This study is designed to answer one main research question: How could tertiary education quality be redefined and measured through the education production function model in developing countries. The study will use Indonesia as the target country to carry out research activities. Quality of tertiary education has been one of the most frequently discussed topics in relevant fields in academia and human development. As enrollment continuously increases and education systems expand in many developing countries, quality becomes their biggest concern. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide stakeholders a different and more practical approach to reevaluate tertiary education quality through quantifiable variables and to measure quality through educational input, equity and equality, labor market relevance, and system assurance factors.

Human capital theory serves as the guiding theoretical framework for this dissertation. The education production function model is the foundation for quality redefinition. Within the four quantifiable variables, benefit incidence analysis is used to measure equity and equality, economic rate of return is used to measure labor market relevance of the tertiary education system, and returns to investment is used to evaluate how education outputs yield from inputs. The study is designed to have an umbrella structure, with tertiary education quality being at the top of the skeleton and educational input, equity and equality, labor market relevance, and system assurance being the four supporting pillars.

With the redefinition of tertiary education quality, four main research questions will be answered respectively. Educational input in Indonesia has been improving in the past decade; however, it is still behind compared to peer ASEAN countries and countries with similar economic profiles. Indonesia's tertiary education access inequality is mainly caused by socioeconomic differences. The labor market absorbs a majority of tertiary graduates and yields much higher returns at the tertiary level, and it has been responding very positively toward the continuously expanding graduating class. The quality assurance system suffers from shortstaffing, low financial support, low capacity, and weak government support. At its current accrediting pace, Indonesia's tertiary education institutions will not be able to improve as fast as they are willing to.

Концепція «азійського способу виробництва» згадувалася в працях Карла Маркса, проте не отримала належної уваги та залишилася незавершеною. Витоки цієї концепції прослідковуються в працях класиків наукової думки XVIII та XIX століть – Ш. Монтеск’є, А. Сміта, Г. В. Ф. Гегеля. Після смерті Маркса продовжив розвивати цю концепцію К. А. Віттфогель. Цю концепцію можна охарактеризувати як єропоцентричну. В 20-30тих роках ХХ століття в СРСР відбувалася дискусія щодо «азійського способу виробництва», в якій брали участь радянські марксисти та сходознавці. Не дивлячись на відсутність безпосередніх висновків з дискусії, в подальшому висновком стала відмова від концепції на офіційному рівні та створення прогресивної моделі розвитку людства, так званої “п’ятичленки”, тобто моделі з п’яти послідовних формацій. Метою моєї роботи було визначення основних протиріч навколо концепції «азійського способу виробництва» та визначення можливих шляхів вирішення цих протиріч в експертному інтерв’ю. В ході роботи були виявлені ці протиріччя та оформлені у вигляді питань до експертів. Я приходжу до висновку про європоцентричність поглядів дослідників, визначний вплив політичної кон’юнктури на причини та висновки дискусії та вельми високий евристичний потенціал концепції в рамках марксистської теорії.
The concept of the "Asian mode of production" was mentioned in the works of Karl Marx, but did not receive due attention and remained incomplete. The origins of this concept can be traced in the works of the classics of scientific thought of the XVIII and XIX centuries - S. Montesquieu, A. Smith, G. Hegel. After Marx's death, Karl Wittfogel continued to develop this concept. This concept can be described as eurocentric. In the 1920s and 1930s, there was a discussion in the USSR about the "Asian mode of production," in which Soviet marxists and orientalists took part. Despite the lack of direct conclusions from the discussion, the subsequent conclusion was the rejection of the concept at the official level and the creation of a progressive model of human development, the so-called "five members". The aim of my work was to identify the main contradictions surrounding the concept of the "Asian mode of production" and to identify possible ways to resolve these contradictions in an expert interview. During my work, these contradictions were identified and formalized in the form of questions to experts. I come to the conclusion that views of researches were eurocentric, the influence of the political situation on the causes and conclusions of the discussion was significant, and the heuristic potential of the concept within marxist theory is very high.

This thesis discusses the impact of China’s putative rise in East Asian regional production networks (EARPN) with regard to the ICT industry. Many research studies have focused on China’s strengthening military and political power or are devoted to China’s astounding economic achievements vis-à-vis Japan’s recession in the world economy. The tone of much of this literature since the 1990s has been to highlight the ‘danger of the rising China’. However, there is a gap in the scholarly literature regarding the impact of a rising China on EARPNs with regard to the ICT industry. Changes in this industry mark the latest industrial revolution, and the industry itself is characterized by rapid changes and powerful influences in every aspect of the economy. This thesis will analyse the impact China brings to EARPNs because of its rapidly developing ICT industry. To be more specific, it will show to what extent changes in China’s ICT industry (re-)shape existing regional production networks (RPNs) in East Asia, which for a long time saw Japan as the key actor. Moreover, this thesis will also demonstrate whether a revised flying geese paradigm can be applied to EARPNs in terms of the ICT sector. This thesis applies a revised flying geese model to evaluate the impact of the Chinese government’s regional intentions and the Chinese ICT enterprises’ behaviour overseas in EARPNs. Based on a number of cases, this work shows that the rise of China with regard to its ICT industry is establishing China’s position as a regional leader in EARPNs. China’s significant roles both in the region and in the world are even more prominent, which has contributed to directly shaking the role of Japan as the leading goose of the EARPNs. This thesis argues that the essence of the process of catching-up and the characteristics of a dynamic hierarchical division of labour in the EARPNs have not changed simply because of the developments in China with regard to the ICT industry. However, contrary to expectation, this thesis shows that it is too early to conclude that the dynamic hierarchical division of labour has changed, and to see China replace the previous leading goose, either in terms of large amounts of FDI or in terms of capabilities of continuously providing advanced technology. The very complicated international and regional relations that China is pursuing also influence China’s ability to reshape EARPNs. In short, China has not yet become the leader of EARPNs.

