Abstract The IRIS trial compared interferon alfa + cytarabine (IFN+Ara-C) and imatinib (IM) in patients (pts) with newly diagnosed CML-CP. Among 553 pts randomized to receive 400 mg IM, 157 (28%) discontinued for reasons which included AEs or deaths unrelated to CML and treatment (6%) and unsatisfactory therapeutic effect (11%). Only 2.4% discontinued due to drug-related AEs. The average daily dose was 389±71 mg, suggesting that no major dose modifications were required due to toxicity. In pts still on IM, the average doses was 382±50 mg. Average duration of exposure is 50 mos (median 60 mos). Table 1 summarizes the most frequently reported non-hematologic AEs (regardless of relationship to study drug) in pts who started IM therapy and those who were still on IM at 2 and 4 years (n=456 and 409 respectively). After 4 years, 8% of pts experienced an SAE, compared with 14%, 12%, 7.5%, and 9% during year one through four of therapy. Overall, only 6% of pts had SAEs considered related to study drug (1.5% pts after 4 years of IM). Congestive heart failure/cardiac dysfunction (incl. pulmonary edemas) were reported for 3% of pts (<1% grade 3/4) and pleural effusion in 1% (<1% grade 3/4). Despite much shorter average exposure (12 mos), similar % of these AEs were noted for IFN+Ara-C. Although it should be considered that pts more likely to experience grade 3/4 events may have discontinued from the study prematurely, the 5-year data with IM in pts with newly diagnosed CML-CP show declining frequencies of AEs and SAEs over time. Occurrence of SAEs and laboratory abnormalities with long-term follow-up was rare. No unexpected long-term side effects were noted. These results confirm the IM tolerability and safety profile for durations exceeding 4 years.

Context: Though previous research has focused on examining the effects of concussion history using a dual-task paradigm, the influence of factors like symptoms (unrelated to concussion), gender, and type of sport on gait in college athletes is unknown. Objective: To examine the effect of concussion history, symptoms, gender, and type of sport (noncontact/limited contact/contact) individually on gait among college athletes. Design: Exploratory cross-sectional study. Setting: Laboratory. Participants: In total, 98 varsity athletes (age, 18.3 [1.0] y; height, 1.79 [0.11] m; mass, 77.5 [19.2] kg; 27 with concussion history, 58 reported at least one symptom, 44 females; 8 played noncontact sports and 71 played contact sports) walked under single- and dual-task (walking while counting backward by 7) conditions. Interventions: Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures: Dual-task cost (DTC; % difference between single task and dual task) of gait speed, cadence, step length and width, percentage of swing and double-support phases, symptom score, and total symptom severity score. Independent samples t tests and 1-way analysis of variance were conducted (α value = .05). Results: Self-reported concussion history resulted in no significant differences (P > .05). Those who reported symptoms at testing time showed significantly greater DTC of step length (mean difference [MD], 2.7%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.3% to 5.1%; P = .012), % of swing phase (MD, 1.0%; 95% CI, −0.2 to 2.1%; P = .042), and % of double-support phase (MD, 3.9%; 95% CI, 0.2% to 7.8%; P = .019). Females demonstrated significantly higher DTC of gait speed (MD, 5.3%; 95% CI, 1.3% to 9.3%; P = .005), cadence (MD, 4.0%; 95% CI, 1.4% to 6.5%; P = .002), % of swing phase (MD, 1.2%; 95% CI, 0.1% to 2.3%; P = .019), and % of double-support phase (MD, 4.1%; 95% CI, 0.4% to 7.9%; P = .018). Noncontact sports athletes had significantly greater step width DTC than contact sports athletes (MD, 14.2%; 95% CI, 0.9% to 27.6%; P = .032). Conclusions: Reporting symptoms at testing time may influence gait under dual-task conditions. Additionally, female athletes showed more gait changes during a dual task. Sports medicine professionals should be aware that these variables, while unrelated to injury, may affect an athlete’s gait upon analysis.

SynopsisWe found diurnal weight gain to be abnormal among 28 institutionalized chronically psychotic patients. They were weighed daily for 15 days at 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. We normalized the diurnal weight gain (NDWG) as a percentage by subtracting the 7 a.m. weight from the 4 p.m. weight, multiplying the difference by 100, and then dividing the result by the 7 a.m. weight. NDWG was 2·8 ± 1·3% for the 28 study patients, 0·631 ±0·405% for 16 acutely psychotic controls, and 0·511 ±0·351 % for 29 normals. Ninety-three per cent of the study sample had NDWG values above the upper limit of normal. Sex, diagnosis, smoking, baseline weight, blood pressure, and pulse did not explain these observations. NDWG related (N = 28, r = 0·552, P = 0·002) to antipsychotic drug dose. The implications of our findings are discussed.

The effects of tetrakis(1-methylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrinatomercury(II) [ Hg ( TMPyP )]4+ (6) along with [ Pb ( TMPyP )]4+ (7), [ Cd ( TMPyP )]4+ (8), and [ H 2( TMPyP )]4+ (1) (free base porphyrin) on DNA cleavage by Haemophilus aegyptius (HaeIII) have been studied using gel electrophoresis, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. The gel electrophoresis results indicate that in the absence of 6, HaeIII restriction enzyme could not cleave plasmid DNA at a low concentration of 0.2 units μl-1 after 1 h incubation at 37 °C. However, DNA cleavage occurred in the presence of 6 at the concentrations of 1.0 × 10-6 and 1.0 × 10-7 M and 0.2 units μl-1 of HaeIII under the same conditions. In addition, acceleration of DNA cleavage occurred at a higher concentration of HaeIII (0.4 units μl-1) in the presence of a wider concentration range of 6 from 1.0 × 10-5 to 1.0 × 10-7 M . 8, 7, and 1 could not enhance DNA cleavage in the presence of HaeIII (0.2 units μl-1). However, when the concentration of HaeIII was increased to 0.4 units μl-1, only 8 inhibited DNA cleavage by HaeIII at higher concentrations (1.0 × 10-5-10-6 M ) whereas 6, 7, and 1 did not. The UV-vis and CD spectroscopic results indicate that these porphyrins interact differently with DNA based on their binding modes. 6 enhanced DNA cleavage due to the synergistic effect of the Hg 2+ ions and the free base porphyrin 1 that dissociated from the mercury(II) porphyrin complex upon binding to DNA which resulted in the enhanced transformation of the DNA conformation from the original B-form to a Z-like conformation, while 8 inhibited HaeIII activity at higher concentrations and 7 and 1 neither enhanced nor inhibited DNA cleavage. A mechanism for this phenomenon is suggested.

