AbstractNortherly winds set up by synoptic conditions are persistent in the marine boundary layer (MBL) off the California coast from late spring through summer. Wind, pressure, and MBL height are modulated as the low-level flow impinges on the points and capes along the California coast. The Precision Atmospheric Marine Boundary Layer Experiment was conducted in May and June of 2012 with the primary goal to directly measure the dynamics responsible for the wind field near Point Arguello and Point Conception. Detailed measurements of the horizontal pressure field within the MBL were made using the University of Wyoming King Air research aircraft. Airborne measurements made during cases of strong northerly wind show an abrupt adjustment of the MBL near Point Arguello, including a modulation of the horizontal pressure gradient force and a near collapse of the MBL. Airborne lidar measurements complement measurements of the horizontal pressure field and help to elucidate the large changes in the MBL height in the vicinity of Point Arguello. The Weather Research and Forecasting Model was used to simulate the 20 May 2012 case at a high resolution. Model results showed large-amplitude height perturbations near Point Arguello, similar to those observed from the airborne platform. In this case, the offshore flow played an important role in the local forcing.

Abstract Summertime low-level winds in the marine boundary layer off the California coast are predominantly from the north. This pattern is interrupted periodically by southerly winds and low stratus that can propagate for hundreds of kilometers northward along the coast. These events have been termed coastally trapped disturbances, coastally trapped wind reversals, and southerly surges; their forcing has been the subject of extensive study and debate. Southerly surges remain difficult to forecast, yet have a significant impact on coastal activities. The beginning stage of a southerly surge on 16 June 2012 was explored during the Precision Atmospheric Marine Boundary Layer Experiment. Measurements of the horizontal wind and pressure field in the marine layer offshore from Cape Arguello hours prior to the onset of the surge were made using the University of Wyoming King Air research aircraft. Airborne measurements show that a horizontal pressure field is established with higher pressure to the south just prior to the surge, supporting southerly ageostrophic winds and a south-to-north movement of marine stratus. Aircraft soundings and lidar returns confirm the existence of offshore flow of warm, continental air north of Point Arguello that alters the pressure field adjacent to the coast. The southerly surge originates near Point Arguello and propagates northward past San Francisco during the early morning hours on 17 June 2012. Results from the Weather Research and Forecasting Model are consistent with the King Air observations. Analyses and model output presented here confirm that the large-scale environment is critical to the initiation of these wind reversals.

O presente estudo propõe analisar a cobertura do site noticioso CidadeVerde.com sobre rolezinhos realizados em Teresina-PI, nos meses de março e abril de 2014. Ao todo, seis matérias foram analisadas através da técnica de análise de conteúdo categorial (BARDIN, 2011). Tendo como aporte teórico temas como representação, subjetividade, identidades, segregação e medo, fazemos uso de autores como Moscovici (2010), Arguello (2005), Foucault (2012), entre outros, para explicar como as instituições e a organização social atuam na fabricação de representações e segregação de determinados grupos, excluindo-os de espaços até mesmo simbólicos de pertencimento. Como conclusão, acreditamos que os meios de comunicação, validados por representações naturalizadas no imaginário social, fabricam e reforçam estereótipos que representam, de uma maneira generalista, o medo e a violência.

Se realizo un estudio de corte transversal para estudiar la presencia del síndrome de Burnout en el Hospital Escuela Oscar Danilo Rosales Arguello (HEODRA) de la ciudad de León, Nicaragua, en el año 2007. La población de estudio estuvo constituida por un total de 65 médicos y 100 del personal de enfermería.Se presentaron el doble de casos en el personal de enfermería que en los médicos. La dinámica de trabajo fue el factor mas percibido como desfavorable. La relación antigüedad laboral-casos tuvo comportamiento inverso, entre el personal de enfermería, a mas años labores mas casos, y lo contrario entre los médicos. La mayor parte de casos son jóvenes y se encuentran casados. Los casos predominantes en el personal de enfermería fueron del sexo femenino, en los médicos fue el masculino.Se recomienda buscar la equidad en la distribución de los horarios y trato interpersonal. Promover y mantener en forma permanente sistemas de evaluación del personal, y crear grupos terapéuticos de contención emocional dirigidos a todos el personal de trabajo, con el fin de promover mayor solidaridad, diálogo y respeto por las opiniones de los otros, mejorando los canales de comunicación entre los compañeros de trabajo.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5377/universitas.v2i2.1653

The time-band approximation model for flight operations recovery following disruption (Bard, Yu, Arguello, IIE Transactions, 33, 931–947, 2001) is constructed by partitioning the recovery period into time bands and by approximating the delay costs associated with the possible flight connections. However, for disruptions occurring in a hub-and-spoke network, a large number of possible flight connections are constructed throughout the entire flight schedule, so as to obtain the approximate optimal. In this paper, we show the application of the simplex group cycle approach to hub-and-spoke airlines in China, along with the related weighted threshold necessary for controlling the computation time and the flight disruption scope and depth. Subsequently, we present the weighted time-band approximation model for flight operations recovery, which incorporates the simplex group cycle approach. Simple numerical experiments using actual data from Air China show that the weighted time-band approximation model is feasible, and the results of stochastic experiments using actual data from Sichuan Airlines show that the flight disruption and computation time are controlled by the airline operations control center, which aims to achieve a balance between the flight disruption scope and depth, computation time, and recovery value.

