This study investigates methods of Qur'anic interpretation through a linguistic approach, with a focus on semantics and semiotics—both of which are essential for mufassirs (Qur'anic interpreters) in understanding Arabic. The primary objective is to explore how semiotic concepts are applied in interpreting the word نُور (Nuur, meaning "light") in verse 35 of Surah an-Nur. This research adopts a library-based content analysis with a qualitative descriptive approach. Semiotic theory is employed to examine the tafsir works of Jalalain, Ibn Kathir, Quraish Shihab, and al-Tabari. Semiotics, the study of signs and their meanings, reveals that these mufassirs have applied semiotic principles in their interpretations. In Tafsir Jalalain, Saussure’s semiotic theory is evident in the treatment of نُور, where the signifier represents meanings such as light, guidance, and Islam. In Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Roland Barthes’ semiotics is utilized, highlighting both the denotative and connotative meanings of the word. In Tafsir al-Tabari, Roman Jakobson’s communication model is applied, incorporating elements like sender, receiver, and message. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that semiotic concepts are widely integrated into the interpretative practices of mufassirs in their analysis of Qur'anic verses.

AbstractThe rise of big digital data is changing the framework within which linguists, sociologists, anthropologists, and other researchers are working. Semiotics is not spared by this paradigm shift. A data-driven computational semiotics is the study with an intensive use of computational methods of patterns in human-created contents related to semiotic phenomena. One of the most promising frameworks in this research program is the Semantic Vector Space (SVS) models and their methods. The objective of this article is to contribute to the exploration of the SVS for a computational semiotics by showing what types of semiotic analysis can be accomplished within this framework. The study is applied to a unique body of digitized artworks. We conducted three short experiments in which we explore three types of semiotic analysis: paradigmatic analysis, componential analysis, and topic modelling analysis. The results reported show that the SVS constitutes a powerful framework within which various types of semiotic analysis can be carried out.

The current paper presents an overview of interpersonal conflicts in discourse area of character in modern English fiction discourse from the standpoint of multimodality theory, pragmalinguistics, and semiotics. In this respect semiosis is defined as the action of a sign, a dynamic process of meaning-making and meaning-interpretation realized through multimodal semiotic modes which collectively construct the meaning, communicated in these situations. This constructing is proceeded with the help of conflictives as emergent discursive constructs, the result of interactive constructing by means of verbal, nonverbal and graphic semiotic resources functioning in different stages of conflict communicative process. The linguosemiotic space of their realization is in the plane of disharmony of interpersonal relations of characters and its semiosis is built on cognitive, semiotic, communicative, and pragmatic specifics of conflictives as operational units of conflict discourse. Moreover, the appropriate inferences require understanding of cognitive, psychological, social, and cultural aspects accompanying narration. The aim of the study is also to establish a link between different approaches to the interpretation of conflict communication development and methods of their research in modern scientific studies. Multimodal nature of conflictives comprises several modes of multimodality for the analysis of conflict semiosis in fiction discourse: verbal, nonverbal, visual, auditory, kinetic etc. These patterns of meaning combination or meaning multiplication through different semiotic modes together construct the meaning, communicated and interpreted in the situations of interpersonal conflicts in discourse area of character in modern English fiction discourse. To achieve the objectives of research, a semiotic approach to the paradigm of conflict discourse approaches is applied, together with the elements of conversational analysis, multimodal discourse analysis, pragmatic analysis. The obtained results show the capacity of the semiotic approach to the conflict studies to enhance the effectiveness of linguistic research in the field of conflict studies.

Several mutually informing methods for analyzing cartographic and geospatial images are presented and illustrated in this work. First, an apparently objective method, content analysis, is applied to a collection of corporate annual reports' geospatial imagery resulting in a categorization and description of those images. Then a traditional semiotic analysis is conducted on the same data done by experts who describe and express out of their personal expertise and intuitive insights the meaning of signs contained in the imagery. Subsequently, a user/viewer epistemological and ontological framework called sense-making is discussed and combined with semiotic processes enabling social semiotics. Sense-making permits map users to present their point of view providing a method to go beyond the experts' traditional semiotic interpretations. These user/viewer based interpretations incorporate postmodern meanings from the various users of signs exposed by the corporate annual reports' geospatial imagery.