Chromatographic investigation of the aerial parts of the Rhazya stricta (Apocynaceae) resulted in the isolation of two new monoterpene indole alkaloids, 6-nor-antirhine-N1-methyl (1) and razyamide (2), along with six known compounds, eburenine (3), epi-rhazyaminine (4), rhazizine (5), 20-epi-sitsirikine (6), antirhine (7), and 16-epi-stemmadenine-N-oxide (8). The chemical structures were established by various spectroscopic experiments. Compounds 1–8 exhibited cytotoxic effects against three cancer cells with IC50 values ranging between 5.1 ± 0.10 and 93.2 ± 9.73 µM against MCF-7; 5.1 ± 0.28 and 290.2 ± 7.50 µM against HepG2, and 3.1 ± 0.17 and 55.7 ± 4.29 µM against HeLa cells. Compound 2 showed the most potent cytotoxic effect against all cancer cell lines (MCF-7, HepG2 and HeLa with IC50 values = 5.1 ± 0.10, 5.1 ± 0.28, and 3.1 ± 0.17 µM, respectively). Furthermore, compound 2 revealed a significant increase in the apoptotic cell population of MCF-7, HepG2, and HeLa cells, with 31.4 ± 0.2%, 29.2 ± 0.5%, and 34.9 ± 0.6%, respectively. Compound 2 decreased the percentage of the phagocytic pathway on HepG2 cells by 15.0 ± 0.1%. These findings can explain the antiproliferative effect of compound 2.

ABSTRACTTo study, after weaning at 6 weeks of age, the effect of age on energy utilization of growing calves and to estimate the requirements of metabolizable energy (ME) for calves weighing less than 100 kg, 243 energy balance trials were conducted using 68 Holstein-Friesian castrated male calves at 7, 9 and 13 weeks of age. Regression analyses of energy retention (ER, kj/kg M0·75) on intakes of ME (kJ/kg M0·75) gave the following equations at the respective age: ER = 0·479 (s.e. 0·070) ME — 197, for 7 weeks, ER = 0·521 (s.e. 0·052) ME - 216 for 9 weeks and ER = 0·523 (s.e. 0·043) ME - 236, for 13 weeks. Amounts of ME for maintenance (MEm) calculatedas ER = 0 were 413, 415 and 451 kJ/kg M0·75 for calves at 7, 9 and 13 weeks of age, respectively. The efficiency of utilization of ME for growth was not significantly different among the ages and was 0·500 (s.e. 0023). ME required for growth was estimated to be 510 kJ/kg M0·75 for each kg gain in weight, irrespective of age. The requirements of ME of calves weighing less than 100 kg were lower than those estimated by extrapolation of British and American standards.

The electron-transfer reactions of cellobiose oxidase (CBO) have been investigated by conventional and by rapid-scan stopped-flow spectroscopy at pH 6.0. Analysis of the absorbance/time/wavelength matrix by Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) confirms earlier studies showing that cellobiose rapidly reduces the flavin group (7.7 s-1; cellobiose, 100 microM) which in turn slowly (0.2 s-1) reduces the cytochrome b moiety. In the presence of CBO, cellobiose reduces cytochromes c in a reaction that does not depend on oxygen or superoxide. The rate limit for this process is independent of the source of the cytochromes c and is identical with the rate of cytochrome b reduction. Rapid-mixing experiments show that cytochrome b may donate electrons very rapidly to either mammalian cytochrome c or bacterial cytochrome c-551. The reactions were second-order (kc = 1.75 x 10(7) M-1 x s-1; kc-551 = 4.3 x 10(6) M-1 x s-1; pH 6.0, 21 degrees C and I0.064) and strongly ionic-strength (I)-dependent: kc decreasing with I and kc-551 increasing with I. These results suggest the electron-transfer site near cytochrome b bears a significant negative charge. Equilibrium gel chromatography confirms that CBO oxidase and positively charged mammalian cytochrome c make stable complexes. These results are discussed in terms of a model suggesting an electron-transfer role for cytochrome b in vivo, possibly connected with radical-mediated cellulose breakdown.

