Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: 1) mengetahui hasil penskalaan instrumen multiple intelligences (MI) pada tipe Thurstone dan Likert dengan pendekatan klasik, 2) mengetahui karakteristik instrument MI pada tipe Thurstone dan Likert pada data asli dan data yang diskalakan, 3) membandingkan karakteristik psikometrik pada kedua tipe data yang sudah diskalakan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif yang pelaksanaannya terdiri dari empat bagian yang saling terkait, yaitu penelitian pengembangan instrumen, penskalaan pada data hasil ujicoba, analisis karakteristik psikometrik instrumen, dan perbandingan karakteristik psikometrik instrumen. Instrumen dikembangkan menggunakan tipe Thurstone dan Likert pada konstruk yang sama. Perbandingan karakteristik psikometrik kedua instrumen dilakukan secara diskriptif. Hasil penskalaan dengan metode paired comparison didapatkan urutan skor stimulus dari yang terendah yaitu: logika matematika, musik, linguistik, kinestetik, naturalis, visual, interpersonal, eksistensial dan intrapersonal. Penskalaan dengan metode summated rating dihasilkan skor terstandar dari yang rendah hingga tinggi pada tiap respons. Terdapat perubahan skor, varian, reliabilitas dan kesalahan baku pengukuran (SEM) dari data asli dengan data yang diskalakan. Koefisien reliabilitas dan SEM instrumen tipe Thurstone lebih rendah dibanding tipe Likert. The study used the quantitative research approach. The activity consisted of: developing instruments, processing the data scaling, analyzing the psychometric characteristics of the instruments, and comparing the psychometric characteristics of them. The instrument was developed using Thurstone and Likert types in the same constructs. The comparison of psychometric characteristics of two types of data was analyzed by descriptive statistic. The result of scaling using paired comparison method are the sequential scores from a low to high on mathematical-logical, musical, linguistic, kinesthetic, natural, visual, interpersonal, existential and intrapersonal inteligence. The scaling using summated rating produce scores that vary in each response. There are changes of variants and standard error of measurement (SEM) after transformed data. The reliability and SEM of the Thurstone type are lower than that of Likert type.Keywords: scaling, multiple intelligence instrument, Thurstone type, Likert type

Pandemi influenza yang terjadi sejak tahun 2009 dan berbagai kejadian bencana karena kondisi geografis Indonesia membutuhkan integrasi komponen sumber daya rumah sakit terintegrasi untuk mengatasi bencana. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan instrumen sumber dayarumah sakit menggunakan data Riset Fasilitas Kesehatan (Risfaskes) 2011 yang memuat komponen terkait manajemen bencana dan pandemi influenza. Instrumen ini dikembangkan dengan prinsip Client Oriented Research Activity, studi literatur serta diskusi pakar dan tim ahli di tingkat lokal dan nasional. Instrumen ini kemudian diintegrasikan ke dalam manajemen bencana dan pandemi influenza dengan pendekatan systematic review. Dalam integrasi ini, instrumen asli mengalami beberapa modifikasimenghasilkan 49 halaman instrumen rumah sakit yang komprehensif. Instrumen terintegrasi ini dapat digunakan untuk mengamati indeks kinerja rumah sakit yang hasil analisis dan simulasinya bermanfaat untuk meningkatkan perencanaan dan kesiapsiagaan menghadapi bencana danpandemi influenza di Indonesia. The aim of this research was to develop an instrument of hospital resources registry using Health Facility Research (Risfaskes) 2011 data which contains components related to disaster management and influenza pandemic. The instrument was developed using Client Oriented Research Activity principles, literature study, and discussion with international and national experts. This instrument was further integrated into disaster management and influenza pandemic using systematic review approach. In this integration, several modifications to the original instrument were made resulting in a comprehensive 49 page hospital instrument. The integrated instrument can be employed to observe hospital’s performance index, from which the analysis and simulation results will also contribute to the improvement of disaster and influenza pandemic planning and preparedness in Indonesia.Key words: Influenza pandemic, instrument, hospital resource, systematic review