AbstractSemiotic analysis of the role of the observer in the theory of relativity and in quantum mechanics shows the semiotic function of basic symmetries, such as symmetries under translation and rotation. How can semiotics be relevant to theories in physics? It is always human beings who form the theories. In the process of theory formation and communication, they rely on semiotic systems. Included among these systems is the semiotics involved in our pre-theoretical human understanding of space, time, and motion. Semiotic systems thereby have an influence on theories in physics. As a result, key concepts in fundamental physical theory have affinities with semiotics. In terms of Kenneth Pike’s tagmemic theory, applied as a theory of theories, all symmetries take the form of distributional constraints. The additional symmetry under Lorentz transformations introduced by the special theory of relativity fits into the same pattern. In addition, constraints introduced by the addition of general relativity suggest the form and limitations that might be taken by a “theory of everything” encompassing general relativity and quantum field theory.

Chinese hieroglyphic writing has developed ways of recording meanings that differ from those in alphabetic systems, which generates interest in the hieroglyph as an object of research. This study complements the semiotic theory, which is usually applied to alphabetic systems, while looking for a complementary way to describe the ambiguous semiotics of Chinese writing. The study relied on a cross-disciplinary approach, i.e., the theory of semiosis in synthesis with the cultural-historical concept and a tertiary artifact as a link between them. A tertiary artifact corresponds to the semiotic sign-symbol, which is an implicit valuable textual category that cannot be manifested in a specific sign. The theory of artifacts was used in conjunction with a semiotic approach to the analysis of Chinese writing, both at the level of individual signs and at the text level. Diachronically, Chinese hieroglyphic signs tended towards symbolic semantics as they evolved, especially in cases where object nomination was motivated. As a synchronic example, the authors used a compositionally complex text of Wang Wei’s poem Magnolia Valley (辛夷坞), which illustrates the symbol both implicitly and explicitly. The analysis proved that semiotic ideas applied to alphabetic languages can be applied to Chinese writing but with the following caveat: in Chinese text, the implicit semantics of the symbol, being associated with a visually vivid imagery, hints at the symbol hidden behind the lines. Unlike letters, the hieroglyph possesses an additional technical potential for constructing an explicit series of images, thus contributing to a more effective comprehension of the main idea and morals, the emergence of which is regulated by its symbolic mode.

Abstract Within the discipline of semiotics, written text remains the primary mode of communication and analysis, despite the fact that, as all good semioticians know, signs occur in all modalities – which is why we think of artists and musicians, no less than novelists and poets, as applied semioticians par excellence. In 1997, Paul Cobley and Litza Jansz combined the semiotic tools of words and drawings to produce what is undoubtedly one of the most successful and influential texts for the dissemination of semiotic theory: the illustrated graphic guide called Semiotics for beginners (later published as Introducing semiotics). On the occasion of this well-deserved festschrift honoring Paul’s life of work in semiotics, the authors felt it most appropriate to pay homage to Paul – and to the graphic guide with which he has inspired countless readers across the world to better understand the fundamentals of semiotics – by once again combining the semiotic tools of words and drawings to illustrate the ideas and history of this master semiotician.

One of the most important components in teaching-learning activities is textbooks. The author of the textbook must tailor it to the cognitive development of children at a given age. Semiotics is one of the factors that can be examined in a textbook since the illustration of semiotics is a particular feature that substantially influences children's visual perception. The purpose of this research is to examine Semiotics in Elementary School English textbooks. This study applied qualitative research in terms of library research to collect the data from the students' English textbooks in the second-grade Elementary school. Semiotic analysis based on Pierce's semiotic theory, namely representamen (signifier), object (referent), and interpretant, was used to analyze the data (signified). Because the activities contain symbols, pictures, and signs that are extremely engaging for the second-grade students of Elementary school at SDIT Al-Hijrah 2, this study concluded that this book is very suited for learning for the second-grade students of Elementary school at SDIT Al-Hijrah 2. The researchers looked at the most important images relevant to the theme of the activities. In addition, the exercise imagery and meaning are linked to one another.