ImportancePreclinical models suggest dysregulation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection may increase the relative activity of angiotensin II compared with angiotensin (1-7) and may be an important contributor to COVID-19 pathophysiology.ObjectiveTo evaluate the efficacy and safety of RAS modulation using 2 investigational RAS agents, TXA-127 (synthetic angiotensin [1-7]) and TRV-027 (an angiotensin II type 1 receptor–biased ligand), that are hypothesized to potentiate the action of angiotensin (1-7) and mitigate the action of the angiotensin II.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsTwo randomized clinical trials including adults hospitalized with acute COVID-19 and new-onset hypoxemia were conducted at 35 sites in the US between July 22, 2021, and April 20, 2022; last follow-up visit: July 26, 2022.InterventionsA 0.5-mg/kg intravenous infusion of TXA-127 once daily for 5 days or placebo. A 12-mg/h continuous intravenous infusion of TRV-027 for 5 days or placebo.Main Outcomes and MeasuresThe primary outcome was oxygen-free days, an ordinal outcome that classifies a patient’s status at day 28 based on mortality and duration of supplemental oxygen use; an adjusted odds ratio (OR) greater than 1.0 indicated superiority of the RAS agent vs placebo. A key secondary outcome was 28-day all-cause mortality. Safety outcomes included allergic reaction, new kidney replacement therapy, and hypotension.ResultsBoth trials met prespecified early stopping criteria for a low probability of efficacy. Of 343 patients in the TXA-127 trial (226 [65.9%] aged 31-64 years, 200 [58.3%] men, 225 [65.6%] White, and 274 [79.9%] not Hispanic), 170 received TXA-127 and 173 received placebo. Of 290 patients in the TRV-027 trial (199 [68.6%] aged 31-64 years, 168 [57.9%] men, 195 [67.2%] White, and 225 [77.6%] not Hispanic), 145 received TRV-027 and 145 received placebo. Compared with placebo, both TXA-127 (unadjusted mean difference, −2.3 [95% CrI, −4.8 to 0.2]; adjusted OR, 0.88 [95% CrI, 0.59 to 1.30]) and TRV-027 (unadjusted mean difference, −2.4 [95% CrI, −5.1 to 0.3]; adjusted OR, 0.74 [95% CrI, 0.48 to 1.13]) resulted in no difference in oxygen-free days. In the TXA-127 trial, 28-day all-cause mortality occurred in 22 of 163 patients (13.5%) in the TXA-127 group vs 22 of 166 patients (13.3%) in the placebo group (adjusted OR, 0.83 [95% CrI, 0.41 to 1.66]). In the TRV-027 trial, 28-day all-cause mortality occurred in 29 of 141 patients (20.6%) in the TRV-027 group vs 18 of 140 patients (12.9%) in the placebo group (adjusted OR, 1.52 [95% CrI, 0.75 to 3.08]). The frequency of the safety outcomes was similar with either TXA-127 or TRV-027 vs placebo.Conclusions and RelevanceIn adults with severe COVID-19, RAS modulation (TXA-127 or TRV-027) did not improve oxygen-free days vs placebo. Анотація:
The concept of storing energy in TiO2when it was illuminated with light and using the catalyst when there was no light was tested for the first time. Ni(OH)2was incorporated into TiO2for the energy storage purpose. Ni(OH)2was subjected to three different temperatures (300 – 500°C) before the incorporation. NiO/TiO2bilayer films were prepared with spin-coating method. The films were tested for its electrochemical and photoelectrochemical properties in 1 M NaOH. The NiO/TiO2 film prepared with Ni(OH)2calcined at 300°C showed energy storage potential. The catalysts were then investigated for their catalytic activity in the photocatalytic degradation of acid orange 7 (AO7). The experiments were carried out in a batch reactor containing 500 ml of 20 ppm AO7 and 0.2 g NiO/TiO2bilayer film. The reaction were carried out under UV illumination for 2 h before continuing without the illumination (dark condition) for another 2 h. NiO/TiO2showed photcatalytic properties even without illumination implying that the energy stored during the illumination drove the photocatalytic reaction.

Objective: To determine the link between physical fitness and body composition with nocturnal and nap time in Spanish older adults. Methods: Eight hundred thirty older adults underwent several tests. Sleep was measured using Jenkins Sleep Scale. Nocturnal sleep was categorized (<7, 7–9, and >9 hours), and nap time (no nap, 1–30 minutes, and >30 minutes).Physical fitness was evaluated using validated tests, and body composition by electric bioimpedance. Results: 75.1% of participants were female, mean age 77.7 ± 5.1 years. Mean nocturnal sleep and nap time was 6.7 hours and 23.3 minutes, respectively. Models showed nocturnal sleep >9 hours was significant and positively associated with body shape index (Odds ratio[ OR] = 4.07 ( p = .011)) and waist circumference OR = 1.04 ( p = .024) in females. Males’ waist and hip circumference were positively significantly related to nap time between 1 and 30 minutes, OR = 1.08, p = .009 and OR = 1.08, p = .048, respectively. In females, nap time >30 minutes was associated with greater fat mass and body shape index OR = 1.22, p = .032 and OR = 3.95, p = .027, respectively. Physical fitness showed no associations with sleep outcomes. Conclusions: Sleep patterns do not influence physical fitness but body composition, being more related to female body composition as nocturnal and nap sleep were associated with higher fat mass, waist circumference and body shape index, while only short nap times were related to higher waist and hip circumference in males.

AbstractTyrosine (Tyr) was quantitated with high sensitivity and selectivity in the presence of uric acid (UA) using a carbon paste electrode modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Tyr and UA were catalytically oxidized with diffusion-controlled characteristics. They were determined simultaneously by differential pulse voltammetry with a potential difference of 350 mV. The electrocatalytic currents increase linearly with Tyr and UA concentrations 4×10−7−1×10−4 M and 3×10−7−2×10−4 M. Their detection limits were 1×10−7 and 5.1×10−8 M respectively. In the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate the Tyr detection limit improved from 1×10−7 to 6.9×10−8 M. The electrode was successfully used to quantitate Tyr and UA in serum.

