AbstractThis article alleges that two letters attributed to the philosopher David Hume (1711–1776) were forged in the twentieth century. The letters were first published in 1972 and 1973 by Michael Morrisroe, an assistant professor of English in the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle, after which they became monuments of conventional scholarship on Hume's life and writings. Both letters are cited without qualification by scholars of Hume's thought in dozens of publications, including Ernest Campbell Mossner's celebrated Life of David Hume (1980), and John Robertson's entry for Hume in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (2004). This article reconstructs the history and transmission of Hume's extant letters and attempts to account for why the forgeries published by Morrisroe were accepted as genuine. It makes a systematic case against the authenticity of the letters, and focuses in particular on the question of whether Hume met the Jansenist homme de lettres Noël-Antoine Pluche (1688–1761) and had access to his library, in Reims, in 1734. The article concludes with a discussion of the implications of the exposé for modern editorial scholarship and intellectual history.

RESUME Bien que le terme 'sociolinguistics' n'ait ete introduit dans le vocabulai-re technique de la linguistique qu'en 1952 par Haver Currie et que la socio-linguistique ne soit devenue une sous-discipline importante de la science du langage que depuis les annees soixante (v. Bright 1966), cet article main-tient qu'une telle approche du langage existait depuis longtemps, peut-etre plus de cent ans. En d'autres mots, nous avangons qu'il y avait une sociolin-guistique bien avant la lettre. En effet, on retrouve dans la linguistique generate de Wiliam Dwight Whitney (1827-1894) et de Heymann Steinthal (1823-1899) et dans quel-ques articles de Michel Breal (1832-1915) des annees 60 et 70 du siecle dernier des observations qui mettent en relief la nature sociale du langage. Les dialectologues de la meme periode, surtout en France et dans les pays de langue allemande, etaient tout a fait conscients du fait que l'etude des patois, des parlers et des langues orales en general devait etre guidee par des considerations sociologiques (v. Malkiel 1976). Dans la linguistique compa-ree et historique c'est Antoine Meillet (1866-1936), eleve de Saussure et de Breal et collaborates de la revue d'Emile Durkheim, Vannee sociologique, au debut de notre siecle, qui a insiste sur l'importance de l'aspect social (et sociologique) dans l'etude du changement linguistique (par ex., Meillet 1905). Avec ses eleves de Paris, surtout Joseph Vendryes (1875-1960), Alf Sommerfelt (1892-1965) et Marcel Cohen (1884-1974), Meillet etablit l'ecole sociologique du langage (par ex., Vendryes 1921; Sommerfelt 1932; Cohen 1956). Enfin, il existe — a cote de la dialectologie et de l'histoire des langues — encore une troisieme source de la sociolinguistique: l'etude du bilinguisme (par ex., Max Weinreich 1931; Haugen 1953). Ces trois traditions de la recherche linguistique se trouvent toutes reunis dans l'etude de Uriel Weinreich (1926-1967), Languages in Contact (1953), et puisque l'ouvrage de William Labov de 1966, The Social Stratification of English in New York City, qui est souvent cite (bien a tort) comme point de depart de la sociolo-gie moderne, representait sa these de doctorate ecrite sous la direction de Weinreich, il n'est pas etonnant de voir ces traditions, surtout celles de la linguistique geographique et de la linguistique historique, maintenues dans l'oeuvre de Labov (par ex., 1976, 1982). SUMMARY Although the term 'sociolinguistics' was not introduced into linguistic nomenclature before 1952 (see Currie 1952) and the field became a recognized field of research in the late 1960s only (e.g., Bright 1966), it is clear that the subject did not begin two decades ago. Indeed, an investigation into the sources of 'sociolinguistics' reveals that its beginnings go back at least 100 years, to the work of William Dwight Whitney (1827-1894), Heymann Steinthal (1823-1899), Michel Breal (1832-1915), and others. However, these were the first programmatic statements and a number of developments in the study of language were necessary to converge upon the kind of sociolinguistics which most students of language associate with the name of William Labov (e.g., Labov 1966), at least in North America. Interestingly enough, it is also in the work of Labov (e.g., 1972) that the origins of 'sociolinguistics' (to some extent in contradistinction to the 'sociology of language' approach associated with Basil Bernstein, Joshua A. Fishman, and others) could be traced, although neither Labov nor the prolific Dell Hymes has written anything on the history of sociolinguistics. (Indeed, the only paper that comes close to it was written by an outsider to the field, the great Romance scholar Yakov Malkiel, in 1976.) In my paper, I shall demonstrate that there are essentially three major traditions of investigation that led to 'sociolinguistics', namely, (1) Dialectology, especially the work done in German-speaking lands and in France from the 1870s onwards (e.g., Georg Wenker [1852-1911], Jules Gillieron [1854-1926], and others) — part of which had been undertaken in an effort to verify and possibility to support the neogrammarian 'regularity hypothesis' of sound changes; (2) Historical Linguistics, in particular the kind advocated by Antoine Meillet (1866-1936) and his school (e.g., Meillet 1905; Vendryes 1921), which developed into a 'science sociologique' of linguistics in general (Sommerfelt 1932) and a 'sociologie du langage' (e.g., Cohen 1956) among the younger Meillet disciples, and (3) Bilingualism Studies (e.g., Max Weinreich 1931; Haugen 1953), traditions all of which can be found united in the 1953 study of Uriel Weinreich (1926-1967), who happens to have been Labov's teacher and mentor.