Relevance is the critical criterion for valuing information. The usual requirements of valuable information resources are their accuracy, brevity, timeliness and rarity. This thesis points out that relevance has to be explicitly recognised as an important quality of information. Therefore, the theory of signs is adopted to enable a systematic study of the problem of relevance according to the branches of semiotics in order to clarify the concept of information. Relevance has several meanings according to the various disciplinary approaches including phenomenology, law, logic, information science, communication and cognition. These different concepts are discussed and criticised in two chapters. A new approach is proposed in which a universal concept of relevance is considered as an affordance. Therefore, all the approaches to relevance can be applied within the broader approach of the analysis of affordances. This approach not only encompasses all the underlying characteristics of relevance, it is also compatible with the assumptions of the logic of norms and affordances (NORMA). NORMA semantic analysis is used as a basis on which concepts of relevance are applied semiotically. Two case- studies are selected for testing these concepts which results in a guideline for practical application in a semiotic framework. The results from these case-studies confirm the practical importance of these concepts of relevance which can be systematically used in the analysis and design of information systems. It also reaffirms the underlying characteristics of relevance which exist in the context of social reality.

The dissertation named\' Analysis of the musical discourse: a semiotical approach\' discusses the application on musical analysis of the model championed by lithuanian linguist Algirdas Julien Greimas which conceives the process of generation of meaning as a path from abstract oppositions to narrative structures and hence to the discourse itself, which is called meaning generation path. The first chapter brings a general exposition which situates its analytical proposal in terms of the historical development of both musicology and the french branch of semiotical studies, which is committed with Structuralism. On chapter II, a detailed application of the theoretical model is presented step by step with the help of commented examples regarding some of the most appealing compositions of western repertory such as Beethoven\'s 5th. Symphony, Tschaikovsky\'s 4th Symphony and the first fugue of Bach\'s Well-tempered keyboard. The conclusion suggests that a semiotical approach on music should start with considering the superficial aspects of musical discourse so that its tensive and phorical course can be inferred and conceived as a complex of modulations where its internal relationships of attraction and repulsion may be ordinated in terms of valence. Based on the hypothesis of the existence of an instance of discreteness which converts the valences of the fundamental level into values of the narrative level and modulations into modalities, the study of narrative brings forth two main contributions. First, a semantical approach which explains the relationship between theme and musical form and revolutionizes the concept of musical variation. Second, a semiotical research on passion in music.

The objective of this thesis is to analyze violence in the photographs of photojournalists in Chile and Mexico in the years 1980 - 1990. The research will take fifteen cases that will be analyzed technically and semiologically, based on Luciano Nanni's aesthetic scheme. The methodology used was qualitative with comparative from generalities, as a way of approaching both types of cases, Chilean and Mexican, in the search for the analysis of violence in the photographs recorded in the chronological context mentioned above. The research considers an exhaustive look at violence from the Neolithic, detecting facts of systematic violence, to contemporary facts such as the importance of the image, photography and the ways of interpreting it in antiquity, as pillars for the current reading of the cases and the interpretation considering the historical load of the visible facts for society. The semiology interpretation, incorporates a technical analysis in post of the communication eventually delivered by the images, the research is of no lesser importance, since the scarce investigative heritage in this area, either because its treatment has been carried out separately or because it does not specifically address the phenomenon of violence, from the visuality, Thus, these elements become preponderant for the elaboration of a categorization and significance of the cases presented here, as determinants to understand why violence was recorded and to know the motivations that Chilean and Mexican photojournalists may have had to do so. A priori it can be detected that the personal reflection of the facts: social injustice, socioeconomic polarization, such as the civil-military dictatorship in Chile, were triggers for the creation of images with the personal charge of their authors, thus being able to identify dissimilar and/or dissimilar objectives between both

