This paper describes a framework supporting the development of open collaboration environments which integrate heterogeneous business services. The framework facilitates the user cooperation in the execution of shared activities by offering a workspace awareness support which abstracts from the business services employed to operate. The management of the workspaces of the user’s collaborations is based on the functions offered by the Collaborative Task Manager (CTM), which offers a lightweight and flexible model for handling more or less complex collaborations. The CTM is integrated with business services in a loosely coupled way which supports the management of parallel workspaces for accessing the user’s collaboration contexts, their objects and the related awareness information.

Project-based learning (PBL) is an important form of collaborative learning that has a significant positive impact on student capacity development. However, data generated during long periods of PBL are difficult to record in real time, and there is a dearth of specific empirical research on the relationship between the quality of collaboration and the effectiveness of collaboration. In this study, we employ text mining to measure and analyze process data from a college physics course that utilizes project-based learning at a university. Under the group awareness theory, we construct a project-based learning system and extract six multi-dimensional awareness data (including numbers of text, cognitive awareness, emotional awareness, behavioral awareness, social awareness of group members, and group leaders’ cognitive awareness of the project). These data are then utilized to build a multiple regression model, which enables the analysis of collaboration quality within collaborative groups. The results show that the group awareness information automatically processed by text mining can reflect the quality of collaboration, and the quality of collaboration can determine about 50% of the effectiveness of collaboration. The important factors affecting the collaboration quality of project-based learning were group leaders’ cognitive awareness of the project and the cognitive awareness of group members. Therefore, in order to improve the quality of collaboration in PBL, teachers should select responsible group leaders and encourage meaningful communication between group members, thereby fostering high-quality and sustainable collaboration development.

When collaborating face-to-face, people commonly use the surfaces and spaces around them to perform sensemaking tasks, such as spatially organising documents, notes or images. However, when people collaborate remotely using desktop interfaces they no longer feel like they are sharing the same space. This limitation may be overcome through collaboration in immersive environments, which simulate the physical in-person experience. In this paper, we report on a between-groups study comparing collaborations on image organisation tasks, in an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) environment to more conventional desktop conferencing. Collecting data from 40 subjects in groups of four, we measured task performance, user behaviours, collaboration engagement and awareness. Overall, the VR and desktop interface resulted in similar speed, accuracy and social presence rating, but we observed more conversations and interaction with objects, and more equal contributions to the interaction from participants within groups in VR. We also identified differences in coordination and collaborative awareness behaviours between VR and desktop platforms. We report on a set of systematic measures for assessing VR collaborative experience and a new analysis tool that we have developed to capture user behaviours in collaborative setting. Finally, we provide design considerations and directions for future work.

While over the past decade social network sites have enabled both learners and teachers to set up various forms of online collaborative learning environments, there is an ongoing discussion on how collaboration through these social media platforms can be situated with regard to the development of metacognitive awareness (Li, Pow & Cheung, 2015). This paper presents a study on the development of learners’ metacognitive awareness of first-year English majors collaborating in a closed Facebook group. The theoretical framework for the development of metacognition, proposed by Gunawardena et al. (2009), was used to analyse the students’ metacognitive strategies when working together online. The study shows that students utilise the social network site to complete given learning tasks, and extend their use of the forum by setting new learning goals and socialising with their peers. The students show that, through peer collaboration, they are able to evaluate and plan their learning process online.

This paper is foremost about experiments in embodying a transformative narrative of a self that makes possible mutual collaborative practice with others. The focus is less on what we ought to think or do, but rather on subtracting, letting go, self-identities that are no longer fit for collaborative purpose. We refer to this as subtractive awareness by which we mean becoming aware of obstacles that inhibit creative action with others. In a time when dominant narratives call for endless growth, accumulation and addition, there is perhaps an overlooked value in subtraction practiced in support of collaboration. We align with writers such as Jason Hickel (2020), and practitioners in the degrowth movement to argue that in an era of perpetual expansion, “less is more.”

