Повний текст джерелаThe site of Ayn Soukhna stands out in the Egyptian archaeological landscape as a precursor of metallurgical innovations, in particular through the demonstration of an innovative smelting process and the intentional production of arsenic copper alloys. As an intermittent port, Ayn Sukhna reveals a unique wealth of data on six distinct metallurgical chaînes opératoires from the Old Kingdom and the early Middle Kingdom, including two melting methods for the Old Kingdom and four combining smelting and melting for the early Middle Kingdom. This diversity offers an unrivalled perspective on metallurgical practices, from ore collection to recycling, in a chronologically precise context. The exceptional conservation of the site, aided by its status as an intermittent port and the desert conditions, makes it possible to study workshops and structures in different states of preservation, offering a window onto a 'frozen' metallurgical technology waiting to be revived. This unique situation offers a valuable insight into strategic, state-run production methods, incorporating both Old Kingdom traditions and early Middle Kingdom innovations.State management emphasises a rigorous and appropriate selection of materials, influenced by local environmental and geological conditions. Production techniques benefit from this adaptation, particularly in the specific morphology of the smelting furnaces, designed according to the quality of the ores available. The smelting processes at Ayn Soukhna are particularly remarkable, avoiding the use of crushed ores or charcoal, and requiring neither high temperatures, forced blowers nor the production of liquid slag. This ingenious process enables efficient reduction, decarbonisation and protection of the copper beads from oxidation, thanks to an L-shaped structure optimised for precise control of temperature and oxidation-reduction conditions. The p-XRF analyses played a key role in understanding metallurgical practices, revealing an absence of arsenic in primary processes, but confirming its intentional addition in secondary metallurgy to create specific alloys. This discovery underlines a deliberate choice by the metallurgists of the time, marking an important step in the evolution of metallurgical techniques. The importance of Ayn Soukhna goes beyond the simple production of copper, revealing a sophisticated state system for the management of metallurgy, from extraction to recycling. This system highlights the meticulous planning of shipments, the standardisation of procedures and the control of production, illustrating a meticulous management system that had a direct impact on the morphology of the tools and the teleology of the structures used by the metallurgists.Ayn Soukhna, as a major site for the ancient Egyptian economy, sheds light on a hitherto little-known area of technology, demonstrating not only advanced primary and secondary production techniques, but also the crucial role played by state planning and control in optimising resources and metallurgical processes. This site is an exceptional illustration of the ingenuity and capacity for innovation of the ancient Egyptians in the field of metallurgy, reflecting their in-depth mastery of materials and manufacturing processes, essential to the production of tools and metal objects specific to their era
