In order to study the physiology of perception of saline stress in ‘Common Sunki’ mandarin hybrids, an experiment was realized in a greenhouse at the CCTA - UFCG, Pombal, PB, Brazil,using using a randomized block design with a 2x4 factorial , with two levels of salinity (0.3 and 4.0 dS m-1) and four ‘Common Sunki’ mandarin hybrids (1 - TSKC x CTARG–019; 2 - TSKC x CTSW–028; 3 - TSKC x CTSW–033 and 4 - TSKC x CTSW-041), with three replications and four plants per plot. The plants were grown hydroponically and 90 days after sowing, a saline water solution was applied on rootstocks and evaluations of gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence were carried out 24 and 48 hours after saline stress. Changes on physiologic conditions were observed in the hybrids TSKC x CTSW - 028, TSKC x CTSW - 033 and TSKC x CTSW - 041 during the first 24 hours of saline stress. Fot the hybrid TSKC x CTARG – 019, changes were observed after 48 hours od salinity stress. According to salinity tolerance, the hybrids could be classified as follows: TSKC x CTARG - 019 > TSKC x CTSW - 028 = TSKC x CTSW – 041 > TSKC x CTSW - 033.

Background: Return to play and player satisfaction have been quite high after ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction (UCLR); however, there has been little reported on how outcomes are affected by surgical technique, graft type, and tear characteristics. Purpose: To evaluate surgical techniques, graft type, and tear characteristics on Major League Baseball (MLB) performance after UCLR. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. Methods: MLB pitchers who underwent primary UCLR at a single institution were included. Tear characteristics included tear location, tear grade, and acuity. Surgical technique and graft type were also collected. Pitching performance statistics, including earned run average (ERA), walks and hits per innings pitched (WHIP), innings pitched, and fastball velocity were evaluated 3 years before and after UCLR. Results: Forty-six MLB pitchers were identified as having primary UCLR. Return to play was 96%, with 82% returning to MLB play. Technique performed showed no difference in performance. As compared with pitchers with gracilis grafts, pitchers with palmaris grafts were younger ( P = .043), played longer after surgery ( P = .012), and returned to play at 100% (35 of 35) versus 82% (9 of 11, P = .010). When compared with pitchers with proximal tears, pitchers with distal tears pitched at higher velocity (93.0 vs 90.6 mph, P = .023) and had better performance before surgery (ERA, P = .003; WHIP, P = .021); however, those with proximal tears improved to match this performance and velocity after reconstruction. As compared with those having partial tears, pitchers with complete tears played longer after surgery (5.9 vs 4.0 years, P = .033), had a better ERA before injury ( P = .041), and had better WHIP ( P = .037) and strikeouts per 9 innings ( P = .025) after reconstruction. Pitchers with chronic tears had a significant improvement in postoperative ERA, from 4.49 to 3.80 ( P = .040). Conclusion: Technique performed and graft type used did not affect performance; however, pitchers with palmaris grafts returned at a higher rate than those with gracilis grafts. Distal tears occurred in pitchers with greater velocity and better performance before injury, yet pitchers with proximal tears matched this performance after reconstruction. Pitchers with complete tears played longer after reconstruction. Pitchers who had partial tears had worse performance before injury and after reconstruction, and those with chronic tears saw a significant improvement in ERA with reconstruction.

Background Tolvaptan is converted to major metabolites including three monohydroxylates (DM-4110, DM-4111 and DM-4119), an oxidate (MOP-21826) and a carboxylate (DM-4103) in humans. This study developed a simultaneous quantitative method for tolvaptan and its five major metabolites in human plasma using liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. Methods Deproteinized plasma specimens using acetonitrile were separated using a 3- μm particle size octadecylsilyl column with 250 mm length and a simple linear gradient program at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min with a total run time of 15 min. This method was applied to the determination of plasma samples collected from 20 heart failure patients treated with 3.75–15 mg tolvaptan. Results No interfering peak was found in drug-free plasma specimens. The calibration curves of tolvaptan, DM-4110, DM-4111, DM-4119, MOP-21826 and DM-4103 were linear over the concentration ranges of 3.125–1000, 0.3125–100, 1.25–400, 0.625–200, 0.125–40 and 31.25–10,000 ng/mL, respectively. Their pretreatment recovery rates and matrix factors were 94.1–113.9% and 86.9–108.0%, respectively. The intra- and inter-day accuracies and imprecisions were 91.6–106.5% and 0.9–10.9%, respectively, for all analytes. The plasma concentration ranges of tolvaptan, DM-4110, DM-4111, DM-4119, MOP-21826 and DM-4103 were 9.37–280, 1.91–16.3, 3.43–88.9, 1.43–10.4, 0.160–1.01 and 40.2–1471 ng/mL, respectively, in heart failure patients. Conclusions This validated method with acceptable analytical performance can be utilized for evaluating the pharmacokinetics of oral tolvaptan, including the determination of its major metabolites, in heart failure patients.

