Анотація:
Дисертація на здобуття наукового ступеня доктора технічних наук за спеціальністю 05.17.11 – технологія тугоплавких неметалічних матеріалів, Державний вищий навчальний заклад "Український державний хіміко-технологічний університет", Національний технічний університет "Харківський політехнічний інститут", Харків, 2020. Дисертацію присвячено розвитку наукових основ технології екологічно безпечних захисно-декоративних склоемалевих покриттів широкої колірної гами по сталі і кольоровим металам, а також принципів регулювання та прогнозування їх колірних характеристик. Внаслідок проведення дослідження за темою дисертаційної роботи одержані такі наукові результати: - науково обгрунтовано та експериментально доведено, що отримання на кольорових металах емалевих покриттів, які не вміщують Плюмбум, можливе на основі стекол системи Na₂O–BaO–B₂O₃–SiO₂; за комплексом визначених властивостей та здатності утворювати найбільш якісні покриття на мідній основі виділена область базової системи, мол.%: Na₂O – 24,2–40,5; ВаО – 5,0–10,0; B₂O₃ – 15,2–30,5; SiO₂ – 24,0–53,5, яка у зрівнянні з межами цих компонентів в відомих складах безплюмбатних емалей характеризується збільшеним в 2 рази вмістом B₂O₃ і відносно невеликим вмістом SiO₂; - встановлені основні тенденції зміни колірного тону стекол системи Na₂O–BaO–B₂O₃–SiO₂, які суттєво відрізняються за хімічним складом та забарвлені іонними барвниками, з огляду на розташування максимумів ІЧ-спектрів стекол та їх кислотно-основні властивості; останні оцінювались двома розрахунковими структурними параметрами: fSi – ступінь зв’язності кремнекисневого каркасу і Ψв – орієнтовний показник координаційного стану Бору в структурі скла. Доведено, що між колірним тоном λ та Ψв існує значний кореляційний зв'язок для стекол, забарвлених CuO r*=−0,83 і CoO r*=−0,87 та слабкий – для стекол, забарвлених K₂Cr₂O₇ – r*=0,5; - виявлені закономірності забарвлення одної скломатриці і емалевого покриття на її основі в системі R₂O–ВаО–ZnO–Al₂O₃–В₂О₃–TiO₂–SiO₂ рядом іонними барвників. Незалежно від вмісту барвників, вони надають однаковий колірний тон як стеклам, так і покриттям на основі цих стекол, а саме: CuO (1,0–3,0 мас.%) λ=489–494 нм (синьо-зелений), Fe₂O₃ (0,5–2 мас.%) λ=575–585 нм (жовтий), K₂Cr₂O₇ (0,5–2,0 мас.%) λ=570–576 нм (жовто-зелений), CoO (0,5–1,0 мас.%) λ=441–463 нм (синьо-фіолетовий), NiO (0,5–1,0 мас.%) λскла=559′–571′ нм, λпокриттів=598–629 нм (коричневий). Доказано, що за ступенем інтенсивності забарвлення стекол та покриттів на їх основі барвники розташовуються в наступній послідовності: CoO > NiO > CuO > K₂Cr₂O₇ > Fe₂O₃; - вперше встановлений механізм глушіння прозорого матричного емалевого скла в системі R₂O–ВаО–ZnO–TiO₂–Al₂O₃–В₂О₃–TiO₂–SiO₂ при введені МоО3, в результаті якого виникає явище опалесценції, а саме: за рахунок дифракції при розповсюдженні хвиль в мікронеоднорідному середовищі, в якому розмір часток молібден(VI) оксиду (0,05–0,15 мкм) менше довжини хвиль білого світла; - вперше встановлена залежність коефіцієнта дифузного відбиття емалевих покриттів від хімічного складу емалевих фрит, яка отримана обробкою експериментальної вибірки 471 складу покривних емалевих фрит методом множинного кореляційного аналізу і представлена у вигляді математичної моделі, що дозволяє розрахувати хімічний склад покривних емалей із заданим КДВ; коефіцієнт кореляції між експериментальними і розрахунковими значеннями – 0,98; - використовуючи ідею про введенні в будь-який матеріал (скло, пігмент, ситал, метал) певних компонентів в незначній кількості для модифікації його властивостей, вперше виявлено наступне: «малий додаток» Fe₂O₃ у кількості 0,25 мас.% в складі безплюмбатних емалевих стекол на основі базової системи Na₂O–BaO–B₂O₃–SiO₂ і 1 мас.% в складі безфлуористих склоемалей на основі базової системи Na₂O–B₂O₃–SiO₂ активізує процеси лікваційного розшарування скла, що дозволяє збільшити в 1,5–2,5 рази інтенсивність глушіння покриттів, а також покращити оптико-колірні характеристики пігментнозабарвлених склопокриттів, зокрема, червоного кольору. «Малий додаток» ZrO₂ у кількості до 1 мас.% в складі малофлуористої титанової емалі сприяє активному виділенню анатазу в покритті під час випалу та покращенню його оптичних характеристик; - за допомогою розробленої спеціальної комп’ютерної програми COLOUR GLASS, яка автоматично розраховує координати кольорності x y, колірний тон λ, чистоту кольору Р та наносить колірні характеристики матеріалів на графік МКО, вперше доказано, що за картиною розташування точок кольору, по-перше, можна робити прогнози відносно рівноваги, яка утворюється між іонними забарвлюючими комплексами під час варки скла, по-друге, про колористичні можливості суміши пігментів - вперше в області технологій, які потребують підвищених температур, встановлені залежності координат кольору емалевих покриттів від складу суміші пігментів у вигляді поліноміальних математичних моделей, що дозволило вирішити складну матеріалознавчу колористичну проблему знаходження співвідношення пігментів для відтворення кольору зразка із заданими колірними характеристиками. Практичне значення отриманих результатів: - розроблено склади емалевих стекол для кольорових металів, які не містять Плюмбуму – одного із самих шкідливих для навколишнього середовища елемента, запропоновано основи технології одержання виробів з їх використанням. Нові емалі широкої палітри кольорів, різного ступеню прозорості створено на основі матричної прозорої емалі. Вони характеризуються однаковим інтервалом випалу 780–820 °С, у зв’язку з чим спрощується технологія отримання художніх і ювелірних виробів. Емалі пройшли випробування та рекомендовані до впровадження у виробництво з виготовлення художніх виробів в майстерні, що знаходиться в структурі Музею українського живопису (м. Дніпро), а також на підприємстві з виготовлення ювелірних виробів, компанія "Diadema", м. Вінниця. Палітра емалевих покриттів та вироби з них представлені під час доповіді на 24 Міжнародному Конгресі емальєрів в м. Чикаго у 2018 р. Згідно міжнародного договору між ДВНЗ УДХТУ та компанією "Richemont International SA Varinor SA" м. Делемонт, Щвейцарія, виготовлено і передано замовнику емалеві стекла у вигляді порошку і емальовані мідні зразки; - створено каталог зразків кольорів, в якому представлено склооснови, кількість барвників, глушників, відновників та оптико-колірні характеристики емалевих покриттів, що не містять Плюмбум. Назву кольорів встановлювали у відповідності із назвою кольорів системи RAL. Палітра розроблених емалей ювелірного та художнього призначення включає 54 кольори: жовто-червоні, синьо-зелені, оливково-гірчичні, пастельні та коричнево-чорні; - розроблено склади малофлуористих білих і світлозабарвлених титанових емалей, безфлуористої склооснови для отримання яскравозабарвлених емалевих покриттів пігментним способом, які випробувані в виробничих умовах ТОВ «Новомосковський посуд» і рекомендовані до серійного впровадження на заводах з випуску емальованих виробів господарчо-побутового призначення. Технологічні особливості виробництва запропонованих емалей дозволяють здійснювати високотемпературні операції варки емалей на 100 °С, а випалу покриттів – на 30–50 °С нижче відомих, що в епоху тотальної економії топливно-енергетичних ресурсів дуже актуально. Малофлуористі світлозабарвлені кремова і сіро-блакитна емалі впроваджені на ТОВ "Новомосковський посуд"; - вперше для технології емалевих покриттів на сталі розроблено метод колірного моделювання, завдяки якому побудовано колірний трикутник-номограму для виробничої склооснови і пігментів жовтого, червоного, синього, за допомогою якого задається необхідний колір і розраховується необхідне співвідношення пігментів. Метод колірного моделювання є універсальним і може бути застосованим до широкого асортименту силікатних матеріалів: глазуровані покриття на керамічній основі, кольорові будівельні матеріали та інші. У вступі обґрунтовано актуальність теми дисертації, сформульовано головну мету та завдання роботи, представлено наукову новизну та практичну цінність одержаних результатів. В першому розділі наведено аналіз патентної та науково-технічної літератури, що стосується отримання екологічно безпечних емалей широкої колірної гами, сучасного стану виробництва кольорових емалей та контролю їх колірних показників, механізмів забарвлення скла та емалей і факторів, що впливають на формування кольору. У другому розділі надано основні поняття та визначення, які використовуються в роботі, а також методики дослідження фізико-хімічних властивостей і структури стекол, покриттів та їх колірні характеристики. В третьому розділі представлено дослідження з розробки екологічно безпечних емалей для міді та прогнозування їх колірних характеристик. В четвертому розділі представлено результати досліджень з розробки легкоплавкої титанової емалі, яка відповідала б вимогам діючих стандартів та випалювалась в ресурсо- та енергозберігаючих умовах виробництва та була максимально екологічно безпечною для навколишнього середовища. П'ятий розділ присвячений дослідженням з розробки складів емалевих фрит, що не вміщують Флуор, які використовуються для отримання яскравозабарвлених емалевих покриттів для виробів господарчо-побутового призначення. В шостому розділі представлені результати розробки методу колірного моделювання. Відтворити, а тим більше спрогнозувати колір із заданими колірними характеристиками – надзвичайно складна багатопланова матеріалознавча проблема, навіть якщо відома рецептура скла і покриття, режими їх варки та випалу. В сьомому розділі надано результати промислової апробації, реалізації та впровадження отриманих матеріалів.
