Dr. Elizabeth Stokoe is one of Europe’s foremost authorities on identity-in-interaction. Although her work does not focus on foreign language learning contexts per se, many scholars and students of identity in Japan are familiar with her 2006 book Discourse and Identity, co-authored with Dr. Bethan Benwell, and her qualitative yet strongly empirical approach to documenting identity-in-interaction through Conversation Analysis (CA) and Membership Categorization Analysis (MCA). As a coeditor of CALJ, I would like to draw your attention to the rising importance of identity studies in the EFL setting and their contribution to the field. The Socratic imperative “know thyself” has inspired teacher researchers around the world (Benwell & Stokoe, 2006; Cheung, 2015; Johnson & Golombek, 2016; Norton, 2013) to raise awareness towards knowledge-power relations affecting our own constitution as subjects (Foucault, 1980). From a post-structuralist view, the comprehension of identity as something not given but constituted has illuminated a type of research more interested in revealing how interior and exterior forces—in Deleuze’s (1993) words—influence our constitution as subjects of a practice. In the field of EFL, research examining identity contributes to the understanding of who English teachers and learners are and how these identities are related to the teaching and learning process.

Анотація:

This article aims to preserve the Minahasa cultural identity in the presence of Christianity. The problem is focused on the determination of the identity of the community practicing ritual culture that is boldly demonstrating the cultural identity of the Minahasa people who have identified Christianity. The ritual ritual itself is an ancient practice of belief that is almost gone. To maintain the identity of the community in the midst of Christianity, people still do it. Ritualists negotiate their Christian identity in practice. Identity can flexibly adapt to an individual's circumstances. Therefore, together the existence of Christianity cannot kill culture and culture cannot reject the existence of Christianity. To approach this problem, Rappaport's theoretical references to rituals are used as a form of communication, Benwell and Stokeo's about identity theory as a matter of self-determination, and Burke and Stets about identities that determine the role of individuals where they are. In addition, the authors use the theory of identity negotiation from Ting-Toomey to see individual self-adjustment in other matters around it. Data was collected through field research at the research location in Watu Pinawetengan in Minahasa Regency, through interviews with ritual practitioners and analyzed qualitatively. This study concludes that, the existence of culture and Christianity in Minahasa goes together to develop cultural identity but also Christianity.

Abstract The phenomenon of brain drain migration from Greece, also known as Greek neomigration, has acquired an astoundingly massive character due to the ongoing economic crisis in the country. Considering that a migrant’s identity is defined by a physical move from one place to another, this paper aims at exploring the discourse practices of place-making by Greek neomigrants, focusing on the role of social media in this endeavour. Drawing on discourse analysis (Myers 2010; Aguirre and Graham Davies 2015), identity construction theories (Blommaert 2005; Benwell and Stokoe 2006), environmental psychology (Proshansky, Fabian and Kaminoff 1983) and discourse-centred online ethnography (Androutsopoulos 2008), this study presents and discusses empirical data from a Greek neomigrant settled in the UK, who writes about his migration experience on his blog as well as on his Twitter and Facebook accounts. The analysis demonstrates that the Greek neomigrant place identity construction can be realized through a complex of linguistic and discourse strategies, including comparison and evaluation, construction of in-groups and out-groups, language and script alternations, entextualisation of other voices, and visual connotations. It is shown that, for migrants, social media constitute significant outlets for place-making, constructing place identity and asserting (or eschewing) belonging. In so doing, it also brings to the surface crucial social, cultural and psychological aspects of the current Greek neomigration phenomenon and confirms the potential of social media discourses to heighten awareness of neomigrants’ dis/integrating processes, placing discourse analysis at the service of global mobility phenomena.

<p>This paper explores how academic discourse is reconceptualized as a professional practice via the web-mediated genre of TED talks (Technology, Entertainment and Design), popularizing speeches delivered by experts in fields that range from the ‘hard’ disciplines to the social sciences and the humanities. More precisely, this study compares two corpora of academic spoken discourse, i.e., a corpus of transcribed TED talks given by academics (TED_ac) and a corpus of university lecture transcripts (MICASE_lect) drawn from the <em>Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English </em>(MICASE) to understand how academics’ communicative purposes differ in these two settings. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Critical Genre Analysis (Bhatia 2012) and Discourse Analysis (Goffman 1981; Fairclough 1989; Pennycook 1994; De Fina 1995; Benwell/Stokoe 2006; De Fina 2006), the present study sets out to investigate ways in which academics make use of language on the TED stage to achieve their “private intentions” as professionals (Bhatia 2012), e.g., building up their identity as experts as well as promoting their research and scholarship, rather than training a group of novices in their discipline or merely informing mass audiences. To this end, consideration is given to the distribution of first and second person pronouns in the two pragmatic contexts under investigation. Special emphasis is placed on referents and discourse functions of the pronoun <em>we</em>, which is significantly more frequent in TED_ac than in MICASE_lect. Despite its language-centered approach, this study has a marked sociological intent, as it casts light on an instance of academic discourse seen as an example of “professional practice” embedded in the wider context of a “professional culture” (Bhatia 2012).</p>

The tradition of incorporating CALL into the language-learning curriculum goes back to the early 1980s at Coventry University, and since then has evolved in keeping with changes in the technology available (Corness 1984; Benwell 1986; Orsini-Jones 1987; Corness et al 1992; Orsini-Jones 1993). Coventry University is at present pioneering the integration of hypermedia into the curriculum for the teaching of Italian language and society.
