Abstract We evaluated three desktop instruments suitable for decentralizing the assays of blood cholesterol and triglycerides to satellite and physician's office testing. The instruments, Ektachem DT 60 (E), Reflotron (R), and Seralyzer (S), were used according to their manufacturers' instructions to assay serum or capillary blood from outpatients at two physicians offices. Accuracy was assessed in the centralized laboratory by using an automated centrifugal analyzer (A). The bias of A was monitored with an international quality-control material. We found all instruments easy to handle. Regression equations for cholesterol determinations were: E = 0.92A + 0.7 (n = 331, r = 0.94), R (capillary blood) = 0.96A + 0.3 (n = 256, r = 0.95), and S = 0.93A + 0.6 (n = 260, r = 0.92). For triglycerides we obtained E = 1.02A (n = 331, r = 0.97), R (cap. blood) = 0.88A (n = 213, r = 0.97), R = 0.94A + 0.1 (n = 90, r = 0.99), and S = 0.96A (n = 266, r = 0.98). Duplicate and within-day precision was less than 8%. Between-day precision (during a month) was less than 10%. We stress the need of both laboratory and field evaluation and emphasize the benefit of quality control.

331 Background: Statins have been shown to possess antiproliferative activity in-vitro. Synergism with multiple drug combinations has been of great interest in pancreatic cancer. We examined 2 in-vitro cell models for synergism using a combination of fluvastatin and nab-paclitaxel. Methods: Pancreatic cancer cell lines Mia-Paca-2 (MP2) and Su86 were cultivated and seeded to 25,000 cells/mL and subsequently grown in 96 well plates for 24 hours. The cells were then treated with a fixed concentration of fluvastatin in 9 rows, 8 receiving serial 1:2 dilutions 16 times in triplicate of nab-paclitaxel, 1 fluvastatin only row, and 1 untreated. Upon dosing cells were incubated for 72 hrs. Cellular proliferation was determined by sulforhodamine B proliferation assays and read at 570 nm. A nab-paclitaxel only assay was done as well for comparison. Results: The lowest inhibitory concentration of fluvastatin in combination with nab-paclitaxel was between 500-600 micro mole (mm). Fluvastatin alone at these concentrations attenuated cellular proliferation. Synergism was seen on IC50 curves that are available. Anti-proliferative effects were reduced by 1:256 dilution. Conclusions: Preliminary studies show fluvastatin has an in-vitro anti proliferative effect on Su86 and MP2 cells and synergism in combination with nab-paclitaxel. Fluvastatin is more cytotoxic in Su86 than MP2. Future experimental design will focus on in-vivo models.

Abstract Introduction Chronic neutrophilic leukemia (CNL) and atypical chronic myeloid leukemia (aCML) are rare myeloproliferative and myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms. So far, the diagnosis of CNL and aCML has been based on cytomorphology and the absence of JAK2V617F and PDGFR rearrangements. Recently, mutations in CSF3R and SETBP1 were identified and associated with CNL and aCML, respectively. Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) and aCML also share several characteristics and need to be discriminated especially by the absolute number of monocytes in the peripheral blood. Aim To determine the frequency of CSF3R mutations (CSF3Rmut) in CNL, aCML, and CMML and to investigate a mutation pattern, cytogenetics and clinical data in all three entities. Patients and Methods To first delineate patients with potential CNL, we investigated blood and bone marrow smears and depicted patients with a white blood cell count >25x109/L, neutrophils >80%, immature granulocytes <10%, <1% myeloblasts and hypercellular bone marrow (according to WHO 2008). BCR-ABL1 fusion transcript, JAK2 and MPL mutations were excluded in all cases by RT-PCR and melting curve analyses. Indication for PDGFR rearrangements was precluded by over-expression analyses of PDGFRA and PDGFRB by quantitative real-time PCR, resulting in a final cohort of 20 cases declared as CNL patients. Additional 60 aCML and 252 CMML patients were included. Cytogenetics was available in 330/332 cases. Mutations in CSF3R exons 14 and 17 (n=332), in ASXL1 exon 13 (n=321), and the mutational hot spots in SETBP1 (n=331) and SRSF2 (n=320) were analyzed by Sanger sequencing. Results In the total cohort of 332 patients we detected CSF3R mutations in 11 cases (3.3%). 8/11 cases showed a p.Thr618Ile mutation in exon 14, four of them carried an additional nonsense/frame-shift mutation in exon 17. One additional patient was mutated in p.Thr615Ala and showed a nonsense mutation in exon 17. Two cases showed a mutation in exon 17 only, one a nonsense the other a frame-shift mutation, respectively. Analyzing the mutation frequencies within the different entities revealed a clustering of CSF3Rmut within CNL cases with 7 of 20 (35%) mutated cases in contrast to 2 of 60 (3.3%; p=0.001) aCML and 2 of 252 (0.8%; p<0.001) CMML cases. Cytogenetics in CSF3Rmut cases showed that 9/11 cases had a normal karyotype and only one aCML patient harbored a del(3q) and one CMML patient a complex karyotype. Mutations in the three other analyzed genes ASXL1, SETBP1 and SRSF2 were detected in the total cohort in 156/321 (49%), 34/331 (10%), and 149/330 (45%) patients, respectively. Analyses regarding concomitant mutations of CSF3R with ASXL1, SETBP1 or SRSF2 revealed no additional mutation in two cases. In 8 of 11 parallel analyzed CSF3Rmut patients an ASXL1mut was identified, SETBP1 as well as SRSF2 were mutated in 3 of the 11 cases. Notably, the 7 CSF3Rmut within the CNL group had no mutation in SETBP1. Analysis of mutational loads in CNL showed that 6/7 CSF3Rmut had a higher mutational load than the second mutated gene (range: 25-50% vs. 10-30%). In one case both mutated genes had equal mutational loads (40%). In contrast, in CMML and aCML 3/4 patients had lower mutational loads in CSF3Rmut than in the additional mutated genes (20-50% vs. 40-50%), while also one case showed equal mutational loads in the mutated genes (50%). Combining the mutational results of these four genes indicate a specific and individual molecular pattern for these three different entities. While ASXL1 is frequently mutated in all entities (CNL: 8/11 (73%); aCML: 38/59 (64%); CMML: 110/251 (44%)), SRSF2 shows the highest mutation frequency in CMML cases (121/251; 48%), followed by aCML (24/60; 40%) and CNL (4/19; 21%). In contrast, SETBP1 is often mutated in aCML (19/60; 32%) and rarely in CMML (13/252; 5%) and CNL (2/19; 10.5%) patients. In addition, CSF3R is much more associated with the CNL cases (35%) and less frequently found in aCML (2%) and CMML (1%). Conclusion 1) CNL, aCML and CMML are related diseases and difficult to distinguish by cytomorphology alone and therefore require additional diagnostic criteria, i.e. molecular mutations. 2) ASXL1 is the most frequently mutated gene in these entities and thus can help to prove clonality. 3) SETBP1 much more closely relates to aCML and SRSF2 to CMML. 4) Mutations in the novel marker CSF3R are closely related to CNL and thus qualify as a new molecular marker for diagnosis of CNL. We investigated effect of A59V polymorphism in the leptin gene on length of pregnancy. Blood was collected from 255 Holstein cattles belonging to four different herd managements in Isfahan province. Genomic DNA extracted from whole blood. Genotypes of A59V locus were identified PCR-RFLP technique. Amplified region is located in exon three of leptin gene. The genomic bovine leptin sequences, which consist of three exons, were obtained from Gene Bank (Accession number U50365). The polymerase chain reaction was used to amplify the 331 bp DNA fragments from genomic DNA. The PCR reaction contained 100 ng of genomic DNA, 0.3 µM of each primer, 1.5 mM MgCl2, 200 µM dNTP, 10mM Tris HCl, 50 mM KCl and 1 U Taq-polymerase in total volume of 20 µL. Sequences of primers that were used in PCR were reported previously by Haegeman et al. (2000). Conditions for PCR were 94°C for 2 min, followed by 35 cycles of 94°C for 30 s, 55°C for 1 min, and 72°C for 30 s. Followed by final extension for at for 15 min 72°C. Digestion of PCR product of 331 bp with 5 U of HphI (Fermentas) in 20 µL of reaction volume at 37°c for 8 h and analyzed on 8% no denature polyacrylamyde gel. Allele A in the A59V locus was the allele not digested by restriction enzyme, allele B was the restriction enzyme-digested PCR product. Digestion revealed 3 genotypes, AA (331 bp), AB (331, 311, and 20 bp), and BB (311 and 20 bp). Significances of the genotype effects were estimated by GLM procedure of SAS. This study showed that genotype effect on length of pregnancy were significant (P<0.01). Animals homozygous for allele A had higher length of pregnancy ((P<0.01, AA=279.17±0.47, AB=276.96±0.57, BB=274.8±2.2).