Thesis for a Doctor of Science Degree in Specialty 05.17.11 – Refractory Non-Metallic Materials Technology, State Higher Educational Institution "Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology", National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute", Kharkiv, 2019. The dissertation is devoted to creation of physicochemical bases of technology of ecologically safe protective and decorative glass-enamel coatings of wide color scale on steel and non-ferrous metals, development of principles of regulation and prediction of their color. As a result of the research on the topic of dissertation the following scientific results were obtained: - scientifically substantiated and experimentally proved that the production of lead-free enamel coatings on non-ferrous metals is possible on the basis of the Na₂O – BaO – B₂O₃ – SiO₂ glasses, by the complex of defined properties and the ability to form the highest quality coatings on a copper basis the selected region of the base system, mol %: Na₂O – 24,2–40,5; BaO – 5.0–10.0; B₂O₃ – 15.2–30.5; SiO₂ – 24,0–53,5, which in comparison with the limits of these components in known compositions of lead-free enamels, is characterized by a 2-fold increase in the content of B2O3 and a relatively small content of SiO₂; - the basic tendencies of color change of glasses of Na₂O–BaO–B₂O₃–SiO₂ system has been established, which differ significantly in chemical composition and has colored by ionic dyes, taking into account the structural features of glasses and their acid-basic properties. They has been evaluated by two calculated structural parameters: fSi is the degree of connectivity of the silica framework and Ψв is an indicative index of the coordination state of Boron in the structure of the glass. It had proved that there is a significant correlation between the colors λ and Ψv had proved for glasses colored CuO r * = - 0,83 and CoO r * = - 0,87 and weak – for glasses colored K₂Cr₂O₇, -r * = 0,5; - the patterns of coloring of one glass matrix and enamel coatings on its basis in the system R₂O–BaO–ZnO–Al₂O₃–B₂O₃–TiO₂–SiO₂ by a series of ionic dyes has been founded. Regardless of the content of the dyes, they give the same color tone to the glass and coatings based on these glasses, namely: CuO (1.0–3.0 wt%) λ = 489–494 nm (blue-green), Fe₂O₃ (0.5–2 wt%) λ = 575–585 nm (yellow), K₂Cr₂O₇ (0,5–2.0 wt%) λ = 570–576 nm (yellow-green), CoO (0.5–1.0 wt%) λ = 441–463 nm (blue-violet), NiO (0, 5-1.0 wt.%) λ glass = 559′ – 571 nm, λ coatings = 598–629 nm (brown). It has been proved that in the degree of color intensity of glasses and coatings based on them, the dyes has been arranged in the following sequence: CoO> NiO> CuO> K₂Cr₂O₇ > Fe₂O₃; - for the first time, the mechanism of silencing of transparent matrix enamel glass in R₂O–BaO–ZnO–TiO₂–Al₂O₃–B₂O₃–TiO₂–SiO₂ system with the introduction of MoO₃ has been established, which results in the phenomenon of opalescence, namely: due to diffraction at propagation of waves in micro inhomogeneous medium in which the particle size of molybdenum (VI) oxide is 0.05-0.15 μm less than the wavelength of white light; - for the first time, the dependence of the diffuse reflection coefficient (CDR) of enamel coatings on the chemical composition of enamel frits, obtained by processing the experimental sample 471 of the enamel frit composition by multiple correlation analysis, which is presented in the form of a mathematical model that allows you to calculate the chemical composition of the enamel coatings with a given CDR; the correlation coefficient between experimental and calculated values is 0.98; - using the idea of introducing into any material (glass, pigment, sitall, metal) certain components in a small amount to modify its properties, the following has been first discovered: "small addition" of Fe₂O₃ in the amount of 0.25 wt.% in the composition of lead-free enamel glasses based on the base system Na₂O–BaO–B₂O₃–SiO₂ and 1 wt.% in the composition of fluorless glass enamels based on the basic system Na₂O–B₂O₃–SiO₂ activates the processes of differentiation of the segregation-dropping structure of glass, which allows to increase the intensity of opaque coatings by 1.5–2.5 times, as well as to improve the optical-color characteristics of pigment-colored glass coatings, in particular, red. "Small addition" of ZrO₂ in the amount up to 1 wt.% in the composition of low-fluoride titanium enamel promotes the active release of anatase in the coating during firing and improving its optical characteristics; -with the help of a dedicated COLOR GLASS computer program that automatically calculates color coordinates x y, color tone λ, color purity P, and maps the color characteristics of materials to the СIE graph, it has been first demonstrated that the picture of the location of the color points, first, you can make predictions about the equilibrium that is formed between the ionic coloring complexes during the melting of glass, and secondly, about the color potential of the pigment mixture. - for the first time in the field of technologies requiring high temperatures, the dependences of the color coordinates of the enamel coatings on the composition of the pigment mixture in the form of polynomial mathematical models has been established, which made it possible to solve the complex material-coloristic problem of finding the ratio of pigments to reproduce the color of the sample with the specified color characteristics. The practical significance of the obtained results: - the compositions of enamel glasses for non-ferrous metals, which do not contain Plumbum - one of the most harmful for the environment element, had been developed; the basics of technology of obtaining products with their use had offered. New enamels of a wide range of colors with varying degrees of transparency had been created on the basis of matrix transparent enamel and they had characterized by the same firing interval of 780-820 °C, which makes the technology of obtaining artistic and jewelry easier. Enamels had been tested and recommended for implementation in the production of artistic products in the workshop, which locates in the structure of the Museum of Ukrainian Painting (Dnipro), as well as at the jewelry company, Diadema, Vinnytsia. The enamel coatings palette and their products had presented during a report at the 24th International Congress of Enamels in Chicago in 2018. According to an international agreement between the Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology (Dnipro) and Richemont International SA Varinor SA, Delmont, Switzerland, enamel glass powder and enameled copper samples had been made and handed over to the customer; - a catalog of color samples, which presents the glass base, the number of dyes, opacifiers, reducing agents and the optic-color characteristics of enamel coatings which do not contain Plumbum, has been created. The color name was set in accordance with the color name of the RAL system. The palette of designed enamels of jewelry and artistic purpose includes transparent matrix enamel and 53 colors: yellow-red, blue-green, olive-mustard, pastel and brown-black; - a series of compositions of white and light-colored titanium enamels containing reduced amount of Fluorine, has been developed, also the composition of fluorless frites to obtain brightly colored enamel coatings pigmented way of color, which were fused and passed extensive testing in production conditions factories for the production of enameled household products, has been synthesized. Technological features of production of the enamels offered permits to carry out high-temperature operations of melting at 100oC below the known ones, and firing of coatings – by 30-50 °C, which is very relevant in the era of total saving of fuel and energy resources. Low-fluoride light-colored cream and gray-blue enamels has been introduced at "Novomoskovsk dishes"; - for the first time for the technology of enamel coatings on steel, a method of color modeling has been developed, through which a color triangle-nomogram has been constructed for the production glass base and pigments of yellow, red, blue, by which the required color is specified and the necessary ratio of pigments is calculated. The color modeling method is versatile and can be applied to a wide range of silicate materials: glazed ceramic coatings, colored building materials, and more. The introduction substantiates the relevance of the dissertation topic, formulates the main purpose and objectives of the work, presents the scientific novelty and practical value of the obtained results. The first section provides an analysis of the patent and scientific and technical literature concerning the production of environmentally safe enamels of a wide color range, the current state of production of colored enamels and the control of their color indices, the mechanisms of color of glass and enamels and factors affecting color formation. The second section provides the basic concepts and definitions used in the work, as well as methods for investigating the physicochemical properties and structure of glasses and coatings and their color characteristics. The third section presents studies on the development of environmentally safe enamels for copper and the prediction of their color characteristics. The fourth section presents the results of research on the development of fusible titanium enamel which would meet the requirements of current standards and be burned in resource- and energy-efficient production conditions and be the most environmentally safe for the environment. The fifth section is devoted to the research on the development of enamel frits that do not contain Fluorine and used to produce brightly colored enamel coatings for household products. The sixth section presents the results of the development the color modeling method. Reproduce, and even more so predict, color with predetermined color characteristics is an extremely complex multifaceted material science problem, even if glass and coating formulations, modes of melting and firing are known. In the seventh section the results of industrial testing, realization and implementation of the received materials has been presented.