Este artigo consiste na análise, por meio de pesquisa bibliográfica, acerca da dualidade entre civilização e barbárie, através da permeação do Estado penal na contemporaneidade e suas relações com a Declaração Universal dos Direitos humanos, utilizando da ótica do Sistema Prisional Feminino no Brasil. Para essa análise, foram abordados temas referentes ao sexismo, racismo, capitalismo e a restrita ação dos Direitos humanos, preeminentes no status quo social e hierarquizado ao qual o Estado penal mantém. Frente a isso, o surgimento de uma cultura punitiva preconizada pelas instâncias políticas reforça a construção de mais “instituições de sequestro” através de uma manifestação do Estado em manter o poder hierárquico diante da individualidade das detentas, privando-as de seus direitos e fixando essa sujeição à estrutura disciplinar em que predomina a falta de recursos básicos para sua saúde física e psicológica. Assim, o intuito principal do artigo é abrir a discussão sobre a quem são voltados os Direitos humanos e questionar as instituições prisionais através da ideia de abolicionismo penal, utilizando dos estudos em Psicologia Social e autores como Michel Foucault, Katie Arguello, Drauzio Varella e Angela Davis.

La falta de estudios publicados en nuestro país en relación al tema, hace muy importante determinar la prevalencia de Candidiasis Oral, localizaciones más frecuentes y aparición de lesiones según tiempo de diagnóstico de VIH, en Pacientes atendidos en la Clínica de Infectología del Hospital Escuela Oscar Danilo Rosales Arguello de la ciudad de León. Posterior a aprobación por el comité de Ética Médica, UNAN León, se realizó estudio descriptivo de corte transversal, se recolectó información de fuente secundaria, con una muestra de 150 expedientes clínicos de pacientes, los datos de interés incluyeron características socio-demográficas del paciente, presencia, localización y clasificación de Candidiasis Oral. Se encontró prevalencia de candidiasis oral de 50.6%, siendo la presentación clínica más frecuente Candidiasis Pseudomembranosa, en 61.8%; la distribución de la enfermedad fue similar en ambos sexos; de los estudiados con candidiasis oral, el 61.8% presentaron al menos un episodio de enfermedad, siendo mayor en el grupo de 1-5 años de diagnóstico por VIH. La localización más frecuente de las lesiones fue en lengua, seguido de orofaringe. Se concluye que la prevalencia de candidiasis oral para este estudio superó 50%, lo que reafirma lo expresado en la bibliografía como una enfermedad muy frecuente en pacientes con VIH+. Between 1995 and 2013, we surveyed fishes living around 23 California offshore oil and gas platforms (midwaters, bases, and shell mounds) and 70 natural habitats. These platforms were distributed between about Point Arguello, central California, and Huntington Beach, southern California, had seafloor depths between 49 and 363 m, and were surveyed between one and 16 times. A total of 1,526,437 fishes were observed. Fish densities were highest around platform bases, followed by platform midwaters, shell mounds, and natural habitats. Of all fishes observed, 90.4% were in the genus Sebastes. Water depth was the strongest driver of the fish species assemblages, although habitat type and geographic location were also important. Most of the fishes living around platforms and natural habitats were relatively small, primarily ≤20 cm in length. Many of these individuals were the juveniles of larger taxa or the juveniles and adults of dwarf species. Larger fishes were less common and these were most often found around platform bases and on natural habitats. Most young-of-the-year (YOY) fishes occurred at water depths of ≤150 m at all four habitats. At platforms, YOY densities were highest in platform midwaters and bases. On average, densities of these young fishes were somewhat higher compared to natural habitats and it is likely that many, although not all, California platforms play a significant role as nursery grounds for a variety of fishes, particularly for a number of Sebastes species.

AbstractAs part of the Precision Atmospheric Marine Boundary Layer Experiment, the University of Wyoming King Air sampled an atmospheric environment conducive to the formation of a hydraulic jump on 24 May 2012 off the coast of California. Strong, northwesterly flow rounded the Point Arguello–Point Conception complex and encountered the remnants of an eddy circulation in the Santa Barbara Channel. The aircraft flew an east–west vertical sawtooth pattern that captured a sharp thinning of the marine boundary layer and the downstream development of a hydraulic jump. In situ observations show a dramatic rise in isentropes and a coincident sudden decrease in wind speeds. Imagery from the Wyoming Cloud Lidar clearly depicts the jump feature via copolarization and depolarization returns. Estimations of MBL depth are used to calculate the upstream Froude number from hydraulic theory. Simulations using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model produced results in agreement with the observations. The innermost domain uses a 900-m horizontal grid spacing and encompasses the transition from supercritical to subcritical flow south of Point Conception. Upstream Froude number estimations from the model compare well to observations. A strongly divergent wind field, consistent with expansion fan dynamics, is present upwind of the hydraulic jump. The model accurately resolves details of the marine boundary layer collapse into the jump. Results from large-eddy simulations show a large increase in the turbulent kinetic energy field coincident with the hydraulic jump.

