This paper aims to find out the role of Bangladeshi ports in South Asia for developing integrated intermodal freight transportation system to mitigate the demand of port transport in the region through container from port to inland container depot or dry port or inland container terminal even from/to shipper/consignee premises. The strategic location of Bangladeshi ports in the Bay of Bengal are lucrative for the international traders, investors and others to invest in the port industry as well as manufacturing industry to develop international trade in South Asia especially in India, Nepal , Bhutan and Bangladesh . In addition, Bangladesh has opportunity to serve Myanmar through coastal shipping and road haulage of containers. In here, port rivalry among the ports of Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka is described to focus the importance of Bangladeshi ports also to get the real scenario of port facilities in South Asia. At the end of the paper, deep port initiative is attributed to connect with the One Belt, One Road (OBOR) initiative of China. Finally, in the view of intermodal freight transportation and port competition in the regions, future directions are stated for Bangladeshi ports to compete with others in the South Asian region.

Research aims: The primary aim of this study is to examine the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic during and after this pandemic on manufacturing sectors in Bangladesh. In the context mentioned above, some issues are then taken as the specific objectives.Design/Methodology/Approach: The study was conducted on the manufacturing sectors listed under Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). The study's target population was 42 manufacturing companies out of 153 listed on Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). Four research variables were used to evaluate sample companies' financial performance and financial position. Documentary analysis, descriptive analysis, data normality test, and Wilcoxon Signed–Rank Test were employed to evaluate the hypotheses. The years of annual reports, 2018-2019 to 2020-2021, were utilized for the documentary analysis of sample companies' financial performance and financial position.Research findings: The study's conclusions demonstrated that this pandemic significantly impacted Bangladeshi companies' financial performance (essentially ROA and ROE) at a 5% significance level compared to before the pandemic. In addition, the recovery growth rate of financial performance of sample companies increased optimistically, and the growth of liquidity position of manufacturing companies was also seen in an advantageous position after the COVID-19 pandemic compared to during the COVID-19 pandemic based on Wilcoxon statistical test tool.Theoretical contribution/Originality: The findings of this study can be used as a source of relevant data by investors or future investors for their investment decisions shortly. The findings of this study will also assist the government in determining or preparing the appropriate tax incentive scheme for the impacted industries and whether the correct sector would profit from the tax incentive scheme.Practitioner/Policy implication: Considering that the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the import process of raw materials for production from China in specific and from other countries generally, the study advised the government of Bangladesh to boost its logistic and financial support for the local facility of raw materials.Research limitation/Implication: More extensive research is projected to be conducted on the recovery growth rate of financial performance in Bangladesh's sub-sector manufacturing industries.

This paper detects the existence of Earnings Management (EM) practice in Bangladesh. Total 105 manufacturing companies have been chosen from the different industrial sectors such as pharmaceuticals & chemicals, food & allied, cement, engineering, ceramics, tannery, textile & clothing, paper & printing, jute, fuel & power and miscellaneous. The well-known Beneish M score model has been used in detecting EM. The outcome shows that the percentage of non- manipulator companies is greater than manipulator companies except cement, paper & printing and jute industry. All out 39 % of manufacturing companies are likely manipulator where industry-wise pharmaceuticals & chemicals 28 % , food & allied 42%, cement 80%, engineering 42% , ceramics 0% , tannery 33% , textile & clothing 40 % , paper & printing 100%, jute 100% , fuel & power 25 % and miscellaneous 17% of manufacturing organizations are likely to be manipulator for 2017. This paper may help the stakeholder for distinguishing between likely and non-likely manipulator companies from the different industrial sectors, making a better decision and formulating policy to reduce the likelihood of manipulation. As Beneish Model is a probabilistic model, it is not unquestionably decisive from the identification that organizations are likely manipulators.

The knowledge related to available high-quality sand deposits, Si manufacturing process and different challenging issues in manufacturing is essential for developing the silicon industry in Bangladesh, which is addressed in this article. For high-tech applications, the primary element silica needs to be 98% pure, at least. A case study in Bangladesh shows that Bipinganj sand, with the high quartz percentages, low moisture content, is suitable for the industrial-grade silicon production. No trace of Boron content has been found in the sand of Shameshwari river near Bipinganj locality. Some other potential sand deposits in Bangladesh which contain a high amount of silica are Balijuri of Sherpur district, Moulvibazar, Dakshin zangal of Hathhazari Upazila in Chittagong district, Chauddagram of Comilla district and Shajibazar of Habiganj district etc. Metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si) is the precursor for the solar grade (SoG) and electronic-grade silicon. In photovoltaic and electronic applications, an electric arc furnace is used for the growth of MGS. Some parameters, such as furnace temperature and heat loss, need to be considered for good quality material production. MG-Si can be produced through both carbon reduction and magnesium reduction processes. Mg reduction is comparatively expensive. Silicon production from waste glasses can be a potential technology for MG-Si production in respective to Bangladesh.

