In 16 Beiträgen und drei Vortragszusammenfassungen äußern sich anerkannte Expertinnen und Experten zu verschiedenen Fragen und Themenfeldern rund um die Coronavirus-Pandemie und ihre Folgen. Dabei weitet der transdisziplinäre Band die Perspektive über die medizinischen und gesundheitspolitischen Kernbereiche hinaus auf Aspekte der Ethik, der Ökonomik, des Rechts, der Geschichte und der Kunst aus. Die Pandemie wird begriffen als das, was sie ist: ein gesamtgesellschaftliches Phänomen. Das Ergebnis ist eine vielseitige Dokumentation der dynamischen Entwicklung des pandemischen Geschehens der Jahre 2020 bis 2022 und der gesellschaftlich-wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung damit. In doing so, this transdisciplinary work broadens the perspective far beyond the core areas of medicine and health policy to include aspects of ethics, economics, law, history, and art. The pandemic is understood for what it is: a phenomenon that affects society as a whole. The result is a comprehensive documentation of the dynamic development of the pandemic event from 2020 to 2022 and the social and scientific debate about it. The book is a contribution to remembrance, but also to precaution with regard to coming pandemics. At the same time, it counters the rampant scientific skepticism, disinformation and irrationality with the means of scientifically based, open discourse.

Dass Juristen mit ihrer strengen deduktiven Methode oft die besseren Literaturhistoriker sind, besonders, wenn ihre Findigkeit als Sammler noch ihre genaue Recherche bestimmt, hatte schon der Dr.jur. Otto Deneke in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts mit seinen zahlreichen Lichtenberg-Aufsätzen bewiesen. Als der Richter am Landessozialgericht Bernd Achenbach 1976 zum ersten Mal seine damals noch kleine Lichtenberg-Sammlung in der Stadtbibliothek Duisburg öffentlich vorzeigte, wird er schwerlich geahnt haben, dass er alsbald der beste Kenner der Druckgeschichte von Lichtenbergs Werken werden - und wie viele Funde und Entdeckungen er in den folgenden 45 Jahren aus seiner Sammlung noch ziehen würde. Tongan (Polynesian) shows ergative-absolutive (ERG-ABS) patterns in morphology as well as syntax, but the ERG-ABS pattern is not consistent throughout the language. Noun morphology shows a split between clitic pronouns and other types of nouns. In syntax, three phenomena show an ERG-ABS contrast: (a) relativization using the gap strategy is limited to ABS and ERG-relatives require resumption; (b) coordinate reduction applies only if the gap and the antecedent are in the same case, be it ABS or ERG; and (c) only ABS, but not ERG, can serve as the antecedent of the null SE anaphor. No single factor can account for all three of these phenomena and at least two of the three patterns are shown to be better viewed as PF-phenomena. The data suggest that syntactic ergativity should be understood as a construction-specific phenomenon rather than a language-specific property.

This chapter specifies the “baseline” agent-based model of dynamic multiparty competition, which derives from an article published by (Laver 2005). This assumes that each voter has in mind some personal ideal “package” of policy positions and supports the political party that offers the policy package closest to this. The dynamic system at the heart of the model is as follows: voters support their “closest” party in this sense; party leaders adapt the policy packages they offer in light of the revealed pattern of voter support; voters reconsider which party they support in light of the revealed pattern of party policy packages; and this process continues forever. This recursive model describes policy-based party competition as a complex system, and the baseline model specifies three decision rules that party leaders may deploy when they choose party policy positions in such a setting. These rules are Sticker (always keep the same position), Aggregator (move policy to the centroid of the ideal policy positions of your current supporters), and Hunter (if your last policy move increased your support, make another move in the same direction; or else change heading and move in a different direction).

