This research is devoted to the analysis of stylistic peculiarities of phonovariants of words of foreign origin in Russian and Uzbek. It is aimed at the investigation of the stylistic values of phonovariants of the borrowed words in the Russian and Uzbek languages and substantiation of the isomorphic and allomorphic features of such language units in comparison. So as to achieve the aim of the research, several objectives of the research are set: identification of the current status of the research problem; review of related literature; analysis of stylistic peculiarities of phonovariants of the words of foreign origin in compared languages; substantiation of isomorphism and allomorphism of honostylistic features of borrowed words in Russian and Uzbek; discussion of stylistic potential of phonovariants of the words of foreign origin in compared languages.

The article reflects the main results of comparative-typological study concerning the organization of terminological phrases on the basis of four closely related languages - French, Spanish, Italian and Romanian. Attention is focused on the study of theme-rheme organization of phrases on the material of multilingual and bilingual dictionaries in some of the most priority areas of electronics and electrical engineering. Despite the isomorphism of the studied languages, the complex use of a number of methods (comparative-typological method, quantitative analysis, actual division method, questioning of specialist informants) allowed to detect several allomorphic features in the theme-rheme organization of their word combinations. They consist in the use of possessive and definite articles, prepositions, and ordinal numbers. The presence of possessive articles in the Romanian language is recognized as the most striking allomorphic property, thanks to which theme-rheme organization of a Romanian word-combination becomes more transparent in comparison with other Romance languages. The importance of the study of allomorphic features of languages for lexicography, theory and practice of translation is emphasized.

Objective - The objective of this paper is to explore and understand the motivators of institutionalization of Performance Measurement Systems (PMS) in the Indonesian Local Government (ILG), particularly in the Batu municipality presenting the performance paradoxes. Performance accountability issues have been encouraging the Batu municipality to implement PMS since the beginning of the 2000s. Methodology/Technique - The theoretical framework and interpretation of this study are adopted from the institutional theory (coercive, mimetic, normative, and allomorphism) which is used to analyze the phenomenon. The researchers employ a single case study to scrutinize the motivators of institutionalization by elaborating on document analysis conducted from the interviews of 10 employees in a different range of management levels (top, middle, and lower). Findings - The results of this study reveal that exogenous (coercive, mimetic and normative) and endogenous (allomorphism) drivers encourage the institutionalization of PMS in the Batu municipality with coercive pressure as a major driver and allomorphism as a mere ceremonial driver (rather than an instrument). Novelty - The practical implications of this study can be used to improve the PMS process and the quality of performance reporting in the Batu municipality and in other local governments. This paper is also expected to fill the gap in existing literature on the implementation of PMS within a developing country (in this case, Indonesia). Type of Paper: Empirical Paper. The paper deals with the problem of lacunarity, that is, the allomorphism of languages of different structures on heterogeneous material: translations of different times, lexicographic sources and opinion poll data of native speakers of the same language who study Russian, ways of eliminating lacunae at various historical stages in the development of the lexical system of different languages and the mismatch of signs of nomination, and also describes vector lacunarity in the speech etiquette of the Russian language from the point of view of translation into Arabic. The main approaches to the study of the phenomenon of lacunarity in modern linguistics are considered. A typology of lacunarity is proposed based on the material of languages with different structures.

Many cases of allomorphic alternation are restricted to specific lexical items but at the same time show a regular phonological distribution. Standard approaches cannot deal with these cases because they must either resort to diacritic features or list regular phonological contexts as idiosyncratic. These problems can be overcome if we assume that allomorphs are lexically organized as a partially ordered set. If no ordering is established, allomorphic choice is determined by the phonology—in particular, by the emergence of the unmarked (TETU). In other cases, TETU effects are insufficient, and lexical ordering determines the preference for dominant allomorphs.

При введении классификации типов билингвальных личностей авторов проводится также сопоставительный анализ презентации базовых концептов красота и русский язык в индивидуальных концептосферах авторов для выявления сходства и различия их мировосприятия в традиции описания семиозиса – семантики, синтактики и прагматики. Idiostyles of bilingual persons, authors of precedent artworks by A. S. Pushkin, L. N. Tolstoy, Abai Kunanbayev and V. V. Nabokov are analysed as part of functional-semiotic scientific paradigm for the detection features of isomorphism and allomorphism in national and individual pictures of the world. Сontrastive analysis of the presentations of basic concepts BEAUTY and RUSSIAN LANGUAGE is also studied in the individual authors conceptual spheres to identify similarities and differences of their view of the world in the tradition of describing semiosis – semantics, syntactics and pragmatics.

The aim of the study is to determine the features of expressing the category of simultaneity by present tense forms in English and Russian languages. The article identifies the verb forms in both languages that participate in expressing simultaneity, considers different types of simultaneity, and presents examples of their use. The scientific novelty of the study consists in identifying verbal means of expressing temporality on the example of the category of simultaneity. Isomorphism is manifested in the fact that both languages use the conjunction “when”, which explicitly expresses the meaning of simultaneity in polypredicative complexes. Allomorphism is manifested in the fact that the potential for expressing simultaneity by present tense forms is significantly higher in Russian than in English. The coincidence of the tense forms of the predicates leads to the expression of complete, unlimited simultaneity, and the use of different tense forms – to the implementation of partial simultaneity. The results obtained showed that the present tense in Russian and English can express both limited and unlimited simultaneity.

