Due to the ever increasing supply of new Internet of Things (IoT) devices being added onto a network, it is vital secure the devices from incoming cyber threats. The manufacturing process of creating and developing a new IoT device allows many new companies to come out with their own device. These devices also increase the network risk because many IoT devices are created without proper security implementation. Utilizing traffic patterns as a method of device type detection will allow behavior identification using only Internet Protocol (IP) header information. The network traffic captured from 20 IoT devices belonging to 4 distinct types (IP camera, on/off switch, motion sensor, and temperature sensor) are generalized and used to identify new devices previously unseen on the network. Our results indicate some categories have patterns that are easier to generalize, while other categories are harder but we are still able recognize some unique characteristics. We also are able to deploy this in a test production network and adapted previous methods to handle streaming traffic and an additional noise categorization capable of identify non-IoT devices. The performance of our model is varied between classes, signifying that much future work has to be done to increase the classification score and overall usefulness.

IoT (Internet of Things) devices are an exploding field, with many devices being created, manufactured, and utilized per year. With the rise of so many internet capable devices, there is a risk that the devices may have vulnerabilities and exploits able to allow unauthorized users to access. While a problem for a consumer network, this is an increased problem in an enterprise network, since much of the information on the network is sensitive and should be kept confidential and private. While a ban of IoT devices on a network is able to solve this problem, with the rise of machine learning able to characterize and recognize patterns, a smarter approach can be created to distinguish when and which types of IoT devices enter the network. Previous attempts to identify IoT devices used signature schemes specific to a single device, but this paper aims to generalize traffic behaviors and identifying a device category rather than a specific IoT device to ensure future new devices can also be recognized. With device category identification in place on an internet network, smarter approaches can be implemented to ensure the devices remain secure while still able to be used.

Virtually every industry and discipline (e.g., mining, pharmaceutical, construction, agriculture, reclamation, etc.) is finding applications for wireless data acquisition for monitoring and managing processes and resources. Two sectors, namely agriculture and environmental research, are seeking ways to obtain distributed soil and plant measurements over larger areas like a watershed or large fields rather than a single site of intensive instrumentation (i.e., a weather station). Wireless sensor networks and remote sensing have been explored as a means to satisfy this need. Commercial products are readily available that have remote wireless options to support distributed senor networking. However, these systems have been designed with a field engineer or technician as the target end-user. Equipment and operating costs, device specific programming languages, and complex wireless configuration schemes have impeded the adoption of large-scale, multi-node wireless systems in these fields. This report details the development of an easy-to-use, ultra-low power wireless datalogger incorporating a scalable, intelligent data collection and transmission topology. The final product can interface to various sensor types including SDI-12 and uses an LCD display to help simplify device setup.

Powerful, handheld computing devices have proliferated among consumers in recent years. Combined with new cameras and sensors capable of detecting objects in three-dimensional space, new gesture-based paradigms of human computer interaction are becoming available. One possible application of these developments is an automated sign language recognition system. This thesis reviews the existing body of work regarding computer recognition of sign language gestures as well as the design of systems for speech recognition, a similar problem. Little work has been done to apply the well-known architectural patterns of speech recognition systems to the domain of sign language recognition. This work creates a functional prototype of such a system, applying three architectures seen in speech recognition systems, using a Hidden Markov classifier with 75-90% accuracy. A thorough search of the literature indicates that no cloud-based system has yet been created for sign language recognition and this is the first implementation of its kind. Accordingly, there have been no empirical performance analyses regarding a cloud-based Automatic Sign Language Recognition (ASLR) system, which this research provides. The performance impact of each architecture, as well as the data interchange format, is then measured based on response time, CPU, memory, and network usage across an increasing vocabulary of sign language gestures. The results discussed herein suggest that a partially-offloaded client-server architecture, where feature extraction occurs on the client device and classification occurs in the cloud, is the ideal selection for all but the smallest vocabularies. Additionally, the results indicate that for the potentially large data sets transmitted for 3D gesture classification, a fast binary interchange protocol such as Protobuf has vastly superior performance to a text-based protocol such as JSON.

In this thesis, development of a control system is aimed for a 1 DOF haptic device, namely Haptic Box. Besides, it is also constructed. Haptic devices are the manipulators that reflect the interaction forces with virtual or remote environments to its users. In order to reflect stiffness, damping and inertial forces on a haptic device position, velocity and acceleration measurements are required. The only motion sensor in the system is an incremental optical encoder attached to the back of the DC motor. The encoder is a good position sensor but velocity and acceleration estimations from discrete position and time data is a challenging work. To estimate velocity and acceleration some methods in the literature are employed on the Haptic Box and it is concluded that Kalman filtering gives the best results. After the velocity and acceleration estimations are acquired haptic control algorithms are tried experimentally. Finally, a virtual environment application is presented.

