Callus cultures were initiated from immature embryos of three dent corn inbred lines: FR27rhm (B73 derivative), 79-R4443, and EXL1; and four sweet corn (sh-2) inbred lines: f84-267, f84-275, f84-278, and f84-700. Extensive qualitative variation was noted in self-pollinated progeny of plants regenerated from callus of FR27rhm, EXL1, and f84-700; quantitative variation was measured in self-pollinated progeny of plants regenerated from cultures of almost all inbreds. Most qualitative mutations were visible in the first self-pollinated generation; chimerism in regenerated plants was indicated by initial segregation of some mutants after two self-pollinations. All culture-induced mutant phenotypes were similar to known spontaneous mutations in maize; preliminary data indicate most have single-gene recessive inheritance. For qualitative variation, average mutation frequencies per regenerated plant were calculated as 0.18, 0.71, and 0.64 for FR27rhm, EXL1, and f84-700, respectively. Differences in mutation frequency among the four sweet corn lines were determined to have a genetic basis. Significant quantitative variation included alterations in date of pollen shed and silk emergence, silk emergence relative to pollen shed, plant height, ear, and kernel characteristics. These results show genotypic differences in the extent of qualitative somaclonal variation, with some quantitative variation having possible applications for conventional corn breeding programs.

Electrokinetic, thermic, and kinetic properties of products of NADP-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDHP; EC 1.1.1.42) loci of Astyanax scabripinnis (Pisces, Characidae) collected at three different altitudes (700 m, 1,800 m, and 1,920 m) of Grande Stream at Campos do Jordão, State of São Paulo, Brazil, were analyzed. Two IDHP bidirectionally divergent loci, a single skeletal muscle, the IDHP-A*, and a single liver IDHP-B*, both polymorphic, were detected in the three different altitude populations. The variant allele *128 at the IDHP-A* locus, had its highest frequency detected in the 1,920 m population (0.494). Among the nine variant alleles detected at the IDHP-B* locus (*37, *57, *69, *79, *85, *114, *119, *124, and *140), the *37 and 79 were detected only in 1,800 m population. Chi-square values showed that only the 700 m population is not in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for the IDHP-A* locus, while for the IDHP-B* locus, no population is. Homogeneity Chi² test indicated that the populations are significantly different in their A and B phenotype frequencies. Wright's FST mean value (0.036 and 0.32, IDHP-A* and IDHP-B*, respectively) was 0.178 for the three altitude populations which means that 82% of total genetic diversity was found among individuals of each one of the populations. Stability at environmental temperatures (16º to 21ºC), and apparent Km and Vmax values of each A-phenotype skeletal muscle crude extract suggest different roles of A-isoforms during the increased lipogenesis that occurs in fish at low temperatures.

The article justifies the relevance of studying the temperature effect of cutting inserts made of (Ti,W)C–Co group hard tool alloys on internal microstresses of the 2nd kind. It contains the data of X-ray studies of samples of hard (TiC 30% WC 66% Co 4%), (TiC 15% WC 79% Co 6%) and (TiC 5% WC 85% Co 10%) alloys using XRD 7000 Shimadzu Maxima automated diffractometer with an add-on heater at temperatures from 20 to 700°C.

The integration of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) in hybrid power generation systems offers the opportunity to achieve higher electric efficiencies. In the SOS-CO2 cycle [1], a newly developed cycle for blue power production (i.e., power generated starting from natural gas while capturing CO2), the SOFC cathode is supplied with mixtures of CO2 and O2, up to 79% CO2 molar fraction, while the anode is supplied with a reformate feed, containing H2, CH4, CO, CO2, and water vapour. Aim of this work is to experimentally evaluate the performance and the durability of industrial 5x5 cm2 Ni-YSZ anode-supported SOFCs under the SOS-CO2 cycle conditions, focusing on the effects of the CO2-rich cathodic atmosphere. The cells mounted a LSCF-based (La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3) single phase cathode, coated by a current collection layer of LSC (La0.6Sr0.4CoO3). Laboratory tests were performed at 700°C, acquiring polarization (I/V) curves and EIS spectra by means of a Horiba – FuelCon C50 Evaluator test station. Initial investigations with 7% humidified H2 and 21/79 O2/CO2 cathodic mixture revealed 25% power loss compared to the base case with cathodic air. The test showed not only that the loss of performance was stable in time, but also that the power reduction was reversible since the initial performance in air was recovered. The EIS spectra showed an increase of the polarization resistance and of the ohmic resistance upon feeding CO2. This latter observation suggested a reduction of the electronic conductivity of the cathode, compatible with the formation of Sr carbonates on the perovskite surface [2–4]. To assess the performance of the SOFC under the operating conditions of the SOS-CO2 cycle, the anode was supplied with reformate. Compared to the base case with humidified hydrogen and air, the current density at 0.7 V decreased by 37% (490 mA/cm2). When supplying the 21/79 O2/CO2 mixture at the cathode, the current density stabilized at 420 mA/cm2 (Figure 1). Durability tests (over 300 h) at 700°C with reformate and 21/79 O2/CO2 mixture highlighted a moderate decrease of the current density at 0.7 V. After these tests, the cathode was characterized post-mortem with XRD, SEM and Raman to analyse the consequences of the prolonged exposure to CO2. To further quantify the effect of CO2 on the cathode, symmetric button cells were also characterized with EIS, measuring ohmic and polarization resistances. The results suggested that the adsorption of CO2 is reversible and indicated a better suitability of LSCF- compared to LSC-based cathodes for operations with CO2-rich mixtures. Experiments performed between 550 and 700°C at varying CO2 and O2 partial pressures allowed to describe the kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction and extract its activation energy. A study was conducted in the greenhouse to investigate the effects of red light (600-700 nm) on the subsequent occurrence of seedling infection of bell pepper, pumpkin, and tomato caused by Phytophthora capsici. Three- or 4-week-old seedlings were inoculated with zoospores or transplanted into pots filled with artificially infested soil mix. Red light treatment of seedlings reduced Phytophthora damping-off by up to 79%. Only 21% to 36% of red light-treated seedlings became infected, whereas 78% to 100% of the control seedlings, grown either in natural daylight (NDL) or under white light (WL), became infected and died. The height, and fresh and dry weight of seedlings treated with red light were significantly higher than those grown under NDL or WL.