Strategies to reduce the adverse environmental costs of anaesthesia include choice of agent and fresh gas flows. The current preferences of Australian and New Zealand anaesthetists are unknown. We conducted a survey of Australian and New Zealand anaesthetists to determine the use of volatiles, nitrous oxide and intravenous anaesthesia, lowest fresh gas flow rates, automated end-tidal volatile control, and the rationales for these choices. The survey was answered by 359/1000 (36%), although not all questions and multiple responses within single questions were answered by all respondents. Sevoflurane was preferred by 246/342 (72%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 67%–77%), followed by propofol, 54/340 (16%, 95% CI 12%–20%), desflurane 39/339 (12%, 95% CI 8%–16%) and isoflurane 3/338(1%, 95% CI 0–3%). When asked about all anaesthetics, low-risk clinical profile was the most common reason given for using sevoflurane (129/301 (43%, 95% CI 37%–49%)), reduced postoperative nausea for propofol (297/318 (93%, 95% CI 90%–96%)) and faster induction/awakening times for desflurane (46/313 (79%, 95% CI 74%–83%)). Two-thirds (226/340 (66%, 95% CI 61%–71%)) of respondents used nitrous oxide in 0–20% of general anaesthetics. Low fresh gas flow rates for sevoflurane were used by 310/333 (93%, 95% CI 90%–95%) and for 262/268 (98%, 95% CI 95%–99%) for desflurane. Automated end-tidal control was used by 196/333 (59%, 95% CI 53%–64%). The majority of respondents (>70%) preferred sevoflurane at low flows. These data allow anaesthetists to consider further whether changes are required to the choices of anaesthetic agents for environmental, financial, or any other reasons.

Background Muscle flexibility is a main component of health-related fitness and one of the basic components of fitness for the performance in some sports. Sport and health professionals require the flexibility profile of soccer to define quantitative aims in the training of flexibility. The aim of this study was to identify age-related differences in lower extremity flexibility in youth soccer players. Methods Seventy-two young male soccer players (age: 13.0 ± 3.1 y; body mass: 50.5 ± 15.3 kg; stature 158.2 ± 16.8 cm; BMI: 19.6 ± 2.6 kg/m2) completed this study. Measures of eleven passive hip (hip extension (HE), hip adduction with hip flexed 90°(HAD-HF90°), hip flexion with knee flexed (HF-KF) and extended (HF-KE), hip abduction with hip neutral (HAB) and hip flexed 90°(HAB-HF90°), hip external (HER) and internal (HIR) rotation), knee (knee flexion (KF)) and ankle dorsiflexion (ankle dorsiflexion with knee flexed (ADF-KF) and extended (ADF-KE)) ranges of motion (ROM) were taken. Descriptive statistics were calculated for hip, knee and ankle ROM measured separately by leg (dominant and non-dominant) and age-group (U10, U12, U14, U16 and U19). The data was analysed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to examine the interaction of 11 ROM in the different players’ age-group. Results Generally, U10 and/or U12 soccer players obtain the highest mean value in almost all ROM evaluated (U10: HAD-HF [39.6° ± 4.3°], ADF-KE [32.3° ± 4.1°], HER [63.5° ± 5.6°] and HAB-HF90°[64.1° ± 7.5°]; U12: HE [17.7° ± 6.2°], HAB [35.6° ± 3.0], HIR [60.8° ± 4.7°] and KF [133.8° ± 7.1°]). Nonetheless, significant differences between the players’ age-groups are just found in HAD-HF90°(p = .042; ES = .136), HAB (p = .001; ES = .252), HIR (p = .001; ES = .251), HER (p < .001; ES = .321) and HAB-HF90°(p < .001; ES = .376) ROM, showing a progressive and irregular decrease in these ROM until the U19 team. Conclusion The findings of this study reinforce the necessity of prescribing exercises aimed at improving HAD-HF90° ROM in U16, HAB ROM in U14, HIR ROM in U16 and U19, HER ROM in U12 and U19, and HAB-HF90° ROM in U16 and U19 players within everyday soccer training routines.

One obstacle that can limit the growth and production of rice is low water availability. Therefore, a comprehensive study of the response of rice plants to drought is very important. The study was conducted in the greenhouse of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Agriculture, Diponegoro University, from April to August 2016. The study used a 3 x 3 factorial design with 3 replications. The first factor is three types of rice (Sidenuk, Way Apo Buru, Pepe) and the second factor is water stress treatment (KA <field capacity = enough water, field capacity (KL), water saturation (JA). The observed parameters are protein content, leaf levels rolling (number of leaves rolled), relative water content (RWC), water use efficiency (WUE), N, P, K uptake, rice protein content decreases with increasing water supply. The relative water content of rice plants decreases with increasing stress water that occurs in the limited water supply for the three types of rice Sidenuk rice has the lowest N seed content (2.1%) compared to Way Apo (3.0%) and Pepe (3.1%). The mineral content of P in both biomass and seeds is not really influenced by water stress, as well as K content of seeds. Na presente pesquisa, elegemos o binômio nāḇî\' e miṯnabbê como janela de observação para um estudo interdisciplinar dos fenômenos proféticos na Bíblia Hebraica, utilizando contribuições de diversas disciplinas. Nosso objetivo foi o de discutir uma questão que está sobre a mesa de debates dos pesquisadores, possuindo uma bibliografia que é vasta, porém inconclusiva A dificuldade dos scholars em afirmar em que medida o binômio nāḇî\'/miṯnabbê descreve ou não fenômenos distintos torna a questão complexa e instigante. Os capítulos do trabalho acompanham o recorte do estudo, que é composto por quatro narrativas: Nm 11, 1 Sm 10, Ez 13 e Mq 3. A forma participial miṯnabbê descreve o comportamento dos anciãos em face do nāḇî\' Moisés (Nm 11), a performance de Saul diante de um ḥeḇel neḇiʼim (grupo de profetas) em êxtase e ao som de música (1 Sm 10), bem como a atividade das profetisas-miṯnabb ͤ ʼōṯ, cuja racionalidade (designada pelo termo lêḇ, \"coração\") obstinada (šrr) é criticada pelo nāḇî\' Ezequiel (Ez 13). A condição profética dos anciãos e de Saul se relaciona com a vinda do ruaḥ (sopro, espírito) divino. The heterogeneity of the Israelite prophecy can be approached from several ways. In this study, we chose the binomial nāḇî\' and miṯnabbê as an observation window to an interdisciplinary study of the prophetic phenomena in the Hebrew Bible, using input from several disciplines. Our goal was to discuss an issue that is present in the current discussions of researchers, having a bibliography that is extensive but inconclusive. The difficulty researchers have to state to which extent the binomial nāḇî\'/miṯnabbê describes or not distinct phenomena makes the issue complex and instigating. The chapters of this work follow the scope of the study, which consists of four narratives: Nu 11, 1 Sa 10, Eze 13 and Mic 3. The participial form miṯnabbê describes the behavior of elders in the face of nāḇî\' Moses (Nu 11), the performance of Saul before a ḥeḇel neḇiʼim (group of prophets) in ecstasy and at the sound of music (1 Sa 10), as well as the activity of the prophetesses - miṯnabb ͤ ʼōṯ, whose obstinate (šrr) rationality (designated by the term lêḇ,\"heart\") is criticized by the nāḇî\' Ezekiel (Eze 13). The prophetic condition of the elders and Saul relates to the coming of the divine ruaḥ (blow, spirit). The noun nāḇî\' is emphasized also in the criticism about the payment of the prophet eager to cheat (šeqer) and to \"bite\" (nōšek) profitsand benefits(Mic 3). Through the examination of these passages, we raised discussions that resulted in a critical commentary on the Israelite prophecy, which highlights the opening of research possibilities raised by the binomial nāḇî\'/miṯnabbê

Thucydides and Tacitus are both uncomfortable authors whose unsparing commitment to revealing the truth results in grim depictions of the amoral deployment of political power—power for the sake of power—in idiosyncratic and difficult idioms. However, Tacitus never announces a program of Thucydides-imitation, whether pertaining to methodology or theme. Nor do ancient commentators link Tacitus to his Greek predecessor. Nevertheless, the two are much alike in important aspects of their historiographical achievements. The chapter explores a pair of passages in which the two historians treat one of history’s “repeating events”—defection from an imperial power. In examining the narratives of the Mytilenean and Batavian revolts (Thuc. 3.2–6, 8–18, 23–33, 35–50; Tac. H. 4.12–37, 54–79, 5.14–26), it gives due attention to “each new permutation of circumstances,” the important proviso that Thucydides attaches to his prediction about recurrence (3.82.2).

