Abstract Abstract 195 GEP analysis is a robust method to distinguish low- and high-risk multiple myeloma (MM), pertaining to 85% and 15% of newly diagnosed patients, respectively (Shaughnessy et al., Blood, 2007; 109:2276–84). As developed in TT2 and validated in TT3A and TT3B, we are now examining, similar to previous work in high-risk MM, whether we can define outliers among low-risk MM, i.e., patients not living up to the low-risk prediction model. Toward this end, we scrutinized early relapses in TT3A and TT3B within three years of protocol entry. Using logistic regression analysis, we identified baseline parameters including GEP, en route for distinguishing this high-risk subset among low-risk MM. Also examined was whether a new model could be built within low-risk disease that allowed for the identification of a high-risk subset. Our database was interrogated for patients known to have GEP-defined low-risk in the GEP-70 model. Table 1 summarizes the 3-year events among GEP-70 low-risk subjects per protocol. An optimal cut-point at +0.146 distinguished, among the combined TT2 and TT3 patients, inferior progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) (Figure 1a). Next, we examined outcomes among all TT2 and TT3 patients with GEP data, including those with traditionally-defined high-risk (>=0.66). Here, we were able to distinguish three subgroups with distinctly different PFS and OS (Figure 1b). Utilizing logistic regression analysis, limited to traditionally-defined GEP-70 low-risk MM (=<0.66), three-year progression events during the this period were adversely dominated by the following: GEP-70 scores >0.146 (HR=2.61, p=0.0005), the presence of cytogenetic abnormalities (CA) (HR=1.93, p=0.018), B2M >5.5mg/L (HR=1.95, p=0.04) and LDH >190U/L (HR=1.93, 0.02). These are all reported in Table 2. In conclusion, we have identified, within GEP-70 low-risk patients, a new cut-point. This allows a better categorization of patients having truly low risk disease. Also, above which a prognosis intermediate to the traditional high-risk prognostic group (>=0.66) could be identified. GEP >0.146 dominated a multivariate logistic regression model. Further efforts will be presented on unique genes characterizing this intermediate risk group in relationship to low and high-risk subsets. Table 1. AbstractObjectivePinterest (San Francisco, CA) and Instagram (Menlo Park, CA) are 2 popular photo-sharing social media platforms among young individuals. We assessed differences between Instagram and Pinterest in relaying photographic information regarding Zika virus. Specifically, we investigated whether the percentage of Zika-virus-related photos with Spanish or Portuguese texts embedded therein was higher for Instagram than for Pinterest and whether the contents of Zika-virus-related photos shared on Pinterest were different from those shared on Instagram.MethodsWe retrieved and manually coded 616 Pinterest (key words: “zika” AND “virus”) and 616 Instagram (hashtag: #zikavirus) photos.ResultsAmong the manually coded samples, 47% (290/616) of Pinterest photos and 23% (144/616) of Instagram photos were relevant to Zika virus. Words were embedded in 57% (164/290) of relevant Pinterest photos and all 144 relevant Instagram photos. Among the photos with embedded words, photos in Spanish or Portuguese were more prevalent on Instagram (77/144, 53%) than on Pinterest (14/164, 9%). There were more Zika-virus-related photos on Instagram than on Pinterest pertinent to Zika virus prevention (59/144, 41%, versus 41/290, 14%; P<0.0001), the effects of Zika virus on pregnancy (27/144, 19%, versus 32/290, 11%; P=0.04), and Zika-virus-associated deaths (4/144, 2%, versus 0/290, 0%; P=0.01).ConclusionsPinterest and Instagram are similar platforms for Zika virus prevention communication. Abstract. Black carbon (BC), from incomplete combustion of fuels and biomass, has been considered highly recalcitrant and a substantial sink for carbon dioxide. Recent studies have shown that BC can be degraded. We use soils sampled 100 years apart in a Russian steppe preserve to generate the first whole-profile estimate of BC stocks and turnover in the field. BC stocks (initially 2.5 kg m-2) decreased 25% with cessation of biomass burning. BC turnover in the soil was 293 y (best estimate; range 212–541 y), much faster than inert/passive carbon in soil models. Such results provide a new constraint on theories of soil carbon stabilization. Most importantly, BC cannot be assumed chemically recalcitrant in all soils; other explanations for very old soil carbon are needed.