The purpose of this study is to examine the evolution of six U.S. corporate logos--Apple, McDonald's, Nike, Pepsi, Shell, and Starbucks--from each logo's inception until the newest version of the graphic emblem today. The objective is to determine the meanings that logos have for a corporation's identity, mission, and relationships, as well as the messages that logos convey to viewers (i.e., mostly customers). By "evolution" of logos here, the researcher means "ongoing transformation" of logos. The semiotic model used in this analysis is Charles Sanders Peirce's (1958(1931)) semiotic framework. Peircean semiotics is made up of a three-part paradigm of signification: the representamen (or the sign itself), the object (or "referent"--what the sign refers to), and the interpretant (the effect on the viewer, or the viewer's interpretation). Based on the semiotic data on logo evolution, the researcher found six main themes that emerged across the analyses of U.S. corporate logos. These themes are (1) Direction toward the Future, (2) Identity with Viewers, (3) Instant Recognition and Distinctiveness, (4) Consistency throughout Evolution, (5) Invocation of Change, and (6) True Representation of Corporate Identity. The ultimate conclusion of this analysis is that the communicative intent of a company, through its logo, tends to take a long time to develop. A successful logo is one that portrays the true objectives and principles of a company. For this reason, the ideal identity of a corporation tends to be built over a long period of time, which makes logo improvement "evolutionary" in nature. In all six cases, communication plays a major part in logo improvement.

This thesis is a study of rhythm in Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent and some of its adaptations. The division in two parts reflects a twofold approach: Part I develops a theory of rhythm analysis based on narratological and semiotic methods, with varied examples drawn from several media; Part II discusses Conrad’s use of rhythmic and tensive devices and how they have been adapted in different media. Chapter 1 introduces the key concepts of Daniele Barbieri’s rhythm analysis, based on the notion of textual relief and the essential relationship between rhythm and tension. Section 1.3 elaborates on such method, adapting the theory of Possible Worlds and Greimasian semiotics to the identification of rhythmic and tensive structures; section 1.4 deals with issues of rhythm in adaptation, specifically with the notion of the ‘transcodic resistance’ of rhythm. Chapter 2 approaches rhythmic strategies from the recipient’s point of view, discussing cognitive responses to the textual structures outlined in Chapter 1; making use of cognitive narratology, the first three sections analyse the mechanisms of reception that interact with tension and rhythm – attention, immersion and suspense. The final section highlights interconnections between those three cognitive responses and their relationship with rhythmic devices, concluding the theoretical part. Chapter 3 is a thorough analysis of the rhythm of Conrad’s The Secret Agent, showing how the novel’s complex narrative structures contribute to the creation of a multi-layered rhythmic and tensive architecture. Finally, Chapter 4 deals with five of the numerous adaptations of the novel: Conrad’s theatrical version, John K. Snyder’s graphic novel, Hitchcock’s Sabotage, and two BBC TV series adaptations. The works analysed adapt the novel in several media with variable success, but they are all remarkable in their more or less effective transfer of the novel’s multifaceted rhythmic structure into the language and technical specificity of the different media involved.

This classroom ethnography documents the developing critical literacy pedagogy of an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instructor over the course of several terms. My research, which involved extensive collaboration with the EAP instructor, explores how specific classroom practices and discourses are enacted and mediated through dialogic intertextualities, material objects, and social actions that frame representations about language, literacy, and what Lefebvre (1988) called “le quotidien” – the everyday, and how these affect the students’ meaning-making potential in specific ways. It also traces the contours (and detours) of the instructor’s classroom practices after the researcher’s mediation in the form of collaborative inquiries on functional grammar and critical literacy, and the effects of these classroom practices on making meaning in her EAP classes. I consider several issues from an integrated theory and practice perspective. Because of an urgent need to understand the students’ practices and epistemologies as they engage in ever newer forms of multimodal text productions, I contend that EAP classroom practices must be reshaped to facilitate more (inter)active engagements of the multimodal texts that saturate students’ lives, both inside the class and outside. Related to this, I highlight in my classroom data what actually counts as the ‘critical’ or the ‘uncritical’ in this EAP classroom and argue why these distinctions matter. Lastly, I suggest ways in which the role of a critical multiliteracies education in EAP can meet the pragmatic needs of both students and teachers. My research contributes to a much-needed dialogue between critically oriented researchers and practitioners in the field of TESOL/Applied Linguistics by bridging the gap between theory and practice. The lessons learned from this collaborative classroom praxis point to concrete ways to help EAP teachers and students utilize their meaning-making potential. This involves equipping them with an expanded social semiotic tool-kit that can enable them to not only meet their immediate academic needs, but also help create a more active and possibly transformative role in the social constructions of discourse, language, and society. This doctoral dissertation has implications for those who are involved in EAP teaching and research, curriculum planning, teacher training, and student needs assessment.