The fourth gospel presents the reader with an early christian text in which women and men are treated as "a discipleship of equals" as this term is broadly understood in the work of Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza but qualified with respect to her discussion of the meaning of 'equality' when applied to gender. Specifically, the gospel contains six examples of "gender pairs" of characters (a widely-accepted lukan feature). The members of each pair are portrayed in a parallel or contrasting faith encounter with the Johannine Jesus which is of substantial theological importance to the gospel's stated purpose (John 20:31). The six pairs are the mother of Jesus (2:1-11) and the royal official (4:46-54); nicodemus (3:1-12) and the samaritan woman (4:4-42); the man born blind (9:1-41) and Martha (11:1-54); Mary of Bethany and Judas (12:1-8); the mother of Jesus and the beloved disciple (19:25-27); Mary Magdalene (20:11-18) and Thomas (20:24-29).

Elia 1934: 341–4. The excavation of this house began from the rear of House I 10,2–3, and the area of the latrine and kitchen. Later excavation proceeded from the upper storey in the front of the house. The recording was possibly less careful than in the larger houses in the insula which were considered more important. For example, Elia did not mention any of the finds from here. Since excavation, the house has been used as a workshop for the gardeners and labourers working on the site but was being restored in 2001. No recorded finds. Vases of various types. i. Preserved h.: c.1.2 m; diam.: c.240 mm; neck diam.: c.100 mm. Fabric: orange, relatively fine. Description: Amphora with a pointed base, cylindrical body, and marked shoulder. Strap handles attached to the shoulder and neck. Large rolled, and vertically flattened, rim. Present location: one left in situ, others unknown, possibly left in room 10. Not inventoried at time of excavation. Discussion: Arthur identifies the remaining amphora as an unprovenanced Italian wine amphora, of form Dressel 1B. He notes that the type was late Republican, the latest dated examples of which bear the consular date for 13 bc (CIL, xv. 4539 and 4575). He therefore notes that this amphora is of considerable interest as it survived in use for at least ninety years after its date of manufacture. Arthur suggests that its longevity, perhaps explained by its use as a container for an ageing vintage, adds a note of caution to the adoption of single artefacts for the dating of archaeological contexts. Abstract registered or re-registered in Northern Ireland from 1 April 19612 to 30 June 1983.3 From 1 July 1983 in Northern Ireland, no company can be formed as, or become, a company limited by guarantee with a share capital.4 It was contemplated in the Companies (Northern Ireland) Order 1981 (SI 1981/838 (NI 19)), art 10(1),5 that a company could be registered as a company limited by guarantee with a share capital on or after 1 July 1983 if the application to register it had been made before that date. Re-registration of an existing company limited by guarantee with a share capital to change it from private to public or public to private also appears to be possible. In addition, from 1 April 1961 to 23 September 1986, the articles of association of any company could adopt all or any of the regulations contained in Northern Ireland 1960 Table A, Part 1, or, from 1 April 1961 to 30 June 1983, Northern Ireland 1960 Table A, Part 2.6 From 1 April 1961 to 23 September 1986, on the registration of an existing non-Companies Acts company under the Companies Act (Northern Ireland) 1960, part 8 (ss 332–347), as a company limited by guarantee with a share capital, its existing constitution was treated as its memorandum and articles of association,7 subject to the statutory requirement of being in accordance with Northern Ireland 1960 Table D or as near thereto as circumstances admitted.8

The formation of allylic Grignard reagents can be inefficient because the excess reactive halide tends to couple with the Grignard reagent as it forms. Brandon L. Ashfeld of the University of Notre Dame found (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 2427) a simple solution to this problem: inclusion of a catalytic amount of the inexpensive Cp2 TiCl2 to mediate the addition of 18 to 17. Brian T. Connell of Texas A&M University demonstrated (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 7826) that with Mn, 21 could be added to 20. The acetate 21 is thus an easily prepared homoenolate equivalent. Note that although 21 is an E/Z mixture, the product 22 is cleanly Z. Gérard Cahiez of the Université de Paris 13 reported (Synlett 2010, 299) a detailed study of the Cu-catalyzed coupling of 24 with 23. Without supporting ligands, slow addition (syringe pump, 1 h) of 24 to 23 assured clean formation of 25. Manual slow addition (dropping funnel, 15 min) was not effective.

ABSTRACT This field trip examines the results of integrated geologic studies of the 9 August 2020, Mw 5.1 earthquake near Sparta, North Carolina, USA. The earthquake generated ~4 km of coseismic surface rupture of the Little River fault and uplifted a surface area of ~11 km2. The Little River fault is a thrust fault oriented 110–130°/45–70°SW, and mapped fault segments are en echelon with scarp heights from &lt;5–30 cm. The epicenter is in polydeformed rocks of the Ashe and Alligator Back Metamorphic Suites in the eastern Blue Ridge. Bedrock structure formed during multiple Paleozoic orogenies; the regional foliation strikes NE-SW and dips SE (mean orientation 063°/52°SE). Mapping identified late Paleozoic veins and shear zones, a regional joint set striking 330–340° and 250–240°, and brittle faults that cut the Paleozoic foliation. Brittle faults oriented similar to the Little River fault are mapped up to 4 km along strike from the coseismic rupture along Bledsoe Creek valley, and the combined length of the Little River fault system is ~8 km. Paleoseismic trenches across the Little River fault corroborate the reactivation of an older fault by the 2020 earthquake and reveal two events during late Pleistocene (&lt;50 ka). Surficial mapping identified several terrace deposits, including a deposit along Bledsoe Creek that yielded a 26Al/10Be isochron burial age of 0.46 ± 0.13 Ma and overlies a brittle fault, thus constraining the timing of movement of the fault at that location. Paleoliquefaction studies document soft-sediment deformation features in alluvium that may represent paleoseismic events. Collectively, these results highlight long-lived paleoseismicity of the Blue Ridge and that the 9 August 2020 earthquake reactivated an older, suitably oriented brittle fault in the bedrock. The Little River fault is an example of a previously unknown but active fault lying outside of known seismic zones with demonstrated recurrence of paleo-ruptures, raising questions about the assumption that damaging earthquakes are limited to areas of ongoing background seismicity, which is counter to seismic hazard assessments in the eastern United States. Bedrock mapping separates eastern Blue Ridge lithostratigraphy of the Lynchburg Group and Ashe and Alligator Back Metamorphic Suites into separate fault-bound packages juxtaposed over various 1.3–1.0 Ga basement rocks of the northern French Broad massif by the Gossan Lead fault.

Introduction: Huntington’s Disease (HD) is a dominant genetic neurodegenerative pathology, with full penetrance, characterized by the CAG expansion of the huntingtin gene on chromosome 4, leading to neuronal death due to protein accumulation, which generates clinical presentation of motor, cognitive and psychiatric symptoms, especially Huntington’s chorea. Objectives: To describe the epidemiological profile of mortality from HD in Brazil between the years 2011 to 2020. Methods: This work is an epidemiological investigation study of HD mortality between the years 2011 to 2020. Data were collected from the Mortality Information System of DATASUS. Data were organized and analyzed using the Jamovi® statistical software. Results: 1,049 deaths from HD were confirmed in the analyzed period. Regarding the temporal analysis of deaths from HD, an average of 105 (±33.1) annual cases. There was a predominance of deaths in the Southeast compared to other regions of the country, concentrating 505 (41% of the total). Among deaths from HD, there was a higher prevalence of female deaths, with 583 deaths (55.5% of total). Regarding age, there was a predominance of deaths in the age group from 50 to 59 years old, totaling 311 (29.6% of the total). In regards to education, the deaths of individuals with 8 to 11 years of schooling were more prevalent, totaling 251 (23.9% of the total). In respect of skin color, white individuals accounted for the largest share of deaths, accounting 735 (70.0% of the total). Conclusion: The results found an annual average of deaths increasing and dispersed, which may reflect a greater sensitivity of diagnostic methods, requiring further studies to confirm this association. Regarding the epidemiological profile, there was a higher prevalence in women, from the Southeast, aged over 50 years and with more years of education.

Determinant for the foot mechanics study, it provides objective data related to the body center of gravity distribution and, implicitly, to the possible dysfunctions at the spinal column level. Purpose Relying on some case studies, the present paper aims at using the electronic baropodometry, as an efficient modality to objectify the vertebral column dysfunctions in performance girl gymnasts, by considering their high incidence in this sports branch, with negative effects on the quality of life. Content In our study, we used the FootscanSystem device (developed by the Belgian Company "RSscan International") based on the Footscan Software 7.97 Gait 2nd Generation, to determine the plantar pressure distributions in the bipodal static situation and during the gate support phase. We conducted our research at "Dr. Nicolae Rob&#259;nescu" National Medical Center for Children's Rehabilitation in Bucharest and our subjects were the girl gymnasts from the Sports Club of UNEFS Bucharest. Abstract This paper proposes a nonconventional substructure of a fixed offshore wellhead platform that can support a reasonably large deck required for housing 8 wells and rigless well-intervention equipment. The large deck area is considered to avoid hiring of costly jack-up rig or lift boat. Unlike conventional jackets, some conductor guides/sleeves are modified like jacket legs, however, conductors are kept axially free to move through the sleeves. The mudmats are modified to include in the overall load-bearing capacity of the structure. The lower deck (41m × 25m) will accommodate all production equipment and the upper deck will be reserved mainly for temporary well-intervention equipment. Structural design is performed for the proposed platform at 33m water depth due to wave, wind and current loads. Simulated collapse analyses show adequate reserve strength for the structure against extreme wave loads along different directions. The proposed design can provide significantly larger deck space that may be reserved for temporary well-intervention equipment compared to conventional designs without considerable increase of structural steel.

