Air pollution caused by ambient fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) is a significant global environmental problem. Pollutants that adhere to PM 2.5 may be transported into human respiratory system and perturb the redox equilibrium through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), thus leading to myriad health effects. This mechanism has been proposed to be related with the high redox-active components in PM 2.5, such as transition metals, quinones, and humic-like substances (HULIS). This thesis aims to improve the scientific understanding on the sources and health impacts of PM 2.5 especially its HULIS fraction. Thus, both chemical characterization and redox activity measurement of ambient PM 2.5 samples were conducted. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was then performed to apportion the source-specific contributions to PM 2.5 and its oxidative potential. The HULIS fraction of PM 2.5 was also quantified and source apportioned regarding their mass concentration and oxidative potential. The main findings are summarized below: (1) In Chapter 2, 66 PM 2.5 samples collected in Hong Kong during 2016-2017 were analyzed, including carbonaceous components, major ions, metals, and some source markers. The oxidative potential of PM 2.5 were measured using dithiothreitol (DTT) assay. Results showed clear temporal trends for both PM 2.5 mass concentration and its major fraction, with higher levels observed on days under regional pollution than on days under long range transport (LRT) pollution and local emissions. The DTT consumption of PM 2.5 on the contrary, only showed slightly higher activity on regional and LRT days than on local days, possibly due to the comprehensive effects of different sources and species concentrations under different sampling days. We then conducted source apportionment using PMF model. Five primary sources (i.e. marine vessels, Cu-related source, Fe-Mn-Zn-related source, vehicle emissions, biomass burning) and one secondary source were resolved for both PM 2.5 mass concentration and DTT activity. Secondary formation was found to be the most significant source responsible for PM 2.5 mass concentration (30.3%), followed by Cu- related source (24.8%), marine vessels (17.9%) and vehicle emissions (14.5%). Biomass burning (6.8%) and Fe-Mn-Zn-related source (5.8%) were two minor sources contributing to PM 2.5 mass concentration. For oxidative potential of PM 2.5, Cu- related source was the predominant contributor (39.1%). Secondary formation (23.7%) and marine vessels (20.1%) were also two significant sources responsible for the DTT consumption of PM 2.5 . For intrinsic oxidative potential, PM 2.5 emitted from marine vessels and Cu-related source showed highest value, indicating more toxic feature of PM 2.5 derived from those sources regarding DTT activity. (2) In Chapter 3 and 4, the mass concentration, optical properties, and ROS- generation potential of HULIS were investigated in PM 2.5 samples collected in Hong Kong during 2011-2012. They all showed higher levels on regional days than on LRT days and local days. PMF analysis was conducted regarding the mass concentration and ROS activity of HUILS. Six sources were determined, including four primary sources (i.e. marine vessels, vehicle emissions, industrial exhaust, and biomass burning) and two secondary sources (i.e. secondary organic aerosol formation and secondary sulfate). Most sources showed higher contributions to both mass concentrations and DTT activity of HULIS on regional days than on LRT and local days, except that marine vessels had a higher contribution on local days than the other two synoptic conditions. Secondary processes were the major contributor to HULIS (54.9%) throughout the year, followed by biomass burning (27.4%) and industrial exhaust (14.7%). As or the DTT activity of HULIS, biomass burning (62.9%) and secondary processes (25.4%) were found to be the top two contributors. Intrinsic ROS-generation potential of HULIS was also investigated by normalizing the DTT activity by HULIS mass in each source. HULIS from biomass burning were the most DTT-active, followed by marine vessels; while HULIS formed through secondary processes were the least DTT-active. For the optical properties of HULIS, multiple linear regression model was adopted to evaluate the contributions of various sources to the light absorbing ability of HULIS. Biomass burning was found to be the only source significantly associated with the light absorbing property of HULIS. In Chapter 5 and 6, the predominant species of water-soluble fraction of PM 2.5, HULIS, were measured in samples collected in Beijing from 2011 to 2012. Various HULIS species, and the redox activity of HULIS were quantified together with certain source markers of PM 2.5. HULIS and their redox activity showed similar temporal trend, with higher levels measured during the heating season (November to March) than during the non-heating season (April to October). Source apportionment of both HULIS and their redox activity was performed using PMF. Four combustion-related primary sources, namely coal combustion, biomass burning, waste incineration, and vehicle exhaust, and one secondary factor were resolved. In particular, waste incineration was identified as a source of HULIS for the first time. Biomass burning and secondary aerosol formation were the major contributors (>59%) to both HULIS and associated DTT activity throughout the year. During the non-heating season, secondary aerosol formation was the most important source, whereas during the heating season, the predominant contributor was biomass burning. The four combustion-related sources accounted for about 70% of HULIS and their ROS activity, implying that future reduction in PM 2.5 emissions from combustion activities can substantially reduce the HULIS burden and their potential health impact in Beijing.

