The discovery, with HST imaging, of proto–globular cluster candidates in NGC 1275 (Holtzman et al. 1992) was regarded by many as a major success of the merger model for globular cluster formation (e.g. Ashman & Zepf 1992) and has been cited in support of the idea that elliptical galaxies form from the merger of two or more spiral galaxies. A prediction of the Ashman & Zepf model was that newly-formed clusters should be observable in currently or recently merging systems. The NGC 1275 clusters constitute an important test of globular cluster formation models. NGC 1275 is the peculiar cD galaxy at the center of the Perseus cluster. It shows evidence for a merger history and may indeed be undergoing a merger at present. It also has one of the largest known cooling flows.

We review the observed properties of globular cluster systems and their implications for models of galaxy formation. Observations show that globular clusters form in gas-rich mergers, and that bimodal metallicity distributions are common in the globular cluster systems of ellipticals, with the metal-poor population more extended than the metal-rich one. These are three of the four predictions of the simple merger model of Ashman & Zepf (1992). The fourth prediction concerns the properties of the globular cluster systems of spirals, and is still to be tested by observation. Adopting Occam's razor, the confirmation of the fundamental predictions of the merger model from both young and old globular cluster systems is strong evidence that typical elliptical galaxies formed from the mergers of spiral galaxies. However, the simplifying assumptions of the Ashman-Zepf merger model limit its applicability to certain complex situations such as the formation of cD galaxies. We conclude this review by introducing new observational and theoretical programs that will further the understanding of the physical mechanisms of globular cluster and galaxy formation.

Studies of the mass–to–light ratio M/L as a function of radius in a galaxy usually focus on: a) the existence of dark matter in and around galaxies, and b) the presence of massive black holes in their nuclei. Here we concentrate on elliptical galaxies, and summarize some recent work in both areas. We refer to more extensive reviews for earlier developments (Schwarzschild, 1954; Trimble, 1987; Ashman, 1992; Kormendy, 1993). A third area of interest is the behavior of the stellar populations as a function of radius, and its effect on M/L (e.g., Peletier, 1989). We will not discuss this here.

The merger model for elliptical galaxy formation has received increasing attention since it was first suggested by Toomre & Toomre (1972). Van den Bergh (1984) pointed out a problem with the idea that elliptical galaxies were formed by simply combining two, or more, spiral galaxies. He noted that the specific frequency (SN, number of globular clusters per unit galaxy light) is systematically lower for spirals than for ellipticals. Schweizer (1987) suggested that globular clusters might be expected to form in the merger process, thereby alleviating or possibly eliminating the SN problem. Ashman & Zepf (1992) developed this idea into a merger model for globular cluster formation with testable predictions.

The extent of direct stimulation by spermine of reactions catalysed by nuclear N1 and N2 protein kinases purified from liver and prostate depends critically on the nature of the protein substrate. The chemically inert Co(NH3)36+ ion exerts effects on protein kinase reactions similar to those of spermidine or spermine. This enhancement of the phosphorylation of various protein substrates by polyamines or Co(NH3)63+ by purified nuclear protein kinase preparations was studied in relation to effects of temperature, pH and other factors. The results provide further support for our hypothesis [Ahmed, Wilson, Goueli & Williams-Ashman (1978) Biochem. J. 176, 739-750] that the enhancement of certain protein kinase reactions by polycations relates primarily to their interaction with the protein substrate, yielding more favourable conformations for phosphorylation by the protein kinase, rather than a direct effect on its catalytic activity.

The 1982 camp horror musical Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of a meek little flower shop attendant named Seymour, who comes across a novelty carnivorous plant that eats human blood. The talking plant preys on Seymour’s infatuation with his beautiful co-worker Audrey to radicalize him into feeding the plant ‘fresh’ bodies. Building on the work of theatre scholar Michael Chemers, who asserts that stage monsters represent larger social and political anxieties of their time, this article identifies Seymour, the normal, white, heterosexual everyman, as the real ‘monster’ of the musical. Thus, the musical’s creators, Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, exposed the monstrousness of normativity at the poignant moment in American culture, during the early years of the conservative Reagan administration. This article uses José Muñoz’s theory of ‘disidentification’, a strategy employed by marginalized people working ‘on and against dominant ideology’ to analyse the creators’ didactic and subversive strategy.