Human-robot collaboration is a widespread topic within the concept of Industry 4.0. Such collaboration brings new opportunities to improve ergonomics and innovative options for manufacturing automation; however, most of the modern collaborative industrial applications are limited by the fact that neither collaborative side is fully aware of the partner: the human operator may not see the robot movement due to own engagement in the work process, and the collaborative robot simply has no means of knowing the position of the operator. Dynamic replanning of the robot trajectory with respect to the operator's current position can increase the efficiency and safety of cooperation since the robot will be able to avoid collisions and proceed in task completion; however, the other side of communication remains unresolved. This paper provides a review of methods of improving human awareness during collaboration with a robot. Covered techniques include graphical, acoustic and haptic feedback implementations. The work is focused on the practical applicability of the approaches, and analyses present challenges associated with each method.

Purpose Research has shown that instruction in morphological awareness improves students' understanding and use of affixes. However, morphological awareness instruction, typically, is not provided in the general education classroom, and there are few documented collaborations between teachers and speech-language pathologists (SLPs), the latter of whom have a unique expertise in language. Thus, the purpose of this article was to determine the feasibility of an SLP-guided morphological awareness instructional program in a general education classroom. Method After completing a webinar training in morphological awareness, 2 general education teachers implemented morphological awareness lessons in their classrooms over an 8-week period. The teachers and collaborating SLP met weekly to discuss the lessons. Following implementation of the lessons, the teachers completed a questionnaire surveying their opinions on the collaboration. They, along with their students, also completed pre- and postmeasures of their morphological awareness. Results Results indicated that the teachers' morphological awareness, as assessed by the morphological awareness measure, did not improve as a result of implementing the lessons; however, the teachers reported that they valued the collaboration and the importance of morphological awareness instruction. Most importantly, the students' morphological awareness skills increased significantly following receipt of the morphological awareness lessons. The effects of these gains were moderate to large. Conclusions Findings suggest that teachers with limited morphological awareness can successfully implement scripted morphological awareness lessons that result in meaningful gains in their students' morphological awareness. Limitations and suggestions for future research on the collaboration between SLPs and teachers are discussed.

Collaboration management involves capturing the collaboration process, coordinating the activities of the participating applications and humans, and/or providing awareness, i.e. information that is highly relevant to a specific role and situation of a process participant. In this paper, we propose an awareness provisioning solution that allows focusing, customizing, and temporally constraining the awareness delivered to each process participant. Unlike existing collaboration management technologies (such as workflow and groupware) that provide only a few built-in awareness choices, the proposed awareness solution allows the specification of what information is to be given to what users and at what time. To support this advanced level of awareness, we require the definition of awareness roles and the specification of corresponding awareness descriptions. Awareness roles can be dynamically created and associated with any process scope. Awareness descriptions define what information is to be given to users in an awareness role. Since awareness roles are created or become visible when they are needed, the existence of an awareness role also determines the appropriate time interval during which the information specified in the awareness description can be delivered. This awareness provisioning approach minimizes information overloading and allows the combination of process-relevant information with external information as needed by the process participants. The proposed awareness provisioning solution is employed by the Collaboration Management Infrastructure (CMI), a federated system for collaboration process management. In this paper, we introduce an Awareness Model (AM) for creating awareness specifications and defining related execution semantics. Awareness specifications in AM are specialized composite event specifications that define patterns of process-related events and external events, as well as how information should be digested from them. We also describe the implementation of CMI's awareness provisioning engine and related tools.

AbstractUnequal participation poses a challenge to collaborative learning because it reduces opportunities for fruitful collaboration among learners and affects learners’ satisfaction. Social group awareness tools can display information on the distribution of participation and thus encourage groups to regulate the distribution of participation. However, some groups might require additional explicit support to leverage the information from such a tool. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of combining a group awareness tool and adaptive collaboration prompts on the distribution of participation during web-based collaboration. In this field experiment, students in a university level online course collaborated twice for two-weeks (16 groups in the first task; 13 groups in the second task) and either received only a group awareness tool, a combination of a group awareness tool and adaptive collaboration prompts, or no additional support. Our results showed that students were more satisfied when the participation in their group was more evenly distributed. However, we only found tentative support that the collaboration support helped groups achieve equal participation. Students reported rarely using the support for shared regulation of participation. Sequence alignment and clustering of action sequences revealed that groups who initiated the collaboration early, coordinated before solving the problem and interacted continuously tended to achieve an equal distribution of participation and were more satisfied with the collaboration. Against the background of our results, we identify potential ways to improve group awareness tools for supporting groups in their regulation of participation, and discuss the premise of equal participation during collaborative learning.

