Повний текст джерелаWe tried in this work to deal with the problem of the expression of the self, in a period where lots of new experiences of personal writings were explored, even if autobiography did obviously not exist with its modern meaning. In the first part, we define the letter as a genre, examining its specific enonciative features. The second part tackles the problem of the political narration in the letters, in order to understand how and on which purpose the privatus and the familiaris show the public man. The third part tries to understand what kind of relationship an individual of this period can have with himself : as a matter of fact, writing letters is a way of trying to know one-self and seeking a kind of freedom in a period where this term, - we are at the end of the Republic -, has acquired new significations

Повний текст джерелаThis work deals with the influence of Euripides over the greek authors - poets and writers - of the Hellenistic era and the High Empire. In the first section, we examine the literary motives (expressive and thematic) borrowed from Euripides by three poets, Sositheus, Theocritus and Apollonius of Rhodes, representing very clearly three kinds of literature : the drama, the epic poetry and the idyll. In the second section, we analyse on the one hand the judgement throughout the whole literary work of Euripides by Longinus, Dio Chrysostom, Plutarch of Chaironeia and Lucian of Samosata ; on the other hand we deal with the distribution and the manipulation of references to the poet into the same writers : by projecting certain reflections of Euripides' theatre over different aspects of human life, they enlighten moral and political values. However, Plutarch does not deny the qualities of artistic creation of dramatizing, as the power of the tragic images. Lucian is distinguished by his choice to exploit the Euripides' references in a comic text of a parodic aim

Повний текст джерелаThis work is an essay of characterization and classification of the deposits of objects put down in graves and aims at understanding their evolution between the end of the 3rd century BC and the 3rd quarter of Ist century AD. The study concern 1181 graves, coming from 10 cemeteries of the territory of Treviri. The report counts four parts. The first part sums up studies about funeral deposits (especially about metallic objects in graves) and explains the developed methodological approach : a functional approach of objects integrated into a multidimensional statistical treatment (ACP). The second part proposes a classification of graves according to their associations of objects and analyze their chronological evolution. An hypothesis of hierachical reading is proposed for the different objects and the groups they characterized. The third part analyzes the evolution of funeral deposits inside each cemeteries. The fourth part synthetizes all the phenomena observed and tries to propose an interpreted reading. So funeral deposits are the reflection of ritual practices testifying of a big stability during all the studied period. They are also the reflection of a social history. This history testifies of an internal evolution of the Treviri society, driving to the recognition of craftsmen in the augustean period, according to a process begun during LT D1 and precipitated by the war. This history testifies also of the economic boom of the big towns thanks to the Roman presence

Повний текст джерелаOur approach, inspired by the anthropological studies of ancient Greece, is conducted along two mains lines. As a first step, we attempt to examine the specific patterns of filiation delineated by the tragics : firstly, through Oedipus' sons, whose suicidal twinship repeats their father's duality. Then, through Orestes who, in Aeschylus' and Euripides' plays, appears as a mimetic son doomed to a loss of self. Finally, through Euripides' Hippolytus and Hyllus in the trachiniae, paralysed sons who are denied harmonious access to adulthood. Our second direction of research leads us to study the process of "entrapment" which seems to govern the characters' way of relating to their own speech; we use the polysemy of the terms akin to philos as an example allowing us to establish a parallel between the son figures and some female characters participating in their destiny and debates : thus, in the first chapter, we re-examine the tragedies devoted to Orestes, from Aeschylus to Euripides, showing how this conflicting polysemy reveals the tensions between family and elective ties. In the second chapter, Antigone embodies, in the Oedipus coloneus as well, the labdacides' tendency to revert to the origin regardless of the law of reproduction inherent in civic life. Lastly, the third chapter is devoted to Medea, who can only realize herself by consummating her refusal of marriage, and yearning for the paternal home through murdering her sons. In the conclusion, we propose to show that tragic philia is a kind of antidote to "proper" civic filiation-reproduction, and we expose the issue of the effect produced on the citizenspectator of Athens by this projection of the fundamentals of his own condition