Introducción: El desarrollo de estrategias que faciliten el cribado, diagnóstico y abordaje de factores medioambientales durante el embarazo y la lactancia, etapas donde la salud materno-infantil está expuesta de manera activa o pasiva a diferentes agentes; requiere implementar formatos facilitadores de abordaje preventivo. Objetivo: Identificar los factores medioambientales, desde la etapa periconcepcional hasta la infancia, utilizando como herramienta compartida la hoja verde de salud ambiental. Metodología: Estudio observacional, descriptivo de corte transversal. La muestra fue de 204 mujeres gestantes y/o lactantes entre 13-46 años de edad, de municipios de Santander. Se realizó un análisis estadístico descriptivo, de acuerdo a la naturaleza de las variables. Resultados: La edad promedio fue de 25.12 años (DE=5.94). El promedio de semanas gestacionales fue de 36.65 (DE=5.63). Consumo de alcohol preconcepciónal del 48.52% (n=99), donde 91.91% (n=91) consumió cerveza con frecuencia de consumo pregestacional de 4.96 cervezas/mes (DE= 4.58) (n=64). El consumo de cigarro materno en etapas periconcepcionales, fue de 4.90% con promedio de 2.03 cigarros/día (DE=4.35). Conclusiones: Este estudio aporta datos del ámbito local, y traslada una herramienta válida de promoción y prevención en salud medioambiental, por lo que la aplicación de este instrumento permitiría el abordaje integral de la consulta de atención madre-hijo. AbstractMountains along the California coastline play a critical role in the dynamics of marine atmospheric boundary layer (MBL) airflow in the vicinity of the shoreline. Large changes in the MBL topology have been known to occur downwind of points and capes along the western coast of the United States. Large spatial gradients in wind and temperature become established that can cause anomalous electromagnetic wave propagation. Detailed airborne measurements using the University of Wyoming King Air were conducted to study the adjustment of the MBL to the Point Arguello and Point Conception headlands. Pronounced thinning of the MBL consistent with an expansion fan occurred to the south of Point Conception on 13 June 2012. A sharp cloud edge was collocated with the near collapse of the MBL. D-value cross sections derived from differential GPS altitude measurements allow assessment of the vertical profile of the horizontal pressure gradient force and hence thermal wind forcing in response to the near collapse of the MBL. The Weather Research and Forecasting Model was run with a 1-km grid spacing to examine the atmospheric adjustment around Point Conception during this period. Results from the simulations including the vertical cross sections of the horizontal pressure gradient force were consistent with the aircraft observations. Model results suggest that divergence occurs as the flow rounds Point Conception, characteristic of an expansion fan. Wind speeds in the MBL increase coincident with the decrease in MBL thickness, and subsiding flow associated with the near collapse of the MBL is responsible for the sharp cloud edge.

Introducción: La palabra hipertensión sugiere tensión excesiva, nerviosismo, estrés, sin embargo, en medicina, la hipertensión refiere un cuadro de presión arterial elevada independientemente de la causa, esta elevación persistente supera límites normales en PAS ≥ 150 mmHg y PAD ≥ 90 mmHg. Objetivo: Identificar casos de HTA en adultos mayores con sobrepeso y obesidad del Hospital Geriátrico Bolívar Arguello de Riobamba. Metodología: Se trata de un estudio mixto, explicativo, de campo, transversal, comprende una población de adultos mayores que asistieron en el primer semestre del año 2017 de manera ambulatoria al Hospital Geriátrico, la muestra corresponde a 96 pacientes, para el análisis de resultados se usan rangos establecidos por Organización Mundial de la Salud en conjunto con la Sociedad Internacional de Hipertensión Arterial (OMS/ISH) y, para sobrepeso y obesidad los rangos establecidos en la clasificación Internacional de la OMS sobre el estado nutricional de acuerdo al Índice de Masa Corporal (IMC). Resultados: La existencia de HTA es latente y se encuentra en el 42% de pacientes con sobrepeso y el 12% de pacientes con obesidad. Mayoritariamente afectada en mujeres, 6 de cada 10 casos. Conclusiones: Si bien la HTA se refleja como problema de salud en la población de estudio, el problema se agrava, en los pacientes con factores de riesgo asociados a sobrepeso y obesidad, 11% con obesidad grado I, y el 1% con obesidad grado II, entonces, la gravedad de la HTA y los factores puntuales de riesgo son los que, combinados, resultan detonantes en la mortalidad.

This article focuses on two recently discovered documents from Spanish archives in Simancas and Zaragoza, which show a record of the relationship between the painter Michel Sittow (c. 1468-1525/6) and several members of the court of Isabella of Castile between 1492 and 1502. Further, it puts into context several formerly published documents that indicate significant debts were owed to the painter and give us clues about his artworks from 1494, as well as a visit he took to Zaragoza in 1498: one on Michel Sittow’s stay in Castile; an account of Fernando Gomes de Éçija from 1494; a notarial deed from Zaragoza dating from 1498; a list of court salaries, also from 1498; and an alphabetical list of court debts from 1497-1498. Additionally, reconsideration is given to the period Sittow spent at the court of the Spanish king as both an artist and a courtier. Apparently, he had left the court because the full salary he was due was not transferred. Based on the newly discovered documents, the artist may have left in 1502, electing to serve Philip the Fair between 1502 and 1504. It is also now possible to identify 1494 as the year when the painter worked on the Santiago altarpiece in Toledo. Only in 1515 did Sittow return to the Iberian Peninsula to collect the remaining sum, authorized by Charles V’s treasurer, Alonso de Arguello. The required amount was paid to him over the course of a year. Despite several uncertainties regarding his life and artistic practice, Michel Sittow’s career provides a significant insight into royal commissioning practices and the impact of fickle financial administration.

Se presenta una investigación no experimental, descriptiva y de campo con recolección de datos transversales, cuyos objetivos fueron caracterizar la contaminación visual y sónica y aplicar estrategias de divulgación de dichos contaminantes físicos en el paseo ciencias de Maracaibo. Para el desarrollo de este trabajo se consideraron las propuestas de Fuentes y Arguello (2015), Méndez, (2013), Canelones (2007), Guijarro et al., (2015), Alfie y Salinas (2017), Espejo (2014) y Ayala (2017). Se usaron técnicas de observación directa e indirecta con sus respectivos instrumentos previamente elaborados. Para la observación directa se construyó una matriz que permitió identificar las fuentes de contaminación sónica y visual del área y para la observación indirecta se realizó una entrevista con preguntas abiertas. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran que el paseo ciencias por ser una zona comercial dinámica posee abundante contaminación visual y sónica en casi todos los elementos que componen sus fuentes. La música a alto volumen, los electrodomésticos, las sirenas y los autobuses son los contaminantes sónicos más destacados, mientras que los basurales improvisados, vallas publicitarias, los toldos y kioscos fueron los más nombrados como contaminantes visuales. Así mismo se indica que la elevada presencia de estos contaminantes altera los estados anímicos, físicos y las relaciones interpersonales de los ciudadanos que a diario se exponen a ellos y que el daño es proporcional al periodo de exposición. Es por ello que los entes municipales deben intervenir este espacio y buscar soluciones a la problemática en cuestión. El presente estudio demostró que existe una actitud muy pasiva por parte de la muestra para participar en programas que busquen corregir la situación. Finalmente se comprobó que son pocas las estrategias que se pueden aplicar para concientizar a los transeúntes y vendedores de este espacio comercial.

