This paper considers W.E.B. Du Bois’s short story, “Jesus Christ in Texas,” in the perspective of his analysis of the concept of beauty in Darkwater (1920); his exposition of the idea that “all art is propaganda” in “Criteria of Negro Art” (1926); and his moral psychology of white supremacy. On my account, Du Bois holds that beautiful art can help to undermine white supremacy by using representations of moral goodness to expand the white supremacist’s ethical horizons. To defend this thesis, he relies on an image of “the cross and the lynching tree” to revise imagery that he draws from Albrecht Dürer’s 1504 painting, “The Adoration of Kings.”

The object of research of this article is Soviet propaganda porcelain, produced at the very beginning of the formation of Soviet Russia. The paper considers the beginning of the formation of a new porcelain production after the October Revolution of 1917, which took part in the framework of the Soviet monumental propaganda plan. This plan was developed by the leader of the revolution V.I. Lenin. The transformation of artistic techniques and images used on products made of “white gold” was also analyzed. The image on plates, vases, cups of communist slogans, symbols and portraits of revolutionary persons marked the beginning of the creation of such a unique phenomenon as propaganda porcelain, which was supposed to educate Soviet citizens in the context of party policy. The best Russian artists and sculptors of the first quarter of the 20th century worked on its creation. Therefore, the propaganda porcelain turned out to be highly artistic, which was the reason for its success at the international exhibitions and popularity among foreign collectors. However, this fact, combined with the complexity of production, has formed a high cost of products. This did not allow plates and cups with party calls and portraits of the leaders of the proletariat to penetrate into the wider population and conduct ideological propaganda in the everyday life. At the same time, through the products exhibited abroad, a demonstration of Soviet attributes and culture in general was made, which positively influenced the recognition of the new Russia abroad as an objective reality.

In this paper, we are focusing on the process of art politicking in Yugoslav art theory in the period from 1945 to 1952. The work time span is determined by the existence of the Apparatus for agitation and propaganda, by means of which the development of art theory and practice was greatly determined in the postwar Yugoslavia. The set problem is to be approached through consideration of demands which official art theory was set to Yugoslav artist of this period, as well as through consideration of artistic and theoretic frames by which perspective of art politicking was determined. In this paper, art politicking is seen like specific manifestation of ideological position by which official political platform in the period from 1945 to 1952 was built. According to this, interpretation of art politicking not only as act of propaganda, but as well as symbol of fight for accomplishment of vision of new Yugoslav society is proposed.

The territorial integrity of Ukraine and peace on its lands, preservation of state sovereignty are the main tasks of the Ukrainian government, society, and all Ukrainians. As for as today the real threats from the Russian Federation remain, the Kremlin's aggressive policy in the hybrid war against our state is aimed at returning Ukraine to the sphere of Russia's influence. For doing this the Russian Federation is using methods that destabilize the internal situation in Ukraine, first of all, it depletes the Ukrainian economy, uses a powerful propaganda arsenal to distort Ukrainian national values and national culture, and misleads the allies of the Ukrainian state. A large-scale propaganda campaign against our country in certain areas of the Ukrainian state made it possible to perceive events in Ukraine through the prism of the views of politicians, scientists and artists of the Russian Federation. In such a situation, it is possible to confront Russian aggression only by using a complex of military, political, economic, informational and socio-humanitarian actions. In these conditions, culture and art are becoming an important means of solving complex social conflicts. Modern technological development has created a wide field for cultural and artistic influences, which has the opportunity to play a stabilizing role in the state. The through the influence on social consciousness can achieve important results in creating of certain ideas, values, spiritual needs as well as stereotypes and patriotic ideals. Such special way of influence on social conscious is art. The art represents significant and value dimension of the national being of the Ukrainians, gives a vision of historical being of the Ukrainian national, reflects spiritual links between a personality and the national, spiritual unity and succession of generation; both imaginative-symbolic and significant attributes of the national values and ideals are characteristic of it. Therefore, the question of restoration of peace, consolidation of Ukrainians, de-occupation of Ukrainian territories is considered in the context of conducting various cultural state measures, in particular artistic ones. That is why such purposeful usage of art in modern conditions the can be a powerful factor of consolidation of Ukrainians.

Abstract This essay offers an analysis of “The Truth about the Paterson Strike,” Elizabeth Gurley Flynn's 1914 speech containing her ideas about the nature of propaganda in radical working-class movements. Flynn defines propaganda as ideological education, and her speech highlights the importance of oratory to early twentieth century radical propaganda campaigns. These ideas belie fundamental principles of contemporary propaganda studies, which define propaganda as manipulative, mass mediated persuasion to advance the interests of powerful elites and institutions, and contain oratory within the ethical art of rhetoric. The study concludes by recommending that the purview of propaganda studies be expanded to include Flynn's activities and those of other radical propagandists.