290 Background: The study evaluated safety and efficacy of CBZ in Japanese patients (pts) with CRPC in real world settings. Methods: This prospective, observational study targeted all CRPC pts receiving CBZ in daily practice between September 2014 and June 2015. Observation period was 1 year after first dose of CBZ given. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) were evaluated for safety by CTCAE 4.0. Overall survival (OS), time to treatment failure (TTF) and prostate specific antigen (PSA) response rate (≥30% PSA decrease) were the efficacy endpoints. Two groups, those given 25mg/m2 of CBZ as initial dose (C25) and those given 20mg/m2 of CBZ (C20), were comparatively analyzed. This study was supported by Sanofi. Results: Of 662 enrolled pts with CRPC treated with CBZ, 660 pts were analyzed. ADRs occurred in 511 pts (77.4%). Most frequent all grade ADRs were neutropenia (49.2%), febrile neutropenia (18.0%) and anemia (14.2%). Median OS and TTF were 319 and 116 days, respectively. Of 540 PSA evaluable pts, 158 (29.3%) achieved PSA response. Populations for post hoc analysis were 159 pts for C25 and 190 pts for C20. Patient characteristics were similar C25 and C20 groups. Statistical significant differences were observed between C25 and C20 groups for OS (Hazzard Ratio [HR] = 0.71) and TTF (HR = 0.78) in favor of C25 group. Initial dose of CBZ remained as the independent prognostic factor for OS and TTF in univariate and multivariate analysis. There was no significant difference for PSA response rate. ≥ Grade 3 ADRs with C25 and C20 occurred in 129 pts (81.1%) and 116 pts (61.1%), respectively. Conclusions: Safety profile of CBZ was generally consistent with clinical studies conducted before approval in Japan. Although there are some limitations of studies done in real world settings, there were significant differences for OS and TTF between C25 and C20. Less ADRs occurred with C20. [Table: see text]

Abstract Human protein S (HPS), a regulator of hemostasis, is a vitamin K- dependent plasma protein with potential clinical utility. We have obtained high-level expression of the cDNA for HPS in two mammalian cell lines. Both cell lines secreted single chain recombinant HPS (rHPS) in serum-free medium as determined by Western blot analysis. The ability of the rHPS from both cell lines to act as a cofactor for human protein C (HPC) was determined; the rHPS secreted from the human 293 cell line had an activity six times that of the rHPS from the AV12–664 Syrian hamster cell line. Furthermore, the relative specific cofactor activity of rHPS from the 293 cell line was actually 2.5-fold higher than that of single-chain human plasma-derived HPS. Essentially all of the rHPS secreted from the 293 cell line exhibited a calcium-dependent elution profile on anion exchange chromatography, whereas only 25% to 35% of the hamster cell-derived rHPS exhibited this profile. However, the calcium-eluted rHPS from the AV12 cell line had a high specific cofactor activity, equivalent to that of the 293-derived rHPS. A NaCl- elutable rHPS fraction (calcium nondependent) was isolated from the recombinant AV12–664 cell line, further purified, and found to have reduced activity, only 40% that of the calcium-dependent rHPS. The only observable difference in the calcium-dependent and nondependent rHPS molecules was in the content of gamma-carboxyglutamic acid (Gla); the calcium-dependent material contained approximately 10 mol Gla/mol protein whereas the calcium-nondependent material contained only approximately 8 mol Gla/mol of protein. In addition, the calcium- nondependent rHPS had reduced ability to interact with phospholipid vesicles as evidenced by an eightfold increase in the apparent kd. Our data demonstrate the isolation of rHPS with high specific activity, and show that a reduction in as few as two Gla residues dramatically decreases its functional cofactor activity for HPC, due to a reduction in ability to interact with the phospholipid bilayer.