Розроблена спеціальна комп’ютерна програма COLOUR GLASS, яка за визначеними координатами кольору XYZ автоматично розташовує точки кольору на графіку МКО. Отримані емалі ювелірного та художнього призначення на основі стекол системи Na₂O–BaO–B₂O₃–SiO₂. Розроблені малофлуористі білі і світлозабарвлені титанові емалі, безфлуориста основа для пігментного способу забарвлення. Створено метод колірного моделювання, за допомогою якого можна розрахувати співвідношення пігментів для відтворення кольору зразка за заданими колірними характеристиками.

In the seventh section the results of industrial testing, implementation and implementation of the received materials has presented. Fe₂O₃ in the composition of fluor-free enamel glasses on the basis of the Na₂O – B₂O₃ – SiO₂ base system activates the processes of glass removal stratification, which allows to increase 1.5-2.5 times the intensity of coating damping; - with the help of a special computer program COLOR GLASS, which automatically calculates the coordinates of the color x, y, the color tone λ, the purity of the color P and applies the color characteristics of the materials to the CIE graph, it has been proved for the first time that the chart of the location of color points can make forecasts about the equilibrium, which formed between ionic coloring complexes during glass melting; - for the first time in the field of technologies requiring high temperatures, the dependences of the color coordinates of enamel coatings on the composition of the pigment mixture in the form of polynomial mathematical models has been established, which allowed to solve the complex material-coloristic problem of finding the ratio of pigments to reproduce the color of the sample with the specified color characteristics. The practical significance of the obtained results: - the compositions of enamel art and jewelry glasses for non-ferrous metals, which do not contain Plumbum, has been developed. They are characterized by the same firing interval of 780-820 °C. A catalog of color samples has created. The palette includes fondon and 53 colors: yellow-red, blue-green, olive-mustard, pastel and brown-black; - a series of compositions of white and light-colored titanium enamels containing reduced amount of Fluorine (up to 2.5 wt.%), has been developed, also the composition of fluorless frites to obtain brightly colored enamel coatings pigmented way of color. Temperature operations of the enamel melting is 100 °C and firing of coatings is 30-50oC below the known ones.

