Jan Reisner (ca. 1655-1713) was a painter and architect. He was sent by King Jan III together with Jerzy Siemiginowski to study art at St. Luke Academy in Rome. He traveled to the Eternal City (where he arrived on February 24, 1678) with Prince Michał Radziwiłł’s retinue. Cardinal Carlo Barberini, who later became the protector of Regni Poloniae, was the guardian and protector of the artist during his studies in 1678-1682. In the architectural competition announced by the Academy in 1681 Reisner was awarded the fi prize in the fi class, and a little later he was accepted as a member of this prestigious university. He was awarded the Order of the Golden Spur (Aureatae Militiae Eques) and the title Aulae Lateranensis Comes, which was equivalent to becoming a nobleman. The architectural award was conferred by the jury of Concorso Academico, composed of the Academy’s principe painter Giuseppe Garzi, its secretary Giuseppe Gezzi, and the architects Gregorio Tommassini and Giovanni B. Menicucci. In the Archivio storico dell’Accademia di San Luca, preserved are three design drawings of a church made by Jan Reisner in pen and watercolor, showing the front elevation, longitudinal section, and a projection. Although they were made for the 1681 competition, they were labelled with the date 1682, when the prizes were already being awarded. Reisner’s design reflected the complicated trends in the architecture of the 1660s and 1670s, especially in the architectural education of St. Luke’s Academy. There, attempts were made to reconcile the classicistic tendencies promoted by the French court with the reference to the forms of mature Roman Baroque. As a result of this attempt to combine the features of the two traditions, an eclectic work was created, as well as other competition projects created by students of the St. Luke’s Academy. The architect designed the Barberini temple-mausoleum, on a circular plan with eight lower chapels opening inwards and a rectangular chancel. The inside of the rotund is divided into three parts: the main body with opening chapels, a tambour, and a dome with sketches of the Fall of Angels. Inside, there is an altar with a pillar-and-column canopy. The architectural origin of the building was determined by ancient buildings: the Pantheon (AD 125) and the Mausoleum of Constance (4th century AD). A modern school based of this model was opened by Andrea Palladio, who designed the Tempietto Barbaro in Maser from 1580. In the near future, the Santa Maria della Assunzione in Ariccia (1662-1664) by Bernini and Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption (1670-1676) in Paris by Charles Errard could provide inspiration. In particular, the unrealized project of Carlo Fontana to adapt the Colosseum to the place of worship of the Holy Martyrs was undertaken by Clement X in connection with the celebration of the Holy Year in 1675. In the middle of the Flavius amphitheatre, he designed the elevation of a church in the form of an antique-styled rotunda, with a dome on a high tambour and a wreath of chapels encircling it. Equally important was the design of the fountain of the central church in Basque Loyola (Santuario di S. Ignazio a Loyola). In the Baroque realizations of the then Rome we find patterns for the architectural decoration of the Reisnerian church. In the layout and the artwork of the facades we notice the influence of the columnar Baroque facades, so common in different variants in the works of da Cortona, Borromini and Rainaldi. The monumental columnar facades built according to Carlo Rainaldi’s designs were newly completed: S. Andrea della Valle (1656 / 1662-1665 / 1666) and S. Maria in Campitelli (designed in 1658-1662 and executed in 1663-1667), and Borromini San Carlo alle Quatro Fontane (1667-1677). The angels supporting the garlands on the plinths of the tambour attic are modelled on the decoration of two churches of Bernini: S. Maria della Assunzione in Ariccia (1662-1664) and S. Andrea al Quirinale (1658-1670). The repertoire of mature Baroque also includes the window frames of the front facade of the floor in the form of interrupted beams and, with the header made in the form of sections capped with volutes. The design indicates that the chancel was to be laid out on a slightly elongated rectangle with rounded corners and covered with a ceiling with facets, with a cross-section similar to a heavily flattened dome. It is close to the solutions used by Borromini in the Collegio di Propaganda Fide and the Oratorio dei Filippini. The three oval windows decorated with C-shaped arches and with ribs coming out of the volute of the base of the dome, which were among the characteristic motifs of da Cortona, taken over from Michelangelo, are visible. The crowning lantern was given an original shape: a pear-shaped outline with three windows of the same shape, embraced by S-shaped elongated volutes, which belonged to the canonical motifs used behind da Cortona by the crowds of architects of late Baroque eclecticism. Along with learning architecture, which was typical at the Academy, Reisner learned painting and geodesy, thanks to which, after his return to Poland, he gained prestige and importance at the court of Jan III, then with the Płock Voivode Jan Krasiński. His promising architectural talent did gain prominence as an architect in Poland, although – like few students of St. Luke’s Academy – he received all the honors as a student and graduate.