Fulfulde as a language of the Fulve is widely spoken across the Fulaphones. Its grammar, notwithstanding, has been described to an extent, including morphology, leaving a dearth of research in the morphological manifestations. Though, Hussaini (forthcoming,) presented an analysis of allomorphic variations of Fulfulde singular suffix morphemes. In view of this, we attempt to undertake this research with the hope to fill the existing gap between singular and plural suffix variations. Therefore, paper looks at the allomorphic variations of Fulfulde plural suffix morphemes by the way of suffixation method. The data are mainly drawn from Mohammed (2015) and other from native speakers intuition. The study reveals that among the six plural suffix morphemes namely; Ve, Xe, Xi, Kon, Ko, and Koy the first three (Ve, Xe and Xi) preserve allomorph suffix variations while the last three are not characterized with any allomorphs. The paper uncovered that Ve, Xe, and Xi took regular allomorph variants contrary to Mohammed (2015) study who claimed that they are plural forms independently. Therefore, the paper maintained that /-en/suffix is an allomorph of ve plural class, /-e/, /-le/, /-je/ are allomorphs of Xe plural class whereas /-i/, /-li/ and /-ji/ are allomorphs of Xi plural class form respectively, all which are in complimentary distributions.

AbstractPhonological characteristics and frequencies of stems and allomorphs have been explored as possible factors causing differences in production accuracies between allomorphic forms. However, previous findings are not consistent and the relative contributions of these factors are unclear. This study investigated target and erroneous productions of the Dutch diminutive, which has five allomorphs with varying type frequencies and of which the selection depends on the phonological characteristics of the stems. Typically developing children (N = 115, 5;1–10;3) were tested on their production of real and nonce diminutives. Linear mixed effects modelling was used to analyse the data taking nonverbal IQ into account. Type frequencies of the allomorphs and differences in phonological characteristics of the stems were found to be related to differences in production accuracies between the allomorphs. However, phonological characteristics of the stems appeared to have a bigger impact, mainly due to the phonological complexity of these characteristics.

The aim of the research is to identify the features of the functioning of adjectives in Russian and English that contribute to expressing the semantics of precedence within an utterance. The paper provides an analysis of English and Russian adjectives that realize the semantics of precedence. The study highlights a group of adjectives with the temporal semantics that function as adverbial modifiers expressing precedence at the level of deep structure, while at the level of surface structure, they serve the syntactic function of attributive modifiers. The scientific novelty lies in identifying the spectrum of English and Russian adjectives as non-verbal means of expressing precedence actualizing the temporal semantics of an utterance. It is found that in both languages, adjectives explicitly express the semantics of precedence and at the level of deep structure correspond to adverbs functioning as temporal modifiers. The most frequent adjective in English is ‘previous’, in Russian it is ‘предыдущий’ (previous). Adjectives like ‘former’, ‘бывший’ are characterized by their combination with personal names and organizations to represent their preceding state or position. Allomorphism is manifested in the presence of adjectives with distinctive features expressing precedence.

Amylose, the linear constituent of starch, consists of α(1,4)-linked glucose monomers. Although weakly involved in the crystalline structure of starch, it can be recrystallized in a variety of allomorphic types, including those encountered in native starch (A- and B-types). Amylose can either be extracted from starch or produced in vitro by enzymatic synthesis using amylosucrase or phosphorylase. Recrystallization and self-association of amylose in aqueous solutions have been widely studied to understand both the crystallization of starch during biosynthesis and the structural changes that occur during starch processing. Depending on the chain length, concentration, and temperature, gels, spherulites, or lamellar crystals can be formed with A or B allomorphic type. Other ligand-dependent allomorphs (the various V-types) are obtained when amylose is complexed with molecules such as alcohols, lipids, or flavours. Amylose also self-associates into networks, spherulites, or axialites during in-vitro enzymatic synthesis by amylosucrase. When a highly branched acceptor like glycogen is used, dendritic nanoparticles are formed by elongation of the external chains. The recrystallization of amylose extracted from starch and the self-association of amylose during its in-vitro synthesis are described. The amylose properties are discussed in terms of polymer behaviour and model systems to investigate the structure and formation of starch granules.