While bringing into attention the creative skills of a local Idol maker, this paper aims at exploring Idol making in the light of the maker’s perception and simultaneously placing it within the broader social and cultural context of Bangladesh. It seeks to understand the meaning that idol-making carries to its creator, and the meaning of idol-making that is felt within the larger social context of Bangladesh. While doing so, this paper investigates the concept of art prevailing in contemporary Bangladeshi society and therefore, examines the creative dimensions of idol making from folkloristic and material culture perspectives. Along with bringing forth the unheard stories of a local Bangladeshi idol maker, this paper aims at dismantling the grand narratives of art that existed within Bengali society and therefore, provides an opportunity to reconceptualize the artistic dimension of local idol making in Bangladesh.

In the fiercely competitive market, productivity improvement always plays a key strategic role in determining bottom-line success for an industry. Being a plastic bag manufacturer, which is widely used as packaging material for apparel industry, the manufacturer belongs to a group of backward linkage industry, which is highly competitive. As such, the company has to focus heavily on three strategic issues: reduction in overall cost, improvement in quality with right assurance scheme, and improvement in productivity with right tools and techniques. This research has been conducted in a large FDI-based plastic bag manufacturing company, a techno-economic consortium of Dutch, China and Bangladesh, and located in the suburban area of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. This research was aimed to focus on these issues along with future guidelines as to how to approach lean manufacturing as a pursuit to achieve the ultimate goal of “near perfection”. All of these improvement efforts are planned around the concepts of lean manufacturing. This involves application of Value-Stream Mapping (VSM) and 5S program.

Apparel industry plays an important role in the economic and social development of Bangladesh. This is now a multi-billion dollar manufacturing and export industry in Bangladesh. Its contribution to the foreign exchange earnings, poverty alleviation through creating employment opportunities and empowerment of women is remarkable. However, global competition and unstable market conditions prompted manufacturers to review their traditional manufacturing strategy. In today’s competitive business world, manufacturers are using Lean Manufacturing (LM) technique in order to improve performance and competitiveness. Lean Manufacturing (LM) is a holistic and sustainable approach of manufacturing system used for creating value for customers through eliminating waste in the manufacturing processes. This conceptual paper addresses the concept of lean manufacturing, its benefits and the challenges of implementing lean manufacturing.

Historically, manufacturing of Readymade Garment (RMG) had not been static in a particular country or region. On account of manufacturing cost, very specifically on wage hike issue, RMG manufacturing process has been shifted from developed countries like USA and UK to the least developed one like Bangladesh via Japan and Asian 4 Tigers’ economic region as water always flows downtrend. Traditionally, due to light nature/process of work, females and even some cases adolescent girls, are heavily employed in the sector. The various studies reveal that around 80 percent of total workforces in Bangladesh’s RMG sector is female i.e. 3.7 ml females of total 4.6 ml are directly employed in Bangladesh RMG sector. Though a huge number of females are employment yet, they have to struggle to meet their basic needs, where affordability of sanitary napkin is a far-reaching dream to them. The workers suffer from various diseases and the industry losses productivity due to absenteeism, migration, and on account of unhygienic menstrual management. Availability of low-cost sanitary napkin can ensure good health of the workforce, reduce migration and increase productivity. It’s a win-win situation for the workers and employers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine two interventions toward women’s empowerment in Bangladesh – formal employment and microfinance, and to highlight two case studies supporting these interventions. Design/methodology/approach This interpretive-evaluative inquiry of the state of employment and microfinance as important interventions in women’s empowerment in Bangladesh is based on both primary and secondary sources. Theoretical insights and empirical evidence from previous research along with data from various sources inform the arguments. Findings Bangladeshi women are making steady progress toward empowerment through a gradual increase in female participation in the workforce, especially in the ready-made garment manufacturing sector. The expanding microfinance arena has also been providing a growing number of women the opportunity to undertake productive small-scale business ventures that also provide informal employment to unemployed women in rural areas. However, social and cultural constraints and overt conservatism has been a daunting challenge for enterprising women and those in formal employment continue to suffer from discrimination, harassment and unfavorable working conditions. Originality/value The paper will be of value to both researchers and policy makers in Bangladesh as it seeks to relate two specific interventions toward women’s empowerment from a broad conceptual perspective and interpretive analysis.

