In line with the growth of interests at the study of cross-cultural pragmatics, however, the study comparison between Indonesian and American culture has not been presented adequately in the terms of advice-giving. Advice-giving strategies in Indonesian culture and American culture with the focus on a close relationship domain are the focus of this research. Specifically, it compares the advice-giving of native Indonesian speakers in television series entitled ‘Tetangga Masa Gitu?’ on Net TV with native English American characters which depicted on NBC TV channel entitled ‘Friends’. Moreover, this study attempts to identify the similarities and differences between both objects. The data are from six episodes of the two. Qualitative research method is used to conduct this research. This research describes the pattern of the advice-giving speech act realization from the characters of two television series and compares both cultures. The findings show that advice giving in Indonesian and American cultures is classified into giving support, giving suggestions, and stating prohibition. Generally, advice-giving in Indonesian culture tends to be indirect since it is crucial to save hearer's face. In American culture, direct strategies are mostly chosen as it is a matter to show one’s freedom of self-expression. Most of advice-giving in American cultures include related facts to strengthen the illocutionary force.

The study of intercultural communication within large cultures is particularly relevant in the 21st century in an era of globalization. Nowadays, thanks to the development of new information channels, such as social networks, as well as public diplomacy, branding of culture and art, popularization of national cultural traditions has become an integral part of the cultural diplomacy of Latin American countries. Despite globalization that has led to the global hybridization of television production, Latin American television series still retain the characteristics of unique products, introducing the foreign viewer to the culture and traditions of the Latin American region. In the 21st century, leading Latin American TV companies have changed the content of TV series aimed at different groups of target audiences. Social topics related to inequality, the emergence of civil society, problems of young people, and criminalization of society have found their way beyond the Latin American continent and have received a strong response in European countries. The Netflix site has become an important communication channel for Latin American television serial products. Television series, as the main marketing product of the leading Latin American media conglomerates, have contributed to the development of intercultural communication with European target audiences, where Latin American television stations have found similar social and cultural features and have become a kind of brand of this television genre. The popularity of Latin American serial products in Europe is due to the emergence of hybrid series and joint Latin American-European production of this type of entertainment television products. The article explores the stages of Latin American TV series' distribution in European countries and their impact on intercultural communication between Latin America and Europe.

There have been many studies on race relations between African-American and White-American or Asian-American and White-American. However, there are few studies regarding the portrayal of these three races in media, such as film. The purpose of this study is to expose the Watchmen (2019) television series’ African-American superhero narrative and its racial relationship between white Americans, African Americans, and Vietnamese Americans (Asian Americans). In the United States, recent race relation is considered better than in the past, as proved by Obama serving the country for two terms, but the media is still preserving each race’s labels. This study argues that this series is proof of racist behavior in media. This qualitative study uses narrative and non-narrative to analyze the data gained from the series. This television series, uncommonly, shows the White-American as the villain while the African American as the hero, which makes this series worth analyzing. The series finally attained a complex racial relationship when a Vietnamese-American character was introduced. Racial stereotypes are frequently depicted in popular culture, including movies and television shows. Consequently, it is interesting to investigate its intricacy in light of white supremacy. This series presents several shots and events indicating a racist community, even from the very beginning of the series. Thus, this study argues that the series does not portray White-American as a villain but perpetuates the stereotypes of African-Americans and Asian-American.

IntroductionPersonality disorders comprise a set of diagnosis characterized by inflexible, pervasive and enduring patterns of cognition, affect, behavioural and social interaction. The status of research on the personality among different cultures implies the universality of traits and disorders, as well as, their measuresacross cultures.ObjectivesTo study the prevalence of personality disorders in foreigner patients.MethodsIn this retrospective case series, clinicaldata was collected from 40 patients who were hospitalized at the short-stay inpatient psychiatric service of the Príncipe de Asturias University Hospital during 2018.ResultsNineteen (47.5%) patients were European, ten (25%) were from South America, nine (22.5%) were Africanand two (5%) were Asian. Eight patients were diagnosed of diverse personality disorders. Seven (87.5%) of them were European, and only one (12.5%) was from South America.ConclusionsThis case series suggests various directions for future research. The fact that patients diagnosed with personalitydisorders were mainly European could indicate diverse conclusions. It would question the universality of personality disorders out of a Euro-american frame of reference. It would also point out the difficulty of diagnosing personality disorders, taking into consideration language, awareness of cultural values, traditions, interactional patterns, and social norms. More studies of traits and personality are needed, taking into account the culture and the society in which patients have grown and in which they currently live.DisclosureNo significant relationships.