410 Background: Based on interim results from the phase 3 KEYNOTE-045 (NCT02256436) study comparing pembro v investigator’s choice of chemotherapy (chemo), pembro was approved for the treatment of locally advanced or metastatic UC that has progressed during or after a platinum-containing regimen. Updated results after 2 years of follow-up are presented. Methods: Eligible patients (histologically or cytologically confirmed UC, progression after platinum, ECOG PS 0-2, measurable disease per RECIST v1.1, ≤2 lines of systemic therapy) were randomly assigned 1:1 to pembro 200 mg Q3W or investigator’s choice of paclitaxel 175 mg/m2 Q3W, docetaxel 75 mg/m2 Q3W, or vinflunine 320 mg/m2 Q3W. Primary efficacy end points were OS and PFS (RECIST v1.1, blinded central review). ORR (RECIST v1.1, blinded central review) was a secondary end point. Results: As of Oct 26, 2017, among the 542 enrolled patients (pembro, 270; chemo, 272), median follow-up was 27.7 mo. Median OS was significantly longer with pembro v chemo (10.3 v 7.3 mo; HR, 0.70; P < 0.0002). OS benefit with pembro v chemo was seen in all PD-L1 expression subgroups (HR: combined positive score [CPS] < 1, 0.82; CPS ≥1, 0.58; CPS < 10, 0.75; CPS ≥10, 0.56) and was maintained regardless of age, ECOG PS, prior therapy, liver metastases, baseline hemoglobin, time from last chemo, histology, risk factor group, and choice of chemo. PFS was not different between arms (2.1 v 3.3 mo; HR, 0.96; P = 0.32). ORR was higher with pembro v chemo (21.1% v 11.0%). Median duration of response was longer with pembro (not reached [1.6+–30.3+ mo] v 4.4 mo [1.4+–29.9+ mo]), and a greater proportion of responses lasted ≥12 mo (68% v 35%) as assessed by Kaplan-Meier method. Fewer patients with pembro v chemo experienced a treatment-related adverse event of any grade (62.0% v 90.6%) and a grade ≥3 adverse event (16.5% v 50.2%). Conclusions: Results observed over 2 years of follow-up, including OS benefit and superior safety with pembro v chemo, were consistent with the interim analyses that led to the approval of pembro in locally advanced or metastatic UC that progressed during or after platinum-based chemotherapy. The objective of the research titled ‘Innovation and Technology of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Coconut Sugar Business in Thailand 4.0’ is to study the level of innovation and technology of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the coconut sugar business in Samut Songkhram Province. This research is the Mixed Methods Research and the populations of this research consisted of entrepreneurs and executives as well as those who engage in the development of innovation and technology of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the coconut sugar business in Samut Songkhram Province.The results showed that SMEs’ innovation and technology consisted of 3components including Innovation and Technology in Learning, Innovation and Technology in Communication and Innovation and Technology in Operational Support. Innovation and Technology in Communication was ranked as No. 1with the highest Mean, it was found that there are 3 areas of innovation and technology to be studied, including Innovation and Technology in Learning, Innovation and Technology in Communication and Innovation and Technology in Operational Support. Based on the data analysis for the rating scale on the innovation and technology, it was found that the rating scale on communication was ranked as No. 1 with the highest Mean (x̄= 4.40S.D. = 0.43), No. 2 was the innovation and technology in learning with the highest Mean (x̄= 4.38 S.D. = 0.44) and No. 3 was the innovation and technology on operational support with the highest Mean (x̄= 4.33 S.D. = .047). All variables are statistically significant influences.

The syntheses and room-temperature single-crystal X-ray structural characterization of binuclear 1 : 2 adducts formed between silver(I) (pseudo-)halides, AgX, and triphenylarsine, AsPh3, for X = Cl, Br, I, SCN (1)–(4), are described. The chloride (1), obtained from 2-methylpyridine, is triclinic, P-1, a 10·410(2), b 12·716(2), c 14·196(6) Å, α 113·38(2), β 109·41(2), γ 75·08(1)°, Z = 1 (dimer); conventional R on F was 0·037 for No 3979 independent ‘observed’ (I > 3σ(I)) reflections. The bromide (2a), obtained from 2,6-dimethylpyridine, and iodide (3), obtained from a mixture of AgI/saturated KI in MeOH solutions, are isomorphous, monoclinic, P 21/c a≈ 24·2, b ≈ 13·9, c ≈ 20·2 Å, β ≈ 109·5°, Z = 4 dimers; R was 0·046 and 0·044 for No 5670 and 6039 respectively. The thiocyanate (4) has a similar cell, a 24·12(1), b 12·558(8), c 23·244(4) Å, β 110·11(3)°, Z = 4 dimers, R being 0·044 for No 7956; one of the thiocyanate ligands (which bridge in Ag-SCN-Ag mode) is disordered. A second polymorph of the bromide (2b) (from a mixture of AgBr/saturated KBr in H2O) is also monoclinic, P 21/c, a 14·121(8), b 25·577(3), c 21·968(2) Å, β 125·54(3)°, Z = 4 dimers (R was 0·047 for No 5715). Ag–As range between 2·568(1) and 2·633(1) Å throughout the series; in the isomorphous bromide and iodide, values increase slightly: 2·578(1)–2·611(1), cf. 2·601(2)-2·633(1) Å respectively. Ag–X are 2·568(2)-2·670(2) (Cl); 2·688(2)–2·715(2) (Br); 2·828(2)–2·856(1) Å (I); Ag-S, N for the ordered SCN group are 2·646(3), 2·255(6) Å. A redetermination of improved precision (R 0·035, No 6030) is reported for the triphenylphosphine/thiocyanate analogue. The far-infrared spectra of [(Ph3As)2Ag(µ-X)2Ag (AsPh3)2] show v(AgX) bands at 185, 145 (X = Cl), 145, 130, 106 (X = Br) and 121 cm-1 (X = I). The splittings and band widths reflect a decrease in the degree of distortion of the Ag(µ-X)2Ag units from a symmetrically bridged structure from X = Cl to I.