Bangladesh is the second-largest garments and textile exporting country in the world and has more than 80 percent of its total export earnings from this sector. Despite it playing a significant role in policymaking in developing countries like Bangladesh, there is a gap in study regarding the effect of participation and position of garments and textile industry in the global value chain (GVC). This paper empirically analyses the participation and position of Bangladesh’s garments and textile industry in the context of the GVC by using the multiregional Input-Output table EORA Global MIRO. We found that this country has a comparative edge in terms of low-cost production and specialization and makes a significant contribution to the global garments industry, but it has not been able to fully integrate into the global production network. We also found that Bangladesh's garments and textile industry have higher backward participation than forwarding participation and occupy a downstream position in GVC. However, the downstream phases contribute to a large percentage of this country's trade. The findings of the study suggest that enhancing the GVC participation of Bangladesh’s garments and textile industry may have a substantial positive impact on the local industry. To boost the capability, there must be local requirements, such as adequate backward linkage for the manufacturing process, research and development for innovation, fewer regulatory restrictions, a mature money market in international operation, and a favorable environment for foreign investors.

Bangladesh has achieved the prestigious second place among the biggest textile exporters countries. The paper's main objective was to explore the relationship between value addition from ready-made garments with export and import from that sector. The study further focused on the influence of previous exports, imports, and value addition on the current value addition. The study was based on three time series variables, namely export, import, and value addition from ready-made garments of Bangladesh, using data from the Bangladesh Central Bank (Bangladesh Bank) for the years 1994 to 2020. The time series variables exhibited the unit root problem and were converted to stationary after the first difference, checked by Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) Test. The multiple linear regression model illustrated, on the one hand, a highly significant and positive relationship between value addition and export, on the other hand, a highly significant and negative relationship between value addition and import for the ready-made garments in Bangladesh. Moreover, the paper used the Vector Autoregression (VAR) model to explore the influences of lag values of those three variables on value addition. The results suggested that causation among the variables was significant in the short run, but insignificant in the long run. In conclusion, Bangladesh's ready-made garment industry plays an important role in the economy, and it is prudent to expand manufacturing with more value addition in the future.

Banana (Musa paradisiaca) is one of the most important gigantic and oldest cultivated fruit crops grown almost everywhere in Bangladesh. Presently, the banana pseudostem is hazardous waste in Bangladesh whilst it has been used in several countries to develop important bio-products such as fibre to make yarn, fabric, apparel as well as fertilizer, fish feed, bio-chemicals, paper, handicrafts, pickles, candy, etc. Looking at this perspective, entrepreneurs of Bangladesh should take this golden opportunity and do the needful for such kind of business. The land of our country is suitable for banana production. Its fruit is a healthy diet and demandable in local markets as well as the free waste could be utilized to produce such bio-products which will contribute directly in our national economy. Thus, farmers or entrepreneurs should cultivate more banana trees in unproductive lands of coastal and hilly areas for extra income from the useless wastes and ensure eco-friendly environment. Women can also be employed in production of different bio-products from banana wastes and thus, they can contribute to their livelihood improvement. In conclusion, this review on banana waste utilization will be of help to the farmers, entrepreneurs, planners, scientists as well as Bangladesh government to take proper initiatives in socioeconomic improvement of Bangladesh. Ethiopia, India and Bangladesh are raising economic power, but have not yet integrated very much with the global economy and still have not achieved their potential in context of technology, globalization, and international competitiveness like developed countries. These countries have much strength, but at the same time , are facing many challenges in the increasingly competitive and fast changing global economy. The main key strengths of these courtiers are their large domestic market, young and growing population, a strong private sector with experience in market institutions, and a well developed legal and financial system. In today’s environment of global competition, technological development and innovation; companies, especially manufacturing, are forced to reconfigure their manufacturing and management processes. Industry 4.0 and intelligent manufacturing are part of a transformation, in which manufacturing and information technologies have been integrated to create innovative systems of manufacturing, management and ways of doing business. This system allows optimizing manufacturing, to achieve greater flexibility, efficient production processes and generate a value added proposal for their customers, as well as to provide a timely response to their market needs. The objective of this work is to explore the Industry 4.0, smart manufacturing, environment requirement and relation of innovation in perspective of developing countries.

