Purpose The purpose of this paper is to apply the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) to determine which psychosocial factors are predictors of older adults’ safe food storage practices at home. Design/methodology/approach An online structured questionnaire was developed and administered to older adults (60+). Two behavioural intention outcomes were investigated: thawing meats safely and storing leftovers within recommended guidelines. The survey instrument measured socio-demographic and TPB variables: attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and intentions. A measure of self-reported habitual behaviour was also recorded and used to determine whether past practice influenced behavioural intentions. Findings Respondents (n=78) demonstrated good intentions to safely defrost meats and store leftovers. The models accounted for 41 and 48 per cent of the variance in intentions to perform safe storage behaviours. Attitudes and subjective norms were predictors of intentions to safely thaw meats. Habitual behaviour was a significant predictor of behavioural intentions to safely store leftovers. Perceived behavioural control was a significant predictor of intentions to thaw meats and store leftovers. Research limitations/implications The sample size was small, and results are to be interpreted with caution. Practical implications The results indicate that theory-based solutions to solving food safety among consumers may be a feasible strategy. Originality/value The study is the first of its kind to apply the TPB to this consumer group.

The intention-behaviour gap has been a barrier to health behavioural change. A total of 85 participants (aged 18–56 years) were recruited for a study that examined how two types of planning (Action and Coping) could bridge the intention-behaviour gap and increase physical exercise behaviours. The online study took place over two weeks, with participants completing pre- and post- measures of past exercise habits, intentions to exercise, subsequent physical exercise behaviours, intrinsic motivation levels, and engagement in action and coping planning. A hierarchical regression analysis showed that intentions, past exercise habits and action planning were significant predictors of change in physical exercise behaviours. Positive correlations were observed between participants’ past habits and their exercise behaviours during the study. 71.8% of participants met the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended guidelines for physical activity at the end of the study compared to the initial 58.8%, which evidences a significant increase in participant physical exercise behaviours. Our findings revealed that while intentions are important predictors for behavioural change, cultivating habits to engage in regular exercise seems to outweigh the significance of intentions. Moreover, action planning could be a helpful intervention to bridge the intention-behaviour gap to increase overall physical exercise behaviours. In the long-term, this would improve an individual’s mental and physical wellbeing and potentially alleviate the costly burden on public health services.

Abstract Research indicates that the misinterpretation of other’s emotions or intentions may lead to antisocial behaviour. This study investigated emotion and intention recognition in children with behavioural problems and examined their relationship and relations with behaviour problem severity. Participants were 7–11 year old children with behavioural problems (n = 93, mean age: 8.78, 82.8% male) who were taking part in an early intervention program and typically developing controls (n = 44, mean age: 9.82, 79.5% male). Participants completed emotion recognition and Theory of Mind tasks. Teachers and parents rated children’s emotional and behavioural problems. Children with behavioural problems showed impaired emotion and intention recognition. Emotion recognition and intention recognition were positively related and inversely associated with behavioural problem severity and, independently of one another, predicted behavioural problems. This study is the first to show that children with behavioural problems are impaired in identifying others’ emotions as well as intentions. These social cognitive processes were found to be related and inversely associated with severity of behavioural problems. This has important implications for intervention and prevention programmes for children with behavioural difficulties.

(1) Background: Partner violence prevention programmes do not produce the expected behavioural changes. Accordingly, experts suggest applying evidence-based behavioural models to identify the determinants of abusive behaviours. In this research, we applied the reasoned action approach (RAA) to predict the performance (boys) and acceptance (girls) of abusive behaviours in adolescents. (2) Method: We designed a questionnaire based on the RAA and performed a cross-sectional study. We analysed the predictive capacity of the RAA constructs on intentions with the sample of single adolescents (n = 1112). We replicated the analysis only with those who were in a relationship (n = 587) and in addition analysed the predictive capacity of intention on future behaviour (3 months later). (3) Results: The hierarchical regression analysis performed with the sample of single adolescents showed that the model explained 56% and 47% of the variance of boys’ intentions to perform the controlling and devaluing behaviours, respectively; and 62% and 33% of girls’ intention to accept them. With those in a relationship, the model explained 60% and 53% of the variance of boys’ intentions to perform the controlling and devaluating behaviour, respectively, and 70% and 38% of girls’ intention to accept them. Intention exerted direct effects on boys’ performance of controlling and devaluing behaviours (31% and 34% of explained variance, respectively) and on girls’ acceptance (30% and 7%, respectively). (4) Conclusions: The RAA seems useful to identify the motivational determinants of abusive behaviours, regardless of adolescents´ relationship status, and for their prediction. Perceived social norms emerge as a relevant predictor on which to intervene to produce behavioural changes with both sexes.

Intentionality plays a fundamental part in human social interactions and we know that interpretation of behaviours of conspecifics depends on the intentions underlying them. Most of the studies on intention attribution were undertaken with primates. However, very little is known on this topic in animals more distantly related to humans such as birds. Three hand-reared African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) were tested on their ability to understand human intentional actions. The subjects’ attention was not equally distributed across the conditions and their behavioural pattern also changed depending on the condition: the parrots showed more requesting behaviours (opening of the beak and request calls) when the experimenter was unwilling to give them seeds, and bit the wire mesh more that represented the obstacle when the experimenter was trying to give them food. For the first time we showed that a bird species, like primates, may be sensitive to behavioural cues of a human according to his intentions. This paper aims to examine the impact of TripAdvisor reviews on behavioural intentions, basing on travellers' trust towards the e-WOM reviews. Four factors are proposed for building travellers’ trust and behavioural intentions: information quality, credibility, adoption and usefulness. Trust is expected to mediate the relationship between eWOM attributes and travellers’ behavioural intention. Data from 410 travellers were analysed using Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), and the findings show that TripAdvisor e-WOM attributes (information credibility, adoption and usefulness) significantly influence the traveller's trust. Besides, traveller behavioural intention was influenced considerably by TripAdvisor eWOM information credibility and usefulness. Lastly, trust in e-WOM significantly mediates travellers' behavioural intention. This paper confirms the importance of eWOM in the context of the tourism industry and travellers' trust and behaviour towards online review, which altered how consumers behave before deciding to travel.