PURPOSE: We studied the effects of combined exercise (CE) on frailty index, physical function, carotid artery (CA) distensibility, and beta-stiffness in pre-frailty older women.METHODS: A total of 27 pre-frailty older women (aged 70.6±4.0 years), who were divided into a control group (n=13) and a supervised CE group (n=14). The 12-week CE program (resistance and aerobic exercise) consisted of sessions 50 minutes in length 3 days per week under the supervision of an exercise specialist. Frailty index, blood pressure, physical function, and CA function were assessed.RESULTS: Frailty status showed a significantly (p=.001) group×time interaction. Also, physical activity (p=.019), walking speed (p=.049), and right grip strength (p=.040) showed a significantly group×time interaction. In the CE group, physical activity, walking speed, and right grip strength were significantly (p=.001, p<.001, p<.001) increased, and frailty state was significantly (p<.001) decreased 12-week. Left CA distensibility (p=.032), and beta-stiffness (p=.033) showed a significantly group×time interaction. In the CE group, CA distensibility was significantly (p<.05) increased, and CA beta-stiffness was significantly (p<.01) decreased after 12-week.CONCLUSIONS: In pre-frail older adult women, CE effectively improves frailty index, CA stiffness, and distensibility.

A field study determined an optimal approach for the remote sensing of a pine needle blight of unknown cause that occurs frequently in the southeastern United States. Needle spectral reflectance was measured in five pairs of slash pines (Pinuselliottii Engelm. var. elliottii), each comprising a blighted and a nonblighted tree. Reflectance of blighted needles generally was greater within the 400–700 nm wavelength range and less in the 720–850 nm range compared with nonblighted needles (p ≤ 0.050). The relative change in reflectance, or reflectance sensitivity to the blight, was greatest near 680 nm. As predicted by the reflectance sensitivity, a black and white digital image at 680 ± 5 nm revealed strong contrast of a blighted compared with a nonblighted tree; the blighted canopy was nearly white in the image, while the nonblighted canopy was dark grey. Contrasts were much less at 560 ± 5, 694 ± 3, and 700 ± 5 nm, in the panchromatic visible spectrum (410–740 nm), and at 760 ± 5 nm. Remote sensing of southeastern pine forests at 680 ± 5 nm ultimately could provide regional estimates of blight occurrence and distribution, and thus contribute to determining its cause.

Abstract A growing number of in vitro studies suggest that recombinant human stem cell factor (SCF) is capable of augmenting the proliferative capacity of human hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) and stem cells (HSC). We further evaluated this biologic effect by analyzing the response of bone marrow (BM) HPCs and HSCs to the administration of SCF in eight patients with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer who were enrolled in an ongoing phase I study. SCF was administered for 14 days by daily subcutaneous injection at dosages of 10, 25, or 50 micrograms/kg/d. BM CD34+ HLA-DR+ and CD34+ HLA-DR- CD15- cells, previously shown by our laboratory to be enriched for various classes of differentiated and primitive HPCs, respectively, were quantitated in BM samples on day 0 (pretreatment) and day 15 (posttreatment). These CD34+ HLA-DR+ and CD34+ HLA-DR- CD15- cells were then isolated by cell- sorting and assayed for several classes of HPCs, including the high-- proliferative potential colony-forming cell (HPP-CFC), the burst- forming unit--megakaryocyte (BFU-MK), and the long-term BM culture-- initiating cell (LTBMC-IC). SCF administration resulted in a 3.3-fold (range, 1.4- to 18.8-fold; P = .018) increase in the absolute numbers of CD34+ cells, a 3.7-fold (range, 1.2- to 8.2-fold; P = .028) increase in the absolute numbers of CD34+ HLA-DR+ cells, and a 2.4-fold (range, 1.1- to 29.3-fold; P = .010) increase in the absolute numbers of CD34+ HLA-DR- CD15- cells. Following the infusion of SCF, a statistically significant increase in the absolute numbers of HPP-CFC (P = .018), BFU- MK (P = .046), CFU-granulocyte, erythrocyte, monocyte, megakaryocyte (CFU-GEMM: P = .043), BFU-erythrocyte (BFU-E; P = .043), CFU- granulocyte, macrophage (CFU-GM; P = .045), and CFU-megakaryocyte (CFU- MK; P = .028) per milliliter of marrow was observed. Stromal cell-free LTBMCs supplemented with SCF and interleukin-3 (IL-3), initiated with CD34+ HLA-DR- CD15- cells obtained on day 0, produced viable cells for 9.6 weeks, compared with 11.5 weeks for LTBMCs initiated with CD34+ HLA- DR- CD15- cells obtained on day 15. Cumulative cellular production by LTBMCs initiated with day 15 CD34+ HLA-DR- CD15- cells was statistically greater than that by day 0 LTBMCs (P = .031). These same cultures produced CFU-GM for 6.3 weeks (day 0) versus 9 weeks (day 15).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