The phrase “German by passport, Russian by heart” summarizes, but at the same time simplifies the complex artistic legacy of Georg Schlicht. Schlicht was born into a family of Volga Germans, brought up in Saratov and educated in Moscow, but was forced to leave Russia in the aftermath of the 1917 upheavals. His creativity reflects the ideological twists and turns of his lifetime and his legacy mirrors his belonging, in the sense of his whereabouts in Germany, the land of his fathers, and the longing for his spiritual home in Tsarist Russia, a country that had ceased to exist. The aesthetic dichotomy of his oeuvre is the theme of this volume, in which an international team of researchers from Britain, Germany, Russia, Belarus and the Netherlands have undertaken, for the first time, to chart and illuminate the various stations of Schlicht’s life and art – an existence that swayed between his Russian motherland and his German fatherland. Rather than applying the (received) reflectionalist model of the relationship between history and culture, they argue in favour of categories such as settlement and mobility, appreciation and neglect, positioning and ambiguity as three modes characteristic of the artistic legacy of migrating people and ideologies. Der Band „Kreativität und Migration. Positionierung und Ambiguität im OEuvre des russlanddeutschen Künstlers Georg Schlicht (1886-1964)“ thematisiert das Außenseiter- und Grenzgängertum einer von dramatischen politischen Umbrüchen gezeichneten Existenz in der Diaspora und deren komplexe und widerspruchsvolle künstlerische Verarbeitung. Schlicht wuchs in Saratov als Sohn eines wolgadeutschen Vaters und einer russischen Mutter auf. Seine künstlerische Ausbildung erhielt er in Moskau. Doch als Reichsdeutscher mit deutschem Pass musste er Russland nach der Revolution von 1917 verlassen und gelangte nach Berlin. Später gehörten Eisenach und Hamburg zu seinen Wohn- und Arbeitsorten und in der NS- und Nachkriegszeit wieder Berlin. Dem Vermächtnis dieses Künstlers widmet sich nun erstmals ein internationales Forscherteam aus Belarus, Deutschland, Großbritannien, den Niederlanden und Russland. Die hier versammelten Beiträge von Ada Raev, Tat’jana Savickaja, Olga Litzenberger, Victor Dönninghaus, Igor Dukhan, Susanne Marten-Finnis, Albert Lemmens, Serge Stommels und Nicolas Dreyer beleuchten den Werdegang von Georg Schlicht aus transkultureller Perspektive. Sie orientieren sich an den Parametern Positionierung und Ambiguität, Mobilität und Sesshaftigkeit, Zuspruch und Ablehnung. Large individual differences in the activity of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) play a key role in risk for cardiovascular disease. This chapter presents an overview of the measurement strategies that can be used to study ANS activity in samples that are sufficiently large to allow genetic analyses. Heart rate variability, in particular, respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is identified as the measure of choice to index parasympathetic activity, whereas preejection period (PEP) is the measure of choice to index sympathetic activity. Twin studies have demonstrated significant genetic contributions to resting levels of both RSA (heritability estimates range from 25 to 71 percent) and PEP (heritability estimates range from 48 to 74 percent) and the genetic variance in these traits seems to further increase under conditions of psychological stress. Identifying the genetic variants that influence parasympathetic and sympathetic activity may increase our understanding of the role of the ANS in cardiovascular disease.

This chapter examines the correspondence between Samuel McGill, a black emigrant to Liberia, and Moses Sheppard, a white Quaker supporter of the American Colonization Society (ACS). It casts light on the vexed role of the ACS in abolitionist thought of the 1850s, as well as on Quaker notions of interracial communication and friendship. The ACS was founded in 1816 by a coalition of northern reformers and southern slaveholders. Its stated goal was to establish a colony in Africa that was to be populated by American free blacks. The ACS would also help to promote the growth of that colony by assisting free blacks who consented to become colonists. Many of its northern supporters (and some of its southern supporters as well) hoped that these efforts would help make possible the gradual end of slavery in the United States. However, the majority of northern free blacks vigorously opposed the ACS and African colonization, denouncing it as a proslavery plot to remove American free blacks from the land of their birth.

This textbook was created on the initiative of the scientists associated with the “UW for Climate” team, by 16 experts from the University of Warsaw and other academic centers, representing various fields of knowledge, such as physics, chemistry, biology, ecology, economics, psychology and engineering. Thus, it is an interdisciplinary textbook, just like the issue of climate change itself. The textbook is addressed to the university students interested in the basics of knowledge about climate change, regardless of the field of their study, as well as to the high school students and teachers. The individual topics of the “Climate ABC” are related to such areas of school knowledge as: physics, chemistry, biology and ecology, geography and social studies. The textbook also accompanies the online course under the same name offered by the University of Warsaw. The book is divided into four parts, presenting the mechanisms of global warming (part 1), its causes (part 2), consequences (part 3) and actions that can prevent the most negative effects of climate change (part 4).

This chapter illustrates how syncretisms can be used as a tool to diagnose hidden structure inside what is usually considered an indivisible unit, i.e. a negative marker. Based on semantic, scopal, stacking, and functional properties of negative markers, it is proposed that negative markers can be classified in four groups: scalar quantity markers, classifier markers, focus markers, and tense markers. A study of these four different types of markers in a typological sample shows that meaningful syncretism patterns can be detected. If the markers are ordered in such a way that syncretic markers are contiguous and that no ABA patterns arise, then the derived sequence reflects the natural semantic scope of negation, i.e. from wide to narrow scope or from narrow to wide. This result leads to a decomposition of a negative marker into five syntactico-semantic features, i.e. Neg, Q, Class, Foc, and T.

