The success of Chinese professional athletes is attributable to the government-run elite sport system; it is seen as one of the most effective and successful systems at nurturing high-skilled athletes. However, within the Chinese professional sport system, tensions between athletes' athletic skills and overall personal development have been widely documented. Among all studies, very few have employed in-depth interviews with professional wushu athletes. In this study, the researcher utilized in-depth semi-structured interviews with professional wushu athletes from three of the 25 professional wushu teams in mainland China. The study was conducted in order to understand the potential conflicts between athletes' athletic skills development and overall personal development. Findings revealed that athletes bear the training at great cost to their future potential as self-sufficient members of Chinese society. Their academic, social, and vocational skills are subject to deep neglect that negatively impacts their post-competition careers. The system considers investment in preparation for the post-competitive lives of the athletes to be a distraction from, or even an impediment to, their success in competition. It is suggested that the Chinese sport system undertake a review and reformation of its approach to wushu training to provide athletes with the skills needed to successfully navigate a life outside of athletics.

Prior research has found the female athlete triad in both female athletes and female non-athletes. This study consisted of 192 female participants attending Utah State University with 103 collegiate athletes and 89 non-athletes. The instruments used included the EAT-26, menstrual cycle history questionnaire, osteoporosis questionnaire, and time spent in exercise questionnaire. Results from the present study found a statistically significant difference between athletes and non-athletes being at risk for the triad with female athletes having a higher percentage (4.8%, 3.4%). No statistical significant correlation was found between the risk of the triad and excessive amounts of time spent in exercise in athletes (r=.113, p=.256) and non-athletes (r=-.041, p=.706). When athletes were divided into lean and non-lean athletes statistical significance was found with non-lean (17.4%) sport athletes (χ²(1,N=103)=83.971, p<.01) having a higher overall percentage of being at risk of the triad compared to the athletes involved in lean (5%) sports.

The purpose of this study was to explore the mental skill used by top taekwondo athletes and to determine how well Orlick's "Wheel of Human Excellence" (1995) could be applied to these athletes. In-depth interviews were conducted with nine Canadian taekwondo athletes who had completed and won medals at the international level. The results indicated that Orlick's element of commitment, belief, full focus, positive images, mental readiness, distraction control and, constructive evaluation were common to all subjects. The presentation of rich quotes and experiences offer valuable insights and strategies for taekwondo athletes. A survey of the mental skills of Canadian taekwondo athletes was also completed by 29 athletes to determine the importance of each of the mental skills indentified in Orlick's model. All were ranked as important to success; means ranged between 8.14 and 9.70 on a Likert Scale of 10.

The purpose of this study was to identify if and how athletes experience resonance and how they feel it affects their performance and overall well-being. Four middle distance track athletes (M = 16.5 years old) in their specializing years of participation (Cote & Hay, 2002) participated in in-depth, semi-structured interviews using the Resonance Performance Model (RPM, Newburg 2001) as a structural framework. Over a period of 10 weeks, each athlete was interviewed once every three weeks and completed a daily journal to follow their personal process of resonance and its affect on training, competition, and well-being. Results showed that athletes experienced resonance in their sport but were often unaware of their dream feeling. Over time, athletes became more aware about how they felt during training, performance, and daily living. Resonance was also positively regarded as affecting well-being and overall quality of track performance. Implications for future research and future application of the RPM are discussed.

The present study aimed to document three athletes' in depth-stories to examine their application of resonance and how it influenced their experience of their sport and life. Each athlete took part in a resonance-based intervention involving seven interviews held approximately every second week, three non-intrusive interviews conducted at the site of competitions, daily reflective journaling, reading a book on resonance (Newburg, 2004), and a post-intervention interview four weeks after the end of the intervention. Two means of analysis were used; deductive categorization and narrative analysis. Two individuals developed and applied their personal process of resonance. As a result, they felt the way they wanted to feel in their endeavors, and enjoyed an increased sense of control and acceptance of themselves and their environment. The three athletes' stories shed light on the importance of reflection and ownership in the process of resonance. This study also sheds light on the role of the facilitator in the intervention.

Some performers become so consumed by the demands and pressures of performing that they neglect other priorities in their life. However, some individuals succeed in their performance domain and still have their lives together---they approach their performance with a sense of perspective (Brown, Cairns, & Botterill, 2001). Though the perspectives of adult performers have been outlined in the literature, it is unclear what perspective adolescent participants bring to their performance. The participants were ten young performers (seven athletes and three musicians) selected from a private school in central Canada. They were identified both as top performers and as individuals who had their lives together. In depth interviews revealed the elements that characterize the perspective these participants bring to their performance. Results indicate these adolescents strive to maintain balance in their lives, build relationships with others that assist them in their performance pursuits, approach obstacles with a positive perspective, grow through learning and improving, use a complete focus to absorb themselves in performing, and find passion in their performance pursuits and live this passion everyday.