El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el efecto de diferentes mezclas de N-P-K en el crecimiento y desarrollo del híbrido de maíz 19-10 (FENALCE). La investigación se realizó en la Finca “La Granja” vereda Arguello Bajo, Municipio de Yacuanquer (Nariño, Colombia). Se utilizó un diseño de bloques completos al azar, con tres repeticiones y ocho tratamientos correspondientes a dosis de N,P,K, (302 kg.ha-1 de Urea, 483 kg.ha-1 de DAP, 185 kg.ha-1 KCl, y sus combinaciones) y un testigo sin fertilizante. Las variables evaluadas, fueron altura de planta (PH), peso fresco (FW) y seco (DW) de la planta (raíz, tallo, hojas), Phylochromia (FER), diámetro de tallo (SD), número de hojas (NH) y rendimiento de grano (Y). Se presentaron diferencias significativas en las variables, PH, SD, FW, NH; DW de raíz y rendimiento de grano (Y) entre tratamientos. La Phylochromia osciló entre 3,8 y 1,1 días, valores para el testigo y la aplicación de N y K, respectivamente. La Phylochromia, disminuyó cuando se acercó la aparición de la inflorescencia, (masculina y femenina), variando en el tiempo para cada tratamiento, entre 2,6 y 1,1 días, donde el T5 (N, K) tuvo mayores valores al inicio del cultivo y el menor al final de la aparición de la inflorescencia, lo que pudo determinar el rendimiento de los tratamientos. La aplicación de N K, fue significativamente mayor en PH (190,6 cm), SD (7,55 cm), FER y rendimiento (6,99 t ha-1), seguido por la aplicación de la mezcla de N, P y K con 6,28 t ha-1, el menor rendimiento se presentó con el testigo (4,16 t ha-1), seguido de la aplicación de N (4,42 t ha-1); de la misma forma NH osciló entre 11,3 (Testigo) y 16,7 para la aplicación de N, K (T5). La formación fisiológica de la inflorescencia masculina (40 días después de siembra) y femenina (60 días después de siembra), afecto todos los órganos de la planta, lo que se reflejó en la curva de crecimiento y desarrollo de la planta.

