Contemporary wedding ritual is a little-explored area of both the Christian theology and the English social reality of marriage. As persistently important rituals in contemporary England, weddings are of great interest in any attempt to describe and account for the place of ritual in contemporary life. As events which are simultaneously acts of Christian worship, efficacious legal ceremonies and popular cultural rites, Anglican weddings bring into focus numerous issues about the inter-relation of social and religious institutions and experiences, theological responses to contemporary culture, material culture and the defining and mapping of personal relationships. The central part of the research consists of a close, empirical study of weddings in the Church of England. This includes semi-structured interviews with marrying couples and officiating clergy, and observation of weddings and wedding rehearsals. This research was conducted within one deanery in West Yorkshire in 2006 and 2007. Theories of ritual, including rites of passage, and of performance are critically employed to examine the structure and function of wedding ritual, and the way in which specifically Christian ritual is incorporated into and informs a more complex ritual whole. Narrative, an increasingly important interpretative concept in both theology and the social sciences, is also employed as an analytical tool to examine both the way individuals make sense of their own experiences and actions. In addition to a detailed account of contemporary practice, weddings are shown to offer important insights into pastoral and liturgical practice and the ministerial identity of clergy. Moreover, weddings are revealed as vital events in contemporary social life, consolidating and displaying the socially embedded identity of marrying couples.

Latent variable models are widely used in social sciences in which interest is centred on entities such as attitudes, beliefs or abilities for which there e)dst no direct measuring instruments. Latent modelling tries to extract these entities, here described as latent (unobserved) variables, from measurements on related manifest (observed) variables. Methodology already exists for fitting a latent variable model to manifest data that is either categorical (latent trait and latent class analysis) or continuous (factor analysis and latent profile analysis). In this thesis a latent trait and a latent class model are presented for analysing the relationships among a set of mixed manifest variables using one or more latent variables. The set of manifest variables contains metric (continuous or discrete) and binary items. The latent dimension is continuous for the latent trait model and discrete for the latent class model. Scoring methods for allocating individuals on the identified latent dimen-sions based on their responses to the mixed manifest variables are discussed. ' Item nonresponse is also discussed in attitude scales with a mixture of binary and metric variables using the latent trait model. The estimation and the scoring methods for the latent trait model have been generalized for conditional distributions of the observed variables given the vector of latent variables other than the normal and the Bernoulli in the exponential family. To illustrate the use of the naixed model four data sets have been analyzed. Two of the data sets contain five memory questions, the first on Thatcher's resignation and the second on the Hillsborough football disaster; these five questions were included in BMRBI's August 1993 face to face omnibus survey. The third and the fourth data sets are from the 1990 and 1991 British Social Attitudes surveys; the questions which have been analyzed are from the sexual attitudes sections and the environment section respectively.

The thesis examines the perceptions and treatment of Gypsies in Britain during the early twentieth century. This enquiry touches upon a number of historically important themes and also has a contemporary relevance. Firstly it outlines the tradition of writing about the Gypsies which had developed over the previous two centuries and considers the treatment of the group in the work of early commentators. Secondly, it explores the nature of stereotypes of the Gypsies in early twentieth century society and considers the ways in which romantic and antipathetic images of the Gypsies could be crafted into a coherent rather than a contradictory body of thought by drawing on ideas of hierarchy and degeneration. Thirdly, it analyses responses to Gypsies from across sedentary society. The focus here is on the treatment of the group by legislators, local authorities, missionaries and scholars. Finally, it argues that responses to the group must be considered as of part of the age-old tradition of hostility towards nomadism in Europe. The examination of the treatment of the Gypsies in Britain reveals significant differences with their treatment elsewhere in Europe during the same period. Although there is evidence of antipathy towards the Gypsies at every level of British society there is a relative absence of institutionalised intolerance. However, it is evident that the ideas which were used to justify such treatment of the Gypsies elsewhere in Europe were also present in Britain, and that the treatment of immigrant Gypsies by the British state, in particular, reveals that it was not immune from antipathy.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterised by social-communication difficulties and non-social symptoms such as restricted and repetitive behaviours and interests. ASD characteristics can be investigated at the subclinical trait level within the general population, and these quantitative autistic traits have been shown to have a smooth distribution. Adolescence is an important developmental stage, particularly for the emergence of internalising problems. However, few studies to date have investigated the causes of co-occurring autistic traits and internalising traits during adolescence. The aim of this thesis is to explore the aetiological causes of this trait association between the ages of 12 to 16 years using a quantitative genetic approach. This thesis employs a classic twin design and the sample came from the Twins Early Development Study (TEDS). The causes of the association between autistic and internalising traits in early adolescence are the first focus of this thesis. The analyses in Chapter 4 explore this aetiological association at ages 12-14 years, revealing a moderate phenotypic trait association and at the aetiological level moderate genetic overlap, substantial shared environmental and modest nonshared environmental overlap. Teasing apart these associations further, Chapter 5 identifies specific autistic-like behaviours by means of factor analysis. Relating these factor-derived autistic trait subdomains to the internalising trait measure demonstrated distinguishable patterns of phenotypic and aetiological associations. A factor named autistic-like ‘Social Unease’ showed the most phenotypic and genetic overlap with internalising traits. Secondly, this thesis investigates in Chapter 6 the role of childhood nonshared environment on internalising and autistic traits in early adolescence using the monozygotic twin differences design. Analyses showed that birth weight, childhood hyperactivity and peer problems played a role, via the nonshared environment, in influencing individual differences in internalising and autistic traits in early adolescence. Finally, Chapter 7 presents findings on later adolescence, at age 16 years, exploring the association of autistic traits with anxiety traits and depression traits separately and drawing on both parent and self ratings. The implications of these findings, their limitations and their contribution to the current literature are considered in the Discussion (Chapter 8).