"The present study aims to investigate the influence of factors such as the source of cellulose and cellulose extraction and acid hydrolysis conditions on the partial polymorphic transition of Cellulose I to the allomorphic form Cellulose II in cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). CNCs were obtained from cellulose fibers extracted from four agro-industrial residues in Ethiopia: teff straw (TS), enset fiber (EF), sugarcane bagasse (SB) and coffee hull (CH). The cellulose fibers were extracted under chlorine-free extraction conditions, comprising alkaline pretreatment (with 17.5% (w/v) sodium hydroxide), then hydrolyzed with 64% (w/w) sulfuric acid to synthesize the CNCs. The as-obtained CNCs were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The XRD results revealed the CNCs isolated from cellulose fibers of EF and SB contained Cellulose I and II allomorphs like their cellulose precursors, but no Cellulose II was found in CH-CNCs. Morphological and dimensional studies of the CNCs by TEM showed shorter needle-shaped nanoscale structures. Higher alkaline conditions, with 17.5% sodium hydroxide, might not necessarily contribute to the polymorphic transition in lignocellulosic materials with higher lignin content, as evidenced in CH. Generally, the formation of Cellulose I and II allomorphs in the as-obtained CNCs was dependent on the cellulose source and cellulose extraction conditions, and less influenced by sulfuric acid hydrolysis."

The article examines the Spanish and Ukrainian languages in a comparative aspect. An attempt is made to consider these languages in terms of their origin and the possibility of multiple comparison. Is proposed a comprehensive research method based on the symbiosis of historical, typological, taxonomic, semantic and pragmatic approaches. In contemporary linguistics, there are a number of general linguistic techniques and methods for comparing linguistic structures. Today, linguists are expanding the scope of comparative research. Lately they resort to the discursive aspect, which makes it possible to carry out comparative linguistic analysis at the communicative, pragmatic, cognitive, linguo-cultural and linguo-ethnic levels. The comparative method verifies the value and continuous development of modern research of Ukrainian scientists in the field of linguistics, which, without a doubt, will contribute to the intensification of the process of learning foreign languages and the improvement of the training of translators highly rated. The use of the comparative taxonomic research method allows us to carry out an analysis of multiple aspects at any language level and find isomorphic nuances of the functional-semantic and structural level when comparing linguistic phenomena in two or more languages at both levels, whether synchronic or diachronic. Currently, genealogical, typological and territorial areas are considered the current areas of language systematization. Each of the directions is characterized by its own approaches, methods and criteria of discursive research. Thus, the genealogical approach involves taking into account historical factors, thanks to which it is possible to identify family links between the analyzed languages. The typological approach allows, in turn, to classify languages, according to linguistic type, according to the taxonomic criteria of structural kinship or non-kinship. Furthermore, linguistic typology deals with the study of type, universals, isomorphism and allomorphism in language. And finally, the territorial approach to the classification takes into account the principle of regional research, the aim of which is to study languages that have been in close contact for a long time and even under the influence of linguistic convergence.

Linguistic typology, as one of the main areas of language analysis, is focused on the study of the structural and functional features of at least two languages, regardless of the presence/absence of genetic kinship between them. This is one of the essential criteria that distinguish linguistic typology from comparative-historical studies in ontological and epistemological terms, that is, each of these directions has its own, clearly defined subject, principles and methods of research. Linguistic typology is capable of covering a wider range of general regularities and phenomena that are common to each of the compared languages. At the same time, the identified isomorphic features can be considered as general typological regularities inherent in the structure of the language, and not only as classification features. That is, at this level of analysis of linguistic units, the process of synthesis takes place during the study of the organization and classification of sound, word, sentence, and suprasyntactic units. Genealogical, typological and territorial are considered to be the current directions of systematization of languages in linguistics. Each of the directions is characterized by its own approaches, methods and research criteria in language research. The genealogical approach involves taking into account historical factors, thanks to which it is possible to identify family ties between the languages under analysis. The typological approach makes it possible to classify languages by linguistic type, according to the taxonomic criteria of structural relatedness or non-relatedness, similarity or dissimilarity, presence or absence of similar features between languages, regardless of their historical origin, territorial distribution and close or distant geographical location. In addition, linguistic typology deals with the study of type in language, language universals, isomorphism, amorphousness, allomorphism in language. The territorial approach to classification takes into account the principle of areal research, the purpose of which is to study languages that have been in close contact for a long time and even came under the influence of language convergence.

The paper presents the research of ethnic peculiarities of conceptualization of reality, objectified with the help of culturally marked words denoting a widow, which form the corresponding parts of the German, Ukrainian, and English language world models. The purpose of the research is to give a contrastive analysis of the verbalizations of the concept WIDOW in the German, Ukrainian, and English linguocultures.
The paper uses a comprehensive methodology that combines the following methods: contrastive – to identify common and distinctive features of the concept WIDOW in the languages under comparison; conceptual-semiotic analysis – to reveal the cognitive mechanisms of the embodiment of the concept; contextual-interpretive analysis – to clarify the peculiarities of the representation of the concept in paremiae.
In the highlight of contrastive ethnolinguistic studies and theory of conceptual analysis, a structure-semantic reconstruction of the concept WIDOW is performed, and the principles of its semantic-conceptual organization in the German, English, and Ukrainian language pictures of the world are revealed. The set of the conceptual and semantic marks is determined, due to the concept structure constituents (conceptual proper, imagery-associative and value), the main ideographic conceptual domains are revealed, the analyzed concept being axiologically marked and its associative linkage, due to the scope of its conceptual correlates, are determined. Factors that influence the conceptualization of the objective reality by the given ethnic groups are determined. Certain ethnocultural and ethnolinguistic peculiarities and general characteristics of verbalization of the concept WIDOW peculiar to the languages under study are found out.
The analyses of widow nominations showed the allomorphism of national peculiarities of conceptualization of reality, which are influenced by archetype types, historical and cultural actuality. It is shown that WIDOW in Ukrainian culture can be viewed as a taboo concept which content is marked by negative axiological status due to the socio-cultural views formed in the period predetermining the inadmissibility of its direct naming in relevant social situations.