Organisasi Internasional Diabetes Federation (IDF) memperkirakan terdapat 463 juta orang pada usia 20-79 tahun di dunia menderita diabetes mellitus (DM) tahun 2019 atau setara dengan angka 9,3% dari total penduduk pada usia yang sama. Berdasarkan jenis kelamin, IDF memperkirakan prevalensi DM tahun 2019 yaitu 9% pada perempuan dan 9,65% pada laki-laki. Prevalensi diabetes meningkat seiring penambahan umur menjadi 19,9% atau 111,2 juta orang (umur 65-79 tahun). Angka diprediksi meningkat hingga 578 juta di tahun 2030 dan 700 juta di tahun 2045. Pusat Data dan Informasi PERSI (Perhimpunan Rumah Sakit Indonesia), prevalensi penderita DM dengan komplikasi neuropati sebesar lebih dari 50%. Tujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan lama menderita dengan kejadian neuropati diabetikum pada pasien diabetes melitus Metode secara deskriptif analitik dengan pendekatan cross sectional dan tehnik pengambilan sampel menggunakan purposive sampling sejumlah 84 responden/ pasien diabetes melitus tipe 1 dan tipe 2. Instrumen menggunakan kuesioner dan monofilament test dan data dianalisa dengan uji statistik chi-square. Hasil didapatkan 71 responden (84,5 %) yang lama menderita DM < 5 tahun, 46 responden (54,8%) mengalami neuropati diabetikum dan nilai Asymp Sig 0,942 (P-value = 0,005). Based on gender, IDF estimates that the prevalence of DM in 2019 is 9% in women and 9.65% in men. The prevalence of diabetes increases with increasing age to 19.9% or 111.2 million people (aged 65-79 years). The figure is predicted to increase to 578 million in 2030 and 700 million in 2045. According to the PERSI Data and Information Center (Indonesian Hospital Association), the prevalence of DM sufferers with neuropathic complications is more than 50%. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between length of stay and the incidence of diabetic neuropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus. Descriptive analytical method with a cross sectional approach and sampling technique used purposive sampling with a total of 84 respondents/patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The instrument used a questionnaire and monofilament test and data. analyzed by chi-square statistical test. The results showed that 71 respondents (84.5%) had long suffered from DM < 5 years, 46 respondents (54.8%) had diabetic neuropathy and the Asymp Sig value was 0.942 (P-value = 0.005). Because the value is 0.942 > 0.005, it is concluded that there is no significant relationship between the length of suffering and the incidence of diabetic neuropathy.Keywords: diabetes mellitus; long suffering; diabetic neuropathy

The diuretic effect of aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa has always been noted by the early botanists who studied the plant. On the other hand, very little scientific work to confirm this state of affairs has been done. In this pharmacological study, we provide scientific evidence to previous observations. Using an electrolyte analyzer to evaluate urinary volume and ions and appropriate experimental protocols on wistar strain rats, we have shown that: The aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa (AEHS) administered at doses of 200, 500 and 700 mg / kg BW induces a dose-dependent and significant increase in urinary excretion in rats. This increase was 12.75 ± 1.971 mL / kg, 23.20 ± 2.082 mL / kg and 29.42 ± 2.097 mL / kg BW, respectively is after 24 hours. That is a respective increase of 55.5, 182 and 333% compared to the control. The aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa (AEHS) uses at the dose of 700 mg / kg BW results in a reduction of the first urination time by 26.30% compared to the control. The determination of electrolytes in rats treated with 700 mg / kg BW after 24 hours showed high concentrations of sodium, potassium and chlorine in the urine. These different concentrations are for sodium of 72.51%, potassium of 76.54% and 58.81% for chlorine relative to the concentration of the controls. Compared to AEHS, hydrochlorothiazide at 25 mg / kg BW results in urinary excretion of 80.79% sodium, 85.30% potassium and 75.97% chlorine. Similarly with furosemide uses at 20 mg / kg BW), the concentrations are 86% sodium, 79% potassium and 71.58% chlorine. Compared with control rats, the Na + / K + ratio did not vary significantly in the treated animals. AEHS is therefore a diuretic substance like hydrochlorothiazide and furosemide.

Cucurbitaceae (Cucurbit family) includes about 268 genera in the world. Hara and Williams (1979) reported its altogether 21 genera, 30 species and 2 forma from Nepal, while Press et al. (2000) added 2 more varieties and 1 forma. The present paper communicates one more new genus for flora of Nepal, recorded in Churia and mid hills of eastern Nepal. The specimens were collected from Sindrang Village Development Committee (VDC) of Bhojpur district, at elevation of 700 m and Raja Rani Pond vicinity of Bhogateni VDC, Morang district, Koshi Zone (Churia Hills), at the elevation of 450 m. The specimens were identified with the help of literature (Grierson and Long, 1991). Extreme Radial Growth Reaction of Norway Spruce Along An Altitudinal Gradient in the Šumava MountainsExtreme radial growth reactions were analyzed over a 79-year period (1922-2000) to compare response of Norway spruce (Picea abies[L.] Karst.) along an altitudinal gradient (376-1221 m a.s.l.) in the Šumava Mountains, the Czech Republic. Extreme growth events were defined as pointer years, when an average percentage of the site pointer years reached at least 50% strength observed at the relevant altitudinal zone (low < ca. 700 m; middle ca. 700-950 m, high > ca. 950 m). The comparison of the pointer years showed a specific pattern for altitudinal zones (Low: negative pointer years 2000, 1992, 1984, 1976, 1971 and positive 1997, 1975, 1960, 1949, 1932, 1926; middle: negative 2000, 1992, 1976 and positive 1997, 1989, 1978; high: negative 1996, 1980, 1974, 1965 and positive 1989, 1963, 1927). Negative pointer years were usually induced by summer drought at low elevations and by wet-cold summer at high altitudinal zone. These two main limiting factors were probably combined at the middle altitudinal zone. Detailed understanding of the extreme tree ring pattern along the altitudinal and geographical scale may be used as one of the additional indicators of dendrochronological dating and provenance identification of spruce sample among altitudinal zones in the Šumava Mountains.