The global rise of Netflix as subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) has emerged along with its capitalization of film, television, and technology industry for the audience's convenience. It replaces the interest of local television with its claim of 'a global TV network' with cultural diversity in its contents. However, the term cultural diversity itself should be questioned whether it means to leave the American cultural power or it is only to claim themselves as a global company where global identity is represented in their identity to attract a wider audience. By using transnational approach, this study finds the use of cultural diversity merely to fulfill the demand of the American audience, with several globalization consequences in Netflix Original series, especially in non-American series. Those consequences are the homogenization in European-made Netflix series, where they appear to be fully Americanized with American lifestyle or American perspective, and heterogenization in Asian-made Netflix series with its collaboration of Asian culture and American popular culture. The claim of a 'global TV network' itself does not leave the American cultural power. Instead, they are taking advantage of the cultural power to retain the existing audiences and to fascinate more audiences. Therefore, the dependency of non-American producers in relying on Netflix platform as a way to reach global audience, even the use of Americanization to their works for global audience's satisfaction, confirms the cultural power of America in its ability to bring economic advancement to other countries.

This audience study explores how a group of children from Southeast Mexico, perceive the animated cartoon «Dexter’s Laboratory». The objective is to observe the ways in which a young local audience, still in the process of building its cultural identity, perceives an American television program. A qualitative approach was applied: 44 children between 8 and 11 years old participated in a series of semi-structured interviews and focus groups, which took place in a provincial city in Mexico (Villahermosa, Tabasco). In each session, the participants watched an episode of the cartoon dubbed into Latin Spanish. Afterwards, it was assessed if they were able to notice cultural elements present in the series (texts in English, traditions, ways of life, symbols, etc.), which are different from their own culture. It was also observed if age, gender and social background had any impact on the degree of awareness. The results showed that most of the participants were aware of beingthat they were watching a foreign program, that they could recognize elements of American culture and that they applied diverse strategies to make sense of these foreign narratives. Older children, and those studying English as a second language, were able to make more sophisticated comparisons between the cultures of Mexico and the United States.

Abstract Gender fluidity makes only rare appearances on North American television, and remains almost completely absent from programming for children. In contrast, transgender characters are making inroads into mainstream North American TV for adults. Still, media depictions of transgender people in the late 1990s and early 2000s have largely shown them as aberrations, having illegible and/or unstable identities, joining mainstream Euro North American society which tends to medicalize and pathologize transgender identities. Thus, too often the representation provided serves only to reinforce binaries by making the character exceptional and noting their unconventionality, or to highlight gender fluidity as a problem. Examining the animated streaming TV series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018–2020), we use scholarship on gender fluidity to critique the show’s representations of genders in addition to and beyond male and female. Looking at She-Ra through this lens, the show challenges assumptions about princesses, villains, helpers, and heroes. Ultimately transgressing traditional categories, the princesses and their allies, in their own distinct embodiments and self-presentations, use their differing magical and other skills to fight enemies in the Evil Horde to protect their planet, Etheria.

Today, especially with the globalization process, Turkish TV series are becoming widespread on the international market as a product of the culture industry, and gradually increasing their impact. During this period, in which the 2000s constituted an important breaking point, Turkish TV series reached a wide audience in Latin American countries as well as in the Middle East, the Balkans, Eurasia and Southeast Asia. The fact that Turkish TV series are followed with interest and have a large audience in Latin American countries, as in many other countries of the world, shows that Turkish TV series have important effects on the social structures and audiences of Latin American countries. This study aims to examine the main factors and dynamics that make Turkish TV series effective in Latin American societies as a product of the culture industry. Within the scope of the study, the findings obtained as a result of in-depth interviews with 20 people using the qualitative research method were analyzed through descriptive analysis. The research findings revealed that Turkish TV series have positive impacts on the social structure of Latin American societies towards Türkiye, as well as stimulating the learning of eating and drinking habits, clothing preferences, and more importantly, learning Turkish language and culture, which will affect social change.