rev2021 was the first edition of the conference on Resource Efficient Vehicles, held online on 14-16 June 2021. This vehicle-centric conference aims to bring together participants from academia, industry and public agencies to discuss research from all relevant fields connected to resource efficiency in all motorised modes of transport and interdependent surrounding systems. The theme of this multidisciplinary conference is Resolving Functional Conflicts in Vehicle Design, a theme explored through topics including modelling for multifunctional design; making trade-offs; efficient use of materials and space; integrating new solutions; transforming the product system; transforming the vehicle-transport system; sustainable design; and early-stage design. The 2021 edition of the conference consisted of 40 selected papers for presentation at the conference, complemented with four workshops, five keynote lectures from invited speakers, and a concluding panel discussion with four invited participants. It was organised by the Centre for ECO2 Vehicle Design at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

La insuficiencia cardiaca (HF) es una de las principales causas de muerte a nivel mundial y su incidencia irá aumentando con el tiempo. Durante la HF, la disfunción del sistema nervioso simpático (SNS) se relaciona con mayores tasas de mortalidad, y al día no se cuentan con estrategias efectivas para el tratamiento de la insuficiencia cardiaca no-isquémica (HFpEF). Se ha identificado que las neuronas catecolaminérgicas del troncoencéfalo en la zona rostral ventrolateral (C1 RVLM) juegan un rol fundamental en el desbalance autonómico y en la disfunción cardiorrespiratoria en la HFpEF. Sin embargo, los mecanismos celulares y moleculares responsables de su sobreactivación durante este síndrome no han sido estudiados con profundidad. Se ha demostrado que la señalización de estrés de retículo (ERS) participa de forma importante en la sobre- activación de núcleos centrales de control del SNS en HF isquémica, sin embargo, se desconoce si existe ERS a nivel central durante la HFpEF. Por lo tanto, el objetivo del presente trabajo de tesis fue determinar la presencia y contribución de la ERS en la RVLM en los desórdenes cardio respiratorios y autonómicos en ratas con HFpEF. Se indujo HFpEF de forma quirúrgica en ratas Sprague-Dawley, a las cuales se les administró TUDCA (ácido tauroursodeoxicólico, un inhibidor característico de ERS) de forma intracerebroventricular durante 4 semanas una vez establecida la enfermedad. Comparadas con las ratas HFpEF tratadas con vehículo, la administración de TUDCA en HFpEF (HF+Veh vs. HF+TUDCA, p<0.05) previno la hipertrofia cardiaca (HW/BW 4.4±0.3 vs. 4.0±0.1mg/g;) y produjo una marcada restauración de la función diastólica (EDP: 4.9±0.6 vs. 3.7±0.4mmHg). Además, la administración de TUDCA mejoró el control autonómico cardiaco (LF/HFHRV ratio 3.02±0.29 vs. 1.14±0.24), redujo la incidencia de arritmias (141.5±26.7 vs. 35.67±12.5 eventos/h;) y normalizó los desórdenes respiratorios (Apneas: 11.83±2.26 vs. 4.33±1.80 eventos/h). El análisis molecular reveló un aumento en la expresión de biomarcadores de ERS (aumento de 3 veces en la expresión de BiP, CHOP y sXBP1), neuroinflamación (7 veces TNF-α y 3 veces IL-1β) y del Sistema Renina-Angiotensina (6 veces AT1 y 9 veces NOX2) en la RVLM en ratas con HFpEF y su consecuente disminución tras el tratamiento con TUDCA. En conjunto, los resultados sugieren un efecto beneficioso de TUDCA sobre la fisiopatología de la HFpEF, lo que podría significar una nueva estrategia terapéutica para futuros estudios pilotos.

The Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) sequence is common to fibrinogen (Fg), fibronectin (Fn) and von Willebrand Factor (vWF). RGD-containing peptides compete for binding of these adhesive proteins to platelet membrane GPIIb/IIIa and inhibit thrombin-induced platelet aggregation as does an unrelated dodecapeptide from the γ Fg COOH terminus (γFg 400-411). We compared in flowing blood the effect of γ Fg 400-411 and of 3 synthetic peptides derived from the sequence of human vWF upon platelet adhesion to collagen. The 3 vWF peptides (13 or 18 aminoacids) contained an RGD sequence in the NH2 (peptide 03), central (peptide 07) or COOH (peptide 02) portions. Collagen was coated onto plastic coverslips and exposed in a parallel-plate perfusion chamber to reconstituted human blood at a shear rate of 2,600 s™1 for 3 min at 37°C. Perfusates contained physiological concentrations of 51 Cr-platelets and red cells in either citrated autologous plasma or modified Tyrode buffer containing 4% human albumin ; in the latter case, the collagen-coated coverslips were preincubated with normal plasma or purified human vWF prior to perfusion. Platelet-collagen interactions were estimated by radioactivity counting and quantitative morphometry. RGD peptides 02, 03 and 07 inhibited platelet-collagen interactions in a dose-dependent manner. With peptide 07, deposition of 51 Cr-platelets decreased from 283.8 ± 32.5 × 105/cm2 (mean ± SEM, n = 3) with buffer to 169.6 ± 33.0 in the presence of 50 μM peptide (p < 0.05), 133.7 ± 26.4 with 150 uM (p <0.012) and 101.8 ± 27.1 with 300 uM (p <0.005). The inhibitory effect of γ Fg 400-411 upon platelet deposition was less significant than that of the RGD peptides at 50 and 150 uM concentrations (224.4 ± 39.8, N.S. and 139.5 ± 55.3, p < 0.05, respectively). RGD peptide 07 also inhibited in a dose-dependent way both platelet adhesion to collagen and thrombus growth. Similar results were observed with peptides 02 and 03, indicating that the position of the RGD sequence is not critical. No synergetic effect between RGD and γFg 400-411 peptides was observed. These results with vWF peptides confirm that GPIIb/IIIa is involved not only In platelet aggregation (thrombus growth) but also in vWF-mediated platelet adhesion to collagen.

In our study, we determined the length of the femoral arteries, on a CT Revolution Evo 128 slice machine – General Electric, from their point of origin to the deep femoral artery origin, on a number of 48 cases (35 male cases and 13 female cases) on each of the two femoral arteries, right and left. The length was determined considering gender, and a comparison between the lengths of both femoral arteries was made, noting existing length differences between them. The left femoral artery length was found between 18,1 and 66,1 mm, in men being between 18,1 and 66,1 mm, and in women, between 24,1 and 41,2 mm. The right femoral artery length was between 15,7-53,6 mm, in men being from 15,7 to 49,1 mm, and in women from 16,4 to 26,4 mm. Comparing both femoral artery lengths, we noticed that in 23 cases, the right femoral artery was longer than the left one by 0,3-19,3 mm, in male cases the right femoral artery being longer in 20 cases, with differences between 0,3-13,5 mm, and in female cases, it was found longer in 3 cases, with differences found between 0,3 and 19,3 mm. The left femoral artery was longer than the right one by 0,4-31,1 mm, in 15 male cases with differences from 0,4 to 31,1 mm, and in 10 female cases, the differences were between 4,0-19,3 mm.

AbstractObservational records provide a strong basis for constraining sea ice models within a narrow range of climate conditions. Given current trends away from these conditions, models need to be tested over a wider range of climate states. The past provides many such examples based on paleoclimate data, including abrupt tipping points. However, the millennial-duration of typical paleoclimatesimulations necessitates balancing the inclusion and sophistication of model processes against computational cost. We investigate the impact on climate mean states and variability of introducing sea ice dynamics into the simplified general circulation model PlaSim-LSG [1-3].Considering the technical constraints of PlaSim-LSG, we choose to integrate a modied version of the MITgcm's dynamical sea ice component [4, 5] into the model setup. We adapt the component to the structure and parallelization scheme of PlaSim-LSG, validate the physical consistency and stability of the component, and evaluate the impact of sea ice dynamics onto the simulated climate from decadal to millennial time scales. Specifically, we compare climatologies, variability and scaling of the extended model to control simulations of the preexisting setups, and quantify how additional sea ice dynamics affect well-known climatic biases of the PlaSim model family.With our extended PlaSim-LSG model we aim at capturing the key small-scale sea ice processes that are important to past climate tipping points while maintaining model efficiency for millennial simulations. Sea ice is a key component of coupled atmosphere-ocean processes that led to large-amplitude, abrupt climate variability in the past [6-8]. Recent experimental and theoretical studies of heat-recirculating combustors have demonstrated the importance of thermal conduction through the structure of the combustor on its performance. In particular, this solid-phase heat conduction inevitably degrades performance via transfer of heat out of the reaction zone to the surrounding structure, which is then lost to ambient. This in turn leads to a reduction of reaction temperature and thus sustainable reaction rates. By use of platinum-based catalysts in spiral counterflow “Swiss roll” heat-recirculating combustors, we have been able to sustain nearly complete combustion of propane-air mixtures at temperatures less than 150 °C using combustors built with titanium (thermal conductivity (k) of 7 W/m°C). Such low temperatures suggest that high-temperature polymers (e.g. polyimides, k ∼ 0.3 W/m°C) may be employed as a combustor material. With this motivation, a polyimide Swiss roll combustor was built using CNC milling and tested over a range of Reynolds numbers with propane fuel and Pt catalyst. The combustor survived prolonged testing at temperatures up to 450 °C. Reynolds numbers as low as 2 supported combustion, with thermal power as low as 3 watts and temperatures as low as 72 °C. These initial results suggest that polymer combustors may prove more practical for meso- or microscale thermochemical devices due to their lower thermal conductivity and ease of manufacturing. Applications to electric power generation via single-chamber solid oxide fuel cells are discussed.