Why 'speculation as a mode of production'? The formulation conjoins the two senses of speculation pertinent to this thesis – the speculative praxis of art, and the speculative logic of capital. It also attempts to give a specific critical valence to the phenomenon of the 'creative industries' which was based on the ideological elision of these two registers of the speculative with the goal of founding a new regime of accumulation on their union. Since that time, we have seen the global economic and social crisis displace this idea from the centre of policy-makers' agendas as the always-latent coercive side of 'creativity' is revealed: creativity as a survival strategy for disinvested populations as 'wealthcreators' go on accumulating. At the same time, there are attempts to re-start accumulation on ever more marginal and self-exploiting grounds, at best as homespun alternatives rather than organized challenges to the dominance of abstract value. In this situation, it is more than ever necessary to find the points of convergence between the desires for capital maximization and social emancipation, and ways to disentangle them which the impacts of the crisis may bring to light. I take artistic production as my field of analysis because this is where these ideologies intersect most dramatically. While speculative thought refers mainly to art and aesthetics, particularly in their connection to reimagining social relations, the 'speculative logic of capital' can be broadly defined as the selfexpanding, or self-valorising, dynamic of capital as such – speculation as social form - rather than a subset of it which can be named as 'the financial industry', although finance has specificities which are discussed in their own right. 'Speculation as a mode of production' thus refers to the open-ended processes of art and politics, as well as the overdetermined process of value expansion in capital. It seeks to encompass both a subjective and an objective mode for the social expression of capital in the ongoing era of neoliberalism. This period has witnessed the subjective qualities of creativity, flexibility and innovation become the objective factors of workplace productivity, while objective productivity itself shifts to the indeterminacy and risk associated with 'creative financial instruments' as the primary mode of capital accumulation. This thesis will draw a parallel between contemporary capital and contemporary art as they come to constitute the poles of a society structured around speculation.

Face à la crise urbaine actuelle, conséquence en partie de l'indifférence manifestée par les édiles a l'égard des spécificités locales des questions spatiales, sociales, économiques et écologiques, des modèles d'appropriation de l'espace sont apparus qui doivent être remis en question dans le contexte de la problématique du logement et de l'habitat urbain. Nous avons centré notre étude sur une des modalités du mode de vie en milieu urbain de Rio, précisément celle issue des favelas cariocas, où nous avons cherché à identifier les formes de perception et de conception de ces espaces à travers les pratiques de leurs protagonistes. Notre thèse a été d'aller chercher dans la dynamique socio-spatiale de la favela, tout au long de son processus, ce qu'elle a engendre de plus légitime: cette pluralité qui répond, en la niant, à l'adoption indiscriminée des principes de la modernité. Ce travail propose, à travers une approche compréhensive du quotidien de ces espaces, que l'emploi du terme favela doive être réservé a un phénomène définitif et non provisoire, et qui correspond au lieu propre d'un besoin; des conditions favorables à la manifestation de la socialité y sont nécessaires; et surtout une façon de vivre le quotidien qui représente une production de culture ou une alternative au mode de vie en milieu urbain. Nous souhaitons introduire ici une nouvelle perspective d'analyse des dynamiques socio-spatiales, dont le but est d'intégrer celles-ci au tissu urbain sans désintégrer les principes qui les ont constituées. La présente recherche propose quelques apports théoriques qui n'épuisent certes pas la question urbaine, mais qui lui fournissent certains éléments susceptibles a notre avis de développements ultérieurs, visant d'autres constructions générales ou partielles de la dynamique socio-spatiale des fragments de la ville.

Cette recherche a pour but d'identifier le mode de production qui prévalait au Maghreb à l'époque almohade. Pour ce faire, nous avons essayé d'expliquer la notion du "mode de production ; cette explication fait connaitre en même temps les trois thèses que les chercheurs arabes s'efforcent de défendre, il s'agit de la thèse féodale, de la thèse asiatique et de la thèse tributaire. Pour les départager, nous avons procédé à une enquête sur la nature du régime foncier et des activités agricoles ; d'où il en est ressorti que la propriété étatique dominait les propriétés collectives et privées, ceci influença les formes d'exploitation de ces terres, et ce qui nous intéresse en premier lieu c'est de savoir que la majorité des terres fut exploitée d'après la notion tributaire ou féodale selon que l'état est fort ou faible. Pour parfaire cette enquête sur la base économique nous nous sommes penchés sur les productions agricoles; industrielles et commerciales d'où il est apparu que les techniques employées étaient honorables, que les rapports de production étaient toujours entre exploite et exploitant, et que la division du travail était très poussée dans plusieurs secteurs, ce qui stimula la production qui augmenta sensiblement et profita d'un marché intérieur très vaste, au détriment du commerce extérieur à long rayon. En ce qui concerne la base sociale, et après désignation de ses composantes, nous nous sommes aperçus que la société maghrébine d'alors connaissait bien la stratification sociale l'issue des conflits sociaux donnait ainsi la primauté au mode de production tributaire ou mode féodal.