Ashman & Zepf (1992) developed this idea into a merger model for GC formation with testable predictions.We recently examined this model in the light of new HST and ground-based imaging data on the blue and red sub-populations of GCs in elliptical galaxies (Forbes, Brodie & Grillmair 1997). We concluded that the merger model for GC formation has serious problems, particularly in explaining the characteristics of GCs in giant elliptical galaxies with high SN. A multi-phase collapse scenario was suggested as more consistent with the available evidence.

Praktik Kerja Lapangan (PKL) adalah perwujudan mahasiswa/i dalam menerapkan ilmu yang diperoleh ketika mengikuti perkuliahan sehingga bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan mahasiswa/i dalam mengembangkan pola pikir, menuangkan ide, dan memperoleh wawasan agar menjadi tenaga kerja yang terampil dan berkualitas. Praktikan melaksanakan Praktik Kerja Lapangan yang kedua di Rumah Publik Terpadu YAFSI. Adapun permasalahan yang dihadapi oleh masyarakat anggota Rumah Publik Terpadu YAFSI adalah pemenuhan terhadap kebutuhan dan mengatasi resiko perubahan iklim. Atas permasalahan tersebut, praktikan turut serta dalam pelatihan ecoprint yang merupakan bentuk literasi dan adapatasi perubahan iklim yang inklusif. Penulis menggunakan metode yang disampaikan oleh Kirst-Ashman (2010) mengenai level praktikan pekerja sosial di level mezzo, yaitu unit intervensinya merupakan kelompok dengan metode group work. Adapun yang menjadi hasil dari Praktik Lapangan Kerja yang kedua ini diharapkan agar kelompok yang menjadi sasaran utama program pelatihan ecoprint menjadi kelompok yang dapat berjalan secara mandiri. Ecoprint merupakan salah satu jenis batik yang metode pembuatannya memanfaatkan pewarna alami dari tannin atau zat warna daun, akar, atau batang yang ditelakkan pada sehelai kain kemudian kain tersebut direbus.

Peter Kunze’s book Staging a Comeback: Broadway, Hollywood, and the Disney Renaissance is a (overwhelmingly) well-researched study of the transmedial migration of popular narratives in the 1980s and the 1990s. Focused on Disney’s appropriation of the Broadway integrated musical (H. Ashman, A. Menken), the study demonstrates how the musical theatre conventions improved the quality of Disney’s main product — the animated film. Kunze engages in close reading of an extended episode from the history of cultural production (the Disney Renaissance), showing the complexity and unpredictability of various media convergences. For instance, the book reconfigures the roles of managerial and creative labourers behind the Disney transformation, wittily (and convincingly) bringing to the forefront 1982 as annus mirabilis, which triggered immense changes in the cultural sector. After discussing Disney's appropriation of the musical Broadway, the book reveals how the updated animated musical comes back to the theatrical stage and transforms ‘respectable’ Broadway by alternative styles and agendas (Julie Taymor’s The Lion King). Apart from other sources, the research uses hardto- access archival materials, the author's interviews with the practitioners and their entourage.

Objective: The main aim of this study was to investigate levels of total aflatoxin and aflatoxin M1 in bokina, a homemade non-alcoholic beverage prepared from dairy milk, millet and sugar.Methods: Bokina, dairy milk and millet were purchased monthly over a period of 7 months from bokina producers at Ashaiman and Nima, in Ghana. Total aflatoxin and aflatoxin M1 levels in these samples were measured using a fluorometric procedure and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography.Results: Aflatoxin levels in bokina samples ranged from 1.0 to 21.0 ppb for Ashaiman samples and 1.0 to 23.0 ppb for Nima samples. Out of 21 samples from each site 1 from Ashiaman and 2 from Nima had levels total aflatoxin above the acceptable limit of 20 ppb. Similarly, total aflatoxin levels millet samples ranged from 1.0 to 55.0 ppb for Ashaiman and 5.0 to 53.0 ppb for Nima samples, with 2 samples from Ashiaman and 6 from Nima having levels above 20ppb. The levels of Aflatoxin M1 in milk ranged from 0.09 to 6.20 ppb for Ashaiman samples and 0.13 to 12.55 ppb for Nima samples. Out of the samples, 12 from Ashiaman and 10 from Nima (n=21) had levels of Aflatoxin M1 above the acceptable limit of 0.5 ppb.Conclusion: Bokina samples tested were contaminated with aflatoxin. All doses of aflatoxin have a cumulative effect on the risk of cancer. Therefore, farmers and bokina producers must be educated on good storage practices and monitored to protect the public from aflatoxin exposure and toxicity.