C-terminal CNBr peptides of the three polypeptide chains of C4 were obtained and sequenced. These results supplement previously obtained data, notably the protein sequence derived from cDNA sequencing of pro-C4 (Belt KT, Carroll MC & Porter RR (1984) Cell36, 907–914) and the N-terminal sequences of the three polypeptides (Gigli I, von Zabern I & Porter RR (1977) Biochem. J.165, 439–446), to define the complete primary structure of the plasma form of C4. The β (656 residues), α (748 residues), and γ (291 residues) chains are found in positions 1–656, 661–1408, and 1435–1725 in the pro-C4 molecule.

This thesis explores how the spread of evolutionary theory has affected the beliefs of contemporary Muslims regarding human identity, capacity and destiny. Incorporating traditional and modern notions, Muslim responses to the crisis of the religious imagination presented by evolutionary ideas fall into at least four different modes of engagement. During the 19th century encounter with “the West” Muslims addressed the issue largely by juxtaposing the data of scientific discovery with those of revelation, a method still dominant today in the guises of creationism and modernisation. Another approach, whose impact on Islamic thought reaches from India to West Africa, emerges under the influence of Henri Bergson’s optimistic evolutionary philosophy and inclines towards a dynamic view of human personhood. Diametrically opposed to this is a perennialist Traditionalism marked by the cultural pessimism of post-1918 Europe. Strongly influenced by neo-Platonic Sufism, it represents the most rigorous rejection possible of evolutionary ideas. The last style of engagement arises from various late-20th Century attempts to renew science itself by “Islamizing” it. The thesis evaluates the content, influence and success of these four modes, asking how Muslims might now proceed to address the profound challenges which evolutionary theory poses to the effective reconstruction of religious thought.

This research seeks to understand the process of technological development in the UK and the specific role of a ‘rhetoric of Americanisation’ in that process. The concept of a ‘rhetoric of Americanisation’ will be developed throughout the thesis through a study into the computer industry in the UK in the post-war period. Specifically, the thesis discusses the threat of America, or how actors in the network of innovation within the British computer industry perceived it as a threat and the effect that this perception had on actors operating in the networks of construction in the British computer industry. However, the reaction to this threat was not a simple one. Rather this story is marked by sectional interests and technopolitical machination attempting to capture this rhetoric of ‘threat’ and ‘falling behind’. In this thesis the concept of ‘threat’ and ‘falling behind’, or more simply the ‘rhetoric of Americanisation’, will be explored in detail and the effect this had on the development of the British computer industry. What form did the process of capture and modification by sectional interests within government and industry take and what impact did this have on the British computer industry? In answering these questions, the thesis will first develop a concept of a British culture of computing which acts as the surface of emergence for various ideologies of innovation within the social networks that made up the computer industry in the UK. In developing this understanding of a culture of computing, the fundamental distinction between the US and UK culture of computing will be explored. This in turn allows us to develop a concept of how Americanisation emerged as rhetorical construct. With the influence of a ‘rhetoric of Americanisation’, the culture of computing in the UK began to change and the process through which government and industry interacted in the development of computing technologies also began to change. In this second half of the thesis a more nuanced and complete view of the nature of innovation in computing in the UK in the sixties will be developed. This will be achieved through an understanding of the networks of interaction between government and industry and how these networks were reconfigured through a ‘rhetoric of Americanisation’. As a result of this, the thesis will arrive at a more complete view of change and development within the British computer industry and how interaction with government influences that change.