Orang Asli is among the marginalized communities in Malaysia which perceived to have a very low performance in various social indicators. Though of numerous efforts of transformational and development programs initiated by the government, there are no specific measurement tool or instrument to evaluate the performance these initiatives as to verify the effectiveness of government policies. This paper aims to propose an index instrument to assess the socio-development of Orang Asli in Malaysia. The development of this index will employ Fuzzy Delphi Method (FDM) to determine the indicators and sub-indicators of the index, and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to determine the weightage of each indicators and sub-indicators. The proposed Orang Asli socio-development index is expected to be the base of government strategies and action plan to provide a better living quality to Orang Asli community in Malaysia.

Penelitian ini tentang penggunaan model BUMDesa sebagai usaha mewujudkan kesejahteraan sekaligus memberikan pendapatan bagi pemeintah desa. Kehadiran BUMDesa diharapkan tidak saja dapat menggerakkan roda perekonomian masyarakat desa, tetapi juga dapat berperan sebagai salah satu instrumen demokratisasi dan juga instrumen sosial untuk mempertahankan dan mengembangkan potensi lokal. BUMDesa sebagai instrument sosial, diharapkan dapat menumbuhkan kembali nilai-nilai sosial lokal, memunculkan keberpihakan dan kepedulian sosial terhadap kelompok-kelompok marginal. BUMDesa juga diharapkan dapat memberikan pendapatan desa karena penyelenggaraan pemerintahan desa diharapkan didukung oleh institusi desa dengan memanfaatkan potensi desa. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah ingin menemukan model pengelolaan unit usaha yang dilakukan BUMDesa “SEJAHTERA” dalam upaya meningkatkan kesejahteraan bagi masyarakat Desa Bleberan. BUMDesa mengelola usaha Pengadaan Air Bersih, Simpan Pinjam dan objek Wisata. Pemasalahannya: Bagaimana model pengelolaan Badan Usaha Milik Desa dalam meningkatkan Pendapatan Asli Desa dan kesejahteraan masyarakat? Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif, dan metode pengumpulan data menggunakan pengamatan terhadap kondisi lingkungan Desa dan BUMDesa, wawancara dengan pengurus unit usaha, pengguna air bersih, pedagang, anggota simpan pinjam, tokoh masyarakat dan pengelola objek wisata. Teknik analisis data menggunakan analisis kualitatif. Tiga unit usaha tersebut mampu menyerap tenaga kerja lokal, dan dapat meningkatkan penghasilan bagi pekerja, pedagang, kelompok usaha dan pemilik home stay, sehingga mampu meningkatkan kesejahteraan masyarakat. Secara kelembagaan pengelolaan BUMDesa SEJAHTERA mampu meningkatkan Pendapatan Asli Desa, memberikan kontribusi keuangan bagi seluruh warga desa