Abstract Background The role of physical activity in enhancing health is well recognized. However, in the more industrialized countries, physical activity rates are declining, and the emerging COVID-19 pandemic may amplify this scenario. Thus, this study aimed to report the Italian population’s physical activity profile living in the North-western regions during the national lockdown. Methods Physical activity was assessed using the official Italian short form of IPAQ, intended for Social Networking Services (SNS). Participation was voluntary, and people could fill the questionnaire simply by clicking on a specific link. Results The final sample size was 612 Italians, male and female, equally distributed (49.1% male and 50.9% female). Data showed a percentage of 15.4% of inactive subjects (MET < 700), 61.8% of moderate-active (MET 700–2500), and 22.9% of active people (MET > 2500). Women were more inactive than men (p < 0.01; 57.4% vs 42.6%). Furthermore, participants were classified into four classes of age: 18–29; 30–44; 45–59; and 60–79. Class 18–29 was prevalent (p < 0.01, 68.3%) and showed higher levels of physical activity (p < 0.05). Conclusions Italians living in North-western regions maintained a moderate amount of physical activity during the quarantine. This behavior should be encouraged, particularly among women that usually appear to be less active than men.

The tensile properties, scratch behaviors and sliding wear of an oxide scale obtained on the surface of titanium Grade 2 in the process of isothermal oxidation at 600, 700 and 800 °C were determined in the study. It was shown that the intensity of the oxidation process increased along with an increase in temperature and extension of the oxidation time, which translated directly into the thickness of the deposited oxide layers. The tests showed that isothermal oxidation had an adverse effect on the tensile properties of titanium. After oxidation, it was found that the maximum reduction in tensile strength, Rm, was approximately 17.5%, and of the yield point, Rp0.2, approximately 13.9%. Examination of scratch behaviors of the oxide scale showed that the layers obtained at temperatures of 700 (72 h) and 800 °C (2 and 6 h) had the best adhesion properties. The best resistance to scratching was exhibited by the layer obtained after 6 h oxidation at 800 °C (critical load: Lc1 = 63 N, Lc2 = 85 N). The study showed that after oxidation, a considerable reduction in wear factor of a disc made of titanium Grade 2 was observed for both the friction couples used (Al2O3, steel 100Cr6). The maximum reduction in wear factor of the oxidized titanium disc during interaction with Al2O3 balls was ca. 79%, and with 100Cr6 balls, ca. 96%.

The effects of increasing nitrobenzene (NB) concentrations and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the performance of anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) and aerobic completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR) were studied. In the first step the NB concentration was increased from 30 to 700 mg/L at constant COD and flowrates. Maximum COD removal efficiencies in ABR varied between 88–92% as NB concentrations increased from 30 to 210 mg/L. After this dose, COD removal efficiency decreased to 85 and 79% at NB concentrations of 550 and 700 mg/L, respectively. Removal efficiencies of NB were nearly 100% for all NB concentrations in ABR reactor effluent. In the second step, COD and NB concentrations were kept constant while HRT decreased from 10.38 days to 1 day. As HRT decreased from 10.38 to 2.5 days the COD removal efficiencies in the anaerobic and anaerobic/aerobic reactor effluents were 92–94% and 97–98%, respectively. As HRT decreased from 2.5 days to 1 day COD removal efficiencies in the anaerobic and anaerobic/aerobic reactor effluents decreased to 83 and 95%, respectively. This study showed that HRT is a more important operation parameter than increasing NB concentration in ABR /CSTR sequential reactor system. Although ABR/CSTR system exhibited good COD and NB removal efficiencies, the lower HRTs slightly decreased the removal efficiencies compared to increasing NB concentration.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) over Bay of Bengal (BoB) have significant socio-economic impacts on the countries bordering the BoB. In this study, we have examined the structure and thermodynamic features of the TC Hudhud (7th -14th October, 2014) using WRF model. Simulated outputs are in good agreement with the available observations of India Meteorological Department and Joint Typhoon warning Center. At maximum intensity stage, the system’s horizontal size is found around 690 km. Wind and vorticity distributions capture the circulation of the system very well. Most strong winds of 60 ms−1 are extended vertically from 850 hPa to about 700 hPa. Simulation has shown intensification of the system above 200 hPa with wind speed of about 30ms−1. Summary: A prospective semi-longitudinal study was undertaken to determine if urinary neopterin was a predictor for survival in HIV-positive patients. One hundred and one HIV-positive subjects attending a department of genitourinary medicine over a 41-month period were included. Survival data were analysed 6 months after the end of recruitment. Ninety-two subjects were followed up for a minimum of 6 months. Survival figures at 1 and 2 years were 93% (SE 3%) and 79% (SE 5%). There was an inverse relationship between urinary neopterin excretion and 1 and 2-year survival. Two-year survival fell from 70% (SE 6%) for neopterin levels 300 mmol/mol creatinine to 25% (SE 9%) for levels 700 mmol/mol < creatinine ( P 0.001). Urinary neopterin may be a useful non-invasive technique in predicting survival in HIV-positive patients.

Agitação e mistura são operações unitárias essenciais na maioria dos processos industriais e têm por objetivo a obtenção de matérias primas ou produtos uniformes. Quando um sistema de agitação e mistura não está corretamente projetado e controlado obtém-se misturas indesejáveis, o que pode acarretar em perdas de produto e aumento no custo do processo. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo é avaliar um sistema de agitação e mistura que possa gerar dados experimentais para o auxílio de pesquisadores e projetistas de impelidores industriais. Este sistema foi avaliado utilizando quatro diferentes configurações de impelidores (Rushton-Rushton; Rushton-Smith; Smith-Rushton e Smith-Smith) com base em dois parâmetros de desempenho fundamentais do sistema de agitação: tempo de mistura e consumo de energia. O tempo de mistura foi determinado pelo método de pulso de temperatura e o cálculo do consumo de potência foi obtido através de equações da literatura. Avaliou-se os parâmetros de desempenho em três diferentes frequências de rotação: 300, 500 e 700 rpm. A configuração (4) apresentou uma redução no tempo de mistura de 36% (300 rpm), 63% (500 rpm) e 79% (700 rpm) quando comparada com a configuração padrão (1). A partir dos resultados obtidos, foi possível concluir que a configuração (4), obteve os menores tempo de mistura e menor consumo de energia de todas as configurações avaliadas. Além disso, pode-se determinar que a frequência de agitação de 500 rpm foi a mais adequada para este estudo.

