Burnout is a common occurrence for many healthcare social workers, though little academic literature addresses the impacts of the organizational environment on burnout among healthcare social workers. The purpose of this correlational study was to evaluate what organizational factors predict burnout in the healthcare environment while considering sociodemographic and organizational factors. An adaptation of Maslach's multidimensional theory of burnout served as the framework for this study. Surveys were distributed to members of the National Association of Social Workers who are employed in healthcare environments, resulting in a sample size of 237 useable responses. A multiple linear regression statistical analysis indicated that workload, reward, values, and level of care predicted emotional exhaustion, and therefore the potential for burnout (p < .001). Findings were consistent with the theoretical framework employed. Policy implications include the need for healthcare environments to develop standard operating procedures to address organizational barriers for social workers that contribute to social workers burnout. Implications for social change include an identified need to address burnout through healthcare organizations, professional associations, and academia using education, intervention, and policy.

This nationwide mixed method study explored early career social work experiences of the first year of practice. Questionnaire data identified the scope of organisational support provided in government and non-government health settings. Qualitative information from semi-structured interviews provided insight into the ways in which the development of professional identity in the first year of practice and its relationship with professional capital holds implications for resilience in sustaining practice in the Australian health sector.

This thesis explores the neglected history of Australian Catholic social welfare, focusing on the period, 1920-85. Central to this study is a comparative analysis of diocesan welfare bureaux (Centacare), especially the Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide agencies. Starting with the origins of professional welfare at local levels, this thesis shows the growth in Catholic welfare services across Australia. The significant transition from voluntary to professional Catholic welfare in Australia is a key theme. Lay trained women inspired the transformation in the church???s welfare services. Prepared predominantly by their American training, these women devoted their lives to fostering social work in the Church and within the broader community. The women demonstrated vision and tenacity in introducing new policies and practices across the disparate and unco-ordinated Australian Catholic welfare sector. Their determination challenged the status quo, especially the church???s preference for institutionalisation of children, though they packaged their reforms with compassion and pragmatism. Trained social workers offered specialised guidance though such efforts were often not appreciated before the 1960s. New approaches to welfare and the co-ordination of services attracted varying degrees of resistance and opposition from traditional Catholic charity providers: religious orders and the voluntary-based St Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP). For much of the period under review diocesan bureaux experienced close scrutiny from their ordinaries (bishops), regular financial difficulties, and competition from other church-based charities for status and funding. Following the lead of lay women, clerics such as Bishop Algy Thomas, Monsignor Frank McCosker and Fr Peter Phibbs (Sydney); Bishop Eric Perkins (Melbourne), Frs Terry Holland and Luke Roberts (Adelaide), consolidated Catholic social welfare. For four decades an unprecedented Sydney-Melbourne partnership between McCosker and Perkins had a major impact on Catholic social policy, through peak bodies such as the National Catholic Welfare Committee and its successor the Australian Catholic Social Welfare Commission. The intersection between church and state is examined in terms of welfare policies and state aid for service delivery. Peak bodies secured state aid for the church???s welfare agencies, which, given insufficient church funding proved crucial by the mid 1980s.

This thesis is an ethnographic account of how people in a particular situation of bureaucratic domination developed tactics and adopted discourses to present themselves as active agents capable of mobilizing resources, individually and at a collective level. Specifically, it involves a description and analysis of power dynamics, experienced efficacy, and associated processes of defining self and others in the context of a newly forming injured workers support group in their relations with a Workers' Compensation Board. Appropriate to the study of an injured workers group, the thesis draws upon a body of literature which focuses on the everyday practices of people in concrete social contexts. James C. Scott's work on domination and resistance privides a primary framework for the study, elaborated by Michel De Certeau's concepts of 'strategy' and 'tactic' as well as Foucault's notion of 'carceral' networks. Among the main findings was the recognition of the extent to which individual group members engaged in creative, and often effective tactical acts of resistance against the WCB and yet also against their own formal association. Moreover, as the group appropriated elements of bureaucratic and trade union discourses it shifted toward also engaging in strategic social action. The thesis concludes with practical recommendations concerning the ways such associations are formed and operate, as well as policy options for workers' compensation boards in general.