In the article the author considers the problem of using art as the political power instrument. The subject of the study is the analysis of applied arts possibilities as a means of political propaganda and agitation, the necessary qualities and political views formation in a person. The material for the analysis is the Soviet propaganda porcelain of the 1920s. The choice of this material is caused, firstly, by its great visibility in the framework of the discussed problem, and, secondly, by the negative result of its use in real politics (at first sight, paradoxical). At present, Soviet propaganda porcelain is considered to be a “unique phenomenon” of Russian and world art. However, the main reason for its appearance at the beginning of the 20th century was not the search for new art forms. After coming to power in 1917, the Bolshevists faced the need to form political views of the citizens that were compatible with the party course — in general, to form a “new man” capable of living in a new society. On the one hand, porcelain was a random choice at that period of time (1920-s) but, on the other hand, people assigned specific characteristics to it as a type of applied art. And, therefore, they ascribed to it the possibilities of an instrument of political power. But at the same time using it in that capacity is greatly limited due to other specific properties, as well as due to other historical circumstances. The main reason for the failure of Soviet propaganda porcelain as the political propaganda and agitation means is the contradiction between the course of political power and the essence of porcelain as a phenomenon, i.e. inconsistency between the goal and the means to achieve it. In general, the author draws a conclusion that there is a difference between the goals of art and power and, as a consequence, the groundlessness of the power attempts to consider art exclusively as its own tool.

Visual propaganda played an enormous role in the history of the twentieth century. Unlike the propaganda of nineteenth century, it was aimed not only at educated classes in the imperial centres, but also at subaltern masses living in the colonies of great powers, including the vast territories in the east and south of the former Russian Empire. Posters created for (and with the assistance of) Muslims between the two world wars in the Soviet Orient (i.e., in the Volga region, Crimea, Urals, and Siberia, on the Caucasus and in the Central Asia) represent an enormous and still poorly studied layer in the history of Soviet propaganda. So far, the posters have been studied primarily in the context of art history. But the creation of visual propaganda is critical for historical reconstructions as well. It is more important to understand posters’ language, historical context, attitude to public policy, cultural background, in other words—the discourse of propaganda. This is a part of life, even if semiofficial, the loss of which would simplify and impoverish the picture of the past. Discursive analysis of poster art allows one to understand the relationship between knowledge and power in society, the role of different social strata in its reproduction, and the aspects of perception and rejection of official propaganda.

It has become fashionable to discover political allusions in subjects painted on Attic pottery of the Archaic period. These allusions are of two kinds, not always clearly distinguished. One is deliberate party propaganda, especially for or against Pisistratus or his sons. The other, which reflects results of political action, need not have political intent: Theseus, for instance, was becoming more popular in Athens by the end of the sixth century, with official encouragement it seems, and his more frequent representation in art may be due simply to that popularity. Here I am concerned only with partisan propaganda, and particularly that concerning Pisistratus and his equation with Heracles. Though the propagandist theory has by now quite a literature, it is surprising that there has been little objection, at least in print.

This study discusses Djawa Baroe as a Japanese Propaganda Media in Java in 1943-1945. Djawa Baroewas a pictorial magazine published during the Japanese Occupation Government in Java as a medium for transferring information to the Dutch East Indies population containing propaganda news. The problems studied in this study are the press policy of the Japanese Occupation Government in Java, the form of Japanese Occupation Government propaganda in the fields of education, literature and art, socio-culture, and military as appearing in Djawa Baroe, as well as examining the impact of Japanese Occupation Government propaganda in the fields. The method used in this study was the historical method from Louis Gottschalk, which includes the stages of data collection, source criticism, interpretation and historiography. This study uses a political science approach and propaganda theory developed by Miriam Budiarjo and Laswell. When controlling the Dutch East Indies, the Japanese Occupation Government used the press as a means of propaganda, one of which was through Djawa Baroe. The pictures displayed in Djawa Baroe form a picture of every activity carried out by the Dutch East Indies in the fields of education, literature and art, socio-culture and military as an activity that seemed perfect for wartime. In fact, in real life, the activities displayed in Djawa Baroe are not the same, because the Javanese people experienced many hardships in life during the war.

Recently, it has been observed that people are shifting away from traditional news media sources towards trusting social networks to gather news information. Social networks have become the primary news source, although the validity and reliability of the information provided are uncertain. Memes are crucial content types that are very popular among young people and play a vital role in social media. It spreads quickly and continues to spread rapidly among people in a peer-to-peer manner rather than a prescriptive. Unfortunately, promoters and propagandists have adopted memes to indirectly manipulate public opinion and influence their attitudes using psychological and rhetorical techniques. This type of content could lead to unpleasant consequences in communities. This paper introduces an ensemble model system that resolves one of the most recent natural language processing research topics; propaganda techniques detection in texts extracted from memes. The paper also explores state-of-the-art pretrained language models. The proposed model also uses different optimization techniques, such as data augmentation and model ensemble. It has been evaluated using a reference dataset from SemEval-2021 task 6. Our system outperforms the baseline and state-of-the-art results by achieving an F1-micro score of 0.604% on the test set.