Las dos obras cumbre de este género son las Sonatas y Partitas de Johann Sebastián Bach, y los Caprichos Opus 1 de Paganini. Al observar la trayectoria de la cronología artística, apreciamos cómo existe un repertorio que nace en el primer Barroco, que ha conducido a que estas creaciones no sean piezas aisladas sino obras insertas en una tradición compositiva hoy día bastante desconocida.

Studien tar avstamp i de livliga diskussioner om specialpedagogens roll, uppdrag och arbetsuppgifter som förekommer i bland annat pedagogisk litteratur, tidskrifter och digitala forum. Syftet med studien är att belysa vilka arbetsuppgifter en specialpedagog, verksam inom förskola, grundskola och gymnasieskola i Sverige, bör utföra. Studien har en kvantitativ ansats och data samlades in med hjälp av anonyma digitala enkäter som besvarades av examinerade specialpedagoger. Resultatet visar att specialpedagoger är eniga om att en mångfald av arbetsuppgifter bör ingå i uppdraget. Resultatet visar också att specialpedagoger blir ombedda att utföra många arbetsuppgifter som de inte anser borde ingå i deras uppdrag. Av studien framgår att specialpedagoger önskar en tydligare rolldefinition och de lyfter rektors betydelse för detta. Studien kan utgöra ett bidrag till debatten om rollen och bidra till att klargöra behovet av tydliggjorda roller samt i förlängningen leda till ökad samsyn kring rollerna i skolan.
The study is based on the lively discussions about the special educational needs coordinator's role, assignments and tasks that occur in educational literature, journals and digital forums among others. The purpose is to shed light on which tasks a special educational needs coordinator, active in preschool, primary school and upper secondary school in Sweden, should perform. The study has a quantitative approach and data was collected using anonymous digital surveys. The respondents were graduated special educational needs coordinators. The result shows that special educational needs coordinators agree that a variety of tasks should be included in the assignment. The result also shows that they are asked to perform many tasks that they do not consider should be included in the assignment. The study shows that the special educational needs coordinators want a clearer role definition and they emphasize the importance of the principal in this. The study can constitute a contribution to the debate about the role, help to elucidate the need for clarified roles and in the long run lead to increased consensus about roles in school.

Jaume Cabré is a professional writer and a music enthusiast. He is a man with a thorough knowledge of this art and that is reflected constantly in his work. Music pervades his stories: either in his plots, his narrative structure or simply because their protagonists are musicians; but, above all, as for the presence of it is relevant to the evolution of the text. The author justifies his mastery of the musical language by means of the musicality of his words, the cadence of his sentences, his sense of rhythm, the use of the rests/silences and his stylistic resources. This dissertation intends to unravel the literary world of this writer, mainly, analyzing his works from the musical point of view, because music in Cabre’s novels and short stories is not incidental but literary essence. Our main goal is reading the author’s literary work from the musical perspective, matching the particular tools for analysis of both disciplines and set it into the cultural framework –literary, musical, philosophical... artistic in general- of the author.

The present study analyzes the data obtained in the execution of the Opera eLearning project, a multidisciplinary effort to develop a solution for Opera singing distance lessons at the graduate level, using high bandwidth to deliver quality audio and video experience that has been evaluated by singing teachers, chorus and orchestra directors, singers and other professional musicians. The research work includes the phases of design, execution and evaluation of pilot tests, followed by further development and execution of several experimental exercises with the system, all of them carried out between July 2008 and April 2009. This is an empirical research, an exploratory case study that has provided enough data to arrive to a sustainable model for a telepresence learning environment. Different usability methods have been implemented in order to assure users of the quality of the product. The main objective is to prove whether the system or artifact proposed can be used to deliver a complete remote singing class at a higher education level; for that purpose, we have defined several research categories that describe the usability of the system in multiple dimensions. We have used “design as research” approaches to promote innovation in the technological area. The theoretical framework is based on a wide variety of fields; from acoustics, physics, music, professional singing to telecommunications and multimedia technology. However, the common thread and central issue under analysis is distance education, through the construction of a remote learning system. We have also included the corresponding justification of the scientific methodology employed
El presente estudio analiza los datos obtenidos en la ejecución del proyecto Opera eLearning, un esfuerzo multidisciplinario para desarrollar una solución que permita dar clases a distancia de canto lírico a nivel de educación superior, utilizando conexiones de banda ancha con el fin de proveer una experiencia de vídeo y audio de calidad, la que ha sido evaluada por profesores de canto, directores de coros y orquesta, cantantes y otros músicos profesionales. El trabajo de investigación incluye las fases de diseño, ejecución y evaluación de las pruebas piloto, seguido del posterior desarrollo y ejecución de varios ejercicios experimentales con el sistema, todos ellos efectuados entre Julio de 2008 y Abril de 2009. Esta es una investigación empírica, un caso de estudio exploratorio que ha obtenido datos suficientes como para definir un modelo sostenible de entorno de enseñanza por telepresencia. Diversos métodos de usabilidad fueron implementados con el fin de asegurar a los usuarios la calidad del producto. El objetivo principal es probar si el sistema o artefacto propuesto puede ser usado para realizar de modo remoto una clase completa de canto lírico a nivel de educación superior; con tal propósito, hemos definido varias categorías de investigación que describen la usabilidad del sistema en múltiples dimensiones. Hemos utilizado el enfoque de “diseño como investigación” para promover la innovación en el área tecnológica. El marco teórico se basa en una amplia variedad de campos; desde la acústica, la física, la música, el canto profesional hasta las telecomunicaciones y tecnología multimedia. Sin embargo, el hilo común y tema central bajo análisis es la educación a distancia, ya que se trata de la construcción de un sistema de aprendizaje remoto. También se he incluido la justificación correspondiente a la metodología científica empleada.

