The article focuses on the text-forming functions of the personalized narrator “The friend of the house” in the texts of J. P. Hebel's calendar stories. Applying the cross-cutting analysis of the practical material it has been determined that the auctorial narrator “The friend of the house” reflects a special historical path in the development of the “calendar story” (German: “Kalendergeschichte”) as part of a calendar. The personalized calendar figure of “The Rhenish friend of the house” (based on the image of the “lame messenger”) is characterized by the appearance of a typical German urban inhabitant of the 18th century, a locally determined polysemous name and a “heavenly” metaphorical image. In his “divine” purpose he yields to the prophet a bit and tells readers amazing everyday stories of a sentential nature. Sources of his stories are his personal observations, stories of anonymous or mentioned eyewitnesses, second or third parties (“The Rhenish brotherhood of the friend of the house”, the loyal helpers “the adjunct” and “the mother- in-law”) which also have a projection of the personal biography and the ambience of the writer - the author of the “calendar stories”...

Like other instruments of cultural transmission such as school anthologies, illustrated monographs demonstrate a conception of the author which conforms with the conventions of literary history. However, a comparative analysis of different anthologies of the same author makes it possible to conclude that biographical discourse is far from being a homogeneous discursive category. The construction of Rousseau's auctorial figure in the collection ‘Écrivains de toujours’ and in the collection ‘Albums de la Pléiade’ is a good example of this claim. An examination of the relationship between iconography and text is an effective means of approaching illustrated monographs as plurisemiotic objects: though in both of the series studied here the technique is based on collage and commentary, it is carried out differently. Neither at the textual level nor at the level of the image are the editorial choices similar. Thus in the Pléiade album, the photographs act as testimony and the text is more a comment on the photographs; in Rousseau par lui-même, the text is a commentary on the author's works and the images which accompany it assume an illustrative function. In the first case a true cult of the author is maintained, while in the second case the text veers away from the legendary perception of the author. However, the enunciative characteristics of the relationship between Rousseau and his biographers always manifest sympathy and admiration. A further study of other monographs of the same collections will allow for a broader application of these conclusions.

Beginning with the recognition that the records and biographical dictionaries of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries devote greater attention to the personal aspects of Marie de Gournay (1565–1645) than to her literary production, which was nonetheless substantial, this study considers the forms of, and reasons for, such an obscuring of her authorial standing. Among the probable explanations, what stands out is the less than enthusiastic reception reserved by the seventeenth century for the intellectual ambitions evident in that “women's writing” with which Gournay seems to have established so close a connection as finally to transform her work into a textual alter ego of the author.

Si le commentaire grammatical ne constitue pas à proprement parler un « genre », il se voit néanmoins régi par des règles issues de la tradition, qui ne manquent pas d’entraîner une impression d’homogénéité lorsque l’on compare les différents ouvrages qui nous sont parvenus. Est-il donc possible de dégager d’un type d’écrit aussi figé une figure auctoriale ? Les commentaires nous permettent-ils d’en apprendre davantage sur leur auteur et de nous faire entendre un discours du scholiaste sur sa propre activité ? Cet article se propose de répondre à ces questions en s’appuyant sur les commentaires de Servius aux oeuvres de Virgile, que nous comparerons à d’autres écrits — et notamment au Servius Danielis — afin d’en dégager les caractéristiques essentielles du célèbre grammaticus.

Du récit de jeunesse Temps du rêve au roman de la grande maturité Le Boulevard périphérique, on voit se dessiner progressivement une figure dominante relevant du mythe personnel de l’auteur. En parallèle s’esquisse une imago de la figure auctoriale susceptible de consolider l’image de soi.

Para acceder a una visibilidad mediática, a una postura reconocible por el público y por sus pares, el traductor se ve obligado a capitalizar espacios de enunciación como los que conceden los prefacios, la crítica o las noticias biográficas. Es gracias a estos espacios, en los que el traductor pone en marcha estrategias discursivas e institucionales que le permiten posicionar su figura y su proyecto de traducción, que este accede al estatuto de traductor-auctoritas, esto es, de instancia dotada de una autoridad simbólica susceptible de conferirle una imagen pública. Un análisis detallado de las estrategias editoriales y de los cálculos institucionales que Baudelaire implementó para posicionar su proyecto de traducción de Edgar Allan Poe nos permitirá demostrar no solo cómo el poeta accede al estatuto de traductor-auctoritas, sino también el rol que este jugó en la construcción de su propia identidad literaria.

