The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of choosing an appropriate mathematical model when analyzing the data from laboratory-scale studies of waste stabilization ponds. Two case studies are presented based on work by Thirumurthi and Nashashibi (1967) and Uhlmann et al (1983), both using semicontinuous methods of experimentation involving the addition of discrete volumes of feed at regular intervals. In both cases the authors have used mathematical models of continuous processes to analyse their results. This paper shows how semicontinuous models can be used in both studies, leading to significant differences in interpretation of the data; in the first case study this relates to the determination of rate constants and, in the second case study, to the determination of an appropriate model to describe hydraulic mixing. Each case study concludes with a discussion of the significance of the semicontinuous interpretation in the context of waste stabilization pond design.

The non-technical factors that played a role in the transfer and acceptance of the UASB technology for domestic wastewater are identified and discussed for two case studies. In Cali, Colombia, a full scale plant was implemented in a residential area within the framework of a relatively small project. The fact that in the early developing stage of the technology a large amount of UASB reactors were realized in an uncontrolled way, affected the acceptance of the technology negatively, as did also the odour problem that arose at the demonstration plant. In India, where the UASB technology was introduced in the framework of a large governmental environmental programme with a considerable amount of technical support, this technology is at present broadly accepted. Therefore, involvement of policy makers and strengthening of human resources by intensive technical support are considered important factors when transferring technology. For a further dissemination of the technology, appropriate lending practices of financial agencies are considered as crucial as well as providing the institutional requirements to realize revenue collection.

Most current discussion on the techniques for effluent control emphasise the sophisticated approach most appropriate to advanced industrial operations in prosperous environments. This paper aims to demonstrate that a more basic approach still has a valuable role to play. A series of case studies from the United Kingdom examine how the application of simple techniques were able to provide significant environmental benefits at minimal net cost to the discharger. The examples ranged from raw materials recovery and waste recycling, to lateral thinking and the development of non polluting processes. The consequent reductions in effluent load to receiving waters have been found to be highly significant for the environment.

This paper deals with the aerobic biological treatment of industrial wastewaters by aerated lagoons, when high flowrates are involved. A methodology is developed which gives the best fit between the biological reactions and the ideal hydrodynamic behaviour of the lagoon. This analysis, based on the real kinetics of the degradation process, leads to the minimum volume and the ideal behaviour of the lagoon needed to reach the degree of conversion required to respect the discharge regulations. Because the flow field of a lagoon is of “shallow waters” type, appropriate technologies have been designed in order to achieve the mixing (by fluidic deviator) and the aeration (by hydroejector) in such a lagoon. Some applications of these methodologies and technologies to industrial problems in the chemical industry (pulp and paper) and food industry (sugar) are presented. This original approach is suitable for modifying existing aerated lagoons, or for upgrading natural lagoons to aerated lagoons, to successfully meet the new legislation on effluent quality.

In recent years, reed bed systems (RBSs) have been widely considered as a valid technology for sludge treatment. In this study are presented results about sludge stabilization occurring within beds in four RBSs, situated in Tuscany (Italy). The results showed that stabilization of the sludge over time occurred in all RBSs, as shown by the low content of water-soluble carbon and dehydrogenase activity, which measures indirectly the overall microbial metabolism, and by the re-synthesis of humic-like matter highlighted by the pyrolytic indices of mineralization and humification. Results about heavy metal fractionation, an appropriate technique to estimate the heavy metal bioavailability and sludge biotoxicity, showed that the process of sludge stabilization occurring in RBSs retains metals in fractions related to the stabilized organic matter, making metals less bioavailable. Moreover, the concentrations of various toxic organic compounds were below the limit of concentration suggested by the European Union's Working Document on Sludge, for land application. The effectiveness of the stabilization processes in RBs was hence clearly proven by the results that measured mineralization and humification processes, and by the low levels of bioavailable heavy metals and toxic organic compounds in stabilized sludges.

This work presents the extension of a physical model for the spreading of surface fire at landscape scale. In previous work, the model was validated at laboratory scale for fire spreading across litters. The model was then modified to consider the structure of actual vegetation and was included in the wildland fire calculation system Forefire that allows converting the two-dimensional model of fire spread to three dimensions, taking into account spatial information. Two wildland fire behavior case studies were elaborated and used as a basis to test the simulator. Both fires were reconstructed, paying attention to the vegetation mapping, fire history, and meteorological data. The local calibration of the simulator required the development of appropriate fuel models for shrubland vegetation (maquis) for use with the model of fire spread. This study showed the capabilities of the simulator during the typical drought season characterizing the Mediterranean climate when most wildfires occur.