This Thesis is based on several research and development programs to implement the use of fibre lasers in the manufacturing of medical devices like stents and pacemakers. In general, the medical device manufacturing industry has a high demand for laser micromachining applications. The content of the thesis describes laser micromachining of metallic components with single mode fibre lasers. At the started of the research work for this thesis, most laser machining processes used flash-lamp pumped solid-state lasers for those applications. Reliable laser operation and low maintenance are required to meet the yields and up-time requirements for medical devices, such as stent cutting and pacemaker welding. Many lasers for micromachining applications are configured to operate near the diffraction limited beam performance to achieve very small feature sizes. It is challenging to maintain such a laser system performance in a production environment. The fibre laser provides a number of attractive features that could address the needs to maintain high up-time and high yields: • A single mode fibre laser does not require mirror alignment. • Diode pumped fibre lasers reduce maintenance due to eliminating the lamp change. • The compact air-cooled design helps to save expensive clean room space on the production floor. By 2000 the increases in average laser power extended the use of the fibre lasers into industrial applications such as cutting and welding.. The lasers investigated in this thesis generated 50 W to 200 W of laser power, representing the highest power levels commercially available at that time. For the microcutting of medical implants such as stents and guide wires, kerf width and sidewall surface quality are of special interest. Developing processes capable of achieving these criteria was the primary objective of the research described in this thesis. A secondary concern is the heat affected zone created by the laser machining process. Operation conditions to minimize this effect are also discussed in this thesis. Many microwelding applications in the electronics, telecom and medical device industry require smaller and smaller laser joining areas. The quality of a laser welded joint is very dependant on the temporal and spatial parameters of the laser beam. These parameters must be adjusted to match to the processing speed and the materials being welded. Switching continuous wave fibre lasers can achieve the parameters for processes requiring low average power. However the pulse-to-pulse stability can effect the process and has been investigated. Some welding applications require focus spot diameters in the order of 50 μm and pulse energy levels as low as 10 mJ. The fibre laser’s excellent single mode beam quality provides the desired spot size and laser power density. The research summarized in this thesis was performed to prove that fibre lasers are viable tools for micromachining. This thesis compares fibre laser machining results with those using legacy laser processes and describes ways to improve the quality of the fibre laser machining process.

A 3-D chemical transport model with coupled oxidant-aerosol chemistry (GEOSChem) is used to analyze the influence of recent (2001 to 2010) growth in Asian NOx and Asian SO 2 emission on transpacific transport of Asian particulate matter, especially sulfate, by quantifying and analyzing the details of chemistry and its sequential influence on transpacific transport during spring and summer. From 2001 to 2010, the spring averaged Asian sulfate enhancement in the western US model surface layer increases by 0.01-0.03 [mu]g M-3 (about 4% of the surface sulfate concentration over the US at 2010 emission level). The net chemical production rate increases in the troposphere over Asia but decreases over the Pacific Ocean. The sulfate production pathway shifts toward gas phase production by OH (7-8% increase-China; 2-3% increase-Upper atmosphere Pacific Ocean) with corresponding reductions in aqueous phase production by H202 ; resulting in a switch of the most important production pathway from aqueous production by H202 to gas phase production by OH. Almost doubling the Asian NO. emission during the period has a negligible influence on Asian sulfate enhancement over the US; this change in Asian NOx emission causes the net chemical production rate to increase in the Asian boundary layer, but to decrease in the upper Asian atmosphere, and in the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean and the US. This is because the Asian NOx emission growth strengthens the oxidizing power in the Asian boundary layer to more actively form sulfate (mostly removed by wet scavenging), reducing available SO2 for further production away from the source. The Asian NOx emission growth is the major driver in changing the sulfate production pathways toward the gas phase. The 20% increase in Asian SO 2 emission during the period is the primary driver in increasing Asian sulfate enhancement over the US; this change accelerates net sulfate production rate, and makes a minor contribution to shifting toward gas phase production by OH over the course of the transpacific transport. The calculated sulfate column burden shows a notable increase as a response to the changes in Asian emissions. However, the shifts in sulfate lifetime over China due to changes in Asian SO 2 and/or Asian NO, emission are almost negligible (generally 1-2%), and lifetimes over the upper level Pacific Ocean are generally reduced by 3-4%.