Abstract Hematopoietic progenitor kinase 1 (HPK1) has been shown to act as a negative regulator of T cell receptor signaling and of subsequent effector T cell function. Inhibiting HPK1 to enhance T cell activity has emerged as a promising strategy for cancer immunotherapy. Upon T cell receptor engagement, the kinase domain of HPK1 is activated and targets components of the T cell receptor (TCR) signaling pathway for degradation, including SLP76. However, the molecular events connecting HPK1 kinase activity to observed T cell functions downstream of proximal TCR signaling are not well understood. Through transcriptional profiling of HPK1-kinase-dead (HPK1-KD) versus wild-type CD8+ T cells following an acute, attenuated Listeria monocytogenes infection, we observed increased expression of many genes associated with T cell activation and effector function, including changes in expression of several key transcription factors and their targets. Upon activation, HPK1-KD T cells, as well as T cells treated with our small-molecule HPK1 inhibitor, produce higher levels of a wide range of effector cytokines in vitro and in vivo. Treatment of mice with the HPK1 inhibitor also inhibited tumor growth in several syngeneic tumor models. These data expand our understanding of the role of HPK1 in inhibiting CD8+ T cell effector programs, and, importantly, the impact of HPK1 inhibitors on T cell function. Citation Format: Rachel Y. More than 10,000 ha of tomatoes are grown in the field and greenhouses on the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico. Information about the etiology of geminivirus-like diseases affecting tomato crops in all horticultural regions in the area has been difficult to obtain and assess. From 2001 through 2003, stunting, foliar discoloration, reduced leaf size, and leaf crumpling symptoms were observed and analyzed in one large area of tomato plantings in El Carrizal (near the city of La Paz in Baja California Sur). This leaf curl disease resembled that caused by Chino del tomate virus and has been observed at levels of incidence ranging from 60 to 90%. DNA isolated from symptomatic plants was analyzed using DNA hybridizaton and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the 5′ regions of the replication and coat protein genes, including the intergenic region (3). Comparisons of the nucleotide sequence (GenBank Accession No. AY339619) with corresponding sequences in GenBank resulted in 84.2% identity with Tomato mild mottle virus and 61.7% with Tomato severe leaf curl virus; both isolates originate from Central America. The relatively low nucleotide sequence identities from its closest relatives suggested that the virus may be a new begomovirus species of unambiguous American ancestry. In a phylogenetic analysis using PAUP 4.0 software, the Baja California isolate clustered in a separate group from other Mexican sequences. Moreover, the iteron (iterative sequences motifs associated in virus replication) arrangements (1) are unique among known New World begomoviruses, but identical to analogous elements from a tobacco-infecting begomovirus from China. On the other hand, it is well known that there are interactions between geminiviruses in mixed infections in some horticultural areas of Mexico (2). To determine the identity of the putative geminivirus involved in the disease, we used selected restriction enzyme (EcoRI, HindIII and XbaI) analysis and PCR with specific primers. No evidence of mixed infections with other geminiviruses was obtained. DNA fragments of the expected size (1.1 kb) showed different digestion patterns compared with other well-characterized geminiviruses isolated from Mexico such as Chino del tomate virus, Pepper huasteco yellow vein virus, Tomato leaf curl Sinaloa virus, and Pepper golden mosaic virus. Epidemiological, experimental, and natural host range studies indicated that the Baja California isolate has a relatively narrow host range infecting tomatoes, peppers (Capsicum annuum L.), and Peruvian apple (Nicandra physalodes L.). Reproduction of characteristic leaf curling symptoms in tomato seedlings infected with viruliferous whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci Genn.) and inoculated biolistically using infectious DNA (0.5 μg/ml) as inoculum were obtained. Koch's postulates were completed using PCR and DNA hybridization to confirm virus identity. These results confirm that the Baja California isolate is different from other begomoviruses isolated from Mexico. Since 2001, geminivirus-like disease symptoms have been observed in tomato plants on the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico. These diseases have been associated with large populations of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) in commercial fields and have caused dramatic decreases in expected yields. Leaf samples from tomato plants displaying symptoms of stunting and severe upward leaf curling were collected in March 2002 in fields located near the city of La Paz, Baja California Sur (BCS). Total DNA was extracted and tested for the presence of geminiviral DNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with begomovirus-specific degenerate primer pairs PALIv1978/PARIc494 and PALIc1978/PARIv494 (4). PCR products of the expected size (~1.16 and ~1.45 kb) were obtained, cloned into pGEM-T Easy (Promega, Madison, WI), and sequenced. Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the PCR fragments was performed using EcoRI, HindIII, PstI, and XbaI. Restriction fragment patterns were the same for all amplicons and no evidence of mixed infection was obtained. In addition, experimental transmission by whiteflies and inoculations by biolistics consistently induced severe leaf epinasty and stunted growth on tomato seedlings. The complete (2,606 nt) DNA-A sequence of the infecting virus was determined (GenBank Accession No. AY339618) and compared with viral sequences available at GenBank-EMBL databases using BLASTN and the CLUSTAL program (MegAlign, DNASTAR, Madison, WI). The highest nucleotide identity was obtained with the recently described Tomato chino Baja California virus, ToChBCV (90.2%, GenBank Accession No. AY339619), isolated from tomato plantings in El Carrizal, BCS, 100 km from La Paz (3). The second and third best scores were obtained with Tomato severe leaf curl virus from Nicaragua (ToSLCV-NI, 79.6%, GenBank Accession No. AJ508784) and Guatemala (ToSLCV-GT94, 73.8%, GenBank Accession No. AF130415), respectively. Overall, sequence similarity with other New World begomoviruses was rather low (less than 70% identity). Careful analysis of differences between the La Paz isolate and its closest relative, ToChBCV from El Carrizal, revealed that they display different Ori-associated iterons (i.e., replication (Rep)-binding sites) having GGAGTA and GGGTCY core sequences, respectively (1). Moreover, sequence comparisons of the Rep-binding domain (aa 1–120) showed that these domains are only 71% identical. Current taxonomic criteria for begomoviruses establishes that a virus DNA-A sequence identity below 89% with its closest relative is indicative of a separate species (2). Since the La Paz and El Carrizal isolates share 90.2% nt identity, they should be considered strains of a same virus species, recently renamed Tomato chino La Paz virus, ToChLPV (2). Nevertheless, the remarkable differences in their putative replication specificity determinants suggest that ToChLPV and ToChLPV-[BCS] could be incompatible in replication, an interesting issue that should be experimentally addressed. Throughout an enriching 10-week experience with the Acoustical Society of America's Summer Undergraduate Research Experience in Acoustics program (SUREIA), I had the privilege of contributing to the innovative research at Penn State's Arguelles Lab, focusing on ultrasound as a tool for characterizing material properties and defects. Despite my background in communication science, I immersed myself in material science through the lab. I collaborated with graduate students to learn immersion ultrasound testing on bulk ceramic materials and processed data using MATLAB. At the end of the opportunity, I presented my findings at Penn State University and the SURIEA Program Open House. Beyond the academic pursuits, the true richness of this experience lies in the meaningful connections cultivated within my SUREIA cohort and lab members. These connections have not only enhanced my understanding of material science but have also provided me with a network of like-minded individuals whom I can collaborate with in the future. Additionally, the Arguelles Lab has provided me with invaluable mentorship and guidance, enabling me to enhance my research skills and broaden my knowledge in the unfamiliar yet fascinating field of material science.

