This project represents the search for an architecture within the physical, historical, and political situation that an existing city presents. Set within the physical bounds of Savannah, it builds upon an understanding of the city as a series of Utopian propositions existing subliminally and often incongruously. As such, the project concerns the making of public space--space to relieve the culturally disjointed condition of modern urban life by acting as a sort of stage for creative expression and collective improvisation. This also involves the making of characteristic places, which by energetically acknowledging, confronting, challenging, or amplifying the cityâ s conceptions of itself, have the potential to generate both physical and metaphysical transformations. Furthermore, in response to urban development paradigms that are either senselessly uncoordinated or mechanistically authoritarian, the project proposes an alternative: the structured interweaving of a â civic layerâ of these generative urban centers, each serving a different part of the city. The centers must function architecturally as the symbols and containers of civic life, providing space and programmatic flexibility to allow for open cultural engagement while aesthetically enlivening the urban fabric and serving collectively as an index to the city at large.

The process of the architect involves the contradictory yet coexisting realms of form and order, the soul and the intellect, the nondiscursive and the literal. Meaning can be found in both worlds. The rational and linguistic manifests itself in the architectural; architecture, however, expresses ideas as art and reveals that which is verbally ineffable.

Higher education and online discussions are an integral part of collaboratively based e-Learning systems. However, there problems can be associated with current online discussion models. For example, it can be easy to set open-ended discussions which attract little participation and to assess contributions can be difficult or time-consuming. Students may not achieve the expected learning outcomes without proper structure and management in online discussions. This paper proposes to design and implement a discussion forum object to function within the architectural constraints of an existing Oss learning management system (to meet target user requirements) that is a web-based environment for online discussions where the facilitator can structure each discussion according to its nature and where learning requirements are using already designed templates.

This research began with an exploration of the phenomenon of cultural conflict and fusion in the process of architectural modernization in Taiwan. It will examine the impact of modern and contemporary theories on the practice of architecture of the island. It will then seek out the essence of Chinese classical architecture in order to develop an approach for the development of the future Chinese/Taiwanese architecture. In addition, the findings of the study could serve as a reference for scholars who would pursue historical and theoretical studies of in the subject, or for architects who are seeking design concepts to enhance their projects. The study utilizes an interpretive-historical methodology. It emphasizes that researchers should investigate social phenomena within broader and more complex contexts of what to uncover the underlying cultural factors. To highlight their significance, the author will pursue a hypothetic project to examine and demonstrate the meaningfulness and applicability of the concepts learned from the research. Efforts were made to discover ways in which Taiwanese and Chinese architectural culture can deal with foreign influences, such that it will be able to enjoy the benefits of modernization while maintaining its unique character and identity. Moreover, it will attempt to uncover ways in which Chinese architecture can in fact influence the global contemporary architectural culture. Finally, it is hoped that this work will produce a useful reference for students, scholars and architects who wish to develop design projects that reflect and celebrate regional cultures.

Inspired by Buddhist philosophy, the photographic series Architectural Zen attempts to beautify banal and pragmatic architecture through limiting and preexisting artificial light conditions. The selective illumination of artificial light eliminates the non-essential details and enhances the pure forms and saturated color presented by the camera lens. This encourages the photographer and the viewer to enter a state of meditation. The resulting process is similar to a Zen approach to image making. The ancient Zen artist s compositions are strengthened by a meditation on form and subsequent elimination of the non-essential elements of the subject. Through embracing this Zen mentality and mindfulness, aspects of Eastern aesthetic and balance also appear through the work. The warm glow of artificial lights, long recessed shadows, and surreal colors contribute to the feeling of rest, contemplation, isolation, and solitude. Although the work in Architectural Zen is not directly about Buddhist doctrines, the process of creating the art parallels the ideas and practices of Zen Buddhism and meditation, finding the Buddha nature of typically unappealing architectural forms during a different time of day.

