With regard to military aviation, more precisely tactical, thispriority is coupled with an increasingly high and polymorphic search for performance. Whatcharacterize this type of aviation is the relationship between the performance pursued and theaccepted risks. It depends essentially on the context and the stakes of the missions to becarried out.The human factor approach is a major leverage for achieving this challenge. Thus, within theconstrained domain of aeronautics, the design and development of tools to assist crewcognition remains a prospect for the future, even if pilot training also becomes a majorchallenge for the coming years. In this context, the management of cognitive resources, and inparticular the specific management strategies put in place by the pilots, are central to thedecision-making process under constraints. In a research and engineering approach in cognition, we undertook a study involving pilotsand allowing the understanding of these mechanisms as well as the production ofrecommendations for the design of tools to help manage their cognitive resources. On thebasis of the analysis of feedback, and results of a preliminary experimental approach, we havebuilt a protocol to highlight the strategies implemented by the pilots in the context of anactivity during the descent and the final approach on the Clermont-Ferrand airport with acritical breakdown. The experimental results reconciled with our understanding hypotheseson the management of cognitive resources and management strategies, complete our analysisand recommendations for a tool to help manage the resources of the pilots

Furthermore, the contractual and tortious/delictual exposures of airlines are being scrutinized and the ways to handle them are being analyzed.
The main objectives are (i) to demonstrate that risk management is not restricted to insurance, but involves a number of techniques and procedures that have the potential not only to minimize risk but also to turn risk into opportunity and value and (ii) to identify the role of law as a management tool in the oncoming liberalized aviation environment.
White, P. Scott. "Commercial technology for aviation configuration management." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/8101.
Повний текст джерелаThis thesis examines the current policy and procedures used to manage naval aviation configuration control. It recommends that the Navy consult with SABRE Decision Technologies, or a company with a similar background, to re- engineer the process for approving configuration changes and create an information technology system to manage the process. During this study, I have identified two major challenges to naval aviation configuration policy. They are: (1) the process used to review and approve Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) is too complex and has too many stakeholders and (2) the current method for management of approved configuration changes is man-hour intensive, has potential for administrative error, and requires physical inspection to positively verify aircraft and equipment configurations. Finally, this study presents the theory that there are many common requirements between naval aviation maintenance and commercial airline maintenance. We should take advantage of the experience and technological innovations of industry and use them to make our configuration policy, and our entire maintenance effort, more effective for the users in the fleet

(cont.) payoff IT investments. When the North American Aerospace Industry invests less than any other industry in the high risk investments, its foreign counterpart invests more than any other industry. The second major finding is that the governance mechanisms in place are similar in the two Aerospace Industry segments, contrary to the IT Portfolios. IT decisions are made usually by IT executives or business executives, based on the information provided by Chief level executives and at least one other business group. Finally, the third major finding is that the Aerospace Industry gets above average returns from IT by being good at IT Business Planning, Top Management involvement and User Satisfaction. However, a major effort needs to be placed on improving user satisfaction as it is not always properly managed and hinders returns from IT. The lack of extensive communication also hinders the returns from IT by not guarantying top management involvement and awareness of the IT governance mechanisms.
This thesis originated by a need for the Lean Aerospace Industry to study in the Aerospace Industry what seems to be a troublesome domain for many other industries: Information Technologies (IT). Beforehand, there were two ways to do so: study how aerospace companies implement major systems like Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Product Data Management (PDM). After a few short case studies, it seemed companies were puzzled by the true extent and the pervasiveness of IT. Therefore, we chose to not look at IT "locally" but try to understand the bigger picture. This thesis is largely based on the pioneering work done by Peter Weill and the Center for Information Systems Research of the MIT Sloan School of Management on IT Portfolio and IT governance. It rationalizes IT by setting it as a portfolio, just like financial investments. Balancing the IT portfolio will ensure anticipated alignment with the corporate strategies. However, the elaboration of proper IT governance mechanisms is necessary to ensure value and return from IT. Defining the governance is "specifying the decision rights and accountability framework to encourage desirable behavior on the use of IT". We therefore applied the IT Portfolio and IT governance frameworks defined by Peter Weill to the Aerospace Industry through the analysis of surveys available in Appendix D. We were able to get data from ten different companies spread out across the world. This allowed us to examine several IT profiles, and to make several significant findings, among which three are of major importance and are described below. The first major finding is that the North American IT portfolio is risk-averse, while the aggregated rest of the world is prone to invest heavily in high risk/high