Phosphorus fractionation and analyses for free oxides of Fe, Al and Si were carried out on depth interval samples taken from a sandy soil chronosequence on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The seven profiles sampled ranged in age from 127 yr at Site 1 to 550 yr at Site 7. Calcium-bound phosphate (PCa) decreased in the 0- to 5-cm depth interval samples from 105 mg kg−1 at Site 1 to 2 mg kg−1 at Site 7 and similar but less-pronounced decreases were noted for lower depths. Profile averages of PCa exhibited a linear function with time, whereas exponential trends were noted for the surface 10-cm samples. Abstract We prove that the simple random walk on the uniform infinite planar triangulation (UIPT) typically travels graph distance at most $$n^{1/4 + o_n(1)}$$ n 1 / 4 + o n ( 1 ) in n units of time. Together with the complementary lower bound proven by Gwynne and Miller (2017) this shows that the typical graph distance displacement of the walk after n steps is $$n^{1/4 + o_n(1)}$$ n 1 / 4 + o n ( 1 ) , as conjectured by Benjamini and Curien (Geom Funct Anal 2(2):501–531, 2013. arXiv:1202.5454). More generally, we show that the simple random walks on a certain family of random planar maps in the $$\gamma $$ γ -Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) universality class for $$\gamma \in (0,2)$$ γ ∈ ( 0 , 2 ) —including spanning tree-weighted maps, bipolar-oriented maps, and mated-CRT maps—typically travels graph distance $$n^{1/d_\gamma + o_n(1)}$$ n 1 / d γ + o n ( 1 ) in n units of time, where $$d_\gamma $$ d γ is the growth exponent for the volume of a metric ball on the map, which was shown to exist and depend only on $$\gamma $$ γ by Ding and Gwynne (Commun Math Phys 374:1877–1934, 2018. arXiv:1807.01072). Since $$d_\gamma > 2$$ d γ > 2 , this shows that the simple random walk on each of these maps is subdiffusive. Our proofs are based on an embedding of the random planar maps under consideration into $${\mathbb {C}}$$ C wherein graph distance balls can be compared to Euclidean balls modulo subpolynomial errors. This embedding arises from a coupling of the given random planar map with a mated-CRT map together with the relationship of the latter map to SLE-decorated LQG.

Abstract Six compounds of the 5(7)-alkylamino-6-nitroazolopyrimidine and 8-alkylazolo[5,1-b]purine series were selected based on the structural analysis of A1 adenosine receptor inhibitors and the role of this biological target in the modulation of intraocular pressure, an important factor in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. These heterocycles were shown to exhibit a weak affinity towards the A1 adenosine receptor on an in vitro model of the adenosine-dependent change of the chronotropic effect on isolated atria of white mice. On the other hand, thiadiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidines and triazolo[5,1-b]purine displayed an in vivo hypotensive effect in rats. The leading compound, 5-methyl-8-(hydroxyethyl)triazolo[5,1-b]purine) (0.2% solution), caused a 34% reduction of ophthalmotonus in 3 h without an adverse resorptive effect. In addition, using the MTT-test it was shown on the human HepG2 cell line that the heterocycles affecting the intraocular pressure were by one to two orders of magnitude less cytotoxic than the reference doxorubicin.

High-strength concrete is vulnerable to high temperatures due to its high density. The use of polypropylene fibers could prevent structure explosion by forming canals due to melted fibers during fire, thus release its thermal stress. This study aims to determine the effect of polypropylene fibers on compressive strength of high-strength concrete after combustion at 400ºC for five hours. High-strength concrete was made by w/c-ratio 0.3 with cement amount 550 kg/m3 and added with silica fume 8% and superplasticizer 4% by cement weight. The variations of polypropylene fibers were 0%, 0.2% and 0.4% of concrete volume. The compression test was carried out on standard cylinders Ø15/30 cm of combustion and without combustion specimens at 7 and 28 days. The results showed that compressive strength of high-strength concretes without using polypropylene fibers decreased in post-combustion compared with specimens without combustion, i.e., 0.81% at 7 days and 23.42% at 28 days. Conversely, the use of polypropylene fibers can increase post-combustion compressive strength with a maximum value resulted in adding 0.2% which are 25.52% and 10.44% at 7 and 28 days respectively. It can be concluded that the use of polypropylene fibers is effective to prevent reduction of high-strength concrete compressive strength that are burned at high temperatures.