AbstractThis paper explores teaching strategies for communicating complex issues and ideas to a diverse group of students, with different educational and vocational interests, that encourage them to develop critical thinking, and explores pedagogies appropriate to the multidisciplinary field of Aboriginal studies. These issues will be investigated through discussion of a successful simulation case study, including the setting up, resourcing, conducting and debriefing. The simulated case study was an assessed component of the new elective subject, Reconciliation Studies, offered at the University of Technology Sydney. In 2003 students participated in a role-play based on events in relation to the development of the Hindmarsh Island Bridge. Students were assigned roles as stakeholders where they researched and then role-played, through their assigned characters, the multilayered and complex dimensions of this recent dispute. Students were required to reflect critically on the cultural, economic, legal and political issues that were pertinent to their stakeholder and explore the underlying racial, ethical and moral grounds for their particular standpoint. I argue that teaching strategies such as these can contribute to locating Indigenous Australian perspectives and experiences as critical within the professional profiles and practice skills of Australian university graduates.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the implementation of lean within two contrasting UK-based organizations; a food manufacturer and a healthcare organization. The different contexts provide insight to the strategic desire for efficiency gains and tactical issues and challenges of lean execution and implementation. Design/methodology/approach – The research questions developed from the review of the literature were tested using evidence from field-based, action research within a food manufacturer and a National Health Service organization. The reported contrasting case studies contribute to the longer term debate on the adoption and adaptation of lean-based “best practice” within organizations. Findings – There are three primary findings: first, that the adoption of lean provides a strategic benefit, as well as providing a basis for a strategy of operational change; second, that partial, as opposed to full, adoption of lean occurs due to external organizational constraints, such as demand patterns, supplier unreliability, little expertise in deploying change programmes, etc.; and third, that a company will balance the adoption of the lean ideology against the financial costs and operational risks incurred in full adoption. Practical implications – The conclusions drawn add substantially to the ongoing commentaries on aspects of lean, and develop interesting questions for future research regards the developed “Cycles of Lean Implementation” concept. Originality/value – The conclusion proposes that partial implementation of the lean philosophy does not necessarily represent a conscious organizational choice, or any lack of conviction, but is representative of external constraints on the organization. This complements previous commentaries on appropriate strategies and develops interesting questions for future research into operational efficiency.

Category: Other Introduction/Purpose: The cavovarus foot is a true challenge for both the patient and the surgeon. This complex deformity can be a result of many different causal factors including genetics, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, diabetes and spina bifida. It may also be caused or worsened by trauma or surgical procedures. The cavovarus foot is difficult to manage conservatively as it tends to be rigid, is not a good shock absorber and causes the joints of the foot to process abnormal stresses. The mechanical construct of a cavus foot makes it susceptible to a multitude of complications and injuries like inversion ankle sprains and metatarsal stress fractures. Methods: While foot orthoses would likely be the most commonly considered conservative treatment option for the symptomatic cavus foot, other modalities like shoe modification, bespoke and/or therapeutic footwear and bracing have also proven effective. Oftentimes, a combination of the aforementioned options is employed. Given the individual complexities of each cavus foot, the conservative treatment plan is typically custom tailored to fit a particular patient's foot structure, biomechanical and corrective needs, and occupational or recreational demands. A so-called 'cookie cutter' approach is not appropriate for management of the cavovarus foot. Results: A review of published research demonstrates that foot orthoses - and other conservative modalities - are effective in the treatment of the cavus foot. These devices work by correcting the varus foot alignment (when applicable), offloading painful areas such as ball of the foot or the base of the fifth metatarsal, providing shock absorption and replacing lost motion. These applications work together to provide a more normal, safer and energy-efficient gait. Conclusion: Conservative management, specifically pedorthics, is not only a viable treatment option for the cavovarus foot but should be considered integral to the overall management of the cavus foot patient. Pedorthic modalities are successfully used post-operatively or in lieu of surgical intervention. Modern pedorthics (technological advances in shoe and orthotic design, construction and materials) allows for cosmetically pleasing, affordable and comfortable management allowing patients to return to a healthy and active lifestyle in many cases.

This research presents one of the first comprehensive case studies of a small-scale wastewater management project in Vietnam. The research demonstrates how the community integrated a small-scale wastewater management system based on household participation and community management. It is argued that local resources of peri-urban and small towns could be used more efficiently to contribute to wastewater management in Vietnam if appropriate technologies are used and if their management and technical capacities are reinforced.