With the growing role of cities, rapid urbanization, transformation under shifting economic, environmental, social and demographic conditions, the purpose of architecture is changing too. The legacy of the modernist decades left a broken urban fabric of isolated buildings from the urban landscapes of streets, plots, and blocks. In its aftermath, professionals sought to revive the traditional city fabric starting from the block, as the basic element. Although recent developments produce blocks, the livability of streets and other public spaces remains questionable. With a newfound focus into the block, as the fundamental structural element in planning, architectural typologies become the starting point to translate the qualities of urban life. The relationship between two scales, the urban and the architectural, will be examined in this thesis. Architectural elements and typologies have the ability to enhance public life, fostering positive social relations through meaningful design. The following research will explore architecture in Stockholm from the scale of an urban block, to the building typologies, and finally to the modest details within a single building. The fundamental idea is to extract building types and architectural elements that have an impact on the daily life of individuals in the city of Stockholm.

"Thesis presented June 1998, amended February 2000." Includes bibliography. V. I: text -- v. IIa: Figures -- v. IIb: Figures. This thesis demonstrates the falsity of the assumptions that ancient architects followed innate spatial cues or responses in their designs, that ancient people experienced the resulting buildings through the same responses, and that modern scholars can thus reconstruct both the intentions of the ancient architects and the architectural effects experienced by ancient visitors to ancient buildings throught the medium of their own spatial reactions. This underlying belief is contestable given its basis in unproven and untested late nineteenth century theories of perception. The thesis also demonstrates that the assumption made by modern scholars that the architects of the Forum of Pompeii were primarily concerned with uniformly enclosed space, axial symmetry, and orthogonality, is wrong, and is contradicted by the actual form of the buildings around the Forum.

This thesis begins with an enquiry into the way the house is the physical expression of interacting cultural factors. Despite views emphasizing the determinant influence of culture on the house form, an investigation of the literature on architectural sociology reveals that, in the contemporary development of the built environment, the relationship between house form and human behaviour and/or activities, as manifestation of the users’ cultural needs, was treated as secondary. This study provides a conceptual framework based on cross-cultural studies and architectural sociology to understand how first generation Italian migrants in Brisbane have influenced the form of a specific typology of dwelling, the archetypal ‘house on a quarter-acre block’, in the post WWII period, in response to cultural needs. Qualitative data collected from the testimonies of Italian migrants in conjunction with evidence left from four houses, were analysed to answer the research question: in what ways did Italian migrants influence the form of their houses built in Brisbane in the post WWII period, and what were the forces behind, and outcomes of, this influence? The findings revealed that the architectural form of the house is influenced by the need to continue architectural traditions. The spatial form of Italian houses was influenced by sociocultural factors and urbanization patterns. These are the lack of public urban spaces like a town square traditionally utilized by Italian migrants in their native built environment for performing social activities. This insight means that migration to another land represents a fundamental disruption of social activities and, in this regard, the spatial form of the house could be conceptualised as a means of re-establishing and enhancing social interactions.

The synthesis of forms is an interesting problem which has faced designers for years. So far, the only solution to this problem is to use the imagination of designers. Even though computers have been used in representing designs, they play only a very passive role in the process of design. Computers are regarded as non-creative and lacking imagination. However, with the theory of Shape Grammar, a rule system that can be used to generate a large number of varied ~nd complex designs using only a small number of simple rules, computers can now have imagination. The problem is addressed here mainly in the domain of architecture. By formulating Shape Grammar in the framework of Iterated Function System (IFS) theory, various architectural massing designs, most of which could not be imagined by even the best architects, can be created by applying grammars to simple geometric forms recursively. The software package developed here uses Java, Open Inventor and cutting-edge 3D graphics technology. Architects will be able to work in a virtual 3D environment, generating designs with the aid of a creative computer.