Communities and athletes see coaches generally as leaders, mentors, and role models in sport. Recent research in the field of coaching revealed that coaches must have the ability to encourage, challenge, and understand the athlete (Bloom, 2002b). Further research indicates that females are known to be psychologically and physically different than males (Fasting & Pfister, 2000); therefore, most females need to be coached differently than men during practice and competition. The notion of self-confidence is an essential element in Vealey's (1986) Sport Confidence Model, in which it is defined as: "the belief or degree of certainty individuals possess about their abilities to be successful in sport" (p. 222). The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand female varsity athlete's perception of how coaches influence their self-confidence. The study used twelve participants (N = 12) among Canadian Interuniversity Sport teams: basketball (3), soccer (3), hockey (2), rugby (2), and volleyball (2). Semi-structured interviews were conducted regarding athletes perception of (a) athlete's perception of self-confidence, (b) different coaching qualities that may positively or negatively influence athletes self-confidence, and (c) athletes perception of an 'ideal' coach that positively influences their self-confidence. The results displayed a combined definition of all 12 athlete's perception of self-confidence, which is "one who believes in herself, has inner strength (while not worrying about others beliefs), and stays positive throughout their sport and life." Secondly the results found four main qualities that athletes perceive essential for a coach to positively influence their self-confidence. Finally, the results revealed 12 predominant coaching characteristics that athletes perceive essential for positively influence their self-confidence. An 'ideal coach' would display these characteristics.

The Female Athlete Triad is a syndrome defined by disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis seen in female athletes. This directed project presented the assessment of knowledge and the importance of education among female athletes regarding the Female Athlete Triad. The researcher worked with the athletic department and the female athletes at California State University, Long Beach. A quantitative study, quasi-experimental, one-group design was completed. A one-group pretest- posttest was used on 45 female athletes to evaluate their knowledge base before and after the educational intervention.

Results indicated a significant increase in the athletes' scores for knowledge of the Female Athlete Triad between the pretest and posttest ( p < .01). The increase in scores signified that a 1-hour education session improved the knowledge base for the female athletes of the Female Athlete Triad. A major recommendation would be to include coaches, trainers, and parents in the educational process.

Students must engage in communities supportive of academia to achieve success at university. Academic engagement is crucial for success, given that low levels of engagement have been shown to develop risks for a variety of adverse consequences, including absenteeism and dropping out of school. Students with a supportive environment have been shown to have higher levels of academic engagement. The purpose of this research was to use a phenomenological approach to explore how participation in a Serious Leisure (Stebbins, 1992) Community of Practice (Wenger, 1999) affects academic engagement. This research may be practical for coaches, educators, student athletes and researchers aiming to promote student athletes' academic engagement. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve first year student athletes in the University of Ottawa's Gee Gees varsity football program. Results showed that football participation is so demanding that it may inhibit academic engagement. Conversely, football participation has helped individuals enter university, create a new home, integrate into a brotherhood/pseudo-family, develop an identity, time manage wisely, and become academically motivated. Although athletic pressure may be detrimental, the social support from the football program has proven helpful towards academic engagement.

Competitive surfing requires athletes to transfer force from their core musculature to maneuver a surfboard successfully with powerful, rotational movements on an unpredictable wave's surface. The purpose of this study was to test athletic performance outcomes in junior elite male surf athletes using a battery of field tests specific to the sport of surfing and determine the effects of a core strength training program (CSTP) on athletic performance outcomes. Nineteen junior elite surf athletes completed a pretest, 8-week CSTP, and posttest of rotational power, lower body power, core strength, core endurance, and rotational flexibility. Means, standard deviations, paired t-tests with a significance of p < 0.05, and effect size was computed. Results demonstrated significant differences in time to peak maximal acceleration, left rotational power, core strength, core endurance, and rotational flexibility. This study concludes implementation of the CSTP enhances athletic performance measurements which is likely to increase overall surfing performance.