Handling qualities are expressed as requirements at the interface of the pilot and the machine. In this way, the key functionality questions facing the design engineer are seen from the perspective of the interaction of the human pilot with the aircraft system and the environment in which it operates. In this paper, the author takes a ‘virtual engineering’ approach to handling qualities, emphasising the importance of conducting ‘requirements capture’ and preliminary design as an iterative process. When stretched capabilities are required, this approach minimises the risk to finding appropriate technology solutions, through developing explicit relationships between capability and design parameters, thus facilitating fully informed trade studies and predictions. Case studies from the development of a civil tiltrotor aircraft are presented that show how the difficult challenges facing the designer first need to be structured in terms of HQ predictions and assignments. This then provides the basis on which handling qualities improvements can be constructed within the multidisciplinary context of rotorcraft engineering.

Many challenges are associated with the ever increasing level of energy consumption and the damage to the environment caused by the pollutants from all sectors, On the local level the problem is associated with matters such as noise and air pollution, while on the global level the problems are associated with acid rain, ozone layer depletion and the greenhouse effect (global warming). The transport sector is a major contributor in this respect. The use of appropriate decision-making tools to assist in the assessment of alternative transport policies is required urgently. One such tool is the TEMIS program which was described in Part 1 of this investigation, where the methodology for the enhancement of TEMIS was reported. The enhanced version of TEMIS has subsequently been used to model the effects of different transport scenarios in order to improve future fuel economy and the adverse effects of air emissions as well as the greenhouse gases. In the present paper, three main case studies have been considered to test the effect of different scenarios (in terms of alternative fuels and technical advances) on energy consumption and emissions: firstly, the switch to alternative fuels, through investigating the effects of switching from petrol to diesel, secondly, the effects of switching from diesel to bio-diesel (for buses) and, finally, the effects of technical advances (three-way catalytic converters) and the effects on fuel consumption and emissions are considered.

The Case Study section of the International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation serves two purposes. First, the case studies presented are concerned with problematical issues that are pertinent to students of entrepreneurship. Thus they constitute appropriate teaching and learning vehicles on a variety of postgraduate and undergraduate programmes. Each case study is accompanied by a set of guidelines for the use of tutors. Second, it is envisaged that those engaged in entrepreneurial activities will find the cases both interesting and useful. Since the 1990s, public policy makers and private investors have been creating bio-incubators with the aim of obtaining a foothold in what many presume is one of the hottest future industries. This case study provides an in-depth picture of the biggest UK-based bio-incubator – BioCity Nottingham. The study outlines the history and regional context of the incubator as well as its service portfolio and a profile of its supported firms. The study provides insights into the formation of biotechnology companies, the role of the regional context in shaping business models and the emergence of a science-based business network. As a major implication, Nottingham's location, remote from the epicentre of both science and venture capital in the UK, favours service-based business models. BioCity provides a fascinating opportunity to become acquainted with local conditions of business incubation.

In Japan most of the water distribution networks were constructed during the 1960s to 1970s. Since these pipelines were used for a long period, pipeline rehabilitation is necessary to maintain water supply. Although investment for pipeline rehabilitation has to be planned in terms of cost-effectiveness, no standard method has been established because pipelines were replaced on emergency and ad hoc basis in the past. In this paper, a method to determine the maintenance of the water supply on an optimal basis with a fixed budget for a water distribution network is proposed. Firstly, a method to quantify the benefits of pipeline rehabilitation is examined. Secondly, two models using Integer Programming and Monte Carlo simulation to maximize the benefits of pipeline rehabilitation with limited budget were considered, and they are applied to a model case and a case study. Based on these studies, it is concluded that the Monte Carlo simulation model to calculate the appropriate investment for the pipeline rehabilitation planning is both convenient and practical.

