Анотація:
Aim This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sarcopenia and change in bone mineral density (BMD) and functional outcome in hip arthroplasty patients. Methods: Among the 221 patients who had undergone hip arthroplasty, 147 patients were enrolled. All patients were divided into 2 groups according to presence of sarcopenia. Bone mineral density (BMD) at hospitalization and 1-year after surgery and Barthel index was measured at the time of before injury, hospitalization, 3 months and 1-year after surgery. Results: BMD at hospitalization showed .627 ± .082 (g/cm2) in Sarcopenia and .726 ± .059 (g/cm2) in Non-sarcopenia at femur (total) site ( P < .001), .531 ± .085 (g/cm2) vs .629 ± .057 (g/cm2) at femur neck site (P=.002), .715 ± .084 (g/cm2) vs .807 ± .058 (g/cm2) at lumbar (L1-L4) site ( P < .001). BMD at 1-year follow-up period, Sarcopenia showed .626 ± .082 (g/cm2) and Non-sarcopenia showed .725 ± .060 (g/cm2) at femur (total) site ( P < .001), .530 ± .085 (g/cm2) vs .629 ± .058 (g/cm2) at femur neck site ( P < .001), .715 ± .084 (g/cm2) vs .806 ± .058 (g/cm2) at lumbar (L1-L4) site ( P < .001). Change of BMD showed −.01 ± .25% for Sarcopenia and −.15 ± .47% for Non-sarcopenia in femur (total) site (P=.089), −.08 ± .63% vs −.01 ± 1.01% in femur neck site ( P = .058), .00 ± .09% vs −.12 ± .33% for each group in lumbar (L1-L4) site ( P = .052). Barthel index score showed 79.94 ± 5.66 for Sarcopenia and 84.74 ± 5.36 for Non-sarcopenia at pre-injury status ( P < .001), 33.89 ± 4.94 vs 33.87 ± 5.36 at the time of hospitalization ( P = .977), 57.42 ± 7.19 vs 60.06 ± 5.39 at 3 months follow up ( P = .015), 73.86 ± 5.94 vs 80.71 ± 4.81 for each group at 1-year follow up ( P < .001). Conclusions: Our study found that the sarcopenia showed lower BMD than the non-sarcopenia, but there was no significant difference of BMD change in the follow-up period. In addition, the sarcopenia showed poor functional results at all points except at the time of hospitalization.

Производство лиофилизированныхкомпонентов плазмы крови требует сведения к минимуму риска контаминации микроорганизмами, аэрозольными частицами и пирогенами. Отсутствие конечной стадии стерилизации лиофилизированных компонентов плазмы крови увеличивает риски контаминации готовой продукции и повышает потенциальную значимость концентрации аэрозольных частиц размером 0,5 и 5,0 мкм, которые могут сорбировать на своей поверхности микроорганизмы. Цель. Выявить влияние комплекса противомикробных мероприятий на содержание аэрозольных частиц размером 0,5 и 5,0 мкм и результаты микробиологического испытания воздушной среды производственных помещений группы лиофилизации отдела промышленного производства лекарственных средств РНПЦ трансфузиологии и медицинских биотехнологий. Материалы и методы. Материалом служили результаты микробиологического мониторинга и оценки содержания аэрозольных частиц размером 0,5 и 5,0 мкм в 1 м3 воздуха производственной среды группы лиофилизации отдела промышленного производства лекарственных средств за 2020–2022 гг., а также результаты оценки риска бактериальной контаминации криопреципитата лиофилизированного за аналогичный период. Результаты. Установлено, что в результате проведенного комплекса корректирующих мероприятий было получено улучшение отдельных контролируемых показателей воздушной среды: количество превышений концентрации аэрозольных частиц размером 0,5 мкм снизилось с 70% в 2020 г. до 37% в 2022 г., уменьшилось количество превышений значений приемлемых величин уровня микробной контаминации воздушной среды с 5% в 2020 г. до 0 в 2022 г. В 2022 г. не было забраковано ни одной серии криопреципитата лиофилизированного в сравнении с 2020 г. и 2021 г. Комплекс проводимых мероприятий не оказал существенного влияния на количество частиц размером 5,0 мкм в 1 м3 воздуха. Заключение. Обеспечение должного уровня бактериальной безопасности лиофилизированных компонентов плазмы крови требует разработки комплекса мероприятий, учитывающего особенности производственного процесса, и не исключает необходимости мониторинга концентрации аэрозольных частиц размером 0,5 и 5,0 мкм. The production of lyophilized blood plasma components requires minimizing the risk of contamination by microorganisms, aerosol particles and pyrogens. The absence of the final stage of sterilization of lyophilized blood plasma components increases the risks of contamination of the finished product and increases the potential significance of the concentration of aerosol particles of 0.5 and 5.0 microns in size, which can adsorb microorganisms on their surface. Purpose. To reveal the effect of a complex of antimicrobial measures on the content of aerosol particles with a size of 0.5 and 5.0 μm and the results of microbiological tests of the air environment of the industrial premises of the lyophilization group of the department of industrial production of medicines of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Transfusiology and Medical Biotechnologies. Materials and methods. The material was the results of microbiological monitoring and assessment of the content of aerosol particles of 0.5 and 5.0 μm in 1 m3 of air in the production environment of the lyophilization group of the industrial production of medicines department for 2020–2022, as well as the results of assessing the risk of bacterial contamination of lyophilized cryoprecipitate for the same period. Results. It was found that as a result of the complex of corrective measures taken, an improvement in certain controlled indicators of the air environment was obtained: the number of exceedances of the concentration of aerosol particles with a size of 0.5 microns decreased from 70% in 2020 to 37% in 2022, decreased the number of exceedances of acceptable level values air microbial contamination from 5% in 2020 to 0 in 2022. In 2022, not a single batch of freeze-dried cryoprecipitate was rejected in comparison with 2020 and 2021. The set of measures taken did not have a significant impact on the number of particles with a size of 5.0 microns in 1 m3 of air. Conclusions. To ensure a sufficient level of bacterial safety of lyophilized blood plasma components, it is necessary to develop a set of measures that take into account the specifics of the production process and does not exclude the need to monitor the concentration of aerosol particles with a size of both 0.5 and 5.0 microns.