Abstract Introduction In Colombia Breast cancer (BC), is the most frequent and has the highest mortality rate among all types of cancer. There are few studies of the genomic profile in unselected affected population by BC in Colombia. Some of these studies have only tested the presence of variants reported as founders named “Colombian Profile”.We conducted a large-scale genomic analysis using Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) to evaluate germline mutations in unselected BC patients. Methods This trial included 299 unselected BC female patients aged over 18 years old, without personal and family history of germline BC risk mutations.The protocol was approved by the IRC and EC of Fundación Cardioinfantil (FCI). All patients signed informed consent before recruitment.Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood samples and was used to WES (Novogene Inc. Beijing, China). The variants were filtered using VarSeq v2.1.1 software, following the criteria: missense, non-sense, frameshift, and intronic variants, we additionally considered a MAF ≤0.01 for ATM, CHEK2, and PALB2 genes.Clinical significance of each variant was annotated according to the ACMG/AMP and ENIGMA guidelines.MLPA was assessed using the commercial kit SALSA MLPA Probemix P002-D1 for BRCA1 and P090-C1 for BRCA2 (MRC-Holland, Amsterdam).This study was financially supported by an unrestricted grant from Pfizer. Results This abstract is the first report from 299 patients. To determine the presence of germline variants in the patients a WES was performed. Here we describe the pathogenic and probably pathogenic mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, ATM, CHEK2, PALB2. We found BRCA1/2 alterations were found in 3.7% of the patients (11 patients, IC 95% 1.7-5.6%), 5 patients in BRCA1 and 6 patients in BRCA2 (1.7% IC 95% 0.7-4%, and 2% IC 95% 0.9-4.4% respectively). We found 29 patients had mutations unrelated to BRCA1/2 (9.5% IC 95% 5.8-11.7%). The most frequently affected gene was ATM (17 patients, 5.7% IC95% 3.6-9%). Discussion and conclusion We found that 12.2% of the population of the study were carriers of a pathogenic/likely pathogenic variant in the evaluated genes, and interestingly 9.5% of them corresponded to non-BRCA1/2 genes. ATM variants have a prevalence of 5.7% in the whole population and represent 42% of all the variants. Other mutations in genes like BRCA2, ATM and CHEK2 were exclusive in non-TNBC. Meanwhile, BRCA1 and PALB2 mutations had higher frequencies in TNBC. We identified five novel mutations.We demonstrate that LGRs are not an important molecular cause in non-hereditary cases of BC.27% of the carriers of mutations in BRCA1/2 did not fulfilled NCCN criteria and 82% of the mutations are not described in “Colombian Profile”. These findings demonstrate the particular genetic profile in an unselected population with breast cancer, and this highlights the importance of WES as a molecular diagnostic tool. We think that universal germline testing in cancer should be considered. Background. Anemia in children is still an important public problem in China and can have a profound impact on the physical and mental health of children. The purpose of this study was to explore the risk factors for anemia among Chinese children aged 3–7 years old and to provide some basis for the prevention and control of anemia. Methods. A matched case-control study was conducted and 1104 children (552 cases and 552 controls) were recruited in this study. Cases were children who were diagnosed with anemia by the doctor of physical examination and checked by one deputy chief physician of pediatrics, and controls were healthy children without anemia. Data were collected using a self-designed structured questionnaire. Univariable and multivariable analyses were used to identify independent determinants of anemia. P values less than 0.05 were used to declare statistical significance. Results. In the multivariable analyses, maternal anemia before or during pregnancy and lactation (OR = 2.14, 95% CI: 1.10∼4.15; OR = 2.86, 95% CI: 1.66∼4.94; OR = 2.51, 95% CI: 1.13∼5.60), gestational weeks (OR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.53∼0.96), having G6PD deficiency or thalassemia (OR = 8.12, 95% CI: 2.00∼33.04; OR = 36.25, 95% CI: 10.40∼126.43), having cold and cough in previous two weeks (OR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.04∼2.34), family income (OR = 0.80, 95% CI: 0.65∼0.97), and being a picky eater (OR = 1.80, 95% CI: 1.20∼2.71) were determinants of anemia in children aged 3–7 years old. Conclusions. Some of the identified factors are modifiable and could be targeted to reduce childhood anemia. More emphasis should be given by the concerned bodies to intervene in the anemia problem by improving the maternal health education, screening for disease-related anemia, requesting medical services in a timely manner, improving the economic status of households, promoting dietary habits, and improving sanitation and hygiene practices.

Abstract. The endemic argan tree (Argania spinosa) populations in southern Morocco are highly degraded due to overbrowsing, illegal firewood extraction and the expansion of intensive agriculture. Bare areas between the isolated trees increase due to limited regrowth; however, it is unknown if the trees influence the soil of the intertree areas. Hypothetically, spatial differences in soil parameters of the intertree area should result from the translocation of litter or soil particles (by runoff and erosion or wind drift) from canopy-covered areas to the intertree areas. In total, 385 soil samples were taken around the tree from the trunk along the tree drip line (within and outside the tree area) and the intertree area between two trees in four directions (upslope, downslope and in both directions parallel to the slope) up to 50 m distance from the tree. They were analysed for gravimetric soil water content, pH, electrical conductivity, percolation stability, total nitrogen content (TN), content of soil organic carbon (SOC) and C/N ratio. A total of 74 tension disc infiltrometer experiments were performed near the tree drip line, within and outside the tree area, to measure the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. We found that the tree influence on its surrounding intertree area is limited, with, e.g., SOC and TN content decreasing significantly from tree trunk (4.4 % SOC and 0.3 % TN) to tree drip line (2.0 % SOC and 0.2 % TN). However, intertree areas near the tree drip line (1.3 % SOC and 0.2 % TN) differed significantly from intertree areas between two trees (1.0 % SOC and 0.1 % TN) yet only with a small effect. Trends for spatial patterns could be found in eastern and downslope directions due to wind drift and slope wash. Soil water content was highest in the north due to shade from the midday sun; the influence extended to the intertree areas. The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity also showed significant differences between areas within and outside the tree area near the tree drip line. This was the case on sites under different land usages (silvopastoral and agricultural), slope gradients or tree densities. Although only limited influence of the tree on its intertree area was found, the spatial pattern around the tree suggests that reforestation measures should be aimed around tree shelters in northern or eastern directions with higher soil water content or TN or SOC content to ensure seedling survival, along with measures to prevent overgrazing.

Мета. Покращити результати лікування пацієнтів з післяін’єкційними ускладненнями. Матеріали і методи. Дослідження проведено щодо 49 пацієнтів, яких розподілили на дві групи: основну - 23 пацієнти і порівняльну – 26. В основній групі лікування проводили за розробленою методикою із застосуванням первинного шва, вакуум-аспірації та терапії монооксидом азоту (NO-терапії), у порівняльній – за стандартною методикою. Результати. Найчастіше виникнення післяін’єкційних абсцесів спричиняли внутрішньом’язові ін’єкції нестероїдних протизапальних препаратів – 27 (55,1%) спостережень та магнію сульфату – 11 (22,4%). Рівень С-реактивного білка (СРБ) на 7-му добу дослідження становив (3,1 ± 0,8) мг/л – в основній групі, (12,9 ± 6,0) мг/л – у контрольній групі. Лейкоцитарний індекс інтоксикації (ЛІІ) на 7-му добу в основній групі становив (1,3 ± 0,4) умовних одиниць (у. о.), у порівняльній – (1,9 ± 0,2) у. о. Висновки. Тривалість перебування у стаціонарі пацієнтів, яких лікували за розробленою методикою, була у 2 рази меншою, ніж пацієнтів, яких лікували за стандартною методикою.