Demonstrating how semiotic theory and method can be applied to decoding false representations and dangerous discourses, this book explores how semiotics can be used as a potentially powerful science of conscience. Confronting the sometimes negative perception of semiotics as academically inward-looking and lacking in morality, Marcel Danesi turns this view on its head. Instead, Danesi highlights how the same techniques that have allowed the use of semiotics for self-serving commercial purposes, such as advertising or marketing, could also be applied to deciphering current world problems. Through describing the semiotic notions and methods that can be used to analyze misrepresentations, propaganda, or meaning collapses, the book enables readers to become conscientiously aware of their hidden meanings and the harmful effects that they have on society. Identifying key issues of concern, such as climate change and anti-science discourses, it shows how they can be interpreted in terms of basic semiotic theory. This analysis of crucial issues demonstrates how semiotics can be used to raise awareness of critically important matters in modern society, and to encourage the development of more robust and ethical attitudes towards them.

Multimodality examines how language and other resources (e.g., images and gestures) are integrated to make meaning for communication. This chapter aims to introduce two approaches to multimodality from a systemic-functional semiotic perspective, namely social semiotics and systemic functional multimodal discourse analysis (SF-MDA), and discuss their applications in applied linguistics. Specifically, this chapter begins with an overview of the theoretical underpinnings of the two approaches, focusing on their shared functionalist origins and the origin’s theoretical and methodological implications. Next, the chapter discusses the affordance of social semiotics and SF-MDA and highlights data collection procedures and analytical processes in applied linguistic studies informed by the two approaches. Finally, critiques of the two approaches are addressed with multimodal research facilitated by eye-tracking technology.

This chapter builds on Chapter 4 and introduces two main applications within applied linguistics stemming from a systemic-functional semiotic theory of multimodality: embodied teaching and language textbook analysis. The chapter first gives a brief overview of the broader field of research that each of these applications is located in. Then each focal area is elaborated and illustrated via a case study conducted by the authors. Each case study provides a rationale for why multimodal analysis is appropriate given the research focus and questions, demonstrates how multimodal analysis was implemented and conducted, and reflects on the challenges of its implementation in applied linguistic research contexts.

This chapter explores the manipulation of discourse on Twitter at the basis of the climate lockdown conspiracy theory. By analysing a dataset of tweets supporting the existence of climate lockdowns, the chapter looks at how the categories traditionally employed to define manipulation in language are applied when manipulation takes place in digital discourse. The new media is characterised by the expansion and re-elaboration of the classic dynamics of textual production and interpretation, and this is particularly evident when digital and semiotic affordances are used to manipulate discourse. The analysis of the climate change conspiracy theory proves that the architecture and affordances of social media allow, or even encourage, or at least quietly endorse, the legitimation of discourse through manipulation, especially news discourse.

AbstractThe chapter is a theoretical discussion of the concept of personal repertoire and its application in the context of applied linguistics, particularly in the study of language learning and development. It questions conceptualisations that understand language learning as acquisition of abstract, decontextual and disembodied language knowledge and argues that learners’ know-how is not based on any kind of ‘mental grammar’, but on a personal repertoire of different multimodal semiotic resources. Bringing together ‘old’ and ‘new’ arguments for materialism, personal repertoires are examined focussing on how embodied agentive activity is intertwined with the socially structured environments and their specific material features, tools and artefacts. The repertoire, or the know-how that emerges, is not, strictly speaking, ‘language’, but rather, a meshwork of ‘skilled linguistic action’ in the analysis of which embodiment and materiality are highly significant considerations. The viewpoint transcends the alleged gap between social and cognitive orientations of language learning research and discusses learning and use of language from an ecological point of view as ‘languaging’.

This chapter is an attempt to understand human translation of cultural texts generated through human agency as a structural continuation of biotranslation prevalent in the natural world. It begins by analysing bee communication and orchid mimicry as examples of biotranslation located within the tripartite biosemiotic model of Carlo Brentari, following Jakob von Uexküll, and finally arrives at a method in translation studies that prioritises cooperative engagements through an inclusive theory of semiotic hospitality. For this, the model of the Samavasarana from Jain philosophy is applied, both because of its ecological expanse, and its structural affinity to Brentari’s biosemiotic model. Concluding Kierkegaard’s temporal realm of human concerns to be the reason for functional cleavage between the semiosphere from the biosphere, resetting that connection is the purpose of this article.