Editorial 2015 - EspecialA área de ensino de Bioquímica integra a reunião Anual da Sociedade Brasileira de Bioquímica e Biologia Molecular (SBBq) desde 1993. Ao longo dos anos, a área foi se estabelecendo e ganhando força e corpo.A materialização desse trabalho ocorreu com o lançamento, pela SBBq, da Revista de Ensino de Bioquímica e Biologia Molecular (RBEBBM), em 2001. Em 2012 a revista passou por um processo de reestruturação, ampliando seu escopo e equipe de trabalho, passando a se chamar Revista de Ensino de Bioquímica - REB (Journal of Biochemistry Education).Visando ampliar a divulgação da REB, a SBBq proporcionou, desde 2013, um espaço físico (estande) dentro da área do evento, para inserção de banners, materiais publicitários e espaço para contatar e dialogar com os visitantes.Uma vez que este ano a SBBq sediou a reunião da International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB), o espaço da revista ganhou destaque pela presença de membros do corpo editorial do Brazil, Chile e Uruguai.O evento ocorreu em Foz do Iguaçu, de 24 a 28 de agosto de 2015 (http://www.sbbq.org.br/iubmb2015).Os participantes puderam conversar com parte da equipe da REB, esclarecendo dúvidas, conhecendo novas informações e compartilhando suas experiências, constituindo-se um importante espaço de diálogo sobre Ensino de Bioquímica, Biologia Molecular e áreas correlatas.Além disso, muitos membros do corpo editorial, por conta da distância física, puderem se conhecer e trocar experiências.Com relação aos trabalhos apresentados na área de educação, durante o evento, houve dois simpósios, além dos 32 painéis apresentados na área de ensino de Bioquímica (área K).As primeiras apresentações ocorreram no dia 25 de agosto (9:00-11:00), no Simpósio 3 (Science Education “Leopoldo de Meis”), mediada pelo prof. Abstract Introduction: Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is the most prevalent histologic special type of breast cancer, representing ~15% of invasive breast cancers. ILCs are mostly hormone receptor-positive and diagnosed histologically based on their distinctive discohesive growth pattern, dispersed single cells or line of cells invading the stroma. ILCs commonly show biallelic inactivation of a CDH1 (~65%), a tumor suppressor gene that is mapped to 16q22.1 and encodes for E-cadherin, a critical component of the epithelial adhesion complex. Massively parallel sequencing and pathologic studies have shown that a subset of ILCs (up to 15%) may lack CDH1 loss-of-function (LOF) mutations/deletions and retain E-cadherin expression, despite their distinctive lobular phenotype. The genetic and epigenetic underpinning of ILCs lacking CDH1 alterations has yet to be defined. Here we sought to define the mechanistic basis of the lobular phenotype in ILCs lacking CDH1 LOF genetic alterations or CDH1 gene promoter methylation and to determine the repertoire of epigenetic and genetic alterations of CDH1-wildtype ILCs. Materials and methods: Reanalysis of the CDH1 gene status in 364 primary ILCs, previously subjected to clinical massively parallel sequencing, was performed to identify all primary ILCs lacking bi-allelic CDH1 alterations. The hematoxylin and eosin stained slides of all identified ILCs lacking bi-allelic CDH1 alterations were reviewed by two pathologists and primary pure ILCs lacking bi-allelic CDH1 alterations were curated. We evaluated the presence of genetic alterations in genes playing essential roles in epithelial adhesion included in the clinical sequencing panel of up to 505 genes. The presence of CDH1 promoter methylation in 18 ILCs lacking bi-allelic CDH1 alterations with available formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) material was assessed using methylation-specific PCR (MSP) and bisulfite sequencing. Results: We identified 23/364 (6.3%) primary ILCs lacking bi-allelic CDH1 alterations, of which 65.3% and 34.7% were classic and pleomorphic lobular variants, respectively. In 18 cases with available FFPE material, our analyses revealed that 67% (12/18) of ILCs lacking bi-allelic CDH1 alterations displayed biallelic CDH1 inactivation via promoter methylation and 16q loss. Furthermore, we observed that 1/23 ILC lacking bi-allelic CDH1 alterations had bi-allelic inactivation of AXIN2. We then extended our query to all invasive breast carcinomas subjected to clinical sequencing, including the ones initially categorized as invasive breast carcinoma “type unknown”, and observed that the three additional cases with