Zat goniotalamin pada tanaman gajah beranak (Goniothalamus tapis) merupakan obat alternatif penyembuhan kanker. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mendapatkan zat goniotalamin melalui kultur kalus dan kultur suspensi sel. Metode penelitian eksperimen Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan kombinasi 2,4-D (1-10 mgL-1) dan BAP (0,5-2 mgL-1) menggunakan eksplan batang muda, terdiri dari 17 perlakuan dan 3 kali ulangan. Analisis data menggunakan Analysis of Variances dan uji lanjut Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) taraf 5%. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa kultur kalus G. tapis pada media 5,0 mg L-1 2,4-D + 1 mg L-1 BAP adalah yang terbaik dengan waktu muncul kalus 28,33 hari dan persentase pembentukan kalus 100%. Kalus untuk kultur suspensi sel bertekstur remah dan berwarna kuning kehijauan. Kultur suspensi sel menghasilkan pertumbuhan sel yang cepat, tidak lembek berair dan mudah dipisahkan. Hasil kualitatif Kromatografi Lapis Tipis kultur suspensi sel sangat jelas, bersih dan terdapat potensi kandungan zat goniotalamin pada perlakuan 2,4-D 5 mg L-1 + BAP 0,5 mg L-1, 2,4-D 5 mg L-1 + BAP 1 mg L-1, 2,4-D 5 mg L-1 + BAP 2 mg L-1, 2,4-D 10 mg L-1 + BAP 0,5 mg L-1 dan 2,4-D 10 mg L-1 + BAP 1 mg L-1. Hasil kuantitatif zat goniotalamin dengan Kromatografi Cair Prestasi Tinggi terdapat pada perlakuan 2,4-D 5,0 mgL-1 + BAP 1 mg L-1 yaitu 9,57 mg g-1.The goniothalamine compound on Goniothalamus tapis is an alternative cancer medicine. This study aimed to obtain gonotalamin through callus culture and suspension cell culture. The experiment research method was Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with a combination of 2.4-D (1-10 mg L-1) and BAP (0.5-2 mg L-1) using young stem explants consisting of 17 treatments with 3 replications. Data analysis used ANOVA and DMRT at 5%. The results showed that G. tapis callus culture on 5.0 mg L-1 2.4-D + 1 mg L-1 BAP was the best treatment medium with callus emergence time of 28.33 days and percentage of callus formation 100%. The callus used for suspension cell culture was friable and greenish-yellow in color. Suspension cell culture resulted in rapid cell growth, was not fleshy, and easily separated. The quality test by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) from suspension cell culture resulted very clear, clean, and potential content of goniothalamin found in treatments 2.4-D 5.0 mg L-1 + BAP 0.5 mg L-1, 2.4-D 5.0 mg L-1 + BAP 1 mg L-1, 2.4-D 5.0 mg L-1 + BAP 2 mg L-1, 2.4-D 10 mg L-1 + BAP 0.5 mg-1 and 2.4-D 10 mg-1 + BAP 1 mg-1. The quantitative results of the best goniotalamine compounds in cell suspension cultures using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) on medium 2,4-D 5.0 mgL-1 + BAP 1 mg L-1 ie 9.57 g-1.

Stress factors, infections, tumor transformation of the cells of organism induce the expression of MICA protein, which is a ligand for the NKG2D receptor of NK and T cells. The interaction of the NKG2D receptor on the surface of the cells of the immune system with MICA results in activation of lymphocytes and elimination of the ligand carrier. The MICA gene has a high level of polymorphism. To date, 87 alleles have been described; their products differ in ability to activate cytotoxic lymphocytes, that can affect the progression of a number of diseases, such as cancer, viral infections, autoimmune diseases. The distribution of MICA alleles in different ethnic groups varies considerably. The analysis of MICA polymorphism in a current ethnos is necessary for revealing the relationships between certain MICA alleles and different diseases. Goal. This work is aimed at studying of the distribution of MICA alleles in Russian population. Materials and methods. Polymorphism of MICA was analyzed according to the procedure proposed by Yizhou Zoe and Peter Stastny. The procedure included: 1) isolation of genomic DNA from whole blood; 2) PCR for amplification of a fragment of the MICA gene; 3) sequencing of the resulting PCR fragments. Analysis of the results of sequencing was carried out using the programs Vector NTI and Chromas Lite. Results. The genotype of the MICA alleles of 119 donors has been determined. Of the 87 MICA alleles described in the literature, 15 were found among the samples studied. The frequencies of MICA alleles were the following: *002 – 19.3%, *004 – 6.7%, *007 – 3.0%, *008 – 35.7%, *009 – 10.1%, *010 – 5.0%, *011 – 3.8%, *012 – 2.1%, *016 – 2.5%, *017 – 3.4% *018 – 5.5%, *019 – 0.4%, *027 – 1.3%, *053 – 0.8%, *068 – 0.4%. The distribution of MICA alleles in Russia was found to be similar to that of European countries. When comparing literary data for different countries of the world, it was found that the differences in the distribution of MICA alleles are expressed mainly between races, and not nations. Conclusions. In this paper, the distribution of MICA alleles in Russian population has been analyzed. It turned out to be very similar to those of other European countries and has a number of significant differences from the ethnoses of the Mongoloid race (Japan, China, Korea). The analysis of the distribution of MICA alleles in the Russian population may be useful for identifying the predisposition of individuals to certain diseases.