The bulk of the work is a literature review of common pollutants, pollutant sources, HVAC equipment and systems, and remediation techniques. Through air drying (TAD) enables production of premium tissue products with increased softness, absorbency and bulk. On the other hand, the energy consumption of the TAD process is considerably higher than for conventional tissue drying alternatives. Previous studies on the TAD process have indicated that the drying rate for low grammage sheets is independent of the flow of air through the sheets.   The objective of this work has been to investigate and quantify how drying times and drying rates for low grammage sheets are affected by the addition of external web heating in a TAD process. Moist Eucalyptus and softwood sheets with grammages ranging from 15 to 60 g/m2 were dried in a laboratory process by an air flow through them and an IR-dryer with a variable power output. During drying, pressure drop and air flow were measured and an IR-camera recorded surface temperatures which enabled calculation of drying times and drying rates.   Using the IR-dryer to dry sheets shortened the drying time with at least 20 % and up to 60 % compared to sheets dried without IR-heating. Both pulp types and all grammages showed a linear relationship between drying times and the amount of evaporated water. Mass specific drying rates however, were very high for low grammage sheets and decreased rapidly with increasing grammage. Especially for low grammage sheets the drying rate had a very strong dependency on the IR-power and increased significantly with every increasing IR-power level. This finding implies that heat transfer could be a limiting factor when drying low grammage sheets in the TAD process. Another interesting phenomenon was observed for all grammages of the Eucalyptus sheets. Through these sheets the air flow rate increased with increasing IR-power, something that was not seen at all for the softwood sheets.   To summarize, adding external web heating to a TAD process resulted in a positive effect on drying times and drying rates, especially for low grammage sheets typical for the TAD process.

Försvarsmakten genomgår, sedan snart tio år tillbaka, en transformering mot ett insatsförsvar med ökad försvarsförmåga. Behovet av luftburen taktisk transport har i denna transformering blivit alltmer betydelsefullt, främst vid internationella insatser. Författaren ställer sig dock frågan hur den taktiska luftburna transporten är tänkt att användas vid nationella insatser. Syftet med uppsatsen är således att utifrån Försvarsmaktens doktriner, Militärstrategisk doktrin och Doktrin för luftoperationer, undersöka om den resurs som det taktiska transportflyget utgör i det framtida användbara försvaret vid nationella insatser är att anse som kritisk. För att svara på syftet analyseras hur det användbara försvaret är tänkt att nyttjas vid nationella insatser, vilka målsättningar som finns för det taktiska transportflyget samt hur denna förmåga ser ut i dagsläget. Författaren använder sig sedan av de teorier som hämtats från doktrinerna för att analysera hur taktisk luftburen transport kan kopplas samman med den nya insatsorganisationen. Det genomförs även en jämförelse mellan de målsättningar som finns för den taktiska luftburna transporten med situationen i dagsläget i syfte att analysera hur framtiden kommer att se ut. Slutsatsen är att det taktiska transportflyget är av vikt men att det ej utgör en kritisk resurs i det användbara försvaret vid nationella insatser. Författaren gör även bedömningen att tillgängligheten på de flygplan som används för luftburen taktisk transport kommer att vara betydligt lägre än vad som planerats.
The Swedish Armed Forces is, since approximately ten years back, experiencing a transformation towards an improved defence capability. The importance of tactical air transport has within this transformation become of greater importance, especially concerning international operations. The author is, however, curios about how tactical air transport is to be implemented within domestic operations. Hence the purpose of the essay is to analyze, with the help of the two doctrines: Militärstrategisk doktrin and Doktrin för luftoperationer, if the resource that the tactical air transport constitutes to the new Swedish Armed Forces is to be seen as a crucial one within domestic operations? To answer the purpose the author analyzes how the new Swedish Armed Forces is intended to operate when it comes to domestic operations, what goals are set up for the tactical air transport and what the situation is like at the moment. The author then uses the theories described in the military doctrines to analyze how tactical air transport can be linked to the new Swedish Armed Forces .There is also a comparison made between the current state of the tactical air transport and the goals set up within the new organisation with the purpose of analyzing what the future might look like. The conclusion is reached that tactical air transport is of great importance to the new Swedish Armed Forces but that it is not to be seen as a crucial resource. The author also predicts that the availability of the aircraft fleet used for tactical air transport will be lower then planned.