La représentation de l’écrivain dans la littérature québécoise s’inscrit dans une histoire d’émancipation, d’inadéquations et de résistances. Depuis les premiers travaux d’André Belleau, cette représentation a évolué et, dans les années 2000, se profile une figure de romancier à la fois plus confiante et plus évanescente que celle des années 1960-1970. L’écrivain, en s’affichant dans sa fiction, montre les attaques répétées faites par la théorie et par la société à son autorité créatrice. C’est ce que nous proposons d’observer, en nous reportant à Une estafette chez Artaud de Nicolas Tremblay et à Pleurer comme dans les films de Guillaume Corbeil. En abordant diverses figures auctoriales (Bartleby, l’anti-écrivain, l’écrivain frauduleux, etc.), nous serons amené à penser, par le fait même, le statut de la littérature dans la production littéraire québécoise contemporaine.

Résumé Le théâtre de Michel Ouellette, qui s’est d’abord inscrit dans une tradition plus mimétique et communautariste, a manifestement pris le virage d’une littérarisation autoréflexive de la figure même du créateur. Cet article explore les instances d’autofiction intrusives de l’auteur et de sa démarche correctrice, revisitant à la fois les pièces de ses contemporains et le sort de ses propres personnages. L’oeuvre de Ouellette présente, par le truchement d’avatars auctoriaux, la figure d’un ré-écrivain mettant en scène son oeuvre correctrice.

La réflexion portera sur l'œuvre de Marguerite Duras, auteure inclassable, complexe, et terreau fertile pour aborder l'épineuse question de la construction d'un mythe littéraire ou de ce que l’on appelle aujourd’hui une posture littéraire, qui est au cœur de ce projet de thèse. Le corpus a donc été défini en fonction de ce projet : les supports principaux de réflexion seront Un Barrage contre le Pacifique, L'Amant et L'Amant de la Chine du Nord, à un moment où l’auteur impose une figure auctoriale assise sur la mise en scène d’un roman familial et d’une légende personnelle. Le triptyque 'romanesque' constitue, en effet, la pièce la plus importante du puzzle de la vérité personnelle qu'elle a su imposer au lectorat. Mais d'autres œuvres seront prises en compte, la bibliographie de Duras étant émaillée de métaphores obsédantes perdues dans le no man's land de la vérité et de la fiction.En centrant la réflexion sur la double question de la posture littéraire et de la figure auctoriale, il s’agira, en délaissant la question de l'autobiographie et de la fiction, sujets maintes fois traités et quelque peu galvaudés aujourd'hui, d'analyser comment Marguerite Duras a réussi, sciemment ou inconsciemment, à tromper ses lecteurs, à s'inventer un destin et à se mettre en scène en tant qu’auteur. Les questions sur Duras convergent vers l'idée de l'écrivain qui construit son image, même au-delà de sa mort, à partir de l'épais brouillard qu'il installe. C'est aussi au cœur même de ce « mensonge » que se trouvent le plus souvent les manipulations secrètes de l'auteur, conscientes ou inconscientes, qui participent, avec l'aide de ses lecteurs, à l'érection de son mythe. Devenue « la Duras », au terme d'un long processus de création, de mémoire, de jeu, de distanciation, de dissociations, elle a fait sortir de son écriture courante sa légende en la tricotant et en la détricotant.Marguerite Duras représente donc un cas d’école pour quiconque s’intéresse à la manière dont un écrivain se construit une image publique, propre à orienter la réception de son œuvre et à en conforter la légitimation par le public et par la critique. Comment la petite Marguerite Donnadieu est-elle devenue « la Duras », puis enfin « M. D. » ? Comment un écrivain, en constante évolution, parvient à se transformer pour entrer dans l'Histoire avec son histoire, quitte à la créer de toutes pièces ? Ces questions sont omniprésentes chez Duras, qui invite également son lecteur à s'interroger sur la façon dont l'écrivain soigne son image, voire « se vend ». Il serait intéressant d'analyser subséquemment la manière avec laquelle celle-ci a joué avec les médias, tout en se jouant d'eux. Monstre médiatique légendaire libérée par la parole « autobiographique » à la publication de L'Amant en 1984, elle s'est en effet forgée une nouvelle identité, en s’érigeant en « papesse » du roman grâce à un mouvement perpétuel entre vie réelle et vie fantasmée
By focusing the reflection on the double question of literary posture and auctorial figure, the point will be to analyse how Marguerite Duras has succeeded, consciously or unconsciously, in betraying her readers, inventing her fate and setting herself up as an author, putting aside the question of autobiography and fiction, issues that have been treated so many times, and have often been overused. Questions on Duras converge towards the idea of the writer who builds her image, even beyond her death, from the thick fog she creates. It is also at the very heart of this “lie” one can find one of the author’s most secret manipulations, conscious or unconscious, that enables, with the help of her readers, the erection of her myth. When she became “La Duras”, at the end of a long process of creation, of memory, of game, of alienation, of dissociations, her everyday writing gave birth to her legend, knitting and unknitting it.Marguerite Duras is therefore a textbook case for whoever is interested in the way a writer builds her own public image, inspiring the reception of her work, and comforting its legitimation by critics and public. How did the little Marguerite Donnadieu become “La Duras”, and then finally “M. D.”? How did a writer, constantly evolving, manage to transform herself so as to enter History with her own story, even if she had to create it thoroughly? These questions are ever-present in Duras, who is also encouraging her reader to question the way a writer takes great care with her image, even selling “her soul”. Subsequently it would be interesting to analyse the way she played with the media, all the while mocking them. A legendary monster created by the media but freed by the “autobiographical” voice when “L’Amant” was published in 1984, she definitely forged herself a new identity by claiming to be the “High Priestess” of the novel thanks to a perpetual movement between real life and fantasized life