pathogenic LOF AXIN2 alterations were ILCs lacking bi-allelic CDH1 alterations. Conclusions: The lobular phenotype in ILCs can be due to CDH1 promoter methylation or genetic alterations affecting other genes related to epithelial cell adhesion, such as AXIN2 LOF mutations. Whole-genome sequencing analyses of ILCs whose molecular basis has not been identified by targeted sequencing are warranted. Abstract Background: In early breast cancer, sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) has become the gold standard of axillary evaluation. Although it has less morbidity than axillary lymph node dissection, it may still cause sequelae. Currently, patients selection for SNB has been through physical examination, but presents low sensitivity and high false negative rate. Thus, ultrasonography with biopsy of suspected lymph nodes increases the accuracy. In an attempt to further reduce the morbidity of axillary surgery, it was hypothesized that it would be possible to avoid SLNB in women with early breast cancer. The aim of this study is to compare the SLNB with no axillary surgery as an approach to the axilla in early breast cancer and negative axilla clinical and ultrasonographical. Our trial includes some subsets excluded in others similar ongoing trials: patients that will undergo mastectomy and will receive primary systemic therapy. Trial design: A multicenter, phase III, prospective, open-label, non-inferiority randomized clinical trial, including 10 study sites in Brazil that will randomize 800 early breast cancer patients.Eligibility criteria: Inclusion: woman, age ≥ 18 years, histologic diagnostic of breast carcinoma, tumor ≤ 5 cm (T1 and T2) in all exams, clinically node-negative, ultrasound node-negative or negative core biopsy/fine needle aspiration if suspect lymph node (in this situation is mandatory lymph node tissue in pathologic exam). Exclusion: metastatic disease in biopsy or image before treatment, pregnancy, breastfeed, previous diagnostic of invasive neoplasia (excluding skin cancer no melanoma). It will be allowed mastectomy and neoadjuvant treatment if patient has negative axilla and T1-2 pre-systemic therapy.Intervention and stratification: Participants in experimental group will not be undergo axillary surgery and in control group will be submitted at SLNB. The randomization will be 1:1 ratio and stratified by: tumor size (T1 and T2) and age (≥50 and < 50 years)Specific aims: the primary objective is to access whether omission of axillar surgery is not inferior than SLNB in term of disease-free survival (DFS) at 5 years (primary endpoint). Secondary endpoints are overall survival, locoregional free survival, axillary recurrence rate, to describe surgical early and later complications and to evaluate costs of procedure SLNB or no. Statistical methods: with type I error 5%, power 80% and risk ratio 0.8, considering DFS at 5 years 90% in control group non-inferior DFS at 5 years 85% in experimental group, it was calculated sample size of 400 patients randomized and with follow up in each group (lost estimated 10%). Chi-squares and Fisher's tests will be used for the univariate analyzes, and logistic regression models for adjusted analyzes. Disease-free survival analysis, disease-free survival at a distance, and overall survival will be performed, which will be compared between groups using Kaplan-Meyer curves, log-rank tests and Cox Proportional Hazards-adjusted analyzes. The analyzes will be made intention-to-treat and per protocol.Present and target accrual: the trial was activated at November 2019 and 92 patients were accrued on July 7th 2021. King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary (1458‒1490), son of the “Scourge of the Turks,” John Hunyadi, was a foremost patron of early Renaissance art. He was only fourteen years old in 1470 when he was elected king, and his patronage naturally took some time and maturity to develop, notably through his relations with the Neapolitan Aragon dynasty. In December 1476, he married Beatrice, daughter of Ferdinand of Aragon, who brought to Buda a love of books and music she had inherited from her grandfather, Alphonse of Aragon.I studied the work of Beatrice’s brother John of Aragon (Giovanni d’Aragona), previously known mainly from Thomas Haffner’s monograph on his library (1997), from the viewpoint of his influence on Matthias’s art patronage. John was born in Naples on June 25, 1456, the third son of Ferdinand I of Aragon. His father, crowned king by Pope Pius II in 1458 