Анотація:
The main source of many zoonotic infections is soil contaminated with dog feces. The urban external environment is a special space the local areas of which (parks, squares, yard spaces) happen to be significantly polluted by dog excrements, especially in spring. Feces of infected dogs left in urban areas represent a source of contamination by causative agents of soil-transmitted parasitic infections. The purpose of this research was to determine the distribution of parasitic pathogens in dog feces collected in urban areas. We collected and examined 492 samples of dog feces in Moscow and Zhukovsky for 2022 and 2023. The study was carried out in spring after the snow melted. The feces were studied by a combined flotation method with a sodium nitrate solution with density of 1.38. Causative agents of parasitic diseases were found in 2.6% of the fecal samples. Toxocara canis (1.2%), Sarcocystis sp. (0.6%), Isospora sp. (0.4%), Toxascaris leonina (0.2%) and Giardia sp. (0.2%) were found in the dogs. Toxocara and giardia are dangerous to humans. Our results confirm the data obtained by other researchers that indicate a high Toxocara infection rate in dogs and a high level of urban soil contamination with T. canis eggs.

Chronic mountain sickness (CMS), syndrome with manifestations of hypoventilation, hypoxemia, hyperviscosity, polycythemia, pulmonary hypertension, and right ventricular hypertrophy, is a recent history inthe western Himalyas (42675888 m asl). Six well defined subjects studied revealed: significant increasein fibrinogen (400±37 vs normal 275 ± 33 mg/dl), Hct(74.3±3.1 vs 45.2±3.2%) and Hb (23.1±2.6 vs 17.9±0.8g/dl); significant decrease in APTT (27.1±5.2 vs 54.6±7.9 sec), platelets (177.8±10.9 vs 197.4±19.3 thous/cmm), ELT (165±75 vs 399±48 min) and ESR (3.5±2.5 vs 6.0±3.5 mm/1 hr); and absolute eosinophil counts (465±69 vs 384±106). An accelerated Cell mediated immunity (CMI), in them, was evident by 'Spontaneous Flare', 4 + DNCB (di-nitro-chloroben- zene)-phenomenon and profuse lymphocyte recruitment in dermis.Theseresults indicate a state of hypercoagulability inCMS. Muscularisation and thrombosis of pulmonary arteris do occur in CMS. Accelerated CMI and augmented fibrinolytic activity in CMS account for its protracted course (8-25 months) to develop. Yogic breathing, acetazolamide, aspirin and evacuation to low heightshave a salutary effect. Steroids, medroxyprogesterone and phlebotomy bring reflief to these subjuects. Oxygen therapy, in CMS, has no role.

ЦЕЛЬ: представить клинический случай пациента с остеопорозом на фоне первичного гиперпаратиреоза вследствие дистопии паращитовидной железы (ПЩЖ) с сохраняющейся гиперкальциурией после хирургического лечения. МАТЕРИАЛЫ И МЕТОДЫ: пациентка 63 лет обратилась с жалобами на боли в костях. В анамнезе хронический гастрит, артериальная гипертензия. Менопауза с 51 года. МКБ и переломы в анамнезе отрицала. При проведении денситометрии выявлен остеопороз (Ткр –4,4 L2), при нормальном уровне кальция, фосфора, креатинина, пациентке были назначены бисфосфонаты, кальций 1000 мг и вит Д 2000 Ед/сутки, которые принимала 2 года. Через 2 года обратилась для контроля. РЕЗУЛЬТАТЫ: наблюдалась положительная динамика денситометрии (Ткр – 3,1 L2), однако выявлен повышенный уровень кальция общего 2,58 (2,25-2,55) ммоль/л и паратгормона 165 (10-65) пг/мл, кальциурия 11,5 (2,5-7,5) ммоль/сутки при сниженном уровне витамина Д 26. Фосфор, щелочная фосфатаза, креатинин и скорость клубочковой фильтрации находились в пределах референсных значений. Сцинтиграфия ПЩЖ не выявила признаков трансформации ПЩЖ. Гиперпаратиреоз был расценен как вторичный на фоне недостаточности витамина Д. Дальнейшее наблюдение пациентки состоялось через год. Выявлена отрицательная динамика денситометрии (Ткр – 3,8 L2), уровень кальция ионизированного и паратгормона нарастали (1,64 ммоль/л и 867 пг/мл соответственно). Проведена повторная сцинтиграфия ПЩЖ – на уровне тела 1 грудного позвонка превертебрально, срединноретротрахеально и антевертебрально выявлена аденоматозная трансформация дистопированной ПЩЖ 8*9 мм. Проведено удаление верхней левой ПЩЖ с опухолью, гистологически в присланном материале обнаружена ткань щит железы с зобом. Спустя 3 месяца сохранялся повышенный уровень кальция 2,69 ммоль/л, кальция ионизированного 1,4 ммоль/л, паратгормона 150 пг/мл, витамин Д 34. Повторная сцинтиграфия указала на сохраняющуюся метаболически активную структуру на границе 1 и 2 грудных позвонков, после чего была проведена повторная операция - удаление дистопированной ПЩЖ. Отмечалась нормализация показателей: паратгормон 49,3 пг/мл, кальций ионизированный 1,14 ммоль/л, витамин Д 40, положительная динамика денситометрии через год – прирост + 4,8% (Ткр -2,8 L2). Однако сохраняется гиперкальциурия - кальций суточной мочи 10 ммоль/сутки при нормальных значениях уровня кальция 2,48 ммоль/л, паратгормона 57 пг/мл и витамина Д 39, что требует проведения дифференциально-диагностических проб и уточнения причины гиперкальциурии. ВЫВОДЫ: важным этапом диагностики и лечения остеопороза является исключение вторичных форм, являющихся следствием различных патологических состояний и заболеваний. Успешность этого процесса во многом определяется информированностью врачей различных специальностей (в первую очередь эндокринологов) и возможностью длительного наблюдения за пациентом.

The fibrinolytic response to venous occlusion was assessed in pregnant women with measurements of total and free t-PA, using specific ELISAs based on monoclonal antibodies.Total t-PA levels increased after venous occlusion with 11±8 ng/ml (mean ± SD) in healthy fertile non-pregnant women (n=6), with 0.8 ± 1.3 ng/ml in 2nd trim. (n=5) and with 3.8 ± 3.9 ng/ml in 3rd trim. (n=4) healthy pregnant women. The increase in free t-PA was 12 ± 11; 1.2 ± 0.9 and 0 ng/ml respectively. The difference in post- and pre-occlusion levels in 3rd trim, pregnant women with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus IDDM (n=4) was 3.2 ± 4.2 ng/ml, with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) (n=4) 2.6 ± 3.0 ng/ml and with preeclampsia (n=5) 3.2 ± 3.5 ng/ml for total t-PA and 0, 0 and 0 ng/ml for free t-PA.Fibrin fragment D-dimer levels in plasma measured with a specific ELISA were 130 ± 36 ng/ml in healthy fertile non-pregnant women (n=8). A significant increase was found in 4 out of 5 1st trim., 25 out of 25 2nd trim, and 21 out of 22 3rd trim, normal pregnant women. In these groups, plasma levels were 340 ± 160, 400 ± 170 and 440 ± 220 ng/ml respectively.Fibronectin levels, measured with a Laurell electroimmunoassay and expressed as percentage of pooled human plasma (=330 yg/ml) were 83 ± 26% in 2nd trim, patients (n=24) and 102 ± 35% in 3rd trim, patients (n=17). Normal fibronectin levels were found in 4 patients with IDDM and in 6 with IUGR, whereas in 6 out of 8 preeclamptic patients significantly increased levels were observed.These results confirm, with the use of a newly developed free t-PA assay, that the fibrinolytic response to venous occlusion is completely inhibited in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. A reduced release of t-PA from the vessel wall during venous occlusion and/or an increased inhibition of released t-PA were observed. No difference was found in the fibrinolytic response between normal and complicated pregnancy. D-dimer levels are significantly elevated during pregnancy. Finally, the usefulness of fibronectin for the diagnosis of preeclampsia is confirmed.