This thesis assesses the work of four art writers who were active in Britain between the wars, Laurence Binyon, Paul Nash, Herbert Read and Geoffrey Grigson. In a period that has generally been viewed as dominated by a formalist criticism, their art writing exhibited a persistent romanticism that was fundamental to their engagement with modernism and was also integral to their interpretation of the role of the artist in the modem world. The main contention of this thesis is that this sensibility, far from being regressive, was a vital "- factor in their understanding and active promotion of modernist movements such as abstraction and surrealism. The main period under consideration is the inter-war years, leading up to the year 1936 as a significant moment, with the International Surrealist Exhibition in London and the publication in Axis of Geoffrey Grigson and John Piper's important article 'England's Climate'. Chapter One focuses on Laurence Binyon, a key figure bridging late nineteenth-century romanticism and the new romanticism of the mid twentieth century who, in his writing on Asian art and in his studies of eighteenth and nineteenth-century English artists, found relevant exemplars for modem artists. Chapter Two examines the art writings of Paul Nash, whose explorations into abstraction and surrealism in the 1920s and 1930s were driven by a need to find an appropriate vehicle for his own artistic expression. A study of Herbert Read's art writing between the wars in Chapter Three demonstrates the extent to which his romantic sensibility and a desire for cultural continuity with the past informed his interpretation of modem movements, most notably surrealism. The fourth chapter reassesses the role of Geoffrey Grigson, a controversial but, I would maintain, crucial figure in the 1930s, and demonstrates the importance of his contribution to the promulgation of modernism in Britain.

The study aims to analyse the culture of the visual arts in Wales between 1940 and 1994 – a period when the British state took formal responsibility for arts patronage through the Arts Council of Great Britain. Special attention focuses on how exhibitions organised by Welsh representatives of the Arts Council helped define and assert a Welsh sense of national identity, whose interests this served, and what were its wider implications. Following Peter Lord’s idea of an “Aesthetics of Relevance,” the study therefore examines Welsh art in relation to the broader social, political and economic development of the Welsh nation. Using discourse analysis of exhibition files held in the Welsh Arts Council Archive, together with other primary and secondary sources, the study finds that the Welsh Arts Council promoted a British sense of Welshness – conceived first in communal, later in more progressive terms – that served to legitimise and reproduce the British social democratic consensus negotiated between government, capital and labour during the Second World War. At the same time, it marginalised nationalist ideas of Wales. This was achieved not only through the kinds of images shown by the Welsh Arts Council, but also how they were presented to Welsh audiences. In conceptual terms, the Welsh Arts Council can therefore be thought of as a “disciplinary mechanism” which made use of curatorial practices of display to regulate images into discursive formations that permitted, and so naturalised, certain ways of thinking about national identity, while silencing others. In turn, this codification of national culture helped define the social-space of the Welsh nation. On the other hand, audiences often challenged the authorised version of Welsh art through the different knowledges and experiences they brought to a display site. Art is therefore a key discursive space in which consensus on national identity is negotiated and contested.

Among the treasures of the Montana Museum of Art and Culture is a lovely and elaborate work of art entitled Wars of the Romani, a Flemish tapestry woven in the last third of the 16th century. It is a large weaving, 10 x 15, portraying two armies intertwined in merciless combat. The specific subject matter of Wars of the Romani is unknown, but a standard displaying the Roman eagle held aloft in the background indicates the presence of the Roman legions. The tapestry displays rushing horsemen mounted on vigorous horses, marching spearmen, and supine warriors, imagery common to Flemish battle tapestries from the last quarter of the sixteenth century. Framing the battle scene is a grotesque style border composed of gods placed within whimsical filigree architectural pavilions interwoven with fanciful decoration and mythical beasts. Wars of the Romanis Mannerist battle scene offers a view into the pictorial trends of the late Renaissance and displays the energy of the tumultuous era in which it was woven.

This thesis is structured in six chapters. Chapter I contains an introduction and includes purpose, theory, method, and concepts. The main purpose, as depicted by the title, is to examine the roots of Swedish ideology concerning what today is generally named design, as embodied in the concept of more beautiful or better things for everyday life (in Swedish: ”vackrare vardagsvara”).

Chapter II contains a background and includes philosophical ideas and aesthetic movements in Europe which have influenced the Swedish Society of Arts and Crafts (in Swedish ”Svenska Slöjdföreningen”, abbreviated SSF) which was later renamed the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design (in Swedish: ”Föreningen Svensk Form”). It considers these activities: the Arts and Crafts movement in England, the Swedish national romantic movement, Deutscher Werkbund in Germany, and Swedish moulders of public opinion and new ideas, like Ellen Key, Carl Larsson and Gregor Paulsson.

Chapter III is an ideological biography of Gregor Paulsson. The chapter deals with biographical data and ideological development, and the social aesthetical texts which were important in his activity in the National Museum and as director of The Swedish Society of Arts and Crafts. Gregor Paulsson is considered mainly in his role as social aesthetical propagandist and museologist.

Chapter IV concerns the early history and activities of the Swedish Society of Arts and Crafts seen as an introduction to the Baltic Exhibition 1914, and the subsequent schism which eventually led to its reorganization and a new ideological orientation. Its activities were directed towards increased cooperation between artists and industry, and a special department was established as an employment office for companies and designers under the management of the textile artist Elsa Gullberg. This chapter also includes a brief portrait of key persons in the Society.

Chapter V is a study in several sections of the articles for everyday use seen in industrial practice, with Gustavsberg’s china factory and Orrefors’ glassworks as two separate historical studies. The 1917 Home Exhibition is surveyed as an example of the educational ambitions in the development of people’s taste. The focus of the chapter, however, is the international industrial art exhibition in Paris 1925, Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, and the debate about it in the Swedish and French press.

Chapter VI consists of a concluding discussion with a final epilogue. It contains suggested questions for future research including relations between design and ethics.