IOT devices have the potential to improve asset lifecycle optimization because of their ability to provide relevant real time data to high level applications. This data with minimal latency can assist asset managers to control the behaviour of assets and asset users to optimize asset lifecycle cost. There are many environments that require asset tracking devices but this design focussed on motor vehicles with auxiliary functions and apparatus. This research work documented the design of an asset tracking device built and tested on a 32.bit microcontroller platform with built-in CAN peripheral. This design resolved handling multiple serial interfaces collating data simultaneously concatenating this data and transmitting the data via GPRS interface as a single UDP sentence. Apart from interfacing various serial interfaces to the Stm24f4 this design also implemented a Wireless module as well as a multichannel ADC Module. This design was accomplished by researching and implementing software techniques as well as researching the hardware/firmware in terms of DMA and Nested Vector Interrupt Controller of the STM32 devices. The solution that this design will accomplish is to provide the industry an asset-tracking device with data capturing functionality capable of delivering the above needs at reasonable data cost. The device designed in this thesis is the client device of asset tracking network. This design was accomplished on a proof of concept basis delivering built hardware in the form of various application modules interfaced to a 32 –bit microcontroller via uart, SPI and CAN.

Purpose: This thesis comprised two main phases. Initial work focused on clarifying the need and use case for a novel device to measure drilled bore depth in bone during osteosynthesis surgery. Next, I demonstrated the feasibility and reliability of an optical sensing device for automatic measurement of drilled bore depth in bone during surgery compared with conventional methods. Methods: I completed a structured Needs Assessment followed by an Engineering Design process to develop a series of prototypes using laser displacement sensors mounted on a surgical drill to determine drilled bore depth in bone. In all versions of the prototypes bore depth was computed based on a characteristic pattern of drilling velocity in bicortical bone. Prototypes consisted of one or more laser displacement sensors sending displacement and time data to a microprocessor and then a personal computer. After data filtering with a second order Butterworth filter velocity and acceleration were calculated using differentiation and double differentiation. Characteristic spikes in velocity and acceleration indicated cortical breach and allowed identification of bore depth. Exploratory experiments were done with multiple sensor arrangement concepts in porcine long bones, and more rigorous final evaluation experiments were done with the lead designs in pig hind limbs with comparison to CT scan as ‘gold standard’. Results: In exploratory experiments a design involving two laser displacement sensors angled towards the drilling axis measuring distance from a mock drill guide performed better than alternative designs. This design in final evaluation experiments showed superior performance to the conventional depth gauge under three clinically relevant drilling conditions (standard deviation 0.70 mm vs. 1.38 mm, 0.86 mm vs. 3.79 mm, 0.80 mm vs. 3.19 mm). A positive bias was present in all drilling conditions. Conclusions: An optical sensing device can be used to measure bore depth in bone during surgery.

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are an attractive means for companies to deliver value added services with which to improve customer satisfaction. Such ASR systems require a telephony interface to connect the speech recognition application to the telephone system. Commercially available telephony interfaces are usually operating system specific, and therefore hardware device driver issues complicate the development of software applications for different platforms that require telephony access. The drivers and application programming interface (API) for telephony interfaces are often available only for the Microsoft Windows operating systems. This poses a problem, as many of the software tools used for speech recognition research and development operate only on Linux-based computers. These interfaces are also typically in PCI/ISA card format, which hinders physical portability of the device to another computer. A simple, cheaper and easier to use USB telephony interface device, offering cross-platform portability, was developed and presented, together with the necessary API.

This thesis investigates a forecasting approach to clustering device behavior based on multivariate time series data. Identifying an equitable selection to use in conversion optimization testing is a difficult task. As devices are able to collect larger amounts of data about their behavior it becomes increasingly difficult to utilize manual selection of segments in traditional conversion optimization systems. Forecasting the segments can be done automatically to reduce the time spent on testing while increasing the test accuracy and relevance. The thesis evaluates the results of utilizing multiple forecasting models, clustering models and data pre-processing techniques. With optimal conditions, the proposed model achieves an average accuracy of 97,7%.

Efficiency is improved by making all functions remote controlled , so the astronomer does not have to move between the control room and the telescope to operate the instrument.