Background: In recent years, rates of online cancer misinformation have grown, with many concerned that this could lead patients to alter their daily behaviours or forego conventional treatment. However, no published study has investigated whether exposure to cancer misinformation can affect health behaviours or behavioural intentions. Method: In this preregistered study, participants (N = 774) were exposed to cancer misinformation in the form of news stories before rating their intentions to engage in related behaviours. Each participant was randomly presented with two of four possible false cancer headlines such as “Drinking fluoridated water shown to increase cancer risk by a factor of 3”, before rating their intentions to engage in certain behaviours (such as avoiding fluoridated water). Participants were also randomly assigned to either an accuracy-nudge intervention intended to reduce susceptibility to misinformation or a control condition with no intervention. Results: Viewing the fake cancer headlines did not significantly affect participants’ behavioural intentions – e.g., those who saw the headline regarding fluoridated water were not more likely to report intentions to reduce their fluoridated water intake. The accuracy-nudge intervention did not affect behavioural intentions. Conclusion: Although cancer misinformation is considered a threat to public health, we conclude that once-off exposures to cancer misinformation may not be sufficient to significantly alter behavioural intentions. We note that claims about the effects of cancer misinformation on behaviour have not been adequately researched and we therefore call for more research into the behavioural effects of cancer misinformation exposure, particularly repeated exposure or information passed from trusted sources.

With algorithmic recommendations becoming an important way and means of information distribution, social media platforms are developing rapidly, and students in colleges and universities today have become the main audience for their information access. In this paper, through the application of TPB model in the intention to fall in love of young female groups in colleges and universities, four variables, namely attention, attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control, were studied in depth, and a research model of factors influencing the relationship behaviour of young female groups was constructed based on the theoretical model of planned behaviour. According to the results, the factor of attention did not have a significant positive effect on relationship behaviour intentions, and behavioural attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control (PBC) had a significant positive effect on relationship behaviour intentions.

Cloud computing services are a prominent innovation that has changed consumer behaviours towards adopting new technological services. Despite the popularity of this technological innovation the underlying factors that contribute to a consumer's intention to adopt cloud computing services has not been well researched. This paper builds upon the well-known behavioural intention theories of the technology acceptance model and social cognitive theory to develop and test a number of hypotheses designed to understand the factors influencing intention to use cloud computing services. The research hypotheses in the paper propose that perceived usefulness, consumer innovation attitude, social norms, performance expectancy and trust influence behavioural intentions of consumers towards cloud computing services. The hypotheses are tested in a sample of United States and Chinese consumers to understand whether there are differences in behavioural attitudes towards technological innovations. The paper identifies research limitations, practical implications and future research suggestions.

The purpose of this study attempted to explore intentions of frontline employees on language learning in Macau hospitality industry. Without exploring learners’ intention, the successful language learning cannot be achieved. Various factors promote or hinder language learners from the implementation of behaviour, that is learning a language. As Macau is one of famous tourist destinations, diversifying single economic development on gaming industry has been enforced. Acting the platform between China and Lusophony countries has also been initiated. Developing language competence in hospitality industry becomes essential in Macau. Hence, this study is crucial for language teaching and learning contexts in hospitality industry while it is anticipated that more and more international tourists will be received in Macau soon after recovering from COVID-19. In this study, the theory of planed behaviour suggested by Ajzen (1991) [1] was applied to explore language learners’ behavioural intentions in terms of learning either English or Portuguese. After a pilot study, the main study was conducted in November 2019. The research findings showed attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control had positive and significant impacts on language learning intention. Specifically, subjective norm was the most influential factor affecting learners’ behavioural intention, followed by perceived behavioural control and then attitude. Significant others therefore played the key factor on influencing learners to take an action on learning languages in the society of Macau. This finding may result from job requirements in the labour-market. Finally, the study contributes to educational literature by demonstrating the importance of intentions on frontline employees’ language learning by applying the theory of planned behaviour. Practically, based on the aspect of social psychology to scrutinise learners’ behavioural intention, it would allow language educators adopting effective teaching and learning approach to satisfy learners’ needs.