Charting forty years of taste, patronage and collecting in the history of 20th century British art, this dissertation documents the formative yearsof Sir John Rothstein. John, son of William Rothenstein, became director of the Tate Gallery in 1938 after two productive and hitherto unstudies periods as deirector of the art galleries of both Leeds and Sheffield. This was the era when an aesthetic and critical orthodoxy rose to prominence, which led in many instances to the quasi-abandonment of figurative art in favour of an authoritarian avant-garde ideology. A complimentary effect of this shift from representational to abstract was a kind of aesthetic, Anglophobia, resulting in the disparagement of British art in favour of a seemingly unchallengeable preference for European and eventually American art. Its key exponents were Clive Bell, Roger Fry and Herbert Read. From initial Edwardian conservatism, advanced British art determinedly followed the continent from one 'innovative' movement to another, culminating in the conceptually obsessed art establishment of Britain today. But there were those who thought and painted differently. This dissertation offers an alternative to the conventional history, structured as it is around the life of John Rothenstein. He did not ally himself to any particular school of thought and proved himself an erudite champion of artists as diverse as Henry Moore and Charles Mahoney. By concentrating on the early years of his career and building up a picture of the artistic scene in which he moved, the aim of this dissertation is to document and analyse his crucial role in promoting and defending British Art and the longer-term consequences of his activities and extensive writings.

This study examines the art practices and management of the National Art Galleries of Australia and New Zealand in the period between the wars, 1918-1939.It does so in part to account for the pervading conservatism and narrow corridors of aesthetic acceptability evident in their acquisitions and in many of their dealings. It aims to explore the role of Britishness, through an examination of the influence of the London Royal Academy of Art, within theses emerging official art institutions. This study argues that the dominant artistic ideology illustrated in these National Gallery collections was determined by a social elite, which was, at its heart, British. Its collective taste was predicated on models established in Great Britain and on traditions and on connoisseurship. This visual instruction in the British ideal of culture, as seen through the Academy, was regarded as a worthy aspiration, one that was at once both highly nationalistic and also a tool of Empire unity. This ideal was nationalistic in the sense that it marked the desire of these Boards to claim for the nation membership of the world's civil society, whilst also acknowleging that the vehicle to do so was through an enhanced alliance with British art and culture. The ramifications of an Empire-first aesthetic model were tremendous. The model severely constrained taste in domestic art, limited the participation of indigenous peoples and shaped the reception of modernism.

From the start the goal with this project has been to make a sounding interpretation of the act of wavesurfing from the perspective of a surfer and an exploration of the possibility to create soundprints that with music captures and recreates physical movements, experiences and moments of flow.

To do this I have collected physical data from a surfer surfing the waves at Torö Stenstrand (the most "famous" surfbreak in the Stockholm region) that I later connected to chosen musical parameters such as rhythm, pitch, tempo and texture. Because the goal was to capture the experience of surfing waves I also recorded sounds of the waves and the surroundings and mixed it together with the written out music.

In the years between 1960 and 1975 in NSW there emerged a loosely connected network of women interested in modern or creative embroidery. The Embroiderers' Guild of NSW served as a focus for many of these women, providing opportunities for them to exhibit their work, and to engage in embroidery education as teachers or as learners. Others worked independently, exhibited in commercial galleries and endeavoured to establish reputations as professional artists. Some of these women were trained artists and wanted embroidery to be seen as 'art'; others were enthusiastic amateurs, engaged in embroidery as a form of 'serious leisure'. They played a significant role in the development of creative embroidery and textile art in NSW and yet, for the most part, their story is absent from the narratives of Australian art and craft history. These women were involved in a network of interactions which displayed many of the characteristics of more organised art worlds, as posite d by sociologist Howard Becker. They produced work according to shared conventions, they established co-operative links with each other and with other organisations, they organised educational opportunities to encourage others to take up creative embroidery and they mounted exhibitions to facilitate engagement with a public audience. Although their absence from the literature suggests that they operated in isolation, my research indicates that there were many points of contact between the embroidery world, the broader craft world and the fine art community in NSW. This thesis examines the context in which creative embroiderers worked, discusses the careers of key individuals working at this time, explores the interactions between them, and evaluates the influence that they had on later practice in embroidery and textiles in NSW.

Until recently sentencing was not considered to be a separate subject within the discipline of law. It was thought to be a matter essentially for judges. Sentencing was not taught as such. Rather, on ascending to the bench lawyers took with them their experience of the law in practice and their knowledge of their powers as limited by statute. Thereafter there was little in the way of guidance. In the last quarter century sentencing has developed in a number of ways. Parliament has passed an increasing number of laws creating and limiting new powers. Academic commentators have analysed judgements and they have sought to establish a scheme of things to do with sentencing. Judges themselves have tended increasingly to explain their decisions and to develop an order of priorities. This work is a study of the sentencing policy laid down in judicial decisions in cases of contraventions of The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. By studying the sentencing decisions in reported cases of drugs offences, a legal model of the drugs trade is established. Such a model in broad terms follows the nature and terms of the offences contained in the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. But it is clear that there are certain aspects that cut across the conventional order of offences. In particular, the sentencing of drug addicts has posed difficult questions for the courts to consider. It is uncertain as to whether lawyers have grasped fully the implications of drug abuse on the scale practised by most addicts. This particular study has been completed in the context of the present literature relating to sentencing offenders. The law is predominantly that of England and Wales because that is the jurisdiction with the greatest number of reported cases. Consideration is given to both Northern Ireland and Scotland. The Law is stated as at 31st December 1986.

This thesis presents the research undertaken to develop a prototype digital resource to display a fine art collection at the National Library of Wales. The thesis first presents art historical investigations into the work of Kyffin Williams: the work of Kyffin Williams and his relationship with the National Library of Wales; the artist?s position within the canon of Welsh art history; and how ideas around space, place and landscape can contribute towards a fresh understanding of the artist?s work. This art historical inquiry is then used to develop a digital resource, called Kyffin Williams Online, to display the digitised Sir Kyffin Williams Bequest Collection of the National Library of Wales. The thesis addresses the incongruity of a large art collection being held in a library rather than museum or gallery and the restrictions of using reproductions of works of art. These restrictions are acknowledged and used to provide ways in which digitised works of art can be used for research for their own sake, rather than only as facsimiles or reproductions. This has been achieved by using the focus on space, place and landscape in the art historical investigation has been used to develop a geo-spatial presentation of content which is relevant to the art collections of the National Library. The thesis closes by using the resultant digital resource to show examples of how these methods can be used to further art historical investigation, and how the knowledge, expertise and methods used can be transferred to the National Library in its work with digitised collections.

This paper examines the styles, shapes, and chemical composition, and ceramic fabric of Minoan Barbotine Ware. During the Middle Minoan period, Barbotine Ware exemplifies the creative ingenuity of the Minoan potter. The vessels’ elaborate decorative motifs play an integral part in the development of Minoan pottery. Barbotine Ware remains an ill-defined tradition. This paper will analyze the styles and shapes of Barbotine Ware vessels, as well as provide a chemical and petrographic study of Barbotine Ware from Kommos. The ultimate goal is to provide a thorough study of all aspects of the Ware in the hopes that future scholars may better understand its place within Minoan pottery and appreciate how it exemplifies the spirit of experimentation during the Middle Bronze Age on Crete.