Rapid growth in technologies and competitive business environments have brought significant changes in management accounting practices in the manufacturing industries. To cope with these changes a good number of management accounting tools have been developed in helping managerial decisions both at operating and strategic levels. Researchers have identified that the implementation of such tools in developed countries brought success in decision making though research in this particular area in less developed countries, especially in Bangladesh, is not significant yet. Thus, this research aimed to explain the changes that have taken place and the factors behind the changes in management accounting practices (MAP) in manufacturing industries. The listed manufacturing companies in Bangladesh consist of the population and sample of the study. Factor reduction techniques were used to analyze the influencing variables behind the changes in MAP. The paper reveals that the changes that have taken place from 2001 to 2010 period in MAP are mainly in the operational areas while after 2011 the changes in MAP have mostly taken place in the area of strategic decision making. The factors behind the changes are categorized under the heads of Changes in Business and Organization Strategy and Changes in Manufacturing and Information Technology by applying factor analysis. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the principal determinants of women’s employment in the manufacturing sector of Bangladesh using a firm-level panel data from the World Bank’s “Enterprise Survey” for the years 2007, 2011 and 2013. The paper sheds light on the demand-side factors, mainly firm-level characteristics, which also influence this decision. Design/methodology/approach – The authors estimate a fractional logit model to model a dependent variable that is limited by zero from below and one from above. Findings – The results indicate that firm size, whether medium or large, and firms’ export-oriented activities, have an important impact on women’s employment in the manufacturing sector in Bangladesh. Moreover, the authors find that women are significantly more likely to work in unskilled-labour-intensive industries within the manufacturing sector. Research limitations/implications – The research is limited to Bangladesh; however, much of the evidence presented here has implications that are relevant to policymakers in other developing countries. Practical implications – The study identifies factors that affect female employment, that is, where the main constraints to increase female labour force participation. The study focuses on the demand-side factors, which has been somewhat neglected in recent years. As such, it has practical policy implications. Social implications – Focusing on female employment in Bangladesh also sheds light on the nexus between labour market opportunities and social change within a country that is characterised by extreme patriarchy, which has wide-reaching implications. Originality/value – This is an original and comprehensive paper by the authors.

The ready-made garments (RMG) sector of Bangladesh has developed immensely under the broad radar of the export market, and its size is beyond imagination. Unfortunately, there has been no study that explores the whole universe of the RMG sector of Bangladesh rather the story of the RMG sector often involves the export market only. The discussion of this paper intends to explore the methodology of unboxing the whole universe of the RMG sector of Bangladesh that includes small and medium-sized manufacturing and processing units that are often involved with subcontracting for other factories (producing for the export market as well as domestic market), are suppliers of the domestic market, are producers of accessories, and are providing backward linkages and associated services. The discussion addresses that along with export-oriented RMG factories there exists an unexplored and unboxed universe of manufacturing and processing units associated with the RMG sector of Bangladesh that contributes to investment, employment, trade, export, and the economy as a whole, all of which remains unaccounted for.

This paper explores the causal relationship between working capital management and corporate profitability of manufacturing sector of Bangladesh. Sample data is composed of 21, Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) listed companies of Bangladesh, of four different industries from the year 2011 to 2015. A multivariable model has been developed to examine the association between profitability and the working capital management. In the analysis, current ratio and debt ratio have been used as control variables. The findings clearly indicate a negative relationship between working capital management and profitability in the overall manufacturing sector as well as in each of these four industries and significance level varies from industry to industry.

The Muslims of Bangladesh are separated into diverse religious, political, and social groups. Several scholars tried to unite Muslims. One of the most significant Islamic intellectuals of Bangladesh, Sheikh Azizur Rahman Nesarabadi, proposed a paradigm of religious harmony to unite the Bangladeshi people and global nations. According to him, religious harmony with the doctrine of Ittihad Ma’al al-Ikhtelaf (Unity in Diversity) is the only key answer to the current disunity at the national, international, and global levels. This study examines his concept and his role in the society and politics of Bangladesh by textual analysis of primary and secondary data. After analyzing religious harmony itself, we deliver a brief biography of Sheikh Azizur Rahman, presenting his contribution to both Sharia and Sufi education, and their effects on his vision. The study then emphasizes his thoughts on four steps of religious harmony and analyses in light of current social realities in Bangladesh and the Muslim world. This paper concludes that Sheikh Nesarabadi’s thought and theory on religious harmony depend upon three foundations: common good interest, moderation, mutual respect, and the Tawhidic model. These contain the structure for religious harmony of Muslim unity whose implementation by Muslims can achieve the command of Allah to empower the Ummah to continue a leading role in the world as a Khalifah of Allah SWT almighty.