Race 4A of Melampsora medusae Thum. produces an incompatible reaction on Populus deltoides Marsh. cv. W-79/307 when incubated at high temperature and low light intensity (26 °C and 100 μE∙m−2∙s−1) or low temperature and high light intensity (17 °C and 700 μE∙m−1∙s−1), but a compatible one at low temperature and low light intensity 17 °C and 100 μE∙m−2∙s−1). When in separate studies, a population of this race was sequentially cultured on detached leaves, at increasing temperatures (17, 20, 23, or 26 °C) or light intensities (100, 300, 500, or 700 μE∙m−2∙s−1), isolates that were adpated to each of these regimes were selected. Such isolates, particularly those from low temperature and low light intensity, exhibited some specificity to their "own" environments, although isolates selected at 26 °C and 500 μE∙m−2∙s−1 were most aggressive at all temperatures and light intensity regimes, respectively. Such adaptation appeared to result from pathogen response to host-mediated environmental selection pressure. Isolate, incubating environment, and their interaction were significant contributors to the variation in aggressiveness traits (disease timing and intensity). This rust demonstrates considerable ability to adapt to varying environmental conditions. Thus physical environmental variables may be important selective forces in the regulation of this pathosystem, as spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the environment in nature may result in polymorphism of the pathogen by disruptive selection.

Reducing productivity, outbreak of insects and diseases, and decreasingin physical and cup quality are major problems for Arabica coffee cultivation inmedium altitude. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of altitude onphysical quality in eight genotypes of Arabica coffee. This research was conductedat two locations i.e. Andungsari Research Station-Bondowoso (1250 m asl. ashigh altitude) and Kalibendo Estate-Banyuwangi (700 m asl. as medium altitude).Randomized complete block design was used with three replications. Collecteddata consisted of outturn, weight of 100 beans, shape bean normality, apparentswelling, bulk density before and after roasting. Combined analysis on the physicalquality traits of green bean showed genotype x altitude interactions on weight of100 beans, percentage of normal beans and percentage of empty bean. Altitudesignificantly influenced coffee outturn. Decreasing in altitude from 1.250 m asl.to 700 m asl. caused declining in the outturn as much 32.9%. BP 700A, K 29, K34, K 79, and K 99 were genotypes that stable to produce normal bean and emptybeans at high and medium altidute, while K 8, K 130, and SIG were genotypeswith high normal beans at high altitude but not stable. Genotype x altitude interactiondid not occur for physical quality of other variables of outturn, bulk densitybefore and after roasting, apparent swelling, percentage of round beans,percentage of elephant beans, and percentage of triage beans. Altitude showedsignificant effect on all of physical quality of bean variables.

Abstract Objectives Food from fast-food restaurants (FFR) is typically high in calories, saturated fat, sugars, and sodium, while being low in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Improving choices made when purchasing food at FFR could improve diet and reduce the risk of chronic disease. The RAND Corporation developed performance standards for eating at restaurants that involves limiting calories, saturated fat, trans fat, total sugars, sweetened beverages, sodium and increasing fruit and vegetable intake. This study used a virtual fast-food restaurant to assess the effect of providing participants with a goal of selecting a meal of 700 kcal compared to free-choice on nutrient intake, cost, expected satiety and expected palatability. Methods Fifty-eight students were randomly assigned to the intervention (700 kcal) or control (free-choice) group. Participants wore an immersive virtual reality headset to experience being in a fast-food restaurant. They were asked to rate the palatability and expected satiety of items on the menu before ordering a meal. After they ordered the meal, the participants were asked to rate the palatability and expected satiety of the meal. The time taken to order was also measured. Results In the 700 kcal treatment participants chose a meal that was lower in energy (1300 v 770 kcal; p = 0.001), total fat (55 g v 34 g, p = 0.01), total CHO (151 g v 88 g, p = 0.0006), total sugars (73 g v 22 g, p = 0.02). There was no significant difference for saturated Fat (14.8 g v 8 g, p = 0.08), cholesterol (120 mg v 65 mg, p = 0.1), fiber (7 g v 6 g, p = 0.1), protein (43 g v 27 g, p = 0.06) or sodium (1767 mg v 1125 mg, p = 0.06). The cost of the meal was lower ($9.67 v $6.19; p−0.0003) and there was no difference in the time taken to order (51.7 v 52.9 seconds, p = 0.28), rated palatability of the selected meal (82 mm v 67 mm, p = 0.054). Expected satiety of the restricted meal was lower (100 mm v 79 mm, p = 0.006). Conclusions These preliminary results suggest that individuals who select a meal based on a target of 700 kcal have improved nutrient intakes. In addition, there is a reduction in cost of the meal. The participants rated the meals to be of similar palatability but there was a reduction in expected satiety which may lead to compensatory eating. Funding Sources None.

La prevalencia de DM (en adultos de 20-79 años) en América Central y América del Sur fue de 8,5% en 2019 y se prevé que para 2030 será de 9,5 y de 9,9% para el año 2045.

La fotocatálisis con UV/TiO2usando películas delgadas fue empleada para el tratamiento de agua residual de microbiología. Se empleó un método simple de sedimentación por gravedad sobre sustrato de vidrio para la preparación de las películas. El uso de Na4P2O7, microondas y ultrasonido fue estudiado para la disminución de los granos de TiO2 en las películas. Se estableció que el mejor método para disminuir los agregados resultó de una combinación de Na4P2O7(0.01M) y radiación de microondas (700 W, 20 min). Las películas fueron caracterizadas por métodos microscópicos y espectroscópicos. Se obtuvo la fase anatasa (brecha de energía de 3.2 e.V) y tamaños de grano de 83nm. Los ensayos fotocatalíticos utilizando las películas de TiO2generaron un 99.5% de decoloración, 79% de remoción de COT y una inactivación microbiana total luego de 14 h de tratamiento. No se encontró reactivación microbiana luego de 48 h de finalizado el tratamiento.

AbstractLosses in yield of spring wheat due to infestations of Sitodiplosis mosellana (Géhin) were determined for 700 000 ha of arable land in northeast Saskatchewan, Canada in 1983. The proportion of kernels infested (y) was a power function of the number of wheat-midge larvae (x) (y = 35.3x0.725). One, 2, 3, and 4 larvae per kernel resulted in a level of infestation of 38, 58, 78, and 96%, respectively. There was no significant difference between infestation levels from fields sampled at the heading stage of crop growth and the estimates of infestation levels for these fields at harvest time. Yield of grain (y) was negatively exponential to an increase in level of infestation (x) (ln y = 5.7−0.017x). Infestations of 30, 60, and 90% reduced yields of spring wheat by 40, 65, and 79%, respectively. The average decrease in crop yield in the study area was about 30%, which resulted in estimated losses in total gross revenue of about $30 million.

