Let f : A → B be a ring homomorphism and let J be an ideal of B. In this paper, we investigate the transfer of notions elementary divisor ring, Hermite ring and Bézout ring to the amalgamation A ⋈f J. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for A ⋈f J to be an elementary divisor ring where A and B are integral domains. In this case it is shown that A ⋈f J is an Hermite ring if and only if it is a Bézout ring. In particular, we study the transfer of the previous notions to the amalgamated duplication of a ring A along an A-submodule E of Q(A) such that E2 ⊆ E.

Abstract Despite extensive research and several stunning breakthroughs in the synthesis of interlocked molecular species, [3]catenanes, Borromean rings and ring-in-ring complexes are exceedingly rare and their targeted synthesis remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a series of Cp*Rh-based homogeneous and heterogeneous interlocked structures have been prepared by coordination-driven self-assembly, not only including metalla[2]catenanes and molecular Borromean rings, but also linear metalla[3]catenanes and ring-in-ring complexes. The interlocked structures are all based on bithiophenyl groups. The bithiophenyl groups effectively enhance the strength of the inter-ring interactions and play a crucial role in the formation of these interlocked structures. By taking advantage of the strong interaction between π-donor (D) and π-acceptor (A) groups, the electron-deficient methylviologen cation was introduced into a cationic metallarectangle based on bithiophenyl groups. Taking inspiration from these results, a cationic metallarectangle based on A units was threaded into a metallarectangle based on D units, leading to a heterogeneous D–A ring-in-ring structure.

This chapter examines the juxtaposition of war and sacrifice in Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. Melville has been often identified as a forerunner of later anti-war writers—as an artist engaged from early on in his literary career in denouncing the destruction unleashed on the world by “the most ferocious animal on the face of the earth”: “white, civilized man.” Moby-Dick casts serious doubts regarding the possibility of curbing a violence that keeps frustrating mankind's best hopes from time immemorial. This chapter first considers Father Mapple's sermon and the concept of monstrous double in Moby-Dick, along with the logic of primal sacrifice and the link between sacrifice and survival in the text. It then explores how, in Melville's world, resistance to violence seems to entail further violence, in an endless, tragic cycle of aggressions and counteraggressions, as well as the cultural and narrative logic behind the paradox that no one can be entirely innocent and yet felt spotless as the lamb.

AbstractAzaborines (or borazines) represent an interesting class of heterocycles incorporating a boron–nitrogen structural motif within an aromatic ring system. This creates a system that is isosteric to traditional all-carbon ring systems, as the lone pair on nitrogen can donate into the empty orbital at boron to afford aromatic properties. Reviewed herein are synthetic strategies to access mono- and bicyclic azaborine cores, along with subsequent functionalization strategies, some of which are uniquely applicable due to the inherent dipole imparted on these ring systems.

Recently, the use of green methodologies like sonication, use of ionic liquids, etc. attracted the attention of researchers in the field of organic synthesis as they have advantages such as mild reaction conditions, environmentally benign procedures, etc. Herein, this chapter highlights some recyclable ionic liquids (ILs) catalyzed ring closure reactions of chalcones to obtain several heterocyclic rings viz.; pyrazoles, pyrans, pyrimidines under ultrasonification. These reactions have very important features i.e., short routine, high yields, being environmentally friendly, high functional group tolerance, formation of a single product, high atom economy, high yielding, no need for column purification, etc. The various synthesized compounds were prepared in optimized reaction conditions in good to efficient yields. Analytical and spectral (FTIR, 1H, and 13C NMR) techniques were employed for the structural elucidation of the synthesized compounds. The ionic liquids used in the synthesis are recycled and reused several times.

Hernia is defined as protrusion of a viscus or part of a viscus through a weakening or defect in the wall of its containing cavity. Areas of potential anatomical weakness includes inguinal canal, femoral canal, linea alba, umbilical scar, as well as acquired surgical trauma. The weakening/defect may be acquired (like surgical scar) or congenital (like deep inguinal ring). Raised intraabdominal pressure is the most important factor that leads to the development of hernia through the weak areas. Clinically, the hernia usually presents with an abdominal swelling that progresses gradually over time. The sites of hernia are characteristic and usually points towards the diagnosis. While evaluating a hernia clinically, it is important to identify the content of the hernia sac and whether it suffers any complication, as well as the cause of the hernia development. Failing to identify these prior to surgery, will likely result in morbidity as well as recurrence. This chapter will focus on the clinical art of history taking and examination of different abdominal hernias.