One of the breakthroughs in the realm of education management is the massive discourse on teacher collaboration as an effort to improve students' betterment in learning. Thus, this qualitative research aimed to investigate the perceptions of students, from a high school in Rejang Lebong Regency, about the practice of teacher collaboration which had previously been carried out for 10 meetings on the subject of Islamic education. 15 students were selected purposively and involved as the participants. They were interviewed on an ongoing basis. The interview data were then analyzed using an interactive model. The study’s findings mapped students' perceptions of teacher collaboration into several themes and sub-themes. First, the students perceived that teacher collaboration supported collaborative learning, in which collaborative learning contributed to students' critical thinking skills, intercultural competence, and problem-solving skills. Second, teacher collaboration increased students’ learning awareness. Third, teacher collaboration contributed to the improvement of students' metacognition. This study has raised the essence of teacher collaboration variables, such as collaborative learning, critical thinking skills, intercultural competence, problem-solving skills, learning awareness, and metacognition. Further research can conduct psychometric analyses of these variables for the sake of developing a new theoretical model for the construct of teacher collaboration.

Grounded in sociocultural theory, collaboration has been recognized as a useful teaching method. In English teaching, while a number of studies have examined the effectiveness of collaboration on grammar, research on pragmatic awareness is scarce. As such, this study explored how collaboration influenced, firstly, grammatical and pragmatic awareness and, secondly, error correction: the two major components in language competence. In this study, 32 Taiwanese English major juniors and seniors with CEFR B2 were recruited. These participants were required to work individually and collaboratively to identify pragmatic/grammatical errors, to rate the severity of the errors, and to correct these errors in a discourse completion task (DCT). The results revealed that peer collaboration achieved higher scores on error identification, severity ratings, and error correction than did individual work. The facilitative effects of collaboration may have been attributable to collaborative and expert–novice interaction patterns that showed a high degree of mutuality and equality during discussions. In conclusion, the findings showed that collaboration echoed the spirit of sociocultural theory, and could serve as a useful approach in English instruction, to create a sustainable learning environment in an EFL context such as Taiwan, where the national bilingual 2030 policy has been launched to require learners to develop life-long learning of English.

Augmented reality (AR) can create the illusion of being virtually co-located during remote collaboration, e.g., by visualizing remote co-workers as avatars. However, spatial awareness of each other's activities is limited as physical spaces, including the position of physical devices, are often incongruent. Therefore, alignment methods are needed to support activities on physical devices. In this paper, we present the concept of Re-locations, a method for enabling remote collaboration with augmented reality in incongruent spaces. The idea of the concept is to enrich remote collaboration activities on multiple physical devices with attributes of co-located collaboration such as spatial awareness and spatial referencing by locally relocating remote user representations to user-defined workspaces. We evaluated the Re-locations concept in an explorative user study with dyads using an authentic, collaborative task. Our findings indicate that Re-locations introduce attributes of co-located collaboration like spatial awareness and social presence. Based on our findings, we provide implications for future research and design of remote collaboration systems using AR.

Mutual awareness of visual attention is essential for collaborative work. In the field of collaborative virtual environments (CVE), it has been proposed to use Field-of-View (FoV) frustum visualisations as a cue to support mutual awareness during collaboration. Recent studies on FoV frustum visualisations focus on asymmetric collaboration with AR/VR hardware setups and 3D reconstructed environments. In contrast, we focus on the general-purpose CVEs (i.e., VR shared offices), whose popularity is increasing due to the availability of low-cost headsets, and the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. In these CVEs collaboration roles are symmetrical, and the same 2D content available on desktop computers is displayed on 2D surfaces in a 3D space (VR screens). We prototyped one such CVE to evaluate FoV frustrum visualisation within this collaboration scenario. We also implement a FoV visualisation generated from an average fixation map (AFM), therefore directly generated by users' gaze behaviour which we call Cone of Vision (CoV). Our approach to displaying the frustum visualisations is tailored for 2D surfaces in 3D space and allows for self-awareness of this visual cue. We evaluate CoV in the context of a general exploratory data analysis (EDA) with 10 pairs of participants. Our findings indicate that CoV is beneficial during shifts between independent and collaborative work and supports collaborative progression across the visualisation. Self-perception of the CoV improves visual attention coupling, reduces the number of times users watch the collaborator's avatars and offers a consistent representation of the shared reality.