According to historian Antoine Prost, education in France is marked by two periods of profound reform. The first (1880-1902) occurred during the Third Republic and the second (1960-1985) was set in motion under de Gaulle. From an architectural point of view, the former gave rise to the Jules Ferry school, while the latter sought to introduce the English open-space school model into France. Taking the example of the École Saint-Merri, built in Paris between 1971 and 1973, this article examines the impact of this second reform from an architectural point of view.

ABSTRACT We have characterized an early series of 5,6-bridged dioxinoquinolones which behaved strikingly different from typical quinolones. The 5,6-bridged dioxinoquinolones inhibited Escherichia coli DNA gyrase supercoiling activity but, unlike typical quinolones, failed to stimulate gyrase-dependent cleavable complex formation. Analogous unsubstituted compounds stimulated cleavable complex formation but were considerably less potent than the corresponding 5,6-bridged compounds. Consistent with a previous report (M. Antoine et al., Chim. Ther. 7:434-443, 1972) and contrary to established quinolone SAR trends, a compound with an N-1 methyl substitution (PGE-8367769) was more potent than its analog with an N-1 ethyl substitution (PGE-6596491). PGE-8367769 was shown to antagonize ciprofloxacin-mediated cleavable complex formation in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting an interaction with the gyrase-DNA complex that overlaps that of ciprofloxacin. Resistance to PGE-8367769 in E. coli was found to arise through missense mutations in gyrA, implicating DNA gyrase as the primary antibacterial target. Notably, only 1 of 15 distinct mutations selected on PGE-8367769 (D87G) has previously been implicated in quinolone resistance in E. coli. The remaining 14 mutations (E16V, G31V, R38L, G40A, Y50D, V70A, A84V, I89L, M135T, G173S, T180I, F217C, P218T, and F513C) have not been previously reported, and most were located outside of the traditional quinolone resistance-determining region. These novel GyrA mutations decreased sensitivity to 5,6-bridged dioxinoquinolones by four- to eightfold, whereas they did not confer resistance to other quinolones such as ciprofloxacin, clinafloxacin, or nalidixic acid. These results demonstrate that the 5,6-bridged quinolones act via a mechanism that is related to but qualitatively different from that of typical quinolones.

Resumo O objetivo do artigo é situar e examinar a suposta inflexão de maior radicalização política na trajetória intelectual de Antonio Candido ocorrida na passagem da década de 1960 para 1970. Busca-se explicar a gênese e compreender o significado dessa radicalização, que teria se manifestado na produção intelectual do crítico no período, como, por exemplo, nos ensaios “Dialética da malandragem” (1970), “Literatura e subdesenvolvimento” (1970) e “De cortiço a cortiço” (1973). Nesse sentido, o artigo reconstrói brevemente a trajetória global de Candido, discute os principais condicionantes das suas ideias na época e sugere uma interpretação sobre o significado “radical” dessas ideias, tal como aparecem nos ensaios acima mencionados.