Proper evaluation of postural stability is an integral part of the comprehensive management of concussed athletes. Clinicians are in need of a cost-effective and objective tool to assist them in their assessments performed in a variety of health care settings. This non-experimental design compared the Wii Balance Board (WBB), a recreational gaming system, to the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS), a tool developed for sports medicine clinicians for the assessment of postural stability in concussed athletes. The WBB has been proven to be used in various settings for rehabilitation but has not yet been used for the assessment of postural stability (Butler et al., 2010). This study hypothesized whether the WBB, when compared to the BESS, is an objective tool that can be used as an acceptable measurement of postural stability in college athletes. Ninety-one male collegiate football players participated in the study and were measured for postural stability both with the WBB and the BESS tool. Findings revealed that there was a direct and positive correlation between these two instruments. The WBB when compared to the BESS is found to valid tool in assessing postural stability. These results lay the foundation for future research on the WBB and its' usefulness in measuring postural stability. The portable and cost effective WBB potentially could be used in various settings to aid in the concussion management of athletes. It is imperative that nursing becomes more actively involved in the research, prevention and education of concussions. Nursing plays an integral role in the management of concussions and future research on concussions should be conducted by nurse scholars.

The purpose of this study was to examine the process of resonance and overall experience of four endurance athletes participating in a 6-week resonance-based intervention. A second objective was to assess the impact of the intervention on the athletes' cycling performance, subjective well-being, and intrinsic motivation. This 16-week study was a multiple case, single-subject design comprising three phases: (1) a 5-week baseline period, (2) a 6-week resonance-based intervention period, and (3) a 5-week post-intervention period. The resonance-based intervention consisted of four in-depth, open-ended, and semi-structured interviews using the Resonance Performance Model (RPM. Newburg et al., 2002) as a framework and daily reflective journalling. The athletes also participated in a follow-up interview 5 weeks following the intervention to discuss whether or not they continued to apply resonance in their life and experienced any benefits from participating in the study. Measures of cycling performance, life satisfaction, positive and negative affect, and intrinsic motivation were taken twice weekly during the three phases of the study. Qualitative results were analyzed deductively based on the components of the RPM, whereas quantitative results were analyzed using the split-middle technique for single-subject designs. Although quantitative analyses provided mixed evidence for the value of the intervention, qualitative results showed that all four endurance athletes perceived that they enhanced their performance, well-being, and intrinsic motivation for both practices and races that occurred during the intervention. They also reported a significant increase in self-awareness, a positive change in focus from outcome to process, and an empowered ability to manage their emotional responses to events. Practical implications for using the RPM with athletes and other populations in exercise and health settings are discussed.

Resonance interventions are aimed at developing awareness of how one wants to feel, how to prepare to feel this way, the obstacles that get in the way of that desired feel, and how to reconnect with it through individual or group sessions led by a consultant (Newburg, Kimiciek, Durand-Bush, & Doell, 2002; Arcand, Durand-Bush, & Miall, 2007). The purpose of this study was to examine how a coach developed and applied the process of resonance with his team through a resonance intervention facilitated by a researcher/consultant and continued nurturing this process once the intervention was completed. The participants included a varsity volleyball team comprising a 39 year old male coach and 16 female athletes aged between 18-24 years. The 26-week study comprised three phases: a 6-week pre-intervention phase involving interviews and observations; a 14-week intervention phase involving four team sessions, individual consultations with the coach, participant journaling, and observations; and a 6-week post-intervention phase involving interviews. The results are presented as a narrative (Polkinghorne, 1995) to tell the story of how the researcher/consultant worked with the team as a group and also individually with the coach to help them learn and apply their personal resonance process and enhance their performance, leading them to a OUA Championship title.

There is an increasing amount of evidence indicating potentially devastating long-term effects of subconcussive impacts in the absence of clinical symptoms of concussion in high school football players.

Purpose: To determine whether subconcussive head impacts produce any immediate cognitive, postural, and physiological changes after athletic participation.

Methods: Fifty-nine interscholastic football (FB), soccer (SOC), and track (RUN) athletes provided baseline and post-participation data. Four cerebral acoustic response variables were examined using the Brain Acoustic Monitor (BAM) (Active Signal Technologies, Linthicum Heights, MD). Oculomotor function was assessed via the King-Devick (K-D) test. Balance was evaluated using a computerized version of the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS).

Results: Significant changes in left-brain ratio were observed in football players postgame (p = 0.023). Between-group analysis of baseline data for left- and right-brain divergence noted differences as well (FB vs. SOC, p = 0.012, p = 0.008, respectively; FB vs. RUN, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, respectively). There were no significant differences with either oculomotor or balance variables.

Conclusions: One game may not provide enough head impact exposure to elicit detectable changes with the utilized instrumentation. Unexpectedly, there were differences observed in football players' baseline BAM scores in the absence of significant differences in baseline and post-participation K-D test and BESS scores across all groups, possibly indicating that prior exposures to subconcussive impacts in this cohort of football players may be present.

The purpose of this directed project was to develop a web-to-mobile meal-planning program, entitled The AMP (Automated Meal Planner) App. Specifically, this program generates pre-, during-, and post-workout meal plans for male and female athletes 20 to 45 years of age. This evidence-based meal-planning program was designed to provide athletes and active individuals instant access to healthy, nutritional lifestyle practices that ensure nutritional adequacy and bridge the gap between sports nutrition research and sports nutrition practice.