Masyarakat Betawi yang mendiami kota Jakarta mempunyai suatu bentuk ensambel musik yang dinamakan Gambang Kromong. Awal mulanya musik Gambang Kromong dalam pertunjukannya mempergunakan alat musik tranisional yang terdiri dari Gambang, Kromong, Sukong, Tehyan, Kongahyan, Basing/suling, Ningnong, Jutao, Kecrek, Kempul, dan Gong. Seiring dengan perkembangan zaman yang melingkupi kota Jakarta, maka musik tersebut memasukan alat musik Barat dalam pertunjukannya. Pengaruh yang terjali dengan penggunaan alat musik Barat yaitu penambahan beberapa repertoar lagunya yang memasukan lagu keroncong, dangdut, dan pop dalam sajiannya. Hal ini membuat perkembangan musik Gambang Kromong menjadi lebih banyak dinikmati oleh masyarakat pendukungnya dengan sebutan Gambang Kromong Asli dan Kombinasi.AbstractCollaboration of Western Musical Instruments and Trasidional Musical Instruments in Gambang Kromong Betawi. The Betawi people who inhabit the city of Jakarta have a form of a musical ensemble called Gambang Kromong. At first, Gambang Kromong music used a transitional musical instrument consisting of Gambang, Kromong, Sukong, Tehyan, Kongahyan, Basing/flute, Ningnong, Jutao, Kecrek, Kempul, and Gong. Along with the times that surround the city of Jakarta, the music includes Western musical instruments in its performances. The influence that is intertwined with the use of western musical instruments is the addition of several song repertoires that include keroncong, dangdut, and pop songs in the presentation. Abstract Bearing capacity measurements of roads were traditionally carried out using the Benkelman beam. The Benkelman beam measurements provide the maximum vertical deflection of the pavement under 50 kN of wheel load. Nowadays the bearing capacity of public roads is measured with falling weight deflectometers. Falling weight deflectometer measurements provide the full deflection basin. It is convenient to use these high precision instruments on forest roads, but their application is inefficient and costly. The Department of Forest Opening Up developed a new method to measure the full deflection basin with the Benkelman beam. Besides the instrument improvement the authors developed a new method for the processing of the deflection basin data. Results are presented through the case study of a 2nd class opening up forest road.

Abstrak: Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kesalahan konsep pecahan pada mahasiswa dengan menganalisa lebih dalam kesalahan yang mahasiswa lakukan saat mengerjakan beberapa soal cerita dalam bentuk pecahan yang diberikan. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif, dengan mengambil subjek penelitian mahasiswa calon guru SD yang sedang menempuh mata kuliah materi matematika lanjut sebanyak 45 orang. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah tes. Tes yang digunakan merupakan tes uraian pemecahan masalah yang berjumlah lima soal dengan indikator soal yang berbeda-beda. Sedangkan instrumen wawancara digunakan untuk membantu peneliti mengetahui lebih dalam cara berfikir mahasiswa saat mengerjakan tes. Setelah dilakukan analisa ditemukan bahwa kesalahan-kesalahan yang dilakukan mahasiswa dalam menyelesaikan soal bentuk cerita pada pecahan diantaranya: (1) mahasiswa tidak mampu menotasikan bilangan pecahan saat diberikan gambar, (2) tidak mengetahui makna pecahan, (3) tidak bisa menjumlahkan pecahan campuran dengan penyebut berbeda, (4) tidak bisa melakukan operasi pengurangan pecahan campuran, (5) tidak mampu melakukan pembagian bilangan asli dengan pecahan, dan (6) tidak bisa mengubah bentuk pecahan campuran ke pecahan biasa Kata Kunci: Analisis Kesalahan, Pecahan, Mahasiswa Calon Guru SD Abstract: This study discusses the concept of fractions to students through error analysis when working on multiple story problems in the form of fractions. This research is descriptive, by taking the research subject of prospective elementary school teacher students who are taking advanced mathematics courses as many as 45 people. The instruments used were tests. The test used is a problem-solving description test which consists of five questions with different question indicators. While the interview instrument is used to help researchers find out more about the way students think when taking tests. After analyzing it was found that the mistakes made by students in solving questions in the form of stories in fractions of them : (1) students are not able to denote fractions when given a picture, (2) don't know the meaning of fractions, (3) cannot add mixed shards with different denominators, (4) cannot do mixed fraction reduction operations, (5) unable to do the division of natural numbers with fractions, and (6) cannot change the form of mixed fractions to ordinary fractions. Golongan kanak-kanak dan remaja turut berhadapan dengan pengaruh stres dan ianya merupakan ancaman yang serius dalam kalangan murid sekolah. Kajian kes kualitatif ini dilaksanakan untuk mengenal pasti kewujudan dan simptom stres dalam kalangan murid prasekolah Orang Asli. Sampel kajian melibatkan seorang kanak-kanak prasekolah orang asli. Instrumen pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam kajian ini adalah protokol temu bual, senarai semak, pemerhatian dan dokumen. Data transkrip dianalisis dengan menggunakan perisian Nvivo 0.8. Dapatan menunjukkan subjek kajian mengalami stres di tahap skor75 mata berdasarkan Instrumen Pengukuran Stres: Child and Adolescent Survey of Experiences (CASE). Simptom stres yang ditunjukkan oleh subjek kajian adalah masalah Onychophagia. Simptom Onychophagia merupakan habit menggigit kuku dan ia merupakan masalah psiko-emosi (psycho emotional) berkait dengan stres. Kanak-kanak tersebut melakukan tindakan menggigit kuku sewaktu berada dalam tertekan dan tindakan tersebut memberi kesan kepada kesihatan anggota tangan dan amat mempengaruhi perkembangan fisiologi, psikologi dan tingkah laku. Kajian ini memberi implikasi kepada guru-guru prasekolah, ibu bapa dan stakeholder secara proaktif dan kolektif bagi membangunkan strategi daya tindak (coping skills) untuk kanak-kanak orang asli yang mengalami stres.