Повний текст джерелаThe plateau of Giza is one of the most famous, if not most well-known, sites of Egypt, not far from Cairo. The history of the site is linked with the beginnings of the history of Egypt and the first dynasties. It will last, almost without any gap, until the Greco-Roman period. The pyramids of the IVth dynasty, erected by Khufu, Khephren and Mykerinos and the great sphinx, appear obviously as the most striking features of the site. Nevertheless its life will survive for two other millenniums after the end of the old kingdom. New cults appeared. The worshipping of Harmachis, as the Egyptians called the great sphinx, and his pilgrimage began during the 18th dynasty and lasted during the first millennium. At that time, the devotion to Isis was increasing; the goddess was known as the "mistress of the pyramids" who protected the whole site. The funerary chapel of the southern subsidiary pyramid, east of Khufu's pyramid, was restored and enlarged to be used as a cult chapel for Isis. Inscriptions and artefacts, stelae, statues, etc. Have been left by the priests and the worshippers of the goddess. A good part of them have not been published before. Owing to these new data, it has been possible to reconstruct the history of the site

Повний текст джерелаThe strait of Gibraltar, channel between two continents, narrow corridor between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, is a pivotal geographic feature. It has played a key role in the history of the neighbouring areas since the beginning of the Ancient World. It therefore deserves to be studied in and for itself. Indeed, its narrowness allowed repeated contacts between populations from both sides of the Mediterranean Sea since the Chalcolithic. More than a border, Gibraltar is a bridge that links the two shores of the Mediterranean Sea and an unavoidable gateway to the Atlantic Ocean. The existence of this strait, with its routes, harbors and currents, contributed to the shape of a specific area that influenced two vast hinterlands: the South of the Iberian Peninsula and the North of the western Maghreb. Rome was present in those regions since the end of the 1st century B. C. And gradually imposed a new political structure, that of a large Italy-centered empire, to this Iberian-Mauritanian area. The new political and military structures had to allow the integration of southern Hispania and Mauritania into a Mediterranean unity

A análise pondera também outros textos do autor, cujas obras são manifestamente metaficcionais, e abarca igualmente textos de literatura inglesa. O âmago dos assuntos aqui referidos prende-se com a intertextualidade, o hibridismo e a fluidez da escrita, incita debates sobre a ética das humanidades, e discussões literárias sobre o sentido de humanidade. Os temas romanceados em Elizabeth Costello constituem um todo devido ao papel predominante que a protagonista desempenha nas prelecções narrativas deste romance. ABSTRACT: This Dissertation is centred on the study of issues of textuality, authorship and self-examination raised in J. M. Coetzee’s novel Elizabeth Costello. This analysis also traces back to other novels by Coetzee which are overtly metafictional, and to other literary works in English. At the core of these discussions are intertextuality, the hybridity and fluidity of novel writing, ethical debates about the humanities, and literary incursions into the meaning of humanity. The questions broached in Elizabeth Costello all coalesce due to the protagonist’s predominant role in the lecture-narrative structure of the novel.

A detailed examination of the esthetics of the poems, of their disposition in the books and collections, of the schemes they elaborate, of the progression they create, leads to the thesis that the conception of the global structure of a collection is essential in the latin neoterics and elegiacists' work ; it can even be noticed in the poems themselves, since some of them have clearly been especially written to respond to other ones in a detailed way. Each poet of our corpus (Catullus, Tibullus, Lygdamus, Sulpicia and Propertius) uses the arrangement of his own poetic materials to deliver a particular conception of the ideal design of a brief poems' collection, of the role and importance of brief poetry and of his own insertion in a certain poetic genealogy. Therefore, the present work shows how their respective manners progressively elaborate a whole conception of the birth, construction and development of latin elegy, as opposed to other brief genres