The metabolic "windows of opportunity" (pre-, during-, and post-workout) are the central focus of this meal-planning program. Meal plans are structured by nutrient timing (NT) to deliver precise amounts of nutrients at precisely the right times. Current sports nutrition research, principles and protocol were paired with an athlete questionnaire and a nutrient database through programmed algorithms. The algorithmic merger instantly generates personalized meal plans, which include foods, portion sizes, hydration, recipes, and timing.

Almost every athlete will experience at least one sport related injury (SRI) during his or her career in sport. Because of these injuries, there is often a period of time that the athlete is removed from play and forced to complete a rehabilitation program. In order to enhance this rehabilitation process, researchers have investigated various mental skills used by athletes to enhance their recovery process. Two of the areas that research has reviewed in terms of injury rehabilitation have been imagery and self-efficacy. However, there is a lack of research in which an imagery education intervention has been implemented to see how athletes in a rehabilitation program respond in terms of their imagery use, levels of self-efficacy, and speed of recovery. Therefore, this study investigated the use of an imagery education program, and its effect on athletes' imagery use, self-efficacy and rehabilitation time. This was done through the use of the Athletic Injury Imagery Questionnaire-2 (AIIQ-2) and the Athletic Injury Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (AISEQ). Due to a high attrition rate in participation, inferential statistics were not able to be conducted in order to truly assess the effectiveness of the imagery education program. However, other conclusions were drawn based on the completion rates and various variables that may have affected those rates. The study found that female, freshman were most likely to complete the entire study, while male juniors were least likely to complete the requirements of the study.

This is a pilot study of a proposed model for examining the main and interactionist effects of achievement goal orientations on moral function and the role of perceived ability as a potential moderator in sport morality levels through cluster analysis procedures. One hundred and three elite (103) athletes participating in Division I wrestling completed the Task Ego Orientation in Sport Competition Questionnaire (TEOSQ-COMP; Harwood, 2002), Perceived Ability Inventory Subscale (PAI; Lemyre, et al., 2002), and Hahm-Beller Values Choice Inventory (HBVCI; Hahm, Beller, & Stoll, 1989). Analysis of motivation involved the investigation of motivation from a goal profile standpoint through cluster analysis. Cluster analysis revealed three emergent goal profile combinations: Cluster 1 – High-Ego/Moderate Task; Cluster 2 – Low-Ego/Moderate-Task; Cluster 3 – Moderate-Ego/High-Task. The emergent cluster profiles were then examined for between group interaction effects of goal orientation and perceived ability upon moral function. ANOVA revealed strong interactions between ego orientation and moral function for Clusters 1 and 2, but not at significant effect. As well the moderating interaction of perceived ability upon moral function for Clusters 1 and 2 was strong, but again not at significant levels. These findings help encourage dialogue about the impact the motivational climate of Division I Athletics has upon its participants. By building upon the investigation of competition as a contextualized variable of impact on motivation and moral function (Harwood, 2002; van de Pol & Kavussanu, 2012), this study proposes a more advanced model for investigating the interactionist effect between these two and the motivational climate of Division I sport.

Explosive strength, a function of rate of force development (RFD), is a primary determinant for the amount of peak force that can be produced in critical sport performance time periods ( e.g. foot contact time). Evidence indicates that maximum strength and RFD are correlated. However, the characteristics of this relationship are not well established among athletes. This study examined the relationship of peak isometric force (IPF) and RFD from a mid-thigh pull, among male and female track and field athletes. Athletes were 12 sprinters (S), 10 jumpers (JP) and 12 cross-country runners (XC). Force-time curve analysis was conducted for each (2 trials) isometric pull and averaged for analyses. IPF and RFD from 0 - 200 ms were determined from appropriate curves. IPFs were normalized using an allometric (IPFa) scaling equation: absolute force/ (body mass (kg)0.67). ICCs were previously shown to be > 0.9. Relationships were established with Pearson's r; statistical differences with a Bonferroni adjusted t-Test. IPF, IPFa and RFD were greater in males than females for S and JP but not for XC. IPF, IPFa and RFD were greater for S and JP compared to XC. Similar relationships of IPF to RFD were noted among groups S(r = 0.85), JP (r = 0.87), XC (r = 0.88). Among males, n = 19, the relationship ofIPF to RFD was r = 0.89 and was somewhat higher compared to females, n = 15, (r = 0.78). Overall (n = 34) relationship between IPF and RFD was r = 0.90. These data indicate a strong relationship between maximum strength and "explosiveness" that is independent.