The selective α1-adrenergic receptor antagonist doxazosin is used for the treatment of hypertension. More recently, an experimental report demonstrated that this compound exhibits antiproliferative activity in breast cancer cell lines with similar inhibitory activity to gefitinib, a selective inhibitor of EGFR in the active state (EGFRAC). This experimental study provided evidence that doxazosin can be employed as an anticancer compound, however, the structural basis for its inhibitory properties is poorly understood at the atomic level. To gain insight about this molecule, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation with the molecular mechanics generalized Born surface area (MMGBSA) approach was employed to explore the structural and energetic features that guide the inhibitory properties of doxazosin and gefitinib in overexpressing EGFR/HER2 cell lines. Our result suggest that doxazosin exerts its inhibitory properties in breast cancer cell lines by targeting EGFR/HER2 but mainly HER2 in the inactive state (HER2IN), whereas gefitinib by targeting mainly EGFRAC, in line with previous literature. Decomposition of the binding affinity into individual contributions of HER2IN-doxazosin and EGFRAC-gefitinib systems detected hot spot residues but also showed polar interactions of Met801/Met793 with the quinazoline ring of both compounds. Principal component (PC) analysis revealed that the molecular recognition of the HER2IN-doxazosin system was linked to conformational changes but EGFRAC-gefitinib was not.

ABSTRACT This paper summarizes the hydrological variability in eastern California (central Sierra Nevada) for the past 3000 yr based on three distinct paleoclimate proxies, δ18O, total inorganic carbon (TIC), and magnetic susceptibility (chi). These proxies, which are recorded in lake sediments of Pyramid Lake and Walker Lake, Nevada, and Mono Lake and Owens Lake, California, indicate lake-level changes that are mostly due to variations in Sierra Nevada snowpack and rainfall. We evaluated lake-level changes in the four Great Basin lake systems with regard to sediment-core locations and lake-basin morphologies, to the extent that these two factors influence the paleoclimate proxy records. We documented the strengths and weaknesses of each proxy and argue that a systematic study of all three proxies together significantly enhances our ability to characterize the regional pattern, chronology, and resolution of hydrological variability. We used paleomagnetic secular variation (PSV) to develop paleomagnetic chronostratigraphies for all four lakes. We previously published PSV records for three of the lakes (Mono, Owens, Pyramid) and developed a new PSV record herein for Walker Lake. We show that our PSV chronostratigraphies are almost identical to previously established radiocarbon-based chronologies, but that there are differences of 20–200 yr in individual age records. In addition, we used eight of the PSV inclination features to provide isochrons that permit exacting correlations between lake records. We also evaluated the temporal resolution of our proxies. Most can document decadal-scale variability over the past 1000 yr, multidecadal-scale variability for the past 2000 yr, and centennial-scale variability between 2000 and 3000 yr ago. Comparisons among our proxies show a strong coherence in the pattern of lake-level variability for all four lakes. Pyramid Lake and Walker Lake have the longest and highest-resolution records. The δ18O and TIC records yield the same pattern of lake-level variability; however, TIC may allow a somewhat higher-frequency resolution. It is not clear, however, which proxy best estimates the absolute amplitude of lake-level variability. Chi is the only available proxy that records lake-level variability in all four lakes prior to 2000 yr ago, and it shows consistent evidence of a large multicentennial period of drought. TIC, chi, and δ18O are integrative proxies in that they display the cumulative record of hydrologic variability in each lake basin. Tree-ring estimations of hydrological variability, by contrast, are incremental proxies that estimate annual variability. We compared our integrated proxies with tree-ring incremental proxies and found a strong correspondence among the two groups of proxies if the tree-ring proxies are smoothed to decadal or multidecadal averages. Together, these results indicate a common pattern of wet/dry variability in California (Sierra Nevada snowpack/rainfall) extending from a few years (notable only in the tree-ring data) to perhaps 1000 yr. Notable hydrologic variability has occurred at all time scales and should continue into the future.

The main objective of this paper is to improve a jacketed vessel. The jacketed vessel is usually chosen to heat the contents of the vessel. The chamber or annulus contains fluid under pressure to heat the inner vessel contents. The initial over-all dimensions of the vessel are based on the capacity of the stored liquid. The design was in accordance with the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Div 1. The jacketed vessel bottom head and jacket bottom head are being improved to withstand internal and external design pressures. Bottom head of the jacket can be reinforced in one of the three ways, namely: (1) rings which are radial (these rings also create flow for the fluid); (2) attachment of the rings to the bottom jacket head with stays, since rings cannot be physically welded to the bottom jacket; or (3) there is a possibility, the new bottom head and jacketed head combination can be cast, but that would not be economically feasible. This leads to the following six configurations considered in this paper and they are: (1) internal pressure of 50 psi, (2) external pressure + vacuum pressure of 65 psi, (3) reinforcement with 5 rings with external pressure of 65 psi, (4) rings welded with the bottom jacket head with external pressure of 65 psi, (5) welded with stays on ring location (stay diameter of 1 inch) with external pressure of 65 psi, and (6) welded with stays on ring location (stay diameter of 1.5 inch) with external pressure of 65 psi. The pattern of stays chosen for this analysis is one of uniform distribution on ring locations, which are radially situated. The design dimensions based on Code sizing are used to recalculate the stresses for the jacket vessel. The dimensional jacketed vessel is modeled using STAAD III Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software. The design is found to be safe for the specific configuration considered herein with stays.