Risk perception has an important influence on tourism decision-making behaviour. Based on the extended Theory of Planned Behaviour, we examine the effect of COVID-19 risk perception on tourists’ behavioural intentions towards forest therapy tourism. A questionnaire survey was conducted during the pandemic. Based on structural equation modelling (SEM), our evidence shows that cognitive risk perception positively and significantly influenced subjective norms, while affective risk perception positively and significantly influenced attitudes. Subjective norms mediated perceived risk perception and behavioural intentions, while attitudes mediated emotional risk perception and behavioural intentions. Gender partially moderated perceived behavioural control and behavioural intentions. Finally, this study proposes corresponding management countermeasures of great practical importance in promoting the development of forest recreation tourism.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of health-care service quality (HCSQ) dimensions on patient satisfaction and behavioural intentions in selected corporate hospitals from South India. Design/methodology/approach Based on Parasuraman et al.’s SERVQUAL variables, the study tried to identify the effects of each variable to patient satisfaction and behavioural intentions. Data were collected through systematic random sampling among 500 in-patients of corporate hospitals with minimum four days stay were considered for the in-patients’ sample. Structural equation modelling technique was used to investigate the effect of HCSQ dimensions on patient satisfaction and behavioural intention. Findings The findings suggest that in addition to “patient satisfaction”, the only HCSQ dimension that directly affects behavioural intention is “empathy”. In addition, “empathy” affects “responsiveness”, “assurance” and “tangibles” which, in turn, have only an indirect effect to behavioural intention through “patient satisfaction”. Research limitations/implications This research investigated the HCSQ dimensions effects on patient satisfaction and behavioural intention from the perspective of patients and corporate hospitals run by the private players. This paper contributes to the body of academic knowledge by shedding more light into the role of HCSQ dimensions, and especially “empathy”, in the intentions for corporate hospital patients. Practical implications An understanding of the direct and indirect effect of HCSQ dimensions on patient satisfaction and behavioural intentions is important to corporate hospital marketing managers because it offers them the opportunity to take certain actions for improving patients’ satisfaction and these actions increase their intention to revisit. Originality/value The paper manages to investigate the effects of HCSQ dimensions on patient satisfaction and behavioural intention, especially in the health-care marketing sector.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine whether a music festival leads to additional intangible benefits such as the appreciation of the specific music genre and music tourism. This was done by using visitors’ behavioural intentions related to these benefits as a tool for market segmentation. Design/methodology/approach The research followed a quantitative approach by conducting a visitor survey at an international jazz festival in South Africa. Findings The results showed that visitors’ post-festival behavioural intentions are a useful market segmentation tool. This approach revealed three distinct market segments with different levels of post-festival behavioural intentions (high, medium, and low). The results further showed that music festivals have the potential to create benefits beyond the festival itself or the host destination in the form of music tourism and the appreciation of a music genre. However, influencing visitors’ behavioural intentions can only be achieved by a thorough understanding of the characteristics of the market. Originality/value This research applied an innovative market segmentation approach that showed the post-festival behavioural intentions of different visitor segments at a music festival. The findings confirm that music festivals can have far-reaching benefits that can contribute to their legacy.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate Pakistani bank front-line employees’ intentions to behave ethically by using the extended theory of planned behaviour (ETPB) into which religiosity (i.e. religious activity, devotion to rituals and belief in doctrine) is integrated as a moderating variable. Design/methodology/approach The authors collected 234 self-administered questionnaires and analysed them using SmartPLS 2.0, a second generation structural equation modelling technique. Findings This paper demonstrates that the ETPB can explain intentions to behave ethically. Moral norms (i.e. the rules of morality that people believe they ought to follow) and perceived behavioural control (i.e. people’s perceptions of their ability to perform a given behaviour) are the best predictors of ethical behavioural intentions. The effects of injunctive norms (i.e. perceptions of which behaviours are typically approved or disapproved in an organisation) and of perceived behavioural control on behavioural intent are moderated by religiosity. Practical implications Leading by example, providing ethics training, empowering employees and encouraging the expression of religiosity are proposed as ways to foster an ethical culture in the workplace. Originality/value Even though numerous empirical studies have utilised variants of the theory of planned behaviour to explain consumer behaviour, its applicability to ethical behaviour in the workplace has scarcely been explored. Moreover, its tests in non-western contexts are scant. This study demonstrates the applicability of the ETPB in a broader circumstantial and cultural context and enriches it with religiosity, a pertinent characteristic of billions of people around the world. Finally, this is one of the very few ethics studies focusing on banking, an industry fraught with allegations of moral breaches.

AbstractCultural influence on the effects of attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control (PBC) on behavioural intentions can vary with types of behaviours. The current study compared American and Korean undergraduates for the effects of each of the Theory of Planned Behaviour components on intentions to sign an organ donor registry and to have family discussion about organ donation. For intentions to sign, results showed that attitudes were a stronger predictor among Americans than Koreans and that PBC was a significant predictor only among Koreans. While attitudes and subjective norms were similarly related to Americans' intentions to sign, subjective norms were more strongly related to Koreans' intentions to sign than attitudes and PBC. For intentions to have family discussion, Americans considered subjective norms to a greater extent than Koreans did. While subjective norms and PBC were more important than attitudes were among Americans, PBC was more important than subjective norms and attitudes among Koreans. Theoretical and practical implications of these and other findings are discussed.

One-quarter of fish consumed in Europe comes from aquaculture and research has shown that consumers have a greater preference for wild fish in comparison with farmed ones. As with other food choices, consumer decisions regarding farmed fish are a complex process involving multiple factors. The main objective of this study is to develop and validate a questionnaire that will measure consumer intentions in the consumption of farmed fish using the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) as a theoretical framework. Based on the TPB model, the study also investigates the relationships between attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and intention to consume farmed fish. Data collection was performed through an online survey and a total of 118 valid questionnaires were analysed. Based on tests performed, results indicate that the tested scale for measuring TPB constructs is valid and reliable. Alpha coefficients for intention, attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control were 0.898, 0.857, 0.748 and 0.953, respectively. Variables in the model explain 40% of the variation in farmed fish consumption intentions. Regression analysis confirmed that attitudes and subjective norms significantly influence intention to consume farmed fish, with the subjective norms being the strongest predictor, while perceived behavioural control does not have a significant impact on behavioural intention.

