In practical engineering, the joints or fissures with similar characteristics are commonly found in natural rocks, they decrease the mechanics properties of the rock mass and also can be seen as a source of initiation of new discontinuities. The previous studies (experimental or numerical) has promoted the understanding of coalescence patterns or failure process obtained from brittle specimens which contain single, two or three fissures. However, the failure characteristics of multi-fissure specimens has not been studied comprehensively. In this paper, the crack coalescence pattern and failure mode of the rock-like materials with multi-fissures have been explored. Based on the experiment results, under unaxial compression, we found that the coalescence modes between fissures can be generally classified into three categories: T/S/M pattern. Moreover, due to the difference of inclination angle and fissure numbers, the specimens present different failure mode. Careful examination all of specimens, the failure mode can be classified into 4 categories: Mix failure model(shear+splitting), Shear failure, Stepped path, Intact failure.

In this paper, molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) nanoparticles were synthesized by rapid-microwave method using ammonium heptamolybdate (AHM) as a precursor in ethylene glycol (EG) solution with concentrated HNO3. This reaction was carried out in a short period of 30 min and the nanoparticles were then heat treated at 600°C. The structures ofthe products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to record the morphology and nanoparticle size of MoO3. The Raman spectrum of MoO3 displays three well-defined peaks located at 989.2, 816.0 and 665.3 cm-1 which are the fingerprints of the orthorhombicα-MoO3 crystalline phase.

The performance and wear mechanisms of one type of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) cutting tool with two different cutting edge micro geometries (marked as PCBN 169T and PCBN 169S) have been investigated in this paper. Interrupted turning of round GCr15 steel has been selected as the test method. The experimental results indicate that PCBN 169S has a greater thermal wear resistance than PCBN 169T at high cutting speeds. It is believed that edge preparation can shorten or eliminate the initiative wearing stage, improve the impact resistance, reduce the occurrence of chipping or dilapidation, and extend tool life. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to evaluate wear mechanisms of PCBN tools. Our results show that the dominant wear mechanisms for PCBN 169T and PCBN 169S are mechanical and chemical wear.

In this paper, a micro-arc oxidation (MAO) approach is introduced for “in-situ” preparing TiO2 composite layer upon the surface of titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) substrate. The surface morphologies, chemical compositions, crystal microstructure and photocatalytic properties of the layers were investigated by using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electro-chemical workstation and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The experimental results revealed that photocatalytic performance of the TiO2 composite layers was much higher than that of the pure TiO2 layer and also exhibited absorption under the visible light irradiation.

Gene effects on the yield performance were compared among promising semidwarf genes, namely, novel gene d60, representative gene sd1 with different two source IR8 and Jukkoku, and double dwarf combinations of d60 with each sd1 allele, in a Koshihikari background. Compared with the culm length of variety Koshihikari (mean, 88.8 cm), that of the semidwarf or double dwarf lines carrying Jukkoku_sd1, IR8_sd1, d60, Jukkoku_sd1 plus d60, or IR8_sd1 plus d60 was shortened to 71.8 cm, 68.5 cm, 65.7 cm, 48.6 cm, and 50.3 cm, respectively. Compared with the yield of Koshihikari (mean, 665.3 g/m2), that of the line carrying Jukkoku_sd1 allele showed the highest value (772.6 g/m2, 16.1% higher than Koshihikari), while that of IR8_sd1, d60 and IR8_sd1 plus d60, was slightly decreased by 7.1%, 5.5%, and 9.7% respectively. The line carrying Jukkoku_sd1 also showed the highest value in number of panicles and florets/panicle, 16.2% and 11.1% higher than in Koshihikari, respectively, and these effects were responsible for the increases in yield. The 1000-grain weight was equivalent among all genetic lines. Except for the semidwarf line carrying Jukkoku_sd1, semidwarf line carrying d60 was equivalent to line carrying IR8_sd1in the yield of unpolished rice, and yield components such as panicle length, panicle number, floret number /panicle. Therefore, the semidwarfing gene d60 is one of the best possible choices in practical breeding.