The architectural practice of Giuseppe Terragni (1904-1943) takes place during the twentieth century modern social movements, as architecture and urban form follow a major shift in the political conditions, in Italy and beyond. This dissertation is a demonstration of the quest for the rational in the architectural practice of Giuseppe Terragni. Furthermore, it sorts out the role of Terragni's practice in the dichotomous relationships between city and architecture as well as state and project. Initially, it is the obligation of this dissertation to address questions of principles, in order to build a plenum for the relationship between the city and architecture. It traces movements through translation and transformation of architectural impression, in form and type, and its meta in concinnity, in terms of legacy, legitimacy, and the rational in idea. THESIS. The implicit rational in architecture exists in hierarchical order that allows for it to form unity of the whole that any of its constituents cannot form individually. It should be the architect's duty to fully reconcile all the elements in action – for and against form – in architecture, and demonstrate that the resultant is not a mere compromise but a necessary optimal condition. Therefore, I start with a stance in which I attempt to show how Giuseppe Terragni, in his ratiocinium, explicates the implicit rational in architecture, against the sea of protean political conditions. Giuseppe Terragni can be understood in his convictions which we may be able to sort out through his words, works, and deeds. In his pursuit of the rational Giuseppe Terragni offers a clue to the time and actions taking place, as if he were to remind us of the Homeric song about the deeds of men with convictions under their destiny and their ironic tragicomedy. Terragni's Danteum is the one instance where destiny seems closer to fulfillment. Dante Alighieri's dream of the glorious empire seems to materialize in the signs of the monarchy and its savior – Mussolini. Since the fascist movement concerns itself with questions of legitimacy that in lineage shifts between histories of origins and middles, the shifting in language plays an important role in the sorting out of factum and verum. Languages that enter into this play shift laterally mainly between Greek, Latin, and Italian. And, at times Dardanian and Proto-Albanian, both Illyrian dialects, enter the play. METHOD. Many aspects of this inquiry demand specific research methods as shown through the general and specific instances of man's activity as work which results in that which is made (factum) and the pursuit of that which is true (verum). Therefore, method in the sense of search for the way concerning purpose in what is made is conducted through istoria and historiography. Meanwhile, the search for truth, as it does not concern itself with the same scope as factum, requires philosophy as means towards knowledge, to sort out questions regarding truth. This dissertation follows certain Italian philosophers as guides in the pursuit. Not the least among them is Giambattista Vico who proposes that universal laws of development of men and society can be traced through the union between verum and factum. So, verum and factum become characters of the same play. Philology, love for reason, as a subspecies of philosophy, is a means toward knowledge in unraveling of the layers of the rational in the making. Additionally, in this inquiry, I employ analogies, diagrams, ideograms, and images, which demonstrate the quest for the rational in the architectural practice of Giuseppe Terragni.

What does historic preservation mean in a historic downtown with a long-standing immigrant population? With 90% of the business owners in the historic downtown identifying as Latino, Woodburn, Oregon presents the convergence of historic preservation advocates and Latino business owners. Some stakeholders view historic preservation as maintenance to preserve what exists, while some view preservation as restoring a building to its build date aesthetics. This thesis addresses what the field of preservation and the stakeholders in Woodburn value and how that causes conflicts when dealing with preservation efforts. The main method employed for study in this thesis was collection of qualitative data through interviewing historic preservation advocates, city officials, and Latino business representatives. By understanding Woodburn as an example of a “new” vernacular form, the analysis explores how the community of Woodburn can negotiate its regional dynamics to create a local distinctiveness, which includes a many-layered historical narrative.

Over the last few decades, studies on provincial fora defined some of their characteristics. A global approach of their decor can bring about a better understanding of these spaces. The link between the images and their contexts will be examined. The study of the images will be associated with the study of non iconographical elements of the decor in order to define the main themes represented on the fora. The definition of several contexts will help to understand how the decor was conceived and seen at the time

Computers have irrupted in the domain of architectural design, still with uncertain results. The impetus are driven by two major forces: First, the momentum originated by extensive application of computational tools to any imaginable human activity, not necessarily related to design. Second, the experience derived mainly from engineering fields, which has by-produced systems intended for computer-aided architectural design. Yet, architects complain. The magic is missing. The goals, mystified. Computerized design tools are product-oriented, not process-oriented. In Architecture, the how's are as significant as the what's. This thesis presents a computational environment for architectural design. The environment aims to overcome some critical limitations of current CAD systems. Architectural design is neither drafting, nor simulation, nor modelling. Architectural design is a process of progressive consciousness acquisition. The proposed envirorunent helps architects communicate better with their design objects. It is an environment where design worlds can be expressed and explored, where architects can manifest their preferences to approach each design problem, what instruments are to be used and how they are to be manipulated. It is intended to be a tool to design better, not directly a tool to produce better designs.