In today’s world with the increasing population, the world's energy needs are growing steadily andthe crisis for power is also increasing. All the conventional sources of energy like gas, coal, oil etc are limited. In this situation, the need for establishing a renewable energy source as an alternative energy generation systemhas become very important for sustainable energy security of the country. Among various renewable energysources, solar energy comprises a large portion. The solar energy captivated by Earth’s atmosphere, oceansand land is about 385000 EJ[1]. But only less than 1% of useful energy comes from solar power [2]. Thisstatistics shows that, the sun shine produces 35000 times more power on earth than the daily power productionusing solar energy. Thus the earth receives more energy from the sun in just one hour than the world uses in awhole year.[3] The conversion of sunlight into electricity using solar cells system (10-14%) is worthwhile way ofproducing this alternative energy. Bangladesh receives strong sunshine throughout the whole year (3.8-6.42Kw-hr/m2) and it has been found that the average sunshine hours are 6.69, 6.16 and 4.81in winter, summer andmonsoon, respectively.[4] Bangladesh is also adopting means to use solar energy day by day. Many privateCompanies in Bangladesh import solar panels from abroad and sell them into the country. The approximatecost for importing readymade panels varies from 90-98 BDT per Wp. There are some companies which importsolar cells from foreign countries and assemble them into panels. The average cost for importing cells isapproximately 41-57 BDT per Wp. The cost of assembled panels from imported cells is approximately 78-84BDT per Wp. From the analysis it is found that, the cost of a locally produced PV panel is 10 percent lower thanimported ones [5] because of 60% cost incurs for producing cells from raw materials. Although solar panels arebeing produced in Bangladesh, till now solar cells have not been fabricated yet. In Bangladesh for the first time‘Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC)’ is going to set up a laboratory to fabricate crystalline solarcells. It is anticipated that producing cells from raw materials locally and then assembling them into PV panelswill reduce the cost almost 30%. This paper explores how fabricating crystalline solar cells locally isanticipated to reduce cost of solar panels. If the cost effective technology could be made familiar in Bangladeshthen it would help in solving our power crisis in a great deal.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jme.v42i1.15934

The Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing are the modern innovative technology in garments manufacturing like all other manufacturing sectors. Garments CAD is specially used for pattern designing and marker making. On the other hand CAM is used for fabric cutting and other manufacturing sections. Before implementing those new technologies, manual system was widely used in garments sector. In recent time some large garments factories of Bangladesh are starting to adopt CAD and CAM technology. Beside that a huge number of medium and small size factories are using manual system yet. This paper presents a feasibility study of CAD and CAM technology in above mentioned different size factories in Bangladesh. The Study is carried out in respect of production procedure, required man power, production/hr, product quality, production efficiency, and production cost. The practical investigation and data shows the scenario that all types of garments industries are not capable to use CAD & CAM and also not even profitable for them.

The paper aims to determine factors that make a significant impact on working capital management of a manufacturing company in Bangladesh. Of 221 service and manufacturing firms listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange, 109 companies are chosen based on data availability for the five-year period 2014-2018. The study examines literature on working capital management and tests theory on manufacturing companies listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange. Cash conversion cycle is used as a measurement of working capital efficiency. Financial ratios representing six aspects of company's financial performance are taken as explanatory variables. They represent company asset management, debt structure, growth, liquidity, profitability, and size. The paper runs multivariate regression and correlation on the 545 firm-year observations in the panel data. Multicollinearity among the final statistically significant explanatory variables has also been tested. It is observed that company growth, profitability, and leverage can significantly explain company working capital efficiency in the manufacturing industry of Bangladesh.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of Textile and clothing (T&C) exports on environmental quality in Bangladesh’s economy. The fact that Bangladesh’s clothing industry is one of the biggest T & C exporters in the world, justifies the importance of environmental evaluation in the case of Bangladesh’s T&C. In this regard, this study has used the yearly time series data of T&C sector exports, CO2 per capita, and ecological footprint per capita (EF) as a measure of environmental quality measurement from 1983 to 2019. The empirical investigation is carried out by applying the Autoregressive distribution lag model (ARDL) method. The findings of the study have identified the significant impact of the T&C industry on the environment of Bangladesh. The empirical findings demonstrate that T&C exports have made a significant positive contribution to environmental degradation in Bangladesh (both CO2 and EF). The study recommended that policymakers can introduce environmentally friendly ways of production. To reduce carbon dioxide emissions, one should start a cleaner production while taking energy consumption and economic growth into account. Hence, the policy focuses on improving various aspects of production, especially green manufacturing to mitigate the adverse effect of the industry on the environment.