In order to use vortex rings for mass and momentum transport, the relationship between the circulation of vortex rings generated continuously by a pulsating jet flow, which are referred to herein as ‘cyclic vortex rings’, and the conditions of jet flow are investigated experimentally. The results indicate that the formation time at which the cyclic vortex rings reach maximum circulation, i.e., become optimal vortex rings, can be estimated using the concept proposed by Gharib et al. Based on their concept, the optimal vortex rings are formed when the translation velocity of the vortex core becomes equal to the convection velocity of the shear layer of the jet. The translation velocity of vortex rings and the convection velocity of shear layers can be estimated by empirical equations under pulsating jet conditions. Therefore, the formation time of the optimal vortex rings can be estimated from the pulsating jet conditions, when the circulation of vortex rings stop growing and the vortex rings start to become disconnected from the shear layers. The circulation of vortex rings estimated using this method is in good agreement with the measurement data within the measurement error. There exists a specific Strouhal number at which the circulation of the vortex rings reaches the maximum value. This Strouhal number is expected to be the optimal generating condition of cyclic vortex rings for using transportation.

The floating roofs are used in large aboveground storage tanks to prevent evaporation of the content. The single-deck floating roof, which is considered herein, consists of a thin circular plate called a deck attached to a buoyant ring of box-shaped cross section called a pontoon. Under the accumulated rain water condition, the deck is deflected largely, and both its edge part and the pontoon are compressed circumferentially. Since the load condition due to the rain water depends on the deflected deck shape, it is difficult to find the unique equilibrium condition. This paper describes the deformation analysis for the single-deck floating roofs under the accumulated rain water condition using the geometrically nonlinear axisymmetric shell finite element method. The load incremental method, in which the equivalent nodal forces due to the rain water converges to coincide with the rain water load derived from both the current rain water volume and the deflected deck shape, is used.

Abstract Combining today’s computer technology with new generation, multiple-action, hydraulic press equipment, has created a new process opportunity in deep drawing. Integrating these modern machine and computer controls with innovative programming and tool designs, has led to the development of a production process that produces a double reverse-drawn, cylindrical shell that significantly exceeds traditional Limiting Drawing Ratios (LDR). The method used to produce these shells employs a recently developed technique, herein referred to as Tractive Kinematic Regression, or more simply, the TKR process. The TKR process promotes material flow by “feeding” material into the die cavity, as opposed to the punch having to “draw” or “pull” in the flange. This is accomplished through the use of concurrent - but unequal - force and motion curves of a forward moving punch and a regressing (reverse moving) die ring. The computer controlled kinematics, forces and motion curves resulted in less material straining and thereby, provided increased formability and improved LDR.

Many important industrial problems in the control of rotating machinery with active magnetic bearings concern the minimization of the rotor vibration response to poorly characterized disturbances at a single or several shaft locations, these typically not corresponding to those of a sensor or actuator. Herein, we examine experimental results of a multivariable controller obtained via μ synthesis with a laboratory test rig. These indicate that a significant improvement in performance can be obtained with a multivariable μ controller over that achieved with an optimal decentralized PD controller.

The floating roofs are used in large cylindrical storage tanks to prevent evaporation of oil. The single-deck floating roof, considered herein, consists of a thin circular plate called “deck” attached to a buoyant ring of box-shaped cross section called “pontoon”. The deck plates are deformed to create waves and they are subjected to cyclic bending due to wind load. This phenomenon may lead to initiate fatigue cracks at the welding joints. It is important to know the vibration characteristics of the waves in the deck plate. The authors have reported a CFD analysis of a cylindrical storage tank due to uniform wind flow in another paper. This paper presents the axisymmetric finite element analysis for the sloshing response of the single-deck floating roofs in a cylindrical storage tank subjected to wind load obtained by the CFD analysis. It is assumed that the liquid is incompressible and inviscid, and the roof is linear elastic while the sidewall and the bottom are rigid. The basic vibration characteristics of the waves in the deck plate, such as frequency and amplitude, are investigated.

The work presented here is a collaborative approach to achieving a reliable gas tight seal in fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) flanged joints using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) gaskets. There are many advantages to incorporating FRP flanged piping systems in today’s chemical process industry plant build. As regulations on reliability and fugitive emissions become stricter, it is more important than ever to eliminate possible damage and leak paths at the flanged connections in these systems. This paper details a case study on a collaboration between a chemical plant operator (end user), an ePTFE gasket manufacturer, and a FRP piping original equipment manufacturer. Over a twenty-four month period a FRP flanged system was designed and validated using a custom FRP stub and ring, also known as a lap joint, flange with an ePTFE gasket. The result was the development of a FRP bolted flange system that successfully achieved a reliable gas tight seal for aggressive chemicals. Beginning with a theoretical model and ending with experimental lab analyses, the conclusive results are included herein.