Adapted technology, in particular smart cards and terminals, can help people with special needs, such as those with physical disabilities, in the information age to carry out common activities independently. This paper illustrates the possibilities of the technology with results from the SATURN (Smart Cards And Terminals Usability Requirements and Needs) project. Economically viable smart card technology can now provide a range of adaptations to accommodate the requirements of this population. The practicability of this technology is illustrated with case studies. When implementing the technology, the selection of appropriate adaptations by occupational therapists and other professionals will be paramount. Small Island States (SIDS) are among the nations most exposed to climate change (CC) and are characterised by a high degree of vulnerability. Their unique nature means there is a need for more studies focused on the limits to CC adaptation on such fragile nations, particularly regarding their problems and constraints. This paper addressed a perceived need for research into the limitations of adaptation on SIDS, focusing on the many unique restrictions. To this end, the study identified and described the adaptation limits they have by using a review of the literature and an analysis of case studies from a sample of five SIDS in the Caribbean and Pacific regions (Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Cook Islands, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Tonga). This research’s findings showed that an adaptable SIDS is characterised by awareness of various values, appreciation and understanding of a diversity of impacts and vulnerabilities, and acceptance of certain losses through change. The implications of this paper are two-fold. It explains why island nations continue to suffer from the impacts of CC and suggest some of the means via which adequate policies may support SIDS in their efforts to cope with the threats associated with a changing climate. This study concluded that, despite the technological and ecological limits (hard limits) affecting natural systems, adaptation to CC is limited by such complex forces and societal factors (soft limits) that more adequate adaptation strategies could overcome.

Summary Continuous improvements in reservoir simulation software and the availability of high performance computing equipment are making the use of simulation models commonplace for field development and planning purposes. Naturally, this trend has also increased interest in the use of reservoir simulation model results in the oil and gas reserves estimation process. As simulation specialists who work in a primarily reserves-evaluation company, the authors are routinely asked to evaluate, and in many cases incorporate, simulation results in the reserves estimation process. In addition, the authors are required to opine on the approach and tactics used by clients while they incorporate numerical models in their reserves bookings. Because limited published discussion exists on this topic, the purpose of this paper is to provide some examples of the approach used by the authors. We believe this approach to be appropriate and within the spirit of reserves interpretation as used by typical reserves regulatory bodies such as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Papers previously published have discussed the use of models in the reserves process, including the evaluation of the models themselves (Palke and Rietz 2001; Rietz and Usmani 2005). In contrast, this paper provides three case studies that illustrate how results from various models have been used to assist in quantifying reserves. Two of the examples are based on history-matched models, while the third focuses on a pre-production reservoir where no adequate history is available and probabilistic methods were incorporated to help understand the uncertainty in the forecasts. While there is no "cookbook" or step-by-step procedure for using simulation results to estimate reserves, the case studies presented in this paper are intended to both show some examples and also spark some debate and discussion. Undoubtedly there will be some disagreement with our techniques, but an open discussion should prove to be beneficial for both reserves evaluators and simulation specialists.

ObjectivesDue to the nature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), health technology assessment (HTA) agencies might face considerable challenges in choosing appropriate outcomes and outcome measures for drugs that treat the condition. This study sought to understand which outcomes informed previous HTAs, to explore possible reasons for prioritizations, and derive potential implications for future assessments of AD drugs.MethodWe conducted a literature review of studies that analyzed decisions made in HTAs (across disease areas) in three European countries: England, Germany, and The Netherlands. We then conducted case studies of technology assessments conducted for AD drugs in these countries.ResultsOverall, outcomes measured using clinical scales dominated decisions or recommendations about whether to fund AD drugs, or price negotiations. HTA processes did not always allow the inclusion of outcomes relevant to people with AD, their carers, and families. Processes did not include early discussion and agreement on what would constitute appropriate outcome measures and cut-off points for effects.ConclusionsWe conclude that in order to ensure that future AD drugs are valued appropriately and timely, early agreement with various stakeholders about outcomes, outcome measures, and cut-offs is important.

This paper studies primary canals of three traditional irrigation systems in the southern plains of Nepal. It offers a scientific interpretation of the indigenous technology applied to the systems, which facilitates to use the same channel network for irrigation, drainage and flood management. The flood management technology of the farmers by diverting as much discharge as possible to the field channels results in the reduction of discharge towards the downstream part of the main channel. It is depicted in the simulation study that uses the river analysis program HEC-RAS 4.0. A cascade of weirs is found to be the most cost effective and user-friendly option to upgrade these systems preserving the existing irrigation, drainage as well as flood management functions. This study suggests that the conventional irrigation design principles should be applied very cautiously with full knowledge of the existing socio-institutional setting, hydro-ecological regime and indigenous technology for upgrading any traditional irrigation system successfully. The indigenous flood management technology strengthens the emerging concept that the floods in the Ganges plain are to be managed, not controlled.

There is extensive evidence to suggest that many industrial products are designed with far too many parts. Design for assembly (DFA) case studies indicate that, in many designs, large proportions of excess components are only used for joining. In many cases an excessive number of incorrect joining processes are used, possibly due to a lack of knowledge of such factors as availability, cost and functional performance of alternatives. Selection methodologies exist for some individual joining technologies. However, selecting the most appropriate technology is usually left to the designer through a non-formalized judgemental approach. This paper introduces a new methodology for identifying the most appropriate joining technology and its specific process variants, through both a paper-based methodology and software implementation, as a part of a proactive approach to DFA. The underlying strategy adopted is described and the selection process itself and its application to industrial case studies is demonstrated.