Media pembelajaran yang digunakan dalam pembelajaran belum sesuai dengan kebutuhan siswa sehingga kurang efektif untuk membantu siswa memahami konsep perkalian bilangan asli. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan produk media pembelajaran Game Online Ular Tangga. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian pengembangan, yaitu Research and Development. Langkah-langkah pengembangan memperhatikan model Hannafin dan Peck, yaitu analisis kebutuhan, desain, pengembangan dan implementasi. Subjek penelitian yaitu siswa kelas III salah satu Sekolah Dasar Negeri di Tebet Timur. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah observasi, wawancara dan angket. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian diketahui bahwa validasi ahli media menunjukkan persentase 86% dengan kriteria sangat baik, validasi ahli materi menunjukkan persentasi 88% dengan kriteria sangat baik, dan validasi ahli bahasa menunjukkan persentase 95% dengan kriteria sangat baik sehingga dapat dikatakan sudah valid dan layak digunakan. The learning media used in learning are not following the needs of students, so they are less effective in helping students understand the concept of multiplication of natural numbers. This study aims to develop the learning media products Snakes and Ladders Online Game. This type of research is development research, namely Research and Development. The development steps were taken by Hannafin and Peck's model. That is analysis, design, development, and implementation. The research subjects were third-grade students of one of the State Elementary Schools in East Tebet. The instruments used are observation, interviews, and questionnaires. Results of the study show that the validation of media experts shows a percentage of 86% with very good criteria, material expert validation shows a percentage of 88% with very good criteria, and linguist validation shows a percentage of 95% with very good criteria so that it can be said to be valid and feasible to use.

La première partie construit une grille contextuelle qui a pour ogjectif de présenter les principaux impacts du développement dans les pays en voie de développement. Certaines tendances du développement telles que la croissance des consommations d'énergie, les trajectoires environnementales, la croissance économique et l'accroissement démographique sont analysées. Puis une analyse globale de modélisation des courbes environnementales de Kuznets et de la prospective du développement est présentée. La deuxième partie présente différents types d'instruments de politiques de protection de l'environnement, ainsi que les enjeux théoriques et les expériences de leur mise en oeuvre dans les pays de l'OCDE, en particulier dans le secteur énergétique. Elle porte également sur les pratiques de politiques-énergie-environnement et leurs impacts environnementaux sur l'économie, sur le rôle des facteurs institutionnels dans la gestion environnementale dans les PADR. Les priorités de la gestion environnementale dans une approche intégrée dans les PADR sont présentées et comparées avec les expériences de gestion environnementale des pays de l'OCDE. Notre étude de cas du secteur électrique au Vietnam dans la troisième partie a pour objectif de faire un inventaire des émissions dans un secteur en croissance très rapide et le plus important émetteur d'émissions atmosphériques et de mener un bilan critique des instruments d'évaluation des politiques environnementales en comparant des approches fondées sur des modèles "bottom-up" et "top-down". Enfin un modèle et un ensemble de scénarios permettant d'évaluer les conséquences économiques et environnementales de l'instauration d'une politique sectorielle dans le contexte d'une économie en transition sont présentés.