Aim: to elucidate predictors of high level of basal triglycerides (TG) in blood of children of persons with early (onset: men ≤55, women ≤60 years) ischemic heart disease (EIHD).Materials and methods. We examined 316 families: patients (probands) (n=295; 77.9 % after MI) with EIHD, their spouses (n=219; 83.1 % women) and native children of probands (n=413; 55.7 % men) aged 5–38 years. In children aged 5–17 and 18–38 years proband’s spouse was mother in 88 and 77 % of cases, respectively. Hypertriglyceridemia in children (HTG) was defined in persons aged 5–17 years as ≥90 percentile (Lipid Research Clinics), ≥18 years – ≥1.7 mmol / l or HTG drug treatment. Predictors of HTG were selected by binary logistical regression with adjustment for age, sex and drugs.Results. HTG was found in 31 / 158 children aged 5–17 years. Its independent predictors were systolic arterial pressure (odds ratio [OR] of top [>108] vs. two bottom [≤108 mm Hg] tertiles 3.85, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.38–10.7, р=0.010), heart rate (HR, OR of top [>78] vs. two bottom [≤78 bpm] tertiles 2.94, 95 % CI 1.20–7.23, р=0.019), and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL–C, OR 0.35, 95 % CI 0.13–0.94; р=0.038) of their children; HR (OR of top [>72] vs. two bottom [≤72 bpm] tertiles 3.56, 95 % CI 1.38–9.11, р=0.008), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (OR 2.49, 95 % CI 1.12–5.52, p=0.025]), and type 2 diabetes (OR 25.9, 95 % CI 1.01–665.3; p=0.049) of the parent – proband’s consort. HTG was found in 35 / 255 children aged 18–38 years and was associated with own age (OR 1.10, 95 % CI 1.02–1.19, р=0.012) and male sex (OR 6.21, 95 % CI 2.45–15.8; р=0.000). HTG was independently associated with body mass index (OR top [>25.4] vs. two bottom [≤25.4 kg / m2] tertiles 4.94, 95 % CI 2.13–11.4, р=0.000); basal glycemia (OR top [5.1] vs. two bottom [≤5.1 mmol / l] tertiles 2.52, 95 % CI 1.17–5.43, р=0.019); HDL–C (OR 0.17, CI 0.04–0.81, 0.027); alcohol consumption (OR consuming more than once vs. once a week and less 2.27, 95 % CI 1.02–5.02, p=0.044) of these children; HDL–C (OR 0.19, 95 CI 0.04–0.94; p=0.041) of the proband-parent.Conclusions. HTG in children aged 5–38 years with parental early IHD was independently associated mainly with own characteristics, forming components of metabolic syndrome. Attention should be paid to the dominance of maternal transmission in children and adolescents (age group 5–17 years).

Introduction: Many safety accidents in various industries are caused by poor safety culture of employees. Therefore, safety training can play an essential role in reducing workplace accidents and any damage to students. According to the importance of university workshops, the purpose of this study was to identify and assess the safety and health risks of the foundry and machinery workshops of Iran University of Science and Technology. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted at Iran University of Science and Technology in the 2018. After identifying risks, the Fuzzy Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA) technique was used to identify and assess the RPN number of risks which is calculated by multiplying of Severity x Occurrence x Detection and all risks were prioritized based on the calculated RPNs. Finally, corrective actions are presented to reduce injury risks. Results: The RPN range of 10 potential hazards in the machinery workshop calculated from 5.8 to 230.3, and the RPN range of 19 potential hazards in the foundry workshop calculated from 1.3 to 665.3. The danger of " throwing lathe chuck wrench " with RPN=230/33 in machinery workshop and "melt throwing due to air retention in metal parts " with RPN=665/33 in foundry workshop received the top priorities. Conclusion: Based on the calculated results, it is expected that the implementation of proposed corrective actions and the development of educational programs to promote students' safety culture can reduce the level of existing risks significantly.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has become a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in China, with tobacco smoke, air pollution, and occupational biohazards being the major risk factors. Objectives: The REACH trial is a multicenter, prospective, randomized controlled trial undertaken in China to assess the safety and effectiveness of the Spiration® Valve System (SVS) compared to standard medical care in COPD patients with severe emphysema. Methods: Patients with severe airflow obstruction, hyperinflation, and severe dyspnea with interlobar fissure integrity were evaluated for enrollment. A total of 107 subjects were randomized in a 2: 1 allocation ratio to either the treatment group (SVS valves and medical management) or the control group (medical management alone). Results: The 3-month primary endpoint showed statistically significant improvement in forced expiratory volume in 1 s in the treatment group compared to the control group (0.104 ± 0.18 vs. 0.003 ± 0.15 L, p = 0.001), with the difference being durable through 6 months. Statistically significant target lobe volume reduction was achieved at 3 months (mean change 684.4 ± 686.7 mL) and through 6 months (757.0 ± 665.3 mL). Exercise function and quality of life measures improved in the treatment group, but showed a deterioration in the control group. The serious adverse event (SAE) rate was 33% in the treatment group and 24.2% in the control group. The predominance of SAEs were acute exacerbations of COPD in both groups. There was 1 death in the control group and no deaths in the treatment group. Conclusion: The SVS represents a novel approach for the treatment of severe emphysema with a clinically acceptable risk-benefit profile.