Повний текст джерелаThis doctoral thesis is dedicated to a manuscript belonging to the Berlin National Library : D-Bds Mus. Ms. Autogr. J. V. Meder 1. Although it is classified among highly valuable sources since 1850, this score of a St. Matthew Oratorio-Passion hasn't been the subject of any research yet. Though, the title page being lost, the composer as well as the composition place and date of the unique remaining source were unknown. Basing on the analysis of the source (paper, inks and handwritings), this thesis sets out how the three versions forming this manuscript have been updated. Considering that the Passion has been performed in Riga throughout the 18th century, the study of the historical context of the work in that city, revealed as the actual place of composition by the watermarks, allowed to determine the meaning of the apocryphal versions in comparison to the original one. Lastly, the analysis of the materials characteristics in the perspective of the sources of that time, as well as the dating of the chorals melodies in the manuscript, permitted the final identification of the Actus Musicus de Passione Jesu Christi, composed by Johann Valentin Meder in 1716. This research restores to favour a Passion that is wrongly identified and edited in current publications (MGG, New Grove or Das Chorwerk edition), making it therefore the prelude to a critical edition

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis proposes a study of the ancient and modern uses of a passage from the second Book of the Iliad, known since the 5th century before our era under the designation « Catalogue of Ships ». This passage became a sort of paradigm of a particular mode of utterance, the « catalogue mode of enunciation » (καταλέγειν), which great number of the modern studies had interpreted as an ideal way to describe the reality of the past in a discursive order closely related to the transmission of a « truth », or rather being in the origins of the writing of history. We assume that this reading had an impact on a number of modern studies and it is a consequence of them as well. Such impacts are far from being meaningless, once they had led to consider the catalogue as a document judged reliable to find the « Homeric Greece » and, who knows, to answer to other « Homeric questions». The status of « catalogue » in this passage nevertheless echoes the practice which, as other studies had shown, goes back not only to the diversity of the poetical production from the archaic period - including the Iliad where this practice presents itself as an original interlocution mode - but extends it far beyond. On turning towards some ancient uses of the speeches in catalogue, particularly the ones from the Catalogue of Ships, we aim to understand to what other functions (those being close or not from the ones identified by the modern texts) this enunciative practice answers and how they appear in the dialectic with the previous texts concerned and with their own issues

Technically, we will have more discussions with regards to how the three scholars manage to discard traditional meanings and thoughts over the issue while making their own interpretations based on varied contexts and reflecting on philosophical theories opposite the theories they proposed according to their individual cultural backgrounds: the unknown semantics of the sentence for Merleau-Ponty( evey word read is given its own semantics), Blanchot feel unfamiliar to the basic concept for allwords and sentences across the world is the very truth. Повний текст джерелаApollodorus’ Library, probably written during the 2nd or 3rd century A. D., aims at gathering Greek legends and myths in a coherent system based upon a genealogical structure. Its author bases his work on the most authoritative sources, including prestigious 5th-century mythographers as Pherecydes and Acusilaus, whose names are the most mentioned ones in Apollodorus’ treatise, along with Hesiod’s. This work analyses the links between those two ancient mythographers and the Library. It takes a close look at every mention of their name, and compares all their fragments to Apollodorus’ text, in order to understand how and why he cites them or not ; why he draws on them or chooses other sources ; what is their real influence on his treatise. This study also offers a reflection about the links between the Library and the ancient mythographical tradition as a genre, mainly on the basis of their respective style

In spite of the extremely deteriorated condition of the papyrus, nevertheless compensated by the draft editions transmitted by the current editor, Henry, and by the results of the bibliological research effectuated by White, a thematic interpretation of the manuel Peri Parrhêsias, On frankness, has been made possible, in such a way as to provide henceforth a basis to examine the role of parrhêsia in the Acts of the Apostles. When comparing the manner in which Luke employs parrhêsia with that of Philodemus, it is apparent that the first relies on the latter, all of the Philodemus themes being present in practically all of the Lucan pericopae. However, Luke adapts the parrhêsia to his own narrative project, all while giving it a strategic role in describing the expansion of the Gospel unto the end

