This study explores how JFL learners take a benefactive stance in Japanese. As Jaffe (2009) observes, stance-taking "plays a complex role with respect to the naturalization of social and linguistic ideologies and the social structures they legitimate." The way in which language is used to take a stance always concerns the social context in which a speaker finds her/himself. In Japanese, benefactive verbs (kureru, ageru, morau and their honorific and humble equivalents) are indispensable stance indicators for showing gratitude or indebtedness. Such expressions do not really exist in English and their grammar is complex. It is assumed that JFL learners will struggle with taking a benefactive stance using those expressions. In order to analyze JFL learners' stance-taking, data were collected from narrative interviews with ten JFL learners who are currently in 300- and 400-level university courses. In order to explore how learners attempt to show stance-reflecting benefaction, they were asked questions that aimed to elicit a speaker's feelings of gratitude. Some examples of such questions are, "Who do you appreciate the most in your life?" or "Who is the most generous person you know?" The data show that (1) learners do use (or attempt to use) benefactive verbs to indicate stance, (2) they also fail to use benefactive verbs in contexts where they are called for, and (3) they misuse benefactive verbs, e.g., using ageru instead of kureru. Furthermore, it revealed that learners tend to show stance using evaluation such as adjectives, adverbs, or ritual expressions that show appreciation but they fail to utilize benefactive verbs. This failure to project a benefactive stance can lead to miscommunication and/or misunderstanding between learners and Japanese speakers. I offer possible ways to promote learners' awareness of the benefaction in Japanese culture.

The present study aims at analyzing the Benefactive microscenes that emerge from news reports. The Benefactive microscenes may be represented by basically Benefactive predicators or by predicators form other semantic domains which have the Benefactive foregrounded. The analysis is carried out on a corpus of 164 microscenes from journalistic texts taken from The Washington Post online version # ww.washingtonpost.com # during a period of fifteen days in a row, in an attempt to encompass and enhance the Benefactive notion in the context of language in use, here represented by the political news reports. Fillmore (1968), Chafe (1970), Cruse (1973), Cook (1979, 1989), Nicolacópulos (1992,1995), Nicolacópulos & Conceição (1984), Oliveira (1999), Rocha (2003) and Weickert & Nicolacópulos (2005) have tried to tackle the multiplicity of meanings within Case Grammar, incorporated into Relational Semantics, in order to comprise the new senses and their effects constructed in the dynamism of language in use. Within this perspective, they have approached language meaning in different ways, be it expressing agency, experience, beneficiary, object, location, company, time, holism. However, there is still a lot to be researched in this area, mainly in the distinct notion of the beneficiary, which expresses the notions of possession, gain or loss, and transfer of property, and how it is lively represented in the modern English language. This work considers a microscene an #extended clause# which incorporates notions that are not necessarily expressed in the surface of the microscenes, but can be apprehended by the macroscene, the broader context of the text and by the associations the verb or predicator keeps with the other elements within the Benefactive microscenes. It was noticed that (i) this genre favors the presence of Benefactive microscenes, (ii) most of them emerge from basically Benefactive predicators (87.80%), and (iii) some from predicators from other semantic domains that in specific microscenes have the Benefactive sense foregrounded (12.19%). At the same time, it was observed that many basically Benefactive predicators make a metaphorical move (i) towards other semantic domains (Experiential, Comitative, Time) or (ii) towards a Benefactive subdomain, namely power-Benefactive.

This thesis is an examination of the role of architectural benefaction of the local elite on the urbanization of the Greek cities of Asia Minor in the Roman Imperial period, and its impact on the social status of the benefactor. While providing a theoretical framework for the nature of benefaction in antiquity and the pattern of architectural renewal of the Anatolian cities under the Roman influence, the thesis focuses on a single case study
the Hellenistic City Gate of Perge which was restored by Plancia Magna during the reign of Hadrian. After its renovation, the gate became an indispensible part of the urban activities of Perge and a source of pride for both the city and its donor. Hence, this study constitutes an attempt to investigate the involvement of Plancia Magna&rsquo
s architectural patronage within the Roman urbanization of Perge and also the transformation of the public persona of Plancia Magna in the center of the male-dominated Roman society.