Final volatiles yield of biomass devolatization at flash heating rate was determined via experiments. Samples of wheat straw and corn stalk powder were dispersed in the feeder and were carried by argon into the laminar entrained flow reactor. Flash devolatization of tiny biomass particles was accomplished in the moderate temperature reactor. Residue was collected and the ash content of it was detected in a thermo-grametric analyzer. Final volatiles yield was calculated using ash trace method. Altogether, 96 experiments (including repeat ones) of different reaction temperature (500, 550, 600, 650 °C), different collecting distance (550, 600, 650, 700 mm away from inlet). Results showed that final volatiles yields of wheat straw and corn stalk are 79%, 85 % separately. High reproducibility of the experiments showed it is a reliable method to determine final volatiles yield of biomass devolatization at flash heating rate. Kinetic parameters for wheat straw and corn stalk were modified as A=1009/s, E=3782kJ/mol and A=596/s, E=3716kJ/mol, respectively.

A source of terahertz (THz) frequency range based on a long Josephson junction is proposed and studied experimentally. The emission is transmitted to open space using a slot antenna located on a single chip with the oscillator and matched to collecting lens. We fabricated and studied several designs of the emitter developed for frequency ranges of 250 – 410 GHz, 330 – 530 GHz and 390 – 700 GHz with continuous frequency tuning. The spectral characteristics of output emission are studied using a THz spectrometer based on the superconducting receiver with spectral resolution of about 0.1 MHz. The antenna characteristics in full range of operation are studied using a cooled silicon bolometer with high sensitivity. Experimental results match to numerical simulations. The research was supported by the Russian Science Foundation (Project No. 17-79-20343). The fabrication of samples was carried out using the Unique Science Unit (USU #352529), developed within the framework of the state task.

Veterinary treatment of livestock with diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), has caused catastrophic declines of Gyps vultures in Asia. This has highlighted a lack of knowledge on the potential impacts of NSAIDs on scavenging birds. Surveys of veterinarians and zoos document the outcomes of the treatment of over 870 scavenging birds from 79 species. As well as diclofenac, carprofen and flunixin were associated with mortality, with deaths observed in 13 and 30% of cases, respectively. Mortality was also found following treatment with ibuprofen and phenylbutazone. NSAID toxicity was reported for raptors, storks, cranes and owls, suggesting that the potential conservation impact of NSAIDs may extend beyond Gyps vultures and could be significant for New World vultures. In contrast, there were no reported mortalities for the NSAID meloxicam, which was administered to over 700 birds from 60 species. The relative safety of meloxicam supports other studies indicating the suitability of this NSAID to replace diclofenac in Asia.

Diabetes mellitus merupakan kelompok penyakit terkait metabolik dengan ciri hiperglikemia kronis yang terjadi karena kelainan sekresi insulin. Prevalensi diabetes diperkirakan meningkat seiring penambahan umur penduduk dari 111,2 juta orang pada umur 65-79 tahun. Angka tersebut diprediksi terus meningkat hingga mencapai 578 juta di tahun 2030 dan 700 juta di tahun 2045. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menganalisis efek pemberian ekstrak kacang tanah (Arachise hypogaea L) terhadap kadar gula darah pada mencit (Mus musculus L). Metode penelitian adalah eksperimental, dengan desain Pre-post test only control group. Sampel yang digunakan darah mencit.Hasil penelitian menunjukan rata-rata jumlah kadar gula darah kelompok tanpa perlakuan yaitu (69,91 mg/dL), aquades (189,60 mg/dL), ekstrak kacang tanah dosis 25% (156,93 mg/dL), ekstrak kacang tanah dosis 50% (88,25 mg/dL) dan ekstrak kacang tanah dosis 75% (80,07 mg/dL). Kesimpulan diperoleh bahwa terdapat efek Pemberian Ekstrak Kacang Tanah (Arachis hypogaea L.) Terhadap Kadar Gula Darah Pada Mencit (Mus musculus L).

Dental caries can cause porous cavities and even broken teeth, necessitating natural teeth extraction and replacement with implants. Fluorapatite, a dental implant material, can be synthesized from snail shells containing 98% calcium carbonate. This study aims to identify the characteristics of fluorapatite and determine the effect of variations in sintering temperature on the synthesis of fluorapatite made from snail shells using the sol-gel method. Variations of sintering temperature used are 700, 900, and 1100 °C. The results showed that fluorapatite synthesized with the sintering temperature of 900 °C demonstrates the highest crystallinity, according to the diffractogram results, there is an 83% presence of the apatite phase at an angle of 31.8126°, with a crystal size of 79 nm and a particle size of 0.5 µm. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis on the sample showed the presence of OH, OH−F, and PO43− functional groups. The sample showed a spongy surface morphology with hexagonal-shaped flowers—a Ca/P molarity ratio 1.67

Abstract. A new real-time Lagrangian diagnostic system for stratosphere-troposphere exchange (STE) developed for Environment Canada (EC) has been delivering daily archived data since 20 July 2010. The STE calculations are performed globally following the Lagrangian approach proposed in Bourqui (2006) using medium-range, high-resolution operational global weather forecasts. Following every weather forecast, trajectories are started from a dense three-dimensional grid covering the globe, and are calculated for six days of the forecast. All trajectories crossing either the dynamical tropopause (±2 PVU) or the 380 K isentrope and having a residence time greater than 12 h are archived, and also used to calculate several diagnostics. This system provides daily global STE forecasts that can be used to guide field campaigns, among other applications. The archived data set offers unique high-resolution information on transport across the tropopause for both extra-tropical hemispheres and the tropics. This will be useful for improving our understanding of STE globally, and as a reference for the evaluation of lower-resolution models. This new data set is evaluated here against measurements taken during a balloon sonde campaign with daily launches from three stations in eastern Canada (Montreal, Egbert, and Walsingham) for the period from 12 July to 4 August 2010. The campaign found an unexpectedly high number of observed stratospheric intrusions: 79% (38%) of the profiles appear to show the presence of stratospheric air below 500 hPa (700 hPa). An objective identification algorithm developed for this study is used to identify layers in the balloon-sonde profiles affected by stratospheric air and to evaluate the Lagrangian STE forecasts. We find that the predictive skill for the overall intrusion depth is excellent for intrusions penetrating down to 300 and 500 hPa, while it becomes negligible for intrusions penetrating below 700 hPa. Nevertheless, the statistical representation of these deep intrusions is reasonable, with an average bias of 24%. Evaluation of the skill at representing the detailed structures of the stratospheric intrusions shows good predictive skill down to 500 hPa, reduced predictive skill between 500 and 700 hPa, and none below. A significant low statistical bias of about 30% is found in the layer between 500 to 700 hPa. However, analysis of missed events at one site, Montreal, shows that 70% of them coincide with candidate clusters of trajectories that pass through Montreal, but that are too dispersed to be detected in the close neighbourhood of the station. This allows us to expect a negligible bias throughout the troposphere in the spatially averaged STE frequency derived from this data set, for example in climatological maps of STE mass fluxes.