Over the last decade the aerospace industry has seen a shift in traditional architectures of an aircraft. The desire for aircraft to be lighter, more efficient, quieter, faster, and cheaper has driven trends across the industry. These trends look for ways to accomplish what many other industries such as automotive have done which is a complete transformation of the "normal." The shift has created an advanced architecture for aircraft and therefore requires a new view on certification. The traditional approach for certification is pretty straightforward since majority of aircraft have been the same over several years with minor changes in sub level aircraft systems. Aircraft manufacturers in combination with suppliers develop concepts for new or improved aircraft, requirements are outlined and implemented based on aviation authority regulations, and eventually the aircraft receives a certificate declaring the safety of the aircraft design and production. In fairness, the traditional standard approach to aircraft certification has worked. Aircraft are safer than ever and data shows a sharp decline in aviation accidents over the years. However, with changes in technology what use to be the "normal" architecture is changing significantly and the desire for the industry to be more agile both play a role in the need to view certification slightly different. The main objective of certification has been, is, and will always be safety. This thesis proposes a framework on how to approach certification of new technologies. Perhaps the two most important elements in the framework are the proposal of a threshold utilizing the technology infusion effort equation to gage the significance of a change in architecture and the proactive safety analysis utilizing a new kind of technique called STPA. The framework is developed based on an in-depth outline of the traditional certification process and a review of the historical development of safety regulations. Two parts of the proposed framework are then applied and analyzed based on the more electric aircraft concept.

Distinctive technology and customer / supplier relationships are currently the primary sources of competitive advantage in the Aerospace industry. Modular Open System Architecture (MOSA) requirements represent a significant disruption to this mode of competition. The United States Department of Defense intends to accelerate the rate of aerospace innovation and inject additional competitiveness into the procurement process through the modularization of its products and effective intellectual property management. This combination of architectural disruption and new customer capabilities has the potential to reduce the industry's opportunity to capture value from innovative technologies or a position as first supplier. Historical examples such as Polaroid and IBM demonstrate the organizational paralysis that often results from disruptions in product architecture. The competitive formula becomes ingrained in the processes, resources, and culture of mature companies and is no longer explicit knowledge, which limits the company's ability to develop the capabilities required to compete in its new environment. Competing in a MOSA environment will require the development of new organizational capabilities such as rapid experimentation, fighting standards wars, and protecting system-level knowledge. Defining the disruptive threat and the foundations of current core competencies will enable firms to develop the organizational capabilities essential for this shift in competitive context.
(cont.) The author will present several historical examples of architectural disruption, a framework for evaluating the disruptive change, and an identification of organizational anchors that may hinder a particular competitor's ability to respond to MOSA. The goal of the thesis is to start a dialogue within an identified incumbent with in hopes of beginning the organizational transformation required to effectively compete in this new era.

This paper introduces multiple methods to set and optimize inventory levels. These methods are then classified based on the complexity involved to implement them. As an organization develops a deeper understanding of inventory, it becomes more mature and can apply more complex methods. This sequencing of methods is defined as a three phase maturity model. First, a foundational level of maturity is defined, which quantifies inventory levels based on future demand and business requirements. Second, a transitional level of maturity defines safety stock positioning in a single-echelon supply chain. Finally, the maturity model concludes with an optimal level of maturity that is based on principles of multi-echelon inventory optimization: safety stock at multiple positions of a supply chain. The setting for this paper was the Aerospace industry. Honeywell Aerospace is in the middle of a 3-year effort to re-engineer Sales, Inventory and Operations Planning (SIOP) systems. At the same time, Honeywell Aerospace is standardizing on a uniform implementation of an ERP system. Through SIOP, standard inventory and planning practices aided by the uniform ERP backbone and a strategic inventory program executive management hopes to reduce what is seen as a disproportionate contribution of inventory to Honeywell International.

