Studying luminescent properties of nanoparticles leads to informations about elementary mechanisms connected to the luminescence. As it has been done for semiconductors (quantum confinement effect for instance), we want to evaluate the influence of parameters like size or composition of insulating nanoparticles on their luminescence. In this purpose, we had to develop a versatile tool, able to efficiently excite these particles, then perform their image and their spectroscopy. The achromatic confocal microscope built during my phD work and hosted in the Nanoptec center is able to fill these aims : tunable wavelenght from deep UV (210 nm) to IR (about 1 μm), spatial resolution of about 1 μm (enables us to work on sufficiently separated particules), confocal aspect leading to a spatial isolation of the studied object luminescence, detection system able to spectrally select this luminescence... We made various collaborations with teams in and out of the laboratory, such as spatial cartography of dopant distribution in laser fibers, evaluation of optical inhomogeneities amidst ceramics, spatial dispersion measurements of nanoparticles in plastics... The achromatic confocal microscope is also helpful for a better understanding of excitation power effects of luminescent properties of various sizes and compositions nanoparticles

Direct detection of exoplanets is mandatory in order to characterize them. However, this is a hard task because of the small angular separation and high contrast between the host star and the planet. Nulling interferometry is one possible way, but it requires an achromatic phase shifter. In this thesis, a new phase shifter is studied, «the chessboards ». It is two mirrors or glass plate made of several cells, which position and phase shift are constrained by a mathematical scheme. The main effect is that for a given attenuation, the spectral bandwidth spreads as the number of cells in the chessboards increases, which gives the chessboards a quasi achromatic behavior. An automated test bench has been built in order to measure the attenuation produced by the chessboards in the visible. The first results have been obtained with chessboards made by photolithography on a glass plate, and an attenuation of 500 has been measured with a white laser beam. The cells' phase shift errors are the major source of loss of performance. Those generated by the fabrication process being irreversible, one chose to work with a segmented mirror that allows us to control the phase shift of each cells. In order synthesize the chessboards, the control of each cells' phase shift is mandatory and achieved by schlieren imaging. Thus, one can measure the chessboards behavior with respect to the wavelength, and experimentally validate the quasi-achromatic behavior of the chessboards

Miniaturization has become the key word in microelectronics. Indeed, manufacturers aim at shrinking device critical dimensions in order to improve their performances and to decrease their costs. In that respect, lithography plays a predominant role since it is the step that defines the circuit. The lithography technique used for mass production today and that addressed the 65 nm technology node is optical lithography at a wavelength of 193 nm. But it is difficult to improve resolution without greatly increasing complexity, tool price and difficulty in controlling the process. A solution is immersion lithography which principle is to introduce a fluid of higher refractive index than air between the last lens element and the wafer : it, firstly, releases the process constraints by a depthof-focus improvement and, secondly, improves the resolution in keeping 193 nm infrastructures. The purpose of this PhD is to create and validate a 193 nm immersion interferometric setup to study, in advance of tool availability, some aspects of this new optical lithography technique. In this thesis, we describe the design of an achromatic interferometric setup working in immersion at 193 nm. Such a setup has the great advantage of enabling the use of a laboratory excimer laser and does not suffer from its poor coherence parameters. We focused on the characterization of the optical setup and have determined parameters for depth-of-focus and transmission. Finally, we studied imaging at high numerical apertures. We showed the benefit of immersion on resolution and the correlation between roughness increase and contrast loss due to polarisation

This thesis is incorporated in a project which involves developing electro-adjustable reflection macro-pixels for armored vehicle's adaptative camouflage. The purpose of the research project was creating thin layers of magenta, cyan and yellow electrochromic polymers switchable to an achromatic state, in order to incorporate them in organic or hybrid complete devices. Moreover, these materials had to be electrochemically and optially stable, and had to present a short response time. In order to meet the materials color coordinates of the technical specification, the handgap of the organic semi-conductors has been realized by a particular design of the monomers, either by adding electron-rich or electron-poor groups, or by copolymerization between several co-monomers. According to sought properties and the possibilities offered by the monomers, the pi-conjugated polymers had been synthetized by chemical way (by oxydation or Suzuki or Stille reaction) then deposited by spray-casting, or electrodeposited at the surface of a transparent conductor substrate. The electrochromic thin layers had been electrochemically and spectroelectrochemically studied so as to test their cyclic stability and to determine their color coordinates, their opticl contrast and their response time. The use of ionic liquid EMITFSI for synthesis and electrochemical characterization had been explored, and pointed out a significant improvement of the cyclability of the created magenta, cyan and yellow polymers. The preparation of complete electrochromic devices (with organic or inorganic counterelectrode) has been started and has permitted to realize macro-pixels (2x2cm 2) and then demonstrative plates constituted of 16 macro-pixels (4x4cm 2 for each macropixel, with, in particular, yellow pixels including optimized poly(diphenyldithieno[3,2-b;2'3']thiophene)) with electro-control of the color commutation, constituting the fundamental component of an active surface tor the military vehicle's camouflage