This monographic study examines the life of the Australian artist Harry Reade (1927-1998), and his largely overlooked contribution to animation within historical, social, political and cultural contexts of his time. The project constitutes a biography of Reade, tracing his life from his birth in 1927 through to his period of involvement with animation between 1956 and 1969. The biography examines the forces that shaped Reade and the ways in which he tried to shape his world through the medium of animation. It chronicles his experiences as a child living in impoverished conditions during the Great Depression, his early working life, the influence of left wing ideology on his creative development, and his contribution to animation with the Waterside Workers' Federation Film Unit, in Sydney. The study especially focuses on the period between 1961 and 1969 during which Reade supported the Cuban Revolution's social and cultural reform process by writing and directing animated films at the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (Cuban Institute of the Art and Industry of Cinema - ICAIC), in Havana. The thesis argues that Reade played a significant role in the development of Cuban animation during the early years of the Cuban Revolution. Further, his animated work in this cultural sphere was informed by a network of political alliances and social philosophies that were directly linked to his experiences and creative development in Australia. Theoretical approaches to biographical method and animation studies have been used to provide a cohesive framework for an investigation of Reade's life and animation work. The thesis also draws on Reade's autobiography and his animated works, oral histories, newspaper articles, press cartoons, illustrations, photographs, and official government archival documents. This project also has an archival purpose in collecting and compiling Reade's animation work onto CD.

After the turmoil of the 1890s shearing contractors eliminated some of the frustration from shearers recruitment. At the same time closer settlement concentrated more sheep in small flocks in farming regions, replacing the huge leasehold pastoral empires which were at the cutting edge of wool expansion in the nineteenth century. Meanwhile the AWU succeeded in getting an award for the pastoral industry under the new arbitration legislation in 1907. Cultural and administrative influences, therefore, eased some of the bitter enmity which had made the annual shearing so unstable. Not all was plain sailing. A pattern of militancy re-emerged during World War I. Shearing shed unrest persisted throughout the interwar period and during World War II. In the 1930s a rival union with communist connections, the PWIU, was a major disruptive influence. Militancy was a factor in a major shearing strike in 1956, when the boom conditions of the early-1950s were beginning to fade. The economic system did not have satisfactory mechanisms to cope. Unionised shearers continued to be locked in a psyche of confrontation as wool profits eroded further in the 1970s. This ultimately led to the wide comb dispute, which occurred as wider pressures changed an economic order which had not been seriously challenged since Federation, and which the AWU had been instrumental in shaping. Shearing was always identified with bushworker ‘mateship’, but its larrikinism and irreverence to authority also fostered individualism, and an aggressive ‘moneymaking’ competitive culture. Early in the century, when old blade shearers resented the aggressive pursuit of tallies by fast men engaged by shearing contractors, tensions boiled over. While militants in the 1930s steered money-makers into collectivist versions of mateship, in the farming regions the culture of self-improvement drew others towards the shearing competitions taking root around agricultural show days. Others formed their own contracting firms and had no interest in confrontation with graziers. Late in the century New Zealanders arrived with combs an inch wider than those that had been standard for 70 years. It was the catalyst for the assertion of meritocracy over democracy, which had ruled since Federation.

The dissertation presents the argument that the formal training of a professional social worker is relevant but not equivalent to the training needs of a professional manager in the social work field. Social work professionals as managers do not, without management training, have the same credibility and/or skills as professional managers of social work. Within the general topic of welfare, research is first directed to the Australian welfare experience in its historic sense. Selecting relevant philosophical and ideological frameworks the writer a) critically explores traditional and contemporary theories, with special reference being made to bureaucracy, organization, and management; b) investigates theories and practices of social workers and social work managers to ascertain their relevance to contemporary Australian society, using the A.C.T. Family Services Branch as an example of a social welfare agency. This assists in explaining the context, functions and obligations of a welfare agency, as it responds to the needs of the community and of the staff it employs.

The purpose of this study is to examine child welfare workers' attitudes towards culturally diverse consumers. Social workers from four local foster family agencies were asked to complete a voluntary and anonymous questionaire. The survey also consisted of filling out the Multicultural Counseling Inventory (MCI) which, consisted of forty Likert type questions. The MCI served as an instrument scale to measure the workers' multicultural competencies.

At the intersection of adult education and social gerontology, and propelled by the ageing phenomenon, educational gerontology has a critical place in the study of older adult education. To contend with older learners' needs, professional adult educators require an enhanced preparation, and concomitance to a reinvigoration of current adult learning programs to include the constructs of educational gerontology and the geragogical imperative. Through survey and interviews, this research investigated evidence of, and the capacity for, Australian Adult Education programs and Ageing Research centres to meet this requirement. Results of this case study indicate a paucity of evidence of educational gerontology in adult education programs, coupled with significant potential for capacity development in this field through collaboration with Ageing Research initiatives. The findings suggest an expansion of current curriculum in adult education programs to include aspects of educational gerontology, professional development of Adult Education academics in the specialized area of educational gerontology, and broader adult education engagement with external stakeholders and the ageing research community as a contribution to social betterment.

