We consider the problem of obtaining parameterized lower bounds for the size of arithmetic circuits computing polynomials with the degree of the polynomial as the parameter. We consider the following special classes of multilinear algebraic branching programs: 1) Read Once Oblivious Branching Programs (ROABPs), 2) Strict interval branching programs, 3) Sum of read once formulas with restricted ordering. We obtain parameterized lower bounds (i.e., nΩ(t(k)) lower bound for some function t of k) on the size of the above models computing a multilinear polynomial that can be computed by a depth four circuit of size g(k)nO(1) for some computable function g. Further, we obtain a parameterized separation between ROABPs and read-2 ABPs. This is obtained by constructing a degree k polynomial that can be computed by a read-2 ABP of small size such that the rank of the partial derivative matrix under any partition of the variables is large.

We present polynomial families complete for the well-studied algebraic complexity classes VF, VBP, VP, and VNP. The polynomial families are based on the homomorphism polynomials studied in the recent works of Durand et al. (2014) and Mahajan et al. (2018). We consider three different variants of graph homomorphisms, namely injective homomorphisms , directed homomorphisms , and injective directed homomorphisms , and obtain polynomial families complete for VF, VBP, VP, and VNP under each one of these. The polynomial families have the following properties: • The polynomial families complete for VF, VBP, and VP are model independent, i.e., they do not use a particular instance of a formula, algebraic branching programs, or circuit for characterising VF, VBP, or VP, respectively. • All the polynomial families are hard under p -projections.

This paper is devoted to the languages accepted by constant-depth, polynomial-size families of circuits in which every circuit element computes the sum of its input bits modulo a fixed period q. It has been conjectured that such a circuit family cannot compute the AND function of n inputs. Here it is shown that such circuit families are equivalent in power to polynomial-length programs over finite solvable groups; in particular, the conjecture implies that Barrington's result on the computational power of branching programs over nonsolvable groups cannot be extended to solvable groups. It is also shown that polynomial-length programs over dihedral groups cannot compute the AND function. Furthermore, it is shown that the conjecture is equivalent to a characterization, in terms of finite semigroups and formal logic, of the regular languages accepted by such circuit families. There is, moreover, considerable independent evidence for this characterization. This last result is established using new theorems, of independent interest, concerning the algebraic structure of finite categories.

Recently, an interest in constructing pseudorandom or hitting set generators for restricted branching programs has increased, which is motivated by the fundamental issue of derandomizing space-bounded computations. Such constructions have been known only in the case of width 2 and in very restricted cases of bounded width. In this paper, we characterize the hitting sets for read-once branching programs of width 3 by a so-called richness condition. Namely, we show that such sets hit the class of read-once conjunctions of DNF and CNF (i.e. the weak richness). Moreover, we prove that any rich set extended with all strings within Hamming distance of 3 is a hitting set for read-once branching programs of width 3. Then, we show that any almost O(log n)-wise independent set satisfies the richness condition. By using such a set due to Alon et al. (1992) our result provides an explicit polynomial-time construction of a hitting set for read-once branching programs of width 3 with acceptance probability ɛ > 5/6. We announced this result at conferences more than ten years ago, including only proof sketches, which motivated a number of subsequent results on pseudorandom generators for restricted read-once branching programs. This paper contains our original detailed proof that has not been published yet.

We study the problem of obtaining efficient, deterministic, black-box polynomial identity testing algorithms (PIT) for algebraic branching programs (ABPs) that are read-once and oblivious. This class has an efficient, deterministic, white-box polynomial identity testing algorithm (due to Raz and Shpilka [RS05]), but prior to this work there was no known such black-box algorithm. The main result of this work gives the first quasi-polynomial sized hitting set for size S circuits from this class, when the order of the variables is known. As our hitting set is of size exp(lg2 S), this is analogous (in the terminology of boolean pseudorandomness) to a seed-length of lg2 S, which is the seed length of the pseudorandom generators of Nisan [Nis92] and Impagliazzo-Nisan-Wigderson [INW94] for read-once oblivious boolean branching programs. Thus our work can be seen as an algebraic analogue of these foundational results in boolean pseudorandomness. We also show that several other circuit classes can be black-box reduced to readonce oblivious ABPs, including non-commutative ABPs and diagonal depth-4 circuits, and consequently obtain similar hitting sets for these classes as well. To establish the above hitting sets, we use a form of dimension reduction we call a rank condenser, which maps a large-dimensional space to a medium-dimensional space, while preserving the rank of low-dimensional subspaces. We give an explicit construction of a rank condenser that is randomness efficient and show how it can be used as a form of oblivious Gaussian elimination. As an application, we strengthen a result of Mulmuley [Mul12a], and show that derandomizing a particular case of the Noether Normalization Lemma is reducible to black-box PIT of read-once oblivious ABPs. Using our hitting set results, this gives a derandomization of Noether Normalization in that case.