Privately built satellite cities are becoming an increasingly common form of urban development in peri-urban areas of Southeast Asian cities. However, while they are beginning to receive academic attention, the majority of studies focus on design and planning issues and have a limited capacity to fully explain how satellite cities are produced. In this thesis, I investigate the production of satellite cities in Phnom Penh drawing upon recent theoretical advances that critically consider the relational and territorial geographies of urban development. The satellite cities in Phnom Penh are driven by the mobility of urban development capital, concepts and expertise that are predominately intra-Asian in scope. In examining these intra-Asian connections I avoid casting satellite cities as universal, Western urban forms and contribute to debates that problematise the Western-centrism of urban knowledge production. In the late 1990s, Cambodia emerged from several decades of conflict and communism to become more integrated into the regional and global economy. This political and economic transition led to rapid changes in the urban landscape, including the construction of satellite cities. Drawing upon interviews with key informants, I suggest that satellite cities are not simply a result of the government’s incapacity to provide infrastructure and plan for urbanisation, but the state also has an essential role in allowing land acquisitions and encouraging inflows of foreign investment. I examine in detail two satellite cities, one developed by a South Korean and other by an Indonesian company, and suggest that the South Korean company’s activities are underlined by the close relationship between their home country and Cambodia, as well as the supportive role of the South Korean developmental state. In contrast, the Indonesian company pioneered the ‘satellite city’ concept in Indonesia and is now exporting the concept to other Asian countries. A critical examination of the intra-Asian geographies of satellite city production opens up the possibility of viewing Southeast Asian cities on their own terms without relying solely on Western theory.

L’analyse de la mode vestimentaire dans l’URSS khrouchtchévienne permet de saisir l’impact de la conjoncture politico-économique sur la société et la vie quotidienne. La compétition avec l’Occident a pour conséquence l’émergence du concept de la mode socialiste qui visé à normaliser l’apparence dés Soviétiques par le biais de l'éducation du goût. La réforme centrée sur la satisfaction des besoins vestimentaires met en épreuve les capacités de l’économie planifiée d’équilibrer l’offre à la demandé, de prendre en compte les variations de la mode. L'ouverture de la société soviétique vers l’extérieur a pour conséquence la mise en place de canaux de transferts officiels et informels de la mode occidentale. La diversité des tendances de mode et la « culture de pénurie » donnent naissance à des stratégies d’acquisition de vêtements. Studying fashion in USSR under Khrushchev helps to understand the impact of the political and economic situation on the Soviet society and everyday life. The compétition with the West has as a consequence the emergence of socialist fashion concept that aims to normalise the appearance of Soviet people through education of their taste. The reform aimed at satisfying needs in clothes confronts planned economy with the problem to find a balance between the offer and the demand, to take changes in fashion into account. The opening of the Soviet society to the West results in the emergence of official and informal channels of transfers of Western fashion to USSR. The diversity of tendencies in fashion and culture of shortages give a birth to various strategies of clothes acquisition. Consumer cultures formed of various combinations of the strategies reflect not only individual reactions to the situation, but also social stratification and cohesion

The concern of this dissertation is the understanding and improvement of a class of lasers that is responsible for some of the shortest optical pulses available today. In particular, we seek ways to produce from synchronously pumped mode-locked dye laser systems, shorter pulses of higher intensity with improved pulse-to-pulse consistency. Specific topics.that are discussed herein include the study of the role of the pump pulse in synchronously pumped mode-locked lasers, the study of the pulse shaping and shortening due to an intracavity saturable absorber, and the study of a fundamental pulse train instability associated with these lasers.

This dissertation uses the textual materials found in several villages in Pingnan, northeastern Fujian, from 2008 to 2011, to examine the use of texts in rural China during the imperial period. The discussion focuses on the texts produced by local people and used locally. The central theme of the dissertation is to contextualize the rise of textual culture and the spread literate mentality in a marginal society, and explore the relationship between text and society. The dissertation consists of two major parts. Part I covers the period when Pingnan was the northern part of Gutian County, and Part II covers the period around and after the establishment of Pingnan County in 1734. Part I consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 traces the early textual practices in northern Gutian during the Song-Yuan period, and suggests a local perspective of textual culture. Chapter 2 discusses the establishment of official documentation system in the early Ming and its influence on local communities and the production of local texts. Chapter 3 uses a case of a rising family in the late Ming to illustrate the use of textual construction to promote one's social and cultural status. Part II consists of four chapters and each chapter investigates the use of texts in one realm of village life. Chapter 4 starts with the penetration of genealogy compilation and the transformation of social structure. Chapter 5 discusses the political background for the proliferation of stone stelae and other "texts for public display." Chapter 6 examines various kinds of textual materials used in economic activities, from managing lineage properties to land-exchanges and long-distant trades. Chapter 7 explores the creation within the transmission of ritual texts and their responses to the changing requirement of ritual performance. In the conclusion, this dissertation discusses the significance of textual culture in the general transformations and social integrations in northeastern Fujian, and also reconsiders the question of "literacy" in the context of local society.

This dissertation research examines the Korean Wave phenomenon as a social practice of globalization, in which state actors have promoted the transnational expansion of Korean popular culture through creating trans-local hybridization in popular content and intra-regional connections in the production system. This research focused on how three agencies – the government, public broadcasting, and the culture industry – have negotiated their relationships in the process of globalization, and how the power dynamics of these three production sectors have been influenced by Korean society’s politics, economy, geography, and culture. The importance of the national media system was identified in the (re)production of the Korean Wave phenomenon by examining how public broadcasting-centered media ecology has control over the development of the popular music culture within Korean society. The Korean Broadcasting System (KBS)’s weekly show, Music Bank, was the subject of analysis regarding changes in the culture of media production in the phase of globalization. In-depth interviews with media professionals and consumers who became involved in the show production were conducted in order to grasp the patterns that Korean television has generated in the global expansion of local cultural practices. In conclusion, the Korean Wave has rekindled national forces in spreading local popular content globally in three ways: 1) by deconstructing a binary approach of West vs. non-West, and Global vs. Local in order to understand media cultures and practices; 2) by understanding the rise of Northeast Asian media connections as part of a global culture; and 3) by decolonizing non-US/UK state actors to perceive their actions, which hinges on the ongoing centrality of nation-states in the global media sphere.