RESUMO Este ensaio visa apresentar aspectos relevantes do tempo que o tradutor francês e teórico da tradução Antoine Berman experimentou na América Latina (1970 a 1975, mais ou menos), especialmente no contexto da Argentina. Partindo disso, tentaremos demonstrar que essa experiência e a experiência de traduzir a literatura latino-americana, quando em diálogo com as reflexões de poetas e pensadores da primeira geração do romantismo alemão, o levarão à elaboração de uma ética da tradução, que, por sua vez, terá um impacto decisivo no modo como Berman entende a prática da tradução e as questões sócio-políticas e culturais que essa prática pode suscitar e provocar no contexto francês.

Species of the genus Helopelius Reitter, 1922 (type species: Stenomax aeneipennis Allard, 1876) were known from Rhodes and North Africa. We found that two species described from Rhodes belong to the genus Stenohelops Reitter, 1922, and Helopelius can be interpreted as a subgenus within latter, guided by the article 23.2 of ICZN. The following synonyms are proposed: Helopelius, stat. n. (from genus to subgenus) = Stenomaleis Español, 1957, syn. n.; Stenohelops Reitter, 1922 = Gunarellus Reitter, 1922, syn. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) aeneipennis (Allard, 1876) = Helopelius disgregus Reitter, 1922, syn. n., = Gunarus gayirbegi Nabozhenko & Keskin, 2009, syn. n. As a result, the following species are transferred from the former genus Helopelius to the genus Stenohelops: Stenohelops (Helopelius) nodifer (Kraatz, 1880), comb. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) otini (Antoine, 1949), comb. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) subsinuatus (Antoine, 1951), comb. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) verrucosus (Vauloger de Beaupré, 1900), comb. n.; Stenohelops (Helopelius) zaianus (Antoine, 1949), comb. n. Thus, the subgenus Helopelius contains 11 species from three isolated geographical exclaves: Western Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean and China. Lectotypes of Stenomax aeneipennis Allard, 1876, Helops gratus J. Frivaldszky, 1894 and Cylindrinotus (Helopelius) disgregus Reitter, 1922 are designated. Data on fossil species of the genus and the allied extinct taxa, as well as on bionomics of extant species of the subgenus Helopelius are presented. The check-list for extant and extinct species of Stenohelops is given.

No filme Vous n’avez encore rien vu (2012), Alain Resnais volta-se para a literatura dramática, transpondo as peças Cher Antoine ou l’Amour raté (1969) e Eurydice (1942), de Jean Anouilh, para o universo cinematográfico. Neste sentido, o cineasta promove um diálogo intermediático entre a linguagem cênica e a linguagem cinematográfica, teatralizando o cinema. Dentro deste âmbito, este trabalho estuda a intermedialidade em Vous n’avez encore rien vu e a teatralidade no filme de Resnais.In the film Vous n’avez encore rien vu (2012), Alain Resnais turns to the dramatic literature, transposing Jean Anouilh’s plays Cher Antoine ou l’Amour raté (1969) and Eurydice (1942) to the cinematographic universe. In such context, this work studies the intermediality in Vous n’avez encore rien vu through the analysis of Anouilh’s scenery in Resnai’s film.

O artigo aborda a tradição do som direto no cinema francês a partir de análise de caso do filme Femmes, femmes (1974). O filme de Paul Vecchiali conta com a presença do técnico de som Antoine Bonfanti, parceiro constante nas produções do cineasta francês e um dos principais nomes da moderna escola francesa de som direto que se inicia no início dos anos 1960. Em Femmes, femmes temos um exemplo bastante original do uso do som direto como principal elemento no tratamento sonoro assumido com todas as suas imperfeições e ruídos. Ao voltarmos nosso foco para o trabalho de Antoine Bonfanti, procuramos destacar a importância do técnico de som entendido também como um profissional de criação.