This Bachelor’s thesis, financed by scholarships, companies and private individuals, was made as a part of the Energy engineering program at Halmstad University. It investigates the possibilities of solar power plants in India and how it is implemented in reality. The project was made in cooperation with the charity organization AVI, (Adventures and Volunteering in India) and during two months an off-grid solar power plant were installed at their boarding house in Kanwar Pura, India. The boarding house will be home for children during their education. Research of the Indian market and the first system design was made prior to our journey. The solar plant package was bought from an Indian company, Nordic India Solutions. Once the delivery arrived on site, the practical work begun. With help from the company a complete system was successfully installed. The Indian conditions are beneficial for solar power and since 2010 the market has grown rapidly. The National Solar Mission is one of the reasons for this development. Solar power has great preconditions and has a big part in Indian development, towards higher living standards and a decreasing use of coal.

This thesis focuses on the relative syntactic position of Polish inherent datives. In semantic terms, we propose that all dative-marked arguments in Polish de- note an entity mentally affected by a change, state or process which takes place within the personal sphere of the entity lexicalised as a dative DP. In syntactic terms, we propose that Polish dative DPs are applicatives, licensed by an Appl head, and that they come in two types, low and high, depend- ing on their syntactic position. Low applicatives merge below v while high applicatives merge above it. The merge position of an applicative determines its syntactic behaviour. In contrast to low applicatives, high applicatives can antecede anaphors, control adjunct participial clauses and depictive secondary predicates. We propose that these differences constitute reliable diagnostics for applicative types in Polish. With these tests, we analyse Polish recipients and benefactives as low applicatives and Polish experiencers as high applicatives. Moreover, we distinguish between applicatives that are free, e.g. benefactives in Polish, and those that are selected, e.g. Polish recipients. Applicatives selected by the verb merge first as part of v or the root, and they become applicatives on movement to [Spec;ApplP]. In contrast, non-selected applicatives merge directly in [Spec;ApplP], i.e. they are born as applicatives. We propose a participant im- plication test to differentiate between these two types. Moreover, extending the analysis beyond Polish data, we hypothesise that cross-linguistically, there exist two types of applicatives, verb-internal, projected as part of vP / VP, and verb-external, projected as part of ApplP. We take Polish datives to be of the latter type.

This study aims to describe the history and situation of the private contemporary art collections in Greece du ring the last century. Despite the strong presence of the phenomenon, studies on this subject are scarce, especially in regard to the contemporary period, which is often neglected in favor of the Archeological and Byzantine period. However, the phenomenon of collecting contemporary art is very present in Greece and it is closely linked to the political and social history, to phenomenas such as benefaction, diaspora and the economic growth of the country, from the eighties upon entry into the European Economic Community. Thus, the appearance of the phenomenon is constantly changing. What is studied here is a first approach to the various aspects of collecting contemporary art in relation to the cultural history of the country, through the portraits of many iconic Greek collectors who lived in the twentieth century. These art lovers have strongly influenced the artistic and cultural landscape of their country of origin - but also sometimes to their home countries - through the discovery of artists and the influence of taste. The latter was achieved especially because their activity was related to the establishment of the permanent collections of fine art museums and private foundations

What does honorific representation stand for? Starting from this apparently simple question, the present study explores the many aspects of the habit, beginning in the 4th century B.C. and developing through the Hellenistic period, of granting the benefactors a representation of themselves. Based on the honorific decrees and the archaeological evidence, the analysis is primarily material. Thus, the expectations and constraints guiding the choice of a medium, of a material and of a place of erection are first examined. In the case of a statue, its size, the type of its base and the way it is fixed are thoroughly studied. But with their erection, the life of the representations just begins: a few chapters are devoted to their cleaning and also to their mutilation, destruction and reuse. Iconography is the second main topic of the study. Through a description of the remaining works of art, a portrait of the ideal city reflected by the honorific representation is drawn, from the victorious generals to the women. The limits of the genre are also explored, through a study of the representations of heroes and kings, but also of children. Both material and iconographic studies support the historical analysis. An introductory focus on the origins of the honorific representation allows a determination of the specific aspects of public representation. Keeping those in mind as a reference, the analysis turns then to the less studied private honorific and commemorative representations. This large scope exploration leads finally to an examination of the social and political role of the honorific representation and of its evolution through the late Hellenistic period