One of the main advantages of IGCC technology is that it is the only form of power generation that is compatible with pre-combustion carbon capture. Part 2 of this paper will thus focus on analyzing pre-combustion CCS, utilizing both sour-shift and sweet-shift processes and comparing them to each other and to the results of post-combustion CCS from Part 1. Pre-combustion CCS plants are smaller than post-combustion ones, and usually require 25% less energy for CCS due to their compact size for processing fuel flow only under higher pressure (450 psi), versus processing the combusted gases at near-atmospheric pressure. For pre-combustion CCS, sour-shift appears to be superior both economically and thermally to sweet-shift in the current study. Sour-shift is always cheaper, (by a difference of about $600/kW and $0.02-$0.03/kW-hr), easier to implement, and also 2–3 percentage points more efficient. Adding biomass to the system always reduces the emissions and can even make a plant carbon-negative with as little as 10% biomass by weight. In addition, the efficiency will improve (0.7 points) and power output will also improve (∼1%–3% more) for up to 10% biomass ratio (BMR) for the right kind of biomass that has been properly pretreated. Beyond 10% BMR, however, the efficiency begins to drop due to the rising pretreatment costs, but the system itself still remains more efficient than from using coal alone (between 0.2–0.3 points on average). The economic difference is fairly marginal, but the trend is inversely proportional to the efficiency, with CoE decreasing by 0.5 cents/kW-hr from 0%–10% BMR and rising 2.5 cents/kW-hr from 10%–50% BMR. Finally, the CO2 removal cost for sour-shift is around $20/ton, whereas sweet-shift’s cost is around $30/ton, which is much cheaper than that of post-combustion CCS from Part 1: about $60-$70/ton.

Blood is hypercoagulable following GI haemorrhage [1], and vascular thrombosis has been reported to be the main cause of death [2]. To study the relationship between coagulation and clinical outcome, Impedance Clotting Time (ICT) wac measured daily using the Biobridge [1] and clinical outcome prospectively recorded in 125 patients with acute severe GI haemorrhage.Mean (±se mean) ICT on admission was markedly shortened at 4.8±0.2 mins (normal range 8-12 mins) (p<0.001, t-Cest). Sixty patients received blood transfusion within 24 hours resulting in significantly prolonged ICT of 6.2±0.4 mins compared to 4.0±0.3 mins in the 56 not transfused (p<0.01). In 23 patients who rebled, the ICT at 24 hours of 6.7±0.4 mins demonstrated reduced hypercoagulability. Twenty of these 23 patients had bee:: transfused prior to rebleeding, a significantly greater proportion than in those who did not rebleed (p<0.00l). Six patients died, 3 of myocardial infarction, 1 of stroke, and 2 of continued haemorrhage. Mean ICT in the 4 patients dying from thrombotic vascular disease was 2.3±0.1 mins although 2 had also rebled.Clinical outcome in GI haemorrhage is strongly related to coagulation changes. We investigated changes in sulfated proteoglycan (PG) and sulfated protein synthesis during megakaryocyte (MK) maturation in vivo by characterizing the (35S)-labeled molecules in MKs and platelets (PLTs) obtained daily from 3 hr to 5 days after injection of guinea pigs with (35S)sulfate. Radioactivity in macromolecules was maximal in MKs 3 hr and in PLTs 3 days after the injection. The cells were solubilized in 8M urea/50mM Tris/0.2% Triton X-100/0.1M NaCl, and PGs and sulfoproteins were separated by DEAE-Sephacel chromatography. PGs (65% of cell 35s) were eluted as two fractions, one (PG-1, 87%) with 4M Gdn HC1 and another (PG-2, 13%) with 4M Gdn HCl/2% TX-100. The Kav of PLT PG-1 on Sepharose CL-6B shifted gradually from 0.18 to 0.10 from 1-5 days after (35S) injection, and the smaller and larger PG-1 species were resolved on SDS-PAGE by fluorography. The size of PG-1 molecules was a function of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) chain length. The appearance of the different size PG-1 molecules in PLTs was accounted for by their disappearance from MKs over the same time period. Thus the size of the PG-1 synthesized by MKs decreased with MK maturation. The (35S)-PG-2 appeared in PLTs only 2-3 days after (35S) injection, had Kav 0.07 on CL-6B, but had GAGs of the same average size as those of PG-1. The hydrophobic character of PG-2 suggests that it might be the membrane PG. PG-1 and PG-2 were separated by SDS-PAGE and identified by fluorography. The core proteins of PG-1 and PG-2 were obtained by chondroitinase digestion and identified by SDS-PAGE and fluorography. The GAGs of PG-1 and PG-2 were almost entirely chondroitin-6-sulfate. The average size of PG-1 was 200,000 and its GAGs about 45,000.The sulfated proteins (20-25% of total cell 35S) eluted in the wash-through of the DEAE-Sephacel column and with 0.23M NaCl. Their isoelectric points were 4.0-6.5. They eluted as a small peak near the V0 and a major broad peak from Kav 0.3-0.6 on CL-6B columns, and could be identified as at least 8 distinct bands on SDS-PAGE by fluorography. Digestion with NaOH/NaBH4, Pronase or papain released small (35S)-labeled fragments, and the (35S) appeared to be associated with oligosaccharides. The sulfoproteins appeared in PLTs primarily 2-4 days after (35S) injection, and different proteins were labeled at different time points.