The genre of comics has had a tumultuous career throughout the twentieth century: it has careened from wildly popular to being perceived as the source of society’s ills. Despite having been relegated to the lowest rung of the artistic ladder for the better part of the twentieth century, comics has been gaining in quality and respectability over the last couple of decades. My introductory chapter provides a broad, basic introduction to the genre of comics––its historical development, its different forms, and a survey of comics criticism over the last thirty years. In chapter two I clarify the nature of comics by comparing it to literature, film, and pictorial art, thereby highlighting its hybrid nature. It has elements in common with all of these, and yet it is a distinct genre. My primary focus is on Chris Ware, whom I introduce in chapter three, a brilliant creator who has garnered widespread recognition and respect. His magnum opus is Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth, the story of four generations of Corrigan men, most of whom have been negligent in raising their children. Jimmy Corrigan, as a result, is an introverted, insecure thirty–something–year–old man. Among comics creators Ware is unusual in that his story does not address socio–political issues, like most of his peers, which I discuss in chapter four. Jimmy Corrigan is an isolated tale with a very specific focus. Ware’s narrative is somewhat like those of William Faulkner, whose stories have a narrow focus, revolving around the lives of the inhabitants of Yoknapatawpha county, rather than encompassing the vast landscape of national socio–political concerns. Also, in chapter five I explore the intriguing combination of realist and Gothic elements––normally at opposite ends of the generic continuum––that Ware merges in Jimmy Corrigan. This feature is especially interesting because it is another way that his work explores aspects of hybridity. Finally, in my conclusion I examine the current state of comics in American culture and its future prospects for development and success, as well as the potential for future comics criticism.

This Ph.D thesis evaluates the impact of the concept of risk on mental health law and policy in England following the introduction of the Mental Health Act 2007, which amended the Mental Health Act 1983. First, the thesis investigates the role played by risk as the principal policy driver of the 2007 Act, arguing that the concept’s renewed significance heralds an era of ‘New Medicalism’ in which the law’s determinative power is reduced in order to foster a greater responsiveness to patients’ risks. Secondly, it argues that the works of Ulrich Beck and Anthony Giddens, which popularised the ‘Risk Society’ perspective, and Michel Foucault, who developed the ‘Governmentality’ thesis, help to illuminate the prevailing trends in mental health policy in the 21st Century. The author contends that Foucault’s Governmentality thesis may provide the theoretical foundation on which the concept of risk was deployed by the policy-makers who shaped the 2007 Act. Thirdly, the thesis discusses the reason why risk is such a difficult concept to understand from a legal point of view. It shows that risk-based statutory provisions have the potential to undermine certainty in decision-making processes and notionally make it difficult for patients to predict the nature and extent of their engagement with mental health services. It also demonstrates that risk is a problematic concept for the courts, which have preferred to leave it as a matter of fact. Fourthly, and as a corollary, the thesis hypothesises that because of the greater prominence given to risk there is now more control of, and less liberty for, patients with mental disorder following the introduction of the 2007 Act. To test this, the author draws upon literature examining the current state of play in mental health practice, the legal oversight of psychiatric decision-making, and the significance of law reform on mental health practice. He finds that in fact the law is rarely determinative of mental health decision-making and that legislative changes do not fundamentally alter the functioning of the compulsory powers. As a result, there is no evidence to suggest that the 2007 Act has jeopardised patients’ liberty whilst facilitating greater control over them. For that reason, the final chapter offers a defence of the concept of risk in mental health law. It argues that while the law can never achieve certainty, the concept’s inclusion reflects the realities of mental health practice and allows decision-makers to operate according to their training and expertise. This chapter argues that mental health practitioners possess a level of knowledge and understanding of risk which defies objective explication. While mental health policy may be shaped by the desire to control deviance and the law may be drafted to accomplish that end, the reality is that practitioners invariably achieve the ‘right’ outcome notwithstanding legal and policy uncertainties. The thesis concludes that the 2007 Act has aligned the law with the realities of mental health practice and, for that reason, has not directly jeopardised liberty.

In this paper we construct explicit examples of solutions to certain nonlinear wave equations. These semilinear equations are the simplest equations known to possess localized solitary waves in more that one spatial dimension. We construct explicit localized standing wave solutions, which generate multidimensional localized traveling solitary waves under the action of velocity boosts. We study the case of two spatial dimensions and a piecewise-linear nonlinearity. We obtain a large subset of the infinite family of standing waves, and we exhibit several interesting features of the family. Our solutions include solitary waves that carry nonzero angular momenta in their rest frames. The spatial profiles of these solutions also furnish examples of symmetry breaking for nonlinear elliptic equations.

The main goal of this thesis is to find out whether National football league players are, even 15 years after the birth of unrestricted free agency, still paid monopsonistic salaries or whether competition among NFL teams eliminated them. After a theoretical discussion, which will help to form expectations about the player market, models in line with the standard theory of labor compensation and with Becker's human capital theory are estimated. The part of the research following the standard theory focuses mainly on estimations of players' marginal revenue product and subsequently on comparison of their wages with their MRP. To do so, OLS regressions, as well as quantile regressions, are run. The part of the research following the human capital theory has a supporting role and is used to further confirm the previous findings. It is represented by OLS player salary estimation. The hypothesis that players under a full control of their teams are still paid salaries below their MRP cannot be rejected, thus confirming a presence of monopsonistic salaries. A significant effect of free agency status on player salaries is also found. Exclusive rights players are paid significantly lower salaries than all free agents, while restricted free agents are paid significantly lower salaries than unrestricted free agents. Superstar players are found to have salaries in excess of their MRP regardless of their free agency status.

This thesis addresses some theoretical issues generated by the results of recent analysis of EEG time series proving the brain dynamics are driven by abrupt changes making them depart from the ordinary Poisson condition. These changes are renewal, unpredictable and non-ergodic. We refer to them as crucial events. How is it possible that this form of randomness be compatible with the generation of waves, for instance alpha waves, whose observation seems to suggest the opposite view the brain is characterized by surprisingly extended coherence? To shed light into this apparently irretrievable contradiction we propose a model based on a generalized form of Langevin equation under the influence of a periodic stimulus. We assume that there exist two different forms of time, a subjective form compatible with Poisson statistical physical and an objective form that is accessible to experimental observation. The transition from the former to the latter form is determined by the brain dynamics interpreted as emerging from the cooperative interaction among many units that, in the absence of cooperation would generate Poisson fluctuations. We call natural time the brain internal time and we make the assumption that in the natural time representation the time evolution of the EEG variable y(t) is determined by a Langevin equation perturbed by a periodic process that in this time representation is hardly distinguishable from an erratic process. We show that the representation of this random process in the experimental time scale is characterized by a surprisingly extended coherence. We show that this model generates a sequence of damped oscillations with a time behavior that is remarkably similar to that derived from the analysis of real EEG's. The main result of this research work is that the existence of crucial events is not incompatible with the alpha wave coherence. In addition to this important result, we find another result that may help our group, or any other research group working on the analysis of brain's dynamics, to prove or to disprove the existence of crucial events. We study the diffusion process generated by fluctuations emerging from the same model after filtering out the alpha coherence, and we study the recursion to the origin. We study the survival probability of this process, namely the probability that up to a given time no re-crossing of the origin occurs. We find that this is an inverse power law with a power that depends on whether or not crucial events exist.