For the past two decades there has been an ever expanding interest in the implications of spirituality and, or, religion within the professional practice of social work (Anderson and Angell, 1999; Bishop, Avila-Juarbe, & Thumme, 2003; Cornett, 1992; Northcut, 1999; Northcut, 2000; Praglin, 2004 ; Sheridan, Wilmer and Atcheson,1994). Increasingly, scholars and social workers alike have been considering the appropriateness of inclusion and the practical implications involved. This interest has developed to include attention to spirituality within varying ethical codes and definitions of social work. This is evident in international social work organisations such as the IFSW (International Federation of Social Workers) and IASSW (International Association of Schools of Social Work). Both have begun to include religious and, or, spiritual concerns into professional practice principles. In Aotearoa New Zealand the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers (ANZASW) is a member of these international bodies; thus the profession is bound to the above principles. Additionally, the Aotearoa New Zealand Social Workers Registration Board (SWRB) code of practice reflects the standards and ethical codes of the ANZASW. Moreover, spirituality and, or, religion is an important aspect for different client groups within the Aotearoa social services context. This is particularly so within bicultural frameworks. Despite this, little attention has been given to exploring how social workers and social service agencies in Aotearoa New Zealand integrate this aspect in their work with clients to meet the varying ethical requirements. Additionally, little investigation has been undertaken to explore the implications religion and, or, spirituality might have within the Aotearoa New Zealand Social Services context. To date a number of conversations have occurred with regard to spirituality and religious concerns for Tangata Whenua, and to a lesser degree Tagata Pasifika. This study seeks to address the paucity of information by undertaking a mixed methods investigation of the role religion and spirituality has within Aotearoa New Zealand social work.

This paper strives to answer a question most anyone remotely involved with education has encountered: what is the relationship between the content taught and its purpose? In this case, the question is in the context of the Workers’ Education Association in Sweden (ABF) and other educational efforts made by the Swedish labour movement. In order to answer such a question one must first outline in some detail what the content to be taught was, and what purpose the association itself saw as the important one. But the matter is also further explored: the Swedish labour movement appears to view education and culture in a rather non-Marxist manner, which poses a question to be untangled in order to fully understand the connection between content and purpose, namely that of what view they did in fact hold. Here, it will be argued that the Swedish labour movement held a proto-Bourdieuan view of culture as a form of societal and cultural capital which must be distributed in order for the emancipatory and egalitarian efforts to succeed.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, EMDR, is a new clinical treatment shown to be effective for victims of trauma. EMDR is a time efficient, comprehensive methodology backed by positive, controlled research, for the treatment of disturbing experiences that underlie many pathologies. An eight phase treatment approach that includes using eye movements or other left-right stimulation, EMDR helps victims of trauma reprocess disturbing thoughts and memories. The purpose of this research project was to describe and explore the utilization of EMDR by licensed clinical social workers who were registered as members of the National Association of Social Workers.

L’enjeu de cette recherche est de prolonger ces analyses, en démontrant que le modèle associationniste des buchéziens, développé dans la première moitié du XIXème siècle français, dépasse le strict cadre de la sphère de production. Au départ de ce travail réside ainsi l’hypothèse selon laquelle l’association ouvrière de production est constitutive d’un projet républicain au service d’une amélioration des conditions sociales du plus grand nombre. La singularité de ce modèle repose sur une répartition de la souveraineté économique et politique au sein d’une société civile structurée autour du système associatif. Ainsi, l’association ouvrière de production tient, à double titre, un rôle central dans la conception républicaine des buchéziens. En premier lieu, elle constitue le vecteur d’une construction de la République au niveau national : le système associatif ne se réduit pas à la résolution de la question sociale, il constitue également un espace de socialisation républicaine des travailleurs. L’association représente un lieu d’apprentissage des valeurs et des pratiques de la République. Cette dynamique est en second lieu au service de la formation d’un modèle républicain au sein duquel la société civile joue un rôle central : dans le système buchézien, l’État revêt certes une forme républicaine, mais le caractère républicain de la nation doit être également porté par la sphère économique, organisée autour de l’association ouvrière de production. Ainsi la République selon la doctrine buchézienne repose sur la construction d’une société civile structurée par des « petites républiques d’atelier », réalisant une citoyenneté à la fois dans la sphère politique et dans la sphère économique
Studies about Philippe Buchez and his followers’ doctrine mainly emphasized the research on workers productive association, understood as a way to organize industrial work and to redistribute property. The objective of this thesis is to extend the analysis, by demonstrating that the associationnist system theorized by Philippe Buchez and his followers in France during the first part of 19th century, goes beyond the will to organize the industrial field and to put an end to working class poverty. Our starting point for this research is the hypothesis that workers productive associations are part of a republican system, which is dedicated to the improvements of working class social conditions. The originality of this idea is that economical and political sovereignty is spread among civil society, which is structured by the associative system.Thus, workers productive associations play a major role in Buchezian conception of the Republic. Firstly, they represent a means for the construction of the Republic at the national level: productive associations are considered as spaces of republican socialisation for the working classes. They are a place for learning the practices and values of the Republic. Secondly, the associationnist system is in the service of the republican conception in which civil society plays an important role: according to the Buchezian model, both the State and the economical field, structured by productive association, have to carry republican values and apply democratic practices. Hence, according to the Buchezian doctrine, the Republic is based on civil society organized through “small workshop republics”, allowing the realization of citizenship in both political and economical fields