following the death of Alphonse of Aragon, intended from the outset that he should pursue a church career. Ferdinand’s children, Alphonse (heir to the throne), Beatrice, and John were educated by outstanding humanist teachers, including Antonio Beccadelli (Il Panormita) and Pietro Ranzano. Through his father and the kingdom’s good relations with the papacy, John acquired many benefices, and when Pope Sixtus IV (1471‒1484) created him cardinal at the age of twenty-one, on December 10, 1477, he made a dazzling entrance to Rome. John was — together with Marco Barbo, Oliviero Carafa, and Francesco Gonzaga — one of the principal contemporary patrons of the College of Cardinals.On April 19, 1479, Sixtus IV appointed John legatus a latere, to support Matthias’s planned crusade against the Ottomans. On August 31, he departed Rome with two eminent humanists, Raffaele Maffei (also known as Volaterranus), encyclopedist and scriptor apostolicus of the Roman Curia, and Felice Feliciano, collector of ancient Roman inscriptions. John made stops in Ferrara, and Milan, and entered Buda — according to Matthias’s historian Antonio Bonfini — with great pomp. During his eight months in Hungary, he accompanied Matthias and Beatrice to Visegrád, Tata, and the Carthusian monastery of Lövöld and probably exerted a significant influence on the royal couple, particularly in the collecting of books. Matthias appointed his brother-in-law archbishop of Esztergom, the highest clerical office in Hungary, with an annual income of thirty thousand ducats.Leaving Hungary in July 1480, John returned to Rome via Venice and Florence, where, as reported by Ercole d’Este’s ambassador to Florence, Lorenzo de’ Medici showed him the most valuable works of art in his palace, and he visited San Marco and its library and the nearby Medici sculpture garden.In September 1483, Sixtus IV again appointed John legate, this time to Germany and Hungary. He took with him the Veronese physician Francesco Fontana and stayed in Buda and Esztergom between October 1483 and June 1484. The royal couple presented him with silver church vessels, a gold chalice, vestments, and a miter.John’s patronage focused on book collecting and building. He spent six thousand ducats annually on the former. Among his acquisitions were contemporary architectural treatises by Leon Battista Alberti and Filarete, which he borrowed for copying from Lorenzo’s library. They were also featured in Matthias Corvinus’s library, perhaps reflecting John’s influence. Around 1480, during his stay in Buda (approximately 1478‒1480), the excellent miniaturist, Francesco Rosselli made the first few large-format luxury codices for Matthias and Beatrice. Both Queen Beatrice and John of Aragon played a part of this by bringing with them the Aragon family’s love of books, and perhaps also a few codices. The Paduan illuminator Gaspare da Padova (active 1466‒1517), who introduced the all’antica style to Neapolitan book painting, was employed in Rome by John as well as by Francesco Gonzaga, and John’s example encouraged Matthias and Beatrice commission all’antica codices. He may also have influenced the choice of subject matter: John collected only ancient and late classical manuscripts up to 1483 and mainly theological and scholastic books thereafter; Matthias’s collection followed a similar course in which theological and scholastic works proliferated after 1485. Anthony Hobson has detected a link between Queen Beatrice’s Psalterium and the Livius codex copied for John of Aragon: both were bound by Felice Feliciano, who came to Hungary with the Cardinal. Feliciano’s probable involvement with the Erlangen Bible (in the final period of his work, probably in Buda) may therefore be an important outcome of the art-patronage connections between John and the king of Hungary.John further shared with Matthias a passion for building. He built palaces for himself in the monasteries of Montevergine and Montecassino, of which he was abbot, and made additions to the cathedral of Sant’Agata dei Goti and the villa La Conigliera in Naples. Antonio Bonfini, in his history of Hungary, highlights Matthias’s interest, which had a great impact on contemporaries; but only fragments of his monumental constructions survive.We see another link between John and Matthias in the famous goldsmith of Milan, Cristoforo Foppa (Caradosso, c. 1452‒1526/1527). Caradosso set up his workshop in John’s palace in Rome, where he began but — because of his patron’s death in autumn 1485 — was