AbstractSalt sensitivity is an independent CVD and mortality risk factor, which is present in both hypertensive and normotensive populations. It is genetically determined and it may affect the relationship between salt taste perception and salt intake. The aim of this study was to explore the genetic predisposition to salt sensitivity in a young and a middle-aged adult population and its effects on salt taste perception and salt intake. The effects of Na loading on blood pressure (BP) were investigated in twenty normotensive subjects and salt sensitivity defined as the change in BP after 7 d of low-Na (51·3 mmol Na/d) and 7 d of high-Na diet (307·8 mmol Na/d). Salt taste perception was identified using the British Standards Institution sensory analysis method (BS ISO 3972:2011). Salt intake was assessed with a validated FFQ. DNA was genotyped for SNP in the SLC4A5, SCNN1B and TRPV1 genes. The subjects with AA genotype of the SLC4A5 rs7571842 exhibited the highest increase in BP (∆ systolic BP=7·75 mmHg, P=0·002, d=2·4; ∆ diastolic BP=6·25 mmHg, P=0·044, d=1·3; ∆ mean arterial pressure=6·5 mmHg, P=0·014, d=1·7). The SLC4A5 rs10177833 was associated with salt intake (P=0·037), and there was an association between salt taste perception and salt sensitivity (rs 0·551, P=0·041). In conclusion, there is a genetic predisposition to salt sensitivity and it is associated with salt taste perception. The association between salt taste perception and discretionary salt use suggests that preference for salty taste may be a driver of salt intake in a healthy population and warrants further investigation.

Abstract AMG 531 is a novel thrombopoiesis-stimulating peptibody currently being investigated for the treatment of chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura. This study was a double-blind, phase 1 evaluation of safety (including a platelet aggregation analysis), pharmacodynamics, and pharmacokinetics of AMG 531 in healthy Japanese men. Thirty subjects were randomly assigned 4:1 (AMG 531:placebo) to each of 3 sequential dose cohorts (0.3, 1, and 2 μg/kg) of 10 subjects each. A single dose of AMG 531 or placebo was administered by subcutaneous injection, and subjects were evaluated for 6 weeks. Concentrations of 0.2 and 2 μg/mL collagen and 0.5 and 2 μmol/L adenosine phosphate were used as reagents in the platelet aggregation analysis conducted on day -1, day 2, day 15, and at the end of the study. No enhancement or reduction in platelet aggregation was detected in samples collected from subjects treated with AMG 531 compared with either pretreatment or placebo samples. Overall, adverse events were similar between the AMG 531 and placebo groups. Treatment-related adverse events (headache, “feeling hot,” migraine without aura, and/or malaise) were reported for 5 of 24 subjects treated with AMG 531. Four of 8 subjects who received the 1 μg/kg dose and 7 of 8 subjects who received the 2 μg/kg dose had platelet count increases ≥ 1.5-fold over baseline, and 3 of 8 subjects who received the 2 μg/kg dose had platelet count increases ≥ 2-fold over baseline, a pharmacodynamic effect similar to that seen in previous studies of non-Japanese subjects. Serum concentrations of AMG 531 were below the lower limit of quantification in all but 2 subjects who received the 2 μg/kg dose. In summary, platelets in subjects treated with AMG 531 functioned normally compared with pretreatment and placebo samples. AMG 531 was generally well tolerated and was effective at raising platelet counts after a single subcutaneous administration.

Abstract. We use the global model GOCART to examine the impact of pollution and dust aerosols emitted from their major sources on surface fine particulate matter concentrations at regional and hemispheric scales. Focusing on the North America region in 2001, we use measurements from the IMPROVE network in the United States to evaluate the model-simulated surface concentrations of the "reconstructed fine mass" (RCFM) and its components of ammonium sulfate, black carbon (BC), organic matter (OM), and fine mode dust. We then quantify the RCFM budget in terms of the RCFM chemical composition, source type, and region of origin to find that in the eastern U.S., ammonium sulfate is the dominant RCFM component (~60%) whereas in the western U.S., dust and OM are just as important as sulfate but have considerable seasonal variations, especially in the NW. On an annual average, pollution aerosol (defined as aerosols from fuel combustion for industrial and transportation uses) from North America accounts for 65–70% of the surface RCFM in the eastern U.S. and for a lower proportion of 30–40% in the western U.S.; by contrast, pollution from outside of North America contributes to just 2–6% (~0.2 μg m−3) of the total RCFM over the U.S. In comparison, long-range transport of dust brings 3 to 4 times more fine particles than the transport of pollution to the U.S. (0.5–0.8 μg m−3 on an annual average) with a maximum influence in spring and over the NW. Of the major pollution regions, Europe has the largest potential to affect the surface aerosol concentrations in other continents due to its shorter distance from receptor continents and its larger fraction of sulfate-producing precursor gas in the outflow. With the IPCC emission scenario for the year 2000, we find that European emissions increase levels of ammonium sulfate by 1–5 μg m−3 over the surface of northern Africa and western Asia, and its contribution to eastern Asia (≥0.2 μg m−3) is twice as much as the Asian contribution to North America. Asia and North America pollution emissions exert strong impacts on their neighboring oceans, but their influences over other continents are relatively small (≤10%) due to long traveling distances across the oceans and efficient removal during transport. Among the major dust source regions, Asia displays a significant influence over large areas in the northern hemisphere except over the North Atlantic and the tropics, where African dust dominates. We also notice that the African dust and European pollution can travel eastward through a pathway spanning across Asia and North Pacific to western North America; such a pathway is difficult to detect because these aerosols usually merge and travel together with Asian dust and pollution labeled as "Asian outflow".

Through sampling from production enterprise, and testing methods design, the risk of aflatoxin contamination of Camellia oleifera seed was explored. It was proved that the chance of aflatoxin contamination is very small, for mainly processing happened in wintry and spring. After 7 days, 14 and 21 days artificial inoculation, the aflatoxin B1 in the cake was 1.7, 3.6 and 9.9 μg/kg, respectively, while the quality in camellia benevolence was 2.6, 1.8 μg/kg and below the detection limit 0.2 μg/kg. The results explained that Camellia oleifera seed can be untainted by aflatoxin in hot and humid climate conditions. The study answered the question whether the Camellia oleifera seed could be contaminated by aflatoxin, which wa an unresolved problem for a long-term. Also the conclusion was a warning for the safety of storage and production of Camellia oleifera seed in high temperature seasons.