A unifying theme in the chapters in this volume is that semiotics offers important analytic tools for understanding the creation and reproduction of contextual meaning in social life (see Introduction). Consistent with this theme, my research program has centered on the semiotic distinction between the socially marked and the socially unmarked. I have employed these sensitizing analytic concepts to examine a range of issues, including sexual identity (Brekhus, 1996), theoretical attention in sociology (Brekhus, 1998, 2000), cognition (Brekhus, 2015; Brekhus and Ignatow, 2019), risk (Brekhus, 2018), and identity (Brekhus, 2020). Broadly speaking, I focus on identity, difference, cognition, and representation, with a particular interest in the ways that intersecting dimensions of markedness and unmarkedness shape cultural perception, worldviews, cognition, and the reproduction of social inequalities. The semiotic distinction between the marked and the unmarked was first introduced in the 1930s by linguists Trubetzkoy and Jakobson (see Jakobson, 1972; Trubetzkoy and Jakobson, 1975: 162). Linguist Linda Waugh (1982), in her article “Marked and Unmarked: A Choice between Unequals in Semiotic Structure,” developed the marked/unmarked distinction into a broader semiotic framework featuring semiotic pairs such as blackness/whiteness and homosexuality/heterosexuality, across different semiotic systems (see also Zerubavel, 2018, p. 2). Following the lead of Waugh, who argued that the same logic of the actively accented (marked) and the passively unacknowledged (unmarked) that applied to linguistic contrasts also applies to social contrasts, I have helped to import these concepts into the social sciences. In my own work, inspired by Waugh’s analysis, I first applied a semiotic markedness/unmarkedness analysis to sexual identity construction in the US (Brekhus, 1996), wherein I noted that some sexual behaviors and identities are marked as “deviant” and given special labels, while others remain unmarked, unaccented, and even unlabeled.

The poster as the genre of graphic arts is a medium where the representation of the human body functions as an important semiotic sign. This genre has also reflected and influenced the most diverse spectrum of artistic, social and political processes. In addition to informative and illustrative content, the inclusion of the human body in the composition of the poster has always had ideological purpose. The aim of this paper is to discuss how political ideology integrates the images of the human body in the posters and how it contradicts the individuals personal feelings and bodily experiences. The case study of two categories of posters from the Soviet period (1950s 1980s) indicates the ideological strategies of sports promotion posters and anti-alcoholism propaganda posters. Political propaganda posters, including sports posters, reveal the body politics of the communist ideology: to create a uniform, disciplined, desexualised, masculine bodies capable of embodying the image of the New Soviet Hero. I suggest that the main artistic tendencies of the so-called harsh or severe style that evolved in Latvian painting at the time can be seen in the sports posters of this period. Anti - alcoholism posters tend to employ a cartoon aesthetic. This tradition has its roots in the mass propaganda of the Russian Revolution (1917), which encouraged the emergence of extreme dichotomies in visual communication. These posters show the human body as a ridiculous and weak object that deserves to be condemned by family members, friends and all society. In this communication programme, alcoholism is not presented as a disease and a global problem of Soviet society, but as a bad choice of individuals. The research is based on archival studies of Soviet posters from the Institute of Art History of the Art Academy of Latvia. Complex research methods have been applied, including iconography, semiotics, contextual and comparative analysis.