unable to finish a famous silver salt cellar that he later tried to sell. John may also have prompted Matthias to invite Caradosso to spend several months in Buda, where he made silver tableware.Further items in the metalware category are our patrons’ seal matrices. My research has uncovered two kinds of seal belonging to Giovanni d’Aragona. One, dating from 1473, is held in the archives of the Benedictine Abbey of Montecassino. It is a round seal with the arms of the House of Aragon at the centre. After being created cardinal in late 1477, he had two types of his seal. The first, simple contained only his coat of arm (MNL OL, DL 18166). The second elaborate seal matrix made in the early Renaissance style, of which seals survive in the Archivio Apostolico Vaticano (Fondo Veneto I 5752, 30 September 1479) and one or two documents in the Esztergom Primatial Archive (Cathedral Chapter Archive, Lad. 53., Fasc. 3., nr.16., 15 June 1484). At the centre of the mandorla-shaped field, sitting on a throne with balustered arm-rest and tympanum above, is the Virgin Mary (Madonna lactans type), with two supporting figures whose identification requires further research. The legend on the seal is fragmentary: (SIGILL?)VM ……….DON IOANNIS CARDINALIS (D’?) ARAGONIA; beneath it is the cardinal’s coat of arms in the form of a horse’s head (testa di cavallo) crowned with a hat. It may date from the time of Caradosso’s first presumed stay in Rome (1475‒1479), suggesting him as the maker of the matrix, a hypothesis for which as yet no further evidence is known to me. The seals of King Matthias have been thoroughly studied, and the form and use of each type have been almost fully established.John of Aragon was buried in Rome, in his titular church, in the Dominican Basilica of Santa Sabina. Johannes Burckard described the funeral procession from the palace to the Aventine in his Liber notarum. Matthias died in 1490 in his new residence, the Vienna Burg, and his body was taken in grand procession to Buda and subsequently to the basilica of Fehérvár, the traditional place of burial of Hungarian kings. The project aims to develop a corpus of the 14th century marble sculptures in Brescia, Mantua and Cremona. After mapping the materials localized in these territories, which was made possible thanks to the inventories of the respective Superintendencies and Dioceses, as well as the bibliography, it was possible to collect a large number of testimonies. The resulting archival investigation allowed to refine the research on the history of the pieces, to update and correct the data already reported in bibliography and to investigate unpublished works. From a methodological point of view it was considered appropriate to proceed with the stylistic analysis of the sculptures in parallel with the identification of contexts, origins, authors, models and influences. This made it possible to identify and deepen a critical chapter, the history of Gothic sculpture in this part of Lombardy, which until a few decades ago was rather neglected by studies. The development of a catalog, divided into territorial sections, aims to be an easy reference tool for scholars of Italian sculpture. Several unpublished works have emerged in Brescia and in its province. Some hypotheses have been advanced about the path of the sculptor Delaido da Lodi, active in 1301 in Gargnano, and about the artworks in and from Brescia realized by the Master of Sant’Anastasia. The Mantua area, which returned the most significant results, was analyzed from the beginning of the fourteenth century to the eve of the dalle Masegne season. During this period of time, various artists, mainly from Venice, were active in the city. Among them, the sculptor Andrea da San Felice, the anonymous artist baptized here with the name of "Maestro di Piero Maser" and Antonio da Mestre. Some of the sculptures collected can be related to Lombard artists such as the "Maestro di Viboldone", to whom a new sculpture is attributed, and Guido Frisoni, an artist mentioned in some documents preserved in the State Archive of Mantua, to whom it is now possible to trace the "Madonna with Child" in Grazie di Curtatone, thanks to the interpretation of the epigraph placed at the base. The Cremona area closes the catalogue, which stands out for the quality of the surviving works, at the expense of quantity. The famous reliefs preserved in the church of San Bassiano in Pizzighettone are exemplary of the formal refinement of the survivals of this territory.