This essay analyzes Japanese-American immigration into the American West through the prism of athletics, specifically by examining a series of contests between judoka and wrestlers from 1900 to 1920 in California. The popularity of these matches demonstrates the complex relationship between Japanese-Americans and the dominant European-American culture of the western states during this period. This complexity will be shown first by looking at the way in which martial arts are closely linked to national and ethnic identity. The strong barnstorming tradition in both judo and wrestling led to a number of matches of great interest to European-Americans of the period. These matches appealed to an interest in Japanese culture, a desire to see stereotypes reinforced, and nationalist tendencies during an age of uncertainty.

the work is devoted to observations of the phenomenon of modern mass culture, which is in demand by viewers on the Internet -the television series "Wednesday", created by order of the «Netflix»streaming service, for children and youth audiences. The author analyzes in detail the gothic elements underlying the fantastic plot scheme, intertextual inclusions in the idea of film writers, in particular, the work of E.A. Poe, motifs from the novels by M. Shelley and R. Stevenson and Old Testament allusions, as well as possible parallels with the equally popular a decade ago with the Harry Potter series. Attention is paid to the genre forms of mass culture, the thrillerand the detective story, which were clearly used by the script authors in their work on the TV series "Wednesday". The value orientations of modern public life in the United States, which are reflected in popular culture, are considered in detail.

The relevance of collective memory analysis comes from the increasing role of memorization in social processes, which are currently acquiring increasingly significant conflict potential. The author analyses visual material of the popular science fiction series The Orville, which represents a segment of American political culture, as one of the cultural mechanisms for the assimilation of ideology and politics in mass cultural discourse. It is presumed that The Orville parodies the classic epics Star Trek and Babylon 5 and thus is part of the processes of deconstructing the historical collective memory of modern American society. This study intends to establish how a formally parody series not only mocks and imitates, but also constructs its own versions of memorial culture. The article aims: 1) to describe the universal tactics of deconstruction as a form of revision of existing memorial cultures; 2) to clarify the possibilities and boundaries of describing memorial culture through the prism of visual mass culture, using the example of a science fiction series; 3) to analyze the modes of updating political and social contradictions in American society on the example of the TV series The Orville; 4) to consider the specificity of the transformation of mass consciousness by constructing a new version of identity in the light of a radical revision of the narratives of classic science fiction series; 5) to analyze the political and ideological dimensions of the memory wars presented in the clash of traditional and liberal values of the characters in the series. Methodology of the article bases on the principles of the memorial turn and the analysis of the politics of memory within the paradigm of cultural and intellectual history and includes the methods of discourse analysis and intent analysis. The novelty of the study lies in determining the directions and specificities of the assimilation of the political, limited by the problems of collective memory, cultural, religious and gender identity along with military and ideological confrontation in modern mass culture of historical memory within the visual space of the science fiction series The Orville. The series is analyzed as an attempt to deconstruct the cultural experience and legacy of Star Trek, which actualized science fiction series as one of the sources of cultural and social meanings for modern consumer society. The author also analyzes the contribution of the series to the development of the collective memory of US society; the transformation of the concepts of Self and Otherness through the prism of specifying cultural, religious and gender roles. Revision of the past in popular culture as an alternative space for the functioning of collective historical memory is investigated. As a result of the study, it is presumed that The Orville actualizes modern American laughter culture and inspires attempts to rethink collective memory, the collective historical experience of trauma and represents an attempt to abandon the strategies of historical amnesia and ignoring politically inconvenient experiences.

ABSTRACTThis essay argues Marshall is “blackening the frame” with his African‐centric comic series Rythm Mastr. The series is a corrective to the overwhelming whiteness of canonical comics and the silencing and erasure of Black people in American popular culture and fine art. Through the incorporation of Yoruba figures within the superhero genre, Marshall explores Black history and reframes American popular culture towards an African‐oriented future as part of a broader insurgence among Black comic creators.

AbstractFrom 2006 to 2008, Peter J. Vernezze served as a Peace Corps volunteer at Sichuan Normal University in Chengdu, taking a two-year leave of absence from his regular job as a philosophy professor. During this time he facilitated a film series for his Chinese undergraduate students which showed classic and contemporary American films – everything from Casablanca to the Marx brothers to Brokeback Mountain. The goal of the series was "to use film in order to shed light on and increase the understanding of American culture and values." This essay is a personal account of the discussions which took place after the screenings and what this American and these Chinese students may or may not have learned from each other about universalities and differences in cultures.