The present study goal is to identify assorted factors and also to investigate their influence on tourists’ behavioural intentions about their usage patterns with respect to M-wallet payment. A conceptual model has been anticipated and authenticated and 600 questionnaires were distributed and 482 were usable. Structural equation modelling was employed to assess research hypotheses. The result shows that the behavioural intention is significantly influenced by perceived value, trust, compatibility and social influence while tourists’ is less optimistic when it comes to use M-wallet with regard to perceived enjoyment. The study also showed that trust followed by compatibility has a more powerful influence on the behavioural intention of tourists in the context of M-payment. The present study is limited to only six M-wallet and that too limited to the certain age category, namely 18–25 in Gwalior city of India. Understanding the different dimensions of behavioural intentions can help M-wallet players to win the trust of tourists and enhance the frequency to use M-wallet for M-payment. The results indicate that M-wallet service providers should consider and manage all affecting factors proactively as mechanisms for intention to use M-wallet. It will establish a behavioural intention model of M-wallet users that can help organizations to manage the formation of behavioural intentions of their users.

In spite of integrating HIV/AIDS education in South African curricula the prevalence of HIV in 2016 was the highest since 2002. HIV infection rate is particularly high among schoolgirls compared with boys. Using a closed-ended questionnaire, this quantitative survey research compared Biology and non-Biology schoolgirls’ (n=291) behavioural intention, Health Literacy and HIV/AIDS Literacy to determine if enrolling for Biology, and subsequently learning about the scientific nature of HIV/AIDS would reduce risk behaviour among schoolgirls. Results indicate that Biology students have higher Health Literacy and HIV/AIDS Literacy than non-Biology students. The behavioural intentions of both groups were not significantly different. Health Literacy and HIV/AIDS Literacy did not correlate significantly with behavioural intention, which were indicative of risk behaviour. These findings suggest that enrolling for Biology and other science subjects and subsequently learning about HIV/AIDS may not reduce risk behaviour among schoolgirls. Keywords: behavioural intention, biology students, health literacy, HIV/AIDS literacy, South African schoolgirls.

The study explored the critical determinants of behavioral intention and willingness to use smart wearable devices among Indian youth. Data were collected using a survey instrument on the youth aged between 20-30 years (N=262) in India. The results showed, performance expectancy, hedonic motivation, and habits impacted the behavioural intention of the youth. Facilitating conditions impacted the youth’s willingness to use. Behavioural intentions of the youth impacted their willingness to use smart wearable devices. Male youth moderated the effect of performance expectancy on behavioural intentions. Gender and Purpose of-Use moderated the effect of hedonic motivation and habits on behavioural intention and behavioural intention on willingness to use. Only health and fitness moderated the effect of facilitating condition on willingness to use smart wearable devices among youth. Though the study is limited to the Indian context, its implications can benefit the wearable commerce providers in designing, positioning, and marketing the products in developing economies.

Understanding why consumers behave unethically has gained scholarly attention; many studies have examined it from psychological or social environmental perspectives. However, few studies provide the link between internal and external factors associated with unethical behaviours, and few studies explain why consumers ‘behave unethically knowingly’ in a China-specific context. Based on moral disengagement theory, the current research aims to provide a comprehensive developmental model to investigate how group norms and self-interest motivation affect consumers’ unethical behavioural intentions and to analyse the mechanism of ‘behaving unethically knowingly’. Findings from online surveys of 360 participants indicate that group recognition and an egoism motivation have positive effects on consumers’ unethical behavioural intentions, while group veto and an altruistic motivation have negative effects on unethical behavioural intentions; moral disengagement mediates the relationship between group recognition, group veto, egoism motivation, altruistic motivation and unethical behavioural intentions; moral identity negatively moderates the relationship between group recognition, altruistic motivation and unethical behavioural intentions. The theoretical and practical implications are also discussed.

There is large call in Malaysia to study on how tertiary students perceived the performance of service quality of student housing; and to understand on how they translated their perceptions into behavioural intentions and personal attainments. The rationale for this paper is to explain the elements which constitute behavioural intentions and personal attainments; which is based on conventional reviews of plentiful volume of published journals from 1985 until 2014 in the area of student housing research. The results of the review clarified that behavioural intentions consist of favourable and unfavourable intentions; while personal attainments comprise of intellectual and self-development gains. Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) suggests empirical implications to promote students' entrepreneurial intentions. In the course of an empirical study with 208 German students, regression analyses confirm that attitude, social norm, and perceived behavioural control contribute substantially to the prediction of start-up intentions. The use of index based measurements shows that entrepreneurial intention is significantly influenced by all three constructs (R2 = 0.446). As beliefs based on information and experiences are decisive in order to emerge an intention, a promoting approach should start here. Following the TPB, changes at singular points are not sufficient. A discussion of concrete beliefs provides implications for future research as well as for practical interventions.

Objectives: To assess the relationship of baseline behavioural intentions and sexual perceptions with subsequent intentions regarding sexual initiation and condom use in Bahamian preadolescents. Method: Longitudinal data were obtained at baseline and 8 months later from 424 sexually inexperienced Bahamian youth aged 9–12 years, who served as ‘controls’ in a HIV risk-reduction intervention study. Sexual perceptions were measured based on a social cognitive model, protection motivation theory. Results: Baseline intention to have sex was a strong predictor of follow-up intention to engage in sex for boys, but was not a predictor for girls. Baseline condom use intention was not related to subsequent intention to use condoms for either male or female youth. Perceptions of girls, compared with boys, were less endorsing of sexual initiation. Some protection motivation theory constructs regarding sexual perceptions were predictive of subsequent behavioural intentions. Among boys, low perceived self-efficacy to avoid sexual intercourse and positive feelings about having sex predicted their intention to have sex. Among girls, perceived peer sexual behaviour and a limited understanding of the adverse consequences of sexual intercourse were predictors of their subsequent intention to initiate sex. Perceived self-efficacy to use condoms and response efficacy of condom use were significant predictors of condom use intention for both boys and girls. Conclusions: These results suggest that prevention intervention efforts should target predictive perceptions and consider sex differences in sexual perceptions.