Entre 1905 et 1908, la branche cinematographique de la societe pathe (plus exactement la compagnie generale de phonographes, cinematographes et appareils de precision) connait une forte industrialisation. Ce phenomene se traduit notamment par la maitrise de l'integralite de la chaine de production : pathe se met a fabriquer sa propre pellicule, a salarier ses metteurs en scene, a controler le tournage, a developper ses films, a les colorier et a s'occuper de leur exploitation, par l'ouverture de salles fixes, le passage a la location et la creation de societes concessionnaires. Ce n'est la qu'un aspect d'une strategie economique globale qui ne se percoit clairement qu'a la lumiere du contexte concurrentiel. Exposee a des compagnies rivales de plus en plus ambitieuses, pathe tente de proteger sa situation oligopolistique. Pour ce faire, elle opere un passage a la production de masse, en meme temps qu'une diversification des genres abordes par ses films. Elle envahit le marche, tant quantitativement que qualitativement. Devant le cout exorbitant de cette politique, elle met en place une organisation sociale qui vise a verrouiller au maximum le mode de production des films. Les phases de controle se multiplient, en meme temps que s'instaure une hierarchie rigide. Tout est prevu pour laisser le moins de place possible a l'improvisation et aux initiatives des metteurs en scene. Les consignes de tournage sont strictes et determinees a l'avance : les scenarios sont concus comme les fiches de fabrication de l'industrie traditionnelle. Une methode d'enregistrement, imposant des contraintes de creation, est elaboree. A tel point que les films conserves aujourd'hui en portent encore les traces, definissant ainsi implicitement le style pathe. Plus que ceux des autres editeurs, les films pathe se caracterisent donc par l'inscription de l'economique dans l'esthetique, c'est-a-dire par les consequences, dans leurs choix artistiques, de l'industrialisation du mode de production.

Cette thèse concerne la production d’étoile lasers monochromatique (LGS pour « laser guide star ») ou polychromatique (PLGS) à l’aide de lasers en impulsions. Ce type de laser pose le problème de la saturation de l’atome de sodium. Cette problématique a été résolu par la mise au point d’un laser dit « Frequency Shifted Feedback » (ou « Modeless ») qui, comme nous l’avons démontré, a l’avantage d’exciter toutes les classes de vitesse de l’atome de sodium, répartissant ainsi l’énergie sur tous les atomes mésosphériques. Nous avons construit une chaine laser comportant un oscillateur, un préamplificateur intra-cavité et un amplificateur délivrant dès à présent une puissance moyenne de 11 W (pour une puissance moyenne de pompe de 60 W) avec des impulsions de 50 ns de largeur temporelle pour un fonctionnement à 10 kHz ; par ailleurs, le rayonnement est spectralement large (il couvre toute la largeur doppler-hyperfine de l’atome) et sans trou de fréquence, condition essentielle pour une excitation efficace des transitions du sodium. Les avantages indéniables que propose cette chaîne laser sont multiples : 1) il n’y a aucune électronique, 2) comme la notion de saut de mode n’a plus réellement de sens dans notre cavité, notre laser est insensible aux vibrations parasites ainsi qu’aux fluctuations de température, 3) notre chaîne laser est très compacte, 4) notre chaîne LSM a aussi l’énorme avantage de pouvoir s’accorder facilement en longueur d’onde pour produire notamment les longueurs d’onde 589, 569 et 660 nm pour les PLGS mais aussi toutes autres longueurs d’onde pour des applications comme le LIDAR, 5) autre point important, son coût est faible. Cette thèse aura aussi été l’occasion d’appréhender le comportement d’un laser FSF à décalage de fréquence intra-cavité. La caractérisation expérimentale du Laser Sans Mode, ainsi que la bibliographie concernant le sujet nous a permis d’apprécier la complexité d’une telle cavité. En se basant sur les modèles numériques développés par les équipes impliquées dans l’étude de ce type de laser (Yatsenko, Kowalski, Bergmann, Nakamura), nous avons modélisé notre cavité dans ses différentes configurations (oscillateur continu, oscillateur & pré-amplificateur intra-cavité, oscillateur impulsionnel). Malgré les approximations effectuées pour simplifier la résolution (raisonnement en densité spectrale de photons), les modèles parviennent à rendre compte de façon satisfaisante des résultats expérimentaux. Ils pourront donc s’avérer utiles pour continuer à optimiser la chaîne que nous avons développée, et dans un effort de prospection sur d’autres milieux à gain ou d’autres configurations de cavité
This thesis concerns the production of monochromatic laser guide star (LGS for "laser guide star”) or polychromatic (PLGS) using pulse lasers. This type of laser must overcome the problem of the saturation of the sodium atom. This problem was solved by the development of a laser called "Frequency Shifted Feedback" (or "Modeless") which, as we have shown, has the advantage of exciting all velicity classes of sodium atom, thus distributing the energy on all mesospheric atoms. We constructed a chain comprising a laser oscillator, an intra-cavity preamplifier and an amplifier delivering now an average power of 11 W (for an average pump power of 60 W) with pulses of 50 ns with a repetition rate of 10 kHz. Furthermore, radiation is spectrally broad (it covers the entire Doppler-hyperfine width of the atom transition) and without frequency hole, essential for efficient excitation of sodium transitions. The undeniable advantages offered by this laser system are many: 1) there are no electronics, 2) as the notion of mode hopping has not really make sense in our cavity, our laser is insensitive to parasitic vibrations as well as temperature fluctuations, 3) our laser system is very compact, 4) our LSM chain also has the huge advantage of being able to easily tune the wavelength to produce particular wavelengths 589, 569 and 660 nm for PLGS but also all other wavelengths for applications such as LIDAR, 5) another important point, its cost is low. This thesis will also have the opportunity to understand the behavior of an FSF laser (Frequency Shifted Feedback). The experimental characterization of this type of laser and the bibliography on the subject has allowed us to appreciate the complexity of such a cavity. Based on numerical models developed by the teams involved in the study of this type of laser (Yatsenko, Kowalski, Bergmann, Nakamura), we modeled our cavity in its various configurations (continuous oscillator, oscillator & intra-cavity preamplifier, pulse oscillator). Despite the approximations to simplify the resolution (spectral density of photons), the models reproduce well the experimental results. They may therefore be useful to further optimize the chain that we have developed, and an exploration effort on other media to gain or other cavity configurations