Abstract In the applied sciences and in engineering there is often a significant overlap between work at universities and in industry. For the individual scholar, this may lead to serious conflicts when working on joint university–industry projects. Differences in goals, such as the university’s aim to disseminate knowledge while industry aims to appropriate knowledge, might lead to complicated situations and conflicts of interest. The detailed cases of two electrical engineers and two architects working at two different universities of technology illustrate the kinds of problems individual scholars face in university–business collaborations. These cases are based on qualitative interviews and additional data and demonstrate that, while value conflicts emerge on the organizational level, it is primarily the individual researcher who must deal with such conflicts. This analysis adds to existing studies in two ways: first, it explicitly addresses normative issues framed in terms of ethical and social values, thereby going beyond the common social-science perspective of university–business collaboration. Secondly, it provides qualitative insights, thereby identifying details and issues not apparent in quantitative studies. In particular, it is evident that university–industry collaborations are prone to value conflicts not only in research but also in education and job training.

The typical adult-onset form of Huntington's disease (HD) is a clinical condition in which the latest advances of genetic research can be usefully applied during the course of the diagnostic process; not so clear are the guidelines for the much less frequent late-onset variant. We have recently seen three patients in their late sixties who had been misdiagnosed for up to 10 years due to the apparently isolated, mild, and slowly progressive nature of their hyperkinetic movements or cognitive disorders. Only after the results of DNA sequencing on a blood sample became available could the appropriate diagnosis of late-onset HD be reached. By contrast, neuroimaging studies lacked sufficient sensitivity and specificity. Appropriate neurogeriatric assessment in these cases should follow specific guidelines and should always include selected high-technology procedures.

Many corporate failures have occurred over the years as a result of poor financial reporting practices that have eluded investors and other consumers of financial data. The research used the University for Development Studies (UDS) as a case study. The study focused on three main goals: identifying emerging determinants of quality financial reporting, examining the efficacy and adequacy of UDS's internal control structure, and determining how much Internal Audit contributes to quality financial reporting. The research used a descriptive survey template and a sample size of 70 people who were chosen using purposive and stratified sampling techniques. To achieve objectives one and two, the analysis used binary regression, while to achieve objective three, the Best (2005) index was updated and used. Financial reporting accuracy, a computerized accounting system, and personnel competence were found to be determinants of quality financial reporting in the study. It was discovered that UDS' internal control system is ineffective since two of the five main components that make up an efficient internal control system, namely control environment and information and communication, are not properly implemented. The study found that UDS' internal audit reflects an average level of fraud prevention in terms of the robustness of auditing processes and fraud prevention indicators, with the remaining indicators indicating a high level of fraud prevention. Overall, UDS' internal auditing reveals a high degree of prevention. The University for Development Studies (UDS) should analyze, define, and enforce control setting, information, and communication components of the internal control system that are appropriate for their work processes, as well as enhance the existing components, according to the report. New technologies have major effects on the profitability of companies and the economic growth of society. If appropriate technologies can be routinely selected, then it is possible to achieve sustainability at a company level. Knowledge management (KM) can be used to support technology decision making and give an understanding of the potential of particular technologies in a specific business environment. In this study, the design research methodology (DRM) is used with three case studies in an industry environment to develop and evaluate a novel technology valuation method (TVM). The proposed six-step TVM focuses on the acquisition, modeling, and validation of product-related knowledge to support KM related to technology decisions. The contribution of this research is to use distinctions between product properties and behaviors with a disposition toward understanding the potential of technology. During the process, tacit knowledge is made visible and documented, which supports the reliability of technology decisions and enables companies to gain sustainability.

Metal finishing plants, although the wastewaters and treatment schemes for this category are well defined, require a case by case evaluation to find appropriate solutions and to solve specific problems. In this paper, a case study conducted on a welding electrode plant is presented. The wastewater sources were surface cleaning, copper plating and soap solutions used for drawing which were frequently included in waters. The plant was subjected to pretreatment standards, which necessitated the control of sulfate and organic matter in addition to standard parameters of metals, oil, suspended solids etc. Following a source-based characterization, treatability studies were conducted to treat high concentration of sulfate, organic matter as well as heavy metals and oil-grease. The proposed treatment scheme involved separate treatment of copper bath for recovery, chemical oxidation for soap solutions, sulfate precipitation for sulfuric acid bath and application of hydroxide precipitation to proper combination of other wastewater sources.