ObjectiveTo assess the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Medicaid expansion’s impact on new hypertension and diabetes diagnoses in community health centres (CHCs).DesignRates of new hypertension and diabetes diagnoses were computed using generalised estimating equation Poisson models and we tested the difference-in-difference (DID) pre-ACA versus post-ACA in states that expanded Medicaid compared with those that did not.SettingWe used electronic health record data (pre-ACA: 1 January 2012–31 December 2013—post-ACA: 1 January 2014–31 December 2016) from the Accelerating Data Value Across a National Community Health Center Network clinical data network. We included clinics with ≥50 patients contributing to person-time-at risk in each study year.ParticipantsPatients aged 19–64 with ≥1 ambulatory visit in the study period were included. We then excluded patients who were pregnant during the study period (N=127 530). For the hypertension outcome, we excluded individuals with a diagnosis of hypertension prior to the start of the study period, those who had a hypertension diagnosis on their first visit to a clinic or their first visit after 3 years without a visit, and those who had a diagnosis more than 3 years after their last visit (pre-ACA non-expansion N=130 973; expansion N=193 198; post-ACA non-expansion N=186 341; expansion N=251 015). For the diabetes analysis, we excluded patients with a diabetes diagnosis prior to study start, on their first visit or first visit after inactive patient status, and diagnosis while not an active patient (pre-ACA non-expansion N=145 435; expansion N=198 558; post-ACA non-expansion N=215 039; expansion N=264 644).ResultsIn non-expansion states, adjusted hypertension diagnosis rates saw a relative decrease of 6%, while in expansion states, the adjusted rates saw a relative increase of 7% (DID 1.14, 95% CI 1.11 to 1.18). For diabetes diagnosis, adjusted rates in non-expansion states experienced a significant relative increase of 28% and in expansion states the relative increase was 25%; yet these differences were not significant pre-ACA to post-ACA comparing expansion and non-expansion states (DID 0.98, 95% CI 0.91 to 1.05).ConclusionThere was a differential impact of Medicaid expansion for hypertension and diabetes diagnoses. Moderate increases were found in diabetes diagnosis rates among all patients served by CHCs post-ACA (both in expansion and non-expansion states). These increases suggest that ACA-related opportunities to gain health insurance (such as marketplaces and the Medicaid expansion) may have facilitated access to diagnostic tests for this population. The study found a small change in hypertension diagnosis rates from pre-ACA to post-ACA (a decrease in non-expansion and an increase in expansion states). Despite the significant difference between expansion and non-expansion states, the small change from pre-ACA to post-ACA suggests that the diagnosis of hypertension is likely documented for patients, regardless of health insurance availability. Future studies are needed to understand the impact of the ACA on hypertension and diabetes treatment and control.

Pembenihan ikan kerapu dihadapkan pada rendahnya sintasan, terutama fase awal hidupnya. Rendahnya sintasan diduga berhubungan dengan belum berkembangnya organ pencernaan larva dan tidak tersedianya pakan yang siap diserap tubuh. Pemberian asam amino bebas seperti taurin dan glutamin melalui rotifer diharapkan dapat meningkatan ketersediaan nutrien yang dapat diserap dengan cepat oleh larva, sehingga sintasan larva tinggi dan dapat tumbuh lebih cepat. Penelitian bertujuan mengukur pengaruh glutamin atau taurin terhadap sintasan dan pertumbuhan larva kerapu bebek Cromileptes altivelis. Larva umur 1 hari (10 ekor.L-1) dipelihara dalam bak fiberglass volume 500 L yang diisi air laut sampai 330 L. Larva diberi pakan rotifer diperkaya 0,5 g glutamin, 0,5 g taurin, atau tanpa glutamin dan taurin. Larva dipelihara selama 16 hari dengan pemberian pakan 2 kali per hari. Satu jam setelah pemberian pakan dilakukan pengamatan terhadap jumlah rotifer dalam saluran pencernaan larva ikan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan jumlah rotifer dalam saluran pencernaan larva meningkat seiring dengan bertambahnya umur. Namun, jumlah rata-rata rotifer yang dikonsumsi larva pada perlakuan 0,5 g glutamin atau 0,5 g taurin lebih banyak dibanding perlakuan tanpa taurin dan glutamin. Larva yang diberi rotifer hasil pengkayaan dengan 0,5 g glutamin atau 0,5 g taurin memiliki sintasan yang tidak berbeda (P>0,05), masing-masing 19,2±2,25%, dan 24,5±1,20%, dan secara signifikan lebih banyak dibanding larva di perlakuan tanpa glutamin dan taurin yang nilainya 13,0±1,70%. Larva yang diberi rotifer hasil pengkayaan dengan 0,5 g taurin secara signifikan lebih panjang (5,5±0,18 mm) dari ikan di perlakuan 0,5 g glutamin (5,3±0,12 mm). The hatchery production of grouper faced to the problem of low surival rate, especially during the first feeding period. During this period, the digestive organ of larvae was underdeveloped, and the nutrient in live food was not readily absorbed by larvae. Feeding on free amino acids, such as taurine or glutamine, enriched rotifer would be enhanced the nutrient readily absorbed thereby resulting to the improvement of growth and survival rate of larvae. A duplicate experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of rotifer enriched with free amino acid of glutamine or taurine, on the growth and survival rate of larval grouper Cromileptes altivelis. One day old larvae were cultured in 500 l fiberglass containing 330 l of sea water with a density of 10 ind.L-1. Larvae were fed on rotifer enriched with either 0.5 g glutamine, 0.5 g taurine, or without glutamine nor taurine. Larvae were fed on rotifer twice a day at 08.00 and 14.00, and cultured for 16 days. One h after feeding, rotifer content in the gut of larvae were observed. Results showed that larvae fed on rotifer enriched with 0.5 g taurine or 0.5 g glutamie had higher rotifer content in the gut than that in the other group. Larvae fed on rotifer enriched with 0.5 g glutamine or 0.5 g taurine had the same survival rate (P>0.05), 19.2±2.25% and 24.5±1.20%, respectively; these values were significantly higher than that in the other group which was 13.0±1.70%. The total length of larvae fed on rotifer enriched with 0.5 g taurine (5.5±0.18 mm) significantly was the biggest compared than others; while those fed on rotifer enriched with 0.5 g glutamine (5.3±0.12 mm) was bigger than fish fed on rotifer without glutamine nor taurine (5.0±0.16 mm). Thus, it can be concluded that survival rate and growth of larvae were improved when feeding on rotifer enriched with taurine or glutamine. Nevertheless, taurine was more efective than glutamine due to its effect resulted the highest growth performance of larval grouper. Keywords: taurine, glutamine, grouper, Cromileptes altivelis

Анотація:
In the Non-chernozem zone of Russia, the recurrent spring cold up to 1-2 C can cause damage and death of thermophilic amaranth seedlings. Pre-sowing treatment of seeds with growth regulators is an inexpensive and effective method to reduce the negative effect of hypothermia on seed germination. The aim of the research was to study the effect of low-temperature stress on etiolated and de-etiolated seedlings of amaranth cv. Valentina ( A. tricolor L.) grown from seeds treated with growth stimulants. Seeds were pretreated with aqueous solutions of Albit (1 g/L), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) - 5 mM and succinic acid (ScA) - 500 mg/L. Seeds were germinated in peat pots at 23 2 C (T23) for 7 days. On the 7th day, peat pots with seedlings grown in the light and in the dark were moved to thermostat at 2.0 0.5 C (T2) for 8 hours. Determination of the amount of amaranthine, chlorophylls and carotenoids were carried out according to generally accepted methods. Pretreatment of seeds with the growth regulators Albit, H2O2, and ScA increased hypocotyl length, root length, and biomass of light and etiolated seedlings. Low positive temperatures increased the content of amaranthine and carotenoids but reduced the content of chlorophylls. It was shown that all used growth regulators - H2O2, Albit and ScA trigger or at least maintain the system of antioxidant protection in light and etiolated seedlings of amaranth cv. Valentina under low positive temperatures.