Marilyn Chin’s one and only novel, Revenge of the Mooncake Vixen (2009), presents highly fragmented narratives that revolve around the lives of three female Chinese Americans of two different generations in the process of reaching their immigrant American dreams. Such narrative characteristics prompt an analysis conducted in this article which parallels the series of maneuvers of the trio with Deleuze & Guattari’s systemic procedure of coup et flux (cut and flow). The aim is to show that the idea of assimilating American dream with the immigrant’s is a complex matter as it involves series of actions that compromise the two. The trio’s mode of action, the presence of textual divine intervention in the narrative fragments, and epigraphs from classical to popular texts encourage an analysis using narrative studies, focusing mainly on plot structure. In the context of negotiating Chinese American culture, this article argues that within the frame of tale of revenge, the process of reaching the immigrant American dream undergoes a series of endless systemic procedure of coup et flux. The negotiation process presented via uncertainty and series of transits in the novel thus causes endlessness that leads to an idea that the dream, the happiness, would never actually reach its definite ending point; it is merely a series of transits.

The present paper reflects on the importance of cultural awareness in ESP classes and suggests incorporating some cultural elements of American studies into the course of teaching English. To explore the depth of the student’s familiarity with the culture of the target language, a survey was conducted among the students of different departments at Yerevan State University. The paper also suggests introducing a series of classes on American culture, which will complement the core ESP class and give the learners an opportunity to enrich their knowledge of the culture of a country that has the largest English-speaking population.

The article considers common challenges of translating culture-bound vocabulary in popular American TV series. The article is aimed to determine basic techniques of linguocultural adaptation in Russian translation of “Friends” TV series. Traditional comparative and statistical analysis methods are applied to examine culture-bound elements of the original text of the above-mentioned sitcom, and therefore, to identify adequate techniques of linguocultural adaptation in its Russian translation. Moreover, “Friends” TV series contains a huge number of phraseological units, puns and jokes adequately conveyed in its Russian translation, and therefore, keeping the target audience interested in the sitcom. Scientific novelty of the research is determined by the author’s attempt to compile some essential tips for linguocultural adaptation while translating TV series from English into Russian. Research findings have proved that achieving success in both linguistic and cultural adaption implies the translator’s ability to take into account the particular nature of both the form of the material presented and its perception by the target audience. Thus, the linguocultural adaptation whiletranslating TV series from English into Russian requires a translator to have a bicultural competence that involves background knowledge (linguistic and extralinguistic) about both the source and target cultures.

Drawing from intersectionality theories and black feminist critiques of white, masculinist, and racist discourses still prevailing in the American popular culture of the twenty-first century, this article looks critically at contemporary images of African-American women in the selected television series. For at least four decades critics of American popular culture have been pointing to, on the one hand, the dominant stereotypes of African-American women (the so-called controlling images, to use the expression coined by Patricia Hill Collins) resulting from slavery, racial segregation, white racism and sexism as well as, on the other hand, to significant marginalization or invisibility of black women in mainstream film and television productions. In this context, the article analyzes two contemporary television shows casting African-American women as leading characters (e.g., Scandal, 2012-2018 and How To Get Away With Murder, 2014-2020) to see whether these narratives are novel in portraying black women’s experiences or, rather, they inscribe themselves in the assimilationist and post-racial ways of representation.

Mary Pope Osborne is a prominent contemporary children’s book author, best- known for her Magic tree house series. She creates an imaginary world in which the books in the magic tree house literally transport her child protagonists, Jack and Annie, to other times and places. Osborne’s books are written simply so that young readers can follow a story that engages them, as they learn about diverse cultures, history and science. In Buffalo before breakfast (1999), the eighteenth book in the Magic tree house series, Jack and Annie travel to a Lakota camp on the Great Plains of North America in the 1800s, before the arrival of white prospectors, settlers and soldiers. By recreating the life of a traditional Lakota camp, Osborne gives readers a version of Native American history that has been silenced and marginalised. This article will examine her representation of Lakota history, culture and spirituality in Osborne’s Buffalo before breakfast, and cite research to support the story she tells.

BeTipul, the first Israeli TV series purchased by American television, and its American adaptation, In Treatment, provide an intriguing case of bidirectional (peripheral-global) cultural transfer. Focusing on the psychotherapy content of the show, this article examines the effect of foreignness versus compatibility it generated in the two different reception spaces. In America, the adaptation strategies and critics’ response to the remake reveal a smooth naturalization in the target setting, whereas in the (source) Israeli setting critics’ commentaries and anonymous online comments to the original series reveal that it was conceived from the outset as an American-like production made in Israel – evaluated either positively, as matching international standards, or negatively, as a cultural pretense. The antagonism between Israeli viewers of this show illustrates the powerful ‘foreignness effect’ associated with psychotherapy images in the local culture, inciting a social contest between elitist and mass audience.