Both of these productions challenge conventions of recent documentary theatre and introduce fruitful possibilities for how artists may continue to explore the genre.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) targeting PD1 have revolutionized our approach to solid tumors and Hodgkin lymphoma, but they have not been effective in treating Large B Cell Lymphoma (LBCL). In prior work, we used single cell spatial profiling of human tumors to show that exhausted CD8 tumor and TREG populations were associated with PD1 resistance in LBCL (Colombo et al. Blood Adv 2022). Here we show, using a syngeneic model of LBCL, that PD1 resistance is associated with lower CD8+ T-cell basal metabolic rate (BMR) in tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL), and that treatment with the covalent SUMOylation inhibitor (SB-4826) increases the metabolic rate of TIL by metabolic reprograming. Single cell metabolic profiling of human LBCL is on-going and will be presented as well. In summary these studies demonstrate that metabolic dysfunction of T cells in LBCL underlie resistance to PD1 checkpoint inhibitors and that this can be overcome by treatment with SUMOlyation inhibitors. Direct measurement of intra-tumoral metabolic state is difficult to perform on clinical samples, however large tumor size is hypothesized to be a surrogate for increased metabolic derangement. As tumors expand and become more metabolically active themselves, infiltrating immune cells experience decreased O2 tension as well as nutrient deprivation, ultimately leading to decreased anti-tumor immune responses. In support of this idea, it has been observed that high metabolic tumor volume at baseline predicts survival in LBCL patients, independent of their initial response to therapy. We have shown that mice with established (>125mm 3) A20 tumors are resistant to anti-PD1 therapy. However, A20 bearing mice treated ~5 days post implantation are responsive to anti-PD1 therapy. To understand these findings, we examined sensitive (small) and resistant (large) A20 tumors by flow cytometry analysis and found that resistant tumors had lower relative numbers of T cells, lower absolute numbers of CD8+ T cells, increased absolute numbers of TREG and a strikingly decreased CD8/TREG ratio. Additionally, the resistant tumors had increased absolute numbers of pre-exhausted and exhausted CD8+ T cells as well as decreased BMR. Small ubiquitin-like modifiers (SUMO) proteins regulate a variety of cellular processes in tumor and immune cells and inhibitors of SUMOylation have shown anti-tumor activity in a variety of preclinical tumor models with potential synergy with checkpoint inhibitors targeting PD-1 (Cannon et al. Cancer Res, 2023). We demonstrate that a dose of 100mg/kg of SB-4826 led to a complete response in all mice treated (Fig. 1A) and we also show that this effect is dependent on CD8+ T-cells and elicits a long term memory response, with 0 of 15 mice in remission developing tumor upon rechallenge. A low dose (25mg/kg) of SB-4826 failed to elicit a response in any of the mice treated while anti-PD1 therapy elicited a response in 1/6 mice (Fig. 1A). Combination of 25mg/kg SB-4826 with anti-PD1 therapy demonstrated synergism with a response in 3/6 mice (Fig. 1A). We also demonstrate that global SUMOylation levels are higher in PD1+ TIM3+ CD8+ TILs compared to PD1- TIM3- CD8+ T-cells, suggesting that SUMOylation may be acting as a negative regulator of T-cell function. Using SCENITH (Arguello et al. Cell Metabolism 2020) for single cell metabolic studies, we demonstrate that SB-4826 increases the BMR (Fig. 1B), mitochondrial dependency and proliferative capacity of tumor infiltrating PD1+ TIM3+ CD8+ T-cells (TILs). While both SB-4826 and PD1 inhibition led to increased CD8+ TIL numbers, SB-4826 led to increased BMR in CD8+ TILs while PD1 inhibition did not affect CD8+ TILs BMR. Additionally, PD1 inhibition significantly decreased CD8+ TILs mitochondrial dependency for metabolism, while SB-4826 increased mitochondrial dependency (Fig. 1B). Additionally, we recapitulate these metabolic enhancements in an in vitro system of T-cell activation, further confirming a T-cell intrinsic effect following SB-4826. Mechanistically, we found that SB-4826 led to increased HIF-1a levels in both CD4+ and CD8+ cells following TCR activation, likely through stabilization of HIF-1a due to decreased SUMOylation-dependent turnover (Cheng J et al. Cell 2007). We hypothesize that metabolic reprograming of CD8 T-cells through increased HIF-1a is the basis for synergy between SUMOylation inhibition and immune checkpoint inhibitors in LBCL.

Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar o conto africano A Dona do Fogo e da Água, uma obra literária do autor Celso Sisto (2012) e ilustrações de Rubem Filho, como elemento oriundo da cultura africana. A pesquisa realizada foi bibliográfica fundamentada nas dimensões estéticas que analisa os elementos ilustrativos e o texto narrativo, sob o aspecto étnico-cultural do Continente africano, utilizando-se das estratégias de leitura preconizadas por Celso Sisto (2012), Ana Aparecida Arguelho de Souza (2010) e José Auri Cunha (2005). A pesquisa participante foi desenvolvida com uma atividade interativa de mediação de leitura numa classe de alfabetização no município de Volta Redonda. Destacamos a importância da interação dialógica entre os sujeitos participantes perante a relevância cultural, predominantemente enraizada na origem da civilização brasileira, tal como, a tradição dos contos populares e a preservação da memória folclórica pelos contadores de história, transmitida de geração a outra, além de apresentar as belezas e riquezas do misticismo por meio de imagens ilustrativas, que por meio do imagético e da narrativa textual, tem a finalidade de expressar durante a prática dialógica, o pensamento reflexivo das dimensões estéticas do conto africano para compreender o contexto histórico e étnico-cultural africano e afro-brasileiro, valorizando-o como produtor de cultura.

Characterized by ambiguous sexual energy and resistance to male domination and objectification, the visual idiom of punk rock communicated feminist prospects through the performance of fashion. This essay interprets the creative agency of Alice Bag, Marina “Del Rey” Muhlfriedel, Trudie “Plunger” Arguelles-Barret, and Helen “Hellin Killer” Roessler as Latina and Hispanic sono-spatial artists in the early days of L.A.’s punk subculture. Situating the performance practices of Hispana (Iberian) women alongside the Latina (hemispheric Latin American) artists, L.A. punk is situated within a Spanish-American borderlands matrix of meaning, where non–Western European roots of women in punk gain coherence as a specifically bordered set of historical circumstances. By embodying musical performativity as creators of a relational theatre of musical experience, the study asserts that women punk fans redefined how alternative music was generated, circulated, and consumed.