The Holarctic weevil genus Procas Stephens, 1831 is revised for the first time. Six species are recognized: four in the western Palaearctic Region, one in the eastern Palaearctic Region and one in the Nearctic Region. One new species, P. michaelis, sp. n. is described from Spain and one new subspecies, P. picipes levantinus, ssp. n. is described from the Levant. P. picipes (Marsham, 1802), sp. rev. and P. p. steveni (Gyllenhal, 1835), ssp. rev. are released from synonymy with P. armillatus (Fabricius, 1801). The species are separated using, among others, characters derived from sternite 8 of the male which is here used at species level for the first time. Related genera are discussed. Cet article se propose d’étudier la relation particulière qu’Antoine Vitez entretient avec l’Électre de Sophocle. À trois reprises, en 1966, en 1971 et en 1986, il traduisit et mit en scène cette pièce différemment. Vitez distingue dans l’œuvre de Sophocle deux niveaux de lecture, celle du fait divers, la pauvre fille, pleurant sur son père assassiné et appelant son frère à la vengeance contre leur mère et son amant, et sa valeur allégorique, l’insoumission face à l’usurpation, la résistance à la tyrannie. Ces trois mises en scène sont intrinsèquement liées. Elles matérialisent la tension qui définit pour Vitez l’art théâtral, cette polarité du mythe, entre l’universel et le particulier, porteur à la fois du passé, du présent et de l’avenir. Le théâtre est le lieu de la contradiction. À travers cette tension permanente, Vitez met en scène sa propre réflexion critique.

A new ascidian species belonging to the Botryllinae was discovered in the Gulf of Taranto (South Italy). This new species wascollected in different seasons over a period of several years, which allowed information about its biology to be obtained. Thenew species presents large zooids arranged in ladder systems. The zooids have several rows of stigmata, the second one com-plete, ovary posterior to testis, one larva per side developing in an incubatory pouch, and a peculiar arrangement of the gut loop. The new species is named Botrylloides pizoni after the great French zoologist Antoine Pizon (1860–1942).

Motuotrichius yangi, new genus, new species is described from Motuo, southeastern Tibet. Motuotrichius seems to have a mixture of characters observed in the genera Epitrichius Tagawa, 1941, Indotrichius Krikken, 2009, Lasiotrichius Reitter, 1899, and Trichius Fabricius, 1775, but is separable from all the known Eurasian genera of Trichiina by the presence of a tooth on the inner side of the mesotibia in both sexes. The habitus, external characters, and male genitalia of Motuotrichius yangi are illustrated. The following new combinations are given: Gnorimotrichius albomaculatus (Moser, 1902), Gnorimotrichius signatus (Chûjô, 1940), Gnorimotrichius trilineatus (Ma, 1992), and Gnorimotrichius tronqueti (Antoine, 2002).

Tribe Vaccinieae Reichenbach with more than 800 species contains most of the neotropical taxa of Ericaceae Jussieu (Pedraza-Peñalosa 2015a: 35). Species of genus Vaccinium Linneaus (1753: 349) known as blueberries or mortiños in Spanish, are members of Vaccinieae well-known for their economic importance (Pedraza-Peñalosa 2015b: 100). The genus Ceratostema Jussieu (1789: 163) was created by Antoine Jussieu and Ceratostema peruvianum Gmelin (1791: 676) was designated as the type species (Luteyn 1986: 485). It was first treated by Smith in 1952, who published a brief description and an artificial key, recognizing 16 species at that time (Smith 1952). Luteyn (1986) reviewed the genus and provided an updated artificial key to 23 species, including three new ones. Subsequently, a new species from Peru was added and thirteen more from Ecuador were included in the genus (Luteyn 1992, 1996, 2005).