Geometry. Pure Form. What are the limits of these concepts in architecture? To what extent can they be realized through constructive means? To the architect, these concepts are often the originating forces driving their work, but their nature is intangible, and can be best understood through reason. There exists then, a dichotomy that the architect is left to resolve: that which is solely of an intelligible nature and that which can exist within the physical limitations of our reality. While architectonic limitations are that of the physical, Architecture itself exists within both of these realms, the duality of the mind and of the body, and it is the charge of the architect to reconcile their inherent contradictions. The limitations of the mind and the body are incompatible at an absolute level, but there exists a degree of overlap within which architecture is found. Place is a catalyst that can trigger this dissonance. The intelligible exists in a placeless space, a space that was given a framework by René Descartes in his notion of extension, and exists as a free body. In contrast, the architectonic is contingent on placement and the forces of gravity. They are simultaneously contradictory and co-related. This thesis pursues the limits of this contradiction; its culmination more akin to an architectural follie than the original intent: a modest hiking shelter.

This thesis explores the duality and contradictions that arise when the realm of reason and the realm of that which is built coincide. The framework through which this exploration takes place is in the conception and design of a small structure in the mountains of Ticino, an Italian canton of southern Switzerland. It is a building whose purpose is pleasure, nothing more. The pursuit of ideal form in place is a catalyst for the series of contradictions that exist within not only this thesis, but the realm of architecture. Place and space. Mind and body. Intelligible and sensible.

This thesis investigates the concept of the symbolic form of architecture. It first focuses on the philosophical foundations for this concept in the works of Ernst Cassirer, Immanuel Kant, Conrad Fiedler, and Theodor Adorno. Then, the development of the modern perception of form in architectural theoreticians, where "modern" architectural theory evolved from an analogical state into a symbolic state, is examined: Karl Bötticherâ s concept of a Junktur and his attempt to transcend the presumed dichotomy in architecture between ornamentation and form is discussed; Gottfried Semper's concept of style and Alois Riegl's concept of motif are presented as reactions against what they saw as the mechanistic reliance on structure as definitive of form in architecture; Louis Sullivan's ornamentation is discussed as an attempt to integrate structure and ornamentation into a morphological whole; Otto Wagner's attempt to purge architecture from analogical responses through a strictly constructional basis for ornamentation is presented; and Adolf Loos' dismissal of decorative ornamentation, since it is an impediment towards true aesthetic judgment, is examined. Finally, a critical review of the symbolist movement in architecture, art, and literature is presented as a movement diametric to the symbolic development in architecture, since it glorified the analogical, and frequently the mimetic. The origins for how the symbolist movement became a denial of clarity center on Emanuel Swedenborg's concept of symbols, and how it was misinterpreted by the symbolists.

Architecture is changing because the world is changing. The impact of environmental issues on the way of thinking architecture, and also on architectural ideas and architectural forms, is the subject of this research. The building sector is now considered as an important tool in order to solve the environmental crisis. However, discrepancies are increasing between, on the one hand, urgent and regulatory requirements to achieve specific quantitative targets and, on the other, the need for architecture to be thought of in connection with a new environmental culture.Energy transition. Environmental transition. Architectural transition? How to define this neomorphisation process. This research concerns the transition period that started in the late 1990s and where the scenarios are projected up to the 2050s. The objective is to define concepts and tools, to characterize the architectural transition towards an environmental architecture, in an open and multidisciplinary manner, and to provide food for thought. The concepts of “architectural neomorphism” and “Neomorphic Potential” (PN) are created, in response to the context of a transition in progress. By analogy with the neologism which designates a new word that renews and enriches language, architectural neomorphism indicates a new form. In the same way, it results from a morphological process, creative, experimental, rich and complex, specific to transition periods. The resulting “Neomorphic Potentials” of environmental architecture describe the ideas which are behind the new architectural forms. The specific quality of this research work is based on an original approach to architectural thought, from ideas to forms and from forms to ideas, and on the creation of “analogical spaces”. They are composed as a result of the confrontation of three corpora : a corpus of ideas (PN), a corpus of manifest architectural forms and a corpus of subversive artistic forms. They are designed to active debate, to question the concept of accuracy and to stimulate our thinking about architecture, to escape standard ways of thinking and to promote outside-the-box thinking. These theoretical elements are reinvested in making a model of a thesaurus. The "Thesaurus of environmental architecture, from ideas to forms and from forms to ideas" is both a monitoring tool and a resource centre. It gives the opportunity to discover, to take on board and to think environmental architecture through a new descriptive framework using analogical spaces. Offered on the principle of an online collaborative tool, it calls for a multicultural approach to architecture so that knowledge can be shared in a lively, interactive way.The model of the Thesaurus of environmental architecture opens up the way for new teaching methods directed towards the identification of new references. Its ambition is to contribute to a contemporary history of ideas and forms of environmental architecture