En este trabajo abordamos la trayectoria eclesiástica de Llanes y Arguelles, deteniéndonos, sobre todo, en el periodo de su pontificado como arzobispo de Sevilla. El trabajo está dividido en tres partes. Comenzamos abordando su origen familiar, formación y su etapa como obispo de Segovia. A continuación, presentamos el transcurso de los dos sexenios como arzobispo hispalense (1783-1789 y 1789-1795). Luego, dedicamos un apartado a las empresas artísticas de Llanes y Argüelles como arzobispo de Sevilla. Finalmente, añadimos un apéndice documental. Este estudio, además de arrojar luz sobre su pontificado, es una reflexión que manifiesta el ideal de una verdadera reforma eclesial, en el contexto de unas perspectivas históricas de cambio como las que se sucedieron durante la Ilustración española, teniendo como referencia la condición de obispo Pastor que da la vida por sus ovejas, como refleja la trayectoria eclesiástica de Llanes y Argüelles.

The current debate on the competitive risks of common ownership has focused on whether passive index investments soften competition among portfolio companies. However, even if one concedes, in arguendo, that this is the case, it remains unclear in what way this bears on the analysis of horizontal mergers between portfolio companies. The EU Commission in Dow/DuPont and Bayer/Monsanto has alleged that common ownership is ‘an element of context in the appreciation of any significant impediment to effective competition’. In that respect we hypothesize that it should not be presumed that common ownership in itself increases anticompetitive effects of a merger between portfolio companies. Instead we posit that this depends on the facts of the case. The existence of common ownership might even mitigate post-merger unilateral effects if compared to the pre-merger counterfactual. We test our hypothesis on price competition as well as on innovation competition. Eventually, we map our conclusions onto the legal principles governing the burden of proof in merger cases.

According to the 2000 census, over 12 million Asian Americans, almost 70 percent of them either immigrants who came to the U.S. after 1970 or their children, comprised an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse population that was more regionally dispersed throughout the U.S. than ever before. (Lai and Arguelles, 2003). Despite these transitions and increasing heterogeneity, discourses about Asian American communities have focused on ethnic enclaves such as Chinatowns, Koreatowns, and Little Saigons where coethnic residents, businesses, services, institutions and organizations exist and interact in urban or suburban physical spaces of the bicoastal United States (Fong, 1994; Li, 1999; Zhou and Bankston, 1988). According to Kathleen Wong (Lau), these tangible markers tied to space are often privileged as authentic Asian American communities while those without demographic concentrations and geographically bound enclaves are “less advanced” communities; as a result, “[w]hat is not recognized in the literature is the ‘localness' of this production.’ [1997:83].

El contexto organizacional actual caracterizado por el crecimiento del consumo, las exigencias del mercado y la escasez de recursos, condiciona los esfuerzos de los sistemas de producción y servicios por ofrecer al cliente el producto que necesita, en el momento, cantidad y calidad requeridos con un costo mínimo. Es por eso por lo que el logro de una gestión eficaz dirigida a la satisfacción del cliente surge como una prioridad como salida esperada de cualquier organización. Junto con esta necesidad, existen deficiencias metodológicas que dificultan la mejora de la satisfacción del cliente en las entidades productivas. En este sentido, el objetivo fue desarrollar un procedimiento para medir y mejorar la satisfacción del cliente industrial en las entidades manufactureras. La aplicación del procedimiento en la industria del calzado “Jesús Arguelles Hidalgo” contribuyó a la validación del procedimiento y proporcionó estrategias de mejora para la eliminación de las causas raíz que provocan la insatisfacción de los clientes de la entidad. El cumplimiento del objetivo fue garantizado mediante el uso de métodos y técnicas tales como: histórico lógico, árbol de la realidad y encuesta.

This essay attempts to construct and deconstruct the discourses of “nation” (bayan) and “region” (rehiyon) vis-à-vis “aswang” and “tama(w)o” embedded in the films of Negrense filmmaker Richard Somes – “Lihim ng San Joaquin” from Shake, Rattle, and Roll 2k5 (Monteverde, Monteverde, & Somes, 2005), Yanggaw (Arguelles, Montelibano, Montelibano, & Somes, 2008), “Tamawo” from Shake, Rattle, and Roll 13 (Monteverde, Monteverde, & Somes, 2011), and Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang (Calmerin, Kintanar, Samson-Martinez, & Somes, 2012). Using the horror genre, the four films present the quotidian lives from the nation’s peripheries through the depiction of the antagonized “indigenous belief systems,” imagined backward-ness of the bucolic landscape, and oppressive hacienda systems. These spatio-temporal dispositifs are deemed to result in the contested processes of the dichotomy and vicissitudes between rural and urban, margin and center, Self and Other, and nation and region. Finally, by considering Somes’s films as “filmic folklore,” the essay tries to configure and reconfigure the folk creatures “aswang” and “tama(w)o” as cornucopia and articulations of regional and national “history of emotions.”

The Arab League should evaluate whether the motivation of national security is a reasonable excuse to restrict free trade with Israel in 2018 and furthermore – assuming arguendo a good faith bona fide threat exists – whether the boycott even constitutes an effective tool to advance national security. Israel and Arab countries have their legal arguments that they can use to justify the Arab League boycott or to invalidate it. The use of the national security exception in international economic law must be evaluated on the bottom-line question of effectiveness. The boycott has proven ineffective and is now increasingly counter-productive due to transformative regional and global developments. Free trade and efficient markets combined with the ability of talented individuals to work without discrimination and restriction are the hallmarks of vibrant economies and stability – true national security. While the establishment of the boycott–over seventy years ago – may at one time have served a perceived national security goal, there is no longer such a need. Continuing the boycott undermines the WTO’s commitment to free trade and prosperity which ultimately harms all parties and their national security and harms the greater global interest in international stability for all parties.