The increasingly sedentary lifestyle of the past 30 years has contributed to declining health. Consequently, exercise is vital for good health maintenance. The global Health and Fitness Industry repeatedly indicates the need for optimally managed exercise with accurate information feedback. Compared to other industries, the fitness industry is lagging behind in incorporating Information Technology into its operations. On the other hand, the most current exercise equipment impose fixed-trajectory exercise on users with the dominance of static equipment designs. These exercise equipment are normally deadweight-based equipment. In deadweight-based exercise equipment, the weights generally can be changed only when the equipment is inactive. Therefore, a more novel exercise environment is required for current exercisers in the fitness industry. This thesis explores to develop a computer-controlled pneumatic dynamic resistance exercise equipment with onboard data management. This new technology optimises exercise effectiveness for users. Exercisers will have advanced diagnostic capacity, and will capture user data which can be manipulated into meaningful information for use by Health and Fitness Industry stakeholders. This thesis will explore all the key concepts about computer-controlled equipment. The key concepts to be investigated will include FX (force-displacement) control technology, pneumatic system control, fail-safe mechanics, and Graphical User Interface design. The primary aim of the project is to replicate and enhance the functionality, performance, and sensation of deadweight-based equipment. A further aim of the project is to investigate the feasibility of designing a compact retrofit-able pneumatic unit to replace the deadweights of existing standard exercise equipment. The computer control will be implemented on a "National Instruments PXI" computer featuring Data Acquisition and Control (DAQAC) capacity, and the software will be implemented using "LabVIEW 7.0', which is a graphic object-oriented computer language developed to facilitate hardware I software communications.

The delivery of quality healthcare to all citizens at reasonable costs is an important challenge. With the increase in the aging population, the costs of managing chronic diseases increase. Today, healthcare services tend to shift from recovery to prevention. Remote healthcare monitoring is crucial for prevention and monitoring of chronic diseases since they require continuous and long-term monitoring. The advances in networking, mobile communications and medical device technologies offer a great potential to realize remote healthcare monitoring. However, seamless integration of multi-modal medical devices to the existing healthcare information systems is necessary for the automated use of medical device observations in related applications. The thesis addresses the automatic acquisition and use of multi-modal medical device observations in healthcare information systems. The interoperability of medical devices with healthcare information systems requires both physical connectivity and application level interoperability. Therefore, the thesis concentrates on both the medical device domain and the interoperability efforts on the existing healthcare information systems. It provides an interoperability solution based on ISO/IEEE 11073 and HL7 standards. This work is also realized the automatic acquisition and use of multi-modal medical device observations in an intelligent healthcare monitoring and decision support system which is developed as a part of the IST-027074 SAPHIRE project funded by the European Commission.

The number of patients that are waiting for heart transplants far exceed the number of available donor hearts. Left Ventricular Assist Devices are mechanical alternatives that can help and are helping several patients. They work by taking blood from the left ventricle and ejecting that blood into the aorta. In the University of Louisville they are developing a similar device that will take the blood from the aorta instead of the ventricle. This new device is called an Artificial Vasculature Device. In this thesis the arterial system and AVD are modeled and a simple control algorithm for the AVD proposed.

The arteries are modeled as a tube with linear resistance and inertia followed by a chamber with linear compliance and last a tube with linear resistance. The model is identical to the 4-element Windkessel model. The values for the resistances, inertia and compliance are identified using pressure and flow measurements from the ventricle and aortic root from a healthy patient. In addition to the Windkessel model the aortic valve is also modeled. The valve is modeled as a drum that closes the aorta and the parameters identified like before. The measurements are also used to model the left ventricle by assuming it has a constant compliance profile.

The AVD is modeled using common modeling structures for servo motors and simple structures for tubes and pistons. The values for the AVD could not be measured and identified so they are fetched from preliminary motor and part specifications.

The control algorithm for the AVD uses a wanted load to create a reference aortic flow. This wanted aortic flow is then achieved by using a PI controller. With these models and controller the interaction between the arterial system and AVD is investigated.

With this preliminary understanding of the interaction further research can be made in the future to improve the understanding and improve the AVD itself.