Cette thèse porte sur le dôtar-luth à manche long et à deux cordes- un instrument de musique qui est répandu, dans toute sa variabilité, en Asie centrale ainsi que dans la province du khorâssân en Iran. Ce travail envisage la musique dans un sens large qui comprend non seulement son acception stricto sensu, mais aussi l'étude de l'instrument, la gestuelle du jeu, le symbolisme, la mythologie ainsi que de multiples aspects anthropologiques. Après une étude détaillée de l'organologie, des techniques de jeu de l'instrument, puis de la musique, j'ai tenté de démontrer qu'un ensemble hétéroclite d'éléments de nature variée se présente comme les différentes facettes d'une même réalité qui peut être qualifiée de tradition musicale du dotâr
This dissertation is an indepth study of the dotâr, a long necked, two stringed instrument which is available in variable forms in Central Asia and in the province of khorâssân in Iran. This research considers the study of music through a variety of perspectives, focusing not only on the sound product, but also on the physical aspects of the instrument, on performance traditions, on symbolism, mythology and other anthropological implications. La présente thèse porte sur la circulation du rubâb afghan en Asie Centrale et en Occident. Elle s'inscrit dans une perspective anthropologique et historique dont l'objet est de rendre compte de l'évolution organologique et typologique de l'instrument, dans différents pays où il est pratiqué. L'accent est mis sur la genèse de ce luth à table en parchemin, notamment à partir d'analyses comparatives de la morphologie des différents rubâbs centrasiatiques. Grâce à des modélisations et une approche expérimentale innovante, on a examiné les relations structurelles et typologiques entre cet instrument et les autres rubâbs ou luths similaires. On a ainsi pu constater qu’il n’y a aucune filiation entre ces instruments et le rubâb afghan. Un examen approfondi de certaines vièles de ces régions met en évidence des similitudes frappantes avec l’instrument. On a tenté d'apporter une réponse quant à une éventuelle parenté de la vièle jusqu'au luth, hypothèse qui est également envisagée sous l'éclairage de données historiques, philologiques et organologiques. L'analyse comparative des différents instruments repose sur une abondante source iconographique, accompagné de modélisations et d'expérimentations organologiques. Cette recherche souligne les différents types de rubâb afghan, mises en relation avec les exigences des différents répertoires où ils sont utilisés. This thesis focuses on the diffusion of the Afghan rubâb in Central Asia as well as in the occidental Western countries. It is part of an anthropological and historical perspective, which tends account the organological and typological evolution of the instrument in the different countries where it is practiced. The emphasis is placed on the genesis of the parchment sounding board lute, in particular through morphological comparative analyses of various rubâbs bodies from Central Asia. Thanks to the modelings and an innovative and experimental approach we examined the structural and typological relationships between this instrument and other rubâbs or similar lutes. It has thus been found that there is no filiation between these instruments and the Afghan rubâb. A closer look at some of the bowed lutes from these areas highlights striking similarities with the Afghan rubâb. An attempt has been made to answer the question of a possible relationship between one bowed lute and the Afghan rubâb, a hypothesis which is also considered in the light of historical, philological and organological data. The comparative analysis of the various instruments is based on an abundant iconographic source, accompanied by modeling and organological experiments. This research results in a typology of the Afghan rubâbs, in relation with the requirements of the different repertoires where they are used. Since the early 2000s, improvement of the student learning experience in university level laboratory activities in Australia has been sought by the Advancing Science by Enhancing Learning in the Laboratory (ASELL) project. The nation-wide project has made use of the ASELL Student Learning Experience (ASLE) survey to gather data and draw conclusions regarding student perspectives of their learning experiences, using trends observed in the data to inform pedagogy. Analyses of rating scale response format items on the ASLE survey have typically involved an integer value scoring system applied to the response categories. The appropriateness of such integer scoring techniques and the subsequent application of parametric statistical methods to ordered categorical data in this way is contested in statistical literature, which raises questions regarding the validity of ASELL project conclusions drawn in the past. In this thesis, Rasch measurement is applied to a data set of ASLE survey responses, using the true interval scale measures gained to test the validity of the scoring techniques and parametric methods more typically applied to ASLE data. The role of student biases in survey response and ‘objectivity’ of any measures associated with learning experience quality are explored, yielding quantitative models of the student perception of laboratory learning experiences. The thesis culminates in the use of factor analysis to develop a Linear Logistic Test Model for a data set of over 9000 completed ASLE surveys, explaining the responses received as linear combinations of a small number of major factors in the student laboratory learning experience. The model is used to draw pedagogical conclusions from the ASLE survey data set uninfluenced by limitations of the integer scoring techniques usually applied. The work has major implications for valid interpretation of ASLE survey data received both in the past and in future, suggesting that whilst integer scoring methods may be amenable to parametric statistics, the conflation of student dependent and student independent factors limits the generality of any conclusions drawn. Student independent measures obtained from Rasch analysis, however, reveal that the perceived relative quality of a laboratory exercise is largely consistent through the student population sampled. The Linear Logistic Test Model generated reveals a wide range of connections between different facets of the laboratory learning experience and this general perceived learning experience quality, informing effective science pedagogy. Pedagogical conclusions include strong connections between group work and understanding of theoretical content, the advantages of data analysis and individual work in development of more technical or practical skills, evidence for the importance of structuring activities appropriate to the ability level of the students, as well as ways to generate student interest and foster perceptions of a positive overall laboratory learning experience. A need for compromise between teaching objectives and learner preferences is highlighted, noting that the “best” way to design a laboratory activity largely depends on the intended purpose of the exercise.