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis proposes the hypothesis that Brazilian writer João Guimarães Rosa’s The Third Bank of the River and Other Stories [Primeiras estórias, 1962; English translation published in 1968] is the author’s arrival point after a strenuous path toward aesthetic expression. Such achievement may be partially explained by the support provided by the book’s epigraphic experience, and also by the use of characters who apparently have a secondary role but eventually spring to the narrative foreground as protagonists. The paratextual elements could be described as “narrative poems”, similar to the ones Rosa wrote for Magma [collected poetry, 1936], as well as “parallel essays”, in which Rosa experiments with the genre of the very short narrative, through the excision and framing of texts written by others or the creation of epigraphs signed by pseudonyms. Not all texts have epigraphs, in order to highlight the correspondence between the paratext, the protagonist and the theme. The narratives where the protagonists are children (who are considered as paradigmatic characters in that they allow us to better understand how families are configured) are placed at the beginning of the section without epigraphs. At the same time, both the epigraphs and the characters in the stories lead us to recognize the presence of an implied author, which is a confirmation of Rosa’s aesthetic choices, especially concerning his preference for the genre of the short narrative.

Повний текст джерелаStarting from the phokian national legend which consists in a cycle of tales reporting the wars of independence of the phokians against the thessalians in the archaic age, celebrated at the phokian federal sanctuary of artemis elaphebolos in hyampolis, it is shown that the greeks of the archaic and classical periods developped a complex and systematic thinking about exceptions to their own rules of hoplitic war. When wars of annihilation threatened the very existence of peoples and cities, artemis was called to instil the boldness and the courage to face the greatest risks, to inspire the devices to win these wars which transgress every admitted limit and to make civilization triumph where it seemed doomed to sink into wildness. The pondering of the greeks about the extreme forms of war is to be placed in the larger frame of a consideration on "extreme situations" by which the city, opposing the extreme radicalism of mystic trends like orphism which branded her as the absolute evil, endeavoured to explore and draw the limits of human condition at a distance of both the worst and the impossible best. Thus conceived, this whole work is intended as a contribution to the study of the relations between myth and history

Harlfinger's 1971 manuscripts review known to bear the treatise. Most of the time, in the edition the readings of the manuscripts were favoured to the editors' and commentators' emendations. The translation is as close as possible to the Greek text despite its very elliptical wording and its occasional defective syntax. Initialy, the commentary tries to set the background to this text (dating hypothesis in spite of attributing it to a precise and definite author) and to define the links which exist between the text and, on the one hand, the other Aristotelian treatises and, on the other hand, the philosophical works that are refuted. The commentary then helps to justify the editorial choices and translations in comparison to existing variants and corrections suggested by previous editors and commentators.The aim of the Περὶ ἀτόμων γραμμῶν is to prove the impossibility of indivisible lines. It belongs to a more general confutation of atomism in the Aristotelian school. Aristotle previously refuted the existence of atoms in the physical field, setting up a theory of continuity. The author of this treatise takes up the issue confronting it to geometrical objects. He proves impossible the indivisibility of a line or the fact that a line may be composed of indivisible elements. After having defined the point, he proves that a line can neither be composed of points. To conclude, the author draws the distinction between a limit and a joint

Повний текст джерелаModern historians admit that there was a great variety in the Greek world of the classical period in the way one lives one's religious life. Thus, studies on the Greek religion have focused much on particular religious facts: on religion at the level of cities, regions, or even on minority religious facts such as magic, orphism and pythagorism, or even on religion of individuals like Plato. The notion of a religious "norm" and, therefore, of what is not part of the norm, is also of interest, as is the notion of otherness. A study on religious differences and their appreciation in Greece in the classical period is conceived as an extension of these works, seeking in particular to create a link between them. The main question that is asked is that of the relationship with the other in religious matters. How did the Greeks think and behave when confronted with a different way of thinking and acting than their own in matters of religion? Were they indifferent, curious, interested, contemptuous, violent? We must also look for the causes of such attitudes: why did they think and act as they did? The study therefore focuses on many themes - from the religion of the Barbarians to that of the nearest neighbour, including that of the Greeks in other cities - from a particular angle. It is about studying the difference, the plurality of religious experiences and the encounter between different religious experiences, between different ways of thinking and practising religion. This amounts to analysing the friction between several religious systems, between several religious norms or between a minority or even individual religious phenomenon and the religious norm