The objective of this research was to develop a quality outcome matrix by exploring a systematic pattern for selecting quality tools and techniques in the Industrial Revolution 4.0, particularly in the smart manufacturing context. By conducting this analysis, the researchers found homogeneous patterns of sufficient quality case studies that can provide a basis for selecting appropriate groups of quality tools and techniques in different scenarios. Multiple case studies and an in-depth literature review were used as the research design approach. Two qualitative data collection methods were used: (1) primary data from face-to-face interviews with employees at Toyo Memory Technology and Intel Malaysia, and (2) secondary data from a previous study. Our study aimed to answer the following research question: “What are the appropriate tools and techniques concerning circumstances of quality dimensions and smart manufacturing?” Thus, our research developed a diagnostic matrix by developing an outcome matrix for selecting appropriate quality tools and techniques. The scientific novelty of this work is that this is a real-world case study describing the authors’ theoretical and practical prerequisites that can help other researchers and industrial practitioners or manufacturers in selecting the appropriate sets of quality tools and techniques for solving quality problems.

Hydrogen supplementation in diesel Compression Ignition (CI) engines is gaining more attention, since it is considered as a feasible solution to tackle the challenges that are related to the emission regulations that will be applied in the forthcoming years. Such a solution is very attractive because it requires only limited modifications to the existing technology of internal combustion CI engines. To this end, numerous work on the investigation of an engine’s performance and the effects of emissions when hydrogen is supplied in the engine’s cylinders has been completed by researchers. However, contradictory results were found among these studies regarding the efficiency of the engine and the emission characteristics achieved compared to the diesel-only operation. The different conclusions might be attributed to the different characteristics and technology level of the engines that were utilized, as well as on the chosen operational parameters. This paper aims to present an overview of the experimental studies that have examined the effects of hydrogen addition in CI four-stroke diesel engines, reporting the characteristics of the utilized engines, the quantities of hydrogen tested, the method of hydrogen induction used, as well as the operational conditions tested, in order to help interested researchers to easily identify relevant and appropriate studies to perform comparisons or validations by repeating certain cases. The presented data do not include any results or conclusions from these studies. Furthermore, an experimental configuration along with the appropriate modifications on a heavy-duty auxiliary generator-set engine that was recently developed by the authors for the purposes of the HYMAR project is presented.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced in June 1985 a new strategy to reduce public exposure to toxic air pollutants in the ambient air. Over the next 5–8 years, the strategy called for State and Local authorities to take on more of the lead regulatory role, with the Agency providing technical and financial assistance to their efforts. The shift in emphasis and responsibility from the Federal level to State and Local air toxics programs and the need to transfer expertise from the Federal level to the appropriate State or Local level prompted EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD) and EPA's Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards (OAQPS) to develop and implement an innovative technical assistance program. This program is called the Control Technology Center (CTC). It has since been expanded to include technical assistance in the area of control of air toxics, particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs); emission measurements; and other areas where expertise is available to ORD and OAQPS. During the CTC's first year of operation, operating guidelines were developed and three categories of technical assistance were established. These categories are telephone HOTLINE calls, direct engineering assistance, and technical guidance projects. The CTC HOTLINE is a special telephone number which State and Local Agencies can call for easy access to EPA personnel who can provide prompt assistance in a variety of ways including discussions, references to pertinent literature, and referrals to other EPA personnel. In some cases, a HOTLINE call will require more in-depth engineering analysis indicating a need for direct engineering assistance. These projects tend to be short-term (2 to 3 months) and specific in nature. In some cases, several agencies may indicate a need for information on the same source, or a group of Agencies may make a joint request. In these cases, the CTC Steering Committee, a group who advises the CTC managers, may decide that a technical guidance project is indicated. Technical guidance projects are longer-term and are intended to be of broad interest, useful to many agencies. This paper discusses the development of the CTC, experience to date with its operation, and future plans. In addition, five CTC projects are discussed to illustrate the assistance provided.

One effective way of accelerating the commercialization of university innovations (inventions) is to execute a “Technological Entrepreneurship” framework that helps the execution of agreements between universities and industry for commercialization. Academics have been encouraged to commercialize their research and findings yet the level of success of commercialization of inventions (innovations) in industry is questionable. As there is no agreed commercialization framework to guide the execution of processes to support inventions moving from laboratories to the right market. The lack of capabilities of appropriate processes have undermined the turning of innovation and products into wealth. The research questions are designed to identify the constraints and hindrances of commercialization and the characteristics of successful processes built from framework based on selected case studies of incubation capabilities within universities commercialization program.