Purpose This paper aims to provide a conceptual model that elucidates the role of cognitive absorption in explaining behavioural intentions in virtual health communities. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 361 contributing members of virtual health communities from Gauteng, South Africa, using a structured questionnaire. Structural equation modelling using AMOS software was used to analyse the data. Findings The findings show that cognitive absorption has a significant direct positive influence on content posters’ intentions to continue participating on virtual health community platforms. Cognitive absorption was also found to have an indirect influence on behavioural intentions through its influence on members’ attitude. It was also found to play a mediating role in the influence of perceived usefulness and behavioural intention. Research limitations/implications The study shows the value of linking flow theory and the technology acceptance model to provide a comprehensive understanding of behavioural intentions in virtual health community forums. Practical implications Managers of virtual health communities need to pay attention to experiential aspects of their sites. Success in ensuring that community members are cognitively absorbed is key to the development of positive attitude and intentions towards virtual health community forums. Originality/value Virtual health communities play a new and growing role in the way health-related information and support is offered and accessed by those in need. Despite their importance, not much research has been done to explain the role of consumer experience in member behavioural intentions on such forums. The study contributes to this understanding by demonstrating the value of cognitive absorption in directly explaining users’ attitude and behavioural intentions. The study also sheds light on the role played by cognitive absorption in explaining the influence of perceived usefulness on behavioural intentions.

This study aimed to examine the effect of the flow experience of global coffee shop consumers on the intention to recommend and revisit and the effect of satisfaction on the intention to recommend and revisit. It also aimed to determine whether satisfaction mediates the relationship between flow experience and intention to recommend and revisit. Data were obtained through an online questionnaire by young consumers in Türkiye, an emerging market. Simple linear regression and mediation analysis were applied to test the hypotheses. The major findings indicated that both flow experience and satisfaction significantly affected these behavioural intentions. Moreover, the findings empirically confirmed and theoretically proved that satisfaction was important due to its direct effect on behavioural intention and its indirect effect on how flow experience affects behavioural intention as a mediator. This study is expected to provide significant evidence that expands the knowledge of consumer behaviour by identifying and explaining the relationship between flow experience and behavioural intention.

Malaysia is one of the countries which face serious outflow of high skilled workers. In particular, high levels of brain drain among the engineers in the country has created a critical shortage of highly skilled workers in Malaysia. Migration studies in Malaysia in the past mostly focused on economic and socio-political aspects but migration among engineers received very little attention. The main purpose of this study is to analyse the intention of Malaysian engineers to migrate abroad from a behavioural perspective. The study also intended to identify the engineers salient beliefs about migration that could explain their intentions. The knowledge regarding the beliefs can be useful for policy makers in order to develop behavioural intervention policies to manipulate (i.e. lower) the engineers intention to move abroad. The engineers intention was analysed using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). Among the three direct predictors in TPB model, the engineers attitude and their subjective norms were significant in explaining the engineers intentions to move abroad. In turn, a number of salient behavioural and normative beliefs were found to be significant in explaining the engineers attitude and subjective norms.

Residents’ trust in the managing agency has been heralded as a necessary precursor to success in preventing wildland fire losses in the wildland–urban interface. Trust, however, is a complex concept. Homeowners’ specific fire wise actions may not be easily linked to general measures of trust. This article uses two distinct trust indices to predict residents’ intention to do fire wise actions to their house and adjacent site. Results of structural equation models using a survey of Colorado Front Range residents (n = 456) revealed strong explanatory power: 85% (house behaviours) and 72% (site behaviours) of the variation in intentions were accounted for by trust, previous fire wise behaviours and the perceived effectiveness of the actions. The trust measures, however, were not major influences. ‘Trust in agency competence’ weakly predicted perceived effectiveness for site behaviours; ‘trust in agency information’ weakly predicted past house behaviours. Neither trust variable directly affected intentions to perform these actions. We conclude that trust is best viewed as a broad precursor whose influence on behavioural intentions is mediated by other constructs (e.g. past behaviour, perceived effectiveness). The implications for further work to understand the role of trust and the possible social mechanisms involved are discussed.

Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots are set to be the defining technology of the next decade due to their ability to increase human capability at a low cost. However, more research is required to assess individuals’ behavioural intentions to use this technology when it becomes publicly available. This study applied an extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), with additional predictors of trust and privacy concerns, to assess individuals’ behavioural intentions to use AI chatbots across three industries: mental health care, online shopping, and online banking. These services were selected due to the current popularity of regular chatbots in these fields. Participants ( N = 360 , 202 females) aged between 17 and 85 years ( M = 38.17 , SD = 17.66 ) completed a 71-item online, cross-sectional survey. As hypothesised, perceived usefulness and trust were significant positive predictors of behavioural intentions across all three behaviours. However, the influence of the perceived ease of use and privacy concerns on behavioural intentions differed across the three behaviours. These findings highlight that the combination of predictors within the extended TAM have different influences on behavioural intentions to use AI chatbots for mental health care, online shopping, and online banking. This research contributes to the literature by demonstrating that the influence of the variables in one field cannot be generalised across all uses of AI chatbots.