A1 receptors may participate in renal sympathetic neurotransmission by enhancing the postjunctional effects of norepinephrine. The purpose of this study was to test this concept using A1 receptor knockout (A1AR−/−) mice. In isolated kidneys from nontransgenic mice perfused with Tyrode's solution at a constant rate, renal sympathetic nerve stimulation (RSNS) increased ( P < 0.0001) renal venous perfusate levels of inosine (adenosine metabolite) from 23.9 ± 3.7 to 32.7 ± 5.1, 68.2 ± 12.4, and 94.0 ± 14.3 ng/ml at 3, 5, and 7 Hz, respectively ( n = 28), suggesting frequency-dependent production of adenosine. Conversely, RSNS decreased ( P < 0.0001) renal venous perfusate levels of 5′-AMP (adenosine precursor) from 1.4 ± 0.3 to 1.1 ± 0.3, 0.80 ± 0.2, and 0.6 ± 0.2 ng/ml at 3, 5, and 7 Hz, respectively ( n = 28), suggesting frequency-dependent increased metabolism of 5′-AMP. In kidneys from nontransgenic mice, blockade of adenosine receptors with 1,3-dipropyl-8-p-sulfophenylxanthine attenuated ( P = 0.0130) vasoconstrictor responses to RSNS at 3, 5, and 7 Hz [control ( n = 29): 22 ± 4, 34 ± 6, 42 ± 6 mmHg, respectively; 1,3-dipropyl-8-p-sulfophenylxanthine-treated ( n = 11): 6 ± 1, 12 ± 3, 15 ± 3 mmHg, respectively]. In A1AR−/− kidneys ( n = 10), vasoconstrictor responses to RSNS at 3, 5, and 7 Hz were 7 ± 3, 20 ± 5, and 36 ± 9 mmHg, respectively. In kidneys from wild-type littermates ( n = 9), responses were 27 ± 9, 58 ± 14, and 59 ± 11 mmHg, respectively (effect of genotype: P = 0.0363). In kidneys from nontransgenic mice, 2-chloro- N6-cyclopentyladenosine (CCPA; highly selective A1 receptor agonist) increased renal vasoconstriction induced by norepinephrine ( P = 0.0008; n = 28). In kidneys from A1AR−/− the response to norepinephrine was attenuated and the ability of CCPA to enhance responses to norepinephrine was abolished. In conclusion, adenosine formed during RSNS enhances the postjunctional effects of released norepinephrine by activating A1 receptors.

Abstract Abstract 3532 Introduction: The study is to analyze the prognostic impact of post-induction-BM status combining minimal residual disease (MRD), neutrophil/monocyte maturation return to MDS and quantitation of hematogones in adult AML achieving first morphologic complete remission (mCR). The hypothesis is that the detection of aberrant myeloid progenitor cells, aberrant neutrophil/monocyte maturation and hematogones in post-induction BM by flow cytometry may predict the outcome of AML in mCR even without diagnostic specimen. The positive MRD and the aberrant neutrophil/monocyte maturation will predict worse prognosis. In contrast, positive hematogones will predict better prognosis. Methods: Multidimensional flow cytometry was performed on bone marrow specimens from 47 consecutive non-M3 AML patients who had achieved mCR after standard 3+7 induction treatment. The in-remission immunophenotypic evaluation of BM was done before first consolidation treatment. The aberrant myeloid progenitor cells and aberrant neutrophil/monocyte maturation were defined by the flow cytometric scoring system (FCSS)1. Two investigators were blinded to corresponding pathologic, clinical or diagnostic flow cytometric data during initial analysis phase. After reaching agreement of the three parameters: aberrant myeloid progenitor cells (MRD ≥ 0.2% or not), aberrant neutrophil/monocyte maturation (FCSS ≥ 2 points or not) and hematogones (stages I / II B lymphoid progenitor cells ≥ 0.02% or not), those prognostic impacts on leukemia free survival (LFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Table 1 summarizes the clinical characteristics of patients according to the status of MRD and hematogones. Nine (19%) patients who had MRD ≥0.2% had a significantly worse median LFS (9.0 months vs not reached; P =.006) and worse OS (24.0 months vs not reached; P =.059). Fourteen (30%) patients who had hematogone levels ≥ 0.02% had a significantly better median LFS (not reached vs 13.5 months; P =.045) and a trend of better OS (not reached vs 24.0 months; P =.070). Six (13%) patients who had FCSS ≥ 2 points had a worse median LFS (8.0 vs 48.0 months; P =.052) but not significantly worse OS (17.0 vs 28.0 months; P =.804). A Spearman coefficient for MRD ≥0.2% and hematogone levels ≥ 0.02% was -0.317 (P <.029), indicating a mildly negative correlation. However, MRD ≥0.2% and hematogones ≥ 0.02% were almost mutually exclusive. For clinical convenience, a MRD/Hematogone score was proposed that patient with MRD ≥0.2% was defined as 1 point and hematogone ≥ 0.02% was defined as -1 point. All patients could be categorized into three subgroups: 14(30%) patients with -1 point, 24(51%) patients with 0 point and 9(19%) with 1 point. Patients were stratified based on MRD/Hematogone score to assess survival using the Kaplan-Meier method and the Log-rank test. The median LFS were not reached, 48 months and 9 months for patients with -1 point, 0 point and 1 point, respectively (P =.015; Fig. 1). The median OS were not reached (-1 point), not reached (0 point) and 24 months (1 point) (P =.088). Multivariate analyses using Cox proportional hazard model demonstrated MRD/Hematogone score was an independent predictor of LFS (HR = 2.5, 95% CI, 1.2–5.1, P =.016; Table 2) after adjusting for MRC cytogenetic classification, WBC count (above or below 50000/uL) and whether undergoing allogenetic hematopoietic stem cell transplant before 1st relapse or not. Conclusion: Even without a diagnostic specimen, flow cytometry can assess and quantify aberrant myeloid progenitor cells, aberrant neutrophil/monocyte maturation and hematogones in post-induction marrow. MRD ≥0.2% or neutrophil/monocyte abnormalities (FCSS ≥ 2) predicts shorter LFS. Hematogones ≥ 0.02% predicts longer LFS and correlates negatively with MRD ≥0.2%. Proposed MRD/Hematogone score for post-induction adult AML in mCR maybe offer a simple and practical risk assessment. And the score is worthy to be validated by prospective and larger scale study. The electric field-induced liquid metal manipulation can be affected by the flow rate (0.05~0.2 mL/min), voltage (0~7 kV), and distance (15 and 30 mm) between electrodes, which changes the volume of the electric field-induced generated liquid metal droplet and the number of the generated droplets. When the electric field intensity increases or the flow rate increases, the generated droplet volume decreases, and the number of droplets increases. With the highest voltage of 7 kV with 15 mm between electrodes at the 0.2 mL/min flow rate, the lowest volume and the largest number of the generated droplets for 10 s were ~10 nL and 541, respectively. Additionally, we controlled the direction of the generated droplet by changing the electric field. The direction of the liquid metal droplet was controlled with the maximum angle of ~12°. Moreover, we exhibited a short circuit demonstration by controlling the volume or falling direction of the generated liquid metal droplet with an applied electric field.