Abstract Several deterioration models have been used to predict the structural condition of sewer pipes, and some have been applied in different cities in the world. However, each one of these models has not been proved simultaneously for case studies with different characteristics (topographic conditions, soil uses, demographic growth, utilities' service operation and city's dynamic) and the use of their predictions have not been analyzed to support different management objectives. Therefore, the objective of this work was to assess the prediction results of two models (based on Logistic Regression and Random Forest (RF) methods), which previously have been identified as successful in other experiences, for two different case studies (a city in Colombia and a city in Germany). The prediction assessment was carried out by three analysis techniques (Positive Likelihood Rate (PLR) index, performance curve and deviation analysis). According to the results, we found that: (i) the model based on RF was the one that could be useful as a support tool in the sewer asset management of both case studies; (ii) for the German city, the prediction results could be useful for designing strategic investment plans in order to know the number of pipes that the utility should rehabilitate each year; and (iii) for the Colombian city, the predictions are appropriate to make decisions concerning inspection or rehabilitation plans, since the probability of identifying the sewer's assets in critical condition (C4) correctly (according to the analysis of the sample of the 10% of sewers with the highest probability to be in this condition) is around 63% and could be 83% if the stakeholders also consider in these plans the misclassification of those pipes in a bad structural condition (C3).

Context Continued demand for long-distance remote wildlife tracking has resulted in the development of a variety of satellite tracking technologies. Choosing an appropriate satellite tracking system for a project involves financial, technical and operational tradeoffs associated with different systems. Aim The aim of the present research was to assess the technology options and associated costs to help wildlife researchers select the best tracking solution for their needs. Methods A technology-choice decision guide was developed to assist wildlife scientists select an optimal tracking technology. We undertook four satellite tracking case studies involving avian, aquatic and terrestrial species living in diverse environments around the world and use these case studies to validate and test the technology-choice decision guide and to calculate the cost effectiveness of alternative tracking methods. Technologies used in marine tracking were out of the scope of the present paper. Key results Choosing the tracking method best suited for a project requires (1) clearly specifying the data required to meet project objectives, (2) understanding the constraints imposed by the study species and its environment, and (3) calculating the net cost per datum of the various tracking methods available. Key conclusions We suggest that, in most circumstances, global positioning system (GPS) tracking is preferable to other options. However, where weight and environmental limitations prevent the use of GPS, alternatives such as Argos satellite Doppler-based positions (Argos) or very high frequency (VHF) can function adequately. Implications The present paper provides simplified criteria for selecting the best wildlife satellite tracking technology for different situations.

Mass customization production is a manufacturing process in which mass-produced products are modified according to specific customer needs. An example of such production is furniture production, where multiple options options for various components or features are available. Demand forecasting in mass customization industry is a difficult task for organizations and is both crucial for their profits and for market penetration. Unfortunately, the currently available tools are focused on more standard demand forecasts, which lack interpretable representation of information relevant for mass customization products. This is especially relevant for ERP systems, which are the backbone of modern manufacturing. We propose a forecasting method adapted to the needs of mass customization by focusing on demand prediction—not on finished products, but on key intermediate goods. Moreover, we provide a method for determining such goods. As an additional consequence we provide an implementation strategy that reduces the risk and time consumption when implementing forecasting in ERP systems. All the results are implemented as appropriate functionalities of a IFS Application ERP system.

Information Systems (IS) research continues to contribute to a long list of technology adoption factors from many studies conducted outside the Latin American (LAT) nations. These investigations fail to appropriate the context of IS adoption in LAT. This fail is mainly due to the geographical scope of existing studies. Those aimed at North America for example, are out of context regarding a diverse technological approach when applied to LAT. Further, uncertainty and an inability to predict outcomes of technology adoption, create variances in results because the local contexts are not considered. The reasons for this are unclear from existing studies. To detailed explore this problem further, a Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) was applied to LAT economies, expecting to assess a refined set of drivers from existing technology adoption studies. A Fuzzy Logic process was used to refine these drivers. The research found that fourteen themes are candidates for future study purposes. The drivers provide LAT stakeholders, as well as actors from other emerging economies, with a contextual frame that can be the basis for adopting technology more meaningfully within these nations