The study is focused on the hypothesis that the boundary between morphology and phonology is where a large portion of allomorphic diversity is located. The basic assumption is that phonology can affect the choice of allomorphs for reasons pertaining to phonological naturalness, preferences in language with regard to syllable patterns, stress location, or both. Additionally, Optimality Theory is expected to provide a more satisfactory explanation for the phenomenon compared to Distributed Morphology, as it permits phonology to surpass morphology in both theoretical and practical aspects. Since Saturday is the most action-packed day of the football season and hosts many English Premier League matches at once, six "Saturday Football" pages from the BBC were included in the corpus obtained for this research. Though there is a phonological conditioning allmorphy in the past form (-ed), which can be articulated as /t/, /d/, or /id/, it is only present in the six pages of "Saturday Football" sport commentary.

Abstract The choice of theme vowels in Spanish nouns and adjectives can be predicted neither from the phonological shape of roots nor from syntactic features like gender. However, this state of affairs does not require the postulation of inflectional class features. The alternative is for the Spanish lexicon to store stems with their theme vowels, instead of roots annotated with declension diacritics; default generalizations over the lexical entries of stems can be expressed by means of lexical redundancy rules. The hypothesis of stem storage is compatible with the failure of Spanish theme vowels to surface in certain environments: this is demonstrably caused by an entirely general and regular phonological process deleting unaccented stem-final vowels before suffixes beginning with another vowel. Stem storage receives further support from psycholinguistic data from recognition latencies. Additional new evidence comes from cyclic locality conditions on allomorph selection, as shown by an analysis of the well-known stress-driven alternation displayed by items like [kont-á-ɾ] ‘count.inf’ ∼ [kwént-a] ‘count. 3sg’. In derivatives like 〚N 〚V kont-a〛 ðóɾ-∅〛 ‘counter’, assuming that diphthongal allomorphy is a property of the root incorrectly predicts that the choice of allomorph will be determined in the first cycle: i.e. *[kwentaðóɾ]. The locality problem vanishes if /koNt-a/ and /kweNt-a/ are both listed in the lexicon as stem allomorphs. These data show that Stratal Optimality Theory allied to a stem-driven theory of morphology performs better than alternative approaches to allomorphic locality. Root-driven Distributed Morphology is too local: the domains for allomorph selection that it generates are too narrow. Conversely, noncyclic versions of Optimality Theory fail to predict allomorphic locality (even if they can describe its effects) because they endow allomorph selection with unrestricted access to the global environment.

Derivational morphology form new words either by changing the meaning of the base to which they are attached, or by changing the word classes .The present study aims at investigating affixation in English language versus in Kurdish language as a significant comparative analysis. According to a genetic factor (i.e. genetic similarities), both languages are descended from Indo – European Language Family. Section one deals with the introduction that sheds light on the derivational morphology. The purpose of the study to create new words, the limitation of the study, the method of research is a comparative study to shed light on similarities and dissimilarities between English and Kurdish and the significance of the study for non – native learners and educators as a second language in both languages English and Kurdish. Section two consists of the definitions of morphology, morphological terms such as derivation versus inflection, root, base, morpheme, types of morphemes, two diagrams of subdivision of morphology and different types of affixation , ( prefix, infix, suffix ) and allomorphs, allomorphic forms, the rules of word formation. There are four ways of derivation to change the meaning and category ; affixation is one of them. Section three points out the comparative analysis of the types of affixation in English language versus Kurdish language, it comes up with some significant points. At the end the study presents references and websites.

The article presents a comparative analysis of the semantic portraits of the singer and the cultural hero Wainamoinen in two English translations of the epic “Kalevala” made by William Forsell Kirby and John Martin Crawford. Following a certain algorithm, the different-structured nominations of the hero are classified and subjected to component analysis, through which an inventory of semes and semes’ specifiers is fixed, which allows to identify isomorphic and allomorphic characteristics in the portraits of the hero. The study shows that the dominant position in the semantic portrait of Wainamoinen is occupied by the so-called song space of the hero, since singing is the main activity of Wainamoinen by means of which he influences the surrounding world. The semantic portrait of Wainamoinen is a four-level structure, including nominations (1) characterizing him as a singer, (2) characterizing his singing, (3) characterizing the process of his singing and (4) characterizing functions of his singing. The study also demonstrates an importance of nominations which have the structure of a sentence and super-phrasal unity. They allow to fix additional semes in lexical nominations. The article concludes that the semantic allomorphs of Wainamoinen’s portrait characteristics are determined by both linguistic aspects (the choice of the source text for translation: original text in the Finnish language and the interlinear translation in German) and extralinguistic aspects: differences between British and American lingua cultures and personal preferences of each translator.