Aerobic and anaerobic correlates of multiple sprint cycling performance. J. Strength Cond. Res. 20(4):792-798. 2006.--The aims of this study were to examine (a) the relationship between maximal oxygen uptake (O2max) and several performance indices of multiple sprint cycling; (b) the relationship between maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) and those same performance indices; and (c) the influence of recovery duration on the magnitude of those relationships. Twenty-five physically active men completed a O2max test, a MAOD test, and 2 maximal intermittent (20 x 5 seconds) sprint cycling tests with contrasting recovery periods (10 seconds or 30 seconds). Mean +/- SD for age, height, and body mass were 20.6 +/- 1.5 years, 177.2 +/- 5.4 cm, and 78.2 +/- 8.2 kg, respectively. All tests were conducted on a friction-braked cycle ergometer with subsequent data normalized for body mass. Moderate (0.3 r < 0.5) positive correlations were observed between power output data and MAOD (range, 0.31-0.46; 95% confidence limits, -0.10 to 0.72). Moderate to large positive correlations also were observed between power output data and O2max, the magnitude of which increased as values were averaged across all sprints (range, 0.45-0.67; 95% confidence limits 0.07-0.84). Correlations between fatigue and O2max were greater in the intermittent protocol with 30-second recovery periods (r = -0.34; 95% confidence limits, 0.06 to -0.65). The results of this study reflect the complex energetics associated with multiple sprint work. Though the findings add support to the idea that multiple sprint sports demand a combination of speed and endurance, further longitudinal research is required to confirm the relative importance of these parameters.

Certain variables: peak aerobic power (PAP), running economy, and lactate threshold, act as limiting factors for endurance running. However, all of the mechanisms underlying high-level endurance running are not completely clear. Alterations in maximum and explosive strength P27 have been shown to effect positive changes in endurance performance, likely by altering P28 running economy. If strength related factors affect running economy, then this should be evident in the running performance of long-distance runners and perhaps PAP. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between peak isometric strength (IPF), explosive strength (rate of force development, RFD), PAP and 3 k performance (3KT) among 5 female and 7 male (n = 12) X-country runners. Relationships were established with Pearson's r; statistical differences with at-Test (p < 0.05). !PF, IPFa and RFD were not different between sexes. PAP was statistically greater in males. Correlations were: PAP vs 3KT (r = -0.92); !PF vs PAP (r = 0.58), 3KT (r = -0.66); IPFa vs PAP (r = 0.45), 3KT (r = 0.45). RFD vs PAP (r = 0.58), 3KT (r = -0.65). Results indicate that strength characteristics correlate moderately to strongly with PAP and 3KT. Data suggests that strong.

The areas of motivation and family structure have been well researched in various studies. However there is limited research on the effects of family structure on motivation, and no research on the effect of family structure on an athlete's motivation. Therefore research on the relationship of family structure and motivation in sport will be performed. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the effects of family structure on an athlete motivation. It is hypothesized that athletes from single parent families will be more extrinsically motivated than those athletes from two parent families. Participants were college athletes from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Saint Francis University (PA) who agreed to participate in a study on family structure and motivation. The study had a sample size of 114 participants the various sports teams associated with the universities. Participants were gathered by emailing all the athletes from the various athletic teams at the two universities. The hypothesis that athletes from single parent families would be more extrinsically motivated than athletes from two biological parent families was found to be partially supported. The research showed that athletes from non-traditional families were more extrinsically motivated in the area of external regulation than athletes from two biological parent families. As there is no previous research on this topic, this study provides a starting point to a subject with numerous possibilities for future research.

The present qualitative study aimed to explore the integration of holistic athlete development into sport psychology service delivery. Using the framework of professional philosophy from Poczwardowski, Sherman, and Ravizza (2004), five holistic sport psychology consultants were interviewed about their service delivery. Five athletes were also interviewed about their experiences working with these consultants. Deductive and inductive content analyses (Patton, 2002) were used to examine the data collected. Results offer three perspectives as to the meaning of holistic sport psychology: (a) Managing environmental effects from non-sport domains to the athlete's performance; (b) developing the individual beyond the athlete; and (c) recognizing the dynamic relationship between an athlete's mental, emotional, physiological states, and their behaviour. Themes from the consultants' beliefs, values, theoretical paradigms to behaviour change, models of practice, roles, operating standards, intervention goals, and intervention techniques and methods are also presented and discussed within the context of various service delivery topics.