Calcification in the abdominal artery and endothelial cell function of the peripheral veins were studied in the patients recieving maintenance hemodialysis for the chronic renal failure.The grade of calcification was expressed by the aortic calcification index (ACI) calculation from the abdominal CT scan films. The endothelial cell function was estimated from the release capasity for tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) and von Willebrand factor (vWF), and the fibrinolytic capacity (by ELT and fibrin plate lysis area) during 10-min venous occlusion (VO) of the cubital vein. The dialysed patients were divided into 4 groups according to the duration of hemodialysis : group A ; under 1 year (n=7), group B ; 1-4 years (n=14), group C ; 4-7 years (n=15) and group D ; 7-10 years (n=8).The level (X + SD) of vWF : Ag, vWF act. (RCoF) and t-PA in patients before VO were 439 ± 255(%),171 ± 42(%), 4.2 ± 0.6(ng/ml) in group A, 292 ± 157, 151 ± 35, 4.1 ± 1.2 in group B, 174 ± 114, 133 ± 47, 3.7 ± 0.8 in group C and 130 + 27, 66 ± 21, 3.1 ± 0.7 in group D, respectively. With the increase in the duration of hemodialysis, the release capacity for vWF and t-PA, and the fibrinolytic capacity during VO decreased regardless of the aggravation of fibrinolytic activity before VO, When the activity was estimated by ELT, Cl-inactivator resistant fibrinolytic activity and fibrin lysis area. These findings are thought to reflect the exhaustion of endotherial cells. In elder patients (60-80 years old), the release capacity for vWF and t-PA during VO decreased with the increase in the ACI level.It is conclude that the patients on chronic hemodialysis have a greater incidence of calcification of abdominal artery and lower function of endothelial cells in the cubital vein than non-dialysed control.

The development of unconventional hydrocarbon resources in the Norman Wells region of the Central Mackenzie Valley, Northwest Territories, has been explored by the energy industry. In early 2014, Conoco-Philips Canada conducted two multi-stage test operations of hydraulic fracturing (HF) in the region. In this study, we combine seismic data from the Canadian National Seismograph Network, four new stations established by the Northwest Territories Geoscience Office in collaboration with Natural Resources Canada in the Norman Wells region, and a local dense array installed by Conoco-Philips Canada to study the seismicity distribution during the pre-HF, HF and post-HF periods. We have identified and located 130 earthquakes within 100 km of the geographic centre of the local seismic network near Norman Wells for the pre-HF period (11 September 2013 - 7 February 2014). In comparison, 231 events are located during the HF period (8 February 2014 - 10 March 2014), and for the two post-HF periods, 11 March 2014 - 31 July 2014 and 27 February 2015 - 31 December 2015, we have catalogued 255 and 138 events, respectively. The National Park Service (NPS) began monitoring landbirds at Channel Islands National Park in 1993 as part of its long-term inventory and monitoring program. The park’s landbird monitoring later became part of the NPS Inventory and Monitoring Division’s Mediterranean Coast Network long-term monitoring programs. Consequently, landbird monitoring has been conducted during every breeding season since 1993. In this report, we summarize data collected during the 2021 breeding season and we analyze trends in a select number of species. Landbird monitoring was conducted between 10 March and 22 May 2021. Using distance-based sampling methods in a standardized protocol, birds were counted on 334 of 338 permanent point count stations (99%) across the Channel Islands monitored for landbirds. These surveys were conducted at 29 of 33 points on Santa Barbara Island, 8 of 8 on East Anacapa Islet, 112 of 112 on Santa Cruz Island, 40 of 40 on San Miguel Island, and 145 of 145 on Santa Rosa Island. Four points on Santa Barbara Island were not counted due to nesting California Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) and Western Gulls (Larus occidentalis); 3 of 4 points (i.e., 17, 19, and 20) were also not counted in 2016–2021 to avoid disturbing breeding pelicans. This was the first monitoring season that the permanent line transects on Santa Barbara, East Anacapa, and San Miguel Islands were not surveyed. During the 2021 monitoring season, Channel Islands National Park decided to stop using line transects and focus on point count stations only, based on an external review of the landbird monitoring program. Fifty-six bird species were counted at point count stations across all of the islands in 2021. Parkwide, 40 of these species are breeders in Channel Islands National Park. Parkwide, the 10 most detected breeding landbirds in 2021 were, in descending order: Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrow, Bewick’s Wren, Orange-crowned Warbler, House Finch, Western Meadowlark, Horned Lark, Common Raven, Island Scrub-Jay, and Pacific-slope Flycatcher (scientific names in Table 2 and Appendix A). On East Anacapa Islet, 26 landbird species have been counted since 1993; 7 species were counted in 2021. No new transient species were detected in 2021; 6 transient or visiting species have been counted on the island overall since 1993. On Santa Barbara Island, 50 landbird species have been counted since 1993; 13 species were counted in 2021. Lincoln’s Sparrow was a new transient species counted in 2021 on Santa Barbara; 23 transient or visiting species have been counted on the island since 1993. On Santa Cruz Island, 78 landbird species have been counted since 2013; 45 species were counted in 2021. Hermit Warbler, Lawrence’s Goldfinch and Warbling Vireo were new transient species counted in 2021 on Santa Cruz Island; 21 transient or visiting species have been counted on this island since 2013. On San Miguel Island, 70 landbird species have been counted since 1993; 10 were counted in 2021. No transient species were counted in 2021; 32 transient or visiting species have been counted on the island since 1993. On Santa Rosa Island, 78 landbird species have been counted since 1994; 39 were detected in 2021. No new transient species were counted in 2021 on Santa Rosa; 21 transient or visiting species have been counted on the island since 1994. Nonnative and invasive birds were counted on only 1 of the 5 islands in 2021: 23 European Starlings on Santa Rosa Island. However, anecdotal sightings of nonnative species occurred more frequently (i.e., outside of survey times) on Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands in 2021. The highest numbers of nonnative species detections occurred on Santa Rosa Island, with 25 detections of Eurasian Collared Dove (primarily at the Historic Ranch), 18 detections of European Starling (Historic Ranch), 2 detections of Brown-headed Cowbird, and 1 Rock Pigeon detection (Historic Ranch). Other species were not reported by Channel Islands National Park landbird monitors or in eBird in 2021. This was the first annual monitoring report since the Coonan and Dye (2016) trend report to incorporate density estimates for particular species across Channel Islands National Park. Parkwide, 13 species were analyzed using the Distance Package in R. Of the 13 species analyzed, 5 had either increasing or decreasing densities from 2016 to 2021. All park islands except for Santa Barbara had a species that showed an increasing or decreasing trend from 2016 to 2021. Horned Lark and House Finch on San Miguel Island were the only species to show decreasing trends from 2016 to 2021, which is opposite from the trend presented by Coonan and Dye (2016).