Purpose. The purpose of this retrospective case series is to describe and compare different surgical techniques that can be utilized to augment the keratinized soft tissue around implant-supported overdentures.Materials and Methods. The data set was extracted as deidentified information from the routine treatment of patients at the Ashman Department of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at New York University College of Dentistry. Eight edentulous patients were selected to be included in this study. Patients were treated for lack of keratinized tissue prior to implant placement, during the second stage surgery, and after delivery of the final prosthesis.Results. All 8 patients in this study were wearing a complete maxillary and/or mandibular denture for at least a year before the time of the surgery. One of the following surgical techniques was utilized to increase the amount of keratinized tissue: apically positioned flap (APF), pedicle graft (PG), connective tissue graft (CTG), or free gingival graft (FGG).Conclusions. The amount of keratinized tissue should be taken into consideration when planning for implant-supported overdentures. The apical repositioning flap is an effective approach to increase the width of keratinized tissue prior to the implant placement.

AbstractGlobular clusters (GCs) are excellent tracers for the formation, assembly and evolutionary history of their host galaxies. However, their origin and their role in galaxy evolution are still unclear. There are accumulating evidences that a significant fraction of GCs in massive galaxies (e.g., M 31) are accreted during their assembly history (e.g., Mackey et al. 2010). In this contribution, we report the discovery of a possible stream of accreted GCs in M 31 using data from the literature. Unlike previous substructures of GCs identified as clumps in the phase and metallicity space (Ashman, Keith & Christina 1993), the members of this stream are widely spread but tightly correlated in the position-velocity space (see Fig. 1). The tight correlation suggests that they possibly follow very similar orbits. A number of stellar streams have been discovered in the outer halo of M 31 (e.g., Ibata et al. 2001; McConnachie et al. 2009), one of which may be physically associated with the GC stream. If the association is established, it will not only provide a key evidence for accretion origins of some GCs in M 31, but also place a strong constraint on the mass distribution of M 31.

ABSTRACT We have recently demonstrated that simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) Nef binds to the ζ chain of the T-cell receptor (TCR), leading to its down-modulation from T-cell surfaces (I. Bell, C. Ashman, J. Maughan, E. Hooker, F. Cook, and T. A. Reinhart, J. Gen. Virol. 79:2717–2727, 1998). Using a panel of human as well as rhesus macaque TCR ζ cytoplasmic domain mutants, we have identified in this report two linear peptides in the cytoplasmic domain of TCR ζ which independently interact with SIV Nef. Each SIV Nef interaction domain was sufficient in the absence of the other for interaction with SIV Nef in a yeast two-hybrid assay. In parallel, we demonstrated that Nef down-modulation of CD8-TCR ζ fusion proteins containing full-length or truncated portions of the TCR ζ cytoplasmic domain occurs in transiently transfected 293T cells. Furthermore, using proteins expressed in Escherichia coli, a glutathioneS-transferase–Nef fusion protein coprecipitated histidine-tagged portions of the TCR ζ cytoplasmic domain which contained SNID-1 or SNID-2. The peptides targeted by SIV Nef, YNELNL and YSEIGMKGERRR, are portions of the first and second of three immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motifs which are important in signal transduction, thymocyte development, and TCR biogenesis. These results demonstrate that SIV Nef binds to two distinct domains on TCR ζ in the absence of other T-cell-specific factors, and that interaction with either domain is sufficient to cause down-modulation of TCR ζ.