Анотація:
In present study, a modification of the NiAl LDH composite with chitosan was successful. Characterization was carried out using X-rays, The results obtained show that there is an angle of 2θ at 11.57°(003); 22.91°(006); 35.04°(012); 39.73°(015); and 61.9°(110). The FT-IR spectrum of the Chitosan@NiAl LDH at Wavenumber 3448, 1635, 1543, and 601 cm−1. The NiAl LDH and chitosan have a surface area of 3.288 m2/g and 8.558 m2/g, respectively. An increase in the surface area of the composite Chitosan@NiAl LDH 9.493 m2/g, all of adsorbents follow type IV isotherm based on the classification according to IUPAC. The optimum pH of the NiAl LDH at pH 3. The optimum pH for chitosan and chitosan@NiAl LDH material is at the optimum pH of 5. The kinetic and isotherm model in the adsorption process is pseudo-second-order and Freundlich model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of NiAl LDH, chitosan, and chitosan@NiAl LDH is 25.445, 23.753, and 33.223 mg/g, respectively. The increase in regeneration cycles causes a decrease in the percentage of adsorbed; sequentially, the percentage adsorbed during the fifth regeneration reaches 3.545, 1.966, 4.309%, respectively.

Đặt vấn đề: Phẫu thuật tim nội soi ít xâm lấn đang dần trở thành xu hướng thay thế dần phẫu thuật mở xương ức với những kết quả tích cực, trong đó điều trị bệnh lý u nhầy nhĩ. Báo cáo của chúng tôi nhằm đưa ra kết quả ban đầu trong điều trị nội soi toàn bộ cắt bỏ khối u nhầy nhĩ phải. Đối tượng và phương pháp nghiên cứu: Mô tả, hồi cứu hồ sơ bệnh án. 5 bệnh nhân được chẩn đoán u nhầy nhĩ phải được phẫu thuật nội soi toàn bộ cắt khối u nhầy với tim đập trong thời gian từ tháng 3/2019 đến tháng 10/2020. Đánh giá qua các thông số thời gian mổ, thở máy, nằm hồi sức và hậu phẫu sau mổ. Kết quả: Tổng số 5 bệnh nhân ( 4 nữ; 1 nam). Tuổi trung bình 57± 6,92. Thời gian mổ 3,1± 0,5 giờ, chạy máy tim phổi nhân tạo 101,2 ± 32,8 phút, thời gian nằm hồi sức 40,4 ± 17,3 giờ, thời gian hậu phẫu 4,4 ± 1,7 ngày. Không có tử vong bệnh viện, không chảy máu sau mổ, không tai biến tắc mạch khí. Kết luận: Phẫu thuật nội soi toàn bộ cắt bỏ u nhầy nhĩ phải khả thi, có thể thực hiện được, nên được nghiên cứu và áp dụng.

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most toxic heavy metals. It is of great environmental concern and its toxicity has been investigated in a variety of cells. In this study, we elucidated the toxic effects of Cd in cells of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). Our results showed that Cd2+ (0.05–5.0 mmol·L−1) significantly inhibited yeast cell growth, and the inhibitory effect was positively correlated with Cd2+ concentrations. Cd2+ caused loss of yeast cell viability in a concentration- and duration-dependent manner. Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Ca2+ levels increased in yeast cells after exposure to 5.0 mmol·L−1 Cd for 6 h. Cd2+-caused cell viability loss was blocked by antioxidants (0.5 mmol·L−1 ascorbic acid or 500 U·mL−1 catalase) or Ca2+ antagonists (0.5 mmol·L−1 ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid or 0.5 mmol·L−1 LaCl3). Moreover, a collapse of mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) was observed in Cd2+-treated yeast cells. These results indicate that Cd-induced yeast cell killing was associated with the elevation of intracellular ROS and Ca2+ levels and also the loss of ΔΨm.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan nilai koefisien absorpsi bunyi dan impedansi akustik dengan menggunakan metode tabung. Panel akustik dibuat dari material akustik berbahan dasar serat tandan kosong kelapa sawit dan matriks lem kanji dengan memvariasikan panjang serat yang digunakan pada setiap sampel. Variasi panjang serat yang digunakan yaitu 0,5 cm, 1 cm, 1,5 cm, 2 cm dan 3 cm. Variasi frekuensi yang digunakan pada penelitian ini yaitu 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, 4000 Hz, 8000 Hz. Nilai koefisien absorpsi yang tertinggi yaitu 0,99 pada frekuensi 500 Hz untuk sampel 1, sampel 3 dan sampel 4. Nilai impedansi akustik tertinggi terdapat pada sampel 1 yaitu 1,96 dyne.sec/cm5 pada frekuensi 500 Hz. Semakin panjang variasi serat yang digunakan maka akan menghasilkan porositas yang tinggi sehingga penyerapan gelombang bunyi menjadi maksimal. Berdasarkan ISO 11654 nilai koefisien absorpsi bunyi dan impedansi akustik minimum adalah 0,15, dan serat tandan kosong kelapa sawit memiliki nilai di atas 0,15 sehingga berpotensi sebagai bahan dasar material akustik.

Abstract This research studied the engineering properties of hydroxyapatite based on fly ash-geopolymer as a biomaterial. The ratio of Na2O/SiO2 and K2O/SiO2 at 0.15 0.20 0.25 0.30 by mole, 2.5 5.0 7.5, 10 wt.% of calcium phosphate and heat treatment at 500°C, 600°C and 700°C for 2 hours were used to studied changed of compressive strength and crystalline phase in samples. The results observed highest 28-days compressive strength of 21.99 and 19.14 MPa for 0.20 by mole of Na2O/SiO2 and 0.15 by mole of K2O/SiO2, respectively. When calcium phosphate (CP) was added in fly ash-geopolymer, the optimum ratio of CP was found in 2.5 wt.% that have unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 19.03 and 13.60 MPa for NaOH and KOH activator. After heat treatment of geopolymer at 500°C, the maximum compressive strength at 9.09 MPa and 22.76 MPa for each activator was obtained. Finally, the XRD resulted show hydroxyapatite, mullite quartz and sodium aluminum silicate peaks in both fly ash-geopolymer with NaOH and KOH and 2.5% CP.