Most of the exoplanets were so far detected through indirect methods. The context of my thesis is the analysis of the light we receive from them. Projects ESO-Sphere and GPI have chosen to work with apodized coronographs and sectorial phase masks. To maximize the flux, they should perform in broadbands. My main work was to conceive and test in the laboratory achromatic versions of these coronographs based on the use of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Apodized pupils : arbitrary apodizations can be obtained by placing in two pupil planes reformed in the arms of the interferometeur tqwo glass plates that introduce complementary phase whose chromatism can compensate for the di_raction chromatism. We have demonstrated the feasibility pf this concept using spherical lenses and have tried to determine the characteristics of the glass plates to u used to obtain prolate apodization. I completed my work on apodized pupils by working on the GPI project’s coronographic testbed. Sectorial masks : binary masks (1 or 0 in transmission) that are placed in two images planes reformed in the arms of the interferometer create an achromatic sectorial phase mask. We have tested in monochromatic light and in two wavelength bands of 40 nm wide two masks of four quadrants and eight octants and have studied and compared their properties in the case of a resolved star or when considering a central obstruction. A comparison of the two techniques (apodizations and sectorial masks) was drawn in a conclusion. These works resulted in three papers

Direct imaging of exoplanets remains challenging due to the high contrast and the small angular separation between the star and the planet. It requires suppressing the blinding glare from the star and ensuring that the planet's faint light is not buried deep in various noises. Successful detection depends on the technological readiness and maturity of techniques and algorithms employed while considering the significant trade-offs on raw contrast, inner working angle, and throughput. One of its key components is the use of coronagraphs – instruments with the sole purpose of blocking/reducing the light from the star. This work presents a new type of Lyot coronagraph, invented by Dr. Yves Rabbia, that relies on the frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) principle to suppress the starlight. This coronagraph is aptly called the Evanescent Wave Coronagraph (EvWaCo) owing to its nature that its focal plane mask, comprising a lens and a prism, reflects the off-axis source (planet) and transmits the on-axis source (star) by capturing the evanescent waves. This thesis aims to provide the reader with the groundwork that highlights EvWaCo's three main advantages: i) the mask is inherently achromatic, ii) the size of the mask is adjustable by changing the pressure between the lens and the prism, and iii) both the stellar light and the planet light can be collected simultaneously for low-order wavefront sensing, and proper stellar light centering. The performance of EvWaCo is assessed through experiments in a laboratory and then compared to numerical simulations. The experimental results show a raw contrast equal to a few 10-4 at 3 / over the full I-band (c = 800 nm, ∆/ ≈ 20%) and at 4 / over the full R-band (c = 650 nm, ∆/ ≈ 23%). The simulations confirm the achromatic rejection capability of EvWaCo as it showed a raw contrast of 10-4 at the same radial distance over both bandpasses. This thesis concludes with the status of its testbed and future perspectives

This thesis presents a study of ultrashort electron pulses by using the new ultrafast transmission electron microscope (UTEM) in Strasbourg. The first part focuses on the stroboscopic operation mode which works with trains of picosecond multi-electron pulses in order to study ultrafast, reversible processes. A detailed parametric study was carried out, revealing fundamental principles of electron pulse dynamics. New mechanisms were unveiled which define the pulse characteristics. These are trajectory effects, limiting the temporal resolution, and chromatic filtering, which acts on the energy distribution and signal intensity. Guidelines can be given for optimum operation conditions adapted to different experimental requirements. The second part starts with the setup of the single-shot operation mode, based on intense nanosecond electron pulses for the investigation of irreversible processes. Having the first ns-UTEM equipped with an electron energy loss spectrometer, the influence of chromatic aberration was studied and found to be a major limitation in imaging. It has to be traded off with spherical aberration and signal intensity. For the first time, the feasibility of core-loss EELS with one unique ns-electron pulse is demonstrated. This opens a new field of time-resolved experiments

This dissertation focuses on internal camera calibration and, especially, on its high-precision aspects. Two main threads are followed and examined: lens chromatic aberration correction and estimation of camera intrinsic parameters. For the chromatic aberration problem, we follow a path of digital post-processing of the image in order to get rid from the color artefacts caused by dispersion phenomena of the camera lens system, leading to a noticeable color channels misalignment. In this context, the main idea is to search for a more general correction model to realign color channels than what is commonly used - different variations of radial polynomial. The latter may not be general enough to ensure stable correction for all types of cameras. Combined with an accurate detection of pattern keypoints, the most precise chromatic aberration correction is achieved by using a polynomial model, which is able to capture physical nature of color channels misalignment. Our keypoint detection yields an accuracy up to 0.05 pixels, and our experiments show its high resistance to noise and blur. Our aberration correction method, as opposed to existing software, demonstrates a final geometrical residual of less than 0.1 pixels, which is at the limit of perception by human vision. When referring to camera intrinsics calculation, the question is how to avoid residual error compensation which is inherent for global calibration methods, the main principle of which is to estimate all camera parameters simultaneously - the bundle adjustment. Detachment of the lens distortion from camera intrinsics becomes possible when the former is compensated separately, in advance. This can be done by means of the recently developed calibration harp, which captures distortion field by using the straightness measure of tightened strings in different orientations. Another difficulty, given a distortion-compensated calibration image, is how to eliminate a perspective bias. The perspective bias occurs when using centers of circular targets as keypoints, and it gets more amplified with increase of view angle. In order to avoid modelling each circle by a conic function, we rather incorporate conic affine transformation function into the minimization procedure for homography estimation. Our experiments show that separate elimination of distortion and perspective bias is effective and more stable for camera's intrinsics estimation than global calibration method