Background: Nonrheumatic valvular diseases are common; however, no studies have estimated their global or national burden. As part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017, mortality, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD), degenerative mitral valve disease, and other nonrheumatic valvular diseases were estimated for 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2017. Methods: Vital registration data, epidemiologic survey data, and administrative hospital data were used to estimate disease burden using the Global Burden of Disease Study modeling framework, which ensures comparability across locations. Geospatial statistical methods were used to estimate disease for all countries, because data on nonrheumatic valvular diseases are extremely limited for some regions of the world, such as Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Results accounted for estimated level of disease severity as well as the estimated availability of valve repair or replacement procedures. DALYs and other measures of health-related burden were generated for both sexes and each 5-year age group, location, and year from 1990 to 2017. Results: Globally, CAVD and degenerative mitral valve disease caused 102 700 (95% uncertainty interval [UI], 82 700–107 900) and 35 700 (95% UI, 30 500–42 500) deaths, and 12.6 million (95% UI, 11.4 million–13.8 million) and 18.1 million (95% UI, 17.6 million–18.6 million) prevalent cases existed in 2017, respectively. A total of 2.5 million (95% UI, 2.3 million–2.8 million) DALYs were estimated as caused by nonrheumatic valvular diseases globally, representing 0.10% (95% UI, 0.09%–0.11%) of total lost health from all diseases in 2017. The number of DALYs increased for CAVD and degenerative mitral valve disease between 1990 and 2017 by 101% (95% UI, 79%–117%) and 35% (95% UI, 23%–47%), respectively. There is significant geographic variation in the prevalence, mortality rate, and overall burden of these diseases, with highest age-standardized DALY rates of CAVD estimated for high-income countries. Conclusions: These global and national estimates demonstrate that CAVD and degenerative mitral valve disease are important causes of disease burden among older adults. Efforts to clarify modifiable risk factors and improve access to valve interventions are necessary if progress is to be made toward reducing, and eventually eliminating, the burden of these highly treatable diseases.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) play a major role in various applications, yet maintaining energy efficiency remains a critical challenge due to their limited energy availability. Network lifetime is one of the primary parameters for analyzing the performance of a WSN. This proposed work aims to improve the network lifetime of a WSN by enhancing its energy utilization through the Enhanced Monkey Search Algorithm (E-MSA). The E-MSA provides an optimum solution for this issue by finding a better routing decision by analyzing the available energy on the nodes and the distance between the source and destination. Additionally, a Class Topper Optimization (CTO) algorithm is also included in the work for determining an efficient node to be the cluster head and lead cluster head. In this technique, the data packets are collected by the lead cluster head from the other cluster heads for sending the information in a sequential manner to the base station for reducing data loss. A simulation model is implemented in the NS2 platform with 700 nodes in a 300 × 300 square meter area with 0.5 J of energy to each node for finding the efficiency of the proposed E-MSA with CTO algorithm over the traditional On-Demand Distance Vector (ODV) and Destination-Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV) approaches. The experimental outcome indicates that the proposed work can reach a maximum lifetime of 1579 s which is comparatively better than the ODV and DSDV approaches by 212 and 358 s, respectively. Similarly, a packet delivery ratio of 79% is achieved with a throughput of 0.85 Mbps along with a delay of 0.48 s for the operation of all 700 nodes.

Type-II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a serious threat to human life as till the year 2019, approximately 463 million individuals of age between 20-79 years are suffering with diabetes and it will rise to 700 million by the year 2045. For the testing and diagnosis of diabetes, The WHO and the ADA are using various clinical and laboratory characteristics. Diabetes is a silent killer which cannot be cured, however by changing the lifestyle, losing fat, using low blood sugar medications, and using metformin (biguanide) which helps in reducing insulin resistance, one can control diabetes to an extent. Metformin is widely used medicine to treat obesity. Various short- and long-term problems including premature death occurs in type-II diabetic patients. Due to the late diagnosis and poor medical facilities for type-II diabetes in countries like Africa, they are susceptible to developing diseases that lead to death. This article mainly discusses type-II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the drugs used for its cure. It also gives a green synthesis of one of the diabetes drug done in our lab.

Introduction. The environment of the oral cavity is a complex electrolyte environment with variable pH values, in which metal restorations release metal ions. These ions can induce cell apoptosis through intrinsic and extrinsic pathways. Dental alloys require excellent wear resistance and biocompatibility, which can extend the service life of removable prostheses. Aim. To study the composition of microelements and pH in the oral fluid in the presence of fixed cast prostheses made of cobalt-chromium and nickel-chromium alloys Remanium GM 700 and Remanium CSe of certified delivery and after multiple remelting. Materials and methods. 120 patients aged 25 to 60 took part in our study, including 79 women (65.9%) and 41 men (34.1%), who were divided into 4 groups of 30 people each. In the presented research studied the composition of microelements and pH in the oral fluid in the presence of fixed cast prostheses made of cobalt-chromium and nickel-chromium alloys Remanium GM 700 and Remanium CSe of certified supply and after multiple remelting. Depending on the type and topography of the defect in the dental row, patients were made permanent cast dentures. Results. After 7 days, the pH value shifted to the acidic side in people who were made solid-cast constructions with the specified alloys, and after 3 months it reached a neutral value. The dynamics and degree of expression of the change in pH depend on the timing of the study, the quality of the alloy, and the technological process of manufacturing solid-cast structures of dental prostheses. Conclusions. We determined that the composition of microelements of oral fluid in the presence of solid-cast prostheses changes under the influence of random factors. The studied alloys do not harm the patient's organism and therefore can be used for the production of solid-cast constructions of dental prostheses.