In recent years, brand collaboration products have become increasingly popular among young consumers. Amid fierce competition in the cosmetics market, cooperation between brands has emerged as a novel marketing model. Companies introduce sentiment-driven collaboration products to enhance consumer brand preference and stimulate purchase intentions. This study aims to define the concept, purpose, and types of multilateral collaborations for cosmetics brands, drawing on previous studies, and analyze the factors influencing consumers' purchase intention. This study selected Innisfree’s design collaboration, which is gaining popularity in China, as the focal point. Awareness and preference for brand design collaborations were identified, and their effect on consumers' purchase intentions was analyzed. In addition, the study also exploited the mediating relationship by examining the correlation between the type of cosmetic brand design collaboration, brand preference, and consumer purchase intention. The results indicated that character collaboration, art collaboration, and brand collaboration all positively impacted consumers' purchase intentions in the context of cosmetics brand design collaboration.

One prominent strategy of the university network of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is to promote collaboration between the ASEAN universities. Although there are Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) among Asian Universities, the number of collaborative actions are considered extremely low. More than 10 years, PNRU implement on collaboration policy with other ASEAN’s universities. The processes and obstructions of the collaboration between universities in ASEAN were studied by the researcher. This study showed present situation of PNRU and other ASEAN’s universities collaboration. Therefore, the collaboration model between universities in ASEAN was established. The findings revealed that PNRU pursued collaborative activities covering only student and personnel exchange programs. The collaboration obstacles were: 1) policies and goals, 2) implementation plans, 3) university bureaucracy, and 4) language proficiency. A model for university collaboration comprised collaboration processes and principles. A collaboration model for the ASEAN university network involves clear goals, financial and resource support, implementation planning, and raising awareness of participants for collaboration.

Scholars in fields such as Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) have extensively covered the general theme of distributed collaboration in the past few decades. Recent advances in web technologies have pushed forward the boundaries of what is possible to create on the web, aiding the development of various types of collaborative software. Standing on the shoulders of previous research, and in the light of the new web technologies, we here outline the development of what we label a “synchronous shared workspace”. The purpose of the system is to serve as a web-based collaboration tool for small groups of geographically and/or temporally dispersed persons within a learning context. Designing this type of system presents interesting challenges on how to graphically visualize the presence of others and their activities, i.e. awareness information. Further, the system provides other types of functionalities such as visualizing previous activities and real-time manipulation of media objects that provides challenges for designers. Utilizing a “design pattern” approach, this paper explores visualization patterns for collaboration in shared workspaces in order to support mutual awareness and coordination activities. Five design patterns were implemented in the system and evaluated by a small group of online learners. The results support the notion that visualization of awareness information is a complex issue and that the work to provide effortless coordination of collaboration is a research interest that needs more attention.

Intercultural communication is a fundamental aspect in EFL classrooms since language teaching (LT) classrooms have tended to provide learners with environments to improve their cultural awareness and intercultural communication in the academic discourses. Researches of both spoken and written discourses have demonstrated that linguistic phenomena are related to their society and culture. The present paper is concerned with the impact of using collaborative technologies to create a relaxed and open atmosphere for language learning, increase retention of cultural background knowledge and stimulate both creative and critical thinking during language classrooms at Kazakh Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages. This paper outlines the culture-aware collaborative technologies founded on task-based approach within a discourse view of language, culture and communication, and presents the findings on how those culturally sensitive communication tasks in foreign-language teaching can influence people to succeed in collaboration with the target language users in a sociocultural context. The initiatives to create an intercultural environment and encourage effective intercultural collaboration in EFL classrooms has a positive impact on language learners’ personal and professional development, with greater understanding of social and cultural issues, ethical awareness and intercultural communication.