Ischemia-induced angiogenic response is reduced in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). To study whether exogenous basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) infusion is effective in expanding collateral circulation in frankly hypertensive SHR, femoral arteries of male SHR (weighing ∼250 g) were kept intact (nonoccluded control; n = 9) or occluded for4h( n = 12) or for 16 days with vehicle ( n = 14) or bFGF [0.5 ( n = 17), 5.0 ( n = 13), and 50.0 ( n = 14) μg · kg–1 · day–1 for 14 days] intraarterially. Maximal collateral-dependent blood flows (BF) to the hindlimbs were determined with 85Sr- and 141Ce-labeled microspheres during running at 20 and 25 m/min (15% grade). Preexercise heart rates (∼530 beats/min) and blood pressures (BP; ∼200 mmHg) were similar across groups except in the high-dose bFGF group, where BP was reduced by ∼12% ( P < 0.05). Femoral artery occlusion for 4 h resulted in ∼95% reduction of BF in calf muscles [199 ± 18.7 (nonoccluded group) to 10 ± 1.0 ml · min–1 · 100 g–1; P < 0.001]. BF to calf muscles of the vehicle and low-dose bFGF (0.5 μg · kg–1 · day–1) groups increased to 36 ± 3.2 and 45 ± 2.0 ml · min–1 · 100 g–1, respectively ( P < 0.001). bFGF infusion at 5.0 and 50.0 μg · kg–1 · day–1 further increased ( P < 0.001) BF to calf muscles (62 ± 4.6 and 62 ± 2.2 ml · min–1 · 100 g–1, respectively). Our results show that bFGF can effectively increase BF in hypertensive rats. The reduced hypertension with high-dose bFGF suggests that a critical signal in arteriogenesis (nitric oxide bioavailability) may be restored. These findings suggest that the dulled endothelial nitric oxide synthase of SHR does not preempt collateral vessel remodeling.

AbstractComplex formation and liquid-liquid extraction were studied in systems containing Ga(III), azoderivative of resorcinol {4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol (PAR) or 4-(2-thiazolylazo)resorcinol (TAR)}, 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC), water and chloroform. The optimum conditions w.r.t. pH, extraction time, concentration of ADR and concentration of TTC for the extraction of Ga(III) as an ion-associate complex were found.. The composition of the extracted complexes, (TT+)[Ga(PAR)2] (I), (TT+)[Ga(TAR)2] (II) or (TT+)2[Ga(OH)(TAR)2] (III), and the constants of association (β) between 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium cation (TT+) with corresponding anionic chelates were established by several methods. The constants of distribution (KD) and extraction (Kex) of the principal species I and III were determined as well. The apparent molar absorptivities of the chloroform extract at the optimum extraction-spectrophotometric conditions were ɛ′510=9.5×104 L mol−1 cm−1 (I) and ɛ′530=4.6×104 L mol−1 cm−1 (III). The validity of Beer’s law was checked and analytical characteristics that were calculated are reported herein.

530 Background: For borderline resectable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (BR-PDAC), upfront surgery was standard in the past, and the usefulness of neoadjuvant treatment (NAT) has been reported in recent years. However, few studies have been conducted to date on whether there is a difference in optimal treatment between BR-PDAC invading the portal vein (BR-PV) or abutting major arteries (BR-A). The objective of this study was to investigate the optimal treatment for BR-PV and BR-A. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 199 patients with BR-PDAC (88 BR-PV and 111 BR-A). For each BR-PV and BR-A, we analyzed the following points. 1) Comparison of prognosis of upfront surgery vs. NAT, 2) Comparison of regimens in patients who underwent NAT, 3) Prognostic factors in patients who underwent resection after NAT. Results: 1) In BR-PV patients who underwent upfront surgery (n = 46)/NAT (n = 42), survival was significantly better in the NAT group (3-year overall survival (OS): 5.8%/35.5%, p = 0.004). In BR-A patients who underwent upfront surgery (n = 48)/NAT (n = 63), survival was also significantly better in the NAT group (3-year OS:15.5%/41.7%, p < 0.001). 2) The prognosis tended to be better in patients who received newer chemotherapeutic regimens, such as FOLFIRINOX and gemcitabine with nab-paclitaxel than older regimens such as gemcitabine and/or S-1, in each BR-PV and BR-A patients. The R0 rate was significantly higher (100%) when radiotherapy was used in combination with chemotherapy, regardless of the chemotherapeutic regimen. 3) In 36 BR-PV patients who underwent surgery after NAT, univariate analysis revealed that normalization of tumor marker levels ( p = 0.028) and preoperative high prognostic nutritional index (PNI) ( p = 0.022) were significantly associated with a favorable prognosis. In 39 BR-A patients who underwent surgery after NAT, multivariate analysis revealed that preoperative PNI > 42.5 was an independent prognostic factor (hazard ratio: 0.15, p = 0.014). The length of NAT was not a prognostic factor for either BR-PV or BR-A. Conclusions: NAT using newer chemotherapy is essential for improving the prognosis of BR pancreatic cancer. These findings suggest that prognosis may be improved by maintaining good nutritional status during preoperative treatment, not by the length of preoperative treatment. In addition, surgery after normalization of tumor markers levels by preoperative treatment contributes to the prolongation of survival.

The objectives of this study were to develop systems for mass proliferation, rooting, and reestablishment of microcuttings of Helleborus orientalis and Aconitum uncinatum. Basal medium for H. orientalis contained 1/2 MS with 0.4 mg thiamine–HCl/liter, 0.5 mg pyridoxine–HCI/liter, 0.5 mg nicotinic acid/liter, 100 mg i-inositol/liter, 5 mg BA/liter, 2% sucrose, and 0.7% Phytagar. There was no effect of GA (1 mg–liter–1) or TDZ (0.1, 1 mg–liter–1) on axillary shoot proliferation. Helleborus orientalis rooted in vermiculite, Redi-Earth, or 4 perlite: 1 peat with 50% to 56% survival. A field plot containing 18 clonal H. orientalis has been established. Basal medium for A. uncinatum contained WPM with 2% sucrose, 2.5 mg BA/liter, 150 ppm ascorbic acid, 150 ppm citric acid, and 0.7% Phytagar. There was no effect of photoperiod (8, 12, 14 h, 52.5 μmol–m–2–s–1 photosynthetic active radiation) or banana extract on axillary shoot proliferation. Significantly more axillary shoots were generated in the presence of BA (10 mg–liter–1) + kinetin (10 mg–liter–1). Medium containing 500 ppm of PVPP resolved blackening of microcutting bases. More than 500 in vitro-rooted microcuttings (1 mg IBA/liter) survived and grew when transplanted into MetroMix 510 and placed under humidity domes for 6 weeks in the mist.

Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity in iceberg lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is increased in response to several kinds of stress, including wounding, exposure to ethylene, and fungal infection. Ethylene-induced PAL activity is correlated with the discoloration and shelf-life of fresh cut lettuce (Couture et al. 1993. HortScience 28:723). The objective of this research was to further characterize the kinetics of wound-induced PAL in fresh cut lettuce. Leaves of different cvs were cut into salad pieces (1.5 × 3 cm), rinsed in chlorinated water, centrifuged manually, and placed into containers at 5 or 15C through which humidified air flowed. Samples were evaluated for overall visual quality and specific types of discoloration. Midrib tissue was also finely cut (1 × 0.5 cm) for enhanced wound-induction of PAL, which was assayed spectrophotometrically. The kinetics of PAL in midrib tissue of fine cut and salad cut lettuce were similar, with maximum activities obtained within 12-16 h at 15C and within 40-60 h at 5C. Maximum PAL levels in the fine cut lettuce were 1.5-2.0 times those observed in the salad cut pieces, and similar to those induced by ethylene. The usefulness of PAL as a predictor of the storage life of fresh cut lettuce depends on simplifying and expediting the PAL assay.

A thermostable glucoamylase from Aspergillus fumigatus was purified to homogeneity. It was a glycoprotein with 23% carbohydrate content and an apparent molecular mass of 42 kDa. The enzyme showed maximal activities at pH 4.5-5.5 and 65°C and preferentially attacked polysacharides, such as starch, glycogen, amylopectin, and amylose, rather than maltose and maltoriose. The Kmand Vmaxof soluble starch hydrolysis at 40°C and pH 5.0 were 0.1 mg ·mL-1and 161 µmol glucose equivalents liberated ·min-1·mg protein-1, respectively. The purified enzyme was remarkably insensitive to glucose. ABSTRACT – The improvement of tropical maize inbred lines by genetic transformation techniques remains a difficult task since not all genotypes are capable of regenerating efficiently in vitro. The objective of this study was to evaluate three different callus induction media, based on N6 or MS salts containing either 2,4-D (0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0, 30.0 mg .L-1) or Dicamba (0; 0.25; 0.5; 1.0; 2.0; 4.0 mg.l-1) in the production of embryogenic callus from immature zygotic embryos of the tropical maize inbred line L3. Callus maturation was tested in MS medium containing 60 g.L-1 sucrose and supplemented with different combinations of BAP (0; 0.1; 0.5; 1.0 mg.L-1), NAA (0; 1.0 mg.L-1) and CuSO4 (0; 1.25 mg.L-1). The L3 inbred line presented higher capacity for Type II callus formation on N6 medium content 10 mg.L-1 2,4-D. For the maturation of callus, absence of plant growth regulators and addition of CuSO4 allowed higher percentage of regeneration. During an experimental period of 28 days citric acid (CA) was tested as a growth promoter instead of antibiotics with replacement of commercial diet by rice polish (RP). Newly 240 hatched broiler chicks (Cobb 500) distributed into eight dietary groups (3 replicate cages having 10 birds in each), 1=Control (commercial diet), 2=Commercial diet+0.5% CA, 3=5.0% RP, 4=5.0% RP+ 0.5% CA, 5=10.0% RP, 6=10.0% RP+0.5% CA, 7=15.0% RP, 8=15.0% RP+0.5% CA. Diets were supplemented by acid insoluble ash (1.0% Celite) as marker. At the end, blood sample was collected from all birds. Total ash, mineral content and density of tibia were determined. Final body weight (g/b) of chicks were 1655, 1733, 1642, 1694, 1618, 1656, 1613 and 1631 g, respectively (P>0.05). Feed intake (g/bird) was 2359, 2419, 2432, 2433, 2524, 2494, 2519 and 2424 g, respectively (P>0.05). FCR varied (P<0.05) among the groups were 1.48, 1.44, 1.54, 1.49, 1.62, 1.55, 1.62 and 1.54, where better FCR was in CA groups comparison to non-CA groups. Retention of Ca, P and Mg increased in CA group’s comparison to non-CA groups but replacement of 5.0% commercial diet (with or without CA) caused higher retention level. Higher dressing percentage observed in CA group (65.4, 65.9 for group 2, 4) comparison to non-CA groups (63.8, 63.9 for groups 1, 3). Bone mineral concentration (total ash, Ca, P and Mg) slightly increased in CA groups (P>0.05). In general, replacement of a commercial diet by RP up to 15.00% would be possible maintaining growth performance of broiler where further supplementation of 0.5% CA showed more advantages by increasing mineral density of bone. Water management and irrigation conservation in calcareous sandy soil are of significant importance for sustaining agricultural production, especially in arid and semi-arid region that facing scarcity of water resources. The changes in hydro-physical characteristics of calcareous sand soil were investigated after date palm waste-derived biochar application in column trials. Significance of pyrolysis temperature (300 °C, 500 °C, and 700 °C), particle size [<0.5 mm (D0.5), 0.5–1 mm (D1), and 1–2 mm (D2)], and application rate (1%, 2.5%, and 5%) were studied. Variations in infiltration rate, intermittent evaporation, and saturated hydraulic conductivity as a function of aforementioned factors were investigated. After amending the top 10-cm soil layer with different biochar and application rates, the columns were subjected to six wetting and drying cycles by applying 25 cm3 tap water per week over a 6-week period. Overall, biochar application resulted in decreased saturated hydraulic conductivity, while improved cumulative evaporation. Specifically, biochar produced at 300 °C and 500 °C demonstrated 10.2% and 13.3% higher cumulative evaporation, respectively., whereas, biochar produced at 700 °C with 5% application rate resulted in decreased cumulative evaporation. Cumulative evaporation increased by 5.0%, 7.7% and, 7.8% for D0.5, D1 and D2 (mm) on average, respectively, as compared with the untreated soil. Thus, biochar with particle size 0.5–1 mm significantly improved hydro-physical properties when applied at 1%. Generally, using biochar produced at medium temperature and small particle size with appropriate application rates could improve the soil hydro-physical properties.