Deep-sea sharks (mainly dogfish) are a significant by-catch of trawls for the deep-water fish orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus). To test whether the livers of these sharks might be a source of commerically valuable squalene and other lipids, 16 sharks of 8 species were collected from Tasmanian waters at depths of 700-1200 m during research cruise S02/88 of FRV Soela. The sharks were Centroscyrnnus crepidater (longnose velvet dogfish), Centroscyrnnus owstoni (Owston's dogfish), Centroscyrnnus coelolepis (Portuguese dogfish), Deania calcea (shovelnose dogfish), Etmopterus baxteri (Baxter's dogfish), Etmopterus sp. nov. (unnamed dwarf dogfish), Dalatias licha (kitefin or seal shark) and Centrophorus squarnosus (leafscale gulper shark). Squalene content, triacylglycerols, diacylglyceryl ethers, total fatty acids, pristane and other lipids were analysed by capillary gas chromatography and thin-layer chromatography-flame ionization detection. The livers contained high levels of squalene (15-69% by weight), except for the liver of C. squarnosus (I%), which had an unusually high amount of diacylglyceryl ethers (79%). Triacylglycerol and diacylglyceryl ether contents in the livers ranged from 1 to 26% and from 7 to 79% by weight respectively. The C19 isoprenoid alkane pristane was a minor constituent in all samples (0.01-0.56% by weight of liver). The three major esterified fatty acids in all samples were palmitic (16:0), oleic [18: 1 (n - 9)] and eicosa-11-enoic [20: 1 (n - 9)] fatty acids. Polyunsaturated fatty acids were minor constituents. These data indicate that shark livers could provide a profitable by-catch from deep-water trawls, but it is unlikely that shark could form the basis for a target fishery due to their susceptibility to overfishing.

The present work deals with the upgrading of conventional Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) technology for treating industrial wastewater. The aim is to obtain total nitrogen removal in a single SBR by implementing short aeration cycles. The operational strategy of conventional SBR consisting of a sequence of five phases (filling, aeration, stirring, settling and withdrawing) is simplified into a four phases sequence (filling, short cycled aeration, settling and withdrawing). This operational sequence has been proven to be adequate for total nitrogen removal from high strength wastewater containing nitrogen (up to 700 mg TKN/L) and organic matter (up to 2,000 mg COD/L). Short-cycled aeration allowed for a more efficient use of the oxygen supply for nitrification and the organic carbon content present in the wastewater for denitrification. The results here reported show that initially the tested technology is feasible and can report significant cuts in operation and maintenance when compared with conventional SBR processes. Total nitrogen removal up to 79% was attained treating the effluent of an UASB process designed for treating the wastewater of a potato starch factory. Total nitrogen removal capacities ranging between 0.2 and 0.65 kg of nitrogen per cubic metre per day are reported.

In the present work, the giant magnetoimpedance effect has been found in Fe73.5Cu1Nb2V1Si13.5B9nanocrystalline ribbons. The optimum annealing temperature for obtaining largest GMI is about 550°C. Fe73.5Cu1Nb2V1Si13.5B9with average grain size of 15 nm after annealing at 550°C for 30 min presents a magnetoimpedance of-74% at 700 kHz under H=90 Oe. The MI effect at high frequency is due to the change of Z via the variation of permeability or the penetration depth under the external field. The positive magnetoimpedance ΔZ/Z is 36% and positive magnetoresistance ΔR/R is 79% at H= 10 Oe and f=5MHz. We observe a huge magnetoreactance ΔX/X of –375% at a very low frequency of 50 kHz, which is a magnetoinduction effect due to the movement of domain wall. The smaller GMI for nanocrystalline Fe73.5Cu1Nb2V1Si13.5B9ribbons annealed above 550°C is mainly connected with the decrease of permeability due to the precipitation of Fe2B phase in ribbons. Our results show that the partial substitution of expensive Nb by cheap V in FeCuNbSiB could be a successful way to prepare the GMI materials with high performance and low cost.

The influence of thermo-mechanical treatment consisting of cold rolling followed by recrystallization annealing on the grain size and mechanical properties of a high-Mn TWIP steel was studied. An Fe-23Mn-0.3C-1.5Al TWIP steel (wt. %) was subjected to extensive cold rolling with a reduction of 80% (true strain of ∼1.6) and then annealed in the temperature interval ranging from 400 to 900 °C during 20 minutes. Recovery processes took place below 500 °C, partial recrystallization was evident at ~550°C and fully recrystallized structure evolved after annealing at 600 °C and higher. The static recovery resulted in a slight decrease in the yield strength from 1400 MPa to 1250 MPa and the ultimate tensile strength from 1540 MPa to 1400 MPa whereas the total elongation of 4% did not changed. The recrystallization development led to a drastic drop of strength and an increase in ductility. The yield strength of 225 MPa, the ultimate tensile strength of 700 MPa and the total elongation of 79% was obtained after annealing at 900 °C. Correspondingly, the grain size increased from 0.2 μm to 6.2 μm with increase in anneal temperature from 550 to 900°C.

ABSTRACT Gaia EDR3 offers greatly improved kinematics for nearby objects, including members of nearby young stellar moving groups (NYMGs). In this study, we aim to identify low-mass NYMG members (spectral types of M0 to mid-L) in Gaia EDR3. We calculated spatio-kinematic membership probabilities by utilizing a Bayesian membership probability calculation scheme developed in our previous study. We evaluated stellar youth primarily based on colour–magnitude diagram positions. Combining spatio-kinematic membership assessment and youth evaluation, we identified ∼2900 low-mass NYMG candidate members, including ∼700 previously claimed members. In the set of ∼2200 new candidate members, ∼550 appear to be young based on NUV brightness. Our pilot spectroscopic study with Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) on the ANU 2.3-m telescope observed 78 candidates, with 79 per cent confirmed as members. Using our new member sample, we estimated an isochronal age of the β Pictoris Moving Group. The mean age (∼10 Myr), which is around half the age of recent estimates, suggests either a truly younger age of the β Pictoris Moving Group or inaccuracies in contemporary isochrones. As the main results of this study, we provide lists of newly confirmed and candidate low-mass NYMG members.

Water quality in river depends on water quality of its tributaries. During the year 2011 nine selected sites downstream under the Vír dam (from 108 to 79 river km) were monitored. For observation were chosen tributaries Besének, Loučka, Nedvědička, Chlebský creek, Hodonínka, Vrtěžířský creek and Tresný creek. At the same time samples from the places above and under the whole monitored section of the river were taken. Basic physicochemical parameters were monitored monthly during the vegetation period. Flow velocity and discharge were assessed three times. Based on the water quality evaluation of, the river Svratka and its tributaries Hodonínka, Vrtěžířský creek and Tresný creek belong to the second quality class, tributaries Besének, Loučka, Nedvědička and Chlebský belong to the third quality class. In the monitored section the retention of phosphorus in annual amount about 2.2 tons were occurance. Annual volume of phosphorus at the end of observed section (upstream the Tišnov town) was nearly 17.5 tons. Annual total balance of nitrogen at the end of monitored section was 700 tons per year and 6000 tons of carbon per year. The major source of these nutrients is the river Loučka.