Syftet med denna studie är att kartlägga organisationskultur inom folkrörelseorganisationer samt att undersöka dess eventuella förändringar under påverkan av kulturpolitiken. Denna studie tillämpar Geert Hofstedes teorier som behandlar olika nivåer och dimensioner av organisationskultur. Studien behandlar värderingar, ritualer, hjältar och symboler inom varje organisation i fråga i ett sammanhang av organisatoriska praktiker som meningsbärande kulturella uttryck. Studien har genomförts med ett kvalitativt angreppssätt där semistrukturerade intervjuer utförts med hjälp av ett bekvämlighetsrvalsstrategi. Datainsamlingen har genomförts genom personliga intervjuer med fyra medarbetare på två folkrörelseorganisationer i Stockholm d.v.s. ABF och Riksteatern. De valda Organisationerna är verksamma inom olika verksamhetsområde och respondenterna har jobbat i varierande positioner och har fleråriga arbetserfarenheter. Intervjuerna spelades in efter beviljat tillstånd och säkerställandet av respondenternas anonymitet. En innehållsanalys genomfördes efter transkribering av inspelat material i form av citat och egna tolkningar. Studien behandlar också en del sekundärdata i form av historisk information om folkrörelsernas samhälleliga rötter och utvecklingsprocess. Studien visar en ständigt pågående omorganiseringsprocess inom folkrörelseorganisationer vilket orsakat signifikanta förändringar inom folkrörelsernas organisationskultur. Konflikten mellan folkrörelsernas ideella logiker och kulturpolitikens kvalitetslogik uppträder i organisationskulturen på olika sätt. ABF:s kärnvärderingar nämligen hjälpsamhet, jämlikhet och högt arbetsengagemang anses vara mindre aktuella idag. Hjälpsamhet och jämlikhet ligger också till grund för Riksteaterns demokratiseringsverksamhet och anses fortfarande vara aktuella i organisationen. När det gäller ABF har vi funnit att organisationen har utvecklat en professionell och icke-normativ organisationskultur med stränga kontrollmekanismer och stor fokus på arbetsutförande och processansvar i ett slut organisationssystem. Stränga kontrollmekanismer anses vara ett resultat av kulturpolitikens krav på ökad internkontroll och kvalitetssäkring. Studien visar att Riksteatern har utvecklat en komplex mångsidig organisationskultur som finns i två sammanhängande lager. En lokal, personalinriktad och normativ arbetskrets som omger sig med professionella, resultatinriktade och pragmatiska medarbetare. Detta leder till en normativ organisationskultur som erbjuder pragmatiska lösningar i syfte att kunna leva upp till kulturdepartementets krav på hög kvalitet, resurseffektivitet och antalet besökare. Det finns en tendens mot professionalism och pragmatism inom båda organisationerna. Detta kan bero på att båda organisationerna är ekonomiskt beroende av statliga bidrag och därför ska leva upp till kulturpolitikens kvalitetskrav. Detta ledde också till svagt normativt engagemang och ett slags samhällelig passivitet. Vi har också funnit att betoningen på kvantitativ utvärdering inte är en fungerande strategi för utvärdering av ideell kulturverksamhet. Istället har detta orsakat paradoxala uppdrag och identitetsförvirring inom organisationerna enligt våra respondenter.
The purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic description of the organizational culture in social movement organizations in Sweden and also to investigate its possible changes under the impact of cultural policy. The following study has been done using Geert Hofstede’s theories on different levels and dimensions of organizational culture. The study explores the organizational values, rituals, heroes and symbols in the context of organizational practices to be examined as meaningful cultural representations. This study has been done based on qualitative research method using semi-structured interviews and convenience sampling strategy for data collection. The data has been collected through personal interviews with four employees from two social movement organizations in Stockholm and from different areas of practice; The Swedish National Touring Theatre (Riksteatern) and The Workers’ Educational Association (ABF). The respondents have been working in variety of positions and have many years of experience. The interviews have been recorded as audio files after granting permission and ensuring the respondents’ anonymity to be preserved. A content analysis has been done following the transcription of the recorded material in the form of quotes and interpretations. Secondary data has been also used in the form of historical information regarding the origins of Swedish social movements and their development process. Our study shows that there is a constantly ongoing reorganization process in the Swedish social movements which has caused significant changes in the social movements’ organizational culture. The conflict between the logic of the social movements and the quality-oriented logic of the Swedish cultural policy emerges in the organizational culture in different ways. ABF’s core values such as benevolence, equality and high work engagement are considered to be less relevant in the current organizational culture. Benevolence and equality are also the core values of Riksteatern and are still considered to be relevant in the current organizational culture. When it comes to ABF, we have found that the organization has developed a professional and pragmatic organizational culture with strict control mechanisms and huge focus on task performance and processes in a closed-system organization. The strict control mechanisms are considered to be the result of the Swedish cultural policy’s requirements regarding internal control and quality assurance. The study shows that Riksteatern has developed a complex multidimensional organizational culture which exists in two interrelated layers. A local, employee-oriented and normative work circle surrounded by professional, result-oriented and pragmatic coworkers. This leads to a normative organizational culture which offers pragmatic solutions in order to be able to meet the ministry of culture’s requirements regarding high quality, resource efficiency and visitor numbers. There’s a tendency towards professionalism and pragmatism in both organizations. This might depend on the fact that both organizations are economically dependent to public funds and therefore are required to meet the cultural policy’s quality requirements. This leads also to a low normative engagement and societal passivity. We have also found that the emphasis on the quantitative evaluation ad revision is not an effective strategy to evaluate nonprofit cultural organization. Instead, this strategy has caused paradoxical missions and confusion regarding organizational identity, according to our respondents.