År 2002 fattade den svenska riksdagen beslutet att sluta bygga skyddsrum. Sverige har per capita näst flest antal skyddsrum i världen. Ett stort antal skyddsrum i Sverige, kombinerat med beslutet att inte bygga dem längre, har lämnat Sverige vid en vägkorsning. Hur mycket bör Sverige bry sig om sina skyddsrum? För utländska fiender kan skyddsrum verka som ännu ett hinder för att invadera, på grund av de svenska civila möjligheterna till att vara säkra från bomber och ett krigs påverkan. Även om krigföring har förändrats under åren och nya strategier har utvecklats, kommer en säker plats för civila att stärka den försvarande sidan. För att detta försvar ska fungera måste skyddsrummen vara konstruerade på tillgängliga platser för civilbefolkningen, erhålla det material som skyddsrummen är i behov av, kunna drivas av en civil samt vara i gott skick. Det var under kalla kriget som Sverige byggde de flesta av sina skyddsrum. Med många decennier och olika lagar för konstruktion som passerat, har många av skyddsrummen problem i nuläget. Problem såsom att material saknas, luftfilter har blivit för gamla, rummen har renoverats till något annat, eller helt enkelt att skyddet inte kan garantera den funktion som den en gång gjorde. I Sverige är Myndigheten för samhällsskydd och beredskap (MSB) den myndighet som ansvarar för skyddsrummens tillstånd. MSB har det yttersta ansvaret att se till att skyddsrummen är säkra i nödsituationer. För att uppfylla detta utgör de tillsyn och kontroller på skyddsrummen. I denna kandidatuppsats undersöks de svenska skyddsrummens tillstånd och de problem som följer med dem. Vi fann det även av intresse att undersöka skyddsrummens relevans i Sveriges samhälle ur ett historiskt- och ett nutidsperspektiv. Metoden som har använts är av kvalitativ och rättsdogmatisk karaktär. De slutsatser som kunnat dras i denna kandidatuppsats är att Sveriges skyddsrum befinner sig i olika tillstånd vad gäller skick och kvalité. Det kan också konstateras att det inte pågår tillräckligt många skyddsrumskontroller som både är önskat och nödvändigt gentemot det stora antal skyddsrum som finns. Slutligen nyttjas Sveriges skyddsrum för andra ändamål än vad de preliminärt byggdes för, vilket innebär att de fyller ett syfte i Sveriges samhälle.
In 2002, the Swedish government decided to stop building air raid shelters. Sweden has per capita the second most air raid shelters in the world. A large number of air raid shelters in Sweden, combined with the decision to stop constructing them, has left Sweden at a crossroad. How much should Sweden care about the air raid shelters? To foreign enemies, the air raid shelters may seem as yet another obstacle to invading, because of the opportunity given to the Swedish civilians to be safe from bombs and the effects of war. Even though the warfare has changed during the years and new strategies have been developed, a safe place for civilians will strengthen the defending side. For this defense to work, the air raid shelters have to be constructed at available locations for civilians, be equipped with the material needed, be operated by a civilian and the shelters have to be in good condition. It was during the Cold War era that Sweden built most of its air raid shelters. With a lot of decades and different rules of construction passing, many of these air raid shelters have problems now. The problems concern materials missing, air filters which have passed their best before date, the shelters being renovated to something completely different, or simply that the shelter cannot guarantee the function that it once did. In Sweden, The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) is the agency responsible for the condition of the air raid shelters. The agency has the utmost responsibility that the air raid shelters will be safe in case of emergency. To fulfill that, the agency executes supervision and regulatory control of the shelters. In this essay, the condition of the Swedish air raid shelters and the problems that come along with them get examined. We also found it interesting to examine the air raid shelters' relevance to Swedish society from a historic and present-day point of view. A qualitative and legal dogmatic method has been used. The conclusions that could be drawn from this essay is that Sweden’s air raid shelters are in different conditions regarding standard and quality. It can also be established that there aren’t enough regulatory controls being executed. Finally, the Swedish air raid shelters do serve a purpose for the Swedish society even though they have been built for other reasons.

Recent technological advances have extended the use of some old technology such as the X-10 home automation. With the use of X-10 and the Internet, a remote control home is possible. One of the major energy consumption appliances in a house is the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system. The main objective of this study is to explore the possibility of using X-10 and the Internet to serve as an energy saving system. A simulation is used to estimate the energy consumption.

The purpose of this essay is to review the Swedish international development cooperation carried out by Sida to control whether the implementation of the international aid is compatible with the policy. There are a lot of different ways to implement the economic aid that are being used by the donors today. The Swedish method has since the 1960s mainly been focused on attempting to diminish the poverty in the world. In the latest time another goal has been added, that is a focus on supporting the civil rights. This essay will be concentrated to aim on what kind of countries receiving aid from Sweden, and exactly why these countries are being chosen.

The main question of this essay is: What countries are receiving the international developing aid, and how can this distribution be understood? To answer the main question there are two themes in the essay:

• What kind of countries is supposed to receive developing aid from Sweden according to the policy?

• What kind of countries is receiving the aid, and how can this be understood?

This essay is mainly based on quantitative data obtained from Sida, together with index of corruption and poverty will the different types of Swedish cooperation countries be described.

The conclusions of this essay are that there are two objectives of the policy: to fight poverty, and to strengthen the civil rights. What is noticeable in this essay is that it seems like there are more recipient of the aid from Sida that are relatively wealthy than there are poor. Still, it is obvious that the poor countries recieve a bigger amount of aid than the wealthy countries do. It is in other words difficult to declare which objective that is the superior one