The art of painting opens vast expressive possibilities for architecture, wherein architecture can produce a more conducive atmosphere for the contemplation of painting. The subtle affinities between the two fields stirred me to explore the individualistic expressiveness of the sensory realm in a painting and how it can inspire an architect. My thesis starts from an interest in a painting of Kandinsky's. The painting "Yellow, Red, Blue" stirred my curiosity in the potency of its beauty and made me ask questions in regards to what I can capture, learn and express architecturally. The aim is to design a Contemporary Art Center to be situated within the fabric of Virginia Tech campus. Throughout the various stages of design, the finality of the project resulted from dealing with the various inputs from: Kandinsky's painting as a catalyst and inspirer to the design, to the contextual issues and ways of urban integration and also dealing with the nature of the project's function and programmatic needs.

This thesis is an inquiry into the position of architecture both as a cultural product and as an autonomous discipline. The purpose to search for architectural autonomy is to discover architecture&rsquo
s internal values that can make architects become more aware of their tools and potentials. That kind of research is to discover the boundaries of the discipline of architecture, which interrelates with many other disciplines. In order to explore architectural autonomy, this thesis explores the internal qualities of architecture with relation to the external ones. The scrutiny of these internal qualities is to direct architecture through its own realm and to discover its significant values and internal potentials. Architectural autonomy is explored in this thesis in the framework of Modern Movement. The technological inventions and the social and cultural developments are considered as influential forces in the discipline and practice of architecture. This study attempts to identify the concept autonomy, not as a property indicating to an architecture that is completely independent from its cultural environment, but as a value implying to architecture&rsquo
s interior qualities that are significant in the discipline&rsquo
s boundaries. Architecture is examined with relation to its cultural circumstances
by arguing that architecture is not only a part of culture but also one of the constituents of it. Besides fulfilling cultural values, architecture has the ability to transform culture, with its own internal values. In this regard, the issue of autonomy gains importance in maintaining architecture a cultural value.

Traditional architectural and urban artefacts are showed over the centuries as a powerful imprint of human actions and practices and are being developed on the basis of concrete socio-cultural factors and environmental rationalities. Spatial and morphological patterns of traditional environments have exceedingly evolved to fulfill and accomplish the social and cultural needs of the populace in their dialectical interplay with the surrounding environment. This relationship conceptualises the man-made environment, as the repository of meaning, in users‟ reciprocal relation with the surrounding environment. In the context of history, the human tends to dwell when experiencing the built environment as meaningful. Traditional contexts are highlighted as physical and spatial interpretations of human activities, skills, thoughts and resources creating identifiable and meaningful realms related to space/place, time and society. The study uncovers the process of the formation of the house and mahalla in order to shed light on how the built environment responds to inhabitants‟ socio-cultural determinants and everyday lives. It unfolds how changes in the nature of Iraqi society and its priorities affect the architecture of home and mahalla by reference to the impact of modernity with all its alien socio-cultural principles. This thesis focuses on the architecture of home and mahalla within the traditional core of Kadhimiya city and similar Iraqi socio-cultural contexts. At the macro analytical level, the research investigates the spatial and physical formation of the mahalla as a whole through detecting the socio-spatial aspects of its realms, and how its spontaneous form has responded to the socio-cultural aspects of the community in an integral pattern. At the micro level, the research will go deeper in the perception of the basic aspects of the individual and the family. It investigates how the traditional house reflects and satisfies the personal values of the individual, and achieves his socio-cultural beliefs and everyday life on the basis of inherent norms and conventions. In this vein, public, semi-public/private and private domains are investigated to highlight the mutual interplay between these spheres as key factors in understanding the architecture of the house and mahalla. The research discusses indigenous aspects and principles contained or embedded in the structure of the traditional environment, such as privacy, social solidarity and stability, neighbourliness and so on. It reveals insight into the male-female relationship in the social life of the traditional context, and how the position of women and their idle qualities impact the structure of the house and the hierarchical sequence and organisation of spaces. Identity, tradition, sustainability and everyday life are the main fields discussed with a specific end goal to outline and uncover the role of social factors, cultural beliefs and daily practices in the creation of this particular form. Building on these values, the research adopts an interpretive historical method in revealing the characters of the traditional environment referring to residents‟ habits, customs, rituals and traditions. Several approaches to the built and home environment are discussed for paving or detecting reliable one in the methodological inquiry within which many tools and methods have been utilised and used i.e. archival records, interviews, historical narratives, personal observation and photographic surveys. Data generated consists of photos, maps, interviewees‟ comments, analytical diagrams and historical and travellers‟ descriptions. Research findings indicate many of the inherent and underlying principles upon which the architecture of Iraqi traditional house depends. Within this context, the study has tried to unfold how the formation of the traditional house and the mahalla responded to the socio-cultural aspects of the community and the daily life of its members. Findings, concerning the design principles of the traditional mahalla, were realised as indigenous norms and standards embedded in the structure of society, which can be useful for architects, designers and planners to reconcile traditional and contemporary urban forms through the application of former rules and conventions in City‟s conservation or redevelopment plans. The study reveals that the traditional environment had less socio-cultural contradictions, active day-to-day practices and clear, identifiable and meaningful identity compared with contemporary built environments. Research findings, thus, lead to a set of relevant recommendations addressed to many of the community categories, architects, planners, stakeholders and those interested in this field. They aim to promote the impressive role of socio-cultural factors and strengthen users‟ competence in their physical and spatial settings for home. Moreover, research recommendations discuss how social factors, cultural values, beliefs, practices and rituals can be re-employed in our approach to achieving a more sustainable living environment. Recommendations relating to identity and tradition aim to draw attention and shed light on the significance of traditional built environments in the development of special identity, which played a big role in the sustainability of these contexts for centuries.