UMN signs at spinal levels include spasticity, slowness of motor activation, hyperactive deep tendon reflexes and extensor plantar responses, whereas UMN signs at the cranial level include spastic dysarthia (slow, labored, nasal); slowness of tongue movements, and hyperactive jaw, gag, and facial reflexes. LMN signs at the spinal level include muscle atrophy, fasciculations, and weakness and LMN signs at the cranial level include tongue atrophy and weakness, facial weakness, tongue and facial fasciculations, palatal weakness, weak cough, and dysphonia. ALA is fatal in 2 to 4 years, and the only medication known to prolong tracheostomy-free survival

The Iraq-based group that was once led by Abu Mus‘ab al-Zarqawi and called “Jama‘at al-Tawhid wa-al-Jihad” is the only regional jihadi group that was brought under Al-Qaeda’s fold by Osama bin Laden. Judging by primary sources internal to AQ, bin Laden and other AQ leaders lived to regret that decision. The same group, which now calls itself the Islamic State, has over the years changed its name to reflect its gradual and ultimate separation from Al-Qaeda. Much like a trying relationship between a parent and a rebellious adolescent, the group’s years under Al-Qaeda were difficult on both. This chapter examines the evolution of the Islamic State in relation to AQ, its claim to statehood since 2006, and the growing ideological divide that separates it from AQ.

Die Ausstellung widmet sich dem progressiven Künstler Paul Gangolf, der in europäischen Metropolen wirkte und 1936 im KL Esterwegen ermordet wurde. Paul Gangolf, der eigentlich Paul Löwy hieß und jüdischer Religion war, wurde 1879 in Königsberg geboren. Er wirkte ab 1900 künstlerisch in Berlin, wo er vielfältige Kontakte zu wichtigen Vertreterinnen und Vertretern der aufkommenden Avantgarde hatte; wie etwa zu Else Lasker-Schüler oder Wieland Herzfelde. Renommierte Museen und Sammler kauften seine Werke an. Den Höhepunkt seines Schaffens erreichte er in den 1920er Jahren, als er in Berlin, London und Paris arbeitete und ausstellte. Nach der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten wurde er zweimal verhaftet und in das KL Esterwegen gebracht. Kurz nach seiner zweiten Ankunft im Lager 1936 ermordete die Lager-SS Paul Gangolf bei einem Zwangsarbeitseinsatz. Der von der Außenwelt fast unbemerkte Tod im Konzentrationslager trug dazu bei, dass Paul Gangolf schnell in Vergessenheit geriet. This essay examines a series of Coca Cola advertisements that offer insight into notions of neighborhood and community in the U.S. along with U.S. foreign policy in the 1940s. It focuses on the relationship between the U.S. Good Neighbor policy and a 1944 ad set in Panama. The author argues that a significant relationship existed between U.S. imperialism at the time and U.S. domestic racial anxieties. These ads promoted an association between Coca Cola and an “American way of life,” but they also reflected racially limited, exclusionary ideas of community that operated domestically and were exported to other parts of the world through U.S. imperial practices. Invoking a broad understanding of imperialism that stresses economic, political, cultural, and ideological aspects of imperialism, the author draws on the work of Edward Said, Michael Doyle, and Amy Kaplan. The essay includes a detailed analysis of the 1944 Coca Cola ad set in Panama, but concludes by looking at a series of post-WWII ads and their implications. Spellacy notes that the end of WWII signaled the end of the period of U.S. enthusiasm for Latin America, but the historical markers of enthusiasm and lack of interest matter in multiple ways. One example is the early Civil Rights movement in the U.S. The soda fountain might often have been associated with innocence and nostalgia for small-town life in the U.S., but this was, after all, the same era marked by early U.S. Civil Rights battles.

The religious orders recruited the aid of the Indian ruling classes in introducing Christianity, and this alliance served to support both the new religion and the old elites. Their monopoly of alphabetic literacy helped to guarantee their status within indigenous society and provided a vital tool for mediating with the Spanish overlords. Although generally denied access to the highest ranks within the church, Indian elites received a privileged education that placed them in control of parish administration and parish schools, where the ABCs of reading and the basic catechism lessons were linked in the same printed primers. The religious orders debated how much religious instruction was required for a valid baptism. Christian identity was measured by the ability to recite the basic prayers, but rote learning unenhanced by explanation produced a weak grasp of Christian doctrine.