A major problem of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is their long term durability under cyclic operation, for example during start-up and shutdown, where cracking can occur. The objective of this project is to understand these mechanisms of cyclic degradation for micro-tubular SOFC, then to set-up experiments to measure the degradation in terms of the drop in electrochemical performance and subsequently confirming the theories by dilatometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In conclusion, the methods and conditions for minimizing degradation in SOFC have been put forward. First, a theory of degradation based micro-crack propagation due to severe expansion and direct oxidation of the Ni anode were propounded. Several experiments were designed to illustrate the degradation phenomena. The first was isothermal (steady state) ageing, which was performed to provide a benchmark of degradation for easy comparison with degradation under transient conditions (i.e. thermal, redox and load cycling). During this operation, sintering was found to dominate the degradation mechanism, causing irreversible deformation and decreasing the power output without obvious micro-cracking taking place. With the bench mark for steady state degradation established, thermal cycling was performed by rapidly alternating between peak temperature and 200⁰C. This was found to have a marginal effect on the electrochemical performance and no microcracking was observed. However, thermal cycling with a temperature gradient imposed across the tubes was found to cause electro-chemical performance decrease and micro-cracking and de-laminations were observed. Thirdly, redox cycling was performed by changing the fuel flow between 20mL/min and no-flow. This was essential to deprive the anode of fuel in order to allow for oxidation of the Ni anode to occur. Redox cycling was found to have an adverse effect on the electro-chemical performance of micro-tubes. Severe micro-cracking and delaminations were observed. Lastly, thermal and electrical shock test were performed. The critical fracture temperature (ΔTC) was established by thermal shock at approximately 180⁰C. Under electrical shock testing, the tubes were found to fail after 13 – 15 electrical shock cycles, depending on the shock temperature. In conclusion, theories of micro-tubular SOFC cycling degradation have been proposed for thermal cycling, redox cycling and isothermal ageing and several experiments have provided confirmation.

Анотація:
Les textiles fonctionnels sont présents dans tous les domaines d'application. Leur essor fulgurant provient de leur grande diversité et de leurs nombreuses qualités. Dans notre étude, deux applications particulières ont retenu notre attention: les fibres anti-taches et les fibres antibactériennes. La première propriété est affectée au poly( éthylène téréphtalate) et la seconde est afIectée au polyamide 6,6. Cette étude est consacrée à la mise au point de procédures de grefIage par voie chimique radicalaire. Nous sommes parvenu à fixer un mélange d'acrylates fluoré/non fluoré sur les fibres de polyester et des acrylates comportant des groupements d'ammonium quaternaire sur les tricots de nylon 6,6. Nous avons essayé d'optimiser les différents paramètres expérimentaux pour donner aux textiles les caractéristiques souhaitées. Nous sommes parvenus à des taux de greffage notables. Suite au greffage, les textiles modifiés ont été caractérisés par difIérentes techniques. Certaines techniques ont permis de confirmer la présence de greffons (analyse élémentaire, ATG, IR). D'autres ont été utilisées pour vérifier la présence des propriétés recherchées. Nous avons caractérisé thermodynamiquement les surfàces des fibres de PET par l'intermédiaire d'une technique de tensiométrie. Cette technique nous a permis de mettre en évidence une amélioration de la propriété d'hydrofugation et d'oléofugation des fibres de poly(éthylène téréphtalate ). Les effets bactériostatiques du polyamide 6,6 sur les microorganismes ont été évalués par une méthode adaptée du protocole de la recherche du pouvoir inhibiteur intrinsèque selon le Journal Officiel du 03/07/72 et de la norme XP G 39-010 de caractérisation et mesure de l'activité antibactérienne. Les essais ont démontré l'effi͏̈cacité des textiles traités vis-à-vis du Staphylococcus aureus. L'examen de la croissance de bactéries à la surface même du textile a permis de noter l' échanti lion traité comme étant sans croissance de bactéries.

El libro consta de seis capítulos, los cuales han sido desarrollados por investigadores del Centro de Estudios Económicos Regionales (CEER). Cada uno de ellos profundiza en factores asociados con el crecimiento económico, especialmente los relacionados con el capital humano, visto desde sus componentes fundamentales: la educación y la salud. Si se define el PIB urbano como el agregado de la producción del sector industrial, de servicios y el financiero, se observa que seis departamentos concentran cerca del 80% de dicha producción. Para el estudio de la economía de las ciudades se ha seleccionado a Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Bucaramanga, Barranquilla y Cartagena, capitales de esos departamentos, que representan el 72% de la población residente en las capitales departamentales y 42% de la población residente en las cabeceras urbanas del país. Estas capitales, junto con sus áreas metropolitanas, concentran la mayor parte del capital humano del país y son, también, en la mayoría de los casos, el área urbana más representativa de la región a la cual pertenecen.