This thesis is an exploration of the collective, that of farm form. The form of a collective organization is of a multiplicity of relationships, rich in information and understandable. It is an interactive coming together of elements, creating something shared by the individual and the whole, a unity made up by a diversity. The exploration puts forth principles which explain the formal and spatial characteristics of the farms. I contend that it is possible to introduce new architecture which respects formal and spatial continuities but allows for a departure in design. In order to make these continuities, and in order for there to be any understanding of the reference used, the observer must be able to look beyond the image and be able to identify the underlying spatial and formal characteristics and principles inherent in the reference. By understanding these underlying principles it is possible to reinforce, in new architecture, the same positive associations found in the form of farms. This thesis exploration has four parts: Part I: A Description of Form. This is a discussion about form and how the formal references will be described. Part II: Cordoba: An Illustration. A street in Cordoba, Spain is used as an illustration of how the observation studies will be documented and diagrammed. Part III: Observation Studies. Five farms are documented and their formal structure analyzed. Part IV: Design Exploration. Windom, Minnesota is the site selected to explore the principles of formal structure found in the observations studies, using a Research and Educational complex as the vehicle for exploration.

For centuries, architectural drawing has been considered one of the most effective representational tools, representing buildings and communicating architectural designs between architects and non-architects. It conveys information by using a set of graphic codes, which then becomes a message that allows architectural drawing not only to be read at a basic level, but also to be decoded. However, the codes have over time become internalised and play out as a private language that excludes non-architects. The use of particular codes within an architectural drawing leads to difficulties in reading and understanding by anyone outside the profession; this becomes a problematic issue in communication between architects and nonarchitects. Therefore, the main aim of this research is to examine whether conventional drawings, in particular plan drawings, are still considered an effective tool for communicating with nonarchitects. The dilemma of how best to communicate between architects and non-architects is explored through three related approaches. First, tracing the history of previous periods makes it possible to perceive and to understand the direction of the potential communication breakdown in the role of today's architectural drawings. Secondly, the process of using drawings as a means of communication is examined through a basic communication process. Finally, a study of research in environmental psychology focuses on the way in which architects and non-architects perceive and interpret such drawings. This consequently acknowledges the limits of architectural drawings found in the role of teaching, learning, and drawing, which are very much established in the structure of architectural education. The communicative potential of conventional drawings is then investigated through a series of empirical tests, with the aim of developing a new set of communicative drawings. This hopefully will mean that non-architects in the future will be better informed in the process of designing buildings. The tests indicate that lay people read architectural drawings differently from architects. They also show ways in which the communicative potential of architectural drawing may be improved. In conclusion, the research suggests a possibility in bridging the communication gap between architectural context and the public realm. It provides implications and recommendations for improving the communicative potential of architectural drawings.