Many experts believe that language is broadly defined as an external expression reflecting its social groups’ behaviour and cultures. The relationship between language and culture is deeply rooted and inseparable as they may affect each other. This article presents and explores cross-cultural understanding in Emily in Paris Series Season 1, specifically Season 1 and 2. Emily, the protagonist, is portrayed as an American woman who is unexpectedly hired at a marketing firm in Paris, French. The series explicitly showed Emily’s struggle encountering language and culture clash in Paris due to her lack of understanding and pragmatic mismatch. This current study adopts a descriptive qualitative method to examine 7 data taken from conversations transcription from Season 1: Episodes 1 and 2. The collected data is then carefully analyzed and elaborated using relevant theories. This result of this research evidently demonstrates multiple ways of how Americans and French behave. In summation, this research has demonstrated distinctive ways of greeting, giving compliments, the concept of time and space, the idea of business and personal space, and idiomatic expressions. In brief, this holocultural research could promote awareness and understanding of cultural differences as a tool to overcome this intertwined world as well as avoid cultural shock

The author analyzes Star Trek and Babylon 5 series as segments of American political culture and collective memory. The purpose of the article is to analyze how American popular culture, represented by the TV series, actualizes and visualizes the problems of the admissibility / inadmissibility of external influence / non-influence of more developed societies on less developed ones and demonstrates the features of collective memory developments. The author studies the assimilation of the political in the visual discourses of mass culture. Methodologically, the article is based on the principles proposed in the memorial turn and the analysis of the politics of memory within the paradigm of intellectual history. The novelty of the study lies in the analysis of common and unique features and directions of assimilation of the political, reduced to the problems of interference / nonintervention, in modern mass culture and historical memory. The article considers 1) the modes of actualization of political and social differences between societies in Star Trek and Babylon 5 TV series; 2) the political and ideological dimensions of intervention through the prism of mass culture and aspects of the functioning of various memorial cultures; 3) the problems of memory as the trauma received during the forced interaction of imagined societies with different identities in the contexts of the development of collective memories and the uncomfortable past revision through the formation of a compromise memorial canon. The article shows the contribution of the series as elements of mass cultural discourse to the development of Western political culture and of Selfness and Otherness concepts, and indicates their role in the revision of the past in popular culture. The results of the study suggest that the assimilation of the political in mass cultural discourse became both an incentive for ideological modifications and transformations of modern society, and a form of promoting the principles of political correctness and tolerance as its systemic characteristics. Moreover, it can be viewed as an attempt to revise the memorial canon and to enhance it by alternative visions of history, based on the revitalization of marginalized collective memories.

After the 9/11 tragedy in 2001, where terrorist attacks destroyed the WTC and the Pentagon, Muslims were widely represented as terrorists in American media. However, the representation of Muslims began to change from 2017 to 2022 in popular culture such as films and TV series. Instead of being depicted as terrorists or "bad guys," Muslims started to be portrayed more positively as "good guys" in some movies. It is worth questioning what factors or circumstances led to this change in the depiction of Muslims in American popular culture. Through a transnational approach, the authors find that the shift in perception of Muslim characters is a utilization of current popular culture trends, which emphasize diversity to meet American audience preferences, resulting in several globalization consequences. These consequences include the formation of a Muslim image adjusted to American standards, often conflicting with Islamic culture, and the homogenization of Muslim culture, which is often reduced or even omitted in Muslim characters in films. In short, the shift in perception of Muslim portrayals in American popular culture is based on three interrelated factors: capitalism, representation, and globalization.

Tribally owned American Indian enterprises provide a unique cross-cultural setting for emerging Native American business leaders. This article examines the manner in which American Indian leaders negotiate the boundaries between their indigenous organizations and the nonindigenous communities in which they do business. Through a series of qualitative interviews, we find that American Indian business leaders fall back on a strong sense of “self,” which allows them to maintain effective leadership across boundaries. This is highly consistent with theories of authentic leadership. Furthermore, we find that leaders define self through their collective identity, which is heavily influenced by tribal affiliation and tribal culture. We add to the literature on authentic leadership by showing the role that culture and collective identity have in creating leader authenticity within the indigenous community.