Introdução: Considerando a importância da avaliação da glicosúria e da glicemia na colaboração ao diagnóstico e encadeamento de diferentes doenças, torna-se pertinente analisar a concordância entre a presença de glicosúria e os níveis de glicemia, a fim de verificar a proporção de alterações simultâneas dos resultados laboratoriais e proporcionar maior tranquilidade no controle de situações de aparente desacordo entre a glicosúria e a glicemia Objetivo: Avaliar a concordância entre a glicemia de jejum e a glicosúria em pacientes atendidos em um laboratório da Paraíba na cidade de Campina Grande. Material e métodos: Trata-se de uma pesquisa de caráter descritivo, retrospectivo, documental, exploratório, realizado em um laboratório de análises clínicas referência no atendimento a diabéticos na cidade de Campina Grande, Paraíba. Para a pesquisa, foi utilizado o sistema de dados do próprio laboratório, sem possibilidade de identificação individual, onde foram extraídas informações relacionadas a presença e alterações da glicosúria, hiperglicemia e dosagens elevadas de glicosúria e hiperglicemia nos mesmos laudos durante o períodos de Janeiro a Dezembro de 2020. Para o tratamento estatístico, foi utilizado o programa Microsoft Office Excel 2016. Resultados: A amostra foi composta por 642 laudos. Dentre os casos, 217 (33,80%) não apresentaram alteração de glicemia e glicosúria, estando dentro dos valores de referência considerados normais, 272 (42,36%) apresentaram glicosúria alterada e 340 (52,95%) apresentaram hiperglicemia. Ao verificar a concordância entre a glicemia e a glicosúria, 185 (29%) laudos apresentaram glicemia normal e glicosúria positiva. Considerando apenas os pacientes com hiperglicemia, 66%não apresentaram glicosúria e obtiveram média de glicemia de 118mg/dL (±34). Dentre os 272 laudos com alteração na glicosúria, 93 (34,20%) apresentaram glicemia menor do que 160 mg/dL, obtendo média de glicemia de 125mg/dL. Conclusão: A glicosúria se fez mais presente em pacientes cujos níveis de glicemia de jejum estavam aumentados, pois mesmo não havendo uma correlação linear entre os níveis da glicemia e glicosúria, quando a concentração de glicose ultrapassa o valor de 160mg/dL, a capacidade de reabsorção renal é excedida e a glicose acaba por ser excretada na urina. Todavia, outras condições podem determinar glicosúria como dietas ricas em glicose antes da coleta de urina e uso de glicose parenteral.

Many students struggle with mathematics in late elementary school, particularly on the topic of fractions. In a best evidence syntheses of research on increasing achievement in elementary school mathematics, Pelligrini et al. (2018) highlighted tutoring as a way to help students. Online tutoring is attractive because costs may be lower and logistics easier than with face-to-face tutoring. Cignition developed an approach that combines online 1:1 tutoring with a fractions game, called FogStone Isle. The game provides students with additional learning opportunities and provides tutors with information that they can use to plan tutoring sessions. A randomized controlled trial investigated the research question: Do students who participate in online tutoring and a related mathematical game learn more about fractions than students who only have access to the game? Participants were 144 students from four schools, all serving low-income students with low prior mathematics achievement. In the Treatment condition, students received 20-25 minute tutoring sessions twice per week for an average of 18 sessions and also played the FogStone Isle game. In the Control condition, students had access to the game, but did not play it often. Control students did not receive tutoring. Students were randomly assigned to condition after being matched on pre-test scores. The same diagnostic assessment was used as a pre-test and as a post-test. The planned analysis looked for differences in gain scores ( post-test minus pre-test scores) between conditions. We conducted a t-test on the aggregate gain scores, comparing conditions; the results were statistically significant (t = 4.0545, df = 132.66, p-value < .001). To determine an effect size, we treated each site as a study in a meta-analysis. Using gain scores, the effect size was g=+.66. A more sophisticated treatment of the pooled standard deviation resulted in a corrected effect size of g=.46 with a 95% confidence interval of [+.23,+.70]. Students who received online tutoring and played the related Fog Stone Isle game learned more; our research found the approach to be efficacious. The Pelligrini et al. (2018) meta-analysis of elementary math tutoring programs found g = .26 and was based largely on face-to-face tutoring studies. Thus, this study compares favorably to prior research on face-to-face mathematics tutoring with elementary students. Limitations are discussed; in particular, this is an initial study of an intervention under development. Effects could increase or decrease as development continues and the program scales. Although this study was planned long before the current pandemic, results are particularly timely now that many students are at home under shelter-in-place orders due to COVID-19. The approach taken here is feasible for students at home, with tutors supporting them from a distance. It is also feasible in many other situations where equity could be addressed directly by supporting students via online tutors.