In this report a new automated optical test for next generation of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) is provided by the test-bed design and assessment. After a briefly analysis of critical problems of actual optical tests, the main test features are defined: automation and flexibility, relaxed alignment procedure, speed up of entire test and data reliability. After studying varied solutions, the test-bed components are defined to be lens array, photo-detector array, and software controller. Each device is studied and calibrated, the spatial resolution, and reliability against interference at the photo-detector array are studied. The software is programmed in order to manage both PIC input, and photo-detector array output as well as data analysis. The test is validated by analysing state-of-art 16 ports PIC: the waveguide location, current versus power, and time-spatial power distribution are measured as well as the optical continuity of an entire path of PIC. Complexity, alignment tolerance, time of measurement are also discussed.

Його статичні характеристиски, а саме осьова сила і витрати, залежать від геометрії даного вузла. При цьому вивчається залежність цих характеристик від величини торцевого зазору. Як показано в роботі дані характеристики також залежать від геометрії вхідної кромки даного дроселю, що є випадковою величиною. В роботі проведено аналіз впливу саме цього фактру на статичні характеристики гідроп’яти.

Just think of the market of all electronic devices, every 6 months or less, comes out a new, more powerful model with new functions and able to satisfy the needs of the consumer more and more fully. This thesis addresses the evolution of technology as regards one of the many factors affecting electronics, that is, the construction of electronic cards with certain tolerances, made by their ohmic and functional calibration. In particular, it will be analyzed, studied and modernized, a system that allows the calibration of electronic components by the use of lasers and other devices. This thesis aims to propose multiple methods for performing a hardware-in-the-loop simulation, providing the hardware and software tools necessary for design and execution. For this purpose, methods of modeling commonly encountered dynamical system components are explored and techniques suitable for calculating the states of the modeled system are presented. Modules and subsystems that enable the realization of a hardware-in-the-loop simulation application and its interfacing with external controller hardware are explained. The thesis also presents three different simulation scenarios. Solutions suitable for these scenarios are provided along with their implementations. The details and specifications of the developed software packages and hardware platforms are given. The provided results illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of the approaches used in these solutions.

Merlin.net Patient Care Network is a St. Jude Medical product that is used for remote patient management. The basic concept of Merlin.net is to allow the physician to view patient device follow-up information as well as general patient and device information on a web application. The Merlin.net system also interfaces with the patient and will send them notification if they miss a follow-up. All device information will be collected automatically while the patient is sleeping. This information is sent through a telephone line to a Merlin.net server to process a report package and display the collected information on the Merlin.net web application. The Merlin.net verification team ensures that all reports generated by the Merlin.net servers are processed and outputted correctly. There are currently 296 device parameters supported by Merlin.net, and the manual extraction and comparison of the expected parameter values takes several hours for each patient follow-up session. Currently there are 250 patient follow-up sessions used for verification testing. Each new release will continue to create additional patient follow-up sessions. Merlin.net releases are approximately 6 months apart, and each new release adds approximately 30-50 new patient follow-up records to support the new devices. In order to meet aggressive project deadlines, while ensuring that the Merlin.net system is processing and outputting patient follow-up data correctly, it is necessary to come up with an automated process to verify the contents of the processed data is correct. This will save a tremendous amount of time as well as improve on the quality of the verification process by eliminating human error and rework. It is critical for patient safety that the patient device follow-up information is processed and outputted correctly. In this thesis an automated process was developed to verify the correct content of the Merlin.net server generated reports for each patient follow-up session. This process leveraged different tools and scripting languages to achieve automation. TDE (Test Development Environment) tool was used to extract the device parameters from the patient follow-up sessions. The TDE script was written to extracts the desired parameter values from the patient follow-up session and automatically populates parameters in a device parameters spreadsheet. Once all the device parameter values are extracted in the spreadsheet, they are passed through a set of mapping rules, which form the expected values. The mapping rules were implemented as VBA (Visual Basic for Application) macros, one macro for each report. The VBA macros write the expected values back to the spreadsheet to form an “expected values spreadsheet”. The patient follow-up session is then sent to the Merlin.net server to process, which generates a processed patient follow-up session that contains a reports package in .zip format. A perl script was then written to compare the parameter values in the Merlinet.net generated reports with the corresponding expected values from the expected values spreadsheet. The perl script generates a comparison report displaying the discrepancies between the actual and the expected values.