In Japanese benefactive constructions, there is favor consciousness; however, it is not existed in Chinese benefactive constructions. The interferences of the mother tongue for Chinese speaking Japanese learners occur frequently. For example, they would regard the benefactive auxiliary verbs as Chinese prepositions indicating movement directions. On the other hand, even though learners are not aware of the favor consciousness, the benefactive constructions they use are not always unnatural. There is a probability that the benefactive constructions are flawless. The purpose of the thesis is to examine leaner’s acquisition of favor consciousness in Japanese benefactive constructions. Hence, a hypothesis on learner’s lack of favor consciousness is made. The survey will focus on whether the learners have favor consciousness when they use benefactive constructions. As to the approach, the data to examine is taken from 37 students’ 1221 compositions of “LARP at SCU” corpus by Soochow University. Benefactive constructions in the compositions, especially the type of “tekureru,” will be analyzed to see if the writers are favor-conscious. As to the result, even though learners may use natural benefactive constructions, they are not necessarily favor-conscious, which is the same as benefactive constructions being categorized and contrasted. Also, learners have other grammatical mistakes in addition to benefactive constructions, mainly because of their interference of mother tongue leading to directly translated sentences. Moreover, using “te-kureru” correctly does not necessarily mean the correct use of “te-morau” and “te-ageru.” In other words, learns using “te-kureru” naturally are not necessarily favor-conscious. Therefore, a further research on misused benefactive constructions is essential. The teaching of benefactive constructions should include the explanation of favor consciousness so that the misuse would be avoided.

The objective of this thesis is to research the expressions of using Japanese honorifics on benefactive in business writing. The methodology is to analyze the mistake of Taiwan Japanese learners through the judgement of native speakers. The research shows that the most often vocabulary Japanese learners use for asking help is「ITADAKU」; and「SASETEITADAKU」is the most frequent while they deliver the information to someone. In terms of the accuracy,「SASETEITADAKU」is more accurate that indicates it is easier to be understood and spoken for the second language speaker. For the occasion of grammar mistake, 「ITADAKU」is related to the verb transformation and the connective expressions vocabulary. The misuse of 「SASETEITADAKU」is related to the verb transformation and the appropriateness when using 「SASETEITADAKU」. Therefore, learning Japanese should pay more attention to the verb transformation. Beside, 「SASETEITADAKU」has its own restrictive conditions that not always correct for any situations. Teachers should instruct the proper way to use that. In addition, it’s incorrect to connect all of the verbs with the humble expressions of「ITADAKU」and「SASETEITADAKU」. The humble expressions which connect with intransitive verbs are essentially no exist. Additionally, it is also worth noting about the manner of business writing in Japanese. For example, avoid using the word「OMOIMASU」, the difference between affirmative and negative question expressions, and the skill of enquire etc. It is more effective for Japanese learners improve the accuracy of study business writing expressions while teacher instruct more guidance and examples to prove correct grammar.