Cette thèse présente une réflexion sur les multiples figures du romancier américain qui émergent des entretiens littéraires de The Paris Review entre 1953 et 1973, soit les deux premières décennies d'existence de la revue. Afin de mieux saisir les spécificités et l'impact du modèle d'entretien littéraire créé par une poignée de rédacteurs aussi inspirés que débutants, cette étude revient tout d'abord sur l'histoire des little magazines, sur le contexte de la création et le fonctionnement interne de The Paris Review, avant de retracer l'histoire complexe de l'entretien littéraire. Grâce à l'analyse des archives de la revue, elle met en évidence la collaboration de l'équipe de rédacteurs et des romanciers interviewés dans un processus novateur de réécriture des entretiens. Car l'entretien littéraire est un lieu de négociation de différentes autorités, entre l'« ethos préalable » de l'écrivain utilisé par l'interviewer et les diverses stratégies (scénographies auctoriales, postures, « prêt à être écrivain ») déployées par le romancier pour asseoir sa légitimité. Derrière le portrait à deux voix que semble être l'entretien littéraire apparaît bientôt l'autoportrait de l'écrivain. L'entretien littéraire de The Paris Review donne lieu à une forme de fiction biographique, à travers laquelle l'écrivain que The Paris Review était venu interroger sur « l'art de la fiction » laisse la parole à l'auteur pour construire et défendre son image
This dissertation examines the various figures of the American novelist which takes form in the famous literary interviews published by The Paris Review during the first two decades of its existence (1953-1973). In order to analyze the specificities and the impact of the new model of literary interview created by the inspired, yet inexperienced editors and interviewers of the review, this dissertation first traces the history of "little magazines" as well as the context in which the Paris Review interviews were shaped and polished, and then analyzes the complex history of the literary interview as a genre. Through the study of the archives of the review, the author casts a light on the collaboration between the editorial board and the interviewed novelists during the demanding rewriting process of the literary interviews. The literary interview thus appears as a space where negotiations take place, opposing the preconceptions of the interviewer to the various strategies displayed by the novelist in order to assert his legitimacy. What was originally designed as a single portrait composed by two instances actually turns into the novelist's controlled self-portrait.Ultimately The Paris Review literary interview becomes a form of biographical fiction, in which the writer, initally questioned on "the art of fiction", leaves center stage to the author, who takes great care of his own public persona