After the bloody Tiananmen crackdown in 1989, the legitimacy of the Communist Party of China (CCP) suffered a devastating blow among the overseas Chinese (OC). The CCP responded to the challenge by implementing transnational outreach policy in the OC community, which includes substantial efforts to increase the Party’s influence in the overseas Chinese-language media (OCLM). By conducting a qualitative analysis of the evolution of the CCP's OC policy, this thesis finds that the Party has made tremendous progress in achieving the policy’s strategic goals: modernization and transnational legitimacy. The CCP’s increased influence in the OCLM has made crucial contributions to the Party's success in restoring transnational legitimacy in the OC community. This thesis finds that the China News Service (CNS), China's second-largest news agency operating under the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, plays a major role in the CCP's attempt to influence the OCLM and centralize the production of Chinese-language news.

Relatively little is known about the vocal repertoire of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus), and a categorization of basic call types and modifications of these call types by quantitative acoustic parameters is needed to examine acoustic variability within and among call types, to examine individuality, to determine communicative function of calls via playback, to compare species and populations, and to develop rigorous call recognition algorithms for monitoring populations. This study defines an acoustic repertoire of Asian elephants based on acoustic parameters, compares repertoire usage among groups and individuals, and validates structural distinction among call types through comparison of manual and automated classification methods. Recordings were made of captive elephants at the Oregon Zoo in Portland, OR, USA, and of domesticated elephants in Thailand. Acoustic and behavioral data were collected in a variety of social contexts and environmental noise conditions. Calls were classified using perceptual aural cues plus visual inspection of spectrograms, then acoustic features were measured, then automated classification was run. The final repertoire was defined by six basic call types (Bark, Roar, Rumble, Bark, Squeal, Squeal, and Trumpet), five call combinations and modifications with these basic calls forming their constituent parts (Roar-Rumble, Squeal-Squeak, Squeak train, Squeak-Bark, and Trumpet-Roar), and the Blow. Given the consistency of classifications results for calls from geographically and socially disparate subject groups, it seems possible that automated call detection algorithms could be developed for acoustic monitoring of Asian elephants.

In advanced capitalist economies, a considerable proportion of society's labour-power is expended in the performance of unpaid labour in the household. The domestic labour per formed in the homes of the working class, mainly but not exclusively by women, is the subject of this thesis. Part One deals with theoretical questions concerning the existence and nature of domestic labour as a form of production. In it I attempt to develop a Marxist, that is, a historical materialist, analysis of domestic labour that suffers neither from functionalism nor idealism. To a great extent, new theoretical analyses grow out of the critique of already existing ones. The chapters in Part One reflect this: I present a political economy of domestic labour and an analysis of it's historical origin in the context of a critique of both Materialist Feminist theory and the Domestic Labour Debate. Part Two contains three studies in the historical development of domestic labour in 19th and 20th century Britain. Three themes are present throughout: the changing nature of the domestic labour process and the means of production employed; the relationship between working class struggle and the development of household labour; the relationship between the development of domestic labour and the social position of women. My analysis is based on the study of Marxist political economy and secondary source research into the history of wor king class household labour. It's originality lies principally in it's method of approach. To date, studies of domestic labour have generally suffered from theoretical or empirical exclusivity. The development of a detailed and rounded historical materialist analysis through the interaction of historical and theoretical research sets this thesis apart from contributions to the Domestic Labour Debate and other studies in the household labour studies tradition. This approach has led to new conclusions in relation to the political economy, the historical origin, and the historical development, of domestic labour.