This report maps the African landscape of Open Science – with a focus on Open Data as a sub-set of Open Science. Data to inform the landscape study were collected through a variety of methods, including surveys, desk research, engagement with a community of practice, networking with stakeholders, participation in conferences, case study presentations, and workshops hosted. Although the majority of African countries (35 of 54) demonstrates commitment to science through its investment in research and development (R&D), academies of science, ministries of science and technology, policies, recognition of research, and participation in the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI), the following countries demonstrate the highest commitment and political willingness to invest in science: Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. In addition to existing policies in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), the following countries have made progress towards Open Data policies: Botswana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, South Africa and Uganda. Only two African countries (Kenya and South Africa) at this stage contribute 0.8% of its GDP (Gross Domestic Product) to R&D (Research and Development), which is the closest to the AU’s (African Union’s) suggested 1%. Countries such as Lesotho and Madagascar ranked as 0%, while the R&D expenditure for 24 African countries is unknown. In addition to this, science globally has become fully dependent on stable ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) infrastructure, which includes connectivity/bandwidth, high performance computing facilities and data services. This is especially applicable since countries globally are finding themselves in the midst of the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR), which is not only “about” data, but which “is” data. According to an article1 by Alan Marcus (2015) (Senior Director, Head of Information Technology and Telecommunications Industries, World Economic Forum), “At its core, data represents a post-industrial opportunity. Its uses have unprecedented complexity, velocity and global reach. As digital communications become ubiquitous, data will rule in a world where nearly everyone and everything is connected in real time. That will require a highly reliable, secure and available infrastructure at its core, and innovation at the edge.” Every industry is affected as part of this revolution – also science. An important component of the digital transformation is “trust” – people must be able to trust that governments and all other industries (including the science sector), adequately handle and protect their data. This requires accountability on a global level, and digital industries must embrace the change and go for a higher standard of protection. “This will reassure consumers and citizens, benefitting the whole digital economy”, says Marcus. A stable and secure information and communication technologies (ICT) infrastructure – currently provided by the National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) – is key to advance collaboration in science. The AfricaConnect2 project (AfricaConnect (2012–2014) and AfricaConnect2 (2016–2018)) through establishing connectivity between National Research and Education Networks (NRENs), is planning to roll out AfricaConnect3 by the end of 2019. The concern however is that selected African governments (with the exception of a few countries such as South Africa, Mozambique, Ethiopia and others) have low awareness of the impact the Internet has today on all societal levels, how much ICT (and the 4th Industrial Revolution) have affected research, and the added value an NREN can bring to higher education and research in addressing the respective needs, which is far more complex than simply providing connectivity. Apart from more commitment and investment in R&D, African governments – to become and remain part of the 4th Industrial Revolution – have no option other than to acknowledge and commit to the role NRENs play in advancing science towards addressing the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals). For successful collaboration and direction, it is fundamental that policies within one country are aligned with one another. Alignment on continental level is crucial for the future Pan-African African Open Science Platform to be successful. Both the HIPSSA ((Harmonization of ICT Policies in Sub-Saharan Africa)3 project and WATRA (the West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Assembly)4, have made progress towards the regulation of the telecom sector, and in particular of bottlenecks which curb the development of competition among ISPs. A study under HIPSSA identified potential bottlenecks in access at an affordable price to the international capacity of submarine cables and suggested means and tools used by regulators to