Повний текст джерелаAs a privileged space for the manifestation of social inequalities, the city is often divided into neighborhoods that vary significantly in terms of the socio-economic resources of their inhabitants. This division of urban space based on these resources is sometimes described as a form of social segregation within the city. This socio-spatial segregation is frequently described in social science literature through the measurement of differences between neighborhoods. Without denying this urban reality, this thesis focuses on i sub-municipal divisions (here understood as IRIS units) where significant income disparities among residents are observed. This phenomenon, described here as the internal socio-economic polarization of these IRIS units, is measured using two indexes (indexes of wealth and poverty) constructed from available income deciles per consumption unit. Initially, we identify the IRIS units most affected by this internal socio-economic polarization in 14 French provincial metropolitan areas. A principal component analysis at the IRIS level allows for dentifying the housing and population characteristics associated with the internal socio-economic polarization of the IRIS units. Subsequently, this research concentrates on the three metropolitan areas of the French Mediterranean coast — Montpellier, Marseille, and Nice — whose diversity allows for a better examination of the local specificities of internal socio-economic polarization. We also attempt to understand the recent trends in these "polarized" neighborhoods in terms of income distribution and formulate hypotheses regarding the origins of the strong internal socio-economic polarization in these neighborhoods (early stages of gentrification, ongoing or incomplete gentrification; pauperization; sustainable cohabitation)

Повний текст джерелаSince the 10th century, the Central-Northern region of Michoacán State, in Mexico, has demonstrated deep settlement pattern and sociopolitical transformations. During the 14th century, as the result of complex sociopolitical processes, a kingdom finally raised: the Tarascan kingdom, one of the most powerful and original state entity at the time of the Spanish Conquest in the 16th century. Our study focuses on the Tarascan state emergence antecedents. We are looking, in particular, for a better understanding of one of the most symptomatic and major shift that has taken place in the region, during the 13th century. Around A.D. 1250, four extensive and densely occupied agglomerations, clearly related to the Tarascan material culture, are implanted on an unwelcoming area, the Malpais de Zacapu. Such population nucleation is an unprecedented phenomenon in the region, and has rare equivalents in other Mesoamerican contexts. The urban layout of these settlements, their spatial and social organization, as their short period of occupation (two centuries approximately), stress numerous questions related to urban functions, society and political system at the sites, at different observation scales (from local to macro-regional). The present research combines a systematic approach and survey of field remains, and apply various spatial and geostatistical analyses. It describes precisely these spatial units, but it also reveals the spatial and social structures at these urban settlements. We finally show, among others observations, that the agglomerations settled on the Malpais de Zacapu had already reached urban qualities and fonctions and were inhabited by complex societies

Повний текст джерелаHuman activities in large agglomerations ("megacities") cause large pollutant emissions, with negative effects on air quality and human health at a local and regional level. Fine particulate matter (PM) is one of the greatest concerns for health. Organic aerosol makes up a large part of fine PM, but there are still large gaps in the knowledge on its formation pathways and there is considerable uncertainty in its 3D modeling. In this thesis, PM₂. ₅ simulations with the regional chemistry-transport model CHIMERE were first evaluated with measurement date collected in Paris in springtime, 2007. The model results show good performance of simulating occurrence of peaks, especially for inorganic aerosols which mainly originate from long range transport from Northeastern and Central Europe. Modeled primary organic aerosol (POA) is overestimated when considered as non-volatile by a factor of two, while secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is underestimated by a factor of more than two. In order to improve the model performance of organic aerosol simulation, the volatility basis set approach which formalizes new knowledge on POA volatility and on SOA chemical aging is implemented into CHIMERE. Model simulations are evaluated with ground based and airborne observations obtained during two intensive field campaigns performed in the Paris agglomeration in summer 2009 and winter 2009/2010 in the frame of the European MEGAPOLI project. The simulation for organic aerosol is improved when taking into account POA volatility and multistep oxidation of semivolatile VOC during the summer campaign. Advection of continental air masses to the Paris agglomeration with enhanced SOA levels either from anthropogenic or biogenic origin, is well restituted by the model. SOA build-up in the plume is overestimated by a factor of two when normalized to photochemical ozone production, but this factor is within the uncertainty of the VBS approach. During the winter campaign, SOA formation is still underestimated. These results clearly represent progress in the modeling of organic aerosol in and around a large urban agglomeration. The model was used to estimate sources contributing for summer 2009 to organic aerosol in the agglomeration and in the plume. Within the agglomeration, advection of biogenic, anthropogenic and background SOA from outside was dominant, while locally emitted POA accounts to about a quarter of total OA. In the plume, anthropogenic SOA formation, and to some extent also SOA formation from aged POA becomes dominant. These results are in broad agreement with source apportionment studies from observations

Повний текст джерелаThis research focuses on the main Nile Delta cities of Tantâ, Mahalla and Mansûra, with 500 000 inhabitants each. Its aim is both to widen the field of urban research in Egypt, centered on the capital Cairo and to challenge the traditional rural approach to a regional space. Secondary cities, which are involved at the local and national levels, play a major role in urban transition, which is well on the way in Egypt. The three guidelines of this study are : - To analyze urban growth processes which drastically change the traditional definition of the city and call for new notions such as agglomeration and metropolitan area. In Delta cities, surrounded with rich farmland, space constraint is high and processes of urban sprawl are combined with the densification of townscapes. However hard the State tries to limit this overflowing growth, it gradually tends to support new forms of urbanization. - To assert the urbanness of these cities, wedged between densely populated rural areas (3885 inhabitants/ml2) and a strong capital. Their remarkable town identifies are also epitomized through three characteristic features : the Al-Badawî pilgrimage in Tantâ, textile industry in Mahalla and the Nile in Mansûra. - To assume the emergence of Mesopolis, a conurbation around the three cities within a 15-mile range, as an intermediary between the two external axes framing the Delta namely Cairo-Alexandria and the Suez Canal cities. This Mesopolis renews the image of an area dominated by the metropolis

Повний текст джерелаThis work is a contribution to the analysis of processes that foster socio-spatial disparities within urban agg and of the social implications of these disparities. It purchases the double goal of evaluating the contributions of spatial and non-spatial factors to the dynamic of socio-spatial disparities and of testing the hypothesis of negative extemal effects due to the spatial concentration of poor populations. Conceming the first objective, a number of studies has been developed in order to evaluate the role of three factors in te widening of the social gap between communes of the Ile-de-France region during te 1980s : residential mobility, family structure of households and economic inequalities. Concerning the second objective, a statistical analyse was conceived in order to determine whether ceteris paribus, youth encountered a higher risk of dropping out of school without any certificate when living in the poor areas of the Parisian agglomeration