The decade 1968-78 saw three major developments in Middle East politics these were the Arab defeat in the Six-Day War in 1967, the British withdrawal from East of Suez in 1971 and the Yom Kippur War of 1973 These events stimulated the United States increasingly to involve itself in regional politics in an attempt to maintain stability and continued access to oil As a major oil producer and the one with the largest proven reserves, Saudi Arabia sought to ensure its security by trading oil for American assistance. This thesis examines Saudi-United States relations from the Six-Day War to the Camp David Agreement of 1978 and the collapse of the Shah's regime in Iran and concludes that Saudi Interests were not obtained but rather those of the U.S. secured. The thesis looks in particular at Saudi security interests, American arms sales and the political tensions produced by the pervasive Arab-Israeli conflict. It draws extensively on official documentation in both Arabic and English, while recognising the highly personal nature of Saudi political reaction to the constraints and opportunities of the period under review. In the final analysis Saudi leaders paid a very high price for a very limited commitment to their own security while the U.S. was able to maintain and enhance its political commitment to the state of Israel.

Guai are bound up with Chinese traditional culture, and have been presented via various cultural forms, such as literature, drama, New Year print and costume. Indeed, guai imagery has played a significant role in the definition and development of traditional Chinese visual culture. Throughout history, guai visual products reflected national values, aesthetic appreciation and philosophical aspirations. Nevertheless, in twentieth-century China, political, social and religious transitions have changed the traditional role of guai imagery. Particularly, from the year 1949 when the People’s Republic of China was founded to 1978 when economic reform and the Open Door Policy were introduced, guai visual production was under Mao’s artistic control nationwide, and its political functions became dominant. Traditional guai imagery was politically filtered and modified to satisfy both Mao and the Communist Party’s political aspirations and the public aesthetic. This research examines the transformation of guai imagery formally and symbolically in the Chinese aesthetic and cultural context from 1949 to 1978, and builds knowledge to evaluate and understand the production, dissemination and perception of guai visual products in this period. It provides a contribution to the understanding of the inherent values of guai and how the reinterpretation of guai imagery that reflects political, social and cultural values in Chinese visual art.

Peru's microfinance market is dynamic and is comprised of a plethora of financial institutions that offer numerous microfinance services. With increasingly more institutions adding microfinance to their loan portfolio, and with no interest rate cap on microloans in Peru, what impact will this growing market have on the poor? In the past, microfinance institutions (MFIs) have had clients abuse the system, but increased transparency between microfinance institutions and new managing practices are now used to minimize adverse selection. Yet as the microfinance market expands with more large banks gaining control how are borrowers, particularly the most vulnerable, going to be impacted? This, paper evaluates the dynamics of how microfinance institutions have emerged and evolved throughout Latin America and then introduces an atypical model, the Uniones de Credito y Ahorro (UNICA). Six UNICA programs from rural villages outside Cayaltí are evaluated using both aggregate loan data that measures the frequency of loan use in the village, and surveys with open-ended response questions to bring in UNICA members' perspective. With the data collected this paper attempts to understand the diverse factors that make the UNICA approach different from the traditional Latin American model. And ultimately strives to discover whether the UNICA model provides distinctive benefits to the borrowers and the financial markets that are not provided by traditional Latin American MFI models.

World-wide coral reefs are in a state of decline as a result of many local and regional factors. Recent global mass mortalities of reef corals due to record warm sea temperatures have led researchers to consider global warming as one of the most significant threats to the persistence of coral reef ecosystems over the next 100 years. It is well established that elevated sea surface temperatures (SSTs) cause widespread coral bleaching, yet confusion lingers as to what facet of extreme temperatures is most important. Utilizing long-term in situ datasets, nine thermal stress indices were calculated and their effectiveness at segregating bleaching years a posteriori for multiple reefs on the Florida Reef Tract was tested. Simple bleaching thresholds based on deviations above the climatological maximum monthly SST were just as effective at identifying bleaching years as complex thermal stress indices. Near real-time bleaching alerts issued by NOAA's Integrated Coral Observing Network (ICON) are now based upon a running 30-day average SST, such that alerts are only issued when the running 30-day average SST exceeds the estimated bleaching threshold for a particular site. In addition to three widespread, mass-coral bleaching events, the Florida Reef Tract was impacted by three tropical storms and 12 hurricanes from 1997-2005. Sea surface cooling associated with the high frequency of hurricanes that impacted Florida in 2005 likely acted to ameliorate the severity and duration of bleaching. Nonetheless, hurricane-associated cooling is not expected to nullify the proposed effects of climate change on coral reefs. The role of thermal stress in coral bleaching has been extensively studied for eastern tropical Pacific (ETP) coral reefs. However, the ETP presents a unique opportunity as this region has sub-optimal conditions for coral reef development because of upwelling of carbon dioxide-enriched deep water along the shallow thermocline. This upwelling results in a depressed aragonite saturation state which is likely an additional factor in the poor reef development throughout the ETP. The highest aragonite saturation documented in this study occur in the Gulf of Chiriquí, which corresponds with the greatest reef development of the entire ETP. Seasonal upwelling had a significant effect on the carbonate chemistry of surface waters in Pacific Panamá. This regionally-depressed aragonite saturation state of the ETP appears to result in corals with a less dense skeleton. Density values of poritid corals from the Galápagos, where aragonite saturation was the lowest documented in this study, were significantly less dense relative to those from Panamá and the Great Barrier Reef. The density of non-living pocilloporid framework components were no different across the ETP aragonite saturation gradients. This could be a result of the activity of boring sponges removing the primary carbonate material within the dead coral skeleton, thus lowering density, albeit physical-chemical dissolution cannot be ruled out. These studies provide real-world examples of the ramifications of global climate change upon coral reef ecosystems.