INTRODUCTION: ACL-reconstructed (ACL-R) patients exhibit side-to-side asymmetries in movement and loading patterns after surgery, some of which are predictive of a secondary ACL injury. These asymmetries have not been fully assessed in healthy athletes. PURPOSE: To quantify side-to-side symmetry in secondary injury predictors in healthy athletes and compare these metrics to those measured in previous cohorts of ACL-R patients, as well as to assess differences in these metrics between two landing tasks and between sexes. METHODS: 60 healthy recreational athletes performed seven trials of a stop-jump task and seven trials of a single-leg hop for distance on each limb. The kinematics and kinetics of the first landing of the stop-jump and the landing of the single-leg hop were analyzed with a 10-camera motion analysis system (240Hz) and 2 embedded force plates (1920Hz). Limb symmetry indices (LSIs) were calculated for each variable and compared between subject groups, tasks, and sexes with Wilcoxon Signed Rank tests (p<0.05). RESULTS: Control subjects exhibited asymmetry in hop distance (p=0.006). ACL-R subjects displayed greater asymmetry in knee flexion variables, peak forces, and peak knee extension moments during the bilateral landing (p<0.001) and in hop distance (p<0.001). Control subjects showed greater asymmetry in knee flexion variables during the single-leg hop (p<0.001). Males and females showed similar symmetry in both tasks. CONCLUSIONS: Symmetry cannot be assumed in control subjects in all metrics. Asymmetries are more prevalent in ACL-R athletes than in healthy controls. Future work will continue to examine the usefulness of each metric in assessing ACL-R rehabilitation.

Peer assessment is used by health care professionals as a way to share knowledge and evaluate the performance of colleagues. Peer assessment is used widely in medical education as a preparatory tool for students, but peer assessment research in athletic training education is lacking. Athletic trainers are healthcare providers with a similar skill-set to physicians, thus, athletic training education can benefit from the use of peer assessment. Athletic training educators need to research the use of peer assessment as an evaluation tool in order to better prepare students to practice as healthcare professionals. This study investigated the accuracy and reliability of undergraduate athletic training students in their ability to assess their peers. This quasi-experimental study used between-group and within-group designs to answer the research questions. Junior-level students, senior-level students, and their instructors were enrolled as participants. Each student group’s ratings of clinical skills and professional behaviors were compared to instructor ratings to measure accuracy, and each student group’s ratings were compared for reliability. Cohen’s kappa coefficient measured inter-rater agreement for all statistical analyses. Both groups of students were accurate raters (p < .05) of their peers on clinical skills, but only the senior-level students were accurate in rating professional behaviors. Both groups of students were reliable in rating their peers on about half of the clinical skills. The senior-level students were also reliable in evaluating professional behaviors, but the junior-level students were not. The data for this study showed high levels of observed agreement for most clinical skills, subscales and the professional behaviors, but some items had low Cohen’s kappa values, most likely due to a known paradox that occurs with the kappa statistic. As the first study in athletic training education to use undergraduate students, live data collection, and rating of professional behaviors, the findings were promising for future research. Future research needs to include training in peer assessment, use of repeated measures, and comparison of instructor scores in order to better understand peer assessment in this population. Additionally, there is a need to establish consistent, quality measures in peer assessment research, including those used in athletic training education.

The effect of cocktail or ?pre-workout? supplements containing L-arginine nitrate and caffeine are equivocal with anaerobic performance. The purpose of this study was to compare anaerobic performance and blood flow of pre-workout supplement containing L-arginine-nitrate and caffeine-to-caffeine and placebo. In a randomized, double-blind study, 12 resistance-trained males (caffeine users) completed three trials. Biodex concentric-concentric elbow-flexion and extension (5-sets, 10-repetitions). Ultrasound measured brachial blood flow (M-Vel, V- r2 and V-C). Statistical analyses revealed a significant difference in total dynamic work PRE-PLA (P<0.0001) and CAF-to-PLA (P<0.0001) but not PRE-to-CAF (P=0.9581). Furthermore, a significant difference V- r2 PRE-to-CAF (P=0.0391) and PLA-to-CAF (P=0.0070) and M-Vel PRE-to-CAF (P=0.0281). Conclusion, PRE did not differ CAF in strength measures other than a difference in M-Vel. PRE compared to PLA were not statically different in blood flow. The study illustrated no improvement beyond individual ingredient. This research may be useful for future cocktail supplement and Nitric Oxide research.

Context: Entry-level athletic trainers enter the workforce with the skills taught to them by athletic training programs (ATPs) using the Competencies developed by our accrediting body.

Objective: These competencies are developed using data collected from athletic trainers in the field with no input from the consumers of athletic training services.

Design: This study used a 3-round Delphi questionnaire.

Setting: Secondary schools located South Louisiana.

Participants: Six experts in the field of athletic training.