A prevalência mundial da Hepatite C é superior a 185 milhões de indivíduos infectados, cerca de 3% da população mundial. Estima-se uma incidência superior a 4 milhões de novos casos por ano (2-3% da população mundial). A hepatite C é uma doença com expressividade epidemiológica no Brasil, onde o paciente evolui, na maioria dos casos, para um quadro crônico grave. O tratamento da hepatite C envolve a utilização, por um período longo, de medicamentos de alto custo a nível ambulatorial, onde o sucesso depende em muito da adesão do paciente às recomendações da equipe de saúde. OBJETIVOS: O presente trabalho é de caráter exploratório e descritivo com o objetivo de estimar a prevalência do vírus da hepatite C (HCV) na população do município de Guaçuí, ES; METODOS: baseando-se na análise e quantificação de resultados de testes rápidos anti-HCV produzidos a partir da campanha de prevenção e erradicação da Hepatite C promovida pelo Rotary Club de Guaçuí, Distrito 4410 – ES. RESULTADOS: Entre os 216 voluntários da campanha observou a prevalência de hepatite C em 04 (1,85%) dos participantes, onde os mesmos apresentaram anti-HCV positivo com idade média de 39 anos, variando de 23 a 61 anos, obtendo a predominância no gênero masculino. CONCLUSÃO: A soroprevalência encontrada na população voluntária da campanha é compatível quando comparada com o índice nacional e da região sudeste. Este estudo poderá contribuir para alertar sobre a importância do agravo, a necessidade de conscientizar a população para a existência de projetos que visam contribuir para o diagnóstico precoce, tratamento e erradicação da Hepatite C.

A role for the Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF) has been suggested in the abnormal proliferation of bone marrow fibroblasts occuring during myelofibrosis. To investigate this hypothesis, human bone marrow fibroblasts were isolated, and the cultures were characterized by immunofluorescent staining and electron microscopy. Electron microscopy eliminated the presence of endothelial cells by the absence of Weibel-Palade-Bodies. A positive intra and extra cellular antifibro-nectin staining was observed by immunofluorescent staining. The cultured cells didn’t show any labeling with specific antibodies for factor VIII von Willebrand factor, desmin or macrophage. Following the characterization of the bone marrow fibroblasts, using human pure 125I-PDGF, a specific binding of 125I-PDGF was demonstrated. The binding reached a plateau after 3 hours at 20°C, and after 4 hours at 4°C. Addition of unlabeled PDGF decreased this binding until 25 %.Saturation curve and scatchard analysis indicated two classes of sites with respectively 21,000 sites/aall and 37.000 sites/cell with an apparent Kd of 0.3 X 10-10 M and 0.5 X 10-9 M. Normal human serum at a concentration of 20 % induced a maximal DNA synthesis measured by-3H thymidine incorporation. When PDGF was added alone to the cultured fibroblasts at a concentration of 15 ng/ml, it induced a maximal DNA synthesis of 400 %.In the presence of 5 % of Platelet Poor Plasma (PPP), the same concentration of PDGF (15ng/ml) increased the incorporation of 3H thymidine up to 900%.In conclusion i) PDGF binds to human bone marrow fibroblasts, ii) PDGF stimulates their proliferation. These results are in favour of a role of PDGF in the proliferation of bone marrow fibroblasts associated with the development of myelofibrosis.