This study is on linguistics, that is, morphology. It aims to describe the morphemes and allomorphs of the Bidayuh-Somu Language. The study is descriptive, that is, documentary analysis. The data of this study is secondary, a-ready-to-use data, taken from a doctoral dissertation. It is an example sorted based on morphemes and allomorphs of the language. Since the language is indigenous and not in written form, the data is phonemic and morphemic transcription. As a limitation, the data is only morphemes with allomorphs. The sole morpheme with zero allomorphs is not included in this study. As an exemplification, this study describes the morphemes that are nominal and verbal. They are prefix {puN-} and circumfix {niN-ŋeh}. The allomorph of the morpheme for this current study is the element of nasalization consisting of the phoneme /m-/, /n-/, /ŋ-/, and /ɲ-/, and alternants. ABSTRACTThe aim of the present study was to investigate whether the recognition speed of Finnish nominal base forms varies as a function of their paradigmatic complexity (stem allomorphy) or productivity status. Nikolaev et al. (2014) showed that words with greater stem allomorphy from an unproductive inflectional class are recognized faster than words with lower stem allomorphy from a productive inflectional class. Productivity of an inflectional paradigm correlates with the number of stem allomorphs in languages like Finnish in that unproductive inflectional classes tend to have higher stem allomorphy. We wanted to distinguish which of these two characteristics provides the benefit to speed of recognition found by Nikolaev et al. (2014). The current study involved a lexical decision task comparing three categories of words: unproductive with three or more stem allomorphs, unproductive with two stem allomorphs, and productive with two stem allomorphs. We observed a facilitation effect for word recognition only for unproductive words with three or more stem allomorphs, but not for unproductive words with two allomorphs. This effect was observed particularly in words of low to moderate familiarity. The findings suggest that high stem allomorphy, rather than productivity of the inflectional class, is driving the facilitation effect in word recognition.

AbstractThe paper first questions the traditional assumption that all derivations are in fact ‘derived’ from more basic forms. Examples of such ‘shared allomorphy’ are examined from diverse areas of Modern Greek morphology, such as de-verbal Nominals, plural-extensions, loss of voiced spirants in Cypriot, and initial vowel-loss. We conclude that allomorphs have independent status, but are (as in Burzio 1998) more or less closely/distantly interrelated, so that there is no need for the notion ‘derived from’ or even the prime ‘paradigm’. The paper goes on to ask how semantic ambiguities arise in complex verbs, comparing the idiosyncratic vs. cumulative readings provoked by one and the same prefix. To answer the question we adopt a syntax-based analysis (as in Marantz 2001) for all complex forms, extending this approach to so-called ‘incorporation’ for Greek.

The fact that teaching English in Indonesia is still driven by textbooks makes not many students have the ability to communicate in English and even they often experience mispronunciation. This study was conducted to find out how to teach allomorphs as a provision to strengthen knowledge of English pronunciation. In addition, this study also seeks to reveal how the challenges faced by EFL teachers in the Allomorph learning process. There are 3 stages that the teacher can do to teach allomorphs through narrative texts; introduction to phonetic symbols, reading the text, and analyzing and practicing the types of allomorphs. From the use of the selected narrative text, it reveals 3 types of allomorphs from 4 types that have been introduced to students in the form of past tense, plural number, and regular possessive. Some of the challenges and problems faced by EFL teachers in teaching English pronunciation, especially allomorphs, is the lack of student motivation to learn. In addition, EFL teachers still hold on to the old philosophy about the lack of importance of learning pronunciation, making this teaching even more difficult. The lack of class hours and the large number of students in EFL classes are also challenges for teachers.

The Afrikaans diminutive suffix surfaces as one of four allomorphs determined by complex prosodic and segmental interactions including stem augmentation, stem modification in form of diphthongization, and notably bidirectional place assimilation and segmental deletion. This paper presents an analysis in Harmonic Serialism (Prince & Smolensky 1993/2004, McCarthy 2000) that derives the surface allomorphs from an underlying representation /-ʲki/. The analysis departs from Wissing’s (1971) rule-based treatment in rejecting phonologically-conditioned allomorphs in favor of a single underlying form which is subject to phonological derivation and in treating diphthongization as the realization of underlying palatal features following Bye (2013).

Abstract In 2018 the World Health Organisation listed influenza pandemics as one of the top threats to global health. Influenza pandemics occur as a result of the emergence of antigenically distinct strains, which arise due to genomic re-assortment or through the acquisition of mutations. The resulting strains have different antigenic make-ups and implicate the ability of the immune system to respond quickly following infection. Particular HLA class II allomorphs including HLA-DRB1*07:01 have been linked with the occurrence of severe influenza infections and non-response to the influenza vaccine. However, other allomorphs such as HLA-DRB1*11:01 have been shown to be protective in viral diseases such as HIV and HCV, and might be important for influenza infection. The mechanism surrounding these associations of influenza infection and HLA class II molecules expression is unclear. As some individuals expressing particular HLA allomorphs are at a greater risk of developing severe influenza infection, further investigation into the mechanism of this association is warranted. Through stimulating T cells from donors expressing HLA-DRB1*11:01 or HLA-DRB1*07:01 with an influenza epitope (HA) derived from pandemic and epidemic influenza strains, we determined the level of cross-reactivity, phenotype and polyfunctionality of the responding CD4+ specific T cells. We have compared different allomorphs and provide the first insight into the molecular basis of influenza epitope recognition by different HLA class II allomorphs, and its functional impact.