Abstract Giles Blunt’s Cardinal police-procedural novels and their recent television adaptations evidence the noir genre’s sombre aesthetic, focus on a morally tainted hero, are preoccupied with seemingly irrational violence, and fixate on unresolved past injustices. In doing so, they reflect Canada’s aesthetic and ethical relationship to questions of national and transnational culture, colonial territoriality, and the moral principles at stake in the representation of violence. This Canadian ‘re-branding’ of noir features is haunted by deep-seated historical dissension and the present-day repercussions that are at the heart of the country’s national identity. Focusing on the first season of Cardinal (2017) and the novel from which it was adapted, Forty Words for Sorrow (2002), this essay examines the series’ stylish – if conflicted – reworking of noir’s roots in American crime fiction and film, and its use of contemporary Nordic influences, which work to salvage a form of Canadian cultural authenticity from the cultural dominance of US television and film crime dramas.

Episodic memory for specific personal events is a fundamental human cognitive faculty. Yet it is variably valued across cultures and may thus have different implications for psychological well-being. In a series of studies, we investigated the consequences of cultural fit in detailed episodic recall for psychological well-being among healthy adults and children from European American and East Asian cultural backgrounds. Participants recalled recent and distant personal events (Studies 1, 2, and 3) or recent positive and negative events (Study 4). The findings showed that culture moderated the relation of episodic memory to various aspects of mental health and well-being. Whereas detailed recall was linked to decreased use of avoidant coping among European Americans, it was associated with elevated depressive symptoms, decreased adaptive skills, and increased negative affect among East Asians. The findings support the person-culture-fit framework and suggest that the functional significance of episodic memory depends on cultural contexts.

The aim of this study is to explore two sets of widely used English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks in Iran – an American ESL series known as Top Notch and an indigenous Iranian series of high school EFL textbooks known as Vision – in terms of their representation of multicultural elements at the surface and deep cultural levels, and their potential to promote language learners’ intercultural communicative competence (ICC). Interpretive content analysis is used to identify the cultural patterns in the ELT textbooks. The findings reveal that the Vision series only limitedly presents cultural elements associated with both the local and international community, and covers fewer categories and subcategories of cultural elements, whether at the surface level or at the deep level of culture. In addition, its deep culture representation is confined to the local (i.e., Iranian or Islamic) cultures. In contrast, the Top Notch series presents many cultural elements associated with the international community and embraces more categories and subcategories at the surface level. It also includes more multicultural elements at the deep level. Consequently, the Vision series limits the development of language learners’ ICC, while the Top Notch series is a better resource for multicultural education and intercultural communication. One common ground between the two series, however, is that they both present culture mostly at the surface level; thus, both series could benefit from the incorporation of more cultural elements at the deep level. This study deals with the cultural features that are presented in these two series.

This research examines five issues taken from the first volume of the Ms. Marvel comic book series. The paper discusses the reason why this series is substantial in the struggle of Muslim immigrants to survive as a minority group in the United States. This study aims to examine the novel Banaat ar-Riyadh (Girls of Riyadh) from the perspective of globalization using a postcolonial approach. This novel was written by Rajaa Alsanea, a Riyadhi girl who moved to the United States of America and then published her novel in Lebanon. The novel was written in the form of a series of electronic mails sent by four young Riyadhi girls who discuss the contestation between traditional Saudi Arabian norms and American norms. Fittingly, this study uses postcolonial theory, with the theoretical framework of globalization as a basis for investigating the aspects identified in the theory, such as mimicry, inferiority, and hybridity, and applies deductive qualitative method from a globalization perspective. The results of this study indicate the influence of American culture on the lives of Saudi Arabians. The influence of American culture is obtained through Saudi people, both men and women, who study and work in the United States. It is the relationship between Arab culture and American culture that influences the Arab way of thinking, which leads to certain behavioral changes. Some Arabs, previously compliant to their traditional values, display behavorial changes that are inspired by Americans, especially American women. Arab women who are supposed to constantly obey state rules, want changes which they adopt from American culture.

When Kenneth Clark did his monumental Civilisation series for the BBC some thirty years ago he subtitled it "A Personal View," which really amounts to an oxymoron, as if a survey of some two thousand years of western culture could be anything else. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., scholar-celebrity, chair of Harvard University's Afro-American studies program, director of the W.E.B. DuBois Institute for Afro-American Research, MacArthur Foundation fellow, frequent contributor to the New Yorker magazine, and author of the award winning The Signifying Monkey: A Theory of Afro-American Literary Criticism, recalls the influence that series had on a young and impressionable "Skip" Gates growing up in Piedmont, West Virginia.