Large-scale rescue excavation beyond the guardianship area around the Roman fort on the Antonine Wall at Croy Hill (NGR: NS 7335 7652) was undertaken over four summers (1975–8), funded by a predecessor to Historic Environment Scotland. The aims of the excavation were to identify any potential civil settlement associated with the fort and to confirm the character and date of a pre-fort enclosure identified by Sir George Macdonald in the 1930s. The latter proved to be a camp associated with the building of the Antonine Wall, not an earlier Flavian fort as previously postulated. A civil settlement was shown to lie within the guardianship area on a plateau immediately to the west of the fort, though only one timber structure extended into the excavated area. However, a curvilinear trackway wound its way down the hill from the settlement towards a southern road that bypassed the fort. The trackway was defined by substantial ditches that contained a large quantity and wide variety of artefactual material washed down from the settlement, predominantly after its abandonment. The bypass road, which showed signs of at least two phases of construction, was traced for a distance of some 275m. The area on either side of it to the east of the fort was divided up by a system of fence lines and ditches into fields or compounds, one of which contained a pottery kiln, another a cremation burial. Field observation during the excavation led to the suggestion that a fortlet lay some 80m west of the fort. This was confirmed by limited excavation within the guardianship area. The construction of the fortlet was shown to have been contemporary with the Antonine Wall.

Abstract Background: Loss-of-function (LOF) alterations of the PTCH1 tumor suppressor gene represent canonical events involved in basal cell carcinoma (BCC) oncogenesis. Hedgehog pathway inhibitors (HPIs) are approved for the treatment of advanced BCC, but genomic characterization and therapeutic outcomes remain limited in tumor agnostic cohorts. Methods: Using the MSK Clinical Sequencing Cohort, we performed a mutational landscape analysis of PTCH1 LOF alterations in non-BCC histologies, including Fraction and Allele-Specific Copy Number Estimates from Tumor Sequencing (FACETS) annotation, and analyzed response and progression-free survival (PFS) with HPIs. Results: Out of 115,619 samples, 1972 samples from advanced solid tumors with PTCH1 LOF alterations were identified. Excluding 1306 variants of unknown significance (VUSs) using OncoKB knowledge base as well as 44 BCC samples, a total of 622 samples from 570 patients with oncogenic PTCH1 alterations were identified across histologies. In addition, 124 patients received ≥1 line(s) of HPI at our institution between 2013 and 2023, including 16 patients with non-BCC histologies presenting PTCH1 alterations. At the patient level (n=570), PTCH1 LOF alterations were present across 33 primary sites, including colorectal cancer (CRC; 34%; n=192), endometrial cancer (17%; n=98), gastroesophageal adenocarcinomas (ADC) (8%; n=46), non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC; 6%; n=34) and soft tissue sarcomas (STS; 4%; n=25). At the sample level (n=622), TMB ≥10 was seen in 83% (n=516), including 324 samples with MSI-high status. PTCH1 alterations most frequently involved frameshift (fs) indels (69%; n=429), followed by nonsense mutations (18%; n=114), splice site mutations (8%; n=47) and fusions (5%; n=32). Recurrent fs events involved S1203Afs*52 (24%; n=150) and R1308Efs*64 (14%; n=89), among others. When comparing monoallelic (monoall) vs biallelic (biall) PTCH1 alterations through FACETS annotation, monoall showed a strong association with higher TMB (p<0.01) whereas biall were associated with higher loss of heterozygosity (LOH; p<0.01). In the 16 non-BCC patients treated with HPIs, histologies included lung squamous cell cancer (SCC; n=4), cutaneous SCC (n=2), medulloblastoma (n=2), carcinosarcoma (n=2), osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, chordoma, sebaceous ADC, anal SCC and CRC (each n=1). TMB ≥10 was seen in 31% (n=5), all of which were MSI-low. Tumor regressions on HPI were seen in 50% (n=8), including lung SCC, cutaneous SCC, sebaceous ADC and medulloblastoma, with median time to response of 3.6 months (mo). Median PFS on HPI was 3.9 mo and median OS was 22.7 mo. Median PFS was higher in patients with TMB ≥10 vs TMB <10 (11.8 vs. 1.8 mo, p=0.02). Conclusion: PTCH1 LOF alterations appear actionable in non-BCC cutaneous/adnexal primaries, lung SCC and medulloblastoma, including TMB-high tumors. RÉSUMÉ Les phases d'activité littorale dans un site de la rive sud du Saint-Laurent ont été étudiées à l'aide de la dendrochronologie. L'analyse des dates de formation de bois de réaction chez les arbres déstabilisés sous l'effet de décrochements mineurs survenus au pied des versants forestiers a permis d'établir le cadre spatio-temporel de la reprise d'érosion associée aux débordements récents du fleuve. Deux périodes de hauts niveaux de l'eau semblent avoir particulièrement marqué révolution des rives, les décennies 1920 et 1970, au cours desquelles une régression des franges forestières se serait produite en raison d'une érosion accrue. Lors des périodes intercalaires de bas niveaux, soit autour de la décennie 1910 et de 1930 à 1950, la forêt se serait rapprochée du fleuve en colonisant les sédiments de plage. Depuis 1970, l'amplitude et la fréquence des débordements ont considérablement augmenté. Ce changement de régime du fleuve implique de fréquents débordements d'hiver associés aux variations des conditions pluvio-thermiques, aux ouvrages de rétention des grands lacs et au contrôle de débit par des barrages. Les débordements hivernaux contribuent à favoriser une forte activité glacielle sur le littoral.