Using distance-based sampling methods in a standardized protocol, birds were counted on 7 of 10 permanent line transects (70%) (2 of 3 on Santa Barbara Island, 1 of 1 on East Anacapa Island, and 4 of 5 on San Miguel Island). Two transects were not sampled in 2020 because of nesting California Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) on Santa Barbara Island (i.e., Canyons Transect) and reduced person hours and unfavorable winds on San Miguel Island (i.e., San Miguel Hill Transect). For point counts, 225 of 338 (67%) permanent stations were counted (i.e., 30 of 33 points on Santa Barbara Island, 8 of 8 on East Anacapa Island, 100 of 112 on Santa Cruz Island, 40 of 40 on San Miguel Island, and 47 of 145 on Santa Rosa Island). The 8 Prisoners? Cove points were not counted in 2020. Three points were not counted on Santa Barbara Island due to nesting pelicans: these points and the transect were also not counted in 2016?2019 to avoid disturbing breeding pelicans. Other points (i.e., on east Santa Cruz Island and Santa Rosa Island) were not counted due in large part to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Traveling to and from the park was only granted to essential NPS staff for the majority of the landbird season. Fifty-one bird species were counted from points and transects across all of the islands in 2020; 39 of these are breeding species on the island. Parkwide, the 10 most commonly detected breeding landbirds in 2020 were, in descending order: Horned Lark, Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Western Meadowlark, Orange-crowned Warbler, Bewick?s Wren, Island Scrub-Jay, House Finch, and Common Raven. On East Anacapa Island, 26 landbird species have been counted since 1993; 5 species were counted in 2020. No new transient species were detected in 2020; 10 transient or visiting species (nonbreeding, native species recorded only once or twice during surveys) have been counted on the island overall since 1993. On Santa Barbara Island, 49 landbird species have been counted since 1993; 15 species were counted in 2020. The highest number of Horned Lark since 1993 were counted in 2020 (n = 451). Warbling Vireo was a new transient species counted in 2020 on Santa Barbara; 30 transient or visiting species have been counted on the island since 1993. On Santa Cruz Island, 74 landbird species have been counted since 2013; 34 species were counted in 2020. Bullock?s Oriole was a new transient species counted in 2020 on Santa Cruz; 21 transient or visiting species have been counted on this island since 2013. On San Miguel Island, 69 landbird species have been counted since 1993; 14 were counted in 2020. No transient species were counted in 2020; 34 transient or visiting species have been counted on the island since 1993. On Santa Rosa Island, 75 landbird species have been counted since 1994; 26 were detected in 2020. Rose-breasted Grosbeak was a new transient species counted in 2020 on Santa Rosa Island; 30 transient or visiting species have been counted on the island since 1994. Across all the 5 islands, 3 transient or visiting bird species were newly counted in 2020, for a total of 77 such species counted since NPS monitoring began on the islands. Nonnative and invasive birds were counted on only 1 of the 5 islands in 2020: 4 European Starlings on Santa Rosa Island. However, anecdotal sightings of nonnative species occurred much more frequently (i.e., outside of the point and transect counts), and were made on all islands except Anacapa in 2020. The highest numbers of nonnative species detections occurred on Santa Cruz Island, with 33 detections of Eurasian Collared Dove (primarily at the Main Ranch area in the Central Valley), 15 detections of Brown-headed Cowbird (primarily at Scorpion Harbor), and 15 detections of European Starling (primarily at the Main Ranch and Scorpion Harbor). House Sparrows were observed fewer times, but on all islands except Anacapa; cowbirds occurred on all islands except Anacapa and San Miguel; and Rock Pigeon occurred on Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz Islands. In 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, 67% of all points and 77% of all transects were counted among the 5 islands. Santa Rosa received the lightest sampling of points (32%), due to the difficulty of getting observers onto the island. Even with diminished sampling, species richness (number of species) values fell in predictable patterns: richness was greatest on the larger islands (75 on Santa Rosa, 73 on Santa Cruz) and least on the smallest islands (26 on Anacapa, 48 on Santa Barbara). We continue to recommend that nonnative invasive species, such as European Starlings on Santa Rosa Island, be removed before their numbers become harder to manage. Also, because Distance analyses assist statistically with evaluations of trends, we continue to recommend that a trend analysis using program DISTANCE, or newer hierarchical distance analyses, should be used after the 2020 season to assess 5-year trends in breeding species? numbers following the 2015 trend analysis conducted by Coonan and Dye (2016).

Current dam discharge patterns in Noxon Rapids Reservoir reduce concentration and exposure times (CET) of herbicides used for aquatic plant management. Herbicide applications during periods of low dam discharge may increase herbicide CETs and improve efficacy. Applications of rhodamine WT dye were monitored under peak (736 to 765 m³ s⁻¹) and minimum (1.4 to 2.8 m³ s⁻¹) dam discharge patterns to quantify water-exchange processes. Whole-plot dye half-life under minimal discharge was 33 h, a 15-fold increase compared with the dye treatment during peak discharge. Triclopyr concentrations measured during minimum discharge within the treated plot ranged from 214 ± 25 to 1,243 ± 36 μgL⁻¹ from 0 to 48 h after treatment (HAT), respectively. Endothall concentrations measured during minimum discharge in the same plot ranged from 164 ± 78 to 2,195 ± 1,043 μgL⁻¹ from 0 to 48 HAT, respectively. Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.) occurrence in the treatment plot was 66%, 8%, and 14% during pretreatment, 5 wk after treatment (WAT), and 52 WAT, respectively. Myriophyllum spicatum occurrence in the nontreated plot was 68%, 71%, and 83% during pre-treatment, 5 WAT, and 52 WAT, respectively. Curlyleaf pondweed (Potamogeton crispus L.) occurrence in the treatment plot was 29%, 0%, and 97% during pretreatment, 5 WAT, and 52 WAT, respectively. Potamogeton crispus increased from 24% to 83% at 0 WAT to 52 WAT, respectively, in the nontreated plot. Native species richness declined from 3.3 species per point to 2.1 in the treatment plot in the year of treatment but returned to pretreatment numbers by 52 WAT. Native species richness did not change during the study in the nontreated reference plot. Herbicide applications during periods of low flow can increase CETs and improve control, whereas applications during times of high-water flow would shorten CETs and could result in reduced treatment efficacy.

Purpose/Background: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have an impact on health throughout the lifespan (Filletti et al., 1999; Hughes et al., 2017). These experiences range from physical and mental abuse, substance abuse in the home, parental separation or loss, financial instability, acute illness or injury, witnessing violence in the home or community, and incarceration of family members (Hughes et al., 2017). Understanding and screening for ACEs in children with urinary incontinence can help practitioners identify psychological stress as a potentially modifiable risk factor. Methods: A 5-month chart review was performed identifying English speaking patients ages 6-11 years presenting to the outpatient urology office for an initial visit with a primary diagnosis of urinary incontinence. Charts were reviewed for documentation of individual or family risk factors for ACEs exposure, community risk factors for ACEs exposures, and records where no related documentation was included. Results: For the thirty-nine patients identified, no community risk factors were noted in the charts. Seventy-nine percent of patients had one or more individual or family risk factors documented. Implications for Nursing Practice This chart review indicates that a significant percentage of pediatric, school-aged patients presenting with urinary incontinence have exposure to ACEs. A formal assessment for ACEs at the time of initial presentation would be helpful to identify those at highest risk. Harlequin ducks (Histrionicus histrionicus) are sea ducks that migrate inland each spring to nest along fast-flowing mountain streams. They are considered one of the most imperiled duck species in North America and occur in two distinct populations on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The Pacific coast population includes Washington State, where harlequin ducks breed in the Olympic, Cascade, and Selkirk Mountains. This species is designated as a Management Priority Species by the National Park Service within North Cascades National Park Service Complex (NOCA). This report summarizes harlequin duck surveys conducted during 15 years across a 27-year period (1990 and 2017) on major streams within NOCA, and incidental observations collected from 1968–2021. The primary objectives of these surveys were to 1) document the distribution and abundance of harlequin duck observations within NOCA boundaries, 2) describe productivity (number of broods and brood size), 3) describe breeding chronology of harlequin ducks, and 4) describe habitat characteristics of breeding streams. Sixty-eight stream surveys over 15 years resulted in observations of 623 individual harlequin ducks comprising various demographics, including single adults, pairs, and broods. In addition, we collected 184 incidental observations of harlequin ducks from visitors and staff between 1968–2021. Harlequin ducks were observed on 22 separate second- to sixth-order streams throughout NOCA across the entire 53-year span of data, both incidentally and during harlequin duck surveys by Park staff. Harlequin ducks were detected on 8 of the 13 streams that were actively surveyed. Excluding recounts, 88.7% (n = 330) of individual harlequin duck observations during surveys occurred in the Stehekin River drainage. Between all surveys and incidental observations, 135 unpaired females without broods were sighted across all NOCA waterways. Thirty-nine broods were recorded between NOCA surveys and incidental observations, with a mean brood size of 3.61 (± 1.44 SD; range = 2–10). Breeding pairs were recorded as early as April 5 and were seen on streams until June 15, a period of less than seven weeks (median: May 2), but most pairs were observed within a 3-week span, between April 26 and May 17. Single females (unpaired with a male, with (an)other female(s), or with a brood) were observed on streams between April 26 and August 25 (median: July 3), though most observations were made within a 5-week period between June 12 and July 19. Habitat data collected at adult harlequin duck observation sites indicate that the birds often used stream reaches with features that are characteristic of high-energy running water. While adults occupied all instream habitat types identified, non-braided rapids and riffles were used most frequently, followed by pools and backwaters. Larger instream substrate sizes (cobbles and boulders) were present at most observation sites. Adult harlequin ducks were more often found at locations that lacked visible drifting or lodged woody debris, but drift debris was a slightly more abundant debris type. The presence of gravel bars and at least one loafing site was common. Adult harlequin ducks were more often observed in association with vegetation that offered some cover over the channel, but not where banks were undercut. The average channel width at adult observation sites was 34.0 m (range: 6-80 m; n = 114) and 27.6 m (± 15.7 m; range: 10-60 m; n = 12) at brood observation sites. Compared to adult harlequin duck sites, broods were observed more frequently in low velocity habitat (pools, backwaters), but rarely in rapids. Cobble and boulder substrates were still the most dominant substrate type. Contrary to adult ducks, broods were observed most often observed in meandering stream channels, a morphology indicative of low gradient, low velocity stream reaches. Institutionen för akvatiska resurser (SLU Aqua) har på uppdrag av Havs- och vattenmyndigheten, utformat en indikator, Hållbart nyttjande av fisk- och skaldjursbestånd i kust och hav, för uppföljning av miljökvalitetsmålet ”Hav i balans samt levande kust och skärgård”. Indikatorn visar den övergripande statusen för svenska fisk- och skaldjursbestånd längs kusterna och i haven, och baseras på de årliga analyserna av enskilda fiskbestånds status i rapporten ”Fisk- och skaldjursbestånd i hav och sötvatten”, vilken redovisas på webbportalen Fiskbarometern (SLU Aqua 2024). Indikatorn anger om bestånden fiskas hållbart eller ej, vilket i och med denna rapport nu har gjorts för åren 2015-2023. I denna rapport presenteras en bedömning av indikatorns status för året 2023. Metoden för bedömningarna av nationellt förvaltade fisk- och skaldjursbestånd uppdaterades under 2022, vilket har medfört att indikatorn över andelen hållbara bestånd inte längre är fullt jämförbar mellan samtliga år i tidsserien. I en jämförelse i indikatorrapporten för bedömningsåret 2022 mellan den äldre och den uppdaterade metoden var dock skillnaderna i indikatorns status generellt små. I föreliggande rapport baseras indikatorn på den nya metoden och omfattar således endast resultat för bedömningsåren 2022 och 2023. Av de totalt 76 redovisade kust- och havslevande bestånden i rapporten "Fisk- och skaldjursbestånd i hav och sötvatten 2023” kunde en bedömning göras för 67 bestånd. Av de 76 redovisade bestånden klassades 31 (40,8 %) som ”hållbart nyttjande”, vilket är lägre än i rapporten från 2022 då andelen var 48,6 % (35 av 72). Endast bedömningsåret 2019 har visat en lägre andel av hållbart nyttjade bestånd (39,7%) än bedömningsåret 2023. Indikatorns status var högst i Bottenviken och Västerhavet (44,4 % i respektive bedömningsenhet), följt av Östersjön (29,2 %). Lägst andel bedömda bestånd klassade som ”hållbart nyttjande” noterades för i Bottenhavet (7,7 %). Motsvarande för bedömningsåret 2022 för Bottenviken, Västerhavet, Östersjön och Bottenhavet var 55,5 %, 48, 8%, 41,2 %, respektive 33,3 %. Anledningen till att den övergripande statusen försämrats beror bland annat på att europeisk skrubbskädda under 2023 har bedömts som ”ej hållbart nyttjande”, både i Västerhavet och i Östersjön, till skillnad mot 2022 då den bedömdes som ”hållbart nyttjande”. Motsvarade gäller också för sill/strömming i Bottenhavet och Bottenviken, liksom för tunga i Östersjön och kolmule i Västerhavet. Vidare har torskbeståndet i Skagerrak och Nordsjön delats upp i tre nya torskbestånd vilka samtliga har bedömts som ”ej hållbart nyttjande”. Utöver dessa förändringar har några bestånd gått från ”hållbart nyttjande” eller ”ej hållbart nyttjande” till ”bedömning ej möjlig” (till exempel braxen och piggvar i Östersjön). En högre andel bestånd med så kallad analytisk beståndsuppskattning (MSY- konceptet) ger en högre tillförlitlighet i den sammantagna bedömningen av de bestånd som redovisas i indikatorn. Sammantaget för alla fyra bedömningsenheter 2023 var andelen bestånd med analytisk beståndsuppskattning 28%. Tillförlitligheten var högst i Västerhavet där andelen bestånd bedömda enligt MSY- konceptet är 38%, följt av Östersjön (25%), Bottenhavet (15%) och Bottenviken (11%). Andelen av de totala officiella svenska kommersiella landningarna av fisk och skaldjur som indikatorn omfattar ligger över 99 %.