This dissertation examines how caregiving for an elderly parent affects an adult child's labor supply and wages. In the first chapter (co-authored with Courtney H. Van Houtven and Norma B. Coe) we identify the relationship between informal care and labor force participation in the United States, both on the intensive and extensive margins, and examine wage effects. We control for time-invariant individual heterogeneity; rule out or control for endogeneity; examine effects for men and women separately; and analyze heterogeneous effects by task and intensity. We find modest decreases--1.4-2.4 percentage points--in the likelihood of working for caregivers providing personal care. Male and female chore caregivers, meanwhile, are more likely to retire. For female care providers who remain working, we find evidence that they decrease work by 3-10 hours per week and face a 2.3-2.6 percent wage penalty. We find little effect of caregiving on working men's hours or wages except for a wage premium for male intensive caregivers. In the second chapter I formulate and estimate a dynamic discrete choice model of elder parent care and work to analyze how caregiving affects a woman's current and future labor force participation and wages. Intertemporal tradeoffs, such as decreased future earning capacity due to a current reduction in labor market work, are central to the decision to provide care. The existing literature, however, overlooks such long-term considerations. I depart from the previous literature by modeling caregiving and work decisions in an explicitly intertemporal framework. The model incorporates dynamic elements such as the health of the elderly parent, human capital accumulation and job offer availability. I estimate the model on a sample of women from the Health and Retirement Study by efficient method of moments. The estimates indicate that intertemporal tradeoffs matter considerably. In particular, women face low probabilities of returning to work or increasing work hours after a caregiving spell. Using the estimates, I simulate several government sponsored elder care policy experiments: a longer unpaid leave than currently available under the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993; a paid work leave; and a caregiver allowance. The leaves encourage more work among intensive care providers since they guarantee a woman can return to her job, while the caregiver allowance discourages work. A comparison of the welfare gains generated by the policies shows that half the value of the paid leave can be achieved with the unpaid leave, and the caregiver allowance generates gains comparable to the unpaid leave

This thesis brings together a series of work undertaken in partial fulfilment of the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Volume I – Research: Literature review; empirical paper; and public dissemination document providing an accessible summary of this volume. The literature review draws together the extant literature on what is known about what happens when the police detain people experiencing mental health crises. It offers a systematic search of relevant bibliographic databases, and findings are discussed within the context of the limitations of the review and the implications for future practice and research. In building on the work of this review, the empirical paper goes on to explore how police officers understand and experience the use of Section 136 of the Mental Health Act (1983/2007). This study employed interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore ten officers’ (from the English Midlands) experiences of this aspect of their work. Volume II – Clinical practice reports: Outlining work undertaken on placements from adult, older adult, learning disability, and physical health specialties. The reports consist of: a case study illustrating a dual formulation approach; a service evaluation; a single case experimental design study; a case study; and the abstract for an oral presentation of a case study.

This study examines the attitudes to, and commemoration of, death in Wales in the period between the end of the thirteenth century and the middle of the sixteenth century by analysis of the poetical work produced during this period. In so doing, this is placed in the wider context of death and commemoration in Europe. Although there are a number of memorial tombs and some evidence of religious visual art in Wales which has survived from the late medieval period, in comparison with that to be found in many other European countries, this is often neither so commonplace nor so imposing. However, the poetry produced during this period very much reflects the visual material that was produced in other parts of Europe. The poetry shows that the Welsh gentry at that time were familiar with many of the themes surrounding death and commemoration so obvious in European visual art such as the macabre and the fate of both the body and the soul after death. With war, famine and disease being so commonplace during the Middle Ages, and the late medieval period witnessing the effects of the Black Death, it is, perhaps, little wonder that macabre imagery and concerns about the fate of the soul were so often produced in European visual art of the time. These concerns are reflected in the Welsh poetry of the period with several poets composing quite vivid poetry describing the fate of the body as a decomposing corpse after death or allusions to the personification of Death appearing to claim its victims. The tension that many felt between the role of God on Judgement Day and God as Redeemer is also apparent in a number of the poems composed at this time. This study shows how important the role of the poet was amongst the gentry in Wales during the late medieval period, a role which ensured that the patrons of the poets were immortalised in words rather than by physical memorials. It also highlights the importance of poetical works of the period as an important primary source for historical research. Many of the poems give a contemporaneous account of important events of the period such as symptoms of plague victims which confirm that the Black Death was indeed the bubonic form of the plague.