AbstractCanadian Raising—the phonetic changes in vowel quality and quantity in the diphthongs /ai/ and/ au/ before voiceless consonants—has been of considerable importance to phonological theories ever since Joos (1975). The opaque interaction of Canadian Raising and flapping in words such as writer consitutes one of the main arguments for rule ordering in phonology (Chomsky and Halle 1968; Chambers 1975). Recently, Mielke, Armstrong, and Hume (2003) have challenged Joos’s phonemic splitting analysis and have argued that Canadian Raising, rather than being a productive phonological process, is a static lexicalized generalization implemented as a choice between allomorphic variants. A rebuttal to this allomorphic analysis is offered based on evidence that, for some speakers, Canadian Raising productively applies in novel morphological contexts, in language games, and in the phrasal phonology, none of which are amenable to an allomorphic analysis.

Within standard generative phonology, the distribution of the allomorphs of the Italian masculine definite article has been related strictly to features of the initial segment/cluster of the lexical item following the article. Two main drawbacks characterize such analysis. First, they crucially depend on abstract principles, which are not applied in a very insightful and empirically convincing fashion. Second, they cannot explain the (inter- and intra-) individual variation in the selection of the allomorphs or the changes in their distributional pattern. Conversely, an analysis based on the usage-based framework proposed by Bybee (2001) allows for a more straightforward and unified account of the distribution of the allomorphs and offers new insight to the issues of change and individual variation.

Abstract This article addresses the question of Old English alternations with a view to identifying instances of allomorphic variation attributable to the loss of motivation and the subsequent morphologization of alternations. The focus is on the strong verb and its derivatives, in such a way that the alternations in which the strong verb partakes can be predicted on the basis of phonological principles, whereas allomorphic variation with respect to the strong verb base is unpredictable. Out of 304 derivational paradigms based on strong verbs and comprising 4,853 derivatives, 478 instances have been found of phonologically motivated vocalic alternations. The conclusion is reached that the most frequent alternations are those that have /a/ as source and those with /y/ as target, because /a/ is the point of departure of i-mutation and /y/ its point of arrival. Sixteen instances of allomorphic variation have also been found, of which /e/ ~ /eo/, /e/ ~ /ea/ and /i/ ~ /e/ are relatively frequent.

The phonon properties and thermodynamics of four crystalline cellulose allomorphs, Iα, Iβ, II, and III1, have been investigated using dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT). In line with experimental findings, the free energy differences between the studied cellulose allomorphs are small, less than 1 kJ/mol per atom. The calculated specific heat at constant volume (Cv) has been compared with the available experimental data in the temperature range 10–300 K. Quasiharmonic approximation has been employed to study thermodynamics and specific heat at constant pressure (Cp). For the studied temperature range of 10–400 K, the specific heat of all cellulose allomorphs shows very similar behavior. The calculated and experimental specific heat agree well at low temperatures below 100 K, but the deviation between theory and experiment increases with temperature. This may be due to increasing phonon anharmonicity as the temperature increases.

The maN- and paN- are some affixes in Banjarese language that manifest the occurrence of homorganic nasal assimilation when forming allomorphs. But in some allomorphs, such as ma- and pa-, the nasal segment was completely deleted from the affixes. This study aims to provide a rational explanation for the deletion of the nasal segment in both allomorphs. A set of base words was retrieved from a dictionary, and respondents were chosen to recite each word as well as the derived word after it received the affixes. The ma- and pa- were formed as a result of each prefix being followed by a sonorant segment, both consonant and vowel. This is different from the Malay language, which only allows nasal segments to be deleted when a sonorant consonant follows them. This study is hoped to add some value to the previous studies as well as become a pioneer for upcoming studies.

Malay is a language from the Austronesian family and unlike the Indo-European-originated English, it does not generally have inflectional temporal markers. Investigating this from a cross-linguistics - influence perspective, differences between the languages could mean difficulties for Malay speakers to acquire features of English. The objectives of this study are to investigate Malay speakers’ pronunciation of the English language –ed allomorphs – [d], [t] and [ɪd]/[əd] – and the relationship between the morphophonological forms and two types of linguistic knowledge, one of which is implicit while the other is explicit. Data were collated from fifty participants who are social science undergraduates and English majors who speak English as a second language. Four instruments were used to gauge the respondents’ verbal use of –ed allomorphs as well as their implicit and explicit knowledge of the allomorphs. Results indicate that the students’ verbal usage of the target items either lacks approximation to Standard English pronunciation or is largely dropped altogether. Results also suggest a moderate relationship between implicit and explicit knowledge of the allomorphs and their verbal production by Malay speakers of English. The finding illuminates acquisition problem of English language speakers whose mother tongue does not share similar inflectional markers. Pedagogical solutions can help learners of the English language to approximate Standard English and in the long run, enhance effective communication and increase chances of employability.