Force plate assessments, such as countermovement jumps and isometric mid-thigh pulls, examine performances (e.g., jump height, force, power) and movement strategies (e.g., asymmetries, durations), and are best suited to characterize and monitor physical capabilities, not predict injuries. To begin applying force plate technologies, users must first; (1) develop a data management plan to visualize and capture data over time; (2) select appropriate force plates for their scenario; (3) design appropriate testing protocols to ensure valid and reliable data. Force plate assessments may be added to existing testing, serve as separate testing batteries for annual profile testing to compare individuals and understand initial physical capabilities, or for more frequent testing (i.e., monthly or weekly) to monitor training-related adaptations or neuromuscular fatigue. Although these assessments inform evidence-based program designs, human performance practitioners must understand the considerations for conducting appropriate force plate testing, as well as proper visualizations and management of force plate data. Thus, the aim of this review is to provide evidence-based practices for utilizing force plates in tactical populations (e.g., military, firefighters, police). This includes best practices to implement testing for performance profiling, training adaptations, and monitoring neuromuscular fatigue and force asymmetries. Of note, due to the large amount of force-time metrics to choose from, this article provides general examples of important metrics to monitor and training recommendations based on changes to these force-time metrics, followed by specific examples in three case studies.

Integrated water resources planning (IWRP) seeks to rationalize water resources projects in a region for optimum utilization of water, appropriate conservation, cost-effectiveness, and attainment of maximum economic and socio-environmental benefits. This paper examines those aspects of water resources planning which interact with the environment. It also presents corresponding environmental conservation parameters and various approaches to pollution controls. Mutually pertinent points identify the planning parameters. Case studies of IWRP are presented.

Modern technology plays a fundamental role in the engineering activities undertaken in day-to-day operations, in order to obtain the necessary material for construction or to obtain certain useful materials that are found near the surface. A special contribution of this branch of terrestrial measurements, of the topography, using modern technology, is materialized by specific studies carried out from a preliminary phase of design of the operation and up to the phase in which the perimeter is ecologized. The present article aims to test and evaluate the accuracy of the data for volumetric measurements of exploited material, using modern technology and specialized software based on topographic altitude, with which we will be able to realize the three-dimensional model of the operating perimeter. For this purpose, an exploitation has been chosen on the appropriate surface, materialized through a case study, with reference to the Doman Quarry, Caras Severin, in which we determined the volumes exploited during the activity period.

With the flagship success of M-Pesa, mobile devices have become an important tool to facilitate the financial inclusion of the previously unbanked population in developing countries. Following the success of M-Pesa in Kenya in 2007, mobile money technologies became widespread across Africa. Beginning in 2009, Ghana experienced exceptional adoption of Mobile Money technology. Many studies have examined the influence of mobile money on financial inclusion from a variety of perspectives, and many have concluded that mobile money is a game-changer in this regard. The Mobile Money concept has evolved based on introducing the other value-added services such as microloans, savings, and insurance portfolios. The researcher used a questionnaire and a face-to-face interview to obtain qualitative data for this study. Together with other research, the statistics revealed that Mobile Money transactions in Ghana had more than tripled since it became the most popular payment method. Over the last year, the platform as a service has created over 140,000 jobs and has shown to be the safest channel. It has several advantages, including lowering the cost of printing and keeping cash on hand, as well as decreasing fraud because the technology underlying it gives appropriate audit trails to prevent fraud and boost economic growth.

Mobile technology promises to enhance and better support students' learning. The exploration and adoption of appropriate pedagogies that enhance learning is crucial for the wider adoption of mobile learning. An increasing number of studies have started to address how existing learning theory can be used to underpin and better frame mobile learning activities. In particular, there are a number of learning theories that have been identified which particularly lend themselves to the specific affordances of mobile learning. This paper examines how mobile technology was incorporated within three different computing courses. These case studies explore how specific learning approaches (collaborative learning, connectivism and experiential learning) were adopted to frame the use of the technology within each course and how the affordances of mobile technology were harnessed to enhance and better support existing learning practices.

Regarding low-carbon and sustainable development as themes of the era, people concentrate more on resources recycling. However the current social recycling system loses substantial potential recyclable resources and causes additional waste of energy and resources itself, due to the lack of an appropriate and effective mechanism. Based on the studies of modern logistics and reverse logistics, this article proposes a technique as Recycling Reverse Logistics System to solve the problem in order to improve the situation. Combined with E-business and IT technology, the technique provides measures to construct and assess the system. In addition, the article provides a case-study of the campus paper recycling system, so that the technique is tested and validated.