Il progetto si è posto l'obiettivo di elaborare un corpus delle sculture del XIV secolo in marmo conservate nelle province di Brescia, Mantova e Cremona. Grazie all’iniziale mappatura dei materiali nei singoli territori, realizzata passando in rassegna gli inventari delle rispettive Soprintendenze e Diocesi, oltre alla bibliografia, è stato possibile raccogliere un cospicuo numero di testimonianze. La conseguente indagine archivistica ha consentito di perfezionare le ricerche sulla storia conservativa dei singoli pezzi, di aggiornare e correggere i dati già segnalati in bibliografia e di indagare sugli inediti. A ciò si è aggiunta l’analisi stilistica delle sculture, che è avvenuta parallelamente all’individuazione di contesti, provenienze, autori, modelli ed influenze. Ciò ha permesso di individuare e fare il punto su un capitolo critico, la storia della scultura gotica in questi territori della Lombardia, che fino a pochi decenni fa era poco frequentato dagli studi. Numerosi sono, inoltre, gli spunti di ricerca emersi per il futuro. Per questo motivo è stato elaborato un catalogo, che ha l’obiettivo di essere uno strumento di agile consultazione per gli studiosi di scultura italiana. Sono emerse diverse opere inedite nel bresciano, su cui si è cercato di far luce. Alcune ipotesi sono state avanzate circa il percorso dello scultore Delaido da Lodi, attivo nel 1301 a Gargnano, e riguardo alle testimonianze bresciane del Maestro di Sant’Anastasia. Il territorio mantovano, che ha restituito i risultati più significativi, è stato analizzato dagli esordi del Trecento fino alla vigilia della stagione dei dalle Masegne. Durante questo lasso di tempo furono attivi in città diversi artisti, principalmente provenienti da Venezia, su cui ora è possibile ragionare. Tra essi emergono lo scultore Andrea da San Felice, l'anonimo artista battezzato in questa sede con il nome di "Maestro di Piero Maser" e Antonio da Mestre. Di origine lombarda furono invece il Maestro delle sculture di Viboldone, a cui in questa sede è attribuita una nuova opera, e Guido Frisoni da Como, artista citato in alcuni documenti conservati a Mantova, in Archivio di Stato, a cui è ora possibile ricondurre la 'Madonna con Bambino' di Grazie di Curtatone grazie all'interpretazione dell'epigrafe posta alla base dell'opera. Chiude il lavoro il territorio di Cremona, che si distingue per la qualità delle opere superstiti, a discapito della quantità. Esemplificativi della ricercatezza formale delle sopravvivenze di questo territorio sono i celebri rilievi che si conservano nella chiesa di San Bassiano a Pizzighettone.

La tesi di dottorato affronta la ricostruzione del cantiere decorativo del deambulatorio del Santuario di Santa Maria dei Miracoli presso San Celso, tra il 1540 e il 1566 circa, attraverso l'esame delle opere, dei documenti e della bibliografia. La prima parte è dedicata al Santuario nel suo complesso ed è costituita da un capitolo che analizza la storiografia artistica dalla fine del Cinquecento ad oggi, e da tre appendici, rispettivamente dedicate alla guidistica, alla fortuna visiva e ai fabbricieri. La seconda parte è dedicata al cantiere decorativo del deambulatorio ed è costituita da un capitolo che analizza in ordine cronologico l'intero sviluppo del cantiere (con aperture sul periodo precedente il 1540 e successivo il 1566, in particolare sull'epoca borromaica e sui restauri ottocenteschi) e da schede specifiche per ogni opera (pala d'altare) o intervento (stucchi e affreschi). La tesi è corredata da un consistente apparato di immagini (in larga parte derivate da una campagna fotografica realizzata grazie alla strumentazione messa a disposizione dal Dipartimento), da un ricco regesto dei documenti e dalla bibliografia.