Since inception of the new-generation experiment in legal education with the National Law School of India University Bangalore (NLSIU), contemporary history of professional education rolls on toward excellence and the ordeal is on with the proliferation of similar institutional entrepreneurship. In the anxiety of competitive edge, few—too few—follow legacy of a model school in Bangalore; invented by N.R. Madhava Menon: the legacy vis-a-vis experiments with discipline, leadership, pedagogy, and the like. Minute prospect and consequence of (t)his model apart, Menon redefined the philosophy of professional education at NLSIU. What went spread over far and wide as trendsetter for the contemporary legal education is the letters of institutionalism, more so for ‘National’. Spirit of the NLSIU legacy but lies elsewhere. A practising lawyer-turned-educator, Madhava Menon has introduced a model to prepare well-baked product for the bench and the bar alike. At the same time, however, he brought in sense of social responsibility otherwise getting dwindled in the contemporary professional lifeworld. Not without reason that there is emphasis upon clinical legal education and legal aid clinic alike. In its essence, the author advances arguendo with the reasoning of his own, that pedagogy thereby initiated has had a teleological end to offer legal education en route to justice education; thereby spearhead progressive social transformation. The Menon Model is meant to raise human resource for professional service to the court and the people; instead of tertiary service to the market. After his model, the market ought to approach qualified professionals; not vice versa. The sooner such internal legacy of the (Menon) model earns appreciation is the better for prospect of professional education.

El objetivo fue diseñar propuestas de mejora para un servicio de mantenimiento y reparación de vehículos que posee la concesión de una marca internacional de automóviles. La metodología consideró principalmente los aportes del modelo chileno de gestión de excelencia, una norma para el tratamiento de los reclamos, una metodología de diagnóstico de gestión, las dimensiones del modelo Servperf y la técnica de análisis de factores. Los principales resultados permitieron conocer el nivel de calidad del servicio, identificación de una dimensión de calidad subyacente, catorce prácticas de gestión y el diseño de un mecanismo de control y seguimiento fundamentado en la teoría del cuadro de mando integral. Las principales conclusiones indican que integrando los aportes de la literatura de gestión de calidad se pueden diseñar propuestas de mejora en los ámbitos estratégico, personal, análisis de datos, métodos y tecnología.

This paper presents a sociological study of the features that characterize students’ perception of the phenomenon of polyglottery. The study aims to give a clearer description of the qualities, which are, according to students, associated with polyglots. The researchers used the focus group method and projective techniques (free and controlled associations, personalization, personification and object manipulation) in a discussion with actual MGIMO students to provide ground for a sincere, but instrumental talk. As a result, special characteristics were identified that are associated with polyglots in the minds of the students. It was revealed that polyglots are perceived in an exclusively positive light as educated, competent and tactful individuals who are an attractive role model. These associations are largely formed under the influence of the phenomenon of “unconscious polyglottery” due to the fact that multilingual competence is part of everyday life for this social group. MGIMO students have an unconscious habit of perceiving foreign languages not only during the classes but also in a less formal way and, therefore, are uniquely related to polyglottery. MGIMO was chosen as the object of study because of it being mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records as an academic institution with the largest number of languages in the world being taught (53). In addition, a review of existing literature aimed at the sociological study of polyglottery is also presented in the article (in particular, the works by Laia Herlevi and Alexander Arguelles). Analyzed are their goals, results and limitations. These works use a quantitative methodology of sociological research, while the present paper refers to a qualitative strategy, which seems to be particularly effective in examining the phenomenon of polyglots and polyglottery. The immediate perspective of this study is connected with describing sociological and psychological aspects of different foreign languages when selecting one as a study subject.

While the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”) has been law for over 30 years, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has yet to adopt a definitive standard for how plaintiffs win damages under Title II of that law. Further, while the Rehabilitation Act (“RA”) has been law for almost 50 years, the Fifth Circuit has failed to announce any specific standard for how plaintiffs obtain damages under that law as well. I previously wrote an article in the pages of this journal that sought to “clarify” the Fifth Circuit’s jurisprudence on the issue. In Fifth Indifference: Clarifying the Fifth Circuit’s Intent Standard for Damages Under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, 7 Tex. A&M L. Rev. Arguendo 1 (2019), I argued (1) that the Fifth Circuit should adopt the “deliberate indifference” standard and (2) that no Fifth Circuit precedent should be read as explicitly forbidding the adoption of that standard. My paper has seen great success in its downloads and its recent citation in a brief to the Fifth Circuit. However, the Fifth Circuit has still failed to adopt any specific standard and continues to use phrases like “seem to have required” and “something more than deliberate indifference.” Fortunately, what the Fifth Circuit has said and what it has done have been two different things. In reality, the Fifth Circuit has been using nothing more, less, or different than a standard deliberate indifference analysis. Thus, the “seem to have required more than deliberate indifference” standard is a mere charade. This charade should now be abandoned, and the Fifth Circuit should explicitly adopt the deliberate indifference standard. That standard being (1) a defendant knew of facts that presented a substantial risk of harm to an ADA or RA right and (2) the actor or entity failed to act appropriately on that risk. To make this argument, this Article is divided as follows. Part I discusses the historical and doctrinal background of the ADA and the RA. Part II discusses how other circuits have addressed the issue of damages actions under Title II of the ADA and the RA. Part III discusses the Fifth Circuit’s relevant jurisprudence. Part IV then explains why the Fifth Circuit should explicitly adopt deliberate indifference. Finally, Part V briefly argues why lower courts and any individual panels of the Fifth Circuit could ignore the “something more than deliberate indifference” standard and explicitly adopt ordinary “deliberate indifference.”