I projektet tillämpades fördröjd sådd samt mekanisk ogräsbekämpning, i form av falska såbäddar före sådden samt blindharvning före uppkomst och selektiv ogräsharvning efter uppkomst av vårkornet. Bland de två vårkornsorterna som studeras anses Planet ha en relativt bra ogräskonkurrerande förmåga och Irina anses ha en något sämre ogräskonkurrerande förmåga. Parallellt med studierna av rad- och plantavståndens påverkan på fröogräsen, så utvärderades även hur dessa parametrar påverkade vårkornens bladyteindex (LAI), skördens storlek och kvalitet samt kväveeffektiviteten (nitrogen use efficiency = NUE). Skörden av vårkorn ökade generellt vid en jämnare rumslig fördelning av utsädet. Den ökade skörden uppnåddes vid ett tätare radavstånd på såmaskinen och en ökad planttäthet (ökat antal plantor per m²). Skörderesultaten för Irina och Planet tyder på att en jämnare rumslig fördelning av utsädet, över hela markytan, genom att så vårkorn på 6,25 cm med Väderstad Turf Rapid eller via ”3-radsbandsådd” med Väderstad 300 C, ger högre kornskörd jämfört med sådd på 25 cm. Skörden vid försöken utförda 2022 i ekologiskt vårkorn som såddes på 6,25 cm i jämförelse med 12,5 cm radavstånd, var 8-15 % större (0,5-1,0 ton/ha) för det tätare radavståndet, vid utsädesmängden 500 kärnor per m². Även vid utsädesmängden 300 kärnor per m², så var skörden något större, 2-7 % (0,1-0,4 ton/ha), för det tätare radavståndet. Detta resultat ansluter mycket väl till litteraturgenomgången, samt vår hypotes om att en jämnare rumslig fördelning av utsädet över markytan, genom ett tätare radavstånd och en något ökad utsädesmängd bör resultera i högre skörd. Skörden under 2023, med den mycket torra försommaren, resulterade precis som för 2022 i Irina, med ökad skörd vid ett tätare radavstånd och ökad utsädesmängd, på en ganska vatten-hållande jord (Campus Alnarp). Dock fick vi ett avvikande skörderesultat för Planet under 2023. Här var skörden opåverkad av radavstånden 6,25 och 12,5 cm. Skörden minskade vid en ökad utsädesmängd för de båda radavstånden, på en jord som hade sämre vattenhållande förmåga (Lönnstorp). Detta avvikande skörderesultat för Planet kan ha berott på den mycket torra försommaren 2023, då konkurrensen om tillgängligt vatten var större i de tätare bestånden, med högre utsädesmängder än 300 kärnor per m². Den mekaniska ogräsbekämpningen, med blindharvning före uppkomst och selektiv ogräsharvning efter uppkomst, resulterade i en lägre skörd jämfört med om den mekaniska ogräsbekämpningen inte utförts. Detta resultat betyder att plantbeståndets ogräskon-kurrerande förmåga var tillräcklig för att ge en hög skörd av vårkornet, och utan insats av någon ogräsbekämpning utöver två falska såbäddar före sådden och fördröjd sådd med 3-7 dagar. Skördesänkningen, efter den mekaniska ogräsbekämpningen, var lägre vid höga utsädesmängder jämfört med låga. Under 2023, då två extra försöksled med integrerad ogräskontroll genomfördes i vårkornet Planet, med finansiering från SLU Partnerskap Alnarp, så resulterade den kemiska ogräsbekämpningen i en sänkt skörd med ca 9 % och kombinationen av mekanisk och kemisk ogräsbekämpning sänkte skörden med ca 12 %, jämfört med leden där endast plantbeståndet konkurrerade mot fröogräsen. I studien av grödornas ogräsbekämpningseffekt så resulterade ett högre bladyteindex (LAI) hos grödan, genom högre utsädesmängd och bättre rumslig fördelning av utsädet, i en lägre marktäckningsgrad och lägre vikt hos ogräset. När ogräsbekämpningseffekten studerades i försöken under 2022 var den bättre vid 6,25 cm radavstånd jämfört med 12,5 cm radavstånd, vid utsädesmängder över ca 230 kärnor per m² för Planet och ca 300 kärnor per m² för Irina. Vid en mycket låg utsädesmängd, 200 kärnor per m², blev ogräseffekten bättre vid ett radavstånd på 12,5 cm jämfört med 6,25 cm. Vid en mer normal utsädesmängd, på 400 kärnor per m², så var ogräseffekten bättre vid 6,25 cm radavstånd jämfört med 12,5 cm. Vid bedömning av ogrässituationen i försöken har vi tillämpat en avläsningsmetodik där ogrässituationen avläses på markytan i direkt anslutning, och längs försöksparcellerna för att fastställa ogrästrycket på fältet (med eller utan falska såbäddar). Ogrästrycket på markytan mellan försöksrutorna med vårkornet Planet var högt. Ogräsvikten var ca 24 gånger högre (ca 330 g TS/m²) på markytan mellan försöksrutorna jämfört med endast grödans ogräskon-kurrens under 2022. Med denna avläsningsmetodik som är beskriven i Hansson & Ascard (2002) kan man på ett vetenskapligt sätt beskriva hur insatta bekämpningsåtgärder alternativt plantbeståndet hos grödan påverkar ogräset, jämfört med en kontroll. Utan denna metodik får man lätt en skenbar uppfattning om att ogrässituationen på fältet är mycket bra och utan några stora problem med fröogräs. Denna datainsamlingsmetodik är speciellt viktig att tillämpa i ogräsförsök med konkurrenskraftiga huvudgrödor som vårkorn. När vi bedömde proteinhalten i försöken 2022 visade det sig att en ökad skörd, som förväntat, resulterade i en lägre proteinhalt, både i Planet och i Irina. Odlingsåret 2023 med försommar-torka resulterade i ett avvikande resultat för Planet rörande proteinhalt odlad på en jord med en något sämre vattenhållande förmåga. Beroende på ogräsbekämpningsstrategi i Planet så gav en ökad skörd högre proteinhalt alternativt en oförändrad proteinhalt. I försöken var proteinhalten generellt hög under 2022 och 2023 (>12 %), med undantag för Planet under 2022 där proteinhalten var<12 %. I detta fall var skörden högre, ca 5,6 ton/ha i leden med mekanisk ogräsbekämpning (blindharvning och selektiv harvning) och ca 6 ton/ha i leden med enbart grödans och dess plantbestånds ogräskonkurrens. När vi bedömde kväveeffektiviteten (NUE) för vårkornsorterna Irina och Planet låg den generellt på samma nivå, när utsädesmängden ändras från låg till hög, 200 till 600 kärnor per m². Kväveeffektiviteten har dock en tendens till att vara högre vid tätare radavstånd. Tätare radavstånd möjliggör ett ökat plantavstånd i raden, när utsädesmängden är konstant. Det innebär att plantorna har lägre inbördes konkurrens om tillgängligt kväve. I försöken hade kväveeffektiviteten en tendens till att vara något högre när sådd utförs på 6,25 cm, jämfört med 12,5 cm radavstånd. Det vill säga kväveeffektiviteten verkar öka när plantavståndet i raden dubbleras, vid samma utsädesmängd. Vidare blev NUE betydligt lägre när radavståndet ökade från 12,5 cm till 25 cm, troligtvis beroende på en större planttäthet i raden, vid 25 cm, jämfört med 12,5 cm radavstånd.