"Trucks were used later in various positions and strains were measured due to these truck loads. Stresses were calculated from measured strains and compared with analytical stresses calculated based on the design assumptions which are according to AASHTO Standard Specifications. Reasonable agreement between the analytical and experimental results was obtained for dead loads where the steel girders were acting alone without the concrete composite action. Furthermore the diaphragms connecting girder 5 (the instrumented girder) to girder 4 were only loosely connected under the dead loading. Differences in magnitude and distribution pattern, however, were observed for the live loading. These differences are basically due to the conservatism in AASHTO load distribution method as well as the inability of the two dimensional composite beam approach in depicting the actual three dimensional behavior of the bridge system The testing of the bridge was sponsored by Maine Department Of Transportantion, James Chandler is the Bridge Design Engineer. For a high pressure boiler above 1,400 psi (9.7 MPa), the boiler drum level Control and Protection systems serve two distinct, but complementary functions. The Control system needs to control drum level. Protection is done for safety. If the drum level reaches a critical level, the Protection system shuts down the boiler to avoid damage. One must meet ASME Boiler Code requirements, get the job done correctly, and minimize the number of instruments required. By ASME Boiler Code, one must have at least one Boiler Water Gauge Glass. How many Control instruments are needed? If a single boiler drum water level instrument is used and this instrument suffers a failure, there is a problem. Even if two instruments are used and one fails, one does not know which to trust. Logic dictates that one requires a minimum of three Control instruments. Before discussing Protection, it is good to discuss the characteristics of the instruments available:

This paper presents a new instrument for measuring roundness profiles of axially symmetric micro shafts with diameters below 250 micrometers. The instrument will measure form error in cutting tools used for micro machining, small-hole metrology probes, and other high aspect ratio micro structures. This instrument operates on the same physical principle as scanning tunneling microscopes, which measure surface topography using fluctuations in tunneling of electrons between probe and sample. The instrument will measure roundness profiles using a fixed-sensitive-direction arrangement of the detector, similar to macro scale metrology instruments. Challenges resulting from dimensional scaling necessitate an entirely new instrument compared to conventional instruments. We describe the need for this instrument, its working principle, architecture, the design of the traction drive mechanism, and the design of the nano positioning stages.