The interaction of a bubble with solid surfaces, hydrophobic and hydrophilic, was investigated. When a bubble approaches towards a solid surface, a thin liquid film forms between them. The liquid in the film drains until an instability forms and film ruptures resulting in a three phase contact (TPC). Following rupture, the TPC line spreads on the solid surface. In the present study, glycerol-water solutions with varying percentages of water were used to investigate the effect of viscosity. Experiments were carried out with varying bubble size. The rupture and TPC line movement were recorded by high-speed digital video camera. The dependence of the TPC line movement on different parameters was investigated. The experimental results were compared with the existing theories for the TPC line movement. An empirical equation was developed to predict the TPC line movement. Formation or rupturing of the intervening film in case of a hydrophilic surfaces, which were glass surface cleaned by six cleaning techniques, was investigated. It was shown that a stable film forms for acid or alkali cleaning.

Genetic modification presents the potential to advance not only agricultural production but to increase quality of life as well. The potential this innovation presents will be irrelevant if the public is unwilling to accept and adopt it. The following study examines public perceptions of biotechnology, specifically the consumer approval of genetically modified food products. This study was based on data collected from a national survey conducted in both the United States and South Korea. The United States survey was designed to be nationally representative and consisted of 1201 respondents. The South Korean survey was also designed to be nationally representative and consisted of 1054 respondents Analysis was conducted using two questions from the survey questionnaire as dependent variables: (1) approval of the use of genetic modification in the creation of plant-based food products, and (2) approval of the use of genetic modification in the creation of animal-based food products. This study utilized probit models for binary choice and ordered probit models to analyze the likelihood of consumer approval of the use of genetic modification for the creation of food products. Findings indicated that consumers in the U.S. and South Korea who possessed an accurate knowledge of the applications and outcomes of GM technology were more likely to approve of its use for the creation of foods than those who had inaccurate or no knowledge of the technology. Additionally, the majority of consumers in the U.S. and South Korea believe that GM foods should be labeled as such. Those consumers who felt GM labeling to be necessary were less likely to approve of the GM of foods than those who did not feel GM labeling to be necessary. It was also found that consumers in both countries are less approving of the GM of animals than the GM of plants. Consumer approval of the use of genetic modification in the creation of food products can be increased with proper education that provides accurate knowledge of the applications of GM. Labeling of GM products is likely to result in a decrease in demand, which may be offset by public educational campaigns.

The present study examined procedural and distributive justice outcomes of discipline in an athletic team setting. A 2 (Consistency of Punishment: consistent vs. conditional) x 2 (Violation Severity: moderate vs. severe) x 2 (Punishment Severity: moderate vs. severe) x 2 (Decision Maker: head coach vs. team captains) factorial design was used. Participants responded to four of the 16 hypothetical scenarios resulting from the design. Participants included 354 fans in attendance at a several university athletic events and students in psychology courses. The results indicated that consistent punishment was perceived as more fair to the punished athlete, teammates, and fans than was conditional punishment. Consistent punishment was perceived as more likely than conditional punishment to deter future misconduct by the punished athlete and teammates. The findings of the importance of consistency to fairness perceptions are consistent with the organizational justice literature and suggest that principles derived in traditional organizations may apply in athletic team settings. However, the current study did not find that severe punishment was more likely than moderately severe punishment to deter future misconduct by the punished athlete and teammates, which was inconsistent with the research literature on punishment. The present research indicated that inconsistencies in applying punishment based on status likely will have a negative effect on fairness perceptions in an athletic setting just as it does in an organizational setting. Intercollegiate athletics are unique in the sense that there are many outside observers, most notably fans, who pay close attention to athlete misconduct and its subsequent outcome. According to the present results, if coaches are interested in fan perceptions of fairness, punishment should be consistently applied according to team rules for all players regardless of their status on the team.