I have always been interested in painting, particularly in the use of color to describe space, time and emotion. This thesis integrates painterly concepts in the making of architecture. Some issues explored include color complementarity, material color, and the expressive use of color in the design process. By thinking of color a<; I design I endeavor to enhance the habitable experience and enable color to actively generate the creation of architecture. The vehicle for color study is the design of a pedestrian bridge in Tacoma Washington. The focus is to produce several schemes exploring color and material and its sequencing along the bridge. The programmatic scope is constrained to maximize issues of color and form making. The design used various media to visualize the design and explore two color systems. Additive color systems lead to painting, pastels, colored pencil, and plaster casting. The computer facilitated image processing, geometrical modelling, and color/ texture mapping in a "subtractive" color system.

Innovations in transportation give us a chance to rethink and redefine the art of city design, centered as much on the quality of public space as on economic efficiency. Transportation is the backbone of urbanism. What is a city if not a group of buildings distributed in space and thus functioning together. Historically, innovations in transportation challenged the temporal and spatial qualities of the city. The automobile expanded the city in breadth. The elevator built it up in height. However, with the expansion of the city size, density and prosperity, we have sacrificed public domain, and worsened of the quality of the urban form. This thesis looks into the relationships between transportation technology as a driver and space as a medium of urban design. With the rapid introduction of new technologies in transportation (autonomous vehicles) there is an opportunity to rethink the aesthetics of the urban form and its perception. Through design research, this thesis seeks to synthesize principles of spatial design and propose potential alternatives to the future of urbanism. The creative process is a key element to generating great architecture, art and science. In order to best utilize this process one must understand different types of creativity, environments that inspire creativity, different processes and techniques and how the conscious and subconscious handle creative thought and creative production. To architecturally explore creative process and production I will design a structure on campus with the purpose of assisting creativity and creative production in the ways that I have come to understand them. Understanding the creative process as it applies to and/or derives from psychology, philosophy, art and/or design is essential to guide and increase creativity. Communicating what is found is equally as important as finding it. A structure with the primary purpose of communicating and allowing creative thought, an architectural muse to inspire creative production, is intended.

This thesis focuses on the collective form of detached houses. A result of the American phenomenon of detached, single family, freestanding houses being the standard type. Through an observation of eight environments of this house type, a theory is developed about a way of designing in the detached house neighborhood. The idea is to consider the design of houses as a group and thus be able to arrange the elements of each to achieve a multiplicity of associations. This would build a collective form that enables the house form to have a high level of individuality. The thesis is divided into two parts: first, observing systems (elements and their relationships) of existing places and deriving a design method; then, using this method, generate a design.

Surface is only one of the fragmented parts of contemporary architecture. As the size of architecture increases, it is broken down into the crown, the surface and the structure for individual consideration. The Bund in Shanghai demonstrates the polarized approach between the contemporary and traditional practice of architecture. The spirit of the Bund is about its unique urban tension between the animated continuity of the Baux-arts faCade wall on the old city side, Puxi, and the contest of contemporary architectural iconography on the new city side, PuDong. Currently, there is one empty lot along the baux-arts fagade wall where it becomes the opportunity for architectural intervention operating between the poles. Through acknowledging the return of surface ornamentation in contemporary architectural practice, the thesis argues that ornamentation and patterns are not only limited to the mere surface operation but also the technique to organize space and structure in architecture. It is through this technique of patterning tectonics that architecture is treated as one intricate network of elements operating in the same ideal of consistency. It is also through this patterning tectonics architecture generates a tangible relationship between the outside perception of the facade to the interior organization of space. Finally, it is also through this patterning tectonics architecture relates itself to culture and urbanity.

