The New Global Insecurity: How Terrorism, Environmental Collapse, Economic Inequalities, and Resource Shortages Are Changing Our World explores insecurity arising out of accelerating globalization. In this unique and forward-thinking work, psychologist Fathali M. Moghaddam, director of the Conflict Studies Program at Georgetown University, explains how and why worldwide insecurity is rising and what steps we must take to quell or reverse that insecurity to make the future of the world more peaceful. The book first analyzes the elements and roots of global insecurity, discussing it in relation to terrorism, torture, economic instability, threatened identity, and religious fundamentalism. It then puts forward a new model for understanding security, wherein "soft security capital" serves as the enabling condition for "hard security capital." Finally, the current policies for managing diversity, "multiculturalism" and "assimilation" are both rejected in favor of an exciting new policy—"omniculturalism". Drawing on his years of study and expertise, Moghaddam likewise proposes a new policy for better managing intergroup relations in an insecure age.

During the 20th century, health inequalities among countries have increased. Several factors explain this pattern, such as immunization and massive antibiotherapy, but nutrition, housing and hygiene are key parameters for health improvement. This heterogeneity among countries is well illustrated by malaria, although disappeared from many high-income countries, is still endemic and prevalent in low- and middle-income countries. We question these differences and detail the recommendations proposed by the World Health Organization to tackle malaria. We investigate the optimal combination of actions to deploy in resource-limited countries and the best spatio-temporal window to target. We propose a new framework for health program management based on evolutionary biology approaches to tailor global programs, to improve their local efficiency and avoid resistance. Thus, we explore all components of the ecological niche of the parasite (human, vector and environment) and consider the magnitude of actions to deploy to reach its local.

This chapter discusses the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) technical cooperation activities, the main objective of which is to assist developing countries to build up their human and institutional capabilities. These are basic requirements for the uniform and effective compliance with their obligations under IMO regulations and thereby to promote the IMO aim of safe, secure, environmentally sound and sustainable shipping. The chapter outlines the history and development of the IMO’s technical assistance programme. It highlights the IMO’s achievements in the field of technical cooperation, with emphasis on the development of human resources through training and other similar programmes. The chapter discusses in this regard the important roles played by the IMO-International Maritime Law Institute in Malta and the World Maritime University in Malmo.

Many local community groups and coalitions are interested in creating anti-stigma activities in their communities; often with limited resources and largely volunteer labor. This section is targeted to local groups and individuals who wish to conduct an anti-stigma program and provides direction on how to conduct meaningful activities on a limited budget. Advice is pragmatic and based on our experiences with local, national, and international anti-stigma efforts, but particularly with the World Psychiatric Association’s global anti-stigma network. These experiences have taught us that everyone can take part in anti-stigma programming, and that modest efforts are possible for anyone to achieve.

The program starts on Sunday (August 8th) with two panel discussion sessions, one on “Energy, Environment and Economy” and the other one on “Energy and Education” where current challenges, potential solutions, opportunities and future directions are discussed by the leading experts. The program opens its technical sessions on Monday with the formal opening talks where the TUBA President, Minister of Industry and Technology, and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources deliver their speeches. The program continues with 29 plenary/ keynote speakers, 27 invited speakers and over 121 general speakers on four days which make an exceptionally designed conference in the area of energy science and technology. It then ends on Thursday (August 12th) with a panel discussion session and closing remarks. Furthermore, there are general sessions where many research talks are delivered by researchers, scientists, engineers, and technologists to disseminate high-quality research results and present new findings. Local and global online participations are expected from academia, government agencies, and industry to bring all players together, and the conference is then expected to lead to effective and fruitful discussions and collaborations among these attendants from different disciplines, institutes, and sectors from all over the world. Moreover, it is planned to have some special issues in various reputable international journals to publish high-quality papers out of the conference.