Les mythes comme aussi les personnages qui les peuplent, les héros, ont exercé au fil du temps, un charme sur les sociétés. Les hommes du Moyen Age, à leur tour, se tournaient vers eux chaque fois qu’ils éprouvaient le besoin. D’abord, personne ne peut contredire ou rejeter ces récits. Il s’agit des auctoritas que personne ne peut rejeter. Les écrivains de cette époque, pas soucieux de créer, se chargent donc de les transmettre aux illiterrati. Par ailleurs, les personnages jouent un rôle modélisant ; ils constituent des modèles archétypaux que personne ne peut contredire. Les écrivains se réfèrent à ceux-ci afin de mieux définir leur comportement ou adopter, plus généralement, une attitude propice à leur origine, à leur sexe et à leur âge. Par ailleurs, le recours à certains épisodes de leur vie se fait aussi afin d’instruire les hommes ou bien de les rebuter en leur montrant les résultats néfastes d’un comportement incompatible aux lois de la société ou de la nature. A la fin, on se réfère à certains épisodes car ils voient que c’est la meilleure façon pour passer leur message. Certes, le fait de promouvoir le modèle du chef parfait aide aussi la classe noble à se consolider dans une époque où celle-ci se sent menacée par une nouvelle classe qui voit le jour, la bourgeoise. En outre, les écrivains de cette époque trouvent l’occasion de faire passer leurs propres aspirations visant une meilleure société. Plus précisément, d’après eux, le bon chef doit être en réalité large, sage et instruit, capable de gérer intelligemment son fief de sorte que ses sujets puissent vivre harmonieusement. En outre, ils démontrent leur apport à la formation de la société. Même s’ils ne font pas partie de la classe qui fait la guerre, ils contribuent eux aussi à son bon fonctionnement à travers leurs connaissances
Myths, as well as their dominant figures, heroes, have attracted people throughout time. Since their first days of existence, people turned to them whenever they were needed. Medieval people were an eloquent example. Therefore, references to those narrations which managed to survive through time, as well as to those heroes were frequent. At first, those references existed simply because nobody was able to object to or turn down these references. They were auctoritas which referred to real events. The authors of this era were not asked to create, but to pass them on to the illiterate. Furthermore, they possess a formating role. They constitute questioneless archetypal models. Medieval people also resort to those narrations so that they are able to determine their behavior or adapt an attitude appropriate to their origin, their gender and their age. In addition, reference to particular incidents intends to instruct them or prevent them by means of exposing the harmful results of an incompatible behavior with the laws of society or nature.Finally, writers refer to stories regarding ancient heroes because they realize that it is the optimal way to get through their message.The fact that they promote the model of the perfect leader, contributes to consolidation of aristocracy at a time when the class seems to be threatened by a new rising class, the bourgeoisie. Furthermore, they take the opportunity of inculcating their aspirations in an effort to form a better society. So according to them, the perfect lord should be generous, wise and educated, able to handle his fief wisely, in harmony. On the other hand, we acknowledge the authors’ contribution to the formation of society. Even if they are not members of the class of knights, they also contribute to the suitable management of society by the means of their knowledge

This book is the result of a fruitful exchange between the textual studies about Marco Polo’s Devisement dou Monde and the socio-historical research regarding Mendicant Orders. The Order of Preachers, in particular, includes the figure of the Venetian merchant as an auctoritas in the area of anthropological knowledge of Eastern traditions, through a Latin translation process contributing to evangelization in Asia. The aim of this book is to analyze the Dominican reception hybridizing philological and linguistical with historical and archival methods. The crossing of these research trajectories led to the finding of a parchment that testifies definitively the trusting relationship between Marco and the preachers of SS. Giovanni e Paolo convent. This convent is a key cultural center in the humanistic environment of Veneto, within which the Latin version Z is elaborated. This research has shed light on several fundamental moments of the P Latin version’s textual history, exploring the material aspects of manuscript witnesses as well as the textual relation with the vernacular source and Francesco Pipino’s Chronicon. Finally, an investigation is dedicated to the edifying adaptation of Marco Polo’s tales in Nicoluccio d’Ascoli’s sermons. The Dominican reception of Devisement dou Monde has relevant consequences for the text and its circulation, hopefully this book suggests a new perspective on Marco Polo and Dominican studies, stimulating further research.