PurposeThis paper aims to advance the understanding regarding the profiting of collaborative innovation practices, focusing particularly on how the intensity of collaboration along the innovation process and the relatedness between the partners’ technological bases affect the outcomes of such process in terms of efficiency and generation of technological innovations.Design/methodology/approachDrawing on the results from causal models and the estimation of average marginal effects, this research analyses the direct and joint effect of technological proximity and intensity of collaboration in the early and late phases of the process.FindingsThe findings suggest that there is a positive unconditional relationship between the aforementioned aspects and innovative performance and that the joint effects diverge depending on the stage of the process, i.e. while in the early phase collaborating intensely with close partners seems to be advisable, this circumstance proves to be problematic in the late phase of the innovation process.Originality/valueThe analysis developed provides clarity regarding relevant aspects of collaborative innovation practices, particularly, the search for and selection of optimal partners. In general terms, the evidence found here suggests seeking for collaborating intensely along the whole process with partners whose technological bases present a tight matchup with that of the focal firm. Results also call for awareness of the potential drawbacks derived from intense collaborations with close partners in the late phases of the process, thus hinting toward the convenience of developing protection mechanisms. In addition, this work provides interesting insights that challenge the notion of “proximity paradox” and set out further questions that might be worth considering for future research.

For prospective elementary education teachers, critical thinking and collaboration skills in project-based science learning can impact environmental awareness. Critical thinking and collaboration skills can affect prospective teachers' environmental awareness differently, especially in science learning with environmental material. This research aims to determine the effect of critical thinking and collaboration skills on environmental awareness. Correlational research was used to determine the relationship between the two variables. Research data was obtained from 114 prospective Elementary Education teachers at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang through project-based learning. Assessment of critical thinking skills was based on reports or essays from projects undertaken. The collaboration instrument was based on rubrics and peer questionnaires. The environmental awareness instrument used a 27-item questionnaire. The questionnaire was measured using a Likert scale of 1 (strongly disagree) – 4 (strongly agree). The data obtained was tested using SEM to determine the effect of critical thinking and collaboration skills on environmental awareness. The research results show that critical thinking and collaboration skills positively affect environmental awareness. This is indicated by a P-value for critical thinking skills is 0.047 0.05 and a P-value for collaboration skills is 0 0.05. Collaboration skills have a stronger effect on environmental awareness than critical thinking skills (path coefficients = 0.766). Indicators of collaboration skills tend to emphasize the aspect of caring more about others and the surrounding environment. The suggestion for further research is needed to see the effects of other variables on environmental awareness in project-based science learning, such as creative thinking and communication skills.

Research on online collaborative learning has explored various methods of collaborative improvement. Recently, learning analytics have been increasingly adopted for ascertaining learners’ states and promoting collaborative performance. However, little effort has been made to investigate the transformation of collaborative states or to consider cognitive load as an essential factor for collaborative intervention. By bridging collaborative cognitive load theory and system dynamics modeling methods, this paper revealed the transformation of online learners’ collaborative states through data analysis, and then proposed an optimized mechanism to ameliorate online collaboration. A quasi-experiment was conducted with 91 college students to examine the potential of the optimized mechanism in collaborative state transformation, awareness of collaboration, learning achievement, and cognitive load. The promising results demonstrated that students learning with the optimized mechanism performed significantly differently in collaboration and knowledge acquisition, and no additional burden in cognitive load was noted.

Collaborative work is characterized by frequently changing situations and corresponding demands for tool support and interaction behavior provided by the collaboration environment. Current approaches to address these changing demands include manual tailoring by end-users and automatic adaptation of single user tools or for individual users. Few systems use context as a basis for adapting collaborative work environments, mostly focusing on document recommendation and awareness provision. In this paper, we present, firstly, a generic four layer framework for modeling and exploiting context. Secondly, a generic adaptation process translating user activity into state, deriving context for a given focus, and executing adaptation rules on this context. Thirdly, a collaboration domain model for describing collaboration environments and collaborative situations. Fourthly, examples of exploiting our approach to support context-based adaptation in four typical collaboration situations: co-location, co-access, co-recommendation, and co-dependency.