Розроблено структурні та принципові схеми автоматичного пристрою контролю в’язкості діелектричних рідин на основі МЕФП зі слідкуючим та розгортальним зрівноваженням. Наведено результати досліджень статичних і динамічних характеристик мікропроцесорного пристрою контролю в’язкості, алгоритм і програмне забезпечення процесу вимірювання в’язкості діелектричних рідин.
Dissertation is devoted to decision of scientific and technical task of creation of new method and device on the basis of bridge electrofluid transfonners for control of viscosity of dielectric liquids. The developed control method is based on conformities to the law of flow of liquid through bridge choke transformer with subsequent his balancing by electrofluid transformers. The charts of the balanced bridge of electrofluid transformers (BEFT) are synthesized, static descriptions of transformation are certain and tire method of calculation of pickoffs of BEFT is resulted. The structure and principle diagrams of automatic control device of viscosity of oil products are developed on the basis of BEFT with the tracker and developing balancing. The results of researches of static and dynamic descriptions of microprocessor device of control of viscosity, algorithm and software of process of control of viscosity of oil products software, are resulted.

Our developed societies have experienced lately the invasion of mobile devices in people's lives. Smartphones, tablets and wearables are embedded in our personal and professional routines. The various smartphone applications take advantage of these devices' increased capabilities and assist users to communicate with other people, entertain themselves and complete several other tasks. These applications store a significant amount of information in the device's internal memory. These data can be used as evidence in court. Hence, the need for their extraction, analysis, presentation and preservation has established the Digital Forensics Community. The findings of this thesis can be helpful to Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA) and forensic analysts during triage and analysis assisting them to efficiently extract and visualise underlying patterns of the data. This thesis proposes concepts towards the direction of automating specific tasks related to forensic analyses on mobile devices. The basic theme of this thesis is the analysis of high level non-volatile data that exist in the internal memory of mobile devices. Thus, it studies three major categories of data (text, multimedia and social network relationships) proposing concepts towards content analysis automation. Therefore, it proposes a framework to assist forensic analysts to extract data from devices running the Android OS in a forensically sound fashion. Furthermore, it analyses human factors that dictate biased behaviour when users form graphical passwords in order to investigate if lightweight methodologies can bypass user authentication schemes such as the Android pattern lock screen. In addition, it investigates if text-mining tasks can be performed on short texts with a special focus on SMS sentiment analysis. Moreover, social network analysis tools are implemented aiming to depict relationships among the people that interact with the user of the device. Finally, the performance of a steganalysis tool is evaluated and a framework to describe and visualise data sharing and distribution among applications is proposed.

Configuring typical devices in the telemetry community requires the creation of complex, device-specific configuration files. While the grammar of the configuration files is vendor neutral, the device specific details are vendor specific. Thus, a naïve approach to building these files is to construct a file, test it against a device, and then iterate. The specification sheets (and other documents) for the device can serve as a guide, but the details of flight test configuration possibilities are immense and, in this community, typically not fully documented. This paper describes a process of creating a set of general rules describing characteristics of a configuration file and using those rules to discover the configuration constraints of telemetry devices automatically. The discovered constraints posed by a particular vendor’s device can then be quickly formed into a correct-by-construction constraint-based grammar for use in other systems.

Во многих отраслях промышленности, где перекачиваются среды повышенной агрессивности, с наличием твёрдых взвесей, требования, предъявляемые к конструкции насосного оборудования в значительной мере специфичны: от насоса требуется, прежде всего, долговечность и надёжность работы, простота и дешевизна конструкции. В многоступенчатых центробежных насосах с автоматическими разгрузочными устройствами, которые нашли широкое применение в химической и угледобывающей промышленности, наблюдаются повышенные осевые вибрации ротора, которые являются результатом резонанса в системе «ротор-гидропята», либо самовозбуждающихся колебаний из-за потери системой динамической устойчивости. Следовательно, определение амплитудно-частотных и переходных характеристик системы уравновешивания и проверка её динамической устойчивости имеют немаловажное значение для обеспечения надёжности насоса.
Отримані результати статичного розрахунку дозволяють на стадії проектування обирати основні геометричні параметри системи у такий спосіб, щоб у заданому діапазоні зміни осьової сили торцевий зазор і витоки не перевищували допустимі межі. Результати динамічного розрахунку дозволяють обирати співвідношення фізичних і геометричних параметрів, виходячи із забезпечення якості перехідних процесів і умов стійкості системи. An ingestible, electromechanical capsule was designed to collect physical samples from the lumen of the human gastrointestinal tract with the aims of being able to better localize the source of gastrointestinal ailments, explore the microbiome, and monitor metabolic processes. A complete prototype was developed encompassing hardware, custom electronics, firmware and a novel sampling mechanism leveraging the cylindrical shape of the device. The prototype was assessed for its ability to collect samples and maintain their integrity; withstand the environmental conditions and forces associated with normal clinical use; and for its ability to transit safely through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The device was able to collect heterogeneous samples from an ex-vivo porcine intestine and maintain average sample cross-contamination of 7.58% over a 12 hour period at 37°C. The device was demonstrated to be an effective and non-invasive means to study the physiology of the GI tract and serve as a platform for further development in personalized medicine, drug delivery and GI intervention.
Une capsule électromécanique ingérable a été conçue pour recueillir des échantillons physiques du tractus gastro-intestinal humain dans le but de mieux localiser la source des malaises gastro-intestinaux, d'explorer le microbiome et de surveiller les processus métaboliques. Un prototype complet a été développé incluant matériel, électronique sur mesure, logiciel et un mécanisme d'échantillonnage novateur tirant parti de la forme cylindrique de l'appareil. Des tests ont été effectués afin d'évaluer la capacité du prototype à prélever des échantillons et maintenir leur intégrité, supporter les conditions environnementales et les forces associées à l'utilisation clinique normale, et transiter en toute sécurité à travers le tractus gastro-intestinal. La contamination croisée a été plafonnée à 7.58% sur une période de 12 heures à 37 ° C. Et l'appareil était capable de prélever des échantillons hétérogènes. Il a été démontré que ce dispositif est un moyen efficace et non-invasif pour étudier la physiologie du tractus gastro-intestinal et servir de plate-forme pour le développement futur de la médecine personnalisée, l'administration de médicaments et d'intervention GI.