Entre as valiosas contribuições do tradutor e teórico Antoine Berman (1942-1991) para os Estudos da Tradução — a julgar pelos desdobramentos de discussões que já duram três décadas — está, sem dúvida, o ensaio “La retraduction comme espace de la traduction” (1990). A vivacidade no debate desencadeado pelas concepções ali expostas se comprova em diversos pesquisadores, numa extensa trajetória. Publicam-se, entre os primeiros anos após o ensaio e a segunda década do séc. XXI, além de numerosos artigos em periódicos de relevo, volumes inteiros voltados à discussão do fenômeno da retradução literária estabelecendo em algum momento, quase invariavelmente, relação com ideias daquele ensaio seminal. Nem sempre remetem precisamente à concepção bermaniana de ética; é certo, porém — como se visa a demonstrar aqui —, que em muitos casos ela está subjacente e instiga novos desdobramentos teóricos.

Arthur Barnett Spingarn (1878–1971) was a Jewish American lawyer who during the early twentieth century built an extensive personal library of books by authors of African descent. In 1937, Spingarn delivered a speech in Washington, DC entitled ‘Collecting a Library of Negro Literature’, which sought to expand his audience’s understanding of black literature beyond the United States. The following year, Spingarn’s address was published in anonymous French translation by the Haitian literary and political journal La Relève (1932–1939). This article is an enquiry into how this translation, entitled ‘Pour constituer une “Bibliothèque de Littérature Nègre”’, was used by editors Jacques Carméleau Antoine, Jean Fouchard, and Jules Blanchet to feed into the cultural debates taking place in Haiti during the 1930s. I focus on two key aspects of Spingarn’s text: firstly, his vision for a transnational and transhistorical ‘bibliothèque de littérature nègre’, the broad scope of which corresponded to two related, yet ultimately divergent, cultural ideologies prevalent in post-occupation Haiti, namely, the cultural syncretism of the Indigenists and the ethno-nationalism of the Noirists. Secondly, I assess Spingarn’s schema for the individuals involved in building an archive of black literature, revealing parallel ‘bourgeois public literary spheres’ (Stieber, 2020, p. 13) in Haiti and the United States. The inter-American trajectory of Spingarn’s address reveals a transatlantic interest in collecting practices associated with black literature. A close reading of its republication in La Rèleve offers new directions for French postcolonial studies by demonstrating the value of periodicals as literary sites which juxtapose competing cultural visions and raise important questions regarding the collection and commodification of Africana.

Uma das marcas estilísticas de Quevedo em suas narrativas satíricas do século XVII são os jogos de palavras, irônica e humoristicamente provocativos, fundados na multiplicidade de significados de uma palavra (polissemia), o que provoca, de maneira mais ou menos explícita, o riso do leitor. Assim, nesse artigo são analisados comparativamente os recursos aplicados para as polissemias em três traduções dos Sueños, uma para o português do Brasil, realizada por Liliana Raquel Chwat (2006), uma para o inglês, com autoria de Wallace Woolsey (1976), e, finalmente, uma para o francês, elaborada por Annick Louis e Bernard Tissier (2003). Анотація:

El reconocimiento de la traductología como ciencia a partir de la década de 1970 ha contribuido para que los planteles educativos consagren espacios para la investigación en la materia y el ejercicio de la traducción se profesionalice. El propósito de este artículo es analizar, a la luz de la metodología propuesta por Antoine Berman, las traducciones de Rosario Castellanos y Miguel Ángel Flores del poema de Paul Claudel “L’esprit et l’eau”, contenido en la obra Cinq grandes odes: suivies d’un processionnal pour saluer le siècle nouveau (1936). La confrontación presenta dos maneras de abordar la traducción poética. El análisis se basa en tres dimensiones: posición, proyecto y horizonte del traductor. Dicha confrontación pretende extraer las soluciones aportadas por cada uno de los traductores, la primera sin formación en traductología, el segundo, con amplio conocimiento de los estudios de traducción.