Five-needle white pines (Family Pinaceae, Genus Pinus, Subgenus Strobus), and in particular whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis), limber pine (P. flexilis), and foxtail pine (P. balfouriana) are foundation species in upper subalpine and treeline forests of several National Park Service Pacific West Region parks, including Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks (SEKI) and Yosemite National Park (YOSE). The Sierra Nevada Network Inventory & Monitoring Program, in collaboration with the Klamath Network, Upper Columbia Basin Network, and Mojave Desert Network have implemented a joint long-term monitoring protocol to assess the current status and future trends in high elevation white pine communities. Key demographic parameters within white pine forest communities will be estimated by monitoring individual trees within permanent plots through time. This report documents the results of the 2022 field season, which was the ninth year of monitoring in SEKI and YOSE. The 2021 goal was to complete the first full measure of the third of three rotating panels (Panel 3) for each species-park population: YOSE-whitebark pine, SEKI-whitebark pine, and SEKI-foxtail pine. Each panel consists of 12 permanent 50 x 50 m (2,500 m2) plots that were randomly selected for each of the three populations. The full sampling array thus includes a total of 36 whitebark pine plots in YOSE, 36 whitebark pine plots in SEKI, and 36 foxtail pine plots in SEKI. Data from plot surveys will be used to characterize white pine forest community dynamics in SEKI and YOSE, including changes in tree species composition, forest structure, forest health, and demographics. Partial measures of Panel 3 were completed in 2017 (11 plots) in Yosemite whitebark pine, in 2017 (9 plots) in SEKI whitebark pine, and in 2014 (7 plots) and 2017-2018 (8, 1 plots) in foxtail pine. In 2022, the first full measure of all Panel 3 plots (and 2nd or 3rd remeasure of most plots) was successfully completed, and installation was completed on four of these plots in SEKI whitebark pine and two in foxtail pine. In total, the crew visited 36 sites during the 2022 field season, all from Panel 3. Within the 36 completed Panel 1 plots, a total of 6,398 trees were measured. Species composition, forest structure, and factors affecting tree health and reproduction including incidence and severity of white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola) infection, mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) infestation, dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium spp.) infection, canopy kill, and female cone production were recorded. During the 2022 field season crews continued to count the total number of mature cones per tree for whitebark and foxtail pine, use crown condition codes to assess crown health, and tag individual seedlings to be tracked through time. All three of these procedures started in 2017 and are to be evaluated by each of the three participating networks over several years, to determine whether they should become permanent changes to the monitoring protocol. In YOSE, all 12 Panel 3 whitebark pine plots were measured. A total of 2,720 trees were sampled, which included 977 live whitebark pine trees and 1,605 other live conifers. An additional 135 trees (including 26 whitebark) were recorded as dead. The average number of live whitebark pine trees per plot was 81 (SD = 94). White pine blister rust (WPBR) aecia were observed on five whitebark pine in one plot in YOSE in 2022, and no trees in any plot had inactive cankers showing three or more indicators of WPBR. WPBR had previously been documented in this plot, so the number of plots where rust has ever been observed in Yosemite remains unchanged at six. However, an infection documented in plot 42 in 2021 was not observed again when the plot was resampled in 2022, so it is possible this number should be five. Mountain pine beetle activity was observed on one live whitebark pine and three live and one dead lodgepole pine in YOSE in 2022. Despite documentation of many stands impacted by beetle attack in the field crew notes, the quantified rate of MPB attack was lower than in 2021. Twenty-one percent of live whitebark pine trees produced female cones. Cone-bearing trees averaged 7 (SD = 10) cones/tree. Whitebark pine seedling density averaged 80 (SD = 152) seedlings per hectare. The largest number of whitebark pine seedlings found in a plot was 51 and five of the twelve plots contained whitebark seedlings. All 12 Panel 3 SEKI whitebark pine plots were measured in 2022, and installation was completed on four of these, so this Panel is now fully installed. Within these plots, 2,179 live whitebark pine, 10 live foxtail pine, and 297 other live conifers were sampled (including 5 live western white pine). The average number of live whitebark pine trees per plot was 181 (SD = 125). Although the crew observed white pine blister rust in seven SEKI whitebark Panel 3 plots, no active cankers (aecia) were observed, and no trees displayed 3 of 5 indicators, so no infections were quantified. Mountain pine beetle activity was observed in 18 live and 23 dead whitebark pine and 1 live and one dead lodgepole pine within three plots in SEKI. Dwarf mistletoe was not encountered. Seven percent of live whitebark pine trees produced female cones. Cone-bearing trees averaged 3.7 (SD = 3.6) cones/tree. Whitebark seedling regeneration averaged 700 (SD = 752) seedlings per hectare. The largest number of whitebark seedlings found in a plot was 19, and two of the 12 plots did not contain any whitebark seedlings. In the foxtail pine Panel 3, all 12 plots were measured in 2022, and installation was completed on two of these, so installation of the panel is now complete. Within these plots we measured 309 live foxtail pine, 302 live whitebark pine, and 380 other live conifers, including four live western white pine. An additional 112 dead or recently dead trees and 22 unidentified snags were also measured, 19 of which were foxtail pine. The average number of foxtail pine trees per plot was 26 (SD = 26). No signs of blister rust infection or mistletoe were observed on foxtail pine. Mountain pine beetle activity was observed on one dead foxtail pine, one live whitebark pine, and seven live and one dead lodgepole pines within four plots. Sixty-two percent of the foxtail pine trees produced female cones. Cone-bearing trees averaged 33 (SD = 53) cones/tree. Seven foxtail pine seedlings were recorded within five plots, resulting in an estimated 72 (SD = 98) seedlings per hectare. Eight whitebark pine seedlings and three lodgepole pine seedlings were also found within three additional plots.

A total of 1662 violent incidents occurred in February 2023. The incidents are mostly triggered by politics, access to resources, and other socio-economic factors. More than 246 deaths and 1471 injuries have been recorded from these incidents. Around 3071 people have been arrested in February connected to violent incidents. Some 176 properties have been destroyed in the same time. The highest number of violent incidents have been recorded as clashes and attacks (426). Some 373 incidents of political violence were also recorded at the same time and 8 deaths were directly triggered by politics. Geographically, Dhaka (357) scores the highest number of violence followed by Chittagong (330), Rajshahi (235), and Khulna (235). The ruling Awami League held a peace rally in all unions across Bangladesh on 11 February 2023 to counter the march program of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The Awami Jubo League, the youth organization of the Awami League, also held rallies in all metropolitan areas and districts except in Dhaka on the same day. Thus, political incidents and violence was 19% more in February than previous. While some 56% of political conflict and violence contributed by Bangladesh Awami League & affiliates, 31% contributed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) & affiliates.