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the work dynamics of software development teams with the sudden adoption and subsequent continuation of remote work. New practices were adopted to maintain relationships between team members, mediated by computational tools. However, this presents an additional challenge for people with visual or hearing impairments. This study identifies different experiences of professionals with and without these disabilities in maintaining awareness when working remotely. To achieve this objective, 93 responses were collected through an online form from professionals, with and without visual or hearing impairments, and the supervision of a collaboration tool, among the most mentioned due to the lack of accessibility for people with visual impairments, using the Semiotic Inspection Method with Screen Reader (MIS-LT). The results point to different groups’ experiences with the use of collaborative tools on the social aspects of remote collaboration and an assessment of the communicability and accessibility of the inspected tool.

Traditionally, research about collaboration in business communication classes has focused on small-group interaction and peer review of documents. Yet, computer classrooms and electronic networks used for teaching business communication today are affecting how traditional collaboration works and are opening up new possibilities for collaborative activity. One exciting possibility is using network technology to promote collaboration beyond the four walls of a single classroom. This article outlines a model for distance collaboration between business writing classrooms using network technology and discusses new ways to teach national and international audience awareness, problem solving, and the contextual nature of cases.

The relationship and collaboration process between university-industry-policy entities have been the subject of increased interest especially when dealing with environmental matters. Collaboration approach is an effort that unites different entities together in a shared objective. However, there are few challenges or barriers which make it difficult to develop collaboration relationships between entities. Although the linkages are often mentioned about the collaborative linkages among university-industry-policy entities, none has information on the barriers of collaborative linkages especially on environmental matters in Sarawak. Thus, there is a need to identify the barriers and success factors in order to develop successful collaboration. This study addressed the gap through a mixed method of qualitative and quantitative approach where the data were collected from 199 respondents based on a face-to-face interview using structured questionnaires in Sarawak. The study explores the status of collaboration in Sarawak and its barriers. Findings indicated that the collaboration status in Sarawak is still in an infant stage resulting from barriers of collaboration which are lack of funding, private knowledge, lack of commitment, difficult to implement collaboration, weak/lack policies, poor awareness, top management view/support, acceptance of collaboration, bureaucracy and differences in company culture.

Abstract Light pollution contributes to sustainability issues in urban areas. Raising awareness regarding light pollution and its effects becomes a necessity to increase individual contribution in reducing light pollution. We chose light pollution as a topic for collaborative courses in our university to facilitate collaboration between courses’ participants in promoting awareness regarding light pollution to the public. The participants were required to work in groups to explore light pollution issues. They also collected light pollution data using a citizen science project. They were also required to design visual media and plan a public event to promote public awareness. Students’ surveys were collected to assess the benefits of this collaborative project and as part of evaluation tools. The impact of the project to the society will be measured in the future since more data are needed.

Purpose – Online collaboration – a required method for many problem-solving situations in today’s work environments – has many aspects that are not clearly understood or explored. One of them is how work styles, specifically leadership styles, within a seemingly homogeneous teams with no prior role assignments affects the process and outcomes of collaboration. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the aspect of online collaboration to learn how different leadership styles that may emerge impact collaborative work. Design/methodology/approach – The work described here employs a user study involving 84 participants in 42 pairs, working in one of the three conditions across two sessions. The three conditions are defined based on the amount and the kind of awareness provided to the team members: no awareness of personal or team progress (C1), awareness of personal progress (C2), and awareness of both personal and team progress (C3). The log and chat data from the sessions where these teams work in collecting relevant information for two different topics are collected and analysed. Findings – Quantitative and qualitative analyses indicate the difference among the three conditions with respect to these two leadership styles. Specifically, it is found that those with the team awareness provided to them (C3) exhibited the least amounts of leadership, keeping the team relatively symmetric. The democratic nature of such teams also fostered more diverse searching behaviour and less need for communication. Originality/value – The work reported here is a first attempt to shed light on two kinds of connections: individual and team awareness to leadership style, and leadership style to diversity of information exploration.