Summary Excavation of this Antonine Wall fort, previously explored by Sir George Macdonald and Mr Alexander Park in 1902-05, has exposed the bathhouse and headquarters building (principia) for permanent public view. The sequence of rooms in the bathhouse is now better understood; set into one wall of its main furnace was a small pottery kiln, from which came some 900 sherds in a distinctive fabric, showing strong influences from N Africa. In the headquarters building, a dais was recognised at the SW corner of the crosshall, and a strongbox in the floor of a room in the rear range. In a secondary phase the W half of the courtyard was converted to house a timber-framed storebuilding. The defences and part of the interior of the underlying ‘fortlet’ were examined; its clay rampart was located, and several possible cooking areas. Most probably, despite the recovery of some native finds, the ‘fortlet’ should be seen as a Roman labour-camp associated with the building of the Antonine Wall hereabouts. From its ditch came hawthorn twigs and branches, which along with blocks of turf had served to pack the ditch when the fort was built on top.

O propósito do presente artigo é problematizar as definições correntes de retradução, através da discussão de um de seus aspectos constituintes: a limitação à mesma língua-meta para a qual determinado texto-fonte já foi traduzido. O que justifica o presente artigo é a falta de discussão teórica acerca das definições de retradução em trabalhos acadêmicos. A maioria dos estudos as toma como certas e evita a necessidade de se escapar à fascinante estabilidade que as marca. Nossa visão é a de que a retraducão também ocorre fora dos limites estabelecidos por uma única língua-meta, e, devido a isso, deve ser tratada como um conceito multilíngue. Ilustraremos nossa visão com posições teóricas, especialmente as de Antoine Berman, e com exemplos de retraduções de duas obras literárias de James Joyce (1882-1941): Dubliners [Dublinenses] (1914) e Ulysses (1922) para o francês, o alemão, o italiano, o português e o espanhol.

Анотація:

In 1969, Dino Buzzati published his Poema a fumetti, a sui generis book, whose nature lies mid-way between the illustrated poems and comic strips genres, and in which the artist provides us with a updated myth of Orpheus that has been altered by the sixties (1960s)’ contemporaneousness. Two French language translations of Poema a fumetti will consecutively be written : the first one was performed by Max Gallo and Antoine Ottavi and was published a year only after the publication of the original Italian language book at Laffont. It was entitled Poème-bulles (1970). Another translation was thereafter done by Charlotte Lataillade and published by Actes Sud, and was entitled Orfi aux enfers (2007). The analysis of the incipit highlights the translator’s will to elucidate and clarify which erases the effects of suspension creating mystery around the introductory place from which begins Orfi’s wandering through all the poem.

Cet article fait état de la place qu’occupe l’institutionnalisation dans les stratégies de contrôle de la délinquance juvénile au Québec entre les années 1869 et 1950. La décision de confier la gestion du réseau d’écoles de réforme et d’écoles d’industrie à des communautés religieuses dont le personnel est nombreux et peu coûteux s’avère profitable dans le contexte de la naissance de la Confédération et permet à la province de se placer à l’avant-garde canadienne en cette matière. La situation s’inverse au tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles, les législateurs québécois ne suivant que très lentement la tendance nord-américaine d’établir des tribunaux pour mineurs permettant l’implantation de mesures en milieu ouvert (probation, familles d’accueil, etc.). L’exemple de l’Institut Saint-Antoine pour garçons délinquants illustre cette évolution. Alors que l’école de réforme de Montréal est, lors de son ouverture, en phase avec la modernité des méthodes institutionnelles relatives aux mineurs, elle semble peu préparée au changement d’orientation du système de justice des mineurs institué par l’ouverture de la Cour des jeunes délinquants de Montréal en 1912.

