The study of the earthen and wooden buildings of the Late Iron Age agglomerations (3rd-1st century BC) of inner Gaul (except the Mediterranean coast) allows to develop a reflection around two research topics both little invested and complementary. Many debates concerning the characterisation of these grouped settlements and their possible urban status have thus led me to develop an interdisciplinary approach in this PhD. The aim was therefore to contribute to a better understanding of the urbanisation process and of the agglomerations (oppida and open agglomerations) features through a detailed study of architecture, allowing to define how architectural forms reveal and convey particular socio-economic dynamics. The technical study of 339 buildings, from 39 agglomerations, was based on a strict and original methodology: this combines the analysis of various types of architectural remains and taphonomic dynamics integrating both archaeological and ethnographic documentation. While a large part of these constructions is made up of earthfast posts, a significant place was given to timber-framed architecture and the use of diagonal braces. These architectural traditions were then integrated into a more global research, considering at the same time the spatial organisation of agglomerations, the use of buildings and the social status of their inhabitants, as well as the differences between rural architecture and that of grouped settlements. An interpretative model, taking into account the environmental context and all the complexity of Late Iron Age agglomerations, has thus been proposed. At least part of these grouped settlements would be characterised by the development of economies and rational management of timber and construction, craftsmen networks as well as by adaptations of architectural models to urban planning and urbanisation degree

Based on the principle that cities are well aware of their own position, this thesis shows how two world cities, Paris and New York, built their physical public space by interacting one with the other. This takes place in the late 19th century and the early 20th century. The particular dynamics of this relationship is due to the fact that, first Paris, then New York, is the foremost model of urban modernity. By studying, on both sides, the reciprocal knowledge, the expressions of urban desires, rejections and ambitions as well as urban visions in regards to the other city, this thesis reconstructs a complicated and passionate history. To do this, it analyses texts and images from the professional sphere of architects and engineers as well as from the public sphere and the art world. The history between Paris and New York, thanks to the reversal of one model toward the other, gives a new insight in the more generally cultural aspects that both world cities associate with the modernity of either one. It is a history where the desires and obstacles lead to a far more complexe relationship to modernity itself. Only superficially symmetrical, this relationship is, in fact, profoundly asymmetrical
Courmont, Antoine. "Politiques des données urbaines : ce que l'open data fait au gouvernement urbain." Thesis, Paris, Institut d'études politiques, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016IEPP0042/document.
Analyzing open data policies, this thesis investigates the effect of the circulation of data on urban government. This political sociology of data, which analyses jointly the transformation of data and actors associated to them, highlights the pluralism of the politics of urban data. Based on an ethnographic investigation inside the Metropolis of Lyon, the thesis studies the open data policy in the making. In addition, 70 interviews, archive material and a partial comparison with North-American cities were used for the analyze. Following the chain of open data, the thesis emphasizes a tension between attachment and detachment. Attached to vast socio-technical networks, data must be detached from their initial environment to circulate, before being re-attached to new users. In order to do this, data undergo a series of trials. The uncertain outcome of these trials produce new agencements which question sectorial, institutional and territorial borders. That’s why, to maintain control on its public policies, the challenge for a local government is to manage to regulate the flows of data on its territory. Data thus become an issue that must be governed