This chapter considers the rise to prominence by enslaved and freed persons in the major urban centers of the first Abbasid period (c. 750–900 CE). It uses the example of elite female performers at the Abbasid court, and, as evidence, a set of passages concerning three of the women, all of which occur in the 10th-century Kitab al-Aghani (Book of Songs) by Abu al-Faraj al-Isbahani (d.c. 972). The passages voice the same complaint: that the singer in question was wrongly enslaved. These texts are then weighed in light of the question of upward social mobility. The singers, despite the odds, achieved and, in certain cases, sustained preeminence. The phenomenon is familiar to historians, as a number of Abbasid–era notables emerged from slavery to achieve elite standing, whether as members of political, commercial, and military circles or at the highest levels of culture and scholarship.

His doctoral dissertation was the very first Oxford D.Phil. in modern Arabic literature, completed in 1968 under the supervision of Mustafa Badawi. That same year, he took a position in Arabic language and literature at the University of Pennsylvania, the oldest professorial post in Arabic in the United States. Roger Allen has been phenomenally prolific: fifty books and translations, two hundred articles and counting—on Arabic language pedagogy, on translation, on Arabic literary history, criticism and literature. He is also one of the most decorated and acclaimed translators of Arabic literature. This chapter, written creatively as a scripted conversation between a professor and a doctoral student, asks how researchers might study music-making in a plethora of community music settings using arts-based methods. On the surface, arts-based educational research (ABER), art-based research (ABR), creative analytical practices (CAP), and arts inquiry (AI), may seem one and the same, but there are distinctive historical and theoretical nuances between them. We crafted this composition in a reflexive manner with theory and research embedded in the scripted conversation to explore these nuances. We point towards the conclusion that music communities, where participants are actively engaged, are well suited to inquiry through methods that include creative ways of representing and understanding both music and learning. In a conversational way, we explore distinctions, contexts, possibilities, problems, and the power of engaging arts-based research in the study of community music-making.

On First Philosophy is the most emblematic work of Abū Yūsuf Ya‛qūb b. Isḥāq al-Kindī’s (ca. 801–ca. 870) surviving treatises. Aiming primarily to prove the oneness of God, the surviving part of the treatise consists of four chapters that form a consistent unit. The chapter provides a close reading of and commentary on the four chapters and shows how the texts unfold by following a very tight argument leading to the thesis toward which the whole treatise seems to aim: the true One, who is the principle of unity and hence the principle of existence of all beings, on the one hand, and the absolutely transcendent God, which can be approached only through a negative theology, on the other, are one and the same principle. In the meantime, al-Kindī would have demonstrated the noneternity of the world and shown the impossibility of finding sheer unity in the sensible world.

Background This report responds to a need to update the available information about incompatible living-donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) previously published in 2014 which, based on 14 case series and 1 cohort study, concluded that this type of transplants could be a therapeutic option with survival, graft and patient outcomes, adequate and similar to a compatible living-donor kidney transplant, however, these report only included ABO-incompatible information. Objective The purpose of the report is to provide updated evidence on effectiveness and safety in terms of graft survival and survival of patients undergoing incompatible LDKT. Method To answer the question a systematic review of the literature was carried out, by updating the structured searches of the previous existing report. The selection of the references was carried out first by title and abstract. Next, the full-text papers were selected by applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, defined a priori, by a single researcher. In the same way, we proceeded to extract the data from the articles finally selected, and their synthesis in tables similar to those of the previous report, with special attention to the HLA incompatibility LDKT data, since no information was collected in the previous report. Results From 232 localized references, 35 papers on incompatible LDKT have finally been included, 16 with information on HLAi transplant patients and 19 with ABO incompatible transplant patients. In all cases, case series with or without a control group and a very limited number of patients were treated, only 1 study registered more than 1000 patients undergoing incompatible LDKT in 22 centers (Orandi et al. 2014) in the case of HLAi. The information on graft survival in patients undergoing HLA-incompatible LDKT at 1 year is between 90 % (Laftavi et al. 2011) and 100 % (Blumberg et al. 2013; Yamanaga et al. 2013), while the data recorded over five years survival were lower, from 69 % (Couzi et al. 2015) to 94.7 % (Jakson et al. 2015). The 1-year patient survival registered was found between 90.5 % by Sharif et al. 2014 and 100 % (Blumberg et al. 2013 and Laftavi et al. 2011). The 5-year patient survival recorded is in the range of 59.2 % (in one of the subgroups described by Orandi et al. ) when the other HLAi subgroup does offer similar figures to the rest of the studies, around 86 % survival and the 5-year value provided by Kim et al. which registered 95.8 %. In general, for LDKT with ABO incompatibility, the results of the previous review from 2012 are maintained, with a 1-year graft survival in ABOi-type living donor kidney transplants recorded in up to 8 of the 19 included studies and one 84 % minimum (Bachmann et al. 2018). For patient survival at 1 year, it is 100 % or very close in all the studies on ABOi and figures are high, but somewhat lower, for patient survival at five years (between 92 % of Melexopoulus et al. and 97.7 % from Subramanian et al.). Conclusions There is great variability in the information presented by the studies, so that it make difficult to group together. The quality of the evidence is very limited, as these are case series studies with a high risk of bias, many without a control group, and others with comparative cohort results (historical retrospectives). However, the results shown are consistent and the claims of the previous 2012 report are maintained. Graft survival and patient survival for patients undergoing HLA-incompatible LDKT are high and comparable to values offered by ABOi transplants and ABO compatible transplants. In the studies on LDKT with ABOi data, the results collected on both survival variables maintain the statements of the previous report, remaining at high values. A single localized study about economic efficiency aspects was carried out in the United States, the authors conclude that the LDKT can be an efficient option in terms of cost per QALY, although this conclusion is not directly transferable to our National Health System.

