continental crust commonly occur in the upper 15 to 20 km. Recent studies demonstrate that earthquakes also occur in the lower crust of collision zones and play a key role in metamorphic processes that modify its physical properties. However, details of the failure process and sequence of events that lead to seismic slip in the lower crust remain uncertain. Here, we present observations of a fault zone from the Bergen Arcs, western Norway, which constrain the deformation processes of lower crustal earthquakes. We show that seismic slip and associated melting are preceded by fracturing, asymmetric fragmentation, and comminution of the wall rock caused by a dynamically propagating rupture. The succession of deformation processes reported here emphasize brittle failure mechanisms in a portion of the crust that until recently was assumed to be characterized by ductile deformation.

AbstractEarthquakes at lower crustal depths are common during continental collision. However, the coseismic weakening mechanisms required to propagate an earthquake at high pressures are poorly understood. Transient high-pressure fluids or melts have been proposed as a viable mechanism, but verifying this requires direct in situ measurement of fluid or melt overpressure along fault planes that have hosted dynamic ruptures. Here, we report direct measurement of highly overpressurized frictional melts along a seismic fault surface. Using Raman spectroscopy, we identified high-pressure quartz inclusions sealed in dendritic garnets that grew from frictional melts formed by lower crustal earthquakes in the Bergen Arcs, Western Norway. Melt pressure was estimated to be 1.8–2.3 GPa on the basis of an elastic model for the quartz-in-garnet system. This is ~0.5 GPa higher than the pressure recorded by the surrounding pseudotachylyte matrix and wall rocks. The recorded melt pressure could not arise solely from the volume expansion of melting, and we propose that it was generated when melt pressure approached the maximum principal stress in a system subject to high differential stress. The associated palaeostress field demonstrates that a strong lower crust accommodated up to 1 GPa differential stress during the compressive stage of the Caledonian orogeny.

Abstract. Seismic faulting causes wall rock damage, which is driven by both mechanical and thermal stress. In the lower crust, co-seismic damage increases wall rock permeability, permits fluid infiltration and triggers metamorphic reactions that transform rock rheology. Wall rock microstructures reveal high-stress conditions near earthquake faults; however, there is limited documentation on the effects of a thermal pulse coupled with fluid infiltration. Here, we present a transmission electron microscopy study of co-seismic microfractures in plagioclase feldspar from lower crustal granulites from the Bergen Arcs, Western Norway. Focused ion beam foils are collected 1.25 mm and 1.8 cm from a 1.3 mm thick eclogite facies pseudotachylyte vein. Dislocation-free plagioclase and K-feldspar aggregates in the microfractures record a history of fluid introduction and recovery from a short-lived high-stress state caused by slip along the nearby fault. The feldspar aggregates retain the crystallographic orientation of their host and are elongated subparallel to the pseudotachylyte. We propose that plagioclase partially amorphized along the microfractures at peak stress conditions followed by repolymerization to form dislocation-free grain aggregates. Repolymerization and recrystallization were enhanced by the infiltration of fluids that transported Ca and K into the microfractures. Subsequent cooling led to exsolution of intermediate plagioclase compositions and the formation of the Bøggild–Huttenlocher intergrowth in the grains from the fracture closest to the pseudotachylyte. Our findings provide unequivocal evidence that the introduction of fluids in the microfractures occurred within the timescale of the thermal perturbation, prompting rapid annealing of damaged wall rock soon after earthquake rupture.

<p><strong>Aim.</strong> Assessment of normal and variant aortic arch anatomy in patients with type A aortic dissection and aneurysm of the arch and descending thoracic aorta.</p><p><strong>Methods.</strong> We retrospectively studied computer tomography (CT) data of chest organs with contrast in patients who underwent reconstruction of the aortic arch in type I aortic dissection according to DeBakey classification (n = 61) and resection of the aortic arch and descending thoracic aorta aneurysm (n = 14) at the Meshalkin National Medical Research Center, Novosibirsk, Russian Federation. The control group included patients without aortic arch pathology (n = 52). To identify relationships between the anatomical type of aortic arch and the risk of aortic pathology development, univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analyses were used.</p><p><strong>Results.</strong> Our analysis revealed four types of aortic arch anatomy. Normal aortic arch anatomy occurred in 66.1 % of patients (n = 84), the proportion of abnormalities of the left common carotid artery was 30 % (bovine aortic arch occurred in 15 %, and the same site of origin of left common carotid artery and brachiocephalic trunk occurred in 15 %). Divergence of the left vertebral artery from the aortic arch between the left common carotid and left subclavian arteries occurred in 3.1 % (n = 4), and the combination of “bovine trunk” and divergence of the left vertebral artery from the aortic arch was detected in 0.8 % patients (n = 1). Logistic regression analyses revealed no statistically significant relationships between variant aortic arch anatomy and the development of type A aortic dissections and aortic arch aneurysms. The presence of the common origin of brachiocephalic trunk and left common carotid artery was associated with a reduced risk of acute aortic dissection type I by 89 %, or an OR of 0.11 (95% CI: 0.03–0.46) (p = 0.002).</p><p><strong>Conclusion.</strong> Our data will help with future planning surgical interventions on the aortic arch and descending thoracic aorta.</p><p>Received 17 June 2020. In 1971, Stephen Hearst, head of the BBC Music and Arts department, commissioned John Berger to make a television series on topics of his choosing. With Mike Dibb, then a young producer/director in the department, Berger made the four-part television series Ways of Seeing. Following its success, BBC Publications commissioned Berger and Dibb to turn the television programme into a book, a project for which Richard Hollis, a graphic designer Berger had previously worked with on the magazine New Society and his novel G., was brought in. Together with script consultant Chris Fox and artist Sven Blomberg, this group produced the book Ways of Seeing, jointly published by the BBC and Penguin Books in 1972. In this conversation with Juliette Kristensen, Mike Dibb and Richard Hollis discuss the history of the making of the television series and the book, Ways of Seeing.

Morningness-eveningness refers to the preference people have regarding the time they like to rise, conduct activities, and go to bed. People denoted as “morning types” (“larks”) like to rise early in the morning and go to bed early, while “evening types” (“owls”) prefer to sleep until later in the day and stay up until later at night. Various self-report instruments that measure morningness-eveningness have been developed. The aim of this study was to validate seven different self-report measures on morningness-eveningness using actigraphic data. One hundred and sixty-six students (mean age 21.4 years, range 19–30) were recruited from the University of Bergen and Bergen University College. The participants completed the self-report measures and wore an actigraph for seven days. The results showed that all self-report measures were in concordance with actigraphy-measured bed times, rise times, and the nadir for physical activity. In addition, some of the instruments were sensitive to differences between morning and evening types in their total sleep time on weekend nights or their stability in the activity curve across days as measured by actigraphy. Both the strengths and weaknesses of the present study are discussed, and proposals for future research are presented.

Surrounding his early work in art and comics, this 2020 interview conducted with Dave McKean investigates his first years within the comics community with comics luminaries such as Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison and Karen Berger. In it, McKean reflects on his early years in the world of art, those first meetings with DC Comics alongside Gaiman, and their inculcation into the ‘independent spirit’ of the Vertigo aesthetic and brand. McKean offers direct remark and commentary on his work on books such as The Sandman, Black Orchid and Hellblazer. In the end, even many years later, he still remains somewhat ‘conflicted’ and ‘undecided’ about DC’s editorial department and Karen Berger in her capacities as an editor, or, at least, as his editor.