Semiotics is the study of symbol systems, first proposed at the beginning of this century by the Swiss linguist Saussure, the American philosopher and founder of the philosophy of pragmatism Pierce. Semiotics is the study of the theory of symbols, and its scope of study involves the nature, characteristics, and meaning of the symbols of things, as well as the relationship between symbols and human beings. Design is a discipline closely related to "meaning", so the theory of semiotics is bound to have a strong guiding effect on design. Objectives This paper mainly researches the application of Semiotics in design by answering the following three questions: (1) Which countries and institutions are the application subjects of Semiotics in design? (2) What are the hotspot research topics of Semiotics in design? What are the future frontier trends? (3) What are the topics and paradigms of Semiotics in design high-impact literature research? Methods This paper uses the methods of bibliometrics and information visualization. To obtain more rigorous and comprehensive data indicators, VOS viewer and Cite Space (two pieces of bibliometric visualization software) were used to draw a map of scientific knowledge such as cooperative countries co-occurrence network, keywords co-occurrence clustering network and reference co-citation clustering network so as to conduct an empirical analysis on the retrieved data. In this paper, the Web of Science database is selected to retrieve the journal and paper data related to Design semiotics. In order to ensure the authority and research value of literature data, only SCI, SSCI and A&HCI were selected as the search source, with (Topic= (" semiotics ") AND Title= ("design")) as the search criteria and an unlimited time span. Finally, 407 retrieved papers published from 2000 to 2023 were exported as TXT files in the format of "fully recorded and cited references" to generate a visual knowledge map for quantitative analysis. Results (1) The output of papers related to design semiotics is generally on the rise, with the main output countries are China, Brazil, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Australia. Among them, China has the largest share of relevant research volume, indicating that China attaches great importance to research in this field and has a wide range of application areas. In addition, Research related to design semiotics is distributed, i.e. many schools and organizations are doing related research, but there are no very prominent institutions yet. (2) Nowadays, the research hotspots of Design semiotics include Computer Science, Engineering, Education Educational Research, Social Sciences, Business Economics, etc., which are mainly applied to "Provide a semiotic methodology primarily for problem solving", thus demonstrating its theoretical value. We can see that the combination of design semiotics with other approaches mainly involves sensory experience and cognitive science, user interface design, affective design and psychology, making design semiotics an interdisciplinary property.(3) At present, a bulk of influential and highly-cited literature on Design semiotics has been generated. For example, some literature has examined Gender and design cultures in information and communication technologies. Some literature has examined the Semiotic Approach to Information Systems Design. They constitute the classic cases and knowledge base of the application of Design semiotics and provide a research basis for the subsequent application of Design semiotics.

Semiotic analysis serves as a tool for comprehending the ways in which individuals interpret and comprehend their surroundings by scrutinizing the interplay between signs, symbols, and their connotations. The efficacy of digital business platforms is heavily reliant on the creation of well-crafted, meticulously structured websites that facilitate effective communication with targeted customers. E-commerce websites extensively employ images and texts to enhance product awareness and cultural significance. Scholars contend that the utilization of e-commerce websites will expand if designers integrate the cultural norms of different user subsets. Thus, this study aimed to examine this issue through a literature review of semiotic analysis applied to e-commerce websites.

We address problems that arise in teaching statistics in non-statistical degree courses in statistics. The typical student reveals basic difficulties in the understanding of the key concepts. This paper describes experiences with the “project method”, motivating students with real data from the future profession. The project method generated collaborative learning and social interaction between groups by embedding learning statistics in the context of applied problems in the form of projects. Godino’s semiotic ontological framework provides elements of his model of the instructional process and a didactic trajectory in his first exploratory phase of execution, as well as exposing the linguistic, situational, actuative, conceptual, propositional, and argumentative elements that are relevant in understanding a particular topic. Due to its relative success in our classes and a theoretical analysis, we propose the project method for teaching statistics, especially for hybrid courses where face-to-face is combined with virtual parts of knowledge acquisition.

On the basis of an interdisciplinary synthesis of historiography and semiotics, the article proposes a new way of analysing the conceptions of historians, who studied the war between the Moscow state and the Commonwealth in the middle of the XVII century. The attention is paid not to the search for genetic links and biographical pages in the writings of researchers working in the same era. But discovery is presented of the speech units that affect the production of discourses that add up specific narratives. The author seeks to trace the processes of convergence or estrangement of scientific ideas with/from the state request, which was delivered after the January uprising of 1863–1864 in the provinces of the Kingdom of Poland (Congress Poland) and the Northwest Krai. Therefore, the aim of the study is to verify the author's vision of the usefulness and complementarity of the semiotic understanding of the interaction of the text and its creator with the history of ideas. Such understanding is a significant part of the process of historiographic accumulation of information. Concretely, the author applies this synthesis to the micro level, i. e., to the stage of specific historical research.