AbstractThis chapter explores the concepts of discursive and non-discursive ethos, as well as the notion of authorial stance (posture) as defined by Jerôme Meizoz (2007; 2011) in order to analyze the figure of the “ready-made-writer” in French manuals and writing guides at the beginning of the twenty-first century. “Authorial stance,” “ethos,” and “persona” are all terms that take stock of the way in which authors declare themselves writers in the literary field. For Meizoz, posture begins at the moment of publication, that is, at the moment of the official recognition of the author. A close reading of some recent French writing manuals, however, reveals the outline of an implicit portrait of the author budding into a legitimate artist and credible writer, and contains indications on how to carve out a space of creation for oneself. The identities presented by the manuals are shaped by literary models and invested by a collective imaginary. They conform to culturally accepted archetypes, because “becoming a writer, and doing the work of a writer are part of the same phantasm” (Ducas 2002). Learning the craft of writing thus also entails acquiring a corporeal dramaturgy or an “auctorial scenography” (Diaz 2009) which is a prerequisite for creation. This can be achieved by going through various authorial stances, from “visionary” to “apprentice” and “manager of one’s own small enterprise.”

In poetry, particularly in the hexametric one, the use of formulas determines the stylistic fingerprint of an author. The contribution examines the poetic material used by the Constantinian poet Optatianus Porfyrius, trying to identify formulas and motifs peculiar to this author, employed by him several times, or even introduced by him for the first time, some of which appeared successful in the later tradition. The figure of an author well integrated into the poetic tradition emerges, but not without an inventive spirit and auctoritas.

A modern politics attaching itself to the state must adopt a position sovereignty, by which is meant the political settlement in which potestas and auctoritas are aligned. Three competing forms are identified: unitary sovereignty, divided and balanced sovereignty, and the view that sovereign power must be limited by universal principles. Each of these forms can be divided into “red” and “black” varieties, depending on the imagined relationship between sovereign power and modern conditions of flux. A chapter outline introduces the figures who will be explored in the book as a whole: Thomas Hobbes; William Fiennes, Lord Saye and Sele; John Barclay and the romance writers of the 1650s whom he influences; John Milton; and Andrew Marvell. Also described is the book’s sustained engagement of Carl Schmitt, and the ways in which his thought on sovereignty is an example of the competition amongst the concept’s three competing forms.

Chapter 1 surveys what little we can say with reasonable certainty about Vitruvius’s life and the circumstances surrounding De architectura’s publication. Our knowledge of the historical Vitruvius is occluded by a lack of contemporary external testimony, by his declared attitudes toward representation, and by a particularly complex reception tradition both within and outside of Classical scholarship. This chapter focuses in particular on the second of these factors. First, I examine how the work’s dedicatory preface, with its open interest in “representing” Augustan auctoritas, exemplifies the basic difficulties presented by Vitruvius’s rhetoric in the absence of external testimony. I also examine Vitruvius’s attitudes toward texts through close readings of the prefaces to books 7 and 9. The presence of Ennius in the latter of these has confounded scholars, but his appearance there in conjunction with references to the simulacrum and figura poetae compels analogy to ancestral imagines. Next, I turn to Cicero’s Pro Archia, which also compares the commemorative power of text and image with recourse to Ennius. I suggest that Vitruvius’s strategies of self-representation portray him as a close adviser who appropriates the glory of an imperator for the populus Romanus. Comparisons with Horace’s persona in his Satires and apparitorial scribae remain useful, even if Vitruvius’s scribal status is not assured. But Vitruvius’s self-effacing pose should also be understood as an iteration of an earlier model, the Ennian “good friend.”