Yann Apperrys third novel, Diabolus in musica, is a pastiche of diabolic and gothic tropes that tells of a musical genius who composes a ballade that kills. Resurrections, doppelgangers and triads are reoccurring themes. Although the narrator kills his doppelganger on the first page, the name of this double, Lazarus, haunts the narrative with the threat of resurrection. Similarly, the threefold tritone, the diabolus in musica, is not only echoed in the numerical structure of Apperrys novel but also in the familial triad: the fathers presence is dark and demoniac, provoking the cruel music that the son in turn forces onto the exterior world; the mother is a ghostly distillation of the Eternal Feminine. In terms of comparative readings, Diabolus can be read alongside Suskinds Perfume as the Bildungsroman of an outsider raised without love who turns astounding genius to homicidal ends. It shares narrative and structural similarities with Manns Doctor Faustus: each tells of a prodigy who composes music and a faithful sidekick who composes narrative; each arranges his novel according to number. Nabokovs influence on Apperrys work is also significant; many parallels are to be found with his third novel, The Defense. Approaches to translation diverge according to their foundational conceptions of language: do we create language or does language create us? To conclude the former is to adopt an approach that focuses on the meanings of source texts while to conclude the latter is to focus more on their formal properties. Caught between these differing conceptions, the translator must choose between domestication and foreignization; I favour the latter for literary translation. I define the literary through a reading of the aesthetic in Dauenhauer and Kristeva, and then I review the arguments that Benjamin, Derrida, Berman and Venuti make in favour of word-based translation. From this I conclude that translation can, in refusing to hide its foreign origins, lead readers into the unknown territory of a strange language, author and text, where they become strangers, and where their language and culture become foreign. With this partial translation of Diabolus, I seek to provoke such an encounter with foreignness.

Due to its high levels of concern and awareness of environmental issues, rural character, and sparse population, Vermont would at first glance appear to possess the ideal recipe to become a national leader in renewable energy development. Renewable initiatives have focused primarily on wind energy, as over a dozen wind farms have been proposed in the last few years across the state. However, in spite of the widely held belief in Vermont’s wind energy future, its proponents have run into vehement opposition at every proposed site, often successfully impeding the planned developments. This report develops a wide-level framework of the motivations of and complaints presented by wind opposition groups around the state, followed by an analysis of opposition strategies commonly employed. These are contrasted with the tactics used by wind developers and their supporters to remediate or overcome this opposition. Next, this essay will offer a view of the state and local institutional settings in which these battles take place, and finally conclude with a brief analysis of various alternatives to utility-scale wind, offering suggestions for wind’s role in the future of energy in Vermont.

In this piece of literature, storytelling is used as a method towards understanding, knowing, and validating the experience of the “other”, in this case Mexican immigrants of all shapes and colors, sexual preferences, and diverse socioeconomic standing. I would like to shift the discourse from their potential as socioeconomic assets towards a recognition of their essence as participating members of our community. Immigrants are artists, they are intellectuals, they are leaders. They are simply not given the space in American society to develop their potential without being chained down to the “immigrant” label. I would like to stress the recognition of fluidity and diversity within this marginalized group, in the sense that to assume a homogeneous experience for this population aggravates the gap of understanding, tolerance, acceptance, and celebration of this rich community. Hegemonic forces have kept immigrants in the shadows, blinded, and hidden from the rest of society. My ultimate goal is to promote an idea of fearless engagement in active, undisciplined, self-determined embracement of the hybrid culture that remains buried under layers of socially constructed self-disciplining forces of domination.

Orange County is the traditional homeland of the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians, Acjachemen Nation. Though the tribal-nation is not federally recognized, it is a state and county recognized tribe. Development is a constant threat to Acjachemen ancestral homelands. The Acjachemen are faced with the problem that their ancestral sites are now other peoples' lands. Many Acjachemen sacred sites have already been developed, like the burial grounds at Putuidem. The four sacred sites I explore -- the Cogged Stone site at Bolsa Chica in Huntington Beach, California, Puvungna in Long Beach California, Putuidem in San Juan Capistrano, and CA-ORA-64 at the Newport Back Bay in Newport Beach -- share very political histories as well as immense ceremonial significances, significances measured in great part by their sacred rocks, their other natural features, and their roles as gathering places. I learned that, by opening my mind to the ways rocks ground ceremony, I could better appreciate Acjachemen ways of being and, in turn, appreciate these spaces' sanctity. My role in writing this thesis is to facilitate an exchanges of ideas -- ideas which explore what is sacred and ceremonial, and why - in hopes of cultivating in the reader a consciousness about these complex issues. This is a celebration of the individuals who have shared their stories with me, a celebration of ceremony and Acjachemen heritage.

Adolescents are disproportionately affected by a wide range of STDs due to high level of personal risk behaviors and poor access to STD prevention services. As documented in numerous previous studies, STDs could lead to many serious consequences to adolescents’ health and the overall well being of society. One prominent concern is that STDs increase adolescent’s risk in acquiring HIV infection. Among all STDs, Chlamydia is the most prevalent in adolescents as well as in the general population. No previous studies have attempted to examine the social interaction of adolescent population heavily affected by Chlamydia. In this study, we would like to take a step forward to identify the difference in behavioral risk level between Chlamydia positive and negative adolescent social network and to describe any impacts of these groups on the transmission of other STDs using social network analysis of data collected from adolescent population in Dekalb County, Georgia. The results indicated highest behavioral risk in the negative girl index respondents’ contacts followed by those of positive boys, positive girls and finally negative boys. However STD prevalence in the contacts among these different groups did not follow the same pattern. Prevalence of STD is highest in the negative girls’ contact group followed by that of positive boys, negative boys; and interestingly positive boys’ contacts exhibit the lowest STD rate. As informed by the results, the presence of infection is not a sufficient indicator of risks; thus, network characteristic was also examined to accurately determine transmission dynamics in this population. Social and sexual network structures among these four different index groups and their contacts suggested low level of STD transmission.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between multidimensional perfectionism, shame and Trichotillomania (TTM) symptom severity in a sample of college students and a clinical sample of individuals with TTM. A total of 286 college students were recruited from a large, Southeastern public University and 114 individuals with TTM were recruited across at a conference for individuals with TTM and TTM-focused social media communities. The study sought to explore whether shame (characterological, behavioral or bodily) mediated the relationship between wither adaptive or maladaptive perfectionism and TTM symptom severity. Correlations and tests of means were conducted and the Preacher and Hayes macro with bootstrapping was utilized to test mediation and moderation with the following measures: the Almost Perfect Scale-Revised (APS-R; Slaney et al., 2001), the Massachusetts General Hairpulling Scale (MGH-HPS; Keuthen et al., 1995, and the Experience of Shame Scale (ESS; Andrews, Qian, & Valentine, 2002). Results suggested that the clinical sample reported significantly higher levels of all three types of shame, as well as significantly higher scores for TTM severity than the student sample. No mediation or moderation was found among the variables for the student sample. In the clinical sample, no significant moderation was found, but behavioral shame was significantly mediated the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and TTM severity. A discussion of limitations, implications for practitioners, and directions for future research were provided.