Please see the pdf version of the abstract for an accurate reproduction.] Wave run-up is the vertical uprush of water when an incident wave impinges on a free- surface penetrating body. For large volume offshore structures the wave run-up on the weather side of the supporting columns is particularly important for air-gap design and ultimately the avoidance of pressure impulse loads on the underside of the deck structure. This investigation focuses on the limitations of conventional wave diffraction theory, where the free-surface boundary condition is treated by a Stokes expansion, in predicting the harmonic components of the wave run-up, and the presentation of a simplified procedure for the prediction of wave run-up. The wave run-up is studied on fixed vertical cylinders in plane progressive waves. These progressive waves are of a form suitable for description by Stokes' wave theory whereby the typical energy content of a wave train consists of one fundamental harmonic and corresponding phase locked Fourier components. The choice of monochromatic waves is indicative of ocean environments for large volume structures in the diffraction regime where the assumption of potential flow theory is applicable, or more formally A/a < Ο(1) (A and a being the wave amplitude and cylinder radius respectively). One of the unique aspects of this work is the investigation of column geometry effects - in terms of square cylinders with rounded edges - on the wave run-up. The rounded edges of each cylinder are described by the dimensionless parameter rc/a which denotes the ratio of edge corner radius to half-width of a typical column with longitudinal axis perpendicular to the quiescent free-surface. An experimental campaign was undertaken where the wave run-up on a fixed column in plane progressive waves was measured with wire probes located close to the cylinder. Based on an appropriate dimensional analysis, the wave environment was represented by a parametric variation of the scattering parameter ka and wave steepness kA (where k denotes the wave number). The effect of column geometry was investigated by varying the edge corner radius ratio within the domain 0 <=rc/a <= 1, where the upper and lower bounds correspond to a circular and square shaped cylinder respectively. The water depth is assumed infinite so that the wave run-up caused purely by wave-structure interaction is examined without the additional influence of a non-decaying horizontal fluid velocity and finite depth effects on wave dispersion. The zero-, first-, second- and third-harmonics of the wave run-up are examined to determine the importance of each with regard to local wave diffraction and incident wave non-linearities. The modulus and phase of these harmonics are compared to corresponding theoretical predictions from conventional diffraction theory to second-order in wave steepness. As a result, a basis is formed for the applicability of a Stokes expansion to the free-surface boundary condition of the diffraction problem, and its limitations in terms of local wave scattering and incident wave non-linearities. An analytical approach is pursued and solved in the long wavelength regime for the interaction of a plane progressive wave with a circular cylinder in an ideal fluid. The classical Stokesian assumption of infinitesimal wave amplitude is invoked to treat the free-surface boundary condition along with an unconventional requirement that the cylinder width is assumed much smaller than the incident wavelength. This additional assumption is justified because critical wavelengths for wave run-up on a fixed cylinder are typically much larger in magnitude than the cylinder's width. In the solution, two coupled perturbation schemes, incorporating a classical Stokes expansion and cylinder slenderness expansion, are invoked and the boundary value problem solved to third-order. The formulation of the diffraction problem in this manner allows for third-harmonic diffraction effects and higher-order effects operating at the first-harmonic to be found. In general, the complete wave run-up is not well accounted for by a second-order Stokes expansion of the free-surface boundary condition and wave elevation. This is however, dependent upon the coupling of ka and kA. In particular, whilst the modulus and phase of the second-harmonic are moderately predicted, the mean set-up is not well predicted by a second-order Stokes expansion scheme. This is thought to be caused by higher than second-order non-linear effects since experimental evidence has revealed higher-order diffraction effects operating at the first-harmonic in waves of moderate to large steepness when k < < 1. These higher-order effects, operating at the first-harmonic, can be partially accounted for by the proposed long wavelength formulation. For small ka and large kA, subsequent comparisons with measured results do indeed provide a better agreement than the classical linear diffraction solution of Havelock (1940). To account for the complete wave run-up, a unique approach has been adopted where a correction is applied to a first-harmonic analytical solution. The remaining non-linear portion is accounted for by two methods. The first method is based on regression analysis in terms of ka and kA and provides an additive correction to the first-harmonic solution. The second method involves an amplification correction of the first-harmonic. This utilises Bernoulli's equation applied at the mean free-surface position where the constant of proportionality is empirically determined and is inversely proportional to ka. The experimental and numerical results suggest that the wave run-up increases as rc/a--› 0, however this is most significant for short waves and long waves of large steepness. Of the harmonic components, experimental evidence suggests that the effect of a variation in rc/a on the wave run-up is particularly significant for the first-harmonic only. Furthermore, the corner radius effect on the first-harmonic wave run-up is well predicted by numerical calculations using the boundary element method. Given this, the proposed simplified wave run-up model includes an additional geometry correction which accounts for rc/a to first-order in local wave diffraction. From a practical view point, it is the simplified model that is most useful for platform designers to predict the wave run-up on a surface piercing column. It is computationally inexpensive and the comparison of this model with measured results has proved more promising than previously proposed schemes.

The fluid circulation patterns, temperature distributions, and density gradients of the South Arm of the Great Salt Lake were modeled using the Estuary, Lake, and Coastal Ocean Model (ELCOM) from the Centre for Water Research at the University of Western Australia. The effort is part of a research study in conjunction with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Utah Water Research Lab located at Utah State University. The model was simulated for several different cases of salinity gradients over different time periods, using temperature and wind data from 2006. The model is then used to identify factors which may provide a transport mechanism of heavy metals such as selenium and mercury from the sediment layers to the upper brine layers where it is introduced into the food chain.

This thesis is about individuals and groups - and about judgements made of individuals because of their membership of groups. I argue that the concept of caste can illuminate our understanding of discrimination. Chapter I adumbrates the properties of a group. Chapters" draws a distinction between two types of statistical discrimination: between extrapolations based on characteristics like race, sex or eye colour and those based on past behaviour. But within the former category we feel more strongly about discrimination based on sex than discrimination based on eye-colour. Chapters III explains why this is so. attempt to show that the concept of caste is essential for making sense of our intuitions. Race and sex are not supposed to be relevant in a meritocracy - potential employees and university applicants are supposed to be assessed on their individual worth. And yet there are cases where an individual's worth to a company may be a function of a characteristic like skin colour - such as when customers are racist and would rather not be served by a black person. Chapter IV attempts to reconcile this tension within merit. If we wish to break down caste, I argue, then far from pandering to the racist attitudes of the customers, the employer may have an added reason to employ somebody who is black. This brings us to Chapter V, and some reflections on how caste can illuminate the impassioned debate on affirmative action. But should we wish to break down caste? What is wrong with a society being rigidly split? Chapter VI offers a tentative answer, in the liberal tradition. The answer has something to do with autonomy. Chapters VII and VIII then examine two final areas where groups are relevant, and where caste can once again shed light: voting rights, and animal rights.

There are no written sources are available from the Predynastic period, but an array of art decorated artefacts has been found. This essay will take a closer look at one type of these artefact; the animal shaped stone palette to see what art of this artefact can tell us about the culture that made them.      I will do so by looking at the animal depictions found on the palettes, to allow comparison I will include D-wear, a decorated Predynastic pottery type. I have put together two data sets for the respective artefact that forms the base for this study. My theoretical perspective is that the art depictions of artefact as traces of the culture that made them. The palettes show a variety of patterns that can be seen as such traces in which type of animals are most common, how the animals can be connected by habitat and which animal depiction gets decorated features. My look at the D-ware data set is only brief but shows that animals are quite rare on the pottery and includes only three different kinds of animals. These still correlates with the animal palettes by both artefacts having birds as the most common. The bovids has an almost equal occurrence on the palettes and D-ware in my data sets. Other than this the animal depictions differ notably between the two artefacts. As the traces of culture does not provide any details, this study has given new questions that can be studied further in greater depth.

Анотація:
This thesis examines the linkages between macroeconomic variables and the number of domestic Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) in Sweden during 1998-2011 (in terms of changes). This study treats stationary times series data, from which multiple regression models are assembled. These models include gross domestic product, OMX Stockholm price index, lending rate, money supply, debt rate, consumer confidence, the unemployment rate and capacity utilization as explanatory variables. Aggregate number of M&As is set to the dependent variable. The outcome was that gross domestic product, money supply, unemployment rate and stock prices can help explain fluctuations in M&A activity during different time frames. However, the majority of the explanation for fluctuations in M&A activity lies within factors beyond ourestimation model. Through a Granger-causality test, we establish if the significant variables can help to predict M&A activity and vice versa. During different time periods gross domestic product and unemployment helps in predicting M&A activity. M&A activity also improves the prediction of gross domestic product in some time periods.