Today, the so-called ping-pong is from the traditional tennis, originated in the late 19th century England, due to the space and weather restrictions, this exercise is moving from outdoor into indoors, and uses the table as a venue, then, slowly transfer into the current ping-pong. In 1998, the Summer Olympus Games make the exercise as an official item in the game; hence, it becomes a popular sport in the world. To watch the ping-pong game closely, we find that all of the score is manually determine by referees, if the player hits a high tough shot, then the score is very difficult to decide, hence, it often cause a competition dispute. According to the mentioned above, the paper design an intelligent scoring system, Firstly, set up the optical sensor on the table tennis to detect the location of the ball. Secondly, vibration sensor in tennis net is established to judge the ball touches the net or not. Finally, use LED panel to display the moving of track for the ball and calculate the score. After the system is developed, it not only can help to get the correct score, but also can let audience watch more clearly live games.

With the evolution of medicine and associated sciences, humans have been improving the quality of life and extending it beyond expectations. One of the expressions of the development is the periodic intake of medicine, usually through a form of pills. This is more frequent with the ageing of the population. Non-adherence of prescribed medication is the problem caused by the failure of following thoroughly the prescription. It can have many reasons and the consequences can be dire. The project “Automatic pills dispenser device - SelfMed’’ aims to provide a solution for that problem. The answer is an automatic and smart pill dispenser device, capable of storing medication necessary for a month. This solution is focused on the elder population due to fact they are more prone to polypharmacy and the repercussion of non-adherence to them can be more devastating. This work is in the scope of the SelfMed project and intends to implement the first phase of the smart pill dispenser device. This will include the assembly of the hardware, the programming of the software and testing. However, before that, a background search will be made, to verify the non-adherence influence in the European Union (EU) population and the costs it brings to the citizens. Also there will be a testing of both software and hardware. In the end there will be a conclusion and indication of paths for the future. Part of the equipment, material and software developed during this work will not be presented due to the confidentiality issues.
Com a evolução da medicina e ciências associadas, o ser humano vem melhorando a qualidade de vida e estendendo-a além das expectativas. Uma das expressões do desenvolvimento é a ingestão periódica de medicamentos, geralmente na forma de comprimidos. Isso é mais frequente com o envelhecimento da população. A não adesão ao medicamento prescrito é o problema causado pelo não cumprimento integral da prescrição. Pode ter muitos motivos e as consequências podem ser terríveis. O projeto “Automatic pills dispenser device - SelfMed’’ tem o objetivo de fornecer uma solução para esse problema. A solução é um dispensador automático e inteligente de comprimidos, capaz de armazenar medicamentos necessários por um mês. Essa solução é voltada para a população idosa por serem mais propensos à polifarmácia e a repercussão da não adesão aos mesmos pode ser mais devastadora. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido no âmbito do projeto SelfMed e tem como objetivo a implementação da primeira fase do dispensador de medicamentos inteligente. Isso incluirá a montagem do hardware, a programação do software e os testes. No entanto, antes disso, será feita uma pesquisa de antecedentes, para verificar a influência da não adesão na população da União Europeia (UE) e os custos que acarreta para os cidadãos. Também haverá um teste de software e hardware. No final, há uma conclusão e indicação de caminhos para o futuro. Os materiais desenvolvidos durante este trabalho não serão apresentados por questões de confidencialidade.