This thesis analyses the issue of solar access in environmentally sensitive attitudes to architecture. The primary intention of the study is to scrutinize the relationship between solar access and building form (volume) and investigate the efficiency of solar control on / by this form by means of &lsquo
solar envelope&rsquo
technique which is, first, defined by Knowles and developed in different ways in the last 30 years. Solar envelope in Knowles&rsquo
terms can be defined as the building volume resulting from shadow casting restrictions and must be recognized as a both theoretical and technical method in the form generation of any building. Similar to the concept of maximum developable volume allowed under height restrictions or floor area ratios, solar envelope is, rather, defined by solar access concerns. This method is applicable on single buildings as well as dense urban areas (residential and mix use areas) and is a supportive tool in the form generation in any stage of design. Buildings constructed without exceeding the abstract solar envelope that is constructed on the basis of solar access will be successful in the means of passive solar and low-energy design. Such a success will supply a sustainable development, which is globally discussed as a result of environmental and energy crisis. The aim of this thesis is to represent the method of constructing solar envelope, in case study, with its fundamental aspects and tools. Odtü
kent residences will be the objects of this study. Results of this application will be tested with shadow maps and evaluations both for the existing situation and the proposed envelopes will be developed.

Consonance in urban form is contingent on the continuity of the fine grain architectural features that are imbued in the commodity of the evolved historic urban fabric. A city's past can be viewed therefore as a repository of urban form characteristics from which concise architectural responses can result in a congruent urban landscape. This thesis proposes new methods to evaluate the interplay of architectural elements that can be traced throughout the lifespan of the particular evolving urban areas under scrutiny, and postulates a theory of how the mapping of historical urban form can correlate with deriving parameters for new buildings.

There is no primacy to Architecture. For centuries architects have posited formulaic approaches to creating spatial environments. Bold maxims for design have defined entire periods and styles of architecture, and each subsequent postulation attempts to disprove the former by challenging its theories against imperfect realizations. Yet nearly all have the same fault; they prioritize characteristics of architecture, attempting to design according to absolutisms of thought and process. I believe this to be a dangerous mode of operation, as absolutisms can be extremely complex and difficult to grasp conceptually, let alone to manifest into realities. Reducing architecture to processes of selection, generalization, singularities, and priorities is just clever ways of dealing with complexity in an attempt to make the intangible tangible. This â reductionâ and â simplificationâ can only hold value as a tool for the study and analysis of architecture, not its practice and execution. Although architecture is universally conditional, it has been assigned universal qualities over time in theory and practice. I believe time requires that those qualities be subject to change and reinterpretation so that architecture may maintain proper relevance, barring one constant: all qualities must exist by virtue of the others and cannot be seen independently; one quality is no more than an aspect of the others. To better explore this notion, three criteria (qualities, generators) have been identified as a measure for critical analysis of three architectural research projects. They are built from a history of pre-defined criterion, named and redefined in an attempt to elevate a personal study and practice of architecture at a period in time. These projects have a high degree of personal influence and involvement, and so this becomes in a way a self-analysis in the study and practice of architecture. The intention of this compendium is to gain insight towards a personal definition of architecture through an analysis of architectural theory and precedence in comparison to work that is reflective of personal architectonics. In time, I hope it will have continued to develop.

Form-making is the purposeful arrangement of forms for a specific objective. This includes selecting forms and establishing spatial relations among these forms. Since form making is not a random act, ~here are rules that it must follow. These rules determine the result of the design, or they prescribe the process of designing. There are two types of rules: form rules and procedural rules. Form rules are the main interest of this thesis. Wright once wrote: "Style is important. A style is not. There is all the difference when we work with a style and not for a style." Working with a style is to choose a set of rules with which one works. The choice of the rules is not incidental. Form rules select forms and prescribe the probable relations among them. These rules must subscribe to a particular perspective. The choosing of these rules is a subscription to this specific view-point. This thesis intends to establish some principles of formal behavior, from the "associative built form language," as form rules. It will identify each of the principles and describe the nature of the principles. It will explore the capacity of these principles as working rules. It will also establish the bounds of applicability of these principles for choosing the appropriate principles in each particular problem/context. In accepting these principles, there is the presumption that form making should be committed to reinforcing/ intensifying the associative environment. The nature of this associative built environment therefore must be described. The goal of this thesis is to formalize the principles of formal behavior as form rules. It demonstrates the applications of these rules for describing forms, and for making associative built-form. The form rules are applied to selected design problems as part of a form-making process.