This single-blind, double-dummy, multicentre study compared oral azithromycin, administered as tablets, 500 mg once daily for 3 days, versus oral pivampicillin, 700 mg twice daily for 10 days, in adults with acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (not needing parenteral antibiotic therapy, hospitalization or oxygen support). Clinical success (cure + improvement) rates were similar for both groups at the end of treatment (day 10; azithromycin, 124 of 133 [93%]; pivampicillin, 79 of 92 [86%]) and at follow-up (day 52; 98 of 126 [78%] versus 66 of 81 [81%]). The treatments produced similar levels of pathogen eradication at the end of treatment (49 of 54 [91%] versus 32 of 37 [86%]). Azithromycin-treated patients had significantly reduced chest discomfort at the end of treatment, and a trend towards improved lung function. The two groups were similar with respect to improvements in other clinical symptoms and patient well-being, and to the incidences of adverse events and treatment discontinuations. This oral azithromycin regime is an effective treatment for acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, similar in efficacy to the longer pivampicillin regime and may offer superior patient compliance.

Feline haematology profiles of patients presented to the University of Bristol Small Animal Hospital from January 2000 to October 2005 were evaluated for thrombocytosis (defined as a platelets count of >700×109/l and confirmed on smear evaluation). Thrombocytosis was found in 79 cats (4.64% of the hospital feline population), with values ranging from 703 to 1895×109/l. Signalment, clinical presentation, concurrence of other haematological abnormalities, diagnoses and outcome were evaluated in 51 cases in which complete medical records were available. Other variables (feline immunodeficiency virus/feline leukaemia virus status, thyroxine level, haemoplasma PCR, toxoplasma antibody titres) were also evaluated. No association was found between the presence of thrombocytosis and breed or gender. Gastrointestinal signs were the most common clinical presentation. Lymphopenia was the most common concurrent haematological abnormality. Based on final diagnosis reached, cats were grouped both according to the DAMNITV classification and according to the body system affected. Amongst the DAMNITV classification, inflammatory/infectious conditions were most commonly associated with thrombocytosis. According to body systems, gastrointestinal involvement was most represented, followed by endocrine cases. No association was found between the severity of thrombocytosis and outcome.

AbstractFecal samples of 177 calves of up to 180 days of age with diarrhea from 70 farms in Austria were examined to obtain information on the occurrence of Cryptosporidium species. Initially, all samples were examined by phase-contrast microscopy. Cryptosporidium-positive samples (55.4%; n = 98) were screened by gp60 PCR, resulting in 68.4% (n = 67) C. parvum–positive samples. The remaining 31 gp60-PCR-negative and the phase-contrast microscopy negative samples (n = 79) were screened by PCR targeting a 700 bp fragment of the 18S rRNA gene. Sequencing of the PCR products revealed the presence of C. parvum (n = 69), C. ryanae (n = 11), and C. bovis (n = 7). The latter two species have never been described in Austria. C. parvum–positive samples were genotyped at the gp60 gene locus, featuring four subtypes (IIaA15G2R1, IIaA21G2R1, IIaA19G2R1, IIaA14G1R1). The most frequently detected subtype IIaA15G2R1 (n = 52) was present in calves from 30 different farms. IIaA14G1R1 (n = 5) occurred on a single farm, subtype IIaA21G2R1 (n = 4) on two farms, and subtype IIaA19G2R1 (n = 4) on three farms. The results confirm the widespread occurrence of zoonotic C. parvum in diarrheic calves.

The clinical efficacy of one or two intravitreal injections of a continued deliverance dexamethasone 700 μg implant in ten patients with persistent macular edema following uncomplicated phacoemulsification was evaluated. Complete ophthalmological examination and spectral domain optical coherence tomography were carried out. Follow-up was at day 7 and months 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12. At baseline mean best corrected visual acuity was 62 Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study Chart letters, which showed statistically significant improvement at each follow-up, except at month 6, to reach 79 letters at month 12 (P=0.018). Prior to treatment mean central foveal thickness was 622 μm, which showed statistically significant improvement at each follow-up to reach a mean value of 282 μm (P=0.012) at month 12. Five patients received a second dexamethasone implant at month 7. Two patients were excluded from the study at months 4 and 8. Intraocular pressure remained stable during the study period with the exception of mild increase in two patients requiring topical therapy. In conclusion there was statistically significant improvement of best corrected visual acuity and mean central foveal thickness with one or two intravitreal dexamethasone implants over 12 months.

From 1996–1998, a longitudinal study on nutritional status during pregnancy was carried out in Purworejo District, Central Java, Indonesia. Dietary intake was assessed in each trimester using six 24-hour recalls, and analyzed cross-sectionally among 493 women. The proportion of women below the Indonesian RDI for vitamin A (700 RE) ranged from 83% in the first trimester to 76% in the third. Regardless of total vitamin A intake, plant sources contributed 64–79% in all three trimesters. The contribution from animal and fortified sources was generally lower throughout pregnancy for those with low education compared to those with high education. Significant risk factors for having a low vitamin A intake (< FAO/WHO basal RDI, 370 RE) in the second and third trimesters were fewer than six years of education, low socio-economic status, a low energy intake, and a low vitamin A intake in the previous trimester. Home gardening and chicken-raising were not positively associated with vitamin A intakes. Given the large percentage of women with inadequate vitamin A intakes, further strategies are needed to increase the vitamin A intake of all pregnant women in this area.

Introduction: Prelabour rupture of membranes is a common obstetrics problem associated with maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The exact cause is not known although various factors are found to be related to this condition. Hence, the objective of this study was to find out the prevalence of prelabour rupture of membranes among pregnant women in a tertiary care centre. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted from 1 November 2021 to 30 November 2022. Ethical approval was taken from the Institutional Review Committee (Reference number: 2078/79/49). A structured proforma was filled out after taking a detailed history from each pregnant woman. Convenience sampling method was used. Point estimate and 99% Confidence Interval were calculated. Results: Among 700 pregnant women, the prevalence of prelabour rupture of membranes was 56 (8%) (5.36-10.64, 99% Confidence Interval). Among them, 40 (71.43%) occurred in the term, while preterm (before 37 weeks) occurred in 16 (28.57%) of all pregnancies. Previous miscarriage occurred in 15 (26.78%) followed by gestational diabetes mellitus 8 (14.28%). Conclusions: The prevalence of prelabour rupture of membranes was found to be lower than other studies done in similar settings.