Subject of this study is the evolvement of the radical art music scene in Sweden. In this development took the labour movement an active part during the 1960s. The purpose of this study is to examine how the relationship between the radical art music scene and the labour movement was constituted and what this relationship implied for the Swedish radical art music scene during the 1960s. During the 1960s radical music became an influencial part in the Swedish music scene of modern art music. In this development the artists’ society Fylkingen had a central position. In the early 1960s Fylkingen began to incorporate writers, engineers, scientists, sociologists, philosophers, economists, etc. in their work and a number of projects were initiated which interacted with common society. A proposal for a public record company was developed together with KSF (Social Democratic Association for Cultural Workers) and was presented to the Swedish parliament. In collaboration with ABF (Workers’ Educational Association) the first studio for electronic music was build in 1960 and the relationship between the labour movement and the radical art music scene was institutionalized as the Stockholm Electronic Music Studio Foundation. This thesis uses the terminology of Ludwik Fleck to examine the relationship between the radical art music scene and the labour movement. The concepts of Thought collective and Thought-style are used to draw conclusions about common values and objectives within the Thought-style. The radical art music scene and the labour movement are understood to be part of a common Thought collective with a common style of thought. Because of this relationship, projects initiated in the radical music scene came to emphasize the democratic and educational aspects of music. In the latter half of the 1960s it was conceived impossible to achieve these goals under the existing program, leading to the notion within the style of thought that technological advancement was a prerequisite for a democratic music scene.

Social work licensure has been implemented for 14 years, what kind of impact on Taiwanese social workers and what is its meaning to them? This study aims to explore the social worker’s labor situation and the views, expectations of the social worker under the existing social work licensing system. In this study, questionnaires were distributed to the member of Taichung social worker Association, a total of 301 questionnaires were printed, 155 valid questionnaires, effective response rate 51.5%; also conducting in-depth interviews with 12 practice social worker. Results as follows: First, in terms of practical satisfaction and expectation of social work licensure system, “professional growth” scores the top. Second, respondents who expect to gain from social work licensure are a lot more than respondents who did obtain from social work licensure. Respondents felt disappointed for social work licensure system fails to enhance the public with better understanding of the duty of social workers. They also disappointed in the failure of the system to provide social workers with better payment and well-developed welfare. Third, subjects take positive view to the legalization of professional continuing education, but take negative view to the supplementary measure of the legalization system. Forth, it is concerned greatly by the subjects that possessing a license may not indicate one’s higher competitiveness than well-experienced social workers. Discussions of the current social work licensure system and suggestions for groups in this field, employing units and social workers were provided to conclude the study.