The article stresses the importance of Vygotsky?s postulates on evolution and history for understanding his developmental theory, focusing especially on his thesis on the clear-cut replacement of evolution by history. That thesis shaped the general theoretical plane consisting of several opposing and almost mutually exclusive pairs of solutions, such as biology - culture, individual - collective, animal - human, evolution - history etc. Such general solutions offer too narrow a framework for elaborating a theory of ontogenesis. This is the background on which the true meaning of the postulate of allomorphic development is presented, along with an analysis of several more specific related theses. The article ends with a critical review of Vygotsky?s general postulates, pointing out to the ideological dimension of his developmental psychology.

The paper investigates the root suppletion phenomena with its direct relation to the theory of allomorphic locality as it is couched in the Distributed Morphology (DM) framework (Halle & Marantz 1993, 1994) and its recent developments. The paper covers the suppletion phenomena of two varieties, those conditioned by the number of an internal argument and tense-aspect-mood (TAM) features of functional heads merging above roots. The empirical data is brought up to support the main claim that the suppletion of verbal roots can be conditioned not only by the most local elements such as the number of the internal argument, but it can also be triggered by the TAM features of the functional heads which are outside of the XP boundary where the roots are merged (Harley et al. 2009, Bobaljik 2012, Harley 2015 among others). To account for the TAM-conditioned suppletion, the paper is using the phase-theoretic approach following Chomsky (1999) and Embick (2010) by positing a variety of non-cyclic heads merging above roots that render the interaction between TAM features and roots possible even though some of the intervening heads between roots and these features may be overtly realized. The paper arrives at the conclusion that the suppletion can still be triggered by the local material converging with other authors mentioned above.

In this article, I aim to account for the linguistic geography of 2pl allomorphs and their possible linguistic factors.

This research describes suffixes in Kulisusu language from the side of meaning and allomorph that is formed in the morphophonemic process. This research is descriptive-qualitative. Data analysis was used the referential (identity) method through sorting or classification based on the characteristics and description of the data. The meanings and evidence of morphophonemic in affixation were defined and compared to see its pattern so that can be categorized variation of suffix forms. According to the data analysis, there are 7 suffixes in Kulisusu languages. Suffix {-a} have 11 allomorphs, suffix {-i} have have 11 allomorphs, and suffix {-ako} have 10 allomorphs. Meanwhile, 4 suffixes, that are, {-o} only have 2 allomorphs, {-ano} have 2 allomorphs. Suffix {-mo} and {-no} respectively only has 1 allomorph. Those suffixes if attached to the base generally pertaining to the forming of the imperative verbs which have a meaning like ‘do something’, ‘make something, and give into something’. Besides, it can also form nouns that meaning related to ‘tool’, ‘place’, and ‘time’.Penelitian ini mendeskripsikan sufiks bahasa Kulisusu dari segi makna dan alomorf yang terbentuk dalam proses morfofonemik. Penelitian ini bersifat kualitatif deskriptif. Dalam melakukan analisis data digunakan metode padan referensial melalui pemilahan atau pengklasifikasian berdasarkan ciri-ciri, sifat-sifat, dan gambaran data. Makna dan bukti-bukti morfofonemik dalam afiksasi didefinisikan dan dibandingkan untuk melihat pola yang terbentuk sehingga dapat dikategorikan variasi bentuk-bentuk sufiks. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa sufiks bahasa Kulisusu ada tujuh. Sufiks {-a} memiliki 11 alomorf, sufiks {-i} memiliki 11 alomorf, dan sufiks {-ako} memiliki 10 alomorf. Sementara, empat sufiks lainnya, yaitu sufiks {-o} hanya memiliki 2 alomorf, sufiks {-ano} memiliki 2 alomorf, serta sufiks {-mo} dan {-no} masing-masing memiliki 1 alomorf. Sufiks-sufiks tersebut jika melekat pada bentuk dasar umumnya berkaitan dengan pembentukan verba imperatif yang bermakna ‘melakukan pekerjaan, ‘membuat sesuatu’, dan ‘memberi ke sesuatu’. Sufiks tersebut juga membentuk nomina yang maknanya berkaitan dengan ‘alat’, ‘tempat’ dan ‘masa’.

The article is devoted to the research of ethnic peculiarities of reality conceptualization, objectified with the help of culturally marked words denoting a widow, which form the corresponding parts of the Ukrainian and English language world models. Purpose. The purpose of the research is to give a contrastive analysis of the verbalizations of the concept WIDOW in Ukrainian and English linguocultures.Methods. The paper uses a comprehensive methodology that combines the following methods: contrastive – to identify common and distinctive features of the concept of WIDOW in the languages under comparison; conceptual-semiotic analysis – to reveal the cognitive mechanisms of the embodiment of the concept; contextual-interpretive analysis – to clarify the peculiarities of the representation of the concept in paremiae.Results. In the highlight of contrastive ethnolinguistic studies and theory of conceptual analysis, is there performed and revealed a structure-semantic reconstruction of the concept of WIDOW, as well as the principles of its semantic-conceptual organization in the English and Ukrainian language pictures of the world. The set of the conceptual and semantic marks is determined, due to the concept structure constituents (conceptual proper, imagery-associative and value), the main ideographic conceptual domains are revealed, the analyzed concept being axiologically marked and its associative linkage, due to the scope of its conceptual correlates are determined.Factors that influence on the conceptualization of the objective reality by the given ethnic groups are determined. Certain ethnocultural and ethnolinguistic peculiarities and general characteristics of verbalization of the concept WIDOW peculiar to both languages are found out. Conclusions. The analyses of widow nominations showed the allomorphism of national peculiarities of reality conceptualization, which are influenced by archetype types, historical and cultural actuality. It is shown that WIDOW in Ukrainian culture can be viewed as a taboo concept which content is marked by negative axiological status due to the socio-cultural views formed in the period predetermining the inadmissibility of its direct naming in relevant social situations.Key words: culturally marked words, language world model, taboo concept, ethnic mentality, widow’s image, conceptual mark. Стаття присвячена вивченню етнічних особливостей концептуалізації дійсності, об’єктивованих у культурно маркованих лексичних одиницях на позначення жінки-вдови, що утворюють відповідні фрагменти української та англійської національно-мовних картин світу. Метою роботи є зіставний аналіз засобів вербалізації концепту ВДОВА/WIDOWв англійській та українській лінгвокультурах.Методи. У роботі застосовується комплексна методика, яка поєднує такі методи: зіставний – для виявлення спільних і відмінних рис концепту ВДОВА/WIDOW у зіставлюваних мовах; концептуально-семіотичний аналіз – для розкриття когнітивних механізмів утілення концепту; контекстуально-інтерпретаційний аналіз – для з’ясування особливостей репрезентації концепту у пареміях.Результати. Крізь призму зіставної лінгвокультурології та теорії концептуального аналізу здійснено структурно-семан-тичну реконструкцію концепту ВДОВА/WIDOW та виявлено принципи його семантико-концептуальної організації в англійській та українській мовних картинах світу. Визначено набір концептуальних та семантичних ознак аналізованого концепту з урахуванням складників його структури (понятійної, асоціативно-образної, ціннісної), виявлено основні семантико-ідеографічні сфери концепту ВДОВА; з’ясовано аксіологічну маркованість та визначено асоціативні зв’язки досліджуваного концеп-ту з урахуванням його концептуальних корелятів; проаналізовано взаємозв’язок оцінного, культурного й інших компонентів конотації у семантиці фразеологічних одиниць; розглянуто семіотичні механізми стереотипізації уявлень українського етносу про вдову, виявлено їхню детермінацію культурними та психоментальними чинниками, Висновки. Аналіз особливостей об’єктивації концепту ВДОВА/WIDOW в англійській та українській лінгвокультурах дав змогу зробити висновок про стереотипність сприйняття жінки-вдови відповідними лінгвосоціумами та показав аломорфізм національних особливостей концептуалізації дійсності, на які впливають історичні та культурні реалії. Доведено, що в українській культурі концепт ВДОВА є табуйованим, зміст якого відзначається негативним аксіологічним статусом.Ключові слова: національно маркована лексика, табу, етнічна ментальність, образ вдови, концептуальна ознака.

Current thinking on inflection classes views them as organized networks rather than random assemblages of allomorphs (a view that reaches back to the 1980s, with such notions as Wurzel's paradigm structure conditions and Carstairs's paradigm economy). But we still find systems which appear to lack any visible implicative structure. A particularly striking example comes from Võro (a variety of South Estonian). Its system of verbal inflectional suffixes is formally simple but distributionally complex: although there are never more than three allomorphs in competition, nearly two dozen inflectional patterns emerge through rampant cross-classification of the allomorphs. Allomorph choice in one part of the paradigm thus fails to constrain allomorph choice in the rest, so it looks as if the paradigms would have to be memorized en masse. The key to these patterns lies outside the system of suffixation itself, in the more conventional formal complexity of stem alternations and their paradigmatic patterning. The computationally implemented analysis presented here provides a model of inflection in which the implicational network of phonological, morphophonological and morphological conditions on formal realization are unified in a single representation.

Abstract Tlapanec (Mè’phàà), an Otomanguean language spoken in Mexico, has several allomorphic alternations which are sensitive to the number of syllables of the stem (monosyllabic vs. disyllabic). We argue that these alternations are motivated by the foot structure which consists of two syllables, and that such alternations can be captured by subcategorization frames. An alternative, P » M analysis is also provided, where the allomorphic alternations are motivated by markedness constraints, namely *(tV.ˈσ), which avoids [t] in the weak position of the foot. These two approaches will be compared, and it will be argued that a subcategorization approach is more adequate than a P » M analysis.