The MOSFET is the building block of ULSI circuits in microprocessor and dynamics memories. In order to increase the packing density and to improve circuit performance, many researchers have invested their efforts in scaling down the CMOS device size. However, simply reducing device dimension without paying attention to other processing parameters will cause a variety of non-ideal characteristic. In CMOS technology, channel length is a key parameter used for device design and circuit simulation. Though many methods have been proposed for the extraction of effective channel length. Most of them are based on I-V measurement and some others are based on C-V measurement. But they are all failed as the generation goes down to quarter micron or beyond. In this thesis we proposed a new approach for extracting advanced CMOS device parameters by using a modified C-V method, named capacitance-ratio method (C-R method). According to the C-R method, we could determine the effective channel length , metallurgical channel length , process bias , extension overlap bias , source-to-drain series resistance , and the gate to drain capacitance easily. By the algorithm of C-R method, we want to develop an automatic measurement system to help extracting these parameters. With the help of automatic measurement system, one can easily extract parameters and monitor fabrication process. The greatest worth of the system is able to get reasonable and consistent results, besides the cost and time in measurement will be lower in future application. Finally, We show the ease of using our system to extract thin gate oxide parameter.

Population ageing is of significant impact on the demand of aged care devices and services in the coming decades. On the other hand, while the supply of aged care becomes more heterogeneous, there are still no suitable oral cleaning devices for people with upper limb disability. The purpose of this research is to develop an automatic electric toothbrush to assist caretakers in providing teeth cleaning services for the disabled. This thesis demonstrates the design method where the development relied on CAD design technologies and rapid prototyping to accelerate the procedure. The proposed electric toothbrush is able to clean all teeth in upper or lower jaw at one time. To investigate the performance of the electric toothbrush, we apply digital image processing techniques for quantitative analysis. Experimental results show that the electric toothbrush is able to achieve 87 % removing of contaminated area in 75 seconds.

When the recyclable resources are put into the resource recycling device through the inlet hole, the identification system will decide whether it is metal resource or not, and the controller will start the classification mechanism and accordingly put it into metal or non-metal blocks. That resource recycling device with automatic classification mechanism is comprised of a simple traditional resource recycling device with can body, two-blocks drawer, controller, classification mechanism, and recyclable resources identification system, which will achieve a convenient and low-cost recyclable resources automatic classification mechanism.

With the thriving of micro-displacement technology and the industrial development, the demand for PZT actuator continues to pyramid. Piezoelectric actuators are usually artificial manipulated. And there is no standard for calibration. Because of human-made error and low efficiency, providing an automatic calibration equipment becomes an important issue. According previous research of measurement system, the study develops an automatic calibration system of micro-displacement device with International standard. It could not only solve the previous problems of signal and mechanism but also eliminates the risk of human error. Users can enter the number of sampling points and the measurement times, and then get the calibration parameter values simply. Therefore, we can promote efficiency, convenience and precision by using this system.

While highly attention is on the environment protection issue, large power generating systems utilizing the wind power, solar energy, and tide power have been developed . However, it is expensive for such systems to be built. But the population living in metropolis area are increasing. Hence the need for electric energy is increasing too. Therefore, small portable greener electricity power generating systems are necessary for supplying high populated area and the area lacking infrastructure. The electric generating device, a small electric generator built on a man powered bicycle, is designed according to the green environment protection codes. However, recent reports indicate that the deficient capacity of batteries and slow charging rate are encountered. An electric generator attached on a general man powered bicycle is proposed in this study. While the bicycle is running, the electric generator generates electricity and charges the battery. That is, the man powered energy is converted to electric energy. In the need of a electrical assisted vehicle, this study is focused on the properties of the output of the generator. Furthermore, an optimal gear ratio and a better control unit are to be found. The output voltage and current are measured in different speeds and loadings. With the study, an efficient power supply system is to be found.