This thesis discusses topics in the grammar of Lelepa, an Oceanic language spoken by about 500 people on the islands of Lelepa and Efate in the centre of the Vanuatu archipelago. The areas of grammar covered in the thesis are phonology (chapter 2), morphology (chapter 3), word classes (chapter 4), noun phrases (chapter 5), possession (chapter 6), clause structure and grammatical relations (chapter 7), verb classes and valency changing devices (chapter 8), the verb complex (chapter 9), complex predicates (chapter 10), aspect and modality (chapter 11), coordination and subordination (chapter 12). The phonemic inventory is of medium to small size, with fourteen consonants and five vowels. It includes two typologically rare labial-velar consonants. Stress is not phonemic. Syllables can be complex and consonant clusters are allowed in onset and coda positions. The most important phonological process is vowel reduction, which represent a significant driver of language change. Clausal word order is SVO. Oblique arguments follow the object(s), and adjuncts occur in initial or final position in the clause. An exception is the benefactive phrase, an adjunct encoding beneficiaries which occurs between the subject proclitic and the verb, and makes the verb complex a discontinuous structure. The benefactive phrase is cross-linguistically unusual and makes central Vanuatu languages distinctive. Of typological interest is the split dividing objects along two classes of transitive verbs. It has its source in a semantic distinction between significantly affected Ps and less affected Ps. However, the split is lexical because borrowed transitive verbs are systematically classified with verbs taking less affected Ps regardless of the degree of affectedness of their P. Lelepa has serial verb constructions but has also developed other verbal constructions grouped in the class of complex predicates, which comprise auxiliary verbs, serial verbs, post-verbs and viii clause-final particles. These encode a broad range of semantic distinctions including aspectual, modal and directional values, manner, intensification, cause-effect and result. Lelepa distinguishes between inalienable and alienable possession, but the possessive constructions have diverged from the typical Oceanic model. In particular, relational classifiers are not found in the language, and a construction reflecting alienable relationships distinguishes between human and non-human possessors. An unusual feature is the marking of mood and transitivity on certain verbs with Stem Initial Mutation. In this process, verbs switch their initial consonant from /f/ to /p/ according to particular mood and transitivity values. This process is known in Vanuatu language but often limited to mood marking, whereas Lelepa and other central Vanuatu languages also mark transitivity. The morphological structure is agglutinative, but many grammatical features are encoded by particles, especially in the verb complex. In the nominal domain, inflectional affixes include possessor-indexing suffixes, a prefixed article and derivational affixes generating deverbal nouns. Compounding is a feature of both nouns and verbs. Word classes are clearly defined, and the main open classes are nouns and verbs. Nominals can be derived through nominalisation of verb roots or substantivisation, a process deriving referential items from all word classes except nouns and pronouns.

The present thesis aims to explore benefaction and adversity (or malefaction) in Kanakanavu, an indigenous language spoken in the mountain areas of southern Taiwan. The two notions express affectedness because both involve a participant that is acted on in some way by an event (Smith, 2005). Based on Van Valin & LaPolla (1997), Kanakanavu benefaction can be categorized into three types including reason, substitution, and reception. For benefaction of reason, the beneficiary is an indirect cause of the event and benefited by obtaining satisfaction or enjoyment from it. The second type is benefaction of substitution. The benefited participant is exempted from the duty to carry out an action since someone substitutes as the actor. The third type concerns reception. The benefaction lies in that the beneficiary can receive a thing as the possessor. Intriguingly, we also observe an integrated type that comprises substitution and reception—recipient-benefaction. A recipient-benefactive event is composed of a creating scene followed by a transfer scene. The recipient is absent from the creating event and only partakes in the second event as a recipient that can engage with the given object. The research also includes the causative as a type of benefaction in that it relates to the expression of affectedness. In terms of the benefactive-causative, the beneficiary is usually the causer though it can be the causee. The causer is benefited by having the causee perform an action for himself/herself. On the other hand, the adversative-causative describes that the causer could have prevented a negative event from taking place but failed to. As opposed to benefaction, adversity or malefaction depicts an event the relevant participant (maleficiary) evaluates as bad. In Kanakanavu, three grammatical means are deployed for encoding—(1) (verb) lexical semantics, (2) the PV marker –ee, and (3) the causative. It is found that the maleficiary often holds possessive control over the object that is directly affected. In sum, the thesis endeavors to document the grammatical peculiarities of Kanakanvu through the specific topic of benefaction and adversity, hoping that the efforts will make contribution to preserving the linguistic treasure in Taiwan.

In the arid Mediterranean world the careful management of water was essential for survival. Control of this resource was akin to political power. Rome and its environs were no different: water was an important status symbol and granting public access to it was considered a particularly generous gesture. During the principate a successful emperor was expected to demonstrate concern for the needs of the populace and one of the most effective ways for him to do this was by providing abundant quantities of water. As a political tool, water proved to be invaluable in its versatility. Imperial gifts could manifest in the form of access to drinking water, leisure spaces such as public gardens and baths, or even spectacular games and shows given on purpose-built artificial lakes. Additionally, massive engineering works such as aqueducts, harbors, and drainage projects, aimed at improving the water and food supply, were carefully designed to showcase the resources and generosity of the imperial patron. This study traces the origins of these forms of largesse, following their development from the Republican period to the end of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. By examining the water-related monuments and spectacles of each individual Julio-Claudian emperor in the context of their time, this dissertation aims to reconstruct the structures themselves, their intended audiences, and the water policies and patterns of influence created by each Julio-Claudian emperor. The first principes of Rome were still shaping their role and exploring ways in which they could balance their exercise of power with their expected responsibilities to the different strata of Roman society. The early principes began to experiment with water related munificence, and created many new forms of buildings and displays for the public that would eventually become canonical components of Imperial largesse and legitimization.

