Повний текст джерелаThe subject of this study is the issue of the evolution of american painting between the 60s and 80s in light of its pictorial practice. The work, in two parts, explains the sequence of events leading to the drastic upheaval of art at this time. It explains how the contributions of science and a general distrust of idealism transfer us from the essentialist concept of modernism (part i) to that of post-avant-garde (part ii) which is less preoccupied with the nature of art than with its function. Because american painting has played a major role in this evolution, the study tends to evaluate the influence of the singularity of american thought during this process. The method chosen for this evaluation consists of collating the analytic description of the works with the "deep" interpretation. This method is by no means exhaustive but is nevertheless significant. The analysis of the various movements and tendancies in this period is removed from the artists themselves so as to preserve a balance between the theoretical substrata of the works and that of their expressive value. This study would like to submit this epoch in american art, where the need for harmony has given way to a more complex yet potentially creative scientific approach, as the reflexion of the dualism of human nature; that of spirituality and materialism

Exiled in New York because of the war, several European artists, experienced an industrial, sexual and social modernity that led them to call into question their own identity as artists. Marcel Dchamp gave his most radical expression to this artistic crisis in a context dominated by the upheaval of the old sexual paradigms and the rise of industrial capitalism. The mechanization of labor, the development of mass- consumerism and the transformations in the condition of women strongly affected the avant-garde of the years and determined various strategies adopted by the artists in order to redefine their masculinity

Повний текст джерелаThis monograph on the theatrical works of Charles Ludlam (1943-1987), playwright, actor, director and founder of the Ridiculous Theatrical Company (1967-1987) in New York City, aimes at exploring the poetic underpinnings of the plays. Based on the study of the works’ reception, of Ludlam’s archive an down commentaries, and above all, of the plays per se, our purpose was ton reexamine the validity of the critical judgements on works which have note been seriously reconsidered since their original opening. Distancing ourselves from the usual labels attached to the playwright (gay theatre, entertainment, parody) we show that any real understanding of Ludlam ought to rely on an confrontation with the tradition of and reflection on western theatre practices. Ludlam thus enjoyed an ambiguous and ambibalent relationship with the avant-garde milieu of which he was part, which accounts in part for the misundersandings to which his work has fallen prey

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis studies a series of « histories of modern art », which circulated in France between 1900 and 1960, as a « hypertext» whose transformations can be understood as political reinterpretations of the same question, that is the form of the community they« describe ». Thus in the first half of the XX th Century, those narratives establish complex relations, and sharp distinctions, between «nation» and «Europe », «people» and «elites », «ethnic groups» and «races ». The organicist model the Third Republic favoured around 1900 and which triumphed al the Salon d'Automne would structure during three decades a narrative which referred either to the so-called psychology of the peoples or to the creative power of an elite, which according to the Action française, would save a Western Civilisation rooted in a Latin tradition. At the end of 1920s, the imperialist model of a « French Europe », dear to the maurrassians, coexisted with a narrative stressing the ethnic caracteristics of each « Europeân people ». Ln the early 30s, the political myth of a Latin Civilisation was at last dispeIIed in favour of the biological conception of a « Latin Europe » composed of ethnie groups belonging to the same « racial type ». A new « history of art» was designed to spread ideas similar to those of the diverse European fascisms. The «history of modern art », focused on international avant-gardes expressing the values of the « free world », that American and European groups tried to impose in the early 1950s, would then conflict not only with nationalist representations but also with the supranational, ethno-racial, « European » models of the interwar period