Aviation has used petroleum-derived fuels for over 100 years. With the rapidly rising price of oil and concerns about supply, the military and the commercial airlines are fostering the development of an alternative aviation fuel industry. In the U.S., coal, oil shale and biomass offer great promise as alternatives to petroleum for the production of aviation fuels. For the alternative fuel to be viable, the fuel must be price competitive, offer environmental benefits compared to petroleum, and must be qualified and certified for use in aviation. This thesis explores the barriers and risks associated with the technology adoption life cycle for alternative aviation fuels as viewed through the lenses of the technology developer, the early adopter, the early majority user, and the financial community. The challenges related to crossing the "Valley of Death" between technology development and deployment, and bridging the "Chasm" between the early adopters and the early majority of users are explored and a series of evaluation frameworks, tools, models, and recommendations are presented. The suggestions and recommendations provide potential actions that the military and the civil aviation sector could implement to reduce the risks and barriers for an alternative aviation fuel industry to commence and be sustainable both financially and environmentally.

It is broadly recognized in the aerospace industry, as well as many others, that organizations which effectively execute development projects to meet desired cost, schedule, and performance targets for their customers produce higher levels of customer satisfaction and also a significant source of competitive advantage. Continually meeting the needs of the customer through effective project execution allows a company to become a preferred supplier favored in source selection for follow-on contracts and new development projects necessary for business growth. This research effort examines one aerospace company, which has multiple, diverse development projects on-going at any one time across several business units. The motivation for this thesis is to explore the product/system development capacity of the enterprise by analyzing the historical program performance of major projects, understanding the level of problem projects or fire fighting within the project pipeline, and the perceived causes of poor project performance. In addition, system dynamics models are developed to analyze the dynamics associated with project planning and resource planning strategies for both multi-project and single project scenarios. This analysis provides insight into the potential for project pipeline "tipping" and the effects of various project management and resource planning strategies in an aerospace product/system development context. Such analysis is believed to provide greater insight and opportunity to improve the product/system development performance for the enterprise.

The emergence of composite material application in major commercial aircraft design, represented by the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350-XWB, signals a new era in the aerospace industry. The high stiffness to weight ratio of continuous fiber composites (CFC) makes CFCs one of the most important materials to be introduced in modern aircraft industry. In addition to inherent strength (per given weight) of CFCs, they also offer the unusual opportunity to design the structure and material concurrently. The directional properties (and the ability to change these properties through the design process) of composite materials can be used in aeroelastically tailored wings, the fuselage and other critical areas. Due to the longer lifecycle (25-30 years) of a commercial airliner and the tools and processes developed for the airplane of previous product development cycles, new technology often ends up being deployed less effectively because of the mismatch in the technical potential (what can be done) vs. design tools and processes (what was done before). Tools and processes need to be current to take advantage of latest technology, and this thesis will describe one possible approach in primary composite structural design area using integrated structural analysis

Many aerospace companies are turning to additive manufacturing solutions to stream-line current production processes and open opportunities for on-demand producibility. While many OEMs are drawn to the appeal of the benefits that additive manufacturing brings, they are beginning to understand the difficulties in what it takes to realize those benefits. This paper analyzes additive manufacturing from an industry perspective down to a company perspective to develop a deeper understanding of the practical use cases as well as the various challenges a company faces should they choose to enter this market. This study begins with market research on the additive manufacturing and aerospace industry before honing in on a several use-case parts from rotary aircraft. Selection criterion were created and applied to analyze the value that additive manufacturing would bring in comparison to that of conventional methods, ultimately determining its feasibility for additive manufacturing.
This study applied the selection criterion to various parts of differing functions among the aircraft, resulting in a group of candidate parts. An evaluation method was created and applied to provide an objective assessment on the candidate parts. Initial insights show that additive manufacturing favor casted parts with features that can be optimized to increase performance and reduce costs and weight. In addition, aerospace has the best product mix of low volume parts that are advantageous to the economies of scale for additive manufacturing. Additionally, this study analyzes a company's organization and previous additive manufacturing efforts to propose ways to approach future development. Venturing through the various road maps that lead to the final goal of certification and addressing organizational barriers generate momentum for continuous development.
These road maps, selection criterion, and evaluation method can be applied through many applications within the general aerospace industry.

Повний текст джерелаThe warehouses are very important to meet competitive priorities of the organization. The late delivery of the material on production areas increases the costs because of the unproductivity and even fines due to the lack of the final product at the determined time. This essay was prepared with the objective to make an analysis of the warehouse management technics and how their use impact on the improvement of the productivity of the engines maintenance process in the aviation industry. In order to contextualize this research, a bibliographic revision of warehouse management concepts and an explanation of the engine maintenance scenario in aviation industry were performed. Issues on the warehouse supplying parts to the production area were identified and corrections were.