Objectives: Interest is increasing in collaborations between public health and primary care to address the health of a community. Although the understanding of how these collaborations work is growing, little is known about the barriers facing these partners at the local level. The objective of this study was to identify barriers to collaboration between primary care and public health at the local level in 4 states. Methods: The study team, which comprised 12 representatives of Practice-Based Research Networks (networks of practitioners interested in conducting research in practice-based settings), identified 40 key informants from the public health and primary care fields in Colorado, Minnesota, Washington State, and Wisconsin. The key informants participated in standardized, semistructured telephone interviews with 8 study team members in 2014 and 2015. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. We analyzed key themes and subthemes by drawing on grounded theory. Results: Primary care and public health participants identified similar barriers to collaboration. Barriers at the institutional level included the challenges of the primary care environment, in which providers feel overwhelmed and resources are tight; the need for systems change; a lack of partnership; and geographic challenges. Barriers to collaboration included mutual awareness, communication, data sharing, capacity, lack of resources, and prioritization of resources. Conclusions: Some barriers to collaboration (eg, changes to health care billing, demands on provider time) require systems change to overcome, whereas others (eg, a lack of shared priorities and mutual awareness) could be addressed through educational approaches, without adding resources or making a systemic change. Overcoming these common barriers may lead to more effective collaboration.

This paper aims to explore two crucial aspects of collaborative work and learning: on the one hand, the importance of enabling collaborative learning applications to capture and structure the information generated by group activity and, on the other hand, to extract the relevant knowledge in order to provide learners and tutors with efficient awareness, feedback and support with regards to group performance and collaboration. To this end, in this paper we first propose a conceptual model for data analysis and management that identifies and classifies the many kinds of indicators that describe collaboration and learning into high-level aspects of collaboration. Then, we provide a computational platform that, at a first step, collects and classifies both the event information generated asynchronously from the users' actions and the labeled dialogues from the synchronous collaboration according to these indicators. This information is then analyzed in next steps to eventually extract and present to participants the relevant knowledge about the collaboration. The ultimate aim of this platform is to efficiently embed information and knowledge into collaborative learning applications. We eventually suggest a generalization of our approach to be used in diverse collaborative learning situations and domains.

Interruptions and situation awareness recovery are important issues in many task domains. Here, we explore the extent to which cognitive design principles for situation awareness recovery that were developed in the air warfare domain can be applied to team mission execution. We developed a tool, called team-CHEX, for presenting and managing messages and for helping users recover situation awareness following interruptions. We report two experiments that compared team-CHEX with two commonly employed mission execution recovery tools – chat and shared whiteboards. The results of the first experiment were used to refine specific interface features of team-CHEX. The final tool was superior to common chat designs and equal to, and in some respects superior to, common whiteboard designs. The revised and extended interruption recovery principles should be useful for the design of both monitoring tasks, such as air warfare, and team collaboration tasks, such as mission execution.

Collaboration is a core component of work activities amongst flight attendants. This is as they work to promote onboard safety and deliver a high level of customer service. Yet we know little of how flight attendants collaborate and how we can best design technology to support this collaboration. Through an interview study with flight attendants, the authors explored their collaborative practices and processes and how technology aided such practices. While technologies like interphones and flight attendant call buttons act as collaboration tools, they identified instances where the usability and functionality of these devices were barriers for maintaining efficient communication, situation awareness, and information exchange. The authors used these results to identify design suggestions for technology that can enhance communication and collaboration in aircraft settings amongst flight attendants. To illustrate these design suggestions, they designed and developed Smart Crew, a smartwatch application that allows flight attendants to maintain an awareness of each other and communicate through messaging with haptic feedback. Smart Crew is designed with an emphasis on real time information access, location updates and direct communication between flight attendants regardless of their location on the airplane.

To foster innovation and competition, an increasing number of software teams are becoming distributed. Such a distribution makes continuous collaboration and continuous awareness support a necessity and also a great challenge. Traditional desktop-based approaches are insufficient for the requirements of continuous awareness. In software development practice, an awareness tool on mobile devices is also desirable for team members to obtain the awareness information continuously. This paper addresses how to effectively present collaborative development activities using aesthetic visualization on mobile screens. Our approach supports multiple views suitable for software developers as well as team leaders. A baseline usability experiment and an eye-tracking experiment have evaluated the effectiveness and usability of the visualization method.