Введение. Фибрилляция предсердий (ФП) является наиболее распространенной аритмией, для которой характерно возрастающее экономическое бремя на систему здравоохранения. Диагностика фенотипа предсердной кардиомиопатии (ПКМ) и внутрипредсердной электрической дисфункции, ассоциированных с развитием ФП и высокой частотой рецидивов аритмии, инсульта и деменции, имеет решающее значение в прогнозе и выборе тактики лечения. Цель. Изучение значимости параметров Р-волны для диагностики ПКМ и выявление независимых ЭКГ-предикторов риска развития ФП. Материалы и методы. В пилотное исследование включили 59 пациентов (I–III функциональный класс по NYHA; медиана возраста 61 [56; 73] год; 36 (61%) мужчин; фракция выброса левого желудочка (ФВ ЛЖ) 53 [58; 62] %) с ЭхоКГ- и/или МРТ-критериями ПКМ. Период наблюдения составил 28 [19; 39] месяцев. При синусовом ритме анализировали цифровую поверхностную ЭКГ в 12 отведениях (амплитуда, длительность, электрическая ось и площадь Р-волны, морфология Р-зубца и PR интервал). Конечной точкой в исследовании принят первый предсердный тахиаритмический эпизод – пароксизм ФП (конечная точка считалась достигнутой в случае обнаружения устойчивой ФП на ЭКГ или ХМ). Результаты. У пациентов с впервые возникшей ФП (n=27) выявлены расширение волны P в отведении aVF (138±9 мс против 116±10 мс; p=0,0001) и большая площадь зубца P в отведении II (4,5±1,2 ед. Ашмана против 2,0±0,9 ед. Ашмана; p=0,0001) в сравнении с ЭКГ пациентов без ФП (n=32). Межпредсердная блокада 3-й ст. наблюдалась у 92,6% (25 из 27) лиц с ФП и у 9,4% (3 из 32) пациентов без ФП (p<0,005). Частичная межпредсердная блокада выявлена у 31 (52,5%) пациента – у 29 из 32 лиц без ФП (90,6%) и у 2 из 27 с ФП (7,41%). Размер и индекс объема ЛП, предсердная электрическая ось и ФВ ЛЖ значимо не различались в группах (+ФП vs –ФП). В результате однофакторного логистического регрессионного анализа выявлены два независимых предиктора риска ФП: возраст (OR 2,08 [1,23; 4,16]; p=0,035) и площадь зубца P во II отведении ЭКГ (ОR 3,54 [1,11; 12,5]; p=0,034). Для классификации риска впервые возникшей ФП с помощью ROC-анализа определены оптимальная точка отсечения площади зубца P в отведении II, значение которой составило Ра ≥1,49 ед. Ашмана (AUC=0,748; p=0,001), и пороговое значение возраста ≥68 лет (AUC=0,697; p=0,005). Заключение. Атриальное ремоделирование и электрофизиологические изменения у пациентов с ПКМ отражаются на ЭКГ: изменения морфологии и длительности Р-волны в виде межпредсердной блокады (частичной или полной) являются специфическими облигатными признаками электрического фенотипа ПКМ. Полная межпредсердная блокада (по данным многофакторного регрессионного анализа когорты пациентов с ПКМ) является независимым предиктором атриальной электрической дисфункции с высоким риском развития ФП. Introduction. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia that is characterized by an increasing economic burden on the healthcare system. Phenotype diagnostics of the atrial cardiomyopathy (ACM) and interatrial electrical dysfunction associated with AF and high recurrence rates of arrhythmia, stroke, and dementia determines the decisive importance in the prognosis and choice of treatment tactics. Purpose. To study P-wave parameters significance in ACM diagnosis and to detect new atrial ECG markers as independent predictors of AF risk. Materials and methods. The pilot study included 59 patients (NYHA functional class I–III; median age 61 [56; 73] years; 36 (61%) male; LVEF 53 [58; 62] %) with echocardiography and/or MRI criteria for ACM. The follow up period was 28 [19; 39] months. In sinus rhythm, a digital surface ECG was analyzed in 12 leads (amplitude, duration, electrical axis and area of the P wave, P wave morphology and PR interval). As the end point of the study, the first atrial tachyarrhythmic episode, AF event, was assumed (the end point was considered to be achieved in case of stable AF detection on ECG or HM). Results. Patients (pts) with new-onset AF (n=27) showed P wave widening in lead aVF (138±9 ms vs 116±10 ms; p=0.0001) and a larger P wave area in lead II (4.5±1.2 Ashman units vs. 2.0±0.9 Ashman units; p=0.0001) compared with pts ECG with no AF (n=32). Interatrial 3rd degree block (complete) was observed in 92.6% (25 of 27) of pts with AF and 9.4% (3 of 32) of pts with no AF (p<0.005). Partial interatrial block was detected in 31 (52.5%) pts: 29 of 32 persons with no AF, and in 2 of 27 with AF. LA size and LA volume index, atrial electrical axis, and LV EF did not differ significantly between the groups (+AF vs –AF). As a result of univariate logistic regression analysis, two independent predictors of AF risk were identified: age (OR 2.08 [1.23; 4.16]; p=0.035) and P wave area in lead II ECG (OR: 3.54 [1.11; 12.5]; p=0.034). To classify the risk of new-onset AF using ROC analysis, the optimal cut-off point for the P wave area in lead II was determined, the value was Pa ≥1.49 Ashman units (AUC=0.748; p=0.001) and an age threshold of ≥68 years (AUC=0.697; p=0.005). Conclusion. ACM atrial remodeling and electrophysiological changes are reflected on ECG: changes in P-wave morphology and duration in the form of interatrial block (partial or complete) are specific obligatory signs of ACM electrical phenotype. Complete interatrial block (according to multivariate regression analysis of endpoint for ACM pts cohort) is an independent predictor of atrial electrical dysfunction with high AF risk.