The developmental trend in the field of mental health is recovery-oriented services, the cross-cultural applicability of which is often discussed; in addition, the individualism-collectivism tendency is an important concept in studying cross-cultural research. Although past studies do not point out the Intervening Variables of individualism-collectivism tendency and the knowledge and attitude of recovery-oriented services, the stigma of mental health diseases has always been an important variable in the field of mental health. It affects the attitudes of service providers, and even has a further impact on their identification of such knowledge. Wherein, mental health social workers is an important and rarely discussed group. Therefore, the research subjects of this study are Taiwan's mental health social workers. Online questionnaire is used to conduct this investigation on the exploration of the relationship between the cultural tendencies of mental health social workers, the stigma of mental health diseases and their knowledge of and attitude towards recovery-oriented services. The questionnaire contains three parts: the "Individualism-Collectivism Tendency Scale", "The Stigma of Mental Health Diseases Scale" and "The Knowledge and Attitude of Recovery-Oriented Services Scale". Factor analyses were conducted on the 83 returned questionnaires. The analytical structure of these factor analyses are about the same as past research, it is only that the differences in "The Knowledge and Attitude of Recovery-Oriented Services Scale" are a bit larger by comparison. But, the said simplified scale is highly correlated with the original complete scale, and the original factor structure is preserved in order to compare it with the existing empirical research. The overall questionnaire Cronbach's α values are .56, .82 and .69 respectively. SPSS statistical software is adopted, and the Descriptive Statistics, t Test, ANOVA, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Analysis and hierarchical regression analysis methods are used to conduct data analysis on the specific topic in this research. Major findings in this research are as follows: 1. The cultural tendencies of mental health social workers lean more towards the "horizontal" trait, in which, the stigma of mental health diseases hinders marriage the most; overall, for Knowledge and Attitude of Recovery-Oriented Services, it trends between "not sure" and "agree", and leans towards "not sure". 2. The cultural tendencies of mental health social workers have no impact on the stigma of mental health diseases. 3. Concerning mental health social workers, the higher their vertical tendency in individualism and collectivism, the higher their knowledge of, and the better their attitude towards Recovery-Oriented Services. 4. For mental health social workers, the stigma of mental health diseases plays an intermediary role between the Individualism-Collectivism Tendency and the Knowledge and Attitude of Recovery-Oriented Services. Lastly, this study makes the following recommendations, based on the research findings: that with the introduction of relevant courses about mental health diseases, the mental health social workers' understanding of mental health diseases may be improved, and their stigma towards mental health diseases may be reduced. In addition, with the use of strength-based training pertaining to recovery services, their knowledge of, and attitude towards recovery-oriented services may also be improved.

Workers’ compensation originated internationally because of the need to address the plight of workers and communities left destitute due to occupationally sustained disabilities or death. This study examines how the right to no-fault compensation developed in South Africa in comparison to the comparable law in Canada and Australia. Specific limitations regarding the right to workers' compensation pursuant to the South African compensatory laws were identified. Limitations identified include the persons falling within the ambit of the law, circumstances creating a right to compensation, the right to claims for increased compensation uniquely provided for in South African compensatory law and founded in the negligent conduct of employers as well as common law redress for damages. The background of the administrative remedy in the form of the right to compensation for occupational injuries and diseases ought to be seen in the light of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa 1996.

The purposes of this study included: explore social workers’ psychological capital (PsyCap) measurement model, the difference between demographic variables and PsyCap, job satisfaction, and turnover intention of the social workers in non-government social welfare organization, the current situation and the correlation among PsyCap, job satisfaction, and turnover intention of social workers in non-government social welfare organization. This study conducted a questionnaire survey which 300 social workers in non-government social welfare organization from Kaohsiung, Taitung and Pingtung as the empirical research subjects. 300 social workers completed self-report instruments including demographic questionnaire, PsyCap Questionnaire, Job Satisfaction Scale, and Turnover Intention Scale. Data obtained from the survey were analyzed by Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Descriptive Statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and structural equation modeling (SEM). Statistical analysis yielded the following results. (1) The fit of one- second -order-factor and four-first-order-factor model for PsyCap was acceptable. (2) Psychological capital and job satisfaction of social workers in non-government social welfare organization was worse. (3) Turnover intention of social workers in non-government social welfare organization was higher. (4) Social workers’ PsyCap correlated with position, service type, and salary. (5) Social workers’ job satisfaction correlated with age, working year, and salary. (6) Social workers’ turnover intention correlated with work type, service type, and salary. (7)There was significant correlation among psychological capital, job satisfaction, and turnover intention of social workers in non-government social welfare organization. Based on those results, implications for the promotion of psychological capital of social workers in non-government social welfare organization were providing. Suggestions for nomological network, practice apply, and future study were providing in this study.