Following the discovery of the ABO blood groups by Landsteiner in 1901, Albert Hustin described the first transfusion of a whole blood unit in 1914. The modern transfusion era really begins in 1916 with the discovery of sodium citrate as an anticoagulant by the same physician, allowing blood conservation in dedicated packs. Since that time, many advances have been made especially over the past two decades in the storage, the conservation, and the laboratory testing of blood components and in transfusion medicine practice. Transfusion of whole blood has been replaced by blood component therapy, which consists of the administration of packed red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, or platelets. Although blood transfusion is safer than ever, the risk of complications will never reach zero. The risk of infectious transfusion-transmitted diseases has been markedly reduced by the implementation of extensive infectious disease testing, donor selection, and pathogen-inactivation procedures. In countries with a high human development index, the leading causes of allogeneic blood transfusion-related deaths actually resulted from immunological and septic complications. The first section of this chapter describes the structure, function, and immunological aspects of the different blood components that are routinely transfused today. The second section details the composition of the different blood components, their indications, the pre-transfusion compatibility tests, and the main adverse effects associated with their transfusion.

This chapter presents a discussion on licences. Licences can be grouped into a number of categories, including bare licences, contractual licences, estoppel licences, statutory licences, and licences coupled with an interest. The key feature of a bare licence is that A is under no duty to B not to revoke the licence. The distinction between a bare licence and a contractual licence turns on the question of whether A is under a contractual duty to B. An estoppel licence, as well as a statutory licence, is similar to a contractual licence: the key difference is the source of A's duty to B. The concept of a ‘licence coupled with an interest’ has been applied by the courts as a way in which to develop the remedies available to B when he has a contractual licence, whilst at the same time technically respecting past decisions that limited those remedies. The chapter considers whether particular forms of licence ought to count as equitable interests in land, and also examines the means by which a licensee may be protected against a third party, even if the licence itself is only a personal right.

How should the human body be treated? Should bodies be slaughtered, starved, tortured, sold, and shot in the streets? Whose bodies should be treated in these ways and whose protected from harm? Who has the right to seek redress in cases of abuse and who is seen as fit for dehumanization? This book addresses these very questions, examining materials from the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, ancient Near Eastern literature, and contemporary American society. In the first book-length work on personhood in ancient Israel, the author reveals widespread intersections between violence and personhood in both this society and the wider region. Relations of domination and subordination were so important to the culture and social organization of ancient Israel that these relations too often determined the boundaries of personhood itself. Rather than being fixed, personhood was malleable—it could be and was violently erased in many social contexts. The book exposes a violence–personhood–masculinity nexus in which domination allowed those in control to animalize and brutalize the bodies of subordinates. Perhaps even more noteworthy, the author argues that in particular social contexts in the contemporary “Western” world, this same nexus operates, holding devastating consequences for particular social groups. If the violence of Abu Ghraib calls to mind that of Ashurbanipal, this is no accident but is instead because both arise from of a certain construction of personhood that could not exist without violence.