During cycling, cyclists may shift gears to obtain different gear-ratio and cadence in order to satisfy their requirements such as for the highest power output or the best comfort. However, it is not easy for those inexperienced riders to obtain the optimal cadence because they can not judge the moment to shift gears. They can not make use of the derailleur system in the correct way as well. As a result, they may feel uncomfortable, and even get hurt. Therefore, we need an automatic shift control device to avoid such situation. There are bicycles with automatic shift control device available, but most of them are not suitable for all the cyclists due to the lack of learning ability. This paper presents an automatic shift control device with learning ability. The MCU records the pedaling cadence during cycling, and then develops the strategy about the correct up-shifting or down-shifting moment. The MCU also commands the actuators to shift up or shift down a gear according to the strategy. Finally, the automatic shift control device can help cyclists to pedal at the optimal cadence.

Air spring is known as a multi-purpose component which is with the features of cushion, anti-shock or lifting functions. It has been widely used in automobile industries as for the function of shock absorber in overseas market. And its manufacturing technology has been developed perfectly also. But it virtually is just at the very beginning stage for the time being in domestic market. In other words, there are still lots of obstacles of the manufacturing technologies left for us to overcome or making a breakthrough with. The topical subject of this paper is about developing a set of assembling device which is needed for installing a fixing collar onto the top of the air spring. So as to reduce the manufacturing defective rate of the air spring and it truly promotes the product quality and the production efficiency consequently. The air spring assembling device, which has been developed for this research, is designed to be with a manual feeding and unloading mechanism. But as for another manufacturing processes such as positioning, clamping, or extruding, etc. are done at one time automatically. The entire set of the assembling device is designed to be with a pneumatic positioning, and a hydraulic extruding mechanism for the collar installation. The sequence of the manufacturing processes can be monitored by a programmable logic controller (PLC) along with electric control operating eventually. The air spring is really to be assembled by the assembling device, the pressure testing result to see through the pressure experiment we have done, the best operation condition of air spring assembling device when the specifications of six circular array hydraulic cylinder are requested for the positioning extrusion ring at ø64 mm and the extrusion force at 130 kgf/cm2.owing to the air spring assembling device which has been developed in this paper, the air spring production efficiency can be promoted up about 20-30 % comparing to before. And the manufacturing defective rate of it will go down to be below 0.2%. Besides of that, the manufacturing man power needed can be reduced for around 1-2 persons. On the other hands, the product quality will be promoted a lot apparently.

The purpose of this thesis is to make the heavy machine platform fixed on the ground. Under normal operation, it will not cause unevenness due to the looseness of the components of the machine or heavy pressure on the floor, affecting the four orientations of the fixed position of the machine without level, resulting in influence. The quality of the machine is unstable. Therefore, this paper designs a platform device with automatic detection and adjustment of vibration noise in four directions when the audio sensor and the gyroscope are integrated into the machine. The frame body is provided with a platform on the upper side of the frame by using the average distribution of the numerical control adjusting unit, and an audio sensor is installed on each side of the platform, and then connected with the controller to maintain stable balance and control production when the machine is in operation. quality.

Based on the tea making culture in Taiwan and the components of coffee machines, it is tried to develop an automatic device suitable for characteristic tea. This study used some simple components to design the tea maker controllers and focused on the development and testing of controllers. A single chip microprocessor has been applied to the key part of control system along with a voltage type temperature sensor measuring temperature. Then, the Celsius degree data are obtained from output voltage by analog to digital converter of microprocessor. Three important parameters were derived: Kp, Ki, and Kd in PID control by using Ziegler-Nichols rule which are substitution for error mathematical function. 6 heating modes were designed to fit 6 characteristic teas(Green tea, Long Jing Tea, Wun Shan Paochong tea, Tieh Kuan Yin tea, White-tip Oolong tea, Black tea)in main control program. This system shows the immediate temperature by seven-segment display. Liquid Crystal Display and buttons are provided for heating modes. It has been proven that the circuit of this system is precise and control process is stable. Experimental results have shown that the precision of constant temperature is within ±2℃ no matter heating or cooling.

When building web applications for use on different devices, developers need to deal with a wide range of input/output capabilities that affect how users interact with the application: A dialog that can be completed in one step on a desktop client may have to be broken up into a number of steps on a small-screen mobile device. Since it is time-consuming to define all the possible dialog masks and dialog flow variants for different channels manually, it would be desirable to automate the adaptation of dialog masks and flows. To address this need, we introduce the DiaDef language for the abstract, device-independent definition of the widgets in a dialog, and the DiaGen framework that automatically breaks this abstract dialog definition down into sufficiently small dialog masks for the users’ mobile devices and incorporates them into suitable micro dialog flows that are generated at run-time in order to be handled by our Dialog Control Framework.