Objective – The increasing growth of the Thai tourism market has resulted in international tourists flooding into Thailand and providing significant economic benefits for the country’s tourism development. The purpose of this research is to examine a comprehensive model for Thai tourism. This study aims to investigate how tourists’ trust can enhance their behaviour intentions in travelling to Thailand through perceived authenticity. Methodology/Technique – The research tests a model linking trust to authenticity, and behaviour intention to current Thai tourism. Using a convenience sampling method, a sample of 453 international Asian tourists who travelled to Thailand were surveyed. Findings – The findings show that different levels of trust directly influence tourists’ behavioural intentions, trust influences perceived authenticity, perceived authenticity further affects behaviour intention, and perceived authenticity mediates the relationship between tourists’ trust and their behavioural intention. Moreover, demographic factors moderate the effects of trust on tourists’ perceived authenticity. Novelty – The present research is expected to clarify the potential research topics in the field of Thai tourism development. Purpose Based on the theory of planned behaviour and the resource-based perspective, the purpose of this paper is to provide a well-supported explanation of how access to resources, defined as those controlled by the family context and not necessarily controlled by the student, changes attitudes, subjective norms and perceived control and, consequently, the entrepreneurial intentions of secondary students. Design/methodology/approach In contrast to traditional research methodologies, this study used a different approach based on primary survey data collected from secondary students to study future entrepreneurial intentions. Structural equation models were used in the empirical analysis. Findings Secondary students with more access to resources – financial and human capital – have stronger entrepreneurial intentions because they have more favourable attitudes and subjective norms, and greater perceived behavioural control. This study finds that cultural capital has no significant impact on entrepreneurial intention. Practical implications Key policy actions should increase access to resources for young people. Originality/value This study shows that the effect of access to resources on entrepreneurial intention is mediated by attitudes, social norms and perceived behavioural control. The results suggest that the relationship between access to resources and entrepreneurial intentions is more complex and nuanced than previously thought.

Abstract Introduction. This study aims to examine the structural relationships between value, satisfaction, and behavioural intentions among adventure sports trainees through Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The constructs of service value and satisfaction have been examined as antecedents of behavioural intentions. Material and methods. The conceptual model was tested with primary data which were collected - through multistage sampling - from 230 participants of adventure sports training in Himachal Pradesh, India using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). Results. Functional value, emotional value, and novelty value were found to significantly influence satisfaction, as hypothesised, while social value and value for money had an insignificant influence on the satisfaction of adventure trainees. Satisfaction was shown to have a significant influence on the intention to revisit, the search for alternatives, and word-of-mouth referral as behavioural intentions of adventure trainees. Conclusions. This study has confirmed the significant positive influence of functional value, emotional value, and novelty value on adventure trainees’ satisfaction. Satisfaction has a direct positive influence on the intention to revisit and word-of-mouth referrals, while it has a negative influence on the search for alternatives. Satisfaction has been found to have a partial mediation effect on the relationships between the five dimensions of service value and behavioural intentions.

The growing environmental concerns and the significant energy consumption in hotel buildings make the ability to proactively manage energy and lower carbon intensity essential in the global hospitality industry. Activating guests’ energy-conservation behaviours is a potential strategy for sustainable hotel operation and maintenance. Yet, the psychological mechanism of hotel building energy-conservation intention and the roles of personality traits have not been sufficiently investigated. This study aims to examine the role of guests’ extraversion levels in their hotel building energy-conservation behavioural intention using a modified theory of planned behaviour (TPB) model. The study extends the TPB model with personal norms and past behaviour as two additional factors and employs past behaviour as a moderator to bridge extraversion and other psychological factors. A field experiment was conducted consisting of 530 hotel guests in Shanghai, China. The results demonstrate the relationships between attitude, behavioural control, personal norms, past behaviour and energy-conservation intention. Specifically, extraversion negatively influences perceived behavioural control (PBC) (β = −0.176, p < 0.001) and positively impacts on personal norms (β = 0.290, p < 0.001), both of which significantly contribute to guest energy-saving intention. In addition, past behaviours positively moderate the effects of extraversion on subjective norms and personal norms. This research enriches the hospitality and tourism management literature by shedding novel light on how guests’ personality characteristics influence their pro-environment intentions during their stays in hotel buildings. The findings would drive the hotel building energy management forward through actionable and effective energy-conservation interventions and enhanced guest satisfaction.