This paper investigates the technical efficiency of selected manufacturing industries of Bangladesh using a stochastic frontier production function approach suggested by Battese and Coelli (1992) applied to panel data. A feasible Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function, which has time-varying technical inefficiency effects, was estimated. Two alternative distributions were used to model the random inefficiency term: a truncated normal distribution and a half-normal distribution. The estimated average technical efficiency for four groups of industries of Bangladesh over the reference period was 40.22% of potential output for the truncated normal distribution, whereas it was 55.57% of potential output for the half-normal distribution.

Purpose Emission of the suspended particulate matter (SPM) from cement factories results in a wide range of negative health effects to its workers. It induces substantial cost incurred by them in the form of wage loss and mitigation cost. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to estimate emission-induced cost of illness (COI) and the share of this cost that could be saved through limiting the current emission level at national safety standard. Design/methodology/approach COI approach which accounts workers’ wage loss and mitigation cost due to emission-induced illness was used in this study. A sample of 120 workers from three factories followed by 40 from each was randomly surveyed for collecting information on their health status and mitigation cost. It covered almost 10 percent of cement factory workers in the south-west region of Bangladesh. In addition, factory-specific emission data were also collected from the Department of Environment for addressing the study objective. Findings It revealed that the average level of SPM emission by these factories which was almost three times higher than the national safety standard induced 34.39 million Bangladeshi Taka (BDT) (USD0.46 million) as COI paid by workers yearly. It accounted around 28 percent of their annual income of which 64 percent worth BDT22.16 (USD0.30) million could be saved by meeting the standard annually. Originality/value This study provides insights into the essence of regulating cement industrialists toward meeting the national safety standard of emission.

ABSTRACT Multinational firms frequently outsource the manufacturing of their products to factories in less-developed countries to take advantage of much lower labor costs. A tragic disaster occurred in Bangladesh in April 2013 when a clothing factory building collapsed, killing more than 1,000 workers. Subsequently, textile companies in the U.S. and in Europe that outsource their manufacturing in Bangladesh had to decide whether to commit to better working conditions by signing one of two worker safety agreements (WSAs) born from the aftermath of the tragedy. Although many firms signed one of these agreements, many more did not. This study explores the relationship between an actual corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitment and firm performance using a sample of companies that signed one of the WSAs after the Bangladesh disaster and those that did not. The results suggest that the decision to sign is positively associated with social visibility, prior CSR performance, and impact in stock price after the tragedy. Regarding subsequent performance, investors favorably responded to the news of firms' signing the WSA agreement.

This paper examines the regulation of corporate governance on leverage structure decision-making in Bangladesh from 2003 to 2017. Appropriate panel methods are employed to control the problems of serial correlation, heteroskedasticity, and the cross-sectional nature of manufacturing companies. The study finds that corporate governance attributes such as board size, managerial ownership, and duality are the dominant factors for leverage decision-making. The results also indicate that control variables such as firm size and profitability have an influential role on leverage decision-making in Bangladesh. Our findings substantiate the idea that political and family connections to corporate governance structure greatly influence the leverage decision-making of corporate firms in Bangladesh.

This study describes the optimality in resource utilization of the manufacturing firms in the south-west region of Bangladesh. A translog production function has been estimated to describe the input-output relationship. The large scale firms have the opportunity to substitute capital for labour for producing the same level of output. On the other hand, scarcity in capital leads to lower productivity of labour in medium and small firms. Therefore, an increase in capital may lead to an increase in labour productivity as well as output for these small and medium firms. The productive labour force may ensure proper utilization of the capital resources as well as the long run growth.
