The study is a historical-critical investigation of contemporary art in Molise. The idea of the research, despite the difficulties that derive from each operation of critical synthesis, is to want to provide a reading of the artistic events in Molise in the twentieth century, proposing an analysis divided by decades and themes, with insights on the most significant artistic figures looking for antithetical terms of comparison for each decade. If the primary objective is the reconstruction of a history of contemporary art, the secondary objective is the creation of a theoretical and study basis for the activation of specific cultural paths linked to territorial developments, tourism promotion, in-depth study. Through the various chapters, part of the history of local art has been reconstructed, through influences and relationships with the history of national art and international movements. In addition to recovering the memory of minor artistic figures, a new critical reading of the most significant artists on the local level has been set up. Molise is a land of contradictions as a place of absence or, as recently communicated, a territory of non-existence. In structuring a History of Art of the Twentieth Century, an objectively complex undertaking because the studies are still very unstable, i tried, chapter after chapter, to underline the contrasts through a game of oppositions. From dialectical comparisons between sometimes opposing terms, an attempt was made to bring out a multifaceted and complex story, to restore depth to the actions of artists often hidden in oblivion. More attention was paid to painting and sculpture, with some attention also to photography and graphics. Finally, particular space was given to exhibition experiences and to how these influenced the explanation of shared practices. Last but not least, the present bibliography, albeit not limited, was analyzed with a critical eye, careful to look for the voices and direct testimonies of the protagonists and the transversal ideas for reflection. Finally, it was important to consult various archive sources.

The thesis addresses the theme of the relationship between arts and architecture, recurring in cultural debates for many centuries but of particular importance in the first decades of the twentieth century: first, it frames it at a general level, through the analysis of three peculiar episodes, namely the fifth edition of the “Triennale di Milano” in 1933, dedicated to mural painting, the sixth “Convegno Volta” in 1936, conference devoted to the theme “Relationships of Architecture with the Figurative Arts”, and the promulgation of the “2% Law”, which provided for the allocation of at least the aforementioned percentage to artistic decorations in relation to the total expenditure planned for public buildings to be constructed. The analysis then dwells on a particular type of monumental building, that of the Palace of Justice: all the buildings constructed from the unification of Italy to the 1950s are briefly presented, focusing on the two cases that constitute the reference models, namely the Palace of Justice in Rome, designed at the end of the nineteenth century by Guglielmo Calderini, and the Palace of Justice in Milan, designed in the 1930s by Marcello Piacentini, which is one of the main protagonists of research. Subsequently, the same theme is investigated in depth in three specific cases, namely the Palaces of Justice built in Sicily during the defined period, in Messina, Catania and Palermo. The comparison of the three cases reveals the peculiarities, the common characteristics and the different declinations of the theme in relation to the context, the historical period, the functional requirements and the aesthetic and architectural changes occurred in a few years. The analysis returns, therefore, a detailed description of the architectural and artistic aspects of the three Palaces and reconstructs the figures of the architects who designed them – Marcello Piacentini, Francesco Fichera and Gaetano and Ernesto Rapisardi respectively – and of the numerous artists involved in the realization of the external and internal decorative apparatus of the buildings, tracing their biographical profiles and reconstructing their production. The study, however, is not limited to highlight the individual characteristics of the three cases but identifies the stylistic evolutions that took place at an architectural and artistic level in those years. Moreover, it traces the relationships and connections between the protagonists, identified not only by means of bibliographical surveys but also through numerous archival analyses and the perusal of specialized magazines, such as "Architettura e Arti Decorative", "Architettura", "Emporium" and many others, and some newspapers of the period. The several documents identified, in fact, constitute the backbone of the story, with the aim of returning the dynamics that took place and certain details otherwise neglected by the existing bibliographic sources.
Nuovo, Lorenzo.