The purpose of this study was to explore social work practitioner familiarity with and interpretation of the 2005 Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) Code of Ethics (“Code”) to determine whether specific sections of the existing Code enable social work practitioners to deliver ethical service in uniquely-situated geographical locations in northern Manitoba. A qualitative research style with exploratory methodology was employed in this study. In-person interviews were conducted with six social workers who have practiced in a northern Manitoba setting for at least three years post- graduation. Once given the opportunity to read and interpret the 2005 Code, five of six respondents reported that the intent of the Code is reflective of their practice, an apparent contradiction between how they described their understanding of the intent of the Code versus their practice realities. All reported that dual roles and potential conflicts of interest are very difficult to avoid when practicing social work in the North. Other key findings indicate that the study participants believe that social workers in the North: are not familiar with the 2005 Code; have a lack of education, knowledge, discussion and accessibility in this Code, and find there is a lack of application of this Code in practice environments. The emergence of the Manitoba College of Social Workers (MCSW), through legislation, will require that all practicing social workers adhere to the 2005 Code of Ethics. All six participants reported factors in northern, rural, remote and isolated environments that affect his/her ability to adhere to the 2005 Code. When social workers are required to register to use the title of Social Worker, the MCSW will be in a position to recognize the environmental factors of practicing in northern, rural, remote and isolated environments. MCSW may choose to consider that, where social workers are required to adhere to the 2005 Code, it may not be feasible in northern, rural, remote and isolated practice areas due to specific factors that have been identified throughout this study. In future studies, consideration and flexibility on behalf of the Psychology/Sociology Research Ethics Board (PSREB) may be necessary in order to ensure that research subjects are protected versus the need to understand, through research, the realities of social work practice. Secondly, researchers interested in expanding or replicating the findings of this study may choose to consider the disclosure and provision of the interview questions prior to the actual interviews. Additionally, future research to review ethical practice in the social work profession would facilitate a broader understanding of whether all social workers practice under existing requirements set out in current MIRSW by-laws and, in the future, provincial legislation that is applicable to every social worker in Manitoba. This study was limited to six participants. Broader research to more fully investigate the practical realities of applying the 2005 Code in northern environments could inform how the new legislation is implemented.

O debate sobre a organização da categoria profissional de Serviço Social em Portugal é de maior relevância diante de uma sociedade progressivamente mais envolvida nos processos de decisão política. Para compreender a situação atual da profissão é importante conhecer a sua trajetória histórica, percorrendo o caminho realizado pelos movimentos sociais até o atual período de participação política e respetivo envolvimento de seus profissionais na efetividade do reconhecimento e valorização da profissão. Neste sentido, partimos do princípio que a regulamentação da profissão através da Ordem dos Assistentes Sociais é fundamental para consolidar seu reconhecimento do ponto de vista técnico e ético-político, assumindo uma direção social no compromisso com a sociedade. O principal objetivo desta investigação foi o de compreender os fenómenos que perpassam as questões relativas à organização do Serviço Social e participação política dos Assistentes Sociais, na perspetiva da história da profissão e dos entrevistados – informantes privilegiados com relevante envolvimento associativo, sindical e/ou acadêmico. Para tal, foi realizado um estudo exploratório de caraterísticas descritivas utilizando as técnicas de revisão sistemática da literatura e entrevistas semiestruturadas. Conclui-se, que a participação política dos Assistentes Sociais em movimentos associativos e espaços de discussão é insuficiente diante das necessidades urgentes de regulamentação da profissão e que os fatores motivadores para tal esvaziamento são inúmeros, desde a precarização das relações e condições de trabalho, até a falta de sentimento de pertença e coletividade da categoria. Pretendemos que esta investigação não esgote o processo de pesquisa acerca da temática em si, mas antes, promova um significativo debate e um aprofundamento em produção bibliográfica atualizada de modo a contribuir com um “salto para o futuro” desta profissão.
The debate about the organization of the professional category of Social Work in Portugal is of greater relevance before a society progressively more involved in the processes of political decision. To understand the current situation of the profession, it is important to know its historical trajectory, tracing the path taken by social movements to the current period of political participation and the respective involvement of its professionals in the effectiveness of the recognition and appreciation of the profession. In this sense, we assume that the regulation of the profession through the Order of Social Workers is fundamental to consolidate its recognition from a technical and ethical-political point of view, assuming a social direction in the commitment to society. The main objective of this research was to understand the phenomena that pervade the issues related to the organization of Social Work and political participation of Social Workers, from the perspective of the history of the profession and the interviewees - privileged informants with relevant associative, union and/or academic involvement. For this, an exploratory study of descriptive characteristics was carried out using techniques of systematic literature review and semi-structured interviews. It is concluded that the political participation of Social Workers in associative movements and spaces for discussion is insufficient in view of the urgent needs of regulation of the profession and that the motivating factors for such emptying are numerous, from the precariousness of relations and working conditions, to the lack of sense of belonging and collectivity of the category. We intend that this research does not exhaust the research process on the subject itself, but rather, it promotes a significant debate and a deepening in updated bibliographic production to contribute with a "leap into the future" of this profession.