remedy them. Work on the recommended measures and making them operational continues in collaboration with WATRA. In addition to sufficient bandwidth and connectivity, high-performance computing facilities and services in support of data sharing are also required. The South African National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System5 (NICIS) has made great progress in planning and setting up a cyberinfrastructure ecosystem in support of collaborative science and data sharing. The regional Southern African Development Community6 (SADC) Cyber-infrastructure Framework provides a valuable roadmap towards high-speed Internet, developing human capacity and skills in ICT technologies, high- performance computing and more. The following countries have been identified as having high-performance computing facilities, some as a result of the Square Kilometre Array7 (SKA) partnership: Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, Tunisia, and Zambia. More and more NRENs – especially the Level 6 NRENs 8 (Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, and recently Zambia) – are exploring offering additional services; also in support of data sharing and transfer. The following NRENs already allow for running data-intensive applications and sharing of high-end computing assets, bio-modelling and computation on high-performance/ supercomputers: KENET (Kenya), TENET (South Africa), RENU (Uganda), ZAMREN (Zambia), EUN (Egypt) and ARN (Algeria). Fifteen higher education training institutions from eight African countries (Botswana, Benin, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan, and Tanzania) have been identified as offering formal courses on data science. In addition to formal degrees, a number of international short courses have been developed and free international online courses are also available as an option to build capacity and integrate as part of curricula. The small number of higher education or research intensive institutions offering data science is however insufficient, and there is a desperate need for more training in data science. The CODATA-RDA Schools of Research Data Science aim at addressing the continental need for foundational data skills across all disciplines, along with training conducted by The Carpentries 9 programme (specifically Data Carpentry 10 ). Thus far, CODATA-RDA schools in collaboration with AOSP, integrating content from Data Carpentry, were presented in Rwanda (in 2018), and during17-29 June 2019, in Ethiopia. Awareness regarding Open Science (including Open Data) is evident through the 12 Open Science-related Open Access/Open Data/Open Science declarations and agreements endorsed or signed by African governments; 200 Open Access journals from Africa registered on the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ); 174 Open Access institutional research repositories registered on openDOAR (Directory of Open Access Repositories); 33 Open Access/Open Science policies registered on ROARMAP (Registry of Open Access Repository Mandates and Policies); 24 data repositories registered with the Registry of Data Repositories (re3data.org) (although the pilot project identified 66 research data repositories); and one data repository assigned the CoreTrustSeal. Although this is a start, far more needs to be done to align African data curation and research practices with global standards. Funding to conduct research remains a challenge. African researchers mostly fund their own research, and there are little incentives for them to make their research and accompanying data sets openly accessible. Funding and peer recognition, along with an enabling research environment conducive for research, are regarded as major incentives. The landscape report concludes with a number of concerns towards sharing research data openly, as well as challenges in terms of Open Data policy, ICT infrastructure supportive of data sharing, capacity building, lack of skills, and the need for incentives. Although great progress has been made in terms of Open Science and Open Data practices, more awareness needs to be created and further advocacy efforts are required for buy-in from African governments. A federated African Open Science Platform (AOSP) will not only encourage more collaboration among researchers in addressing the SDGs, but it will also benefit the many stakeholders identified as part of the pilot phase. The time is now, for governments in Africa, to acknowledge the important role of science in general, but specifically Open Science and Open Data, through developing and aligning the relevant policies, investing in an ICT infrastructure conducive for data sharing through committing funding to making NRENs financially sustainable, incentivising open research practices by scientists, and creating opportunities for more scientists and stakeholders across all disciplines to be trained in data management.