The study referred to the theory of planned behaviour in determining how the selected factors (innovativeness, proactive personality, need of achievement, internal locus of control, risk-taking propensity, lifestyle integration, social networking, resource and opportunity recognition, attitude towards entrepreneurship, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control) influenced the entrepreneurial intentions and pre-start-up behaviour among the Asnaf millennials in Malaysia. This study collected cross-sectional survey data, which are quantitative data from 310 randomly selected Asnaf millennials from Kelantan, Malaysia using structured interviews. This study used Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling PLS-SEM to analyse the data. The result confirmed the indirect influence (entrepreneurial intention) of attitude towards entrepreneurship, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control on the pre-start-up behaviour. Findings revealed that all antecedents have a positive and statistically significant effect on attitude towards entrepreneurship, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control, with an exception to risk-taking propensity. Hence, it is suggested that development programs and policies should enhance the innovativeness and opportunity recognition competency, provide access to working capital, and build a platform to promote entrepreneurial networking in increasing entrepreneurial intention among the low-income Asnaf millennials in Malaysia.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate how gamification can influence entrepreneurial intentions (EI) of a group of users of an online platform provided by a private company. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative research strategy was used with a sample of 220 respondents. These respondents were tested before and after the gamification experience. Findings Main findings support literature suggesting a clear effect of attitudes towards behaviour and perceived behavioural control on EI, in line with the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Once the basic assumptions of TPB were confirmed, the authors tested the effects of gamification comparing before and after results. Main findings highlight an increase of these effects after the gamification experience, aligned with the self-determination theory. Practical implications These findings suggest that gamification is able to influence entrepreneurial behaviours. This contributes to both companies and educators’ knowledge on training for EI with gamification and the use of online platforms to this effect. Recommendations are provided. Abstract The use of reclaimed and recycled building materials is considered a pro-environmental behaviour and studying the factors that influence this is a first step towards establishing such behaviour. It is therefore essential to understand how pro-environmental behaviours develop. This article investigates the relationships between the influential factors on behaviours that help reduce waste in the construction industry, focussing on New Zealand architects. The study utilizes an online questionnaire based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), which is made up of attitude, subjective norm, intention, and perceived behavioural control. The study reveals that the attitudes, intentions and perceived behavioural control of architects are strong predictors of pro-environmental behaviour while the subjective norm is a weak predictor. Knowledge of architects about regulations and certificates related to recycled materials will influence the pro-environmental practices. One of the obstacles in this way is the attitude of people and architects can play an important role in changing it. These findings show that architects need to be informed about related regulations and educated about different ways of integrating these materials.

The COVID-19 outbreak has miserably disrupted the tourism industry and the travelling life style of people. Since the outbreak is still ongoing, it is presumed that the intention and behaviour of people towards travelling will change. Thus, in this context, the study employs empirical research to examine the travel intentions of travellers during the COVID-19 pandemic and identifies the behavioural changes that travellers may have experienced while visiting any destination during the pandemic. For this purpose, primary data was collected from 121 travellers randomly and analyzed using descriptive statistics, regression analysis, independent sample t-tests, and ANOVA, The result indicates that the travel intentions of the respondents are influenced by perceived behavioural control. It is also revealed that the respondents will only choose such destinations that have taken all the precautionary measures. The study concludes that the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly influenced the travel behaviour of travellers.

Background: The theory of planned behaviour (TPB) explanation of smoking cessation intentions consists of gender differences. The purpose of this study is to adopt the extended TPB to discuss factors influencing the smoking cessation intentions of young adult volunteer soldiers and to further compare the respective factors for both genders. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Data were collected from 139 and 165 male and female volunteer soldiers who smoked, respectively. Research participants completed a self-administered questionnaire that comprised items pertaining to the participants’ demographic characteristics, smoking behaviours, smoking cessation experiences, social environments, and TPB variables. Results: Subjective norms (friends) are a positive key factor for young adult male (β = 0.033, p = 0.012) and female (β = 0.076, p < 0.001) volunteer soldiers’ smoking cessation intentions, and perceived behavioural control is a key factor for male young (β = 0.226, p = 0.040) adult volunteer soldiers’ smoking cessation intention. The extended TPB accounted for 27.9% and 53.2% of the variance in the intention to quit smoking in the male and female volunteer soldiers, respectively. Conclusions: We suggest that smoking cessation strategies can reinforce gender-specific intervention strategies to assist young adult volunteer soldiers in smoking cessation.

Objectives: One criticism of the extended parallel process model (EPPM) is its lack of focus on the role of emotion and its relation to behaviour change. Another criticism of the EPPM is regarding its proposition that threat and efficacy have a moderating effect on recipients’ attitudes and behaviours. This study aimed to examine emotions and the interaction effects of threat and efficacy to understand their effects on attitudes and behavioural intentions towards colorectal cancer prevention. Methods: The study adopted a pretest–posttest experimental design to collect data from a sample of college students. There were 631 participating students, but the total number of eligible subjects in this study was 402 students. Findings: Analysis shows that (1) anxiety plays a significant role in the reception of fear-appeal messages because it not only directly influences behavioural intentions but is also a full mediator in allowing perceived threat to affect intentions; (2) emotions influence subjects’ behavioural intentions but not their attitudes; and (3) perceived threat is more effective in changing subjects’ attitudes, while perceived efficacy is more influential in changing behavioural intentions. Conclusion: This study found that it was anxiety rather than fear that made a positive contribution to the effectiveness of fear-appeal messages. These findings showed that the high-threat/high-efficacy group achieved the best persuasive outcomes, followed by the high-threat/low-efficacy and the low-threat/high-efficacy group. The low-threat/low-efficacy group obtained the least persuasive results, which supports the additive model of the EPPM.

Previous studies have examined consumer attitudes toward online services, while few studies have explored factors affecting the behavioural intention of online food delivery services. The purpose of this study is to explore factors that affect the adoption of online food delivery services of Indian millennials by examining the structural relationship between hedonic motivation, utilitarian motivation, price-saving orientation, time-saving orientation, attitude, and behavioural intentions using the theory of planned behaviour. Data from 328 Indian millennials were collected for the study by a self-administered and structured questionnaire. The proposed model was investigated empirically using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) for the validation of scale and then using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structured equation modeling (SEM). The study's results showed that only the relationship of time-saving orientation with the attitude towards was proven insignificant, while others were significant.