The ongoing research concerning African American males enrolled in teacher education programs is essential for a number of reasons. Research specifically addressing preservice teaching, teacher education, and the African American male student is needed to promote the well-being of any school of education. According to McCray, Sindelar, Kilgore, and Neal (2002), colleges of education have addressed the issue of underrepresentation and under population of African American teachers through policy reform and financial support. The narratives of African American male preservice teachers and their perspectives on teacher education may provide a context for other researchers seeking to understand how and why African American males move into the field of education. More importantly, one particular way to enhance and advance the cause of the African American male preservice teacher is to accept a “culturally sensitive practice” (Tillman, 2002, p. 3) and insure epistemological and research practices unfamiliar to many teachers of preservice teachers are approved and embraced. This study is situated in a cultural, racial, and gendered point of view seeking to highlight the individual and shared experiences of three African American male preservice teachers enrolled in a graduate teacher education program. Stabilized through the lens of critical race theory (CRT), the gathering of counter-narratives provided the context to allow the research participants a vehicle to name their own reality.

Joining the ongoing scholarly discussion on veiling, this study seeks to understand the role the French press played in legitimating the ban, the first of its kind to be implemented in Europe. I argue that discourse in the press made the legislation appear reasonable and necessary because of its association with gender inequality and religious fundamentalism. This media narrative legitimated the legislation by presenting the veil as intolerable and “against public social order.” Made necessary by rapidly shifting demographics in contemporary France, this discourse was couched in a defensive employment of laïcité.

The new IDEIA (2004) mandates regarding the implementation of Response-to-Intervention (RtI) present challenges for general education teachers. The law dictates the implementation of Response-to-Intervention, which requires the application of a pyramid of interventions for students failing to make adequate yearly progress in response to general education programs. Response-to-Intervention regulations redefine general education teacher roles, increase responsibilities regarding instructional interventions for at-risk learners, and change the process used to determine qualification for specific learning disability (SLD). A qualitative case study investigates how three general educators in a rural public elementary school understand and implement Response-to-Intervention policy. The study also examines teacher descriptions of the influence policy implementation on instructional practices for at-risk students. Data collection methods include structured and unstructured interviews, videotaped classroom observations, Teacher Performance Record data, lesson plans, and relevant RtI artifacts to advance understanding of RtI implementation in relation to the particular research site and study participants. Focusing on a single site allowed the researcher to develop holistic descriptions of contextual situations to inform future RtI implementation, as well as improve professional development and instructional practices for students involved in the RtI process. Study results provide a framework for understanding how elementary school teachers negotiate RtI implementation in the general education setting. The findings report personal influences on implementation, environmental supports for implementation, and positive and negative consequences of implementation. The study concludes with recommendations for local education agencies (LEA), administrators, and professional learning, as well as suggestions for future research.

Rubella virus (RUBV) is a positive-strand RNA virus and the causative agent of rubella and congenital rubella syndrome in humans. To replicate its RNA, RUBV forms membrane-associated spherules, called replication complexes (RCs), the induction of which requires the two virus nonstructural proteins (NSPs), P150 and P90. Interestingly, late in infection the NSPs form a unique cytoplasmic fiber network, similar in appearance to microtubules, the function of which is unknown. Little is known about the roles of the RUBV NSPs in forming these structures and, to this end, we scrutinized the behavior and biochemical properties of the NSPs, both after expression from plasmids and during RUBV infection, using mutagenic, biochemical and pharmacological approaches. The following findings were made: First, the precursor from which P150 and P90 are produced via an embedded protease at the C-terminus of P150, called P200, was required for initial targeting to cytoplasmic foci. P150 was the determinant of fiber formation and while P90 had no specific targeting sequences on its own, P90 sequences within P200 were required for correct targeting of P200. An alpha-helix at the N-terminus of P150 was also important for correct targeting of P200, putatively by mediating the interaction between P150 and P90 within the precursor. Second, the membrane binding domain within the NSPs was within the N-terminal ~450 amino acids of P150. P150 is in an exceptionally tight association with membranes. Third, both the N- and C-terminal regions of P150, and specifically long alpha-helices within these regions, are necessary for fiber formation. Fiber formation relied on an intact microtubule network, but neither microtubule repositioning nor dynamic movement along microtubules was required. Additionally, it was shown that microtubules were not necessary in RUBV replication. Finally, P150 fibers were not required for RUBV replication; however, it was shown that the fibers are likely important in formation of cytoplasmic extensions through which a novel system of cell-to-cell transport of viral RNA in the absence of virus particles appears to occur.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2007), 27% of the nation’s 8th grade population scored below the basic reading level in 2006-2007. Reading fluency strategies are a viable practice for improving reading achievement yet seldom are they incorporated into the 8th grade curriculum. To be effective, passages used in reading fluency strategies should be at the students’ instructional reading level (Daly, Persampieri, et al., 2005; Welsch, 2007). However, if increased oral reading fluency gained at the instructional reading level fails to generalize to content-area text that a student is required to read, the gain is not clinically significant, as it does not allow the student access to required reading. Stahl and Heubach (2006) recommended providing instruction in more difficult material while providing a strong degree of support. In this study, four middle school students reading one to two years below grade level received strong support for increasing reading fluency while using their social studies textbook. The intervention package consisted of listening passage preview, repeated reading, phrase-drill error correction, and performance feedback with student charting. Two research questions guided this study: (a) What are the effects of a comprehensive treatment package consisting of commonly utilized strategies for improving oral reading fluency on middle school students’ oral reading fluency using their required grade-level social studies textbooks? and (b) to what extent does performance generalize to required literature textbook passages and passages from CRCT Coach in Science (2002) and CRCT Coach in Social Studies (2002)? A multiple probe across participants design was used to answer these questions. Visual analysis of graphically displayed single-case data revealed that the multicomponent reading intervention positively affected student performance on intervention and generalization passages. The results of this study are promising, and given that reading content-area text is the core of education in middle school, further research is necessary.

Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) has been use to discriminate different pathogens by signals from cells infected with these versus normal cells as references. To do the statistical analysis, Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) was utilized to distinguish any two kinds of virus‐infected cells and normal cells. Validation using Bootstrap method and Cross‐validations were employed to calculate the shrinkages of Area Under the ROC Curve (AUC) and specificities corresponding to 80%, 90%, and 95% sensitivities. The result shows that our procedure can significantly discriminate these pathogens when we compare infected cells with the normal cells. On the height of this success, PLSR was applied again to simultaneously compare two kinds of virus‐infected cells and the normal cells. The shrinkage of Volume Under the Surface (VUS) was calculated to do the evaluation of model diagnostic performance. The high value of VUS demonstrates that our method can effectively differentiate virus‐infected cells and normal cells.

In this thesis I will explore the relationship between Nozick’s self-ownership principle and freedom. I will defend G.A. Cohen’s critique of self-ownership and try to show how his argument that self-ownership is hostile to genuine freedom presents a problem for Nozick. I think it is clear that Nozick’s self-ownership does little to protect a meaningful sort of freedom; and a meaningful sort of freedom is exactly what Nozick aims to protect. This is true because eudaimonistic moral beliefs ought to undergird Nozick’s self-ownership thesis, and self-ownership can therefore be assessed in light of whether it actually promotes human flourishing in the relevant ways. This undergirding eudaimonism becomes clear when we see that self-ownership is intended to protect the ability of each individual to pursue and act upon her own conception of the good.

In this study I first examined whether the cognitive processes (hot versus cold cognition) underlying judgments to traditional moral situations are universal to situations that are morally neutral, and whether individual differences in cognitive ability moderate these judgments. Second, I tested whether it was possible to modify the impact of hot versus cold processing systems on judgment deliberation by shifting the focus of attention during the decision-making process. I conclude that moral judgment is not simply the product of cognitive ability and is not sufficiently motivated by hot cognitive experiences alone. The role of cognitive abilities on moral valuation requires further examination.

This dissertation comprises two essays. While the topics of both essays are different both are interrelated on the base of economic development. The first essay examines ethnic wage gaps on segmented labor markets with evidence from Latin American countries. The second essay revisits the determinants of fiscal decentralization with an emphasis on the role that geography plays in determining fiscal decentralization. The first essay contributes to limited literature on ethnic wage gaps in Latin America. It examines ethnic wage gaps for workers in formal and informal labor markets. Using data from Latin American countries we estimate and examine across-ethnic wage gaps for informal and formal markets, their changes over time, factors that explain their differences, and the wage gap distribution. More specifically, we verify that different ethnic wage gaps do exist across formal and informal markets; they behave differently not only at their means but also along the wage distribution. The results indicate that higher ethnic wage gaps in informal sectors exist not only on average but also throughout the distribution. In addition, we find that wage gaps have declined significantly over the last 10 years. we explain this by examining changes in the prices of institutional factors and changes in human capital endowments. The distributional analysis shows a decrease in the unexplained component, especially in the top part of the distribution. The second essay contributes to the existing literature on the determinants of fiscal decentralization by motivating theoretically and exploiting in depth the empirical relevance that geography has as a determinant of fiscal decentralization. The relationship between decentralization and geography is based on the logic that more geographically diverse countries show greater heterogeneity among their citizens, including their preferences and needs for public goods and services provisions. Communications and physical distance are also a very important issue and play a key role on the effect of geography over time. (Lora et. al., 2003) argue geography plays a key role in economic and social development, as well as in the institutional design of the countries; yet, this effect could be enhanced (or diminished) in the presence of better physical infrastructure or communications. The theoretical model in this paper builds on the work by Arzaghi and Henderson (2002) and Panizza (1999). For the empirical estimation, we use a panel data set for approximately 91 countries for the period 1960-2005. Physical geography is measured along several dimensions, including elevation, land area and climate. We construct a geographical fragmentation index and test its effect on fiscal decentralization. In addition, we interact the geographical fragmentation index with time-variant infrastructure variables in order to test the effect that infrastructure and communications have on the relationship between geography and fiscal decentralization. For robustness, we construct Gini coefficients for in-country elevation and climate. We find a positive and strong correlation between geographical factors and fiscal decentralization. We also find that while the development of infrastructure (in transportation, communications, etc.) tends to reduce the effect of geography on decentralization, this effect is rather small and mostly statistically insignificant, meaning that the impact of geography survives over time. The strategy has additional value because geography may be used as an instrument for decentralization in future econometric estimations where decentralization is used as an explanatory variable, but may be suspected to be endogenous to the economic process being studied (economic growth, political instability, macroeconomic stability, income distribution, etc.).