The PhD thesis consists in a reconstruction of the different phases of the decoration of the ambulatory of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dei Miracoli presso San Celso (between 1540 and 1566) through the examination of works, documents and bibliography. The first part is dedicated to the Sanctuary as a whole, and consists of: a chapter that analyzes the art historiography from the end of the Sixteenth century to today; three appendices, respectively dedicated to the guides (of the Sanctuary and of Milan), the visual fortune and the "fabbricieri" (the Sanctuary holders). The second part is dedicated to the phases of the decoration of the ambulatory and consist of: a chapter that analyzes in chronological order the making of the decoration (with digressions on the period prior to 1540 and next to 1566, in particular on the Borromaic period and on the nineteenth-century restorations); a entry for each work (altar piece) or decorative intervention (stuccoes and frescoes). The thesis is accompanied by a substantial array of images (largely derived from a photo campaign thanks to the instrumentation made available by the Department), a rich document summary and a bibliography.

Il presente lavoro pone la lente d’ingrandimento sui rapporti artistici e culturali intercorsi tra la Repubblica di Venezia e l’Impero Russo nel XVIII secolo, dando rilievo alla presenza della pittura veneta a San Pietroburgo. Il consolidamento dei legami con Venezia, avviato nell’epoca di Pietro il Grande, aveva permesso alla pittura veneta di ‘espandersi’ fino alle sponde della città sul fiume Neva. Negli anni venti del Settecento il primo pittore veneto ad arrivare in Russia è Bartolomeo Tarsia, mentre bisogna aspettare il regno di Elisabetta Petrovna, figlia dello zar Pietro, per vedere all’opera contemporaneamente un gran numero di artisti veneti: Giuseppe Valeriani, Antonio Peresinotti, Pietro e Francesco Gradizzi, Francesco Fontebasso, Pietro Rotari, Andrea Urbani e Carlo Zucchi. In primo luogo, sono state indagate le condizioni di vita e di lavoro dei pittori veneti a San Pietroburgo con un’attenzione particolare agli ingaggi, ai privilegi e ai rapporti relazionali. Successivamente si sono prese in esame da una parte l’attività decorativa all’interno delle fastose residenze imperiali, come i Palazzi d’Inverno, i Palazzi d’Estate, il palazzo di Caterina a Tsarskoe Selo e quello di Peterhof, dall’altra l’insegnamento nelle più grandi istituzioni di formazione artistica della Russia dell’epoca. Sono stati poi delineati i profili biografici di Diego Bodissoni, Giuseppe Dall’Oglio e Pano Maruzzi, attivi come intermediari e commercianti d’arte, i quali hanno il merito di aver favorito l’approdo di dipinti della scuola veneta a San Pietroburgo.
The present work places the magnifying glass on the artistic and cultural relations between the Republic of Venice and the Russian Empire in the eighteenth century, highlighting the presence of Venetian painting in St. Petersburg. The consolidation of ties with Venice, initiated in the era of Peter the Great, had allowed Venetian painting to 'expand' to the banks of the city on the Neva river. In the 1720s the first Venetian painter to arrive in Russia was Bartolomeo Tarsia, while it was necessary to wait for the reign of Elisabetta Petrovna, daughter of Tsar Pietro, to see a large number of Venetian artists at work at the same time: Giuseppe Valeriani, Antonio Peresinotti, Pietro and Francesco Gradizzi, Francesco Fontebasso, Pietro Rotari, Andrea Urbani and Carlo Zucchi. First of all, the living and working conditions of Venetian painters in St. Petersburg were investigated, with particular attention paid to engagements, privileges and interpersonal relations. Subsequently, the decorative activity within the sumptuous imperial residences, such as the Winter Palaces, the Summer Palaces, the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoe Selo and the Peterhof Palace, were examined on one hand, while on the other hand, the teaching in the largest institutions of artistic education in Russia at the time. The biographical profiles of Diego Bodissoni, Giuseppe Dall'Oglio and Pano Maruzzi were also outlined, active as intermediaries and art dealers, who have the merit of having favoured the arrival of paintings of the Venetian school in St. Petersburg.