Data Collection and Analysis: In round 1, participants were first asked to identify individual skills within predetermined skill categories created from the Competencies and existing research. In rounds 2 and 3, participants ranked and rated their responses from round 1. Using Delphi methodology with qualitative and quantitative analysis, a Duty-Task List (DTL) was created from the data, which identified the essential skills for entry-level athletic trainers.

Results: Ranking of the skill categories produced four tiers, the top tier consisting of skill categories developed from the Competencies. The bottom tier consisted of two items, both from the Competencies: use of evidence-based medicine in practice and therapeutic interventions. Data further revealed communication, its many different forms, was the most important individual skill for entry-level athletic trainers.

Conclusions: The Delphi methodology used in this study was once again shown to be as effective as DACUM in producing an industry-supported DTL. In doing so, the participants gave a clear conceptualization of the essential skills needed as an entry-level athletic trainer, while also identifying some skills missing from the Competencies. Consideration should be given to the consumers of athletic training services when the next version of the Competencies is created. The athletic trainers on the panel consistently ranked higher skill categories from the Competencies, while the administrators on the panel ranked the non-competency skill categories higher. Additionally, there is still some resistance to increased use evidence in practice, which may be further proof of the chasm between what is considered desirable by clinical setting athletic trainers and academic setting athletic trainers.

Epidemiological studies have reported that ozone-pollution has a negative impact on human health. This pollutant is associated with high temperatures and is expected to continue to rise with the predicted global warming. People and athletes that exercise outdoors are of particular concern because, the more intense and the more prolonged the activity, the higher the ozone dose delivered to the lungs and potentially the higher the risk for performance impairment, lung function decrement, onset of lung inflammation, lung injury and oxidative stress. The main aim of the studies contained in this thesis was to evaluate the impact of ozone-pollution (0.1 ppm), heat and humidity on well trained runners taking part in an 8 km time trial run. Different end points were investigated for an analysis of the impact on performance outcome, lung function, lung inflammation and oxidative stress. In addition, a second aim was to investigate whether a 2-week supplementation period of vitamin C (500 mg•day-1) and vitamin E (100 IU•day-1) would provide any beneficial effects to the participants. The participants' lung function was measured by spirometry. Lung inflammation and oxidative stress status were assessed by a variety of markers both in the upper respiratory airways, by nasal lavage, and in the plasma. The markers assessed included: neutrophil count, clara cell protein (CC16), interleukin-8 (IL-8), uric acid, GSH/Protein and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity. The results showed that the athletes performance was significantly decreased in the hot and humid condition (mean ± SD: 32min 35sec ± 2min 25sec) and in the hot, humid and ozone-polluted condition (33min 09sec ± 2min 44sec) when compared with the ozone alone condition (30min 27sec ± 2min 23sec) and the control condition (30min 15sec ± 1min 58seg). Ozone alone had little effect on the performance variable. The participants' lung function was not affected by the adverse environmental conditions. Evidence of early lung epithelial injury, however, was observed by an increase in CC16 in the upper respiratory airways immediately after the exercise trial in the hot, humid and ozone-polluted environment; though this was not observed for any other marker of inflammation at this time point. In this same adverse environmental condition, an increase in the GSH/Protein concentration in the upper respiratory airways was found immediately after the exercise. It was observed that the 2-week supplementation protocol improved the runners' time to complete the 8 km time-trial run in the hot, humid and ozone-polluted environment by 2.6%. In addition, the supplementation was shown to be effective in decreasing the lung inflammation induced by the combination of ozone pollution, heat and intense exercise. This was observed by a smaller increase in the concentration of CC16 in both the upper respiratory airways (0.67 ± 0.5 mg•l-1) and plasma (39.4 ± 17.4 ng•ml-1) in the vitamin treatment compared to the placebo. In addition, in the vitamin treatment the, cortisol concentration (29.2 ± 14.8 ng•ml-1) after the run, the IL-8 concentration (75.8 ± 43.2 pg•ml-1) and neutrophil percentage (22.6 ± 17.2 %) in the airways 6 h after the run were also reduced compared to the values in the placebo treatment (49.9 ± 13.4 ng•ml-1; 126.6 ± 103.2 pg•ml-1; 25.2 ± 22.6 % respectively). Taken into consideration together, these results provide evidence that heat and humidity combined with ozone have a detrimental effect on athletes' performance in an 8 km time trial, it cannot be discounted that this was simply due to the heat and humidity as there was no differences in the two heat performances. The hot, humid and ozone environment elicited an early epithelial damage characterized by increase in CC16 concentration in the airways. Moreover, an increase in the antioxidant concentration in the upper respiratory airways in that same trial, as indicated by the nasal lavage GSH/protein, suggests a protective mechanism against the oxidative stress stimulated by the high intensity exercise in association with ozone, heat and humidity. Heat and humidity alone had a similar detrimental effect in performance. While, ozone alone had little effect on the variables. In addition, it can be suggested that 2 weeks of a low dosage of vitamin C and E supplementation might present some benefits for the performance outcome and immune system of trained individuals when taking part in a running competition in an ozone-polluted, hot and humid environment. These benefits will, however, depend on the regulation of the antioxidants uptake and metabolism of each subject.