Obiettivo di questo lavoro è stato valutare la diffusione di AR in differenti ceppi di S. thermophilus isolati tra il 1947 e il 2004 e provenienti da differenti ambienti, in modo da avere un chiaro andamento del fenomeno; questo è stato possibile analizzando un numero significativo di ceppi isolati in un periodo di tempo che va da prima dell'utilizzo degli antibiotici fino ai giorni nostri. L'espressione fenotipica è stata valutata con tre differenti metodi (microdiluizioni in brodo, E-test e Disk Diffusion), in accordo con gli standard NCCLS, per la determinazione delle MICs (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration, ovvero Concentrazioni Minime Inibenti). Per la valutazione genetica è stata impiegata la tecnica dei microarrays a DNA utilizzando oligonucleotidi da 50 e 60-mer, per un totale di 300, appartenenti a 10 diverse classi di antibiotici. La conferma dei risultati è stata ottenuta mediante PCR e sequenziamento. In 9 ceppi di S. thermophilus è stato possibile mettere in evidenza la presenza di almeno uno dei geni tetS ed ermB responsabili della resistenza agli antibiotici Tetraciclina e Eritromicina rispettivamente.
The aim of the present work was to assess the AR diffusion in a total of 70 different strains of Streptococcus thermophilus, collected between 1950 and 2004 and from different environments; in this way we had the possibility to obtain a clear overview of the response of these bacteria to a large variety of antibiotics, having been able to analyze a significant number of different strains, originated from different areas and distributed over a wide time period, since before the use of antibiotics up to the present day. The phenotypic expression has been evaluated by using three different methods: microdilution, E-test and disk diffusion. The genetic analysis was performed using 50 and 60-mer oligonucleotides DNA based micro array for the identification of AR genes; the AR genes represented by the oligonucleotides on the micro array belong to: Aminoglycoside, Extended Spectrum ?-lactamase (ESBL), Chloramphenicol, Macrolide Lincosamides and Streptogramin (MLS) group, Sulfonamide, Tetracycline, Trimethoprim and Vancomycin. tetS and ermB genes were found and sequenced in 4 out of the total of the S. thermophilus investigated. Furthermore we have wanted to establish the genetic location of above-mentioned genes and assess their transfer intra and inter species adopting the conjugation technique in plate.

Cancer is responsible for one fourth of the total deaths and is the second leading cause of death, behind heart disease, in the United States. However, there are as many approaches to curing cancer as there are types of cancer. One important issue in solid tumors is hypoxia, a lack of oxygen, which promotes angiogenesis and anaerobic metabolism, which can increase cancer progression and metastasis. The HIF transcription factor is responsible for the mediation of many processes involved during hypoxia and is linked to poor patient prognosis, increased cancer progression, and invasiveness of tumors. With this in mind, the HIF pathway has become an attractive target for small molecule inhibition. Herein, we describe the design and synthesis of small molecules that inhibit the HIF pathway. These compounds are based off an initial “hit” compound, KCN-1, from screening of a 10,000 compound library. KCN1 is both highly effective and has a low toxicity profile. Over 200 compounds have been synthesized by the Wang lab, with the best compound IVSR64b having an IC50 of 0.28 μM. Of special interest is that these compounds do not appear to have any inherent toxicity toward healthy tissues, but only affect cancer cells. Moreover, x-ray crystal structures for both KCN-1 and IVSR64b were obtained and used as the basis for computational modeling, which is still in progress.

The present technological focus in education is requiring teachers to become computer-literate so that they are better able to integrate computer technology into their teaching. This thesis examines teachers' leves of computer self-efficacy (one's belief in one's ability to use computers) to see if there is a correlation with computer self-efficacy and classroom practice. Current research suggest that one can use computer self-efficacy as a way of determing teachers' levels of willingness to use computers. Based on the distribution of a computer self-efficacy scale and a questionnaire designed to identify computer technology integration into teaching, this study shows the correlation between computer self-efficacy and classroom practice in a selection of schools in southern Alberta. The finding of the research show that there is a weak correlation (r=0.405) between CSE and classroom practice; while there is a moderate to strong correlation (r=0.62) between CSE and instructional practice. Interestingly, the correlations between CSE and each of the specific classroom uses listed in the survey were extremely weak. These correlation coefficients ranged from 0.0777-0.287. Only 14/87 of the teachers surveyed have not attended a computer course. However, out of those 14 teachers only 2 do not use the computer for classroom used. On the other hand, of the 73 teachers who have attended a computer course, 16 do not use the computer in classroom teaching. For this group of teachers, participating in a computer course did not appear to have an impact on classroom practice. Moreover, the reseach found that those teachers with high levels of CSE do not necessarily teach using computers. An exploration of change literature provides a framework for understanding these results, and help place in perspective the need to rethink guidelines for professional development, teacher education and classroom practice as they relate to computers in education.