This exploratory study compared doses of ferucarbotran, a superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle, in sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) and quantified the SLN iron load by dose and localization. Eighteen females aged ≥20 years scheduled for an SLN biopsy with node-negative breast cancer were divided into two equal groups and administered either 1 mL or 0.5 mL ferucarbotran. Iron content was evaluated with a handheld magnetometer and quantification device. The average iron content was 42.8 µg (range, 1.3–95.0; 0.15% of the injected dose) and 21.9 µg (1.1–71.0; 0.16%) in the 1-mL and 0.5-mL groups, respectively (p = 0.131). The iron content of the closest SLN compared to the second SLN was 53.0 vs. 10.0 µg (19% of the injected dose) and 34.8 vs. 4.1 µg (11.1%) for the 1-mL and 0.5-mL groups, respectively (p = 0.001 for both). The magnetic field was high in both groups (average 7.30 µT and 6.00 µT in the 1-mL and 0.5-mL groups, respectively) but was not statistically significant (p = 0.918). The magnetic field and iron content were correlated (overall SLNs, p = 0.02; 1-mL, p = 0.014; 0.5-mL, p = 0.010). A 0.5-mL dose was sufficient for SLN identification. Primary and secondary SLNs could be differentiated based on iron content. Handheld magnetometers could be used to assess the SLN iron content.

Muskmelons (Cucumis melo L. cv. Superstar) were grown at two between-row spacings (1.5 m or 2.1 m) and four in-row spacings (0.6, 0.9, 1.2, or 1.5 m), corresponding to populations from 3074 to 10763 plants ha-1, to determine the influence of row spacing and population on melon growth and yield. The study was conducted at two sites in 1993, one in northern and one in southern Indiana. Numbers of flowers and early season vine growth were not significantly different between treatments. In southern Indiana, the number of fruit harvested per plot increased as in-row spacing decreased; means ranged from 5.2 fruit plot-1 for 0.6 m in-row spacing, to 4.7 fruit for 0.9 m in-row spacing, 3.9 fruit for 1.2 m in-row spacing, and 3.3 fruit for 1.5 m in-row spacing. Harvests were significantly earlier for the 0.6 m in-row spacing. Mean melon weight was significantly greater for 1.5 m in-row spacing, averaging 4.1 kg, compared to 3.8, 3.7, and 3.7 kg for 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2 m in-row spacings, respectively. Between-row spacing did not affect number or weight of melons. There were no significant interactions between in-row and between-row spacings.

Abstract The CLL4 trial evaluated 1st line treatment with F or FC among 375 CLL patients up to 65 years (Eichhorst et al., Blood, 2006). Updated follow-up (median 52.8 months (mo) for alive patients) revealed 50.4% events for progression-free survival (PFS) and 24.5% for overall survival (OS). Comparing the treatment arms, significant differences were observed in favor of FC for CR (19.9% vs 5.9%, p&lt;.001), CR+PR (94.7% vs 82.4%, p&lt;.001), and PFS (median 67.8 vs 43.7 mo, p=.002) but not for OS (median n.r. vs 84.6 mo, p=.191). The incidences of genomic aberrations by FISH (n=321) were 13q- 50.5%, 13q- single 36.0%, 11q- 21.1%, +12 13.6%, and 17p- 5.0%. No aberration was found in 25.9%. TP53 mutations (n=340) were observed in 8.8%. VH status (n=340) was unmutated in 64.3% and V3–21 was rearranged in 5.9%. ZAP70 (n=236) was &gt;20% in 37.7% and CD38 (n=259) was &gt;7% in 47.9%. β2-MG and TK (both n=261) were &gt;5 mg/L in 13.8% and &gt; 10U/L in 73.0%, respectively. The distributions of these biologic markers and the major clinical characteristics (age: median 59 (42–65) years, sex: 73.1% male, stage: Binet A 9.2%, B 55.4%, C 35.4%, LDH &gt; 250U/L: 39.2%, lymphocytes &gt; 50/nl: 57.1%, comorbidities &gt;1: 21.4%, and creatinine clearance were not significantly different between treatment arms. Outcome was analyzed for subgroups defined by the clinical and biologic parameters in univariate analyses for the entire population (i.e. both treatment arms combined). PFS was significantly shorter for 11q-, 17p- (Fig.1), TP53 mutation, elevated TK and LDH. OS was significantly shorter for the same parameters and unmutated VH, elevated β2-MG, and &gt;1 comorbidities. All except 2 patients with 17p- had TP53 mutations. There were 13 additional cases with TP53 mutation without 17p-. OS was similarly poor for TP53 mutation without 17p- as compared to 17p- and all other cases (OS at 48 mo: 25.9%, 21.4%, and 84.6%, respectively, p&lt;.001) (Fig. 2). To investigate specific treatment effects, the efficacy of F and FC was compared in subgroups defined by biologic markers. PFS was longer after FC only for the subgroups with unmutated VH (p=.005), no aberration (p=.010), 11q- (p=.017), unmutated TP53 (p=.001), CD38 &gt;7% (p=.011), and β2MG &lt;5mg/L (p=.009). OS was significantly longer after FC only in the subgroups with 11q- (p=.037), +12 (p=.044), and unmutated TP53 (p=.029). Multivariate analysis was performed by Cox regression with backward selection including all clinical and biologic parameters in addition to the treatment arms. Regarding PFS, independent prognostic factors were FC (HR 0.68, p=.047), TK (HR 1.62, p=.051), 11q- (HR 1.66, p=.015), and TP53 mutation (HR 4.16, p&lt;.001). Similarly, for OS independent factors were FC (HR 0.56, p=.033), TK (HR 2.79, p=.009), 11q- (HR 1.98, p=.015), and TP53 mutation (HR 11.61, p&lt;.001). If TP53 mutation was not included in the analyses, 17p- entered the model as significant factor (PFS: HR 3.60, p=.003, OS: HR 12.64, p&lt;.001). In summary, biologic parameters are the major determinants of outcome after 1st line treatment with F and FC in CLL. The overall improvement after FC as compared to F appears to result from specific treatment effects in distinct biologic subgroups. However, in comprehensive multivariate analysis, TP53 mutation, 11q-, and TK &gt; 10 remain predictors for PFS and OS independently of the improvement by FC. Alloy AA5182 contains coarse constituent particles and submicron dispersoids. While the former may cause particle stimulated nucleation (PSN) during primary recrystallization, the fine dispersoids may ‘arrest’ grain growth during subsequent annealing. Abnormal grain growth was observed after dissolution/coarsening of the dispersoids. Mainly S [{123}〈634〉] grains, but also some Brass [{011}〈112〉] and Cu [{112}〈111〉] grains, were observed to grow abnormally. Both the grain size and the grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) possibly played a role in the selection of the grains for abnormal grain growth. A dramatic increase in the number fraction of extremely low angle (1−5°) boundaries was observed with annealing, the increase being more at 470°C (when dispersoids were stable and grain growth was arrested more effectively) than at 500°C/530°C (when inhibition to grain growth was less). The nature of the CSL boundaries did not change significantly with annealing time/temperature.

BackgroundAtherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Chronic inflammation increases cardiovascular risk (CVR) in these patients [1]. Heart disease remains the most likely cause of death for women, and a higher risk is established than for men [2].ObjectivesTo compare six CVR algorithms with carotid ultrasound findings in women with RA and to identify the algorithm with the cutoff point with the best sensitivity for carotid plaque (CP) detection.MethodsCross-sectional, and descriptive study. Patients aged 40 to 75 years who met the ACR/EULAR 2010 classification criteria for the diagnosis of RA. Patients with a history of cardiovascular disease were excluded. CVR was calculated using 6 algorithms: ACC/AHA 2013, FRS-Lipids, FRS-BMI, RRS, QRISK3 and SCORE2. Carotid ultrasound was performed on all study participants, and the presence of CP, defined as diffuse carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) ≥1.2 mm or focal thickness ≥0.5 mm, was assessed. Subclinical atherosclerosis was defined as the presence of CP or a cIMT ≥0.8mm. An ROC curve analysis was performed and the cutoff points for each algorithm were determined using the Youden index. Area under the curve (AUC) sensitivity, specificity, and likelihood ratios (LR) were calculated. A value ofp≤0.05 was considered statistically significant.ResultsA total of 158 women with a diagnosis of RA were included. The prevalence of CP was 32.3%. Results are shown in Figure 1.ConclusionThe FRS-Lipids algorithm was one of the best algorithms for the detection of CP in women, with the best sensitivity compared to the other algorithms, however, in the low-risk group none of the algorithms proved to be sufficiently effective in predicting CVR. Methanothrix concilii, which is a mesophilic, aceticlastic methanogen, required 6.8 mM inorganic nitrogen for maximal growth rate in a mineral salts – vitamins medium containing 73.5 mM acetic acid. Cysteine hydrochloride, sodium sulfide, or glutathione at optimum concentrations of 6.0, 1.0, and 12.0 mM, respectively, served as the sole source of sulphur for growth. Of the 10 vitamins tested, only biotin, thiamine hydrochloride, and p-aminobenzoic acid stimulated growth. The optimum iron and nickel concentrations were 1–5 and 0.1 μM, respectively. Both calcium and magnesium, at an optimum concentration of 250 and 500 μM, respectively, were essential for growth. The optimum concentrations of manganese, cobalt, and zinc, in conjunction with one another, were 2.5, 10.0, and 5.0 μM, respectively.

After prolonged exposure of PCZ at higher test concentrations (50 and 500 μg L−1), oxidative stress was apparent as reflected by the significant higher ROS levels in fish gill, as well as the significant inhibition of SOD and CAT activities. In addition, Na+-K+-ATPase activities were significantly lower than those of the control with increasing PCZ concentration and prolonged exposure period. The results of this study indicate that chronic exposure to PCZ has altered multiple physiological indices in fish gill; however, before these parameters are used as unique biomarkers for monitoring residual pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments, more detailed laboratory experiments need to be performed.

AbstractRelationships between photoperiod and cycles of voluntary food intake (VFI) and maintenance energy requirements (MER) were determined in Soay rams, subjected to a 6-month photoperiodic regime. Food was offered ad libitum (no. = 5) or at a predicted maintenance level (no. = 5). All rams demonstrated 6-month cycles of VFI, growth and reproductive status. Metabolizable energy intake (MEI) was greatest in rams given food ad libitum (666 (s.e. 21.7) kJ/kg metabolic live weight (M0·75) and food-restricted (528 (s.e. 12.2) kJ/kg M0·75) rams during sexual quiescence. Conversely, MEI was minimal (ad libitum, 289 (s.e. 8.4) kJ/kg M0·75; restricted, 428 (s.e. 8.1) kJ/kg M0·75) during the rut. Distinct cycles of heat production (HP) accompanied changes in MEL Changes in HP were similar (P > 0·05) for both groups (ad libitum, 520 (s.e. 22.1) to 394 (s.e. 9.2) kJ/kg M0·75; restricted 503 (s.e. 14.0) to 407 (s.e. 17.5) kJ/kg M0·75) and therefore energy retention varied more (P < 0·015) when rams were given food ad libitum (ad libitum, 131 (s.e. 43-1) to -106 (s.e. 38.2) kJ/kg M0·75; restricted, 78·0 (s.e. 27.1) to -53.0 (s.e. 38.2) kJ/ kg M0·75). Apparent digestibility of dietary energy varied inversely with MEI (P < 0·01). MERs ranged from 524 (s.e. 35.0) kJ/kg M0·75 to 401 (s.e. 27.3) kJ/kg M0·75, a proportional fluctuation of ±0·13. Changes in metabolic rate preceded those in appetite, suggesting a causal relationship.

The Cu doped ZnO photocatalysts were prepared on ZnO substrate modified with copper nitrate by thermal shock method with different ratio % molar Cu : Zn = 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 5.0 in order to study the impacts of copper content on the photocatalytic activity of ZnO under both UV and Vis light irradiation. The crystal structure, morphology bulk and surface were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Their photocatalytic activities were studied via time-dependent degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution. The results exhibit that crystal structure and morphology of Cu doped ZnO photocatalysts is not modified significally than ZnO original but surface charateristicschanged greatly. The photocatalyst was doped with copper content under 2% showed formation of Cu species. These samples perform photocatalytic activity higher than ZnO. The CuNZO-0.05-500 had the highest rate constants for methylene blue degradation (kUV = 6,901 h-1, kVIS = 0,224 h-1), which are about 2.2 times and 1.3 times higher than unmodified ZnO under UV light and Vis light, respectively. However, the CuNZO-5.0-500 which had the formation of CuO phase and unchangeable ZnO's surface has photocatalytic activity similar to pure ZnO.