The present study examines the relationships between structure (floristic composition, dendrometric parameters), diversity (diversity and evenness indexes) of urban forest park stands and the ecological (soil fertility, soil moisture), environmental factors (air pollution). The study is based on the forest park stands inventory data, performed from 2012 to 2017 in Kryvyi Rih City, Central Ukraine. The floristic compositions of the urban forest park stands are poor. There are only 23 species that belong to 14 families and 12 genera. More families were represented by at least more than 2% of taxon diversity. While Ulmaceae (2 genera, 4 species–17,39 %), Fabaceae (3 genera, 2 species–17,39 %), Aсеrасеае (1 genera, 4 species–17,39 %) were the most representative families. It was established that at forest park the values of stand density varied from 490 to 660 trees*ha-1, stem heights were from 26 to 31 m, stem diameters were from 13 to 17 cm, stand basal area were from 32 to 49 m2*ha-1, stand volume were from 200 to 415 m3*ha-1. the values of relative stem heights were from 0,63 to 0,82 m*year-1, relative stem diameters were from 0,31 to 0,43 cm*year-1, relative stand basal area were from 0,80 to 1,19 m2*ha-1*year-1, relative stand volume were from 5,45 to 10,28 m3*ha-1*year-1. The varied values of the forest park stands index (Shannon-Wiener diversity index from 0,75 to 1,61, Pielou‟s evenness index from 0,53 to 0,86, Simpson‟s diversity from 0,24 to 0,60, Margalef‟s diversity index from 0,87 to 6,97) indicate the ecological instability of these woody plant communities. Current state of the urban forest park stands determined by the combined influence of ecological (soil fertility, soil moisture) and environmental factors (air pollution).

A espécie Cattleya milleri é uma orquídea endêmica dos Campos Rupestres Ferruginosos do Quadrilátero Ferrífero em Minas Gerais. Esta espécie é atualmente classificada como criticamente ameaçada de extinção sobretudo devido a restrição geográfica de sua ocorrência, degradação de seu habitat natural e reduzidas populações naturais. O estabelecimento de métodos de propagação e cultivo que possibilitem a rápida multiplicação desta espécie é etapa crucial para a conservação ex situ e também para o enriquecimento em áreas naturais e a manutenção da espécie em seu habitat. A micropropagação ou a propagação in vitro consiste na multiplicação em larga escala de plantas através do cultivo de células, tecidos, órgãos ou a planta inteira em meio nutritivo sob condições controladas de temperatura e luminosidade. As etapas da micropropagação são constantemente ajustadas de acordo com as necessidades das diferentes espécies. Diante disso, o objetivo do relatório foi descrever as etapas desenvolvidas para estabelecer o protocolo de micropropagação de C. milleri. O protocolo estabelecido foi dividido em quatro etapas: (1) coleta e assepsia do material vegetal, (2) estabelecimento e desenvolvimento in vitro, (3) aclimatização e rustificação e (4) reintrodução e monitoramento das mudas. Sementes de C. milleri foram retiradas de cápsulas maduras e transferidas para seringas. As seringas contendo as sementes foram preenchidas totalmente com a solução de hipoclorito de sódio (NaClO) a 0,3%. Após 12 minutos, em câmara de fluxo laminar, aproximadamente 1 mL da solução contendo as sementes foi adicionada em potes contendo 22 mL do meio de cultivo previamente esterilizado. O meio utilizado foi composto de sacarose (15g/L), fertilizante B&G® (3mL/L), carvão ativado (1,5g/L) e ágar nutriente (5g/L). A germinação foi observada em quase todas as sementes inoculadas, tendo início aos 25 dias. O processo de propagação in vitro de C. milleri teve duração de 18 meses, com dois episódios de repicagem durante esse período. As plantas responderam positivamente as condições in vitro, apresentando crescimento satisfatório da parte aérea e de raízes. Na etapa de aclimatização, as plantas enraizadas tiveram suas raízes lavadas e foram transplantadas para embalagens plásticas contendo musgo chileno e fragmentos de isopor. Após 450 dias de cultivo em estufa coberta com sombrite 80 (80% de interceptação) foi observada uma reduzida mortalidade de mudas. Posteriormente, plantas aclimatadas foram transplantadas para recipientes contendo substrato natural (contendo canga granular) e cultivadas em estufa com sombrite 80 e posteriormente em sombrite 50, onde permaneceram por 1.095 dias. Ao final da etapa de rustificação foram obtidas aproximadamente 3.000 mudas de C. milleri aptas para o plantio em ambiente natural. A reintrodução destas mudas ocorreu através do plantio das mudas na Serra da Calçada (MG). O monitoramento das plantas ocorre mensalmente com a quantificação das mudas sobreviventes. Após 2 anos de acompanhamento observou-se baixa taxa de mortalidade (-30%) e crescimento satisfatório das plantas. O processo de monitoramento continuará sendo realizado com o objetivo de avaliar os processos de floração e frutificação e recrutamento de novas plantas. Os resultados obtidos evidenciam que a técnica de propagação in vitro é uma alternativa viável para a produção em larga escala de mudas de qualidade da espécie C. milleri. Uma vez que esta é uma espécie criticamente ameaçada de extinção, a reintrodução de plantas em ambiente natural contribui para o enriquecimento das populações existentes e, consequentemente, a conservação da espécie em seu ambiente natural. Uma próxima etapa importante será avaliar a diversidade genética da espécie para determinação das matrizes prioritárias para propagação