PurposeThis study uses conceptualizations and models of service quality and behavioural intentions from the service marketing and audit quality literature to investigate the influence of supervisory board members’ perceptions about various dimensions of audit quality on their behavioural intentions. These dimensions pertain to auditor’s technical competence, functional (service) quality and auditor independence.Design/methodology/approachA survey of supervisory board members of large and medium companies in The Netherlands is made to identify audit quality dimensions. The multivariate analysis is used to identify the quality dimensions influencing supervisory board members’ behavioural intentions.FindingsOverall, the author’s results indicate that the quality dimensions identified in this study have significant influence mainly in the supervisory board members’ intention to refer their auditors to an acquaintance. In this regard, the salient determinants are the functional quality dimensions and auditor independence. The technical quality dimensions are not found to be crucial. In contrast, most of the quality dimensions are not significant determinants of supervisory board members’ intention to retain or recommend the purchase of non-audit services from the auditor albeit having a minor influence. The results have some implications for regulators and audit firms.Research limitations/implicationsThe author’s results are limited by the low response rate that did not allow us to conduct factor analysis on all the functional and technical variables at the same time.Originality/valueThis paper is the first to integrate service quality and behavioural intentions concepts from the marketing literature and auditing literature and apply it in a corporate governance setting.

This study integrated the theory of planned behaviour (TPB), the norm activation model (NAM), and the stimulus–organism–behaviour–consequences theory (SOBC) to determine how external (subjective injunctive norm, subjective descriptive norm, and perceived behavioural control) and internal stimuli (ascription of responsibility, awareness of consequences) stimulate organisms (attitude towards energy saving and personal norms), which in turn drives behavioural responses (energy-saving intentions and behaviours) and their consequences (energy-saving habits). A sample of 1514 residents of five large cities in Vietnam and a multiple linear regression analysis were used to test the hypothesised model. The results show that external stimuli positively shaped a favourable energy-saving attitude, while internal stimuli aroused individuals’ personal norms. In addition, energy-saving intention, behaviours, and habits were serial mediators impacted by both internal and external stimuli. The results also indicate that a long-term orientation positively moderated the relationship between energy-saving intention, behaviours, and habits, but collectivism only moderated the nexus between energy-saving behaviours and habits. These findings imply that policymakers should focus on conveying information related to energy conservation among surrounding people, increasing citizens’ awareness of the consequences, personal responsibilities, moral obligations regarding saving energy, and should not neglect the informative role of cultural values in energy conservation practices.

Objective Identify and describe attitudes and intentions towards personal concussion risk and protective behaviours among varsity athletes. Determine subgroups of athletes characterized by problematic intentions towards concussion prevention and management behaviours. Design Cross-sectional survey. Main outcome measures Varsity athletes ( N = 175; 60% male; 55.4% contact athletes; 56.6% history of concussion) completed a survey examining attitudes and intentions towards personal risk and concussion-management behaviours. Cluster and discriminant analyses were used to identify athlete risk response subgroups on intention items. The clusters were examined for differences in attitudes towards concussion prevention behaviours, demographics and concussion exposure. Results A substantially problematic subgroup of athletes (28% of the sample) reported low intent to engage in post concussion management practices or primary prevention behaviours. These individuals reported high concussion-risk acceptance and very low belief in the efficacy of concussion-management behaviours. They were also more likely to have sustained a concussion. Two other clusters demonstrated more acceptable behavioural intentions towards concussion prevention and management, with one holding model attitudes and intentions. Conclusions Varsity athletes exhibit one of three different patterns of intentions and attitudes towards concussion prevention and management behaviours. Athletes in one of these groups are at much greater risk of concussion injury and poorly follow recommended treatments. Intervention programmes need to target and aim to change these problematic intentions and attitudes to improve the effectiveness of concussion prevention and injury management.

Tackling over-consumption of resources and associated emissions at the lifestyle level will be crucial to climate change mitigation. Understanding the public acceptability of policy aimed at behaviour change in this domain will help to focus strategy towards effective and targeted solutions. Across two studies (n = 259, 300) we consider how policy approaches at different levels of governance (individual, community, and national) might be influenced by the inducement of hypocrisy and the activation of social norms. We also examine the influence of these experimental manipulations upon behavioural intention to reduce consumption (e.g., repair not replace, avoiding luxuries). Dynamic social norm framing was unsuccessful in producing an effect on policy acceptance or intentions to reduce consumption. Information provision about the impact of individual consumption on global climate change increased support for radical policies at the national level (banning environmentally harmful consumption practices) and the community level (working fewer hours, sharing material products, collaborative food cultivation), yet the inducement of hypocrisy had no additional effect. This is in contrast to individual-level behavioural intentions, where the inducement of hypocrisy decreased intentions to engage in high-consumption behaviour. This paper concludes with implications for low-consumption governance.

Purpose Culture plays a vital role in shaping individuals’ intentions and behaviour. Influence of cultural values on entrepreneurship has been acknowledged widely by academics and practitioners. However, little in terms of empirical results is known. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of cultural values on entrepreneurial intentions (EI) of Pakistani students. Design/methodology/approach Cultural values of individualism and collectivism were incorporated into the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Smart-PLS software was used to run a structural equation modelling (SEM) technique to analyse the data. Findings SEM results showed that attitudes towards entrepreneurship and perceived behavioural controls (PBC) mediated the relationship between individualism and EI while subjective norms (SN) mediated the relationship between collectivism and EI. Originality/value The study confirms the applicability of the TPB for understanding the EI in a collectivist culture. Additionally, findings of this study displayed that external factors, such as cultural values, can impact EI through SN, attitude and PBC. Incorporation of cultural values in TPB contributed to the understating of antecedents of EI.