In recent years, much has been learned about the beneficial role of psychological skills (e.g., goal setting, stress management) in rehabilitation from injury. Several authors (e.g., Cramer Roh & Perna, 2000; Misasi, Richmond, & Kemler, 1998) suggest that athletic trainers are ideal to teach athletes psychological skills. The most effective way to integrate psychological skills in rehabilitation may be to have athletic trainers work with athletes on both the physical and psychological recovery from injury. Previous research by Roepke (1993) suggested that when athletic trainers are educated about sport psychology rehabilitation interventions, they tend to become proficient in the use of such interventions, and they consider the interventions effective. The primary goal of this study was to determine whether athletic trainers incorporate psychological skills in their work with injured athletes after receiving training in using such skills. Another goal was to assess changes in athletic trainers' attitudes (e.g., importance) with regard to incorporating psychological skills in rehabilitation. A third goal was to determine whether a brief intervention program training athletic trainers in the delivery of sport psychology rehabilitation interventions increases trainers' confidence in using such skills. Other goals related to athletes' perceptions were unable to be tested due to insufficient data. Due to low enrollment and completion rates for the study (N = 8), an additional purpose became soliciting athletic trainers to find out why they did not participate. Responses to this survey by athletic trainers and athletic training students ( N = 25) indicated that time constraints were a primary reason for non-participation. Those who did complete the study reported an increase in perceived skill level relative to using psychological techniques with injured athletes, and also reported that they thought, overall, that they used the techniques more. This latter statement was not corroborated with the data from daily reports, but does demonstrate a perceived shift in behavior. There was no change in athletic trainers' perception of the importance of psychological skills following the educational program. Low enrollment and limited compliance with the research protocol weakened the findings of this study. Implications for further work, including several alternate designs, are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to define the coaching leadership behaviors of successful National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I women's rowing coaches. In defining these behaviors, the purpose was threefold: (1) to determine if any relationships exist between successful coaches, the athlete leadership preferences of their team, or the congruency between the leader behaviors with the preferred leader behaviors of the athletes, (2) to understand what these successful coaches believe contributes most to their actual leadership behaviors, and (3) to determine if there is a general consensus among the athletes concerning their coach's leader behaviors, regardless of position on the team. Participants consisted of 168 female collegiate rowers and coxswains and 22 coaches from NCAA Division I institutions. In addition to demographic questions, each coach was asked to complete the Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS) - Coaches' Version and each athlete was asked to complete both the LSS - Preference version and actual Behavior version. In addition to the questionnaire, five coaches were interviewed to supplement the data gathered. Athletes provided information via the surveys to assess their respective coach's leadership behaviors, while also providing information about their own preferred coaching leadership behaviors. Coaches provided a self-assessment of their own coaching leadership behaviors via the survey or via the survey and substantiated through the interview (if they participated in the interview process). The quantitative data were analyzed using a variety of descriptive and bivariate statistics. Demographically, the participants were quite similar, with little variation in age or race and no variation in gender (athletes). After analyzing the data, statistical significance was found using ANOVA for athletes' assessment of their respective coach's behavior based on their team position. Athletes in the 1st eights ranked the coaches higher in social supportive behaviors than did athletes in other boats. The qualitative data were analyzed using guidelines for phenomenological research. Four themes resulted from this data analysis - coaching knowledge, athlete management, shared values, and team engagement. Each of these themes is considered critical to leading successful women's collegiate rowing teams. Further research would prove helpful using a greater number of athletes and a stronger focus on qualitative methods to garner additional data.

Establishing a strong fan base within the inaugural year of a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Program presents many challenges. Tracking consumers and their behavior becomes imperative as sport marketers seek to better understand the first fan adopters of a new program. With new NCAA football programs being established every year, sport marketers of a new program are challenged to not only find a loyal fan-base who will continue to support the program despite win or lose, but find new and innovative ways to grow their fan base. The purpose of this study was to examine attendance demographics and consumer behavior for the inaugural football season at a NCAA Division 1 program. Data were collected (n = 914) from a relatively equal distribution of fan groups (students- 34.8%, alumni- 32.9%, and other- 32.3%) via an in-person survey completed on a tablet interface. Results demonstrate that the level of fandom (temporary, devoted, or fanatic) impacts certain consumer behaviors, including; overall support of the program, media consumption, and game day behaviors.