The mechanical behavior of a rotary nickel-titanium endodontic instrument was evaluated through finite element models. Essential geometric features of blank taper and variable pitch were modeled and their impact on the mechanical performance of instruments was investigated. Simulation results showed that better bending flexibility and higher torsional stiffness can both be obtained on an instrument with a large helix configuration. The results also illustrated that the finite element method can be used to compute the critical load or deformation for the instrument which prompts the sustainable use of the instrument in clinical practices.

Manipulation of large internal organs, e.g., spleen, kidney, and liver, is a demanding but challenging task during laparoscopic surgery using conventional miniature instruments. Recently fingered hand instruments have been proposed for doing this task which are assembled/disassemble inside the patient’s abdomen [1–3]. They are not, however, feasible for use in real surgeries considering the substantial time needed for their setting up process. This paper describes the conceptual design of an effective laparoscopic instrument for manipulation of large human organs. A novel mechanism is presented which enables the instrument to pass through a 10 mm trocar to enter the abdominal cavity when it is closed, and grasp body organs, as large as 80 mm diameter, when it is opened. It is shown that the instrument can be used effectively for laparoscopic surgery operations without the need to an assembling/disassembling procedure.

Modern surgical procedures involve flexible instruments for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The implementation of flexible instruments in surgery necessitates high motion and force fidelity, and good controllability of the tip. However, the positional accuracy and the force transmission of these instruments are jeopardized by the friction and clearance inside the endoscope, and the compliance of the instrument. The objective of this paper is to set up a 3-D flexible multibody model for a surgical instrument inside an endoscope to study its translational and rotational behavior. The 3-D model incorporates all the deformations—axial, torsion, and bending—due to its interaction with the surroundings. The interaction due to the contact is defined along the normal and tangential direction at the contact point. The wall stiffness and damping are defined in the normal direction. Friction is defined along the tangential direction. The calculation of the interaction force and moment is explained with an example. Various simulations were performed to study the behavior of the instrument inside a curved rigid tube. The simulations for the insertion into a 3-D tube defined in a plane were compared for both 2-D and 3-D model. The simulation results from the 3-D model give the same results as the 2-D model. A simulation was carried out for the insertion in a 3-D tube using the 3-D model and the total interaction force on the instrument was analyzed. A 3-D multibody model was set up for the simulation offline rotation. A motion hysteresis of 5° was observed for the chosen configuration. The 3-D multibody model is able to demonstrate the characteristic behavior of the flexible instrument under different scenarios. Both translational and rotational behavior of the instrument can be characterized for the given set of parameters. The developed model will help us to study the effect of various parameters on the motion and force transmission of the instrument.

When evaluating the power consumption of a compressor on a test bed, it is important to evaluate the inaccuracies caused by instruments measuring tolerances. Compressor vendors need to estimate such tolerances when announcing power guarantee figures, while customers need to verify if the machine meets such performance guarantees or not. A method is proposed to assess the resulting uncertainty of the total power consumption of a centrifugal compressor, based on the instruments measuring tolerances for inter-stage pressures, inter-stage temperatures and mass flow. The calculations are based on a Monte Carlo type simulation which generates random sets of inlet/outlet pressures and temperatures for the different compressor stages. Such numbers are generated in order to lie within the range of the expected value ± instrument tolerances. The same technique is used for the mass flow. A numerical example is given, in order to show how single instruments tolerances are cumulated; results may indicate which instrument to select (or discard) in order to obtain reasonable tolerances on the calculated power consumption.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that airborne pathogens and viruses have a detrimental impact on the health and well-being of an individual in an indoor space. Respiratory particles are released as droplets of varying velocities and diameters, where smaller droplets (aerosols) linger in air for prolonged periods, increasing the infection risk of individuals in an enclosed space. The pandemic has raised concerns regarding the safety of musicians due to respiratory particles released through woodwind and brass instruments. A collaboration with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra was pursued to assess the risk of infection and develop strategies to mitigate the spread of respiratory particles using computational fluid dynamics. A coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian modeling approach was employed to examine the airflow patterns and airborne particle pathogen transport induced by the musicians in the music hall. The investigation considered three brass instruments (trumpet, tuba, trombone), without and with a bell covering. It was observed that the dispersion of particles for each instrument depended on the bell design and orientation of the instrument. For example, the trumpet produced a higher concentration of respiratory particles compared to a tuba, which has its tubing wrapped. Additionally, the effect of using bell covers (cloth covering on the opening of the brass instruments) showed that the covers reduced the number of pathogens escaping the instruments by capturing large respiratory particles and reducing the escaping velocity of small particles. Reduced particle velocities at the instrument opening meant that the particles traveled shorter distances, which helped mitigate the spread of virus in the music hall. Moreover, the efficacy of using Plexiglas partitions on the sides and in front of the musicians limited the transmission of pathogens from one musician to another. Overall, the findings of this study helped strategize the location of musicians based on the type of instruments being played and the operating conditions in the music hall to decrease the airborne transmission of the novel Coronavirus.