El objetivo de este trabajo es visibilizar la relevancia de uno de los personajes que fueron víctimas del exilio científico tras la guerra civil española. Se trata de Antonio Chamorro Daza (Huesa, Jaén, 1903-Banyoles, Girona, 2003), un Profesor Ayudante de Clases prácticas de la Facultad de Medicina de Granada que, sorprendido en Berlín por la sublevación militar, posteriormente fue juzgado por el Tribunal para la Represión de la Masonería y el Comunismo e inhabilitado para el ejercicio profesional en España. Como refugiado político en París, formó parte de una élite de investigadores que volcaron sus esfuerzos en la investigación experimental sobre el origen hormonal del cáncer de mama, basándose en la llamada medicina de laboratorio, con notables hallazgos, reconocidos en el gran número de publicaciones en las que se les tuvo en cuenta. El grupo de trabajo estuvo dirigido por el médico francés Antoine Lacassagne, quien influyó decisivamente en el porvenir de Antonio Chamorro.

Résumé Il faut s’en remettre à l’évidence, le domaine de la théorie du théâtre souffre de plusieurs maux. Le premier tient à la nature même de la théorie qui a connu au cours des années 1990 un recul certain, résultat sans doute du ressac qui a accompagné la fin des discours dominants au centre de la réflexion des années 1960 et 1970. Le second tient au soupçon généralisé et toujours actuel qui affecte toute approche théorique dès lors que celle-ci prend pour champ d’application la création artistique. Cette rupture radicale peut-elle s’expliquer et, plus encore, peut-elle se dépasser? Ce texte tente un tel rapprochement en posant comme hypothèse que la réflexion théorique et la création artistique portent en leur coeur un même principe de fonctionnement : ils traduisent le monde. Vaste principe à partir duquel Antoine Vitez voit le travail du metteur en scène et que cet article applique aussi par analogie au domaine de la théorie.

Анотація:

Las novelas paradigmáticas de la modernidad literaria À la recherche du temps perdu (1913-1927), de Marcel Proust, y Adán Buenosayres (1948), de Leopoldo Marechal, ostentan una contradicción fundamental en la que a la vez se basan: la simultánea tradicionalidad de su teoría y búsqueda estética y la modernidad de su escritura. Defienden una poética que su propia escritura supera y buscan el retorno a una obra clásica como reflejo de una totalidad que la realidad (ya) no ofrece. Con Antoine Compagnon, pueden ser considerados antimodernos, ultramodernos o modernos ‘a su pesar’. En el análisis comparativo de las dos novelas que propongo, me concentro en la teoría de la metáfora discutida explícitamente y desvirtuada prácticamente en los textos: por la técnica metonímica, en el caso de Proust, y por la alegoría, en el de Marechal. Termino el análisis con una comparación esbozada de las oberturas de la Recherche y de Adán Buenosayres, para así ejemplificar las posiciones antes discutidas teóricamente.

Анотація:

Este artigo expõe uma reflexão pessoal sobre o processo tradutório do conto “Darle vueltas a una ceiba”, do escritor cubano Guillermo Cabrera Infante. Com uma linguagem pautada na oralidade, o relato concebe uma Havana quase pitoresca, com suas ruas, sua gente, costumes e crenças. Partindo da ideia de que traduzir significa desempenhar uma atividade ética, estética e experimental, as reflexões apresentadas neste texto discorrem sobre a experiência da própria autora quanto às estratégias de tradução adotadas, especialmente no que concerne ao contexto cultural e à linguagem do conto, que oscila entre vernácula, coloquial, burlesca e irônica. As apreciações conceituais se respaldam, sobretudo, em três eixos teóricos fundamentais para a teoria da tradução literária: a tradução criativa ou transcriação, conforme proposta por Haroldo de Campos (1962), a hospitalidade linguística, nos termos de Paul Ricoeur e Antoine Berman, e a ideia de lealdade/fidelidade, tratada amplamente por distintos pensadores da tradução, entre os quais Humberto Eco.