The thesis, however, set up broader plans of research, both temporally and geographically: taking into account the relationship between Italian post-twentieth century Theatrology and its disciplinary tradition and, on the other side, with other Western experiences in the same field. The dissertation is divided into three parts: the first discusses the Italian Theatrology's “re-founding” process (in the Sixties and Seventies) and its following consolidation (between the Seventies and the Eighties), while the second one presents Italian post-twentieth century Theatrology's characters (in the 1990s and 2000s); in the third part, they are investigated through a specific point of view, taken to describe the disciplinary paradigm at this time: the “recomposition” project that seems to occur in Italian Theatre Studies since the mid-1980s, as putting in relationship some of important traditionally couples of opposing polarities (theory/history, theory/practice, etc.). Each part is developed both through reconstruction of the history of the discipline (including its relationship with other artistic, humanistic and socio-cultural events) and the analysis of the scholarly production of the time (theoretical approaches, historical practice, methodological debates, etc.). In each chapter, finally, those items are studied together with broader international theatrological trends, and the Italian disciplinary tradition. The research was developed through the investigation of the scholarly production of Theatre Studies, with a particular attention to the role of those working environments clustered around the major theatrological journals; it has also been supported by an intensive fieldwork program, which consisted of a series of meeting with some of the protagonists of the foundation and the developing of Italian new Theatrology.

It is the aim of the present work to study the published articles in the A Construção Moderna, the first Portuguese magazine, edited from the year 1900 to 1919, dedicated both to architecture and to building in general. In such an important period of time for the Portuguese history and culture, as the turning of the century was, this pioneer experience introduced the ideias, the concepts and the materials that sustained the architectural thought and production in the beginning of the modernism in Portugal. In the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, Portugal was an undeveloped country. With its fragile economy and an almost non-existent industry, no wonder that the urban development and the consequent architectural languages appeared rather late in this country. In a cultural atmosphere still very much influenced by the 19th romanticism, the characters of such trend, were mainly the educated people seduced by the positivist doctrine and by the realistic aesthetics. So the modernism question is introduced in Portugal through two different ways of both artistic and cultural influences: on the one hand the French context, through the Academy (where the national architects took their training), the racionalism, the beaux-arts references and the cosmopolitan «Haussmann city»; on the other hand, the 19th English scenery, through the Arts and Crafts, the gothic revival and the cultural tradicionalism. These educated men of the last decade of the 19th century got their inspiration in these two sources. They were engaged in the rebirth of the values of the national identity and in defending the traditional culture, the picturesque and the folklore, trying to define a national example of architecture. The magazine A Construção Moderna appeared under these circumstances through the will and effort of these three men: Nunes Colares, typographer and the project guide; Melo de Matos, engineer and skilful mathematician; and Rosendo Carvalheira, architect with a certain romantic spirit and extremely dedicated to the national cause.Throughout their careers, they fixed the great topics of the architectural culture of this period: the social and cultural importance of the architects; the art critics; the ‘Portuguese house’ model; the restore politics; the urban development; the ‘cheap houses’; the Portuguese ‘style’; and the introduction of the new technologies and new building materials in the civil construction, among many other problematics

This study has analyzed the presence of Italian sculptors in Paris from the beginning of the 20th Century to the end of the third decade, with the aim of reconstructing an important chapter of the history of artistic exchanges between Italy and France. We have favored an historical-philological method, based on critical publications and old French and Italian press. Concerning the beginning of the century, we have remarked a considerable participation of Italians in the main expositions in the French capital, such as official Salons; critical and market success allowed them to get a main role in the crew of the most popular artists. During the twenties, we have noted a less considerable participation of Italian sculptors; we have interpreted it in relation to historical context of fascist Italy, where the government was trying to develop a national cultural program. The Italian artists in France, after the First World War, didn't share the new Italian artistic orientation; they went on with outdated aesthetic choices. The last part of our research was interested in the development of the new Italian artistic language, finally known out of Italy. The Italian sculptors consequently could take part in arts activity in Paris, showing the face of a new sculpture, finally aware of its potentialities. France gave these experimentations a good welcome in the aim of constituting a longtime friendship with the Italian country.

One of the main purposes of this thesis is to challenge the aesthetic pluralism characterising the situation of figurative arts during the Italian fascist regime (1922-1943) as a warranty of art autonomy. Rather than reducing the artworks and the artists to simple cogs of the propaganda machine, this study wishes to demonstrate that painting in particular, shapes and even anticipates the fascist ideology. The concept of "italianity" and its variants such as "latinity", "romanity" etc. Has emerged as operative notions because of their recurrence in political and artistic textual sources. Those essentialisms carefully observed in the light of post-colonial studies, allow to rebuild the "horizon of expectations" of chosen representations. Therefore, from the human figures of Novecento described by Margherita Sarfatti as the emblem of a neo-classicism of Roman tradition, to the synthetic dimension typical of the aerial futurist landscapes celebrating an Italy ready for war, or even the naked figures of the School of Rome exalting italic archetypes, "italianity" is systematically used to legitimate a "civilization" regenerated by fascism, authoritarian, anticosmopolitan and antidemocratic. This research attempts to study "italianity" as the ideological foundation of a radicalization and to observe how art contributes over time to legitimate the supremacy of Italian "race" in both spiritual and biological terms