The present study analyses the reception of Xenophon in Ælius Aristides’ speeches, which have never been explored from this perspective. The works taken into account are the Platonic speeches (or. 2-4), the speech Concerning a remark in passing (or. 28), the declamation On making peace with the Athenians (or. 8), the group of the five Leuctran orations (or. 11-15), the evidence of the lost declamation Callixenus, the Panathenaicus (or. 1) and the speech To Rome (or. 26). Greek history has a crucial importance in this investigation: Aristides was particularly concerned by the events following the battle of Leuctra. The examination of the historical allusions to Xenophon’s Hellenica reveals Aristides’ erudition and his interest in the speeches included in this work. Looking at Aristides’ use of Xenophon’s texts can contribute to improving the exegesis of the Aristidian works and open a new path into research on Xenophon’s reception

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis deals with the issue of the Arabic translation of the Greek Alexander Romance by Pseudo-Callisthenes. By a philological study of the various Greek recensions (α, β (L, λ), ε, γ) as well as numerous Arabic sources it will be shown how the Alexander Romance, as a special example of the Graeco-Arabic translation movement, was rendered into Arabic. Apart from the written tradition, either in the form of a translation from the Greek or a paraphrase, the oral tradition based on Surah 18 of the Quran plays a central role. The influence of not just one but several recensions (α, β, ε, γ) of the Greek Alexander Romance can be traced in various Arabic sources. Especially the Byzantine β-recension must have played an important part in the East. The aim of the dissertation is to give a detailed overview of those chapters of the Alexander Romance which have been received in the Orient in order to illustrate how ancient Greek literature made its way into the Islamic world

"In the Maze of Doubting": Author(ity) Problematized in J .M. Coetzee's Foe Abstract J. M. Coetzee's Foe presents itself as a self-conscious postmodern fiction. It uses Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe as its framework and demonstrates the art of writing by furnishing flesh and blood to the bare story line of the island story. In the process of writing, the original nameless Susan Barton, the protagonist narrator, "I," first (re-)tells the island story as envisioned by Coetzee but later the narrator becomes more and more ambitious and deviant. She begins to tell a story of her own. She gives herself another identity as Susan Barton, re-considers Coetzee's island story, and even re-writes it to suit her own ends. Despite so, the author's authority over his fictional world does not henceforth entirely fall in the hand of the seemingly autonomous character. Even though the author may temporarily get lost in his writing, (in this case, his imaginary character begins to take charge), he is still the authority who dominates all. For, after all, the very existence of the fictional character is dependent on the author's imagination and writing. This thesis examines therefore the tension between the actual author and his imaginary character presented in Foe. To do so, I will first explore the intertexuality between Foe and its Ur-text, Robinson Crusoe, and then set Foe as a battleground for Coetzee and his fictional character to wrestle for authority over the story. At the beginning, Coetzee's fictional puppet mouthpiece, "I" (Susan Barton), counteracts the actual author's authority and rewrites her story. Later, Coetzee manipulates his power as the real author to retrieve his seemly lost authority. The confrontation between Coetzee and his fictional character is re-presented as Coetzee's problem in writing his novel. Susan Barton's deviation calls into question Coetzee's authority. It seems that the author is dead, or has been disconnected from his literary works; that is, Coetzee, the father's creating pen(is) ( namely, authority over his creation) has been castrated. Accordingly, as long as the author continues writing, his writing forever offers an arena for himself and his created character to compete for authority over the writing.