Eponyms are widely represented in technical, social and natural sciences. Electrocardiography terms, named after the researcher who first described them, have not been summarized in one place until now. Wellens syndrome (Henrick Joan Joost Wellens, Dutch cardiologist) refers to a subgroup of patients with unstable angina who are at risk of developing an anterior myocardial infarction. In 2008, the Dutch cardiologist Robert Jan de Winter described a unique electrocardiographic (ECG) finding for proximal left anterior descending artery occlusion, named de Winter's pattern.Smith-Sgarbossa criteria (Elena Sgarbossa, Stephen Smith) are used to recognize acute myocardial infarction in patients with left bundle branch block. Schamroth's sign (Abraham Leo Schamroth, South African cardiologist) is an indirect ECG finding that indicates chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW) was named after the doctors who in 1930. first described the syndrome of short PR interval and abnormal QRS complexes, associated with paroxysmal tachycardia (Louis Wolff, John Parkinson, Paul Dudley White). S1Q3T3 or McGinn-White sign (Sylvester McGinn and Paul White) was first described in 1935. as an ECG finding in support of acute pulmonary heart disease. Second degree AV blocks could be type Wenckebach (Karel Frederik Wenckebach, Dutch anatomist) or type Mobitz (Woldemar Mobitz, Russian-German physician). Ashman's phenomenon (Richard F. Ashman, American physiologist) is a simple ECG manifestation of conduction disturbances, caused by a change in frequency. Bix's rule (Harold Bix) is used to recognize supraventricular tachycardia. Brugada syndrome (Pedro and Josep Brugada) is a congenital channelopathy of sodium channels, with a high risk of sudden cardiac arrest. TP segment's down-sloping in the early stage of pericarditis is called Spodick's sign (David H. Spodick, American cardiologist).

Active silicate materials have good adsorption and passivation effects on heavy metal pollutants. The experimental conditions for the preparation of active silicate heavy metal adsorbent (ASHMA) and the adsorption of Cu(II) by ASHMA were investigated. The optimum preparation conditions of ASHMA were as follows: 200 mesh quartz sand as the raw material, NaOH as an activating agent, NaOH/quartz sand = 0.45 (mass fraction), and calcination at 600 °C for 60 min. Under these conditions, the active silicon content of the adsorbent was 22.38% and the utilization efficiency of NaOH reached 89.11%. The adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) on the ASHMA was analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, which provided fits of 0.99 and 0.98, respectively. The separation coefficient (RL) and adsorption constant (n) showed that the adsorbent favored the adsorption of Cu(II), and the maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) estimated by the Langmuir isotherm was higher than that of 300 mg/L. Furthermore, adsorption by ASHMA was a relatively rapid process, and adsorption equilibrium could be achieved in 1 min. The adsorbents were characterized by FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the activating agent destroyed the crystal structure of the quartz sand under calcination, and formed Si-O-Na and Si-OH groups to realize activation. The experimental results revealed that the adsorption process involved the removal of Cu(II) by the formation of Si-O-Cu bonds on the surface of the adsorbent. The above results indicated that the adsorbent prepared from quartz sand had a good removal effect on Cu(II).