The main research of my diploma is the competence of social workers and personal care attendants. In this work I focus on the definition of terms of social work competence and adaptation of the Australian competency model for the conditions of social services in the Czech Republic. I also focus on the design of the change process and its implementation - the application of competence model to the organization of social services for retired people. The design of the competency model is compiled of the non-profit organization ŽIVOT 90 which focuses on helping seniors. It can be used to select staff, set up or improve the adaptation process of new employees, evaluate and develop existing employees in the team, and for possible career changes. The goal of this diploma thesis is to introduce the profession of social worker in selected U.S. states - State of California, State of Iowa, State of New York, and State of Texas. In order to achieve the goal, the thesis first discusses the development and professionalization of social work, the values and ethics within the profession, the forms of the profession regulation and the scope of social work practice in the overall context of the U.S. Subsequently, it describes the specifics of social work profession in the selected states, including geographic and demographic description that significantly influences the focus of social work in each state. In a separate chapter, several aspects of the social work profession in the U.S. and the Czech Republic are compared. Aboriginal arts practices in the southeast of Australia have, since the early years of colonisation, been rarely considered within the realm of authentic Aboriginal arts practices. Such attitudes were a reflection of the colonial encounter and associated attempts to assimilate the Aboriginal population with the White. This thesis explores Aboriginal arts practices and asserts that there has always been Aboriginal art in the southeast and that, despite the overwhelming effects of colonisation, the work of Aboriginal artists provides a distinct and definite counter-history to that endorsed by the dominant culture. Using published historical and contemporary accounts and recent interviews from Aboriginal artists and arts workers, this thesis investigates the continuation of the knowledge and practice of southeast Australian Aboriginal art and its connection to culture, identity and wellbeing. It explores the corresponding adaptations and changes to these practices as Aboriginal people contended with the ever-expanding European occupation of the region from 1834 onwards.
This project adopted a collaborative research methodology, where members of the Aboriginal arts community were consulted throughout the project in order to develop a study which had meaning and value for them. The collaborative approach combined an analysis of historical data along with the stories collected from participants. By privileging the Aboriginal voice as legitimate primary source material, alternative ways of exploring the history of Aboriginal art were possible. Although the story of Aboriginal art in the southeast is also one of tensions and paradoxes, where changes in arts practices frequently positioned art, like the people themselves, outside the domain of the ‘real’, the findings of this project emphasise that arts practices assist people with connecting and in some cases reconnecting with their communities. Aboriginal art in the southeast is an assertion of identity and wellbeing and reflects the dynamic nature of Aboriginal culture in southeast Australia.

This thesis deals with the development and position of the far-right Workers Party (DS) and the Workers Party of Social Justice (DSSS) in the political system of the Czech Republic. The work also includes a theoretical part, dealing with different views on extremism and radicalism. Also discussed is the position of the far-right parties in Central and Western Europe. The main goal is to capture the roots of the Workers 'Party, but also action and ideological bases its successor the Workers Party of Social Justice. Emphasis is placed on the presentation of the party and demonstrations. They are namely the main way to reach supporters. The thesis also analyzes the election results of DS (DSSS) and try to include the party in the Czech party system according to the theory of Giovanni Sartori. There is also a description of the organizational structure of the party and its affiliated organizations. The last chapter discusses the symbolism and iconography of the party.

This dissertation examines collaborations between the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and non-union elements of global civil society (GCS). GCS is presented as a crucial emergent site of transnational class formation, and ITUC collaborations within this field are treated as potentially important moments in transnational class formation. The goal of the dissertation is threefold. It seeks to 1) address the lacuna in GCS studies around the involvement of organized labour; 2) provide an analysis of what ITUC GCS collaborations mean for the remit and repertoire of action of the ITUC; and 3) provide an analysis of the impact of ITUC collaborations on transnational class formation. What the findings show is that the ITUC is heavily engaged in GCS through numerous collaborations with non-union organizations concerned with environmental degradation, human rights, global economic inequality, and women workers. Most significantly, collaboration within GCS has provided the ITUC an avenue to incorporate the needs of marginalized women workers whose work does not “fit” into the traditional model of trade union organizing. These findings lead to the conclusion that these collaborations have allowed the ITUC to expand the remit of its activities beyond “bread-and-butter” unionism, and expand its repertoire of action beyond interstate diplomacy. However, the findings do not support the idea that the ITUC has adopted a social movement framework, although it is clear that the ethos of social movement unionism has had an impact on the organization. Nonetheless, the dissertation concludes that the incorporation of marginalized women workers, and the active engagement of the ITUC in global environmental policy debates, signifies a new moment in transnational class formation.