The Hmong, in particular, who live in mountainous regions and practice slash and burn agriculture, have suffered from economic and social inequality policies practiced by previous governments. The progressive transformation of their methods of land use, their mode of production and their migrant lifestyle must clearly be understood before any attempt at a sedentary lifestyle with a view to a sustainable development be undertaken. The underprivileged Hmong aspire to better living conditions comparable to those of people living in the plains.

Malgre son importance economique et symbolique, l'industrie de l'habillement (contrairement aux etudes sur le costume) n'a ete que peu etudiee en france. Il s'agit ici de comprendre son developpement a paris depuis la fin du xixe siecle en le comparant avec celui de l'industrie new-yorkaise. L'analyse porte sur les facteurs qui ont fait de ce secteur un important employeur de travailleurs immigres. La premiere partie est consacree a une analyse de la methode comparative et de ce que j'appelle un "structuralisme poststructural", leur utilite pour l'histoire comme discipline et pour les etudes sur les migrations en particulier. La deuxieme partie compare l'industrie de la confection dans ces deux villes, sur la longue duree d'un siecle. La troisieme partie examine en detail les conditions de travail, la place des immigre(e)s dans ce domaine, et analyse les rapports interethniques induits par cette "cohabitation industrielle"
In spite of its economic and symbolic importance, the garment industry (unlike fashion per se) has been little studied in france. This thesis examines the development of this industry in paris since the late 19th century, comparing it with the new york case and stressing those factors which have led the industry to be such an important employer of immigrant workers. Part i presents a reflection on the comparative method and what i call "poststructural structuralism", showing their importance for the discipline of history and for migration studies in particular. Part ii compares the garment industry in the two cities over the last century. Part iii looks at labor conditions in the trade, the place of immigrants and women in the industry and analyses interethnic relations within this "industrial cohabitation"

Le paradoxe gabonais impose une rupture epistemologique, quant a la problematique du developpement sous-developpement. En effet, il n'est plus possible aujourd'hui de penser que le developpement de l'economie capitaliste et des rapports de production marchands au gabon entraine un epanouissement economique et social des populations locales. Au contraire, le developpement spectaculaire du secteur capitaliste gabonais se fait sur un processus dialectique de sous-developpement des communautes locales. Si le secteur capitaliste progresse, c'est parce qu'il opere, directement et indirectement, une mise accrue au travail salarie d' hommes et de femmes significativement nourris et entretenus par un secteur precolonial producteur de subsistances quotidiennes. Cette prise en charge se fait au nom des regles et des ideologies traditionnelles de la reciprocite, de la solidarite parentale et du collectivisme. Le sous-developpement ne veut pas dire que les populations gabonaises soient arrierees. Le sous-developpement signifie que les populations locales, parce que positivement organisees depuis des siecles dans leur economie et dans leurs structures sociales de reproduction, sont habilement et structurellement depossedees des fruits de cette organisation. Ces fruits sont transferes par perequation, a travers les mecanismes economiques et sociaux de l'articulation des modes de production, vers les caisses des entrepreneurs capitalistes. En termes de gestion capitaliste des entreprises, cette depossession est l'acquisition d'une force de travail dont la valeur reelle est tendanciellement sous-estimee ou sous-evaluee ; en definitive, une force de travail gabonaise structurellement bon marche, parce que produite et reproduite dans la communaute domestique. Les theories liberales doivent ceder la place a la theorie de l'articulation des modes de production qui montre que la logique du developpement sous-developpement gabonais s'edifie comme mode de production a part entiere. Celui-ci est sous-developpe et continuera a fonctionner tel quel
The gabon paradox imposes an epistemological rupture in relation to the problem of development and underdevelopment. That is to say it is no longer possible to day to think that the capitalist economical development and the commercial production relations in gabon may cause economic and social prosperity for the local inhabitants. On contrary, the spectacular development of the gabon capitalist sector is based on the dialectic process of the underdevelopment of the local communities. If the capitalist sector progresses, it is because it oprates, directly and indirectly, by putting to work wage earners : men and women who are essentially nourished and sustained by a pre-colonial sector which produces daily subsistence. This is done in the name of traditional duties and ideologies of reciprocity, solidarity and collectivism. Underdevelopment does not mean that the gabon people are backward but signifies that the local populations who have been well organized in their economy and in their social reproductory structures for centuries have been systematically and stucturally depossessed of the fruits of this organisation. Theses fruits are transfered to the treasury of the capitalist entrepreneurs through the economic and social mechanisms of articulation of the modes of production. According to the capitalist management entreprises, this depossession is the acquisition of a labour power whose real value is underestimated ; finaly, a structurally cheap labour power, because it is produced and reproduced within the domestic community. The dialectic articulation theory of modes of production should replace the liberal theories. This new theory displays that the logic of gabon development underdevelopment contitutes a complete underdeveloped mode of production which will continue to fuction on theses basis