The passion to be a force for change, to work on the positive side of globalization, and to be part of a movement for human rights has called many young people to the field of global health. This passion stems from the knowledge that the world is not okay. Impoverished people are suffering and dying from treatable diseases while the wealthy live well into their 80s and 90s. Before the 21st century, people living in countries marred by slavery, colonialism, resource extraction, and neoliberal market policies had little access to health care. Public health in the 19th and 20th centuries focused on low-cost prevention programs instead of advancing the human right to health. In the mid-1990s, as the AIDS pandemic swept the African continent, an activist movement sparked new investment in the delivery of health care. This movement emphasized the need for a constant supply of drugs, good laboratories, and trained health workers to mitigate health disparities. This book captures the momentum for the delivery of care that began in the AIDS era and the launch of the Millennium Development Goals through the Sustainable Development Goals. The global health era in this book is defined as beginning with the AIDS activist-led fight to move from prevention only to the delivery of comprehensive health care. Of 1.2 billion adolescents in the world today, 90% live in low- and middle-income countries. These adolescents not only face many challenges but also represent a resource to be cultivated through educational opportunities and vocational training to move them toward economic independence, through initiatives to improve reproductive health, and through positive interpersonal relationships to help them avoid risky behaviors and make positive decisions about their futures. This volume tackles the challenges and promise of adolescence by presenting cutting-edge research on adolescent social, emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and physical development; promising programs from different countries to promote adolescents’ positive development; and policies that can advance adolescents’ rights within the framework of international initiatives, such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child and Sustainable Development Goals, which are guiding the international development agenda through 2030. This volume seeks to provide actionable strategies for policymakers and practitioners working with adolescents. Disconnects between national-level policies and local services, as well as lack of continuity with early childhood responses, present a significant challenge to ensuring a coherent approach for adolescents. Increasingly, adolescent participation and demands for rights-based approaches are seen and often unfortunately conflated with violence. This volume adopts a positive framing of adolescence, representing young people as opportunities rather than threats, and a valued investment both at individual and societal levels, contributing to a positive shift in discourses around young people.

This publication presents the program and abstracts of the V International Vavilov Conference: dedicated to N.I. Vavilov's 135th birthday, held in St. Petersburg on November 21–25, 2022 jointly with the V International Scientific Conference Genetics and Biotechnology of the 21st Century: Problems, Achievements and Prospects (Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus) and St. Petersburg Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the Event/Conference). November 25, 2022 marks the 135th birthday of Academician Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov, an outstanding scientist, botanist, geneticist, geographer, plant expert, founder of the global collection of cultivated plants, director of VIR (1920–1940), editor-in-chief and inspirer of the journal Proceedings on Applied Botany, Genetics and Breeding. The Conference discussed further activities and presented the first results of the formation of the National Center for Plant Genetic Resources on the basis of VIR, in accordance with the Decrees of February 8, 2022 on the establishment of the National Center for Plant Genetic Resources and the Interdepartmental Commission coordinating its work. The Conference's tasks included the issues of plant genetic resources: conservation, study and utilization. The event included the Conference Plant Genetic Resources: Conservation, Studying and Utilization, the Youth Conference The F3 Generation: Commemorating the 135th Birthday of Nikolay Vavilov, the Conference 100 Years of Scientific Support for the Effective Use of Legume Genetic Resources in Russia, and the round tables: Companions and Followers of N.I. Vavilov – in the Regions of Russia; Weedy Plants: Urgent Issues in the Study of Their Diversity, Origin and Evolution; Triticale: a Crop of the Future (Celebrating the 85th Birthday of Ullubi K. Kurkiev); and Rye: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (Genetics, Breeding, Diversity, Etc.) – in Memory of Vladimir D. Kobylyansky, Professor Emeritus of VIR. Addressed to a wide range of experts in the field of the work with bioresource collections, including students, postgraduate students and young scientists under the age of 39. Abstracts are published in the authors' original versions. The authors (coauthors) of the published abstracts are responsible for the impartiality and reliability of the data presented.