This study is intended to present the Camperio Family Photographic Collection and to highlight the specific relevance of the travel photography it contains as a key both to the interpretation of the whole Collection and to the ethics of vision of the members of this 19-20th century upper middle class French-Italian family. To the members of this family, travel and travel photography had been primary tools both to frame the world and to relate themselves to their own time. The photographic eye, focusing on natural resources as well as on natural, technological and artistic wonders and on wartime, unveils the ethics of vision of the collectors, and paradigmately reflects the cultural climate of their age. The ideological transmission from parents to sons that emerges from the analysis of both photographic and related archival materials is also a fil rouge that goes through the collection, and gives it a coherence seldom met in other family funds. The Camperio Photographic Collection is housed in the Biblioteca Civica di Villasanta (Villasanta (MI), Italy). It has been catalogued by the author for the Cultural Heritage Information System of Cultural Department of Lombardy, and can be found online (Beta version): http://www.lombardiabeniculturali.it/percorsi/camperio/1/ _________________________ The Camperio Family Photographic Collection (Fondo Fotografico Camperio) is part of the Camperio Family Fund (Fondo Camperio), a 19-20th century family fund housed in the Biblioteca Civica di Villasanta (Villasanta Civic Library) that holds together the Family Archive, the Family Library, and the Photographic Collection itself. The Photographic Collection was gathered over one century by the members of the family who took, bought and ordered photographs to document their enterprises. The collection contains pictures made by renowned photographers, scholars, explorers and by the Camperios themselves. It hosts several photographic genres, but it is expecially devoted to travel photography as the greatest part of the pictures was made or acquired during the many journeys undertaken by the family members in Africa, Egypt, Far East, Australia, Russia. This relevant historical photographic collection came to us in exceptionally good conditions, as it is integrated in the undivided, original archival context which is in almost intact state and provides useful material to determine the collection’s stratigraphy. The family Archive holds a wide range of documents (travel diaries, letters, essays…) that give account of the interests and activities in which the Camperios were involved, among which travel held a front-rank position. Also, it often provides straightforward reference to picture taking and collecting. The family Library is mainly composed by geographical and military literature, thus reflecting the great interest of the family members in geographical exploration and travel, and giving further evidence (in the many illustrated magazines and books) to the importance of photographic image as a tool to classificate, reduce and take possession of the world. During the second half of the 19th century and until World war 2, travelling had been a fundamental activity for to the members of this family. They interpreted journey in all its nuances, from exploration to tourism to war campaigning, and travelled extensively all around the world with a sense of essential necessity and an effortless attitude, in times when such an activity was no ordinary matter. The relevance of travel as an experience by means of which the Camperios related themselves to the world and to their own time is highlighted not only by the prominence that this activity had in the education of all the family members, but also in the importance that it had in the pursuing of their goals and in the developement of their professional careers. Italian Unification patriots, explorers, colonial entrepreneurs, philanthropists, professional soldiers, amateur photographers, the Camperios, both men and women, were extremely active personalities permeated with positivist tought and committed to international promotion, modernization and progress of Italy. Following their father’s steps, the young Camperios travelled extensively, collected slices of world through photography, and pursued the accomplishment of projects in line with their parent’s ideals. Taken as a whole, the Camperio Fund goes beyond the boundaries of the local or strictly personal experience, providing visions of the social, economical and political international history of the times. It also shows how ideological transmission from generation to generation worked as a leitmotiv declined in various ways in the personal choiches and cultural orientation of the members of the family. This ideolgical continuum is mirrored in the Photographic Collection and represents its strongest unifying element, its coherence being not merely provided by the thematic element (the travel) or by the collectors family membership.

In particular, I examined Trojan Women by Euripides, a tragedy that today is often present on the stage. The thesis presents an account on the most important present-day shows and writings from Italy and other countries about loneliness, violence and exile due to fights between different cultures. On purpose, I studied not generally known shows and plays. The study method has been adapted to every show features and to its evidences. Finally, I valued how and if a show succeeded and made a comparison among different translations of Euripides' trojan women.