In 1755 Henrietta Louisa Jeffreys, Countess of Pomfret, donated a substantial collection of Greco-Roman statuary to the University of Oxford. Once part of a larger collection assembled under Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel, the statues had descended to Jeffreys through the family of her husband, Thomas Ferrnor, having been purchased in 1691 for their country seat at Easton Neston in Northamptonshire. Oxford gratefully received this benefaction and it was publicly (and variously) commemorated. Emphasis on 'quality' and reliance on 'authority' have previously obscured the importance of the Pomfret statuary, subsuming it within Arundel's iconic connoisseurship. Interdisciplinary in approach, this dissertation employs new archival evidence to resituate the Pomfret marbles within larger historical and art-historical contexts and (citing contemporary images and texts) re-evaluates the collection's cultural significance. Adopting the approach of Dr. Carol Gibson-Wood, my work augments new scholarship concerned with reassessing the character of the early modern art market and its associated collecting practices. The primary concern in the dissertation is restoring the voice of Henrietta Louisa Jeffreys, whose motives for the benefaction have previously been misrepresented. Her personal response to social and cultural conditions actuated both her obtaining the statues and her dispensing of them. A second concern is to contextualize Oxford's status within the socio-political discourse of early Georgian England in order to demonstrate that the Pomfret collection was genuinely valuable to the Ufiiversity. The collection provided a collective symbol of vertu (which implied commitment to correct moral behaviour and taste) for that embattled academic institution and identified Oxford as a location of national importance. The dissertation's structure is provided with a third consideration which ultimately incorporates the other two - the provenance of the statuary. While proceeding chronologically from Arundel's acquisition through Oxford's reception, the historical details are augmented with analyses of how the collection was promoted and perceived. By revealing how ideals and ideologies of vertu informed the collection, its donation, its publicists, and its audience, this dissertation addresses the wider significance of the Pomfret benefaction in early modern England.

This thesis is an investigation of possible significant parallels of the Roman imperial cult (Caesar-Nero) in the book of Hebrews. The book of Hebrews was no doubt greatly impacted by Jewish influence, context, and background. Yet there may be other significant influences that have formed the New Testament book of Hebrews. One such possible influence to the book of Hebrews is the Roman Empire, and more specifically, the Roman imperial cult, the worship of living Roman emperors in god-like terms and the deification of dead emperors. The writer of Hebrews may have used language, forms, and images of the Roman ruler cult to contrast, compare, or clarify their theology and interpretation of Jesus and God. There is the possibility of correspondences between worship of the Roman emperors and the book of Hebrews. Are there significant parallels of the worship of the Caesars to God in the book of Hebrews? Did the writer of Hebrews use illusions, motifs, and images of the Roman emperor cult in parallel to Jesus Christ? Is the Roman imperial cult influence portrayed in the book of Hebrews? If yes, how and to what degree are they portrayed? If no, what are some of the divergences? This thesis attempts to answer these questions in an investigation for possible parallels of the Roman imperial cult (Caesar-Nero) in the New Testament book of Hebrews. I hypothesize there are significant parallels of the Roman imperial cult (Caesar-Nero) in the book of Hebrews. Through my findings I conclude that parallels with words and images on a broad level do exist, but discovery of significant parallels of direct influence were lacking. The parallels between Hebrews and the Roman imperial cult were more likely due to common sources, cultural settings, or universal ideas. The three strongest parallels of the emperor cult (Caesar-Nero) in the book of Hebrews were: divine sonship, enthronement after death, and benefaction. These parallels in combination with the weaker ones do not constitute significant parallelism. The Roman emperor cult does not appear to be a major influence which produced significant parallel for material contained in the book of Hebrews.