A new, compact 2 degree-of-freedom mechanism 4.1 mm in diameter suitable for robotically controlled surgical operations is presented. Current commercially available robotically controlled instruments achieve high dexterity defined by three degrees of freedom and relatively confined swept volume at just under 1 cm in diameter. Current smaller diameter instruments result in high part count and large swept volumes (less dexterity). A meso-scale rolling contact gripping mechanism is proposed as an alternative. The manufacturing of the parts is made feasible by Metal Laser Sintering, which can produce parts that are difficult to replicate with traditional manufacturing methods. The resulting instrument has only 6 parts and a small swept volume. Instrument actuation and control by a surgical robotic system is demonstrated.

It is called contracture that a joint’s range of motion is restricted. Range of motion exercise is effective to prevent contracture. However, if range of motion exercise by the physiotherapist is performed, a range of motion will improve, but if time not to exercise is long, contracture will decrease again. Then, a rehabilitation instrument for passive range-of-motion exercise which can use after exercise by the physiotherapist is required. A CPM for a knee is developed as such an instrument, and it is also used for an ankle. But, most of instrument used motors to get a high power. So, those are heavy and large size. Installation and movement of instruments at facilities are difficult, and it is also difficult to use freely at home.

In this paper, a novel simple robotic system is developed for surgical training in minimally invasive surgery (MIS). The robot automatically measures motion data of instruments in real time using internal encoders, without additional sensing mechanisms. Kinematics equations are integrated in the control software to map motor motion to the instrument tip motion. These recorded motion data then can be analyzed in the computer system for objective evaluation using well established criteria. A neural network algorithm is employed in real time as the observer of weight and inertia effects which are compensated through motor control. Experiment results show that this compact robot provides good stability and smooth motion while guiding instruments using surgeon input. The tracking resolution is sufficient for objective evaluation purposes. The robot combines the realistic feel of MIS instruments with the capability of the computer to tabulate objective measures of performance and skill. Its flexibility as a training instrument can be of great benefit in both providing surgeons with much-needed practice and assessing the outcomes of that practice.

The aim of this technical report is to provide detailed information about the long-term stability of the thermometer ASL F200 (WIKA Instruments Limited [1]) that is used as temperature reference to calibrate other temperature sensors in the Laboratory of Building Energy and Indoor Environment at Aalborg University – Department of the Built Environment [2]. This ASL F200 thermometer is regularly sent for recalibration at the “Temperature Laboratory” of the Danish Technological Institute, which is a National Reference Laboratory [3]. In this report, the stability of the thermometer is assessed as the difference in the temperature reading of the instrument at a specific temperature over time. The long-term stability of the ASL F200 thermometer is only assessed here for the first channel “Chan 1” of the instrument. All calculations of this technical report are based on calibrations reports from the National Reference Laboratory of the Danish Technological Institute [3]. The main results of those calibration reports can be found in the Appendix at the end of this document.