This study explores the literature of late Choson in its material context, examining how the physical aspects of the production and circulation of texts impacted the practice of writing. By analyzing various travelogues from Beijing (yonhaengnok) and private collections (munjip) from the late seventeenth to the early nineteenth century, I examine how transcultural contacts across borders and changing textual environments influenced intellectual circles and literary trends in late Choson Korea. Interpreting the literary text as the material product of a culture, my study shifts the emphasis from the author as the creator of a text to the editors, publishers, collectors, and readers, through whose hands a text is reshaped and given new meaning. In light of the concept of social authorship, the written culture of late Choson will be revisited in relation to complex networks of social interactions. The print and manuscript culture of the day, socio-political groups that the author belonged to, the book market, and the government policies of that time provide interesting information on the practices of literary production, based on the larger cultural dynamics of East Asia. This dissertation revolves around a series of questions about circulation networks and their impact. In regard to the social and cultural condition of literary production in the eighteenth century, I examine transnational interactions with foreign intellectuals as well as collective coterie activities of reading and writing among the literati in Seoul. How did the flourishing of print culture of the Jiangnan area and the book markets in Beijing change the textual dynamics of Korea? Did the government censorship carried out by the Qing and the Choson governments effectively control the circulation of books? How did the Choson literati consume the foreign books and why did they form so many literary communities in Seoul? By investigating the large scope of these textual situations, I explore how the transcultural contacts "across borders" and the changing textual environments influenced intellectual circles and literary trends in late Choson. With respect to textual dynamics, I emphasize the various "informal networks" that have been placed at the center of book reception and consumption. For example, a number of book brokers in the Qing and Choson facilitated the distribution of books, and the sharing of manuscripts among friends in literary coteries was influential in the shaping of new literary tastes and public culture. These unconventional routes outside of established channels functioned as the actual key drivers of book culture in late Choson. My argument throughout this dissertation is that "informal circulation" is a central, rather than marginal, feature of eighteenth-century book culture and literary production. Through a specific case study of a literatus-official, Yi Tong-mu (1741-1793), my dissertation addresses these issues in three parts that consist of seven chapters: (1) Part One, "Social Authorship and Manuscript Production," examines how the writings of Yi Tong-mu were constructed and transmitted through a complex of social interactions and how the physical aspects of texts inform various transactions of human and non-human agencies in the production of texts. (2) Part Two, "The Location of Texts: Circulation of Books, Censorship, and Community Activities" traces how social networks among the domestic literati as well as among foreign intellectuals facilitated the circulation of books. First, I examine the large scope of transnational interaction between China and Korea, and the literary inquisition carried out by the Choson government in response to the changing textual environment. This is followed by a discussion of the poetry communities in Seoul, in which the Choson literati shared their reading practices and produced their common aesthetic tastes in their writings. (3) Part Three, "Making Meaning: Reading Self and Social Discourses," examines how Yi Tong-mu read books from the Ming and the Qing--such as those by Yuan Hongdao of the Ming and Wang Shizhen of the Qing--and wrote his own poetry and literary criticism and embodied his interpretive activities in his own works.

This PhD by Publication is a contribution to art and art theory through the book Art and Value in the context of the practice of the Freee art collective. This thesis situates Art and Value within contemporary art practices and debates. Art and Value addresses itself directly to misrecognitions of the relationship between art and capitalism within the humanities and social sciences. The conviction that art was a commercial activity had penetrated the discourses of contemporary art in the UK, Western Europe and North America since the 1960s and therefore constituted, in part, the milieu in and against which Freee has operated since 2004. The historical study of the emergence of the theory of art’s economic exceptionalism in classical political economy gives an alternative historical framework in which to situate the discussion of art’s relationship to capitalism. The rationale for my economic analysis of art – comprising separate critiques of the economics of art in classical, neoclassical, welfare and Marxist economics – is to reset the coordinates for thinking politically about art’s relationship to capitalism. Art and Value does not claim to cover every aspect of art’s encounter with capitalism, which would require sociological, semiotic, psychoanalytic, geographical, philosophical and historical inquiries, at the very least, but establishes the economic groundwork for the interdisciplinary study of art’s relationship to capitalism. Economic analysis provides this ground; not because economics is the master discipline of the social sciences, but because the question of art’s relationship to capitalism must be understood, first and foremost, by understanding what capitalism is and how the production of art has or has not been incorporated into the capitalist mode of production.

This thesis performs a social mapping of the field of British-Asian independent film between 1976 and 1996. Through a practical application of Pierre Bourdieu's methodological approach to reading cultural production, this research examines a series of film production contexts as a means of revealing refracted homologies between particular texts, the cultural field and the broader field of power in Britain. The empirical core of the thesis identifies and examines five different film practices: an excluded film practice, an institutional film practice, a theoretical film practice, a successful film practice and contemporary film practices. The selected films are primarily analysed as cultural "barometers" of the given social contexts, providing for each of the empirical chapters a basis from which to map the genesis of a particular film practice. By mapping the relations between cultural production, the key social events and forces for change as actualised within the films, each empirical chapter aims to reveal the dominant logic which informed given film practices. Ethnicity, instead of functioning as the essential object of analysis, provides this research with a starting point and the key sampling device to map the British independent film field. In principal, this thesis examines the ways in which images of "ethnic minorities" in the British independent film field have been both liberated and regulated through the presence of dominant dispositions which have structured the field generating, and consecrating particular film-making practices over and above others.