Анотація:
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of adding aspirin to the diet on somebiochemical parameters such as blood serum glucose , cholesterol , uric acid , total protein ,phosphorus and calcium concentrations of broilers reared in high density (15 birds / m ) . A 90 chicks 7days old were distributed into two treatments (45 chicks per treatment ) , T1 chicks fed a diet withoutaspirin (control) , chicks in T2 fed a diet supplemented with 0.2 % aspirin (2 mg aspirin / kg feed) .Each treatment subdivided into three replicates and each replicate reared in 1 X 1 m pen . The dataobtained revealed the following:Blood serum glucose concentration were 189 mg /100 ml , cholesterol concentration were 207mg /100 ml , uric acid concentration were 4.6 mg /100 mll of T1 chicks at 7 weeks of age , adding 0.2% of aspirin to the diet (T2) decreased blood serum glucose , cholesterol and uric acid of broiler chicksto 178 , 182 and 4.2 mg /100 ml respectively , in the same time adding aspirin to the diet increasedsignificantly (P<0.01) total protein concentration which were 5.1 gm /100 ml compaired with 4.6gm/100 ml of control chicks (T1) at 7 weeks of age . Adding aspirin to the diet increased significantly(P<0.01) blood serum phosphorus and calcium concentrations which indicated the importance ofadding aspirin in broiler diet to rebalance blood biochemical parameters and reducing crowding stressduring high density production

521 Background: Numerous studies have reported on the efficacy of radiotherapy (RT) after incomplete transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). However, the optimal timing of RT remains unclear. This study investigated the optimal time of initiating RT for incomplete TACE in patients with BCLC stage B hepatocellular carcinoma (BCLC-B HCC). Methods: Between 2001 and 2016, 116 lesions in 104 patients with BCLC-B HCC were treated with RT after TACE. The time interval between the last session of TACE and initiation of RT was obtained from medical records and analyzed retrospectively. The optimal cut-off time-interval that maximized the difference in local failure-free rate (LFFR) was determined using maximally selected rank statistics. Results: The median duration between TACE and RT was 26 (range: 2–165) days. Median number of TACE treatments on the target lesion before RT was 2; median tumor size was 7 cm. At a median follow-up of 18 (range: 3–160) months, the median overall survival was 18 months. The probability of local control increased as the time interval between TACE and RT decreased. The optimal cut-off value of the time interval was 5 weeks. With the cut-off of 5 weeks, 65 and 39 patients were classified into early and late RT groups, respectively. The early RT group had significantly poorer Child-Pugh class and higher alpha-fetoprotein levels. Most characteristics including tumor size (7 cm vs. 6 cm; P = .144) were not significantly different between the groups. One-year LFFR was significantly higher in the early RT group (94.6% vs. 70.8%; P = .005). On multivariate analysis, early RT was an independent predictor of favorable LFFR (hazard ratio: 3.82, 95% confidence interval: 1.64–8.88, P = .002). Conclusions: The optimal time for the administration of RT for incomplete TACE is within 5 weeks following TACE. Early administration of RT within 5 weeks after TACE was associated with better local control.

A soil chronosequence near Cox Bay, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia was investigated. Soils in the sequence have developed on sandy beach deposits, which are advancing toward the ocean at a rate of 0.26 m per year. Dendrochronology and geomorphology established surface ages ranging from 127 to 550 yr for seven selected pedons across these deposits. With soil age, there was progressive deepening and differentiation of genetic horizons, resulting in soil classification that ranged from an Orthic Dystric Brunisol at the youngest site (site 1) to an Orthic Humo Ferric Podzol at the oldest site (site 7). Organic matter increased from a maximum value for mineral horizons of 1.1% in the Bm of site 1 to 4.7% in the Ae of site 7. Oxalate-extractable Al in the uppermost B horizons of the soils increased from 0.12% at site 1 to 0.30% at site 6. Available Mg and K from the lowermost horizons sampled decreased from 35 and 25 mg kg−1 to 4 and 5 mg kg−1, respectively, when moving from sites 1 to 6. Accumulations of organic matter, Fe and Al, and losses of available Mg were plotted against soil age and yielded chronofunctions with exponential solutions.