Consider the problem of Polynomial Identity Testing(PIT): we are given an arithmetic circuit computing a multivariate polynomial over some eld and we have to determine whether that polynomial is identically zero or not. PIT is a fundamental problem and has applications in both algorithms and complexity theory. In this work, our aim is to study PIT for the model of multilinear depth three circuits for which no deterministic polynomial time identity test is known. An nO(log n) time blackbox PIT for set-multilinear depth three circuits (a special kind of multilinear depth three circuits) is known due to [ASS12], [FS13]. To get a better understanding of the problem at hand, we move towards multilinear depth three circuits by considering in- termediate circuit classes which encompasse more polynomials than set-multilinear depth three circuits and are `natural' subclasses of multilinear depth three circuits. One such model is `superposition of set-multilinear depth 3 circuits'. Our initial observations are: There is an nO(log n) whitebox PIT for superposition of two set-multilinear depth 3 circuits. There is a sub-exponential time whitebox PIT for superposition of constantly many set- multilinear depth 3 circuits. The second observation is subsumed by the recent independent and almost simultaneous work by [OSV15] that gives sub-exponential time hitting set for multilinear depth three circuits. A recent line of research considers hitting set for Read Once Oblivious Algebraic Branching Programs (ROABP's) which subsumes set-multilinear depth three circuits. An nO(log n) black box PIT is given for ROABP's of width polynomial in the number of variables in [AGKS14]. It is natural to ask whether this result on ROABP PIT can be used to give e cient (meaning polynomial or quasi-polynomial time) PIT for multilinear depth three circuits. For instance, the result by [OSV15] elegantly uses ROABP PIT as a `base case' (in a certain sense) to give a sub-exponential time PIT algorithm for multilinear depth three circuits. At this point, we wondered if multilinear depth three circuits of size s could also be computed by an ROABP of size polynomial in s. If true then this would immediately imply a quasi-polynomial time hitting set for multilinear depth three circuits, which is a long standing open problem in algebraic complexity theory. For instance, it can be shown that any multlinear depth three circuit with top fan-in two and just two variables per linear polynomial can be computed by an ROABP with constant width. But we show in our main result that this is not true for general multilinear depth three circuits that are superpositions of only two set-multilinear depth three circuits. There is a polynomial computed by a superposition of two set-multilinear depth 3 circuits with top fan-in just three and size polynomial in the number of variables n, such that any ROABP computing the polynomial has width 2 (n). There is a polynomial computed by a superposition of three set-multilinear depth 3 circuits with top fan-in just two and size polynomial in the number of variables n, such that any ROABP computing the polynomial has width 2 (n). This means the approach of directly converting a multilinear depth 3 circuit (even a superposi- tion of set-multilinear depth 3 circuits) to an ROABP and then applying the existing PIT for ROABP will not work. However the underlying techniques in [ASS12], [AGKS14] and [OSV15] might still be useful. The proofs of the above lower bounds are based on explicit construction of expander graphs that can be used to design multilinear depth three circuits (in particular su- perposition of set-multilinear depth 3 circuits) with high `evaluation dimension' - a complexity measure that is well suited to capture a `weakness' of ROABPs.

The iterated matrix multiplication polynomial (IMM) of width w and length d is the 1x1 entry in the product of d square matrices of size w. The w^2d entries in the d matrices are distinct variables. In this thesis, we study certain learning and lower bound problems related to IMM. Our first work gives a polynomial time randomized algorithm for equivalence testing of IMM. At its core, the equivalence testing algorithm exploits a connection between the irreducible invariant subspaces of the Lie algebra of the group of symmetries of a polynomial f that is equivalent to IMM and the layer spaces of a full-rank algebraic branching program computing f. This connection also helps determine the group of symmetries of IMM and show that IMM is characterized by its group of symmetries. Our second work is related to learning affine projections of IMM, which is believed to be a very hard problem as it is equivalent to reconstructing a powerful model to compute polynomials called algebraic branching programs (ABP). Equivalence test for IMM can be viewed as reconstructing ABPs in the average-case, when the width of the ABP is at most (n/d)^0.5, where n and d are the number of variables and the degree of the polynomial computed by the ABP respectively. Our second work improves this by first considering a related problem called `linear matrix factorization’ (LMF) which is a natural generalization of the polynomial factorization problem. We give a polynomial time randomized algorithm for average-case LMF for matrix products of width at most 0.5(n^0.5). In fact, we give a polynomial time randomized algorithm that solves (worst-case) LMF problem when the input matrix product is non-degenerate or pure product-- a notion we define in this work. Using our algorithm for LMF, we give a non-trivial average-case reconstruction algorithm for ABPs of width at most 0.5(n^0.5), which is interesting in the context of the Ω(n^0.5) width lower bound known for homogeneous ABPs. Our last work gives lower bounds on interesting restrictions of arithmetic formulas computing IMM. We prove a w^Ω(d) lower bound on the size of multilinear depth three formulas computing IMM of width w and length d. The lower bound is proved by introducing a novel variant of the partial derivatives measure called skewed partial derivatives, which found applications in other subsequent works. Improving this result to w^Ω(log d) size lower bound on multilinear formulas computing IMM would imply a super-polynomial separation between ABPs and arithmetic formulas. We also show an exponential separation between multilinear depth three and multilinear depth four formulas which was an improvement over the quasi-polynomial separation already known. We also consider a restriction of multilinear formulas, called interval set-multilinear formulas computing IMM. Proving a super-polynomial size lower bound on interval set-multilinear formulas computing IMM would imply a super-polynomial separation between algebraic branching programs and homogeneous formulas in the non-commutative world. We make progress in this direction by giving a super-polynomial size lower bound on an interesting restriction of the interval set-multilinear formula computing IMM.