When one visits the rooms dedicated to Velásquez in the Museum of Prado, it is extraordinary how portraits of kings and those of jesters and peasants are laid side-by-side. The nobility and dignity given to the lower members of the court exemplifies an early example of a revolution in the politics of representation. In the antipodes of this example, we analyse how the campaign of the millionaire Michael Bloomberg to be the Democratic Candidate for the 2020 elections hired companies to produce nonsense memes and digital propaganda. Our hypothesis is that on the center of its strategy the goal was to create an image of Bloomberg that besides viral would be relatable and humorous. The article overviews the evolution of the portrait as an element of political of representation and reflects on how the development of modern and contemporary art transformed the art of political portraiture. Furthermore it deliberates on the two-way appropriation of representation techniques between art movements and political movements. Propaganda is an attempt to spread social and political values to influence peoples thinking, as well as to control and shape their behavior. It is an inseparable tool of the North Korean state. In a totalitarian state where digital information is restricted, the standards of living are low, and access to education is limited, propaganda is a part of almost all everyday routines. Its key function is to support the existing regime and teach citizens to obey it. Drawing on semiotic methodologies, this article examines North Korean propaganda through the prism of visual art and identifies distinctive features of posters as one of the major elements of the complex system of North Korean propaganda. The relevance of this work lies in the permanent interest in the phenomenon of North Korean propaganda in the international arena. The purpose of this work is to study the distinctive features and characteristics of propaganda posters as an integral part of North Korean propaganda. The objectives of this work are a detailed consideration of the propaganda system, its distinctive features, structuring of campaign posters, slogans, and messages with their accompanying translation, embedded within this type of propaganda.

Television is a popular medium that is used as a propaganda tool in spreading ideologies. As such, the continuous propagation of ideologies through television fiddles with the sentiment of the public over time. This is obvious through various media campaigns that was broadcasted through television during the 14th general election of Malaysia in 2018. These media campaigns propagate the idea of ‘change’ by presenting audio-visual information that instigates a euphoric reaction. ‘Beauty (fool) of destruction’ is an experimental video art prompted by such propagation and its effect on society. This essay discusses the creation of the video work and its adaptation of the Malay proverb ‘Indah Khabar dari Rupa’ as a reaction to the political campaigns of the 14th general election. The Bombing of Guernica stands as the best-known war crime during the Spanish Civil War. The town symbolically representing the Basque essences was destroyed by a German-Italian air raid lasting over three hours, and almost two hundred people were killed. Unfortunately, this abominable event remains contentious among disparate political factions, sometimes upholding its memory by means of tailor-made interpretations. As music often performs a political role within conflicts, particularly those involving violence, it is not surprising that the Bombing of Guernica has inspired several compositions of art music. Among them, we study three works by Basque composers, namely Pablo Sorozábal, Francisco Escudero, and Ramon Lazkano. Each case study respectively stands, politically speaking, as a propagandistic event, a musical appropriation, and a collateral depoliticization of the vivid memories around the war crime.

Abstract The focus of this article is on the social caricatures which Vladimir Vasil’evich Lebedev (1891–1967) produced just before and after 1917, especially for the journals Satirikon and Novyi Satirikon (New Satyricon), tо which his immediate colleagues such as Boris Grigor’ev and Vladimir Kozlinsky also contributed. With copious references to Lebedev’s personal archive and to his domestic “laboratory” of cut-outs and preliminary drawings, the text and illustrations treat of Lebedev’s satirical attitudes towards both the bourgeoisie and the political élite and of his often ambivalent depiction of “friends” and “enemies,” a condition also evident in his ROSTA posters and in Nikolai Punin’s 1922 book of reproductions called Russkii plakat 1917–1922. A key argument is that during the 1910s–1930s, ideological pressures notwithstanding, Lebedev managed to retain an esthetic distance and that, rather than kowtow to a given regime, ultimately, found artistic refuge in illustrations for children’s books, often in collaboration with writers such as Samuil Marshak.

The period of the Second World War was the most drastic period on the behalf of Soviet propaganda. In this period, the Soviet media and the art world encouraged the people to fight voluntarily and to resist the attacks of Nazi Germany with all their might. Among these propaganda works, the "TASS Windows" “Okna ‘Tass’” art team has managed to stay in mind even today by making great efforts during the war. The article mentions the "TASS Windows" poster series, created by talented writers and painters voluntarily. The aim of our study is to explain the background, formation process and artistic methods of this poster series and to introduce these posters that had a great impact on the course of the war.

"Marking Time" considers the relative scarcity of woman's image in Nazi propaganda posters during World War II. This scarcity departs from the ubiquity of women in paintings and sculptures of the same period. In the fine arts, woman served to solidify the "Nazi myth" and its claim to the timeless time of an Aryan order simultaneously achieved and yet to come. Looking at poster art and using Ernst Bloch's notion of the nonsynchronous, this essay explores the extent to which women as signifiers of the modern – and thus as markers of time – threatened to expose the limits of this Nazi myth especially as the regime's war effort ground to its catastrophic